What's up, everybody, and welcome back once again to the Freakopotamus podcast on this Hump Day Wednesday. How's everybody doing today? Hopefully everybody is in a in a very purple mood. As we all know, in the purple family, uh celebration is starting this week. Uh actually starts tomorrow, uh June 5th through the 8th. And I'm sure many of you guys are already up there partaking in some of the pre-celebration celebration events that are happening right now. Um I know there's one going on tonight. Several going on tonight before the actual celebration uh starts on tomorrow. Um and that's what this show is all about. Um hopefully I've got several correspondents that will join in with us tonight and give us a feedback, give us a report on what's happening uh live in Minneapolis in real time as we're doing this. I know I've got um several people that are attending multiple events pre-celebration. Uh let's talk about this one right here that's happening. Let's see if I can pull it up for you real quick. Right there, that's going on. Uh let's see, one second. Technical difficulties. The joys of going live with no net, right? Let's let's back out real quick here. Alright, and let's throw this up on the screen real quick so you can see. That's happening tonight. It's happening in about 30 minutes from now uh in Minneapolis. And it's uh it's it's put on by the Purple Genealogy. And it's an event called the Gold Experience, special appearance from Mr. Martin Kimber. Those of you who don't know Martin, follow him on his social media. He's an extraordinary uh vocalist. He he does a lot of Prince tunes and some other tunes by other artists as well. Incredible voice. So if you don't know Martin, get to know Martin. He's on uh most of the social media platforms. So he'll be there tonight performing at this purple genealogy event. And uh and also someone by the name of Minneapolis uh Mateo. Is that how you say it? Anyway, that's supposed to be happening. Uh let me see if I can uh read you the details. Actually, it's supposed to start at 7 30 Minneapolis time. Let me see if I can pull up more information on that real quick. Yeah, it's uh course June 4th, 2020 Women's Club of Minneapolis. Uh that's 410 Oak Grove Street, Minneapolis, uh 7:30 p.m. till midnight. Uh if you haven't gotten your tickets, you want to get your tickets last minute, the event bright is selling them for$61 plus tax and fees. Uh tickets at the door will be$80. So if you wanna you're in Minneapolis and you wanna check that out, you've got about 20 minutes to get there. So that's happening in uh we've got uh Tanya D. Harris reporting live from there tonight. So you should be on Shirley and we've got multiple other correspondents that will chime in tonight and let us know what's happening there in Minneapolis pre-celebration. Um before we get to that, a little out of breath, y'all. Forgive me. Um let's let's talk about this guy. Those of you in the purple circle are aware by now that we've lost our purple brother, um, Mr. Pepe Willie, passed away a few days ago. Minneapolis pioneer, who uh is responsible for uh producing Prince for the first time when Prince was a teenager and responsible for the 94 East Project. Those of you who are unfamiliar with Pepe Willie, uh let's put up a little bio about Pepe here, real quick. Pepe Willie was a musician and founder of Pepe Music Incorporated, recognized by many as the godfather of the Minneapolis Sound. Pepe was the first person to ever take Prince into a professional recording studio, and Pepe's own band, 94 East, was an integral player on the local music scene of the mid-1970s. So rest in peace, Mr. Pepe Willie. Um condolences go out to his family and friends, everybody who knew and loved them. Pepe Willie, uh, best known for 94 East, and also best known for uh writing the song Do Yourself a Favor. Uh, those of you who are not familiar with Do Yourself a Favor. Uh let's play a little clip from that real quick. Let's see if I can find it for you. This is actually Prince's version.

A lot of you guys have posted pictures of you with Pepe at uh multiple multiple events that it's that's happening over the past few years. I know he was at supposedly at celebration last year, and he uh showed up for the um dedication of of Andre Simone's mother at that event that he put on in Minneapolis last year. Love by all, great personality, great stories. Original uh pioneer of the Minneapolis Sound, the godfather of the Minneapolis Sound. Alright. On to some more happier news. Uh let's talk about everything that's going on this celebration this year, which kicks off tomorrow. Uh of course everybody knows we got the the big concert. It's happening at uh Paisley Park tomorrow 7 p.m. Is that tomorrow? No, I'm sorry, that's not tomorrow. That's June 6th. I'm way ahead of myself. Yeah, June 6th, which is Friday. My bad. June 6th, big concert featuring Morris Day and the Time, Jesse Johnson, the original family members, artists by the name of Jada Nicole, Johnny Venus, all these shows happening June 6th, Friday, 7 p.m. Paisley Park soundstage. So hopefully you guys that are going uh will have a blast. I know you will. I mean, what an incredible bill. I wish I could be there this year, but uh, you know, I haven't gotten to a celebration yet. I've gotten to Paisley Park, I've gotten to Minneapolis, but I haven't done a celebration yet, and I'm so anxious to get there, and I'm marking it on my calendar for next year because next year will be the 10th anniversary of Princess Passing, and I know something special is gonna happen, so I'm putting it on my calendar to be there. But anyway, this is incredible, man. I wish I could be there to see the original family members, which includes Paul Peterson, St. Paul, Jelly Bean Johnson, Eric Leeds, Susanna Melbourne, and Jerome Penn. Now, I was curious when I first found out that the family was gonna perform and Morris Dane is gonna perform, whether or not uh Jerome Benton was gonna play dual roles. Like we all know that he was a part of the original time uh as a percussionist and and mirror holder. But based off of the interview that he gave with Funkatopia, I don't think that's gonna happen. But you never know. You never know. Jesse Johnson, one of the best in in the game to ever do it, one of the best guitarists that I know. Rock Island's own. Uh these other artists that I've never heard of, Jaden Nicole, Johnny Venus, um I'm anxious to see what they're like, and I'm sure people will report back and talk about the entire night. So hats off to you guys are going, man. I'm jealous. I'm jealous. Anyway, that's happening on Friday, June 6th. Uh we got the block party on June 7th from 5 p.m. until 1 a.m. And that's happening at the new Prince mural that they just uh resurrected. Uh was it what last year or the year before? Was it the year before, like two years? I wish I could have gone. It's gonna be epic. Yes, it's definitely gonna be epic. Definitely. I mean, this is one of the best build shows I think they put on in years.

I don't think there's gonna be any parking on site available at all. So you might want to consider uh Uber or Lyft anyway. And I expect it to be greater than hopefully next year we won't get uh purple rain to death but I'm glad to see that the estate kind of changed the direction of that this year and kind of incorporated the the anniversary of uh around the world in the day anniversary of around the world in the day incorporated that brought back the original family members it's also the 40th anniversary of the family album one of my favorite uh prince protest albums every Danielle are you going to this event tonight the purple genealogy event oh this jam of the year tour takes me back to ninety seven many memories from that tour I think that particular tour I saw about five or six maybe seven different jam of the year shows throughout the country could you play that thing Mike Scott could you play that thing getting fucked at night but can you play that thing thanks everybody for joining tonight I appreciate you chiming in jumping down in the comments in the chat as we kick off celebration 2025 with some pre-celebration events and correspondence from Minneapolis as it's happening in real time we've had quite a bit of fun checking out tonight's event and we will continue to do so as as we as we keep it going. Purple love you all gonna what you're gonna turn it out you talking to me say what turn my piano up come on baby this is my first Prince concert again in the year of nineteen I'm gonna be showing my age by telling you my first Prince concert was the nineteen ninety nine tour. I was two I was fourteen But I tell you, ever since our brother's passing, concerts will never be the same again, man. There was nothing like a Prince concert coming to your city. The excitement and enthusiasm and purple anticipation building up to that day. Tickets would go on sale. And up to that moment when the actual concert was happening, you just couldn't wait to be there. Nothing like a Prince concert. I'll never forget it for the rest of my life, man. I mean, we've got concerts today. But nothing comparable to a Prince concert. And I think the most I've ever paid to go see Prince is probably around a hundred bucks. And at that time, I thought that was expensive, but you got your money's worth. And then some. Today, Beyonce concerts, Taylor Swift concerts, five hundred thousand, two thousand bucks. That's crazy. Way, way, way overpriced. Who are we for mediocre music?

Wash on the soap and brush the go to. You draw a lovely couple skin gets pale. Then I got the file for my fingernails.

I totally agree with that. We need to be moving away from the whole purple rain thing, I think. I see they tried to incorporate the ladder and some of the other images from the Around the World Day album. Okay, we're purple ranning you to death, but we're gonna throw in the fact that it's the 40th anniversary of Around the World Day. I'm not anti-purple rain. I just think that they're purple random us to death. They're overdoing it on the purple rain stuff. Our brother is much more than that. I think that might be why a lot of people are not going to celebration this year. That and the fact that the prices are still crazy.

Now for those of you who don't know, uh on the nineteen ninety-nine tour, uh the time was the backup band. Backup band for Vanity Six. They were behind the curtains providing the music. With Dan. It would be nice to see maybe a since it's the 40th anniversary of the family's album, and maybe a deluxe family album. Maybe print's own vocals on some of those tracks. Maybe it being the 40th anniversary of Around the World in a Day, maybe we get a deluxe Around the World in a Day. Not every day we get to hear unreleased stuff. I may play one or two more.
