SPEAKER_02

Welcome to the Freak Apotamus Podcast. You ready for some RB funk? Soul and Prince? Let's go. Now, your host, the real Russell.

SPEAKER_10

Anyway, welcome to the Freakopotamus Podcast. Welcome back. We are the show where we bring you the voices that shape the sound of yesterday and also the voices that shape the sound of tomorrow. I am your host, the real Russell. Sorry, uh, about the technical difficulties starting off. Anyway, you get the gist. Uh we are back on this special 421-2026. Everybody in the Purple Circle knows what today is. Today is a special day. We're not gonna make it a Saturday. We're gonna make it a celebration day. Uh this marks the 10-year passing of our brother Prince's transition ten years ago as of today. And tonight we're gonna vibe out. I'm gonna open up the phone lines. Um, I'm gonna allow you guys to call in, tell your Prince stories, uh, share your Prince experiences. If you want to talk about where you were on that dreadful day ten years ago, that's fine too. Whatever you want to do. Um so that's what we're gonna do tonight. We're gonna play some music, we're gonna play some video, and we're just gonna relax, and we're gonna make this a celebration and uh not a mourning or sad event. We're just gonna keep it chill, and we're just gonna have some fun with it. And uh lots going on around the country, Minneapolis on today. Um I know they're doing uh candlelight visual out at Paisley Park at some point tonight, um, if they haven't done it already. Uh I think they've been kind of doing some things all day long and they're gonna continue to do things throughout the night as well. Um, those of you who are in Minneapolis who are partaking, I would love to hear your feedback on what exactly is going on, what what events you went to, what what transpired today on this special day. I know that uh yesterday we had uh this event uh over at the Dakota in Minneapolis. It was a show put on by uh the Revelation Michael Bland and the band. Um that took place last night, and special guest Liv Warfield showed up, turned it out over at the Dakota. So hopefully you guys in uh Minneapolis had a chance to go check that out. Um let's see what else happened. Let me throw this uh graphic back up here real quick. Anyway, uh yesterday, those of you in Minneapolis, uh, did anybody get a chance to go over to Paisley Park? I know Londell McMillan was there, and he was gonna answer questions um from the public as far as what's going on with the estate, what what we can expect. I know that I had um one person that I follow over on the on TikTok. Uh she lives in Minneapolis and she was gonna go check it out. And a lot of people were asking her in the comments um to ask about the release of um piano on a microphone, video, audio. And her reply was basically it's coming. Now I don't know what that means, I don't know if that was an answer that was given by Londell, but those were her words. So hopefully she will follow up in the next day or so to let us know exactly what that meant. Um I would love to hear feedback from folks that went to Paisley yesterday around three o'clock to to hear what Londell had to say. So those of you who are joining tonight who were able to attend that that um impromptu event, I would love to hear from you. Uh let's see what else. What's going on? Did anybody get a chance to listen to Tavis Smiley's special today? Yeah. I know he was supposed to do a three-hour special uh on his uh show today. If you downloaded the app, I forgot the name of the app. Let me look real quick. Anyway, you may be able to go back and listen. I tried to listen today, but I didn't see the three-hour special with Prince. He did have Maite on his show. I did listen to that. That was really interesting. Uh let's see, it's the um KBLA app talk 1580. If you download that app and you should be able to pull up Tavis Smiley's show. He talked to Maite today. Uh it wasn't yesterday. Actually, he talked to Maite yesterday. He was supposed to do the uh three-hour Prince event today. And apparently he was gonna dig in his vaults, and I don't know if he's gonna play um verbiage from the times that Prince was actually on his show or whether he had something in the vault that we haven't heard before. But basically it was supposed to be three hours of Prince in his own words. So um I'm gonna go back and see if I can pull that up. Thanks, guys, for those of you who are joining in tonight. Um, what else is happening? Uh I know that at 12 midnight tonight, they are supposed to have another candlelight visual down at the Riley Creek Bridge, aka the Graffiti Bridge. I know that um Brother Christopher from Funkatovia is supposed to be down at Riley Creek Bridge tonight, 12 midnight, doing the candlelight visual. And I'm sure he's in Minneapolis doing tons of other things. I um I asked him if he would um be kind enough to take some time out and stop by and and say hello to the people, but I don't think he received my message. He's probably that busy. So we shall see, but we may actually have some special guests dropping by tonight. Um I reached out to a couple of folks to see if they would be interested in joining, so we shall see. I'm not gonna mention any names, but we may have some special guests stop by tonight to say hello and what's up. Um, let's see. Before we go any further, did anybody get a chance to check this out? It's a new song that the uh the estate put out yesterday called With This Tear Slow Jam by your boy Prince. Uh this song was actually recorded in 1991. Uh it was later given to Celine Dion for one of her albums. I checked it out yesterday. Really nice, smooth, mellowed out song. If you're into Prince Slow Jams, this one is for you. Um as I said, it was recorded in 1991 and they released the Prince's version on yesterday. Uh what else do we have going on? Uh we got the Love for One Another event taking place tonight. Uh headed up by Maite Garcia. Uh Shelby's gonna be there performing along with the Minneapolis All-Star Funk Band featuring St. Paul. And I've got some free event footage right here to share with you. And this is actually uh St. Paul talking about it, and also he's talking about the 10th anniversary of Prince's passing and the time that he spent with Prince. Here we go. Let's check out Mr. St.

SPEAKER_00

Paul. Prince hired me to replace Jimmy Jam in Morse. St. Paul Peterson here. Prince hired me to replace Jimmy Jam in Morse Day in the Time back in 1983. Today marks the 10-year anniversary of his passing, and I'm here in Hollywood, and uh we're gonna be playing a millennial concert and a fundraiser for Live for Love, Slam Slam benefits today with the Minneapolis Funk All Circle Special Guests. Where were you when you found out Prince? I was running a music college in Minneapolis, and uh I was about to teach a class, and a friend that came up to me and said, We gotta check out the news and saw what happened and obviously was devastated and confused and started to call my tastely park friends, and uh we planned a gathering, just getting together to commiserate, I guess, is what we did. And uh I'll never forget it. Uh what a crushing blow. You know, even though I was with him for only a short period of time in my life, uh, he had an incredible impact on me. And uh, you know, we miss him, and we're gonna honor him today. Rest in peace.

SPEAKER_10

Anyway, yeah, that's Mr. St. Paul talking about his time with Prince and um uh let me make myself a little bit larger. Here we go. Anyway, um let me make a correction real quick. Earlier, I say this is for the love for one another charity I'm putting on that event tonight. It's actually Live for Love. My bad. I got too confused. I always get the too confused for some reason. But anyway, uh that was St. Paul. Um, and I want to throw up a free event clip from uh Shelby J. You'll recognize some more people in the video. Let's check that out.

unknown

Uh oh.

SPEAKER_04

I love you.

unknown

I gotta go.

SPEAKER_10

All right, that was Miss Shelby J, Maite Garcia, and the Minneapolis funk all-stars doing their thing tonight out in Hollywood for the Live for Love uh charity event. Which is still going strong. This is this is a charity that uh Maite and Prince uh started back in the uh mid to late 90s, and it's still going strong. Love for one another, exactly. Thanks guys for joining tonight. We're just vibing out on this special 421-2026 10th anniversary of our brother Prince's uh transition, home going. That's what I like to call it. We're not gonna uh we're not gonna be sad tonight, we're gonna celebrate, we're gonna try to keep it as upbeat as possible. And let's see, I think I've covered pretty much all of the purple news for today. If anybody has anything else uh that they know of that is going on in Minneapolis, throughout the country, throughout the world, please jump down in the comments and let us know I might have missed something. Um I touched on some of the events that were happening yesterday as well as today. Um he ascended to the next level. Exactly right. Exactly right. As we all will one day. Um, let's see. As I mentioned earlier, we may have some special guests stopping in. Um hopefully um that will happen. I know that um a lot of the other uh purple podcasts, uh Prince related podcasts, they're probably doing lives uh as well tonight, along with myself. So um we sorry about that. We shall see. We're just gonna play it by ear tonight. Um let's just kick it off with some music. Um, as I mentioned, it's gonna be a call-in show tonight. So, those of you who are joining who want to call in and share your Prince story, share your Prince experiences, talk about any concerts or after shows that you might have gone to over the years. If you want to talk about where you were on that dreadful day, that is also fine. But I'm just gonna kick it off with some music, and the phone lines are open, and let's throw that number up there for you real quick. And that will be right there at the bottom. And if you can't see it, if it's too small, there it is again. It's 803-400-8812. Those guys who want to call in, perfectly fine. We're gonna kick it out with some music and just vibe out. This is a deep cut unreleased track called Dream. If anybody has a second to just let me know if the audio and the music is coming through, that would be wonderful because sometimes going into these live streams without a net, just blinded, you don't know what's happening on any other side. I didn't do any test before the show. I don't know what's happening on your side. Audio is good, thank you so much. I'm trying to to to figure out what the name is there. Is that um let me get a closer look? Is that Tle? Tle 1999 on the YouTube side. Tlee will or tly. It's kinda hard to pronounce a T and an L together. Tlee. Tle T close. Family, I call I'll call you that. How about that? Purple family.

SPEAKER_09

Will. Alright.

unknown

Gotcha.

SPEAKER_06

The past is slow.

SPEAKER_10

Has anybody heard this track dream before? Very smooth. I don't know why I started out uh with a slow song tonight, but uh it's all prints, it's all good.

SPEAKER_03

Try to keep it upbeating.

SPEAKER_10

The floor is yours as we vibe out and celebrate. Thank you, Miss Julie. Nice and smooth. Nice and breezy. Let's see if we got anybody hanging out in the green room. As I mentioned. Nice way to ease in into the purple groove. People groove, purple groove. We may have some special guests stopping by tonight. I don't see anybody hanging out in the green room quite yet. We shall see what happens. I know everybody has a busy schedule today, especially people up in Minneapolis.

SPEAKER_09

I don't see anything else in my notes.

SPEAKER_10

So that's coming up soon, so be sure to hang out for that. Maybe you've seen some already, maybe you haven't. I've got it to share to make this show a little different, a little more special tonight. Do you, Miss Julie says, do you like the new song that came out? Uh Tears. Yeah, I just talked about that earlier. Um, this song right there. That one is called Um With These Tears. Yeah, they released that yesterday. I like it. It's nice and smooth, just like the one we just heard. Um, the history behind it, it was recorded in 1991. 1991, we all know that during that time, that era, uh, we had the Diamonds and Frows album. And that song was later uh given to Celine Dion for one of her songs. But yesterday they released Prince's version. It's very, very nice, very smooth. Um I'm so glad that Prince was able to mature as a person, his music reflects his evolution. Absolutely. If you look back at a lot of his earlier stuff, it's totally different than his later stuff. Like as uh the years went by, he evolved and matured, and so did his music. And so we got to see him grow as a person and mature as well as his music. As a person and artist, he don't get stuck. His evolution is really amazing. Yeah. I mean, if you look back at his body of work, his history of music, um, his style, it was constantly evolving into something different. I just had a conversation with a guy today, and he's not really a print scholar, he knows uh some of the mainstream stuff that most people know, like purple rain and things like that. And he didn't realize there was a musicology album. And so he went back and listened to the musicology album, and he was like, This is nothing like purple rain. I was like, None of the albums are alike, each album was different. Um, I hear somebody down in the green room. Let's see who it is. Oh my gosh, everybody, welcome to the stage. Miss Tanya D. Harris.

SPEAKER_07

Hello, everybody.

SPEAKER_10

What's up? Welcome.

SPEAKER_08

Thank you. I've made it back in time.

SPEAKER_10

Awesome, awesome. Thanks for stopping in to say hello to the purple people.

SPEAKER_08

Hello, purple people.

SPEAKER_10

All right, yeah, we're just hanging out here. Earlier, I went over some purple news and things that are going on across the country in Minneapolis and uh playing some music and playing some videos and just having a good time trying to make this a celebration and and not anything sad.

SPEAKER_08

Right, I hear you. Like yesterday I was kind of like sad because it's like uh looking at everybody's pictures and the stories and everything, but then today I was like, you know, I'm gonna just play this music and dance. I went and get my got my hair done and uh was just trying to have a you know good day.

SPEAKER_10

Right, right. Yeah, gosh, it's been forever since you've been on here.

SPEAKER_08

I know, just been busy working and traveling.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I've been watching you fly all the all over the world and uh I'm jealous. I want to be like you when I grow up.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, you know, Delta's hiring.

SPEAKER_10

Delta's hiring. Okay, yeah. I can I can beat the gas out of seats, no problem.

SPEAKER_08

Right. I know today I I gotta get my bike out the um little uh off the balcony because the gas is it's 4.99 here. Oh wow, it's a hot it's hot.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, it's about that, yeah, it's about four here on the east coast. Yeah, I'm at crazy.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. So how's everybody doing?

SPEAKER_10

Everybody seems to be doing good. I've got um quite a few people that are joining in tonight, and I see a lot of people down in the chat um saying different things. I'm gonna have to scroll back and catch some of the stuff that I missed, but um yeah, we've just been hanging out. Um, I'm hoping that um some more guests will stop by as well. I reached out to some folks, but you know, yeah, um, most of the folks that I talked to also have podcasts, so they're probably going live tonight as well.

SPEAKER_08

Right, exactly. And then most of the um, you know, the people that played with Prince, um, they have shows tonight, and they had shows last night. So are they are they doing other stuff like overseas? Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I totally forgot that um Shelby was taking part of the live for Live for Love charity event tonight.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly, yeah. And that's uh uh Shelby, Maite, um St. Paul and the funk all stars.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I showed a clip, a pre-event clip from those guys earlier, and they were having a good time warming up.

SPEAKER_08

Yes, yes, yeah, yeah, that's yeah.

SPEAKER_10

I reached out to her earlier not knowing that she was gonna be busy, but she did tell me at one point she was definitely gonna come on the show.

SPEAKER_08

So okay, cool, cool, great as soon as she becomes unbusy. Yeah, yeah. Summertime they get a little bit more busier, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

She's always busy, which is a good thing. She's still working and still out there doing it, man.

SPEAKER_08

And exactly, yeah. And I talked to Cassand Cassandra, and I was like, When you know, um, you want to come on like podcasts and just talk about what you're doing, especially because she's gonna be at Paisley Park. And she was like, Yeah, I'm gonna, I'm gonna do that. I just my studio's not ready. I think she's I guess fixing everything in a studio at her.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, I would love to have her on, man. She's a very nice person, very talented person. Yeah, much, she's been around for a while, and most people don't even know her body, but yeah, she's done a lot.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

As well as play with Prince, but yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Um let what's what else is going on? Um, I know Shelby has shows that are coming up um in May, but this is like overseas. She has a show in Copenhagen at um the Epicurus, which is like a night, it's like um, it's like I guess a nightclub with you have like a bar and then and uh the bar and the stage is downstairs, and then upstairs is the restaurant. So she's gonna be there for pretty much the whole month of May. And then um in June, is it June? No, no, no, July, July 2nd, around like 4th of July weekend, she's gonna be with Candy and Amsterdam. Uh-huh. Yeah, so they're gonna be doing that, and then Maite is doing something for Live for Love for the kids around Memorial Day weekend, and then I think it's the 29th, May 29th, and then she's also doing like a dance class where you know the fans come and you can dance with Maite, and that's in May.

SPEAKER_10

Awesome. Didn't you get a chance to dance with Maite as well?

SPEAKER_08

Yes, I did. I love dancing with Maite.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Uh-huh. So um I'm trying to think. Oh, yeah, and then you of course in June is um uh celebration.

SPEAKER_03

Right.

SPEAKER_08

Uh-huh. So you have a lot of people going to that, and then MPG. Ooh, but they're not MPG anymore. What is it? Um the sound. Wait, the sound of Minneapolis. All stars. I gotta look at it again.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, lots of legalities going on.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, it's yeah, it's um they're gonna be in Minneapolis at like a I think it's an outdoor concert, it's free. Um, that's June 20th.

SPEAKER_10

Wow.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Wow, it's a it's it's amazing all this name change stuff is still going on 10 years later, you know?

SPEAKER_08

But I I still really don't understand that one because I see that there's other people out there doing prince music. Like um, I forget the bands, but you see them on social media. They have a band and they're out there singing prince um music and they're imitating Prince, and nothing is happening. Right. I did I don't get it. I don't get it.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, there are a lot of uh tribute bands out there using prince-related words for their you know, names for their band, like purple rain, where they're spelling rain a different way, right? And other things, you know. Okay, but they're getting away with it, you know. Yeah, yeah. Right now they are anyway. Who knows what's happening?

SPEAKER_08

That's true right now. I I guess because NPG was actually NPG with Prince, so like you said, there's no there's no letter change or whatever. Okay, I get okay, I get that.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, yeah, let's take a read some of the comments that are coming in. I'm I'm backing up a little bit here. Julie Brendan, I don't know if you know Julie Brendan, probably do. Hey, uh I I think that I think at the moment he became comfortable with being himself and not having to answer to anyone, that's the era I love, especially the song Breakdown and the section as of when she comes. Yes, yes, yes. I like that. Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

I love that song. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, we were talking earlier about his evolution and the way he matured throughout the years as well as his music.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

If you listen to a lot of his earlier stuff, it's totally different than you know, his his latter stuff.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly, exactly. Yeah. It's like he just got even more better and better.

SPEAKER_10

Better, better.

SPEAKER_08

Yes.

SPEAKER_10

Michelle Brown. Michelle Brown, thanks for joining, Michelle. Don't think I've spoken to you tonight, but uh says she was on her way to work and was crying when she got there. I assume this is on this day 10 years ago when that happened.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, that yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, we all have stories.

SPEAKER_08

Yes, it's yeah, it's kind of like you know, when those big tragic things happen, like I know where I was for 9-11. You know what I mean? Because I was with the airline. I knew I knew where I was with Prince, and I was just so glad I had just completed like all my trips, and I had flew in on the 20th back home. So I was like on my days off, and then the 21st, he passed. I was like, I was just glad I was home because if I was in the air, I'd have been a mess. I'd have probably been like, I gotta call out. I gotta call out.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, exactly. Right. Yeah, I was actually at work that day. I was on my lunch break taking a jog, and uh my phone started blowing up, and people were calling me, like, are you okay? Are you okay? Because they knew they knew how big of a fan I was. So it was like family. I'm just checking on you, make sure you're okay. I'm like, what are you talking about? So they were telling me what was going on, and um I was in disbelief like everybody else until I um I turned to TMZ. That's where I first saw the news.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, yeah, yeah. Like when same thing, people were calling me because they know we were we're big Prince fans and like, are you okay?

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Um, but I kept like, you know, in CNN and all the news, they weren't really saying it was prints yet. So I was like, oh, it's just somebody that works there, something happened, and you know, because it's Paisley Park, they're making it like this big thing, but it's you know, it's just a worker or something happened. Yeah, when it actually said it, I was like, oh my goodness, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I was thinking a worker or a staff member or something like that before I actually saw it on TMZ, and I was like, that's impossible. He was a health nut. How could that be so? Exactly. If it happened, then what exactly happened? Because he was definitely a health freak, right? Not freak, health nut, and uh he uh so active, he was doing piano in a microphone and riding his bicycle around Paced Devices, like there's no way, right? Yeah, yeah, so full of life.

SPEAKER_08

I know, just so sad, so sad, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, let's see. We've got um T Will again. Yes, we are blessed to be aware enough to be going along for the ride. I'm so glad I had ears to hear uh his genius, exactly. Good comments, man. Um T Will says, Welcome, welcome to Tanya. Hi for those of you who don't know who Tanya D. Harris is, just follow her on social media. You shall see. She's a big promoter of anything purple.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, big promoter, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

She's helped me a lot, she's promoted my stuff a lot and everybody else's stuff as well. Really grateful. Yeah, Julie Brandon and Susanna. Uh Will. I'm just going through. Elise Feriello. I can never pronounce that name correctly.

SPEAKER_08

I know when I met her, I was like, oh goodness, I don't know how to say that name. So I was just like, hey, we're just having fun here.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Yeah, apparently um she's there with the with the uh Live for Love event tonight. Yes, play some B size. Play some B size. Yeah, you know what? I gotta be careful, even if they're B size, if they were released B size, I gotta be careful that I don't get slapped by the YouTube cops. Because if I play something that's been officially released, then I might get dinged for it, and this video may never be aired. You know, I gotta be careful. So I what I try to do is play unreleased stuff or live versions of stuff or like really short clips, but I gotta be really careful about copyright. Exactly. Yeah, they will shut you down. They will, they will shut me down. Um, I've seen some people get shut down.

SPEAKER_08

Yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Let's see. Is this Riri2768 from YouTube? She says, Yeah, I'm going to the Purple Rain show tonight. Not sure how they are able to do it. Yeah, I was talking earlier about the tribute band. And they go by the name Purple Rain, but rain is spelled R-E-I-G-N instead of R-A-I-N. Right. And they've been doing that for years. I saw them quite a few times. I know they had a residency out in uh Las Vegas at um I want to say it was Planet Hollywood? I think it was Planet Hollywood, yeah. Michelle Douglas.

SPEAKER_09

Hey Michelle.

SPEAKER_03

Hey girl.

SPEAKER_10

Welcome, Michelle. Thanks for joining in tonight. Appreciate you.

SPEAKER_08

Michelle, are you going to celebration?

SPEAKER_10

If I had to guess, I would say yes. She is definitely a huge part of the Purple family, and she partakes in a lot of the events. I've been watching. Planet Hollywood. Yeah, Planet. Yeah, they're still a Planet Hollywood. Wow, they've been there for years because I saw them. I saw Purple Rain of Planet Planet Hollywood, like God. I want to say 10 years ago or more. Yeah. When Prince was alive, they were doing a show.

SPEAKER_06

Wow, okay.

SPEAKER_10

David Letterman show. Um I saw him at Harris Cherokee Casino once. I've seen them quite a few times. They're really good.

SPEAKER_08

And that's an and that their whole show is Prince Song. So I was like, well, how are they doing it?

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Yeah, they have like a Prince impersonator and the whole band thing, like the revolution. And then they also have a band that impersonates Morris Day in the Time. Oh, we lost time here for a second.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_10

Are you back?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. I don't see you. Can you see me or hear me?

SPEAKER_10

I can hear you, but I can't see you. I've got like a black black screen for you.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I have a black screen for you too.

SPEAKER_10

Really?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Maybe try going out and coming back in and see if that helps.

SPEAKER_08

Okay. Okay. Alright, I'll do that. Okay, bye.

SPEAKER_10

Okay. Anyway, the one and only Tanya D. Harris. She should be back in just a second. Yeah. As I was explaining, that tribute band does Prince. They also do Morris Day in the Time, and they also do uh Vanity Six, um aka Apollonia Six as well. Anyway, I'm not gonna play any music right now. Wait for uh Tanya to come back and see if we can uh pick up where we left off. And I think she is back. She's back audio kind of choppy. Can you hear me?

SPEAKER_08

Yes, chop choppy, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Okay.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_08

But I can hear you.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Yeah, I was just talking about uh the tribute band, uh Purple Rain. They all they do Prince and then do Morris Day in the Time, and they also have a group that does Vanity Six as well.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. So the triple threat. We'll see what happened if they get shut down or not.

SPEAKER_09

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

All right. Anyone else hanging out in the green memory? Double check and make sure. So, yep. Anything else going on with you, Purple Wise?

SPEAKER_08

Um uh let's see. I'm gonna, well, for celebration, I'm not going for the whole celebration. I'm just gonna wait till I think it comes out tomorrow, the individual concerts. I'm just probably doing a concert or two, something like that. Yeah, it's pricey. It's pricey.

SPEAKER_10

It is pricey, and I'm still on the fence. I don't think I'm gonna do the actual celebration events um at Paisley. I think I'm gonna be in Minneapolis as I tell everybody else to do. Be in Minneapolis and just be there amongst the people, you know.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. That's what I always do.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, do all of the other events like the block party.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

And yeah, all of the shows that are going on across town.

SPEAKER_08

Right, exactly. That's what I'm gonna do. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Hopefully, uh hopefully uh First Avenue would do something.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, because I didn't see that they were doing something, unless the concerts well, usually the concerts are at Paisley Park. Or at first I mean last year they were at first. Well the the last time I went, it was at some of the concerts were at First Avenue, some at Paisley. It just depends, I guess. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

And they have a few things going on at places like um like Dakota and Bunkers and some of those places.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I really want to see bunkers. I've never been to Bunkers. I got it. Okay, we gotta go.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I was when I was in Minneapolis, I I was trying to cram everything into just a few days, and I never made it to Bunkers or the Dakota or any of those places.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, yeah. I the Dakota I've been to for Shelby. I like it because you can get you can eat, you know, have your little dinner and watch the show.

SPEAKER_10

Right.

SPEAKER_08

So it's nice, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, so that's my plan just to be there, man, amongst the the purple people. And you know, you can actually have conversations about Prince without anybody thinking you're weird.

SPEAKER_08

Right, right. Exactly, exactly.

SPEAKER_10

You know, because your average person, you can't have a meaningful Prince conversation with them.

SPEAKER_08

Right. They're like, okay, all right, let's talk about a caller here, let's see. Okay.

SPEAKER_10

Uh let me see if I can get you on. One second. Um can you can you hear, Tanya? Can you hear the voice coming through?

SPEAKER_08

No, I can't.

SPEAKER_10

Say hello. What about now, Tanya?

SPEAKER_08

I can't hear it. I can't hear anything.

SPEAKER_10

I knew I was gonna have to get the technical difficulties.

SPEAKER_08

I got the my mic is on. I'm just checking all the bottoms.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, I think Yeah, I can hear you. I'm just dealing with some technic technical difficulties right now, but uh don't don't go.

SPEAKER_09

Don't go.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, what did I do? Um okay, let me get out of here. I hit something. Uh oh. Hello.

SPEAKER_09

Are you gone again?

SPEAKER_08

Um, I'm trying to get oh, I don't know what I hit.

SPEAKER_10

All right, go ahead, call her.

SPEAKER_07

I just want to call you. I just wanted to call you for the birthday memory, right? Like all of the family is going on today.

SPEAKER_10

All right, I'm I'm doing this the old school way. I've got I have to do this before because I've had technical technical difficulties in the past, but I've got the actual phone up to the microphone, so hopefully everybody can hear.

SPEAKER_07

Okay, no problem.

SPEAKER_10

Anyway, can I get your name again? Where are you calling from?

SPEAKER_07

Yes, this is Angie, and I'm calling from Illinois.

SPEAKER_10

Well, thanks for calling, Angie. Uh anything you want to share with us tonight?

SPEAKER_07

Um yes, I was just calling in as I was saying uh saying how to tiny as well. Uh mentioned we had hung out last year at the gold party. Um so that was a great time. And looking forward to the celebration this year, and I agree it's a bit pricey uh this year, um, but still want to be in the purple mecca.

SPEAKER_10

Absolutely. Was that the event that the purple genealogy put on last year, Minneapolis?

SPEAKER_07

Yeah, yeah, yeah. That was nice.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, yeah. Tanya was my uh correspondent last year, and she took some video footage of me live as it was happening. That was awesome last year.

SPEAKER_07

I remember that. I remember that. Uh Tanya and I so you did that and dancing uh with several people uh there. I mean it was a great yeah.

SPEAKER_10

I was wondering if they were gonna do that again this year because it was really nice.

SPEAKER_07

I believe last year was the final one. I could be wrong, but you would have to know she's gonna think last year was the final one, or maybe because this is going to be the 10-year celebration, and we you know, our expectations is that this one is gonna be spectacular, um, and making sure that everyone would be able to attend it. So uh that may be the reason.

SPEAKER_10

Gotcha. Yeah, it was really nice yesterday. Last year I remember seeing Martin Kimber and um Damon and uh gosh. The mayor was there.

SPEAKER_07

The mayor, yes. Uh the party was great over there as well. So I had a great time.

SPEAKER_10

And the merch, the merch was awesome.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah. Definitely. So make sure you bring your coins when you come. That's the truth. So you make the vacation.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, are you planning to go to celebration again this year or I am, I am.

SPEAKER_07

I've I've done on the track, off the tracks, uh one-day concert. Um, but it was just fun, just being there in Minneapolis with everyone.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, yeah, I'm anxious to see uh what they're gonna do with the one they're supposed to make an announcement tomorrow about the uh single-day event tickets.

SPEAKER_07

Right.

SPEAKER_10

And see how they split that up. Yeah.

SPEAKER_07

Okay. I haven't seen anything. I heard you um mention it earlier uh about First Avenue, but I really haven't seen any being closer to the concert being at First Avenue, so I don't know what's going on with that.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I mean, I was thinking this being the 10-year anniversary that there would be so much going on.

SPEAKER_08

Right, right.

SPEAKER_10

But we still don't know. We're what three months away.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, they said there's still more to come. Never know what could happen.

SPEAKER_10

Never know. Well, thank you so much for calling. I really appreciate it. Thanks for joining in.

SPEAKER_07

Okay, thank you. I'll continue to listen.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, thank you. Have a good night. I don't know what happened with my with my audio. This has happened before. I thought I had all this stuff worked out, but you know, sometimes you gotta go old school, right?

SPEAKER_08

But yeah, when you did that, I could hear her. I don't know if she heard me, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, yeah, that's true. She probably didn't hear you, maybe she did.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, yeah, but like like they said, Paisley Park said there's more to come, so more to come.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I want to know what more to come means exactly.

SPEAKER_03

Yes, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

I am all plugged in. Bluetooth is good. I don't get it.

SPEAKER_08

Oh it's just technology sometime.

SPEAKER_10

That's the joy of going live, and you never know what's gonna happen. We're gonna make it work though.

SPEAKER_08

Yep. Yeah. So I think um they had what and um at Paisley today, they had the something day and then something night. Yeah, they're doing that today. Yeah, today, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Didn't they? They had a candlelight visual earlier, right? Or they're gonna do it tonight.

SPEAKER_08

I think the candlelight is tonight, but then they have something in the day, like a remembrance or something. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Yeah, I saw where uh Mr. Christopher from Funkatope was gonna do the candlelight visual tonight down at the bridge.

SPEAKER_08

Right, okay, okay, cool.

SPEAKER_10

And uh I think um Alfonso Starr is also in town.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, okay. I didn't oh I thought yeah, I didn't know he was coming for this. Okay.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I don't know if he's doing anything or or DJing or anything like that. I think he was just down at the bridge doing a live uh on Facebook.

SPEAKER_03

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_10

And he was talking about um his uh set coming up in June, June 7th. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

And I think that's at the green room, and the green room is cool. I saw uh St. Paul and the funk all stars there. It's really cool.

SPEAKER_10

Okay. The green room. Um I think Martin Kimber is doing something there again.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly, yeah, yeah. It's gonna be exciting.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, those of you who don't know Martin Kimber is, I've talked about him on the show before. Hopefully, I can get him on the show someday. But he is a former member of Color Me Bad, and he does um French shows and he does George Michael shows. Really great voice. Good guy.

SPEAKER_06

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Um what else do we have? I think that's all I've got. I'm just gonna hang out here a few, and uh, if you've if you gotta go, you can go.

SPEAKER_08

I'm good. I'm all yeah. I just because of the times change, I was like, wait, it's eight. So I was all mixed up. But I got my hair done, I made it in, so I'm good. I'm gonna get I'm gonna just be right back. I'm gonna get some water.

SPEAKER_09

Okay, sure. No problem.

SPEAKER_08

I got the water. Okay, I'm back.

SPEAKER_06

All right, okay.

SPEAKER_10

I think I might have solved my own problem.

SPEAKER_06

Okay.

SPEAKER_10

I think because I had the uh source for my music open as the call came in, it interfered with the audio from the phone call. So if I would have had that music source closed, right? You solve your own problem a little too late. So we're just vibing out to some more Prince music. Can you hear this music coming through our case? This is an alternate version of a thousand hugs and kisses. So have we ever talked about any Prince concerts that you might have gone gone to in your lifetime?

SPEAKER_08

Um remember, I don't think so.

SPEAKER_10

How many how many concerts have you been to?

SPEAKER_08

Um probably okay. I saw Purple the when Purple Rain that the concert was out. I saw that twice. Right. That's a funny story. And then I saw um was that coming to America, and I was in at Madison Square Garden. Yeah, welcome to America. And he had uh Misty Copeland, and I was like, because you know, as a dancer, I was like, oh my gosh, who is this woman? You know, and she's so graceful and doing her little dancing with him. And I saw that twice.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_08

And then when he was with Third Eye Girl, he was going to like these little venues, like intimate venues. And I was living in Phoenix at the time, and um he came to one of the little venues out here in Phoenix, and what is the name of it? Uh it'll come to me. Uh I can see it, but anyway, he went to that and I was like everybody was standing, but I was like the second row standing. Yeah, and I feel like like Prince, you see me. And yeah, so that was the third eye girl, and that that band was good.

SPEAKER_09

Okay.

SPEAKER_08

So those were the times I saw him.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, nice. Yeah, um during the um the third eye girl tour was probably 2013, 2014, something like that.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly I saw him 2013 because I remember um I just was like April 2013.

SPEAKER_09

Okay.

SPEAKER_08

Yes, because I I was getting my car in the next month, and I was looking at cars because I had kind of been, I said I'm gonna stay in Arizona, and I was like, okay, I'm gonna get a car and all that. And I remember I was looking at cars, and the concert was in April, and I had got my car the next month, May. Okay, nice in 2013. Okay, yeah, that was that was the last time I saw him. Wow.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, you saw him more recently than I did. My last Prince concert that I saw was the Welcome to America Tour, and I uh that was in uh 2011, I believe it was.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, and then he because Madison Square Garden loved him over there, so he added some more shows and it went into 2011. And I was like, Oh, should I stay and go to some more shows? I was like, I can't, I gotta save money. Yeah, I didn't, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

You know what's funny about that Welcome to America tour? We had no idea that there was an album called Welcome to America.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly.

SPEAKER_10

All we knew was the tour, and I'm like, what? Why why is he calling this tour the Welcome to America tour?

SPEAKER_08

But there wasn't he's probably at some point trying to promote that album that never got released, so exactly because even I think in some shows at the beginning, he did like a song from the album with the with the girls. I I forgot, and he was like, where he's kind of talking and like where you can do this and they something, something in America. I know that's on the album, I forget the song. Yeah, he did that at the concert, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

And that was a fantastic album. You know, you have to wonder why he didn't release that album, and I'm sure there are tons of other albums that didn't get released, but that was an awesome album. And when I listened to it, yeah, I still listen to it to this day, and wow, why didn't it get released?

SPEAKER_08

Oh no, that that is good. And there's a song where he sounds like Curtis Mayfield. Yeah, I forget the name of that. So I was like, why? So I don't like Curtis Mayfield. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Definitely influenced by Curtis Mayfield on that album and um Parliament, Funkadelli, George Clinton, and Shelby is all over that album.

SPEAKER_08

Yes, yeah. So yeah, that was a good album.

SPEAKER_09

Oh yeah, oh yeah.

SPEAKER_08

That was a good concert, and and that I think in that concert is when you went to LA and he was trying to save the forum. So he did all those concerts at the forum, yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Right.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, that that was that was a good concert, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Oh yeah, that was yeah, that was my last time seeing him. And um I was telling a story a couple nights ago when I was doing a show about uh celebration. Or no, it wasn't celebration, was it? Yeah, I can't remember. There's too many shows. Anyway, I was telling the story of when he came to Atlanta for the final concert. And I debated and debated and debated and debated, and Atlanta's only like four hours from me driving. And uh I said, no, he's probably gonna take this tour all over the country, he's probably gonna come closer like Charlotte. So I'm I'm not gonna go. But if I would have known that would have been his last, I would have been there for sure.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly, exactly. Yeah, that's yeah. I I remember um Funkatopia did kind of did something on the show.

SPEAKER_10

Right.

SPEAKER_08

He had the last show, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, Mr. Chris Reed, he told about the entire he he went both nights, the first and the second night, and he covered the show from start to finish, man. And when I heard that, I was like, I yeah, I realize now that I should have gone.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, yes, yeah, that's why like now when I don't go to something, I'm like, oh I get what is that they say, FOMO Fear of Missing Out. I'm like, I should go, you never know.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, yeah. My first show, and I've told this story on the show many times, was the 1999 tour.

SPEAKER_03

I was back, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

I was just a little kid. I was like 14. And um, I'm not gonna go into the whole story about Morris Day walking down the street. If you want to, guys, if you want to see that hear that story, go back to some of my previous episodes. I talk about that in detail, but anyway, that was my first experience. And uh let's see, 1999 three. I seen her about 10 times total, and then I saw him for the 1999. I saw him for the Love Sexy Tour.

SPEAKER_05

Oh, he did. Wow.

SPEAKER_10

And Charlotte, 88, and then gosh, I gotta think about it now. Um uh the jam of the year tour. I I've seen him that whole entire tour was so long, it lasted a couple years. I think I saw the jam in the year tour at least five or six times. Um I kind of chased them around the country. I chased them up and down the east coast at one point. Ah trying to catch all the shows.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, yeah. It's fun doing that.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

And then they kind of get to know you, and they're like, oh, I saw you at the last show.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Yeah. I went to a couple of the after shows from the Jam of the Year tour. Um, I told the story of going to an after show in Atlanta where the Nation of Islam rushed them in, and they were pretty much stampeding over people and people going nuts, girls screaming and crying, and he only stayed in the club for like five minutes and left.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, got crazy.

SPEAKER_10

Got crazy. And you know, I can I I can't understand what he must have felt like to have so many people staring at him the entire night. And that was only one night. Imagine what that's like on a on a regular basis, you know.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly.

SPEAKER_10

It's a lot, yeah. As shy as he was, I can imagine what that felt like.

unknown

Right, right.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, how did you feel about the new song that came out yesterday?

SPEAKER_10

Um, the tear yeah, yeah, yeah, we're talking about that one earlier. Um with this tear. Yeah, yeah, the slow song. It was released in '91 and later given to Celine Dion. And they released his version on yesterday.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I like it. I see people are using it every time I hear I'm like, oh yeah, okay.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, yeah. So hopefully that's a good sign of things to come from the estate.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. Exactly. Hopefully.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I was talking earlier on. Go ahead.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, I was gonna say, and I know that Londell said he wanted to talk to people yesterday, but I didn't hear any more about it.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I didn't hear any more about it either. I know that happened yesterday, and he invited the public to come out and ask questions and stuff. Yeah, and I haven't heard anything. I did see one lady that I follow on uh TikTok that was going to go. She lives in Minneapolis, and she wanted to go and ask about the uh piano and a microphone tour being released on audio and video. And her response was it's coming, but I don't know what that means. I don't know if that was an answer for him or not.

SPEAKER_08

Okay. So we just have to wait and see.

SPEAKER_10

It being ten years later.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

This would be the perfect time to do it.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly, exactly.

SPEAKER_10

And we've all been to pay well, those of you who have been to Paisley saw it up on the big screen in the um what is that, the um stage area, the concert area where they show all the footage up on the big screen. They showed the footage from piano on the microphone, and it was pristine quality.

SPEAKER_08

I think I saw a little bit of that today from something. Somebody was there and I saw that. I was like, okay.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, yeah. When I was there back in 2019 or 20 2020, I think it was. Uh the soundstage area was showing it showed about maybe 10 or 15 seconds ago. She's gone again. Oh yeah. Anyway, I'm hoping that they uh it being 10 years later, they will finally release that on DVD.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. Yeah. So you're gonna try to go down in June, but just to be amongst the people and see the shows.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, that's what I'm gonna do. Um probably not I want to check and see what they announce uh tomorrow. Tomorrow, exactly about the single-day event tickets and see how they've got that split up and what the prices are. So if there's one particular thing that I'm interested in, I may partake in that partake in that depending on the price.

SPEAKER_08

Yes, exactly.

SPEAKER_10

But if not, my plan is to at least be in Minneapolis with the family.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. I got you.

SPEAKER_10

All right, um under one big giant purple bubble, and we have so much in common.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I I want to see who is Miguel performing by himself, or is he performing with any of the purple the prince bands or anything? So I want to see what Miguel is doing, and yeah, I would like to see that.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I'm curious about that as well. I know that he uh he's definitely big time influenced by Prince.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

You can hear it, you can see it.

SPEAKER_08

You know, yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

And um what they're gonna do with Morris Day, is it gonna be with the time or is he gonna be doing solo stuff?

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, because that year that I went, it he it was Morris, but he was with MPG, like the MPG played behind him, it wasn't the time, yeah. Right. So we'll see. Yeah, might be his band that he tours with. I don't know, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Revolution and the MPG together would be nice.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, that yeah, that would be nice at First Avenue.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I hate I'm gonna miss that, but and you know, w what I always thought would be interesting is to attend one of the panel discussions.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, yeah, those are nice, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

I always wanted to do that, but I think I'm gonna end up missing it again, unless that's included in right, unless that's included, right? Yeah, the one-day event.

SPEAKER_08

That would be cool. Yeah, we shall see. Tomorrow's the day, right?

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, they're gonna make the announcement on tomorrow. Um but we'll have to check and see what the prices are gonna be like because right now the $900 uh general admission is out of the question, yeah, and definitely the VIP for $1,400.

SPEAKER_08

I know, out of the question, and and I like to do the VIP because you I like when it's the concert you're towards the front, but I was like, I can't do that, yeah. So I'll just have to wait for the single day.

SPEAKER_10

Right now I am playing uh an unreleased song called No One Else. Okay, trying to stay under the radar of the YouTube cuts. Play anything that's been released coming after you don't want to get shut down.

SPEAKER_06

Exactly.

unknown

Okay.

SPEAKER_10

Um I mentioned Love Sexy, I mentioned Jam of the Year. Uh let's see, 2000, there was a hit and run tour that he did.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_10

That was around the time of the release of Rainbow Children.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, okay. Yeah. See, like in the late 90s, I didn't really keep up because um it was like leaving college, trying to find work, pay rent, you know what I mean, and then then trying to become a flight attendant. So I missed a lot of the 90s stuff, yeah. And then it's like when I started working with Delta in what was that '96, '97. So then that's when Prince, like when in I think 1999 he came out with something for New Year's Eve. That's kind of like when I got back into it, like back into Prince and seeing what he was doing.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

And another call coming in. Let's see if the online.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_10

Where are you coming from? We're going old school again. Thanks for calling your own uh old school. How you doing tonight?

SPEAKER_07

Hey, hey Russell Hey Russell, can you hear me?

SPEAKER_10

I can hear you.

SPEAKER_07

Hey Russell, this is hey time here, this is Stephanie Mills calling.

SPEAKER_10

Hey, how are you, Stephanie?

SPEAKER_07

Um came in late. I've just been watching everything from the stuff on Twitch, the DJs on there, just everything. This has been a full print thing, and I didn't want to forget about just happening to hop on YouTube and I've seen you and I promised this call in. But just wanted to say thanks for having us live stream today. Um celebrating the meeting. Um, thank you, Tony, for always celebrating them in your way as well. Just wanted to um just wanted to come on here and say that I just wanted to come in instead of always being in the chat. Um, I was in club house three sisters earlier lately, and I was gonna speak. Um, I think my man decided just to talk in the chat, and I said I'm just gonna save it for Russell when he comes on tonight.

SPEAKER_10

Well, I appreciate you coming in, Stephanie, as usual.

SPEAKER_07

All right. Well, that's all I wanted to say. I'll go ahead and watch the rest of them. All right, have a day.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, all right. Yeah, I gotta get that worked out, man.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah, I thought we had it.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Back to the drawing board. Anyway, we're we're making it work. We're making it happen.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. Everybody's doing something tonight, I guess. Everybody is good so we could all be together. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, exactly. Oh man, we got another one.

SPEAKER_06

Okay.

SPEAKER_10

What's up, brother?

SPEAKER_06

What's up, man?

SPEAKER_10

I'm on it right now. You're live. Don't cuss. Nothing, man. We're just hanging out and vibing out. 10-year anniversary of Princess transition tonight, and uh, we're doing all things purple tonight, man. What you got to say?

SPEAKER_01

I'm just happy to be alive, brother.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, we all are, man.

SPEAKER_01

Hey, I'm happy, my brother.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, what's your favorite album, man? Don't say purple ring.

SPEAKER_01

I'm not gonna say no album because I'm gonna just be late.

SPEAKER_10

Hey everybody, this is my boy George. He's been on the show a time or two before, but uh, yeah, we're uh this is vibing out, man.

SPEAKER_01

Ain't nothing wrong with that, man. Keep on doing what you do with your free friends. Hey, make it do what it do, baby.

SPEAKER_10

Making it do what it do.

SPEAKER_01

Go ahead and your business. I wish you'd hear them now.

SPEAKER_10

All right, man. You have a good one. We're holla later. Later.

unknown

Dang.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, my good friend, George. Big big supporter of the podcast.

unknown

That's the game. Oh, it's true. It is you in high school.

SPEAKER_10

You you were my homecoming anyway.

SPEAKER_06

This track hasn't been that long.

SPEAKER_10

No, no, this track is keep on loving you. You and as you can tell, it's kind of overlayered with Anita Baker giving you the best that I got in the back.

SPEAKER_08

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_06

Giving you the best that I got.

SPEAKER_08

I don't think I ever heard this one.

SPEAKER_10

Really? Okay. It's called Keep on Loving You.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, keep on loving you. Okay.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I'm really disappointed in the phone calls coming in tonight. I know it looks kind of crazy holding the phone into the microphone, really. You know, it is what it is.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. And you can once it's over, you're gonna be like, oh, what's this?

SPEAKER_10

Yes. I've done that before, and I'm like one of those things. What other tour did I see? I see. I stopped at um the hit and run tour in 2000. I think the next next time I saw France was for the musicology tour in 04.

SPEAKER_08

Oh wow, you got to see a live concerts.

SPEAKER_10

I did, I did.

unknown

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_10

I did. I'm so grateful. There are a lot of people out there that have never seen them live.

unknown

I know, I know.

SPEAKER_10

Anybody that had the chance to do so.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

The greatest entertainer that ever walked the earth, in my opinion.

SPEAKER_08

Mm-hmm. And everyone that played with him is good. Cause like when I saw Sheila E, or if I see St. Paul and his band or MPG and their band, I'm like, wow, these guys are good. They are really good.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah.

unknown

Hell yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I remember um in 04 when the musicology tour started. Prince had his uh MPG Music Club. Um, and if you had a membership, you got front row tickets.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, really?

SPEAKER_10

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Wow. See, I missed all of that.

SPEAKER_10

Oh yeah. So I think I forgot what the subscription was, but like you pay an annual uh subscription fee and any concerts that he did. Um, you were sure to be on the on the first row.

SPEAKER_08

Oh wow, that is nice, that is really nice.

SPEAKER_10

It was nice and it was loud, it was very loud. We were right by uh one of the big speakers in speakers, yeah. Let's see, Christopher, thanks for joining, Christopher Curry. Appreciate you joining in. Playing all my YouTube jams, anything rare. Oh yeah. We're doing the rare stuff tonight, brother. Trying to stay under the radar of the YouTube cops. Alright, what is this one called here? Uncle Sam. This is Uncle Sam. Um try not to play it too loud so that it it doesn't drown out our conversation, but I'm trying to at least get it high enough where people can actually hear. It's a nice little vibe to have running in the background. Oh man. 10 years doesn't seem like 10 years has passed.

SPEAKER_08

I know, I know. But yeah, like I said, I was I was like a little emotional yesterday, like, oh gosh, I it I remembered this time and what happened and everything. And then you know, everyone was coming on and saying, like, oh, he wouldn't want you to be sad and all that. So I was like, okay, yes, let me play his music, let me do go out and have a good day. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_09

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I made sure that um I represented well today with my my Prince Bling here.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I have on my little lavender and my purple lights. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Not many people said anything because, like I said, you don't meet die hard Prince fans every day, so people just kind of look like nice shirt, you know.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

But uh really they don't understand the meaning behind it. So I had to basically explain today. Some people said something about it, like, oh, you're a prince fan. I like your shirt. Well, thank you. Yeah, I'm a prince fan. You know what today is, right? 10th anniversary.

SPEAKER_08

Right.

SPEAKER_10

Guess what else? Got a podcast you should check out, right?

SPEAKER_08

That's what right, that's what you gotta do. Yeah, yeah. So yeah, I'm trying to think what else.

SPEAKER_10

Uh I gotta I got a black screen for you again, Tanya. It's been that way for the last oh really, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

I can see you, I can see me too.

SPEAKER_09

Oh, you're up?

SPEAKER_08

Okay, yeah, that's so weird.

SPEAKER_09

That is weird.

SPEAKER_08

I have everything on, yeah. I and I can see me.

SPEAKER_10

Okay, yeah, I see your name there, but uh I see nothing but a black screen.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, maybe it's just uh connection bat, maybe it'll come in. Yeah, oh funny. Because I was like, oh, everything is good because I can see me and I can see you.

SPEAKER_09

Right.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, you're you're on Wi-Fi, correct?

SPEAKER_08

Yes, okay.

SPEAKER_10

It's one of those other technical difficulties that happen from time to time.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, see, now I can hear you really clear, whereas before it was like scratchy. Okay, but now that you're clear, you say you can't see me. Yeah, it's crazy. Yeah, one thing I like about Prince 2 is um the guitar solos.

SPEAKER_03

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, I just get you. Like when I listen to the live concerts and he does his solo. I I even put it on my Instagram. She's always in my hair, and he did like a different version of it, and that guitar solo, I was like, Woo!

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, he's so great. Oh, yeah, he's such an underrated guitar player, man. I don't think he really ever got the accolades that he should have gotten as a guitar player, but he's definitely up there among the greatest.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. If not the greatest, right, right.

SPEAKER_10

I mean, so versatile, he could play anything.

SPEAKER_08

Yes, yes, you know, you name it, he could play it right, yeah. RB, um, rock, rock, gospel, um alternative, yeah, everything, country, because he did the song for Kenny Rogers, yeah. That was country. Yeah, yeah. Uh that's right. Yeah.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_08

I like when um the bands go on social media and they post about the day, like St. Paul came on and talked about his, you know, Prince and the uh with the day he found out Prince passed, and then Shelby and My Tay were on with um Susanna. Yeah. I like when they come on.

SPEAKER_10

Oh yeah. Yeah, I love to see what everybody else is doing out there. I try to um stay abreast of what Shelby's doing, what um Morris Hayes is doing, um, all of those guys, St. Paul. I mean they're staying busy, is what I like. Yeah, they never stop, you know.

SPEAKER_08

I know, yeah. Even um, what's the other one? Uh, what's her name? Bass player. Is it Brhonda? Bronda.

SPEAKER_10

Rhonda Smith.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, she's been all over the place and bands and stuff. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I haven't seen a lot of you remember um Kat Dyson that played with Prince.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, yes. I I kind of learned of her later on.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, yeah. But I know she's I reached out to her recently about coming on the show, but I didn't get a solid response. But she was uh she was she was with Prince during the Jam of the Year tour. Yeah, Rhonda was on on bass.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I I even feel like when you listen to her talk, it's like she got bass in her voice. She's like, and you know, and I just it's like a little bass in her voice, yeah. It's so cool.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, Rhonda is cool.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, I reached out to um Renato Nato. Yes, I sent an email to like tell him to come on the show, but he he didn't I didn't hear back yet, but I did reach out to him. Okay, okay, yeah.

SPEAKER_09

I appreciate it. I appreciate all you do for us.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, so we'll see maybe in the future.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, that would be nice to have Ronado or what else I was gonna say.

SPEAKER_08

Oh I haven't heard this one either.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, this is um what did I do? Yeah, this is a live performance.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, okay.

SPEAKER_10

It's from an after show uh back in the I want to say late eighties. Real real bluesy.

SPEAKER_07

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, what did I do?

SPEAKER_08

Okay. You got that real deep cut. I haven't heard of these.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

I had to go digging deep today to make this uh special.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, yeah, gotcha.

SPEAKER_10

And at the same time staying protected and safe away from operating.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. So crazy. I know. I I think that's what happened to fucking Topia um on his the Facebook.

SPEAKER_10

On Facebook, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, he had to make another Facebook page. Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I know that that really bothered him because he had so many followers on exactly, exactly.

SPEAKER_08

That would kill me too. I'll be like, ugh.

SPEAKER_10

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_08

I don't I don't know exactly what happened, but it wasn't good whenever I know because I've I've you know they I've been shut down like maybe on Instagram like a day. Yeah and I I didn't even know what I did, like it was one something, it wasn't even music, I didn't even know what I did, and then the next time was music was um Olivia Dean. I think I did something okay. So it's been a day, but you know, weeks and then months, hard.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, you know, um speaking of those situations, my original TikTok account was hacked by someone, and I could not get it back, and no matter how hard I tried, I had a lot of followers over on my TikTok account for this podcast, and you know, I had to jump through hoops to gain access to it, uh and it still didn't work, and there's no way of contacting TikTok to get your account unlocked or whatever. So they locked it up, and I had to create a whole new one. Just like oh yeah, slowly rebuilding that.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

That's just another platform. Um YouTube is is still growing, which I'm thankful for. You know, after doing this for a few years, it's finally going where I want it to go. So I can continue to um put out what people want to see and hear and they like it, then hopefully my following will grow. Okay. It's all about sharing and keeping the legacy alive. You know, a lot of people think that I do shows about prints only, but it's it's mainly about prints, yes, but uh also I do like uh tributes to other artists, RB artists, funk artists from back in the day, new and old school.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, yeah, so yeah, yeah, yeah. I think I saw that you had um I forgot who on. I was like, oh, okay, look at that. Okay, yeah. And then you had Robin on, I think. Robin was on, yeah. Yeah, uh-huh.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, Robin was on. That was my birthday show. She came on for my birthday.

SPEAKER_08

Cool.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

That was cool. Yeah. I'm excited though for like June to come. Just well, I'm excited for tomorrow to come to see what's gonna happen for June. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, Christopher Curry, those after shows are amazing. I've never I I've been to some after parties, but the after parties that I went to, Prince never performed, but um, the ones that I've listened to, they are awesome. In fact, some of the after shows were even better than the concerts.

SPEAKER_08

That's what I heard too.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, you never knew what he was gonna do.

SPEAKER_08

Right.

SPEAKER_10

It wasn't scripted, there was no set list or nothing. He would just call something out and they would play it.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. Exactly.

SPEAKER_10

And then I've heard stories about after shows happening and like at the wee hours of the morning, like he'd do a full two, three-hour concert and then show up for an after show at like one or two or three in the morning and play till the sun came up.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. I was on yeah, I was on Instagram when they did um it was Ruth, his manager, and DJ Rashida. Yeah, and they were talking about 3121 and the after parties and all that. I was like, wow, that sounds great.

SPEAKER_10

Oh yeah. Um this man ever asleep.

SPEAKER_08

He just they said he didn't.

unknown

One more time. That's crazy.

SPEAKER_10

Music just kept them going.

SPEAKER_08

Yes, yeah, because it's true. When you love something like that, and then you you're making it and creating it, and you want it right, you will stay up until it's right, you know, because you love doing it.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, yeah. I've I've heard stories from his bandmates, you know, talking about him being down at Paisley Park in the studio at like two or three in the morning, and they'd be at home sleeping, and he'd call them up and say, Hey, I need you down at the studio.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, that's crazy. Wow. So yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Nonstop music.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly. Uh I I guess like in Hollywood now, they're about to go on the stage. Oh no, well, maybe it's starting. I want to see those videos from the uh show with Mayate Shelby in St. Paul.

SPEAKER_10

Oh yeah, yeah, definitely. Looking forward to those videos as well.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, uh-huh.

SPEAKER_10

Caught some of the videos from the Dakota last night. They uh they look really great. Sounded really great.

SPEAKER_08

Liv war yeah, yeah. Liv was good too.

SPEAKER_09

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_08

I think the last celebration I went to, she was there, and I got to see her.

SPEAKER_10

Okay.

SPEAKER_08

Live, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, she was on uh uh The Voice last year, I think. Last season.

SPEAKER_08

Oh yeah, that's right. Yes. What what was it? What's the not the voice, what's the other one? With um uh America's Got Talent. That's what I think she was on.

SPEAKER_10

America's Got Talent.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I think, yeah, I think that's what she's on, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I I lose track of those um singing reality shows. I used to be a diehard American Idol fan.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

This is this this is the first year that I haven't really paid attention to American Idol.

SPEAKER_08

Right, yeah. It's yeah, because it was American Idol, then it's the voice, and then it's America Got Talent. Yeah, yeah. Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_10

All right. I think I'm probably gonna go one more song and then call it. Let's kind of calm down a little bit.

SPEAKER_08

Oh, yeah, it's like 9 30 your time. It's 6 30 seven here.

SPEAKER_10

West Coast.

SPEAKER_08

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_10

This is face to face. And it's got that uh the beat from uh there comes the sign.

SPEAKER_09

Yes, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Wow, that's funky. Yes, yeah, I haven't heard that one either. Wow.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, I may compile a list and send it to you so you can look these songs up.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, thanks. I don't see them all face.

unknown

I kinda like that. Yes, I do, even though I never seen your face.

SPEAKER_10

And if I haven't already, I'd like to thank everybody who joined tonight, hung out with us as we celebrated the 10th anniversary of Princess Transition. Appreciate you as always. Thanks to everybody who called in tonight. Um apologize again for the technical difficulties, but we did make it work somehow, somehow, even if we had to do it old school. Um I think the first caller, her name was I'll say Angie. And then Stephanie Mills, and then thanks to my boy George for calling in tonight.

unknown

Please don't miss the screw up. It's just a female night.

SPEAKER_10

And thanks to Tanya D. Harris for stopping by and hanging out with us tonight. She turned into a co-host. Like I said, they're probably all tied up doing things tonight.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah. Yeah. So if you go um in June, are you gonna record anything or like like hey?

SPEAKER_10

Oh, yeah, definitely.

SPEAKER_08

Okay, cool, cool.

SPEAKER_10

Definitely gonna do some live stuff.

SPEAKER_08

Exactly.

SPEAKER_10

Um last year I had correspondence doing it for me, but this year I'll actually be there and can do it myself. So it should be a lot of fun.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

I know I had um gosh, I'm drawing a blank as far as far as her name.

SPEAKER_08

Um yeah, the girl, I I she was last year. I I knew her, I forgot her name. But she was helping me, yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, she was out in the rain doing live correspondence for me.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I saw that.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah. Yeah, that should be a whole lot of fun. Anxiously awaiting to see over the next few months um what the plans are for other places throughout Minneapolis. Hopefully uh the block party is not all we're gonna get, you know.

SPEAKER_08

Right, right. Yeah. Did well have you ever seen when they did like Prince is on the screen and then the band is playing? I kind of like that a lot.

SPEAKER_10

Oh, oh, I missed that, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

That's oh, that's so good.

SPEAKER_10

Yeah, they did that a few years ago at the Target Center, I believe.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah, I wish they'd do that again because I I didn't get to see that at the big arena, but I got to see it when it was um MPG and Maite dance, and so Prince was in the back, and I forget what tour that was, but it was when he did Thunder All Through the Night. Okay, okay, and she was dancing and it was MPG, and he was like in the back, and then they're playing along, and then she was dancing. It was so good, it was so good, like an actual concert. Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm.

SPEAKER_10

I can imagine, man. I I wanted to be there for that one, but yeah, and you know, ticket prices were a lot cheaper then, so looking at yeah, it was like we were coming out of COVID, yeah, and it was a little cheaper, yeah, yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_08

Yeah.

SPEAKER_10

Alright, so I have finished the last song for tonight, and I think I'm gonna call it a night here, but it's been fun. As usual, and uh thanks to everybody who stopped in uh and hung out with us tonight during this 10-year anniversary uh Princess Passing celebration, as I like to call it. And if you haven't already, uh head over to YouTube and subscribe to me there, and hit the bell for future notifications forever I drop a new episode, you'll be notified. And I'm also over on other platforms like TikTok, uh Instagram, and I have two Facebook groups, and I'm also over on Twitch, all under the handle, the Freak Fotomist Podcast. And Tanya, you want to give your information where people can find you?

SPEAKER_08

Okay, yeah. On TikTok and Instagram, I'm Taboro, which is T-E-D-A-V-O-R-O. And then on Facebook, I'm Tanya D. Harris.

SPEAKER_10

Awesome. You heard it here, folks. So again, I appreciate you joining in. And Tanya, thank you so much for hanging out.

SPEAKER_08

You're welcome. Thanks for having me.

SPEAKER_10
