What's up, everybody, and welcome back once again to the Freak Eponymus Podcast, the show where we bring you the voices that shape the sound of yesterday and also the voices that shape the sound of tomorrow. I am your host, the real Russell. How's everybody doing today? On this big hump day. No, today's not Wednesday. Today is Friday Junior. This Thursday, Friday Eve. How's everybody doing today? Got got behind a little bit. Been under the weather again. Relapsed. Nasty allergies. Cold symptoms. Coughing. Chest congestion. You name it. Been struggling with that for a couple of weeks, but I think I'm on the back end and uh on my way to a full recovery here, thank God. But yep, we are back. And tonight, got a lot to talk about tonight. A lot going on in the purple world. As you know, we are embarking on uh April 21st, which is next Tuesday. This coming up Tuesday, which marks the 10th anniversary of Princess Transition. A lot going on in Minneapolis, not a lot going on across the country. As you're aware, lots of events that we can be excited about. I mean, now it's the time for a celebration. Um, I think the mourning process is pretty much over for the majority of us. Some of us are still in mourning, but it's been a decade, believe it or not, since our brother Prince has transitioned on. And I will be here this coming up, Tuesday, April 21st at 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, as I do a celebration of the 10th anniversary of his passing. Uh, it's going to be a live call-in show. And hopefully, some special guests will stop by as well to speak to us. You guys want to call in and uh share your Prince stories, uh, your favorite Prince moments, uh, where you were on that dreadful day. As I did last year, most of you guys called in and talked about where you were and showed your appreciation for the greatest entertainer who ever walked the earth. And I am going to open the phone lines up again so you guys can once again call in and share all of your stories, all of your memories, anything you want to talk about. It's probably related on that night. So that is this coming up this coming up Tuesday, uh, 8 p.m. Eastern Standard. Uh, let's see. Let's talk about some of the events that are happening at the end of this week, tomorrow, and of course next week as well, as we celebrate that 10-year anniversary. So, first of all, let's let's not get to that quite yet. Let's talk about the announcement that came from the estate, Paisley Park, a few days ago. As we all know, celebrations coming up uh in June. June 3rd through the 7th, Minneapolis. Uh, a lot of you guys uh have your your tickets to the event, the VIP tickets, the $1,400 VIP tickets and the general admission $900 tickets. Some of you were fortunate enough to get the Early Bird Special. Um, I was not. I don't even have the standard admission, but I still do plan to be in Minneapolis, and I recommend to everyone to be in Minneapolis if you're not even going to any of the events to be there. Make your presence known, be amongst the purple family. And also the estate is going to announce on April 22nd they're going to start selling single single-day event tickets as well. So I'm anxious to see what those prices will look like and what we're going to get. How they're splitting this event up and who's performing which day, who's not. But anyway, this is the lineup that they sent out a few days ago. Not bad. Pretty good lineup. Really impressed with it. Um basically, what we're going to get is we're going to get members of the NPG and the revolution uniting for the very first time. That should be interesting. Uh, we're going to have Shaka Khan. Shaka Khan will be performing this year. She's uh she's been to celebration before. I think the last time she was there, she didn't do any singing. She was um speaking, more or less. Uh we're gonna have Moore's Day. Don't know if that means Moore's Day and the time, or just Moore's Day. What would be cool to see uh is Morris do some of his solo stuff that we haven't heard him do live before, like uh Love is a Game, you know, Man's Pride, all of that stuff that he did solo wise, that would be cool to see. Not sure how they're gonna set that up. But of course, if it's gonna be Morris Day in the time, it's gonna be sad because Jelly Bean is no longer with us, and we won't see Mr. Jelly Bean there today. I mean, today. Ready already, see? In June. But anyway, uh's Day, and we're gonna have Miguel on the lineup. Didn't see that one coming. Big Miguel fan. Miguel himself is a huge prince fan. You see a lot of that in uh a lot of the music that he releases. You see the influence there. We got Mr. Tevin Campbell be in the house. We all know Tevin. Can we talk? Round and round. Uh we got Balau. Very gifted artist in his own right, very unique, very original. Been around for a minute. Didn't see that one coming, but I'm glad that the um the estate decided to step out of the purple circle and grab some of these people that um we weren't expecting. Um we're gonna have Cat Graham as well. Sounds of Blackness. I think Sounds of Blackness have been there before, and uh much, much more. Also, special guest, Mr. Bootsy Collins. Why me up, baby? Bootsy Collins will be there. Uh Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis will be in the house. As you know, those guys are doing a stint out in Las Vegas right now, uh playing all of their hits. And so, yeah, Jimmy Jam, Terry Lewis will be there, and much, much more. Uh tickets on sale now. No longer at the early bird price, back up to the uh the original price of VIP. 1,400 big ones, and general admission for 900 big ones. I know it's a high price point, high price point for for me as well, so that's why I recommend at least being in Minneapolis to be amongst the Purple Family to attend some of these uh non-celebration events that are going on around town. Speaking of which, um, of course, we all know there's gonna be the huge block party that's happening downtown Minneapolis at the mural. And I'm gonna read the flyer that was put out uh today. Uh Paisley Park in the city of Minneapolis, Prince Celebration Block Party, and Prince Sing Along. That's happening. Joining together in Minneapolis with love for one another, Saturday, June 6th, uh at the Prince Mural. That's gonna be 101 North 9th Street, Minneapolis. Uh let's celebrate Prince together. Block party 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sing along is at 4.30 to looks like 6 p.m. For more information, you can visit paisleypark.com. So that's that's one of the events that you can attend outside of the main celebration at Paisley. Um there's gonna be a ton of other events going on around Minneapolis, concerts here and there. Hopefully, First Avenue will be doing something. Uh vendors, uh you name it. Lots of fun to be had by all. Hey, hey, Miss Tanya. Welcome in. Thanks for stopping by. Glad you can make it. Everybody knows Tanya D. Harris, big promoter of the Purple Family. She's been on the show several times as a co-host and a guest. Welcome. Thanks for all you do. Those guys don't know who Tanya D. Harris is, make sure you hit her up on all of your socials because she is there promoting, talking about all things purple.
SPEAKER_04Very respected, very loved in the purple community. Yes, ma'am.
SPEAKER_03Um, what else do we want to talk about? Um, brother Ermail, brother man, what's up? Good to see you, brother. Thanks for stopping by. Yes, sir. Ermil. Also huge in the purple community. Great voice. You guys want to follow Ermil? He's on all your socials uh singing, telling print stories, uh taking little tours around Minneapolis to show us. Appreciate you, brother. Um speaking of the celebration, you know, there was um a sweepstakes going on. I think today was the last day, and they made the announcement. I got excited today. I was uh driving, and I shouldn't have been looking at my phone, but my my email was open, and this came through. And uh all I all I all I saw in the email was uh Minneapolis Airport. I'm like, oh my god, I've won tickets, and they're gonna send me a link to uh to uh get my plan tickets. But no, it was just saying that the deadline is is over and the the entry had uh sweepstakes entries have closed. Uh so be on the lookout for the uh the winner announcement. I was so excited for no damn reason, but you know, I thought it was pretty funny. Yes, sir. Appreciate you too, brother. Uh let's see, what else can we talk about? A lot of stuff happening. Uh tomorrow there's a symposium that's happening in New York City. And this is being put on by um the one and only D'Angela Duff. You guys may know D'Angela from uh what did What Did Prince Do This Week over on YouTube. She does a podcast uh every weekend alongside uh Mr. Michael Dean. And uh I'm gonna read her her posting on Instagram today. She's talking about the symposium. Anyway, uh if you're not following her already, go ahead and uh follow her. She is polished solid over on Instagram, and she says, commemoration uh of 10 years since Princess Passing and 40 years since Prince's Parade and Under the Cherry Moon, his visionary 1986 album and film. This event is free and open to the public. Register and learn more at IWonderYou.polisolid.com. Uh extra bonus, Prince Syllabus Director uh Zahir Ali will be presenting as part of uh 2 30 p.m. round table with other folks. Um these are their social names. Um and then at 4 30 as part of a panel where he will present uh Africa Divided, Prince uh and the Racial Mountain. Is that right? Racial Mountain? Okay. Anyway, that's happening and how it's gonna be split up uh tomorrow, April 17th, uh will be an online virtual virtual symposium, roundtables and talks on Zoom events. And then April 18th through the 19th will be an in-person symposium. Uh, and this is gonna be held at 370 J Street, Brooklyn, New York. New York over there. Anyway, that's that.
SPEAKER_04Um, also let's talk about this event. This is the Under the Cherry Moon, 40th anniversary film screening.
SPEAKER_03And this is being hosted by the one and only Mr. Jerome Benton, moderated by uh Mr. Dr. Funkenberry. Glad to see uh Funkenberry's out there doing his thing. I know he's been battling some health issues, but he is uh he's still out there doing his thing, man. So make sure you guys uh hit up Jerome Benton on his socials to find out more information. I think that's actually happening in uh Los Angeles, if I'm not not mistaken. Anyway, here's a little write-up on that. Uh Friday, April 17th, Los Angeles. Yeah, Los Angeles. 40th anniversary screening of Princess Under the Jerry Moon, hosted by Jerome Benton, moderated by Dr. Funkenberry. Uh so yep, check that out if you're in the area. Also, I told you we had lots of purple news to talk about tonight. You probably heard about a lot of this stuff in other places. I know Funkatopia gave a lot of information on what's happening, what's coming up. Very, very cool show that um Mr. Christopher did uh a couple nights ago. Talked about the um the last Prince Prince concert that was held in Atlanta uh ten years ago to the day uh of uh was it two days ago was the tenth anniversary of that last concert, and he actually attended both shows that night and uh told his story from start to finish, and it was just fantastic to my understanding. I'm still kicking myself because I had the opportunity to go to that last concert, and I debated and I debated and I debated, and I said, you know what? Atlanta's not that far. It's probably about four hours from where I live. I'm just gonna wait till it comes closer, maybe Charlotte. Charlotte's only like an hour. It's gotta come to Charlotte. If it's if it's gonna be in Atlanta, he's gotta come to Charlotte. I know he's just gonna tour the country doing this piano and microphone thing, and I'll just wait it out. Oh, little did I know that I should have gone, man. I'm still kicking myself to this day. Because none of us knew that it was gonna be the last.
SPEAKER_04And if I could go back and do it all over again, I would have been there, man. Anyway, uh let's throw this up.
SPEAKER_03Let's see. Here we go. Let's talk about this real quick. Tavis Smiley. Prince didn't trust a lot of people, but he definitely trusted Tavis Smiley. Um most of you have probably seen Prince on Tavis's show a couple times. I think he did his show a couple times. Um but anyway, if you get a chance, you're gonna have to you're gonna have to download the uh KBLE, KBLA 1580 app to catch this. It's gonna be three hours of Prince in his own words on Tuesday, April 21st, which is this coming up Tuesday, and that's gonna start at 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. Pacific Standard Time. So make sure you check that out. And like I said, I will be here this coming up Tuesday, April 21st, uh 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, doing my celebration of the 10th anniversary of Prince's passing as well. So make sure you guys hang out. I mentioned earlier it's gonna be a live call-in show. And I want you guys to hang out. You know, we're gonna we're gonna not be sad. We're gonna we're gonna celebrate. I'm gonna let you guys call in, talk about Prince, tell your Prince stories, your Prince experiences. A lot of you have been to a lot of concerts, uh after shows, after parties. You want to talk about where you were on that dreadful day. Any memories you have, anything you want to share. The phone lines will be open on Tuesday. Um, Stephanie Mills is here. What's up, Stephanie? Hey Russell and Tanya. Getting ready for the symposium tomorrow and this weekend. So happy it will be live streamed. My preference. Yeah, I'm gonna have to check that out as well. I know they're doing the live stream tomorrow, and they're doing the in-person on uh Saturday and Sunday.
SPEAKER_04So looking forward to that.
SPEAKER_03Um, I think we've covered just about everything uh that's happening in Minneapolis over the next day or two. Um and next week, not not only Minneapolis, but Los Angeles, New York City, and we got uh things happening in Minneapolis on Tuesday to celebrate Prince's uh transition date for ten years. One whole decade, can you believe it?
SPEAKER_04Incredible, man. Anyway, what was I gonna say? There's something that I that I wanted to talk about as well. I can't remember what it was.
SPEAKER_03But anyway, what I want to do tonight is this just hang out and have a little fun. Haven't played music in a while, haven't done any um a cappellas or stemmed out anything and done any instrumentals. So what I want to do tonight is uh play a couple songs stemmed out. I want to play automatic because there's a lot of uh things going on in that song that we don't get to hear vocally because of the music. So what I wanted to do was drop the music out and take a listen to Prince Vocally in that song, but there's a lot of spoken uh parts in that song that I couldn't pick up on when I was younger, but now that we have the technology to send this stuff out, you can drop all of the music out and um actually hear uh what's being said or what's being sung. So I wanted to do that tonight, if you don't mind. Should be fun.
SPEAKER_04Um real quick for you guys.
SPEAKER_03Alright, let's kick it off with uh let's see. Let's do let's don't do automatic first. I also want to do lady cab driver. A lot going on in that one. So I'm just gonna jam out here real quick. You guys can jam out with me if you want. But uh let's go. Let's let's get into it.
SPEAKER_04There we go. This is the instrumental of uh Lady Cab driver.
SPEAKER_03So make sure it's coming through. That you never paid attention to before. Pardon me for talking to the music. Someone on my YouTube let me have it for talking through the music. They're like, you were so rude. How can you talk through a print song? But you all know I do a lot of music commentary as the music's playing. So my apologies if uh you think it's rude to me. Welcome back. I know you're still out there. Tell him my age.
SPEAKER_02Funky to the end, yeah.
SPEAKER_12Tax thing, fact saying.
SPEAKER_04Anyway. All right, let's let's do some uh let's drop let's drop some music out and do some vocals. This is the vocals. Um stand out Sorry about the dead area.
SPEAKER_03Of course, there are not any vocals in the beginning of the song, so we may have to speed it up some vocal.
SPEAKER_04Very cool.
SPEAKER_12Can you take it over that? Don't know where I'm going 'cause I don't know nothing. Switch over and guess let's travel Lady Don't ask questions Promise to my last Trouble with a blowin' I'm growing com Get me out of here I'm gonna talk Lady Trap Java Bowen of Fest Layla trouble with a bow and huh with a tongue of the fucking letters Lila I'm so lonely No let's not be tomorrow as a lesson but the earnings we call Travit burger travel travel screen out of me Take me to your mansion I was over and less confusion in my head to support the jobs blowin' home and that down on the fucking ass attention to the harmonies in that song. Can you take me for the job is a blow in the dog and notice the dog barking?
SPEAKER_07This is political money at all. This is one that wasn't born like my brother had been all. This is the politicians who are born believing more. This is what discrimination That's cool, that's all that's gone.
SPEAKER_08This is full of this is for the women. This one's for the wind without sex. This is for the wind and the glows, no matter how fast it slows. Not knowing where I'm going. Galaxy's better.
SPEAKER_02The layers of vocals.
SPEAKER_04We've all heard this song a million times, but the little nuances we really get to focus on without the music and the drums. The big instrumental band comes in.
SPEAKER_03Anyway, while we are waiting for more vocals to drop in, um anything you guys want to talk about? Drop down in the comments. Things happening in the background there. So who is going to pay the price point this year and go to celebration? I haven't heard from a lot of folks on whether or not they are going. I've seen a few comments out there on socials about people saying that they are going. And you've got a lot of people that are saying, uh-uh. I would have to uh get on the pole or start an OnlyFans to uh to afford to be able to go. But I've made that joke in the past about getting on the pole getting on the pole to be able to afford it. But uh yeah, you don't want to see that, so that's not happening. A lot of little nuances going on in the background there. Never paid attention to before, because you can hear it. But thankfully, um today's technology allows us to to hear things that we've never heard before. So as I'm doing this to these two songs, makes me want to stem more stuff to discover things that I haven't heard in the song. Anyway, hope you enjoyed that. And we're gonna move right along to uh to automatic. I think what I did to automatic was uh basically I didn't stem out just the instrumental. Um I think I went with just the the vocals the isolated vocals because there's a lot going on in automatic that I've always wanted to hear and I couldn't because of the music.
SPEAKER_04So let's just let's dig into that one real quick Automatic, isolated vocals, here we go. Let's pause real quick. Uh Stephanie's got a question.
SPEAKER_03Russell, what's your opinion on the lineup at Celebration? Yeah, I um spoke on that earlier uh as I went over the lineup. I'm impressed with the lineup. I mean, we um we haven't had a lineup like that in quite a few years. Uh some of them are repeats. I know Shaka's been there. Uh Sounds of Blackness have been there. Um, but I was happy to see that they reached outside of the Purple Circle, like I said, and grabbed um Balau. And um also grabbed um Miguel. That should be interesting. I know Miguel's a big uh Prince fan, and you can hear a lot of influence, Prince influence in his music. So I think that would be a good fit. Um Morris Day. Don't know whether it's just gonna be Morris Day doing solo stuff or Morris Day with the time. Either one is perfectly fine. What I've always wanted to see though, it's always been my uh one of my dream lineups, is for the original members of the time to uh to reunite at one of the celebrations. Of course, Jilly Bean can't be there, but um, you know, prior to his passing, I always wanted to see that happening. But um, you know, only time will tell. I mean, if they do decide to do it, he will be the only missing one. Uh Jesse's been there doing his solo stuff. Um I would um has Sheila E been there? I don't think Sheila E's actually performed at a celebration. I could be wrong about that. I mean, there's been quite a few of them now. Um I would like to see some people that we haven't seen there. Uh maybe Taja Seville. Um maybe Apollonia 6. Uh don't know if they could pull off a performance. I mean, they probably could. Still are pretty decent. They're they're holding up well for their age. I don't know if uh Apollonia would participate in that because of her little uh turmoil that she had with the estate. Um let's see. What's brother man talking about? Let's see. I love uh that Prince would mirror songs he produced for others, Lady Cat Driver and Get It Up. Uh share similar mel melodies. Yeah, you're absolutely right, they do, brother. Anyway, let's let's continue on with the uh isolated vocals for automatic.
SPEAKER_12You ask me if I love you.
SPEAKER_04Here we go.
SPEAKER_12It's automatic time leave me, I die. It's automatic too. You ask me to forgive you. We know I'm just mad. Stop the music, baby. You know you're a wanna do. Hey I think you're mad tell me what to do. And I'm so in love with you. You ask me in fucking shoot. So money. Because automatic too. I'm never leaving what to do. Stop the music, baby. No, I'm an automatic fool. Any chip magic.
SPEAKER_03Harmonies.
SPEAKER_12Just tell me what to do. And tell me to magic. Oh, so loud you.
SPEAKER_04Oh, Prince.
SPEAKER_12I'll rub it back forever. Somebody. Somebody too. Oh my god. Somebody. Yes, I'm winning.
SPEAKER_01Someone loves you.
SPEAKER_12Auty on magic. And you tea a magic. Tell me what to do, boo-boo. A you tea a magic? So loop.
SPEAKER_09Man is how much to join. Spoken part. Maybe you have the always be a version for man. You dream. With our lips with our souls. Stop lips. Why is it that I think we do so good?
SPEAKER_03I'm doing this because it's panic from left to right in my ear.
SPEAKER_09Can you hear me? If you have any mercy, don't torture me.
SPEAKER_10I'm automatic. The best you'll ever find. No one else could understand you. They say nothing's perfect, but they don't know you.
SPEAKER_01I'm a dick to your pain.
SPEAKER_12Prepare for take off.
SPEAKER_03I feel like I'm doing a one of those reaction videos. Basically, I am.
SPEAKER_05Not with your words, but with your soul. With whom I'm never bored. Talk to me some more. I can hear you. I'm going to have to torture you now.
SPEAKER_04This is crazy. I love it.
SPEAKER_03Okay, let's drop some crying parts right here. Nobody was doing that in nineteen eighty-two. No RB artists, no other pop artists, any other kind of artists. They weren't dropping little tidbits of this kind of stuff in their music. Sorry.
SPEAKER_04Allergies taken anyway.
SPEAKER_03Anyway, you kind of get why I wanted to do this tonight. Little bass part. You got a little guitar part in there. Anyway, as I was saying, now you see why I kind of wanted to do this tonight. Just to kind of dig in and let you guys hear some of the stuff that you normally wouldn't be able to hear with the music there. And freaking credible. So anyway, as I was saying, as I'm doing these two songs, it really makes me want to dig into more songs and uh stem out more songs to see what we've been missing or that we weren't able to hear. Uh because of the music and things like that. And you know, once you drop the vocals out of a lot of songs, you get to hear a lot of the uh the musical instrumentation that we never paid attention to in the past. So anyway, there you have it. Stemmed out those two songs for you tonight. Thanks to everyone who was able to join in tonight and participate and uh just have some fun with you tonight. I know it was very impromptu. I usually announce shows days in advance, and I kinda made that announcement this morning that I was gonna do something tonight. Allergies are starting to kick in uh nighttime has fallen. So I think I'm gonna wrap it up here and uh grab some meds and uh call it the night. But anyway, um I hope to see you back here on Tuesday. Uh this coming up Tuesday, 8 p.m. Eastern Standard Time, as I do my celebration of Prince's uh uh transition uh 10 years ago next Tuesday. And uh you guys can call in tell your print stories. I know, Brother Man or Mel, you've got some stories you might want to share. I've seen them on social media, but uh hear them verbally on the show would be amazing. And um I know you got some stuff to talk about, brother. And anybody else who wants to call in, share your print stories. Press concerts that you've been to, um after shows, after parties, where you were on the day that we passed. Things like that. Um your greatest memories of the uh the greatest entertainer who ever walked this earth. So anyway, uh make sure you guys uh who are not following me over on all my socials, do so. Uh particularly uh YouTube. Go go over and uh subscribe to me there. Hit the bell for future notifications for whenever I drop a new episode, you will certainly be notified. And also, I'm over on TikTok, uh, Instagram, uh, Twitch. I got two Facebook groups. Uh did I cover it all? Yeah, covered it all. All under the handle Freak Eponymus Podcast. And as I always say, everybody, live, love, and dream. And I will see you guys on Tuesday. Remember, Tuesday, 8 p.m. Eastern Standard as we celebrate. All right, y'all. Thanks for joining.
SPEAKER_04I'll see you guys on Tuesday. Beat y'all, I'm gonna do it.
