Welcome to the Freak Epartments podcast. You ready for some RB funk? Solomon Prince? Let's go. And now, your host, the real Russell.

SPEAKER_11

Once again, to the Freak Eponymus podcast tonight. Thanks to you who are joining in for my tribute to the wonderful I can't believe I'm saying this. The late, great uh Angie Stone, who left us on Saturday, uh at the age of 63. Those of you who've been under a rock, Angie Stone uh passed away in a terrible car accident on Saturday. Uh her and her her group on the way back to Atlanta. Um, after her show in uh Alabama, I think the accident happened in Montgomery, Alabama. So tonight uh we are here to pay tribute and pay respect to Miss Angie. And I want to extend my condolences to uh Miss Angie's uh children, her family and her friends and and fans, as we all are. And so tonight we're just gonna vibe out, and what we're gonna do is uh we're gonna play some music, of course. I'm gonna play some video footage, I'm gonna share some messages from Angie herself. Those of you who don't know, uh she uh also had a podcast on YouTube and she uh she went live a lot on Instagram and other social media platforms. Uh but first things first, uh the children uh put out an announcement today and uh I would like to read that to you real quick. Um her children say today to everyone it is with heavy hearts that the children of R and B singer Angie Stone, along with her extended family, want to thank you all for your love, your well wishes, and condolences. Her daughter Diamond and her son Michael want to thank you for all uh for reading uh or reaching out to the family. Uh they ask that you respect their privacy as they grieve the loss of their mother. Angie is an example for black women and girls everywhere. She is a pioneer of rap music that began uh with the female rap uh trio sequence. Angie uh believed in giving back to um her fans and the community with her foundation, Angel Strike. Angie Stone was a proud, honorary member of the Zeta Phi Beta Thor. Uh services are being planned so that Angie's fans can honor her life, music, and legacy. Hopefully, you guys receive that today. Um so let's just talk about Angie's history real quick for those of you who are unfamiliar with the hits history of of Angie's Stone. Um this is what I what I found online today, Wikipedia, if you want to go check it out. There's so much more that I'm gonna read here. Um, but I I extracted the most important uh parts of her life that we can talk about tonight. Anyway, she was born Angela Laverne Brown, December 18th, 1961, and was an American singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. She rose to fame in the late 1970s as a member of the hip-hop trio, the sequence. In the early 1990s, she became a member of the RB trio Vertical Hole. Stone then signed with Arista Records to release her debut solo album, Black Diamond, uh in 1999, which received a gold certification by the Recording Industry Association of America, and spawned the single No More Rain in This Cloud, which we're all familiar with. After transitioning to J Records, she released her second album, uh Mahogany, Mahogany Soul, 2001, which spawned the hit single Wish I Didn't Miss You. Everybody knows that one. It was followed by Stone Love, 2004, and The Art of Love and War, 2007, her first number one album on the U.S. Billboard top RB hip-hop album albums chart. Uh Angie Stone ventured into acting in the 2000s, making her film debut in the 2002 comedy film Uh The Hot Chick. And her stage debut in 2003, in the role of Big Mama Morton in the Broadway musical Chicago. She then went on to appear in supporting roles in films and televisions uh series as well as several musical productions, including VH1's Celebrity Fit Club, I remember that. Uh and TV One's RB Divas in uh movies such as The Fighting Temptations 2003 with Beyonce, Pastor Brown, 2009, Schoolgirls, 2010. Uh Angie Stone was nominated for three Grammy Awards and won two Soul Train Lady of Soul Awards in 2021. She received the Soul Music Icon Award at the Black Music Honors in uh in 2024. She was featured vocalist uh on Damon Little's uh No Stressing, which peaked at number one on the Billboard Gospel airplay chart. As far as her early life, I don't know, those of you who have been following me on uh social media, I've been talking about the fact that she and I are from the same city. Uh she was born in Columbia, South Carolina, where I'm from, uh, where she began singing gospel music at the first Nazareth Baptist Church under the leadership of Reverend Blakely and Scott. Her father, a member of a local gospel quartet, uh, took Stone to see performances by gospel artists such as the Singing Angels and the Gospel Keynotes. So let's let's take it back to 1979 through 1985, uh, with her days with the sequence. Uh in the late 1970s, when Stone was 16, she formed a group, formed a rap uh trio group called the Sequence. And female hip-hop a female hip-hop act, also consisting of Cheryl the Pearl Cook and Gwendolyn Blond Blondie Chisholm. They were the second rap group signed to the Sugar Hill Records after auditioning for manager Sylvia Robinson backstage at a Sugar Hill game concert in South Carolina. If I'm not mistaken, that was at the Township Auditorium. Those of you are in Columbia or from Columbia, you know exactly where the Township Auditorium is. Lots of big names have come through there. The sequence uh scored a hit with their single Funk You Up, which reached number 15 on the US Top Black Black Singles chart. The trio enjoyed a series of rap hits as the first uh female rap group during the early years of hip-hop. Singles such as Monster Jam, featuring rapper Spoony G and Funky Sound Tear the Roof Off, kept the band touring. With Robinson uh acting as their mentor, the group faded into obscurity as hip-hop changed from its original party sound to a more gritty street art form, and the trio eventually disbanded in 1985. And soon after that, 1986 to 2005, Vertical Hole, Black Diamond and Career Breakthrough. Uh Angie Stone then worked with hip-hop and electrophunk music uh group Mantronics before b uh uh becoming the lead vocalist of uh the trio Vertical Hole, which released popular single Seems You're Much Too Busy, as well as two albums, Matter of Time, 1993, and Head First, 1995. In 1996, Stone teamed up with Jerry DeVoe, singer Lenny Kravis' cousin, and Charlie uh Mole to form the group Devo. Not not DeVo Demon, it's D-E-V-O-X. D Vox or DeVoe. They recorded one album, Devo, uh featuring uh Angie B. Stone, released in Japan by Toshiba E.M.I. Selected cuts were featured on Jerry DeVoe's front front-of-the-line video via the expansion records, which also included stone pen material. Signed to Jocelyn Cooper's Midnight Songs, Stone also shared songwriting credits on D'Angelo's first two studio albums, Brown Sugar 95 and Voodoo 2000. Voodoo 2000, as well as uh providing backing vocals, went on tour with him. Uh she also served as backing vocalist on Lenny Kravis' fifth studio album, 5 in 1998. So there's a little history on Miss Angie Stone. Sorry it was a little long-winded. I gotta get it all in tonight. Those who uh want to know a little history on Angie Stone, those of you who are fans but not true fans want some information on her. We uh we're gonna dig into it tonight. Um let's uh let's kick it off. Kick it off with some more music. That's why we're here for the most part, right? That's what she was known for. So let's uh let's vibe out. Let's vibe out to some Angie Stone. You're gonna recognize this one. This is a cover song.

SPEAKER_08

Thinking about the I've had so long when somebody peaks.

SPEAKER_11

SPEAKER_11

Hang out with me while I do this trivia.

unknown

Strangle by shoes, I think.

SPEAKER_11

Got the chance to s to see her when she stopped when she opened for Maxwell on his Now Tour 2001. Oh awesome. I never had the opportunity to see Angie Stone in concert. But being that she's from my city, I have run into her uh throughout town.

unknown

Holding that tea.

SPEAKER_11

We used to have this place here in Columbia down on the vista called Jillian's. Early 2000s. I wasted all my brother. She hung out there sometimes. Thanks for joining Michelle Green.

unknown

Nothing ever.

SPEAKER_11

Dash Hauser. Yeah, I didn't realize she uh she had done a cover of uh simply red's holding back the tears, or holding back the years. Till today. I was like, gotta play that one. She's killing it. So those of you who are joining, jump down in the chat. Say hello, let us know where you're tuning in from. You're welcome to share any Angie stories that you may have. I'm gonna open up the phone lines in a few. Those of you who want to call in and share any Angie Stone stories that you may have. Some of you guys have may have seen her in concert, some of you guys may have been friends with her or have met her at some point. She's killing it. I was originally Maxwell and Alicia Keyes. It was originally Maxwell and Alicia Keys. Max had to cancel because he lost his voice. When he came back, Alicia couldn't come because she had other engagements, so Angie stepped in instead. How cool is that! I've never seen Maxwell. But I have seen Alicia Keys a few times. Anyway, this is about Angie Stone. I never caught her in concert, but I did see her at the Richland County Library this past June when she and the ladies of the sequence shared their experiences in the business. Oh man, I wish I could have caught that. It's right here. Are you from Columbia, Michelle?

SPEAKER_02

Oh, awesome.

SPEAKER_11

Small world. Very small world. So I'm sure you know the history of Angie Stone. So you probably remember. Remember Jillians as well. I've seen Angie there a few times. I had no idea that was happening. If I would have known, I would have been I would have been there. Absolutely. I'm familiar with her cover of Holding Back. The song is at the beginning of the movie Love and Basketball. Oh, okay. Gotta go back and check that out. One of my favorite movies of all time. Omar Epson. I remember Jillians. I'm young enough to remember when Trump You Up came out. Killing this man, what a voice. Throwing some gospel on the end. She's huge into gospel. Yes. Incomparable, Miss Angie Stone. Yeah. I vaguely remember when Funk You Up came out. Because if I can remember correctly, that was probably 1980 or so. So I was uh gosh. I was probably like twelve years old at the time. I know that that was uh on the Sugar Hill. Sugar Hill label. I'm gonna play some of that later. Um see what can we do next. Angie. Um let's let's talk about this, and those of you guys who who follow me on social media, she you probably saw what I posted a couple days ago. Angie and I actually uh briefly discussed her coming on uh my podcast back in September. I reached out to her um and explained, you know, what I did, what the show was about, and the fact that I too was from Columbia. Um and she gracious graciously responded back very quickly. I got you. Text me at this number. And so I did. And for a while a little time went by, I didn't hear back, I didn't hear back, kept texting. Tried to call a couple times. And I know she's a busy person, she's a ages on. And then before you know it, she had started her own podcast. Got busy with that, then she went on tour, she was busy with that, and it never happened. But it touched me that she was graciously kind enough to respond back and agree to do it. We were never able because of schedule conflicts, we weren't able to work it out. Like the fact that she was cool with it. That's just the kind of person that I've come to know her as. I can't believe this whole time just discovered she sang the thing to the TV show with a girlfriend. So, yeah, you know what? I didn't realize that either. And I'm I'm hearing a song in my head right now, watching the show a million times. Never realize that was her. I guess I'm not a credit reader at the end of the show. Never realize that. Anyway. That's my story. That's my interest on the story. Let's play another video. Here we go. She's very well known for this song. She's well known for a lot of songs, but this one in particular stands out. So I thought I'd I'd play this one tonight for you.

unknown

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_03

Okay.

SPEAKER_10

She's not just a friend. I can take it on it.

SPEAKER_03

That's the audio problem over on the last podcast I did.

SPEAKER_10

What in the world is happening? It's a big butt. Don't you care at me? I know y'all know the spot. Yeah. I was right. Step up, uh, we and do it. What you bring back, man, I know that was good to me. It's time to stay up. Why you disappoint me, honey?

SPEAKER_02

On the county. Y'all roll with me. Yeah, you're in story.

SPEAKER_06

Y'all got it, right? I want y'all to freeze.

SPEAKER_03

SPEAKER_10

Two. One, two, three. Gotcha. One, two, three. One, two, three. One, two, three.

SPEAKER_11

Um, let me uh for those of you in the purple circle, I'm sure that most of you uh are aware that Angie Stone and Prince did a song together uh back in the early 2000s called uh You Make My Sunshine. Let's hear a little clip of that real quick just to get you uh re-familiar with it.

SPEAKER_10

Leave the devil alone. Make me run down. How to keep your pain from coming in real steady? I tell you what the eye, the people stand roll. Get your hands out of it. Your eyes are watching.

SPEAKER_11

Yes, sir. Remember that one? What's up, Rachel Armstrong Clinton? How are you tonight, dear? Thanks for joining in. As I pay my respects and honor the incomparable Miss Angie Stone. Uh we're just gonna vibe out a little bit more here. Let's jump to some music real quick. I'm gonna throw up the uh the call-in number for those of you guys who want to call in and share your Angie stories. Maybe you've met her, maybe you've been to a concert, you want to talk about your favorite Angie's Angie Stone uh album or song. That's perfectly fine. So let's do that as we vibe out with some more music about the great Angie Stone. Yes, ma'am. You are correct. How y'all feel? I did not think I was gonna be coming on this week doing a tribute show to another fallen musician.

SPEAKER_10

I'm nothing without you so soon. I'm everything with you.

SPEAKER_11

That's three in about a week.

SPEAKER_10

I want to dedicate the song to you. I generally do it for Marvin and for Curtis.

SPEAKER_06

But yes, please do go back and watch from the beginning. Of all the people that were patient. Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_11

And we've been nonstop, Angie Stone.

SPEAKER_10

Come on, girl.

SPEAKER_02

Let's go to church.

SPEAKER_10

With that roses such would astound you.

SPEAKER_11

Golden voice.

SPEAKER_10

But angels, man, angels are the makings.

SPEAKER_11

He's truly an angel now, right?

SPEAKER_10

It is true. The makings of you've been a miracle. All what you've done. Please stay right by my side to everyone over I don't would know I thought I told you so. Sell up and I should be so much.

SPEAKER_11

That's cool. I know she's got stories. Oh, killing it. Killing it, killing it, killing it. Anyway. All right, let's uh let's let's take it back. Uh earlier we were talking about how Angie got her start uh in the business. And we know that she uh started out in the late 1970s, early eighties with a group called the Sequence. So let's take a look at the history of how that all began real quick.

SPEAKER_10

I said Cher the Pearl, the one with the eye, she's guaranteed to hypnotize that Angie.

SPEAKER_11

Everybody remember the Sugar Hill label? Here's the story.

SPEAKER_00

The sequence were a trio of friends from Columbia, South Carolina, who were singers and cheerleaders. After hearing King Tim III by the Fat Back Band in 1979, they decided to add rapping to their repertoire. Cheryl the Pearl, Blondie, and Angie B called themselves a sequence because everything about them ran in a sequence. Angie was 5'2, Cheryl was 5'3, and Blondie was 5'4. And on October 20th, Blondie turned 20. On November 19th, Cheryl turned 19. And on December 18th, Angie turned 18. When the Sugar Hill gang came to Township Auditorium in Columbia, South Carolina to perform in October of 1979, the sequins were able to make their way backstage and audition for Sylvia Robinson, the founder and CEO of Sugar Hill Records. Sylvia was impressed and called the girls within a week to come to New Jersey and record. 1979's Funk You Up would simultaneously make them the first female rap group to make a record and the first rap group ever from the South to make a rap record. Angie B would marry her label mate, little Rodney C from the Funky Four Plus One, whose name was actually Rodney Stone. Angie Stone would become a powerful force in a new genre called Neo Soul, and the lead singer of a group called Vertical Hole. As a solo singer and writer, Andy Stone would take the world by storm.

SPEAKER_11

There you have it. Where she uh broke into the business at an early age before we knew Andy Stone. This is her most recent post on Instagram, which was made on February 17th. I just want to play that real quick. So you guys can get a feel of what she was doing over on social media. She had just started her her own podcast a few months ago, uh, the latter part of 2024. She was doing a lot of Instagram live stuff. Let's let's just take a look at what she was doing over there.

SPEAKER_06

And y'all, it's been a minute. How y'all doing? Come on in, come on in. Where's my music at? Oh my god. This is trying to get my music going. Ashton here, somebody take my um, yeah. Let me get right. I gotta always have that that vibe to just let us know everything is good. How y'all been?

SPEAKER_11

Slow down there.

SPEAKER_06

Hey, it's been so long since we chopped it up, but I wanted to get on here for a few minutes just to bring y'all up to speed of what's going on. Actually getting ready to go and do CIAA. The game. I'll be there. Oh, and by the way, my team won. Philly won. Yeah, yeah, yeah. So I didn't get to see anything about it because I didn't want to ruffle no feathers up in here. You know what I'm saying? But anyway, I am so excited for Philly. They did an amazing, an amazing, an amazing job. Um, so I'm excited, but I'm officially a fan now. Also, I'm going to be at the CIAA performing. You don't want to miss it. I'm also bringing product with me. Hot top and coffee. Bam. I'm bringing this with me so you can buy your own when you get there. Hopefully, we'll have a table set up. I'm going to be in Alabama.

SPEAKER_11

So I'm taking it.

SPEAKER_06

I'll have product there as well. I'm super excited. We're booking. A lot of stuff is going on that I don't want to just let out the bag just yet. But you can see that a lot going on my face. There's a lot of things going on as far as film, television, tours, uh, artists, songwriting. There's a lot of projects. I've just all of myself.

SPEAKER_11

Now I realize why she didn't have time to come on the show, but agree. And for all the people she's gonna be able to do it. She's just being a nice person.

SPEAKER_06

The craziest thing. That she was. I I had to address this.

SPEAKER_11

But I understand.

SPEAKER_04

Do I have enough people in the room yet? Yeah, so Miss New Outlook says she will be there too, Sora.

SPEAKER_06

Listen, Sora, I got a surprise for my Soros. So listen, I want all my Sora's later five day to come home. Incorporated. I want y'all to know I'm coming with my stuff assistant. So we got to represent, be in the house, okay? Now, I just have to address this because someone texted my phone the other day and said, let me find out if Andy Stone had an affair with a secret affair with Maurice White. Yo, where'd he get this stuff from? OMG.

SPEAKER_11

Maurice White?

SPEAKER_06

I mean, Maurice White for real, y'all. Earth winning fight.

SPEAKER_11

Maurice White.

SPEAKER_06

I just have to show my nigga writers right now.

SPEAKER_11

Oh wow. She was hilarious. Wow, yeah, that was her last Instagram post on uh what did I say? February 17th. Yeah, February 17th. Of course she got busy with the tours. And uh I'm gonna show some footage from uh Friday night show. This past Friday, she performed in Alabama. And uh real quick. And I do have some footage of that. Here we go.

SPEAKER_03

Unbelievable. It's that Friday.

SPEAKER_11

My hands around the fact that just a few hours later we lost her. But you know what? God needed her more. Obviously. Alright, y'all. Let's let's get back to the music. Again, I'm gonna throw up the uh call-in number as we move on. Numbers 803-400-8812 if you have any Angie stories. Uh favorite Angie, Angie songs. Have you met Angie? Have you seen her in concert? Let's talk about it. Let's go.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, we're gonna take it back to the new CD. Is that okay with you? That's too well for me.

SPEAKER_11

On the Neo Soul sound just because along with all of the other Neo Soul artists that were hot during the nineties, early two thousands. Amen also reminds me of the Leah from the four of the ninety-four night.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Real huge in the Neo soul genre. He really brought back captured the soul, the silky, smooth soulness of the seventies and eighties.

SPEAKER_11

Nothing but echo issues throughout with the videos. Hopefully I'm good to go tonight. Alright. Um, I'm gonna throw up a video. Um a message that uh Angie Stone shared with the public through her social media. It's a it's not a great story, but it's a story that needed to be told by her. It's about uh not getting her royalties from uh Universal. And um I think she just recently found that out. And she's just sharing a message with us, a message that we can all learn from. And this was what uh Prince was speaking on all those years about uh his association with uh Warner Brothers. Here we go.

SPEAKER_06

After 40 something years independence, I'm like, well, why? Um where are my royalties going because I'm not getting this? Come to the day at after 40 something years independence, I'm like, well, why? Um where are my royalties going because I'm not getting this? Come to find out, Universal Music has been receiving all my royalties, all my mechanicals. They've taken pretty much everything. They've stolen, I won't say stolen, but they have taken all the monies that were due to me, they have basically absorbed in that company. And even though there's several class action lawsuits, people that were working on my behalf never even registered the songs, all the songs that I've done. I'm only coming to find out they were not properly registered by the companies that I signed over to. People that were supposed to do their due diligence. So I'm truly a walking testimony that God has carried me all this time. Because if you only knew how much money they have taken from me, how much they have stolen from me, money that I'm supposed to be, I should have been able to retire 20 years ago with the money I've made, supposedly. But there are key people have to give up my coins. And so what I'm doing now is whatever is necessary to make sure they pay me for the legacy of my life for my children and my grandchildren. They're gonna have to give me my money. I mean, when you sit back and think Blue on Mars, Dr. Dre, when you think about all these people that have sample music, if they're filthy rich on it, what's our problem? Or my problem.

SPEAKER_11

Exactly. Well said, Miss Angie. And um, I don't know what the outcome was of this, but I hope that uh she came out on top and that her children have access to all of the funds that are due to them, especially at this point after her passing. So I hope that uh that all uh that whole situation, that royalty situation was resolved and that her family is going to get what they deserve that belong to her rightfully. She she put in the work. I think anybody that puts in the work needs to be paid in full even if it's royalties, residual checks, whatever. You did the work, you get the money, that's how it should work. Anyway, moving right along. Some more music, keep the vibe going. More smoothness and the incomparable is Angie's stone.

SPEAKER_10

I've been going through things, never heard of breaking back, give a face with all hands and on me with it. But I lose my mind with my friends and my family.

SPEAKER_11

That's smooth and and funky at the same time.

SPEAKER_10

Every day, every day, every day, baby.

SPEAKER_02

Funk and neo soul. Tell me what soul aren't being wrapped up in the work. That's who she was.

unknown

I didn't think I couldn't make it over.

SPEAKER_10

Back in the day, I wasn't good enough, but I went to think the win over. Took advantage of my pin to hold it. I wanted to be a dungeon every day. Every house on me and every minute.

SPEAKER_11

No, let me minimize myself. It's all about energy tonight.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, it's game up every day, every day, every day, baby. Now that I got a baby. You're giving me the sweet.

unknown

SPEAKER_11
