Welcome back to Sisters on the Scene.
SPEAKER_00I'm Bad Mad. And I'm Hollywood Hill. And today's Sisters on the Scene episode is our exclusive Met Gala recap because the Met Gala happened this past Monday. And there's a lot going on. There's a lot of tea to spill. I have a lot of opinion, sister. And there's also a lot of lore. We thought we would take it back to the beginning. We did a little investigative journalism. Well, I can't fully take credit here. That was actually what Hillary studied in school. I was a journalism major, but I didn't do a ton of investigating. I was more the fluffy man on the street. That was kind of my niche. I thought for a while that when I moved to Los Angeles, I wanted to work for a news outlet. And also, you were part of a pop culture radio TV show at Ohio University, weren't you? Yeah, straight up. It was so much fun. It was kind of like the local e-news on campus at Ohio University. I remember I would come to the studio and watch you at your round table and talking about all the tea and pop culture of that time. So this podcast is definitely aligned with you specifically because this is what you went to school for. Yeah, I always really enjoyed talking about the hot trending topics. So the podcast is definitely an ode to what I was doing it straight up. And Maddie would come along with me and help me film my packages. I had some really fun ones. I would interview students, man on the street style. Socialites. I would dread the days Hillary would send me a text to be like, we have to film a package today for straight up street talk. Yeah, that was my package name. And I literally would be like, do we have to? Because when you are a journalist like that, you are lugging your equipment around. The equipment was really heavy. Oh my gosh, it was so annoying. And we would go to Baker Center, we would go to College Green. Baker Center was kind of the main hub because it had those escalators. So students would be passing from class to class, going up to Court Street. So that was always good because so much foot traffic and so many people we knew. Remember, we did one on Valentine's Day. Do those videos still exist on YouTube? Oh my gosh, I know I have some of them. Specifically, the one that comes to mind is the package that you did on Ohio University being haunted. We'll definitely get into that for the Halloween episode. Yeah. Because, oh my gosh, for those of you that don't know Socialites, I'm obsessed with Halloween. We need to have a whole episode because Ohio University is notoriously haunted and we have our own ghost story. We actually do. And the package that you made that is still on YouTube about haunted Athens. It kind of went viral. It popped off. It has gone viral and it still exists. So look that up if you are a Halloween or spooky buff. So this week we are taking it back to our roots and exercising our journalism capabilities because we looked up the lore on the Met Gala for all of you socialites. He'll hit him with the T. For those of you that don't know, too, the Met is a high-stylized thematic event. That's how it's described. So every single year there's a different theme, and then guests are encouraged to follow this theme in their outfits. So their outfit is very much the art. The Met Gala was founded in 1948. Wow. Tickets in 1948 were only 50 bucks. That's crazy. However, in 1948, 50 bucks was about 700-ish dollars. So that's a pretty steep price for the 40s. For a gala, I mean that's definitely a little pricey. Yeah. Well, for context, today tickets go for $100,000 a seat. Oh my gosh. I mean, it is the upper echelon. It is the event of all events. It's very prestigious, yes, but $100,000 a ticket. Crazy. Where do the ticket sales go? The ticket sales have a really specific purpose. So the Metropolitan Museum of Arts Costume Institute is the only branch of the Met Museum that needs to fund itself. So that's why these ticket sales are so important because they do go towards funding that costume institute. Okay, that makes sense because the Metropolitan Museum of Art, which is in New York City, is the fourth largest museum in the world, and it's renowned for its costume, armor. It has pieces from all over the world and relics. You can spend hours in there any given day. And so the Met Gala is their kind of tribute to the art over the years. Exactly. So every year the Met Gala has a different theme where guests are encouraged to dress following that specific blueprint. Which, if there's one thing you should know about us socialites, we love a theme. That we do. We love a theme. We love a costume. I mean, since we were young. So we are all about the Met Gala. I mean, it's so fun to see what designers are represented, what everyone shows up wearing. You might remember, too, a couple of the past scandals from the Met Gala. I do feel like Met Gala and Scandal do go in the same sentence rather well together. There are actually two really infamous scandals from the Met Gala. Okay. Hit us with the facts, Hill. Do you remember Solange and Jay-Z in that elevator? That was at the Met Gala? Yeah. So Solange Knowles, that's Beyonce's very talented sister, and Jay-Z, Beyonce's husband, got into some kind of an altercation in this elevator and it was caught on surveillance. And then released. That moment went so viral. And then Beyonce dropped her lemonade album. So I think we can fill in the pieces of what may have happened, especially sister to sister. It's like if a man does one of us wrong, he's gonna be hearing from the other sister. Yeah, I may come at you in an elevator. That moment is so pop culture coded. That is peak. That is one of the craziest moments from the Matt Gala ever. Okay, so that definitely went viral. I remember that. And then in 2022, Kim K wore Marilyn Monroe's happy birthday, Mr. President dress, and people were not happy. You were one of those people. I was one of those people. As a Marilyn stan, that dress was designed for Marilyn. A dress, quote, only Marilyn Monroe could wear. And I don't think anyone else should have been wearing it. Even Kim Kay. Yeah, you definitely had some big feelings about that as a longtime fan of Marilyn Monroe Socialites. We have at least 20 photos of her around the house, pictures, portraits. We've always had a little touch of Marilyn in every place that we've lived together because of you. And dad's gotten me some really rare ones. So we have some really amazing Marilyn picks around the house. But, anyways, I definitely was one of the people who was not happy back in 2022. I don't think she wore the original. It wouldn't dimensionally even make sense. So I think that was all hyped. But why would Ripley's say that she wore it then? That could have been an agreement Chris Jenner wrote up herself. I guess anything's possible. Anything's possible when Chris Jenner is behind it, okay? That's true. Needless to say, the Met Gala is always very iconic, but phones are not allowed inside. And also, before we get into this year's theme, I have to say I definitely would recommend anyone watching the Oceans 8 movie because it is an all-female spin-off. Some powerhouse women, but they basically plan a high-stakes heist for the Met Gala, and that is the setting of the entire movie. And if you're looking for a good movie to watch, seriously watch that one. It is one of my favorite movies to pop on when I need a little action, glamour. A lot of the actresses that were in the movie attended this year's Met. Oh, really? Yeah, you haven't seen it, have you, Hill? No. We don't like a lot of the same movies. Socialize. Hillary likes scary, I like cutie. Let's take it back to this year, sister. So this was a record-breaking year. The Met Gala raised $42 million for the Costume Institute this year. That is incredible. They've never raised that much money, and the theme this year was also really fun. Fashion is art. However, a lot of people were saying that the theme was actually Jeff Bezos. Uh, did Amazon really need to be involved in the Met Gala? Apparently so. I don't know what he has to do with fashion, but uh nothing. I mean, they obviously had a record-breaking year monetarily, so some celebrities even boycotted the Met Gala this year because they were so upset about the Bezos involvement. Reportedly Zendaya, reportedly Meryl Streep. I mean, those are well-respected women in the industry. So I just think that's definitely worth a little cliff note. That's creating a lot of dialogue online that this Met Gala feels especially dystopian, especially like the Hunger Games at the Capitol. I mean, valid, especially with how bad the economy is right now. I mean, coupled with that, the two extremes of everything going on in the world, and then this huge glamorous event with the top elite, the top 1%. I do understand the discourse online. We've just chosen to focus on the fashion because that is a piece I think worth celebrating. But the good thing about the Met is that this money is going to a good cause. It's going to support art and artists, and that's what we wanted to talk about really in this episode because the outfits, the designers are worth celebrating. Absolutely. Regardless of what's going on in the world or who's funding it, those designers put so much time and energy into these designs. Yeah. They carefully constructed everything. And I do love when it's a big moment for the designers because, you know, for some people, it's their first met. Yes, the heated rivalry boys were first timers and they looked amazing. I mean, can you imagine getting the email or the who knows if it's a phone call? Phone call? Is it a handwritten invitation? Is it a painted invitation? Does it come with a raven? Does it come with a dove? We hope to someday know. Mark our words. One day we will know how you get invited. Because we will be invited. We will be invited. We definitely want to attend the Met Gala one day. We love the arts, as we've talked about on this podcast. On that note, I think we have to get into Fame, Shame, Lame, Met Edition Socialites. If you're new here, Fame, Shame, Lame is our segment where we discuss trending stories and put them into different categories. And of course, because the Met was this past Monday, we've got to give our opinions on this. We have to. Who's our fame of the week, sister? Our fame of the week has got to go to the Olympian Lindsay Vaughn. And this was such a huge deal and personal to me because she is the Olympian who fractured her tibial plateau a few months ago. That really was not that long ago. No, and honestly, to see her on the carpet is so inspiring. She did have a cane and she took a few photos with the cane, but on the carpet, she did not have that cane out. I just think that's so inspiring for all of us baddies on break that she got right back to it. I mean, her determination is unwavering. And I know from your injury that steps are not always the easiest to conquer. So I thought she looked amazing. I was so proud of her for being there because it just reminded me so much of you and how much goes into healing. And I just feel like she just was injured. So I could not believe she was there. That's actually an amazing point about the stairs. A lot of us baddies on break still struggle with stairs. That's like the last kind of thing you conquer. But this isn't her first rodeo. She's had that break before. And, you know, obviously she has top care. And I think too, it's a lot of a mental game. I mean, I'm sure she had this on her radar when she got invited, and she was thinking, there's no way I'm not gonna attend well, she's a pro, literally. I also think this was a really big night for Olympians in general. Venus Williams, the tennis extraordinaire, is a co-chair of the Met Gala this year. She's really sweet. I worked with her for the Olympic handover event here in Los Angeles. That kicked off the announcement. It was the handoff. Tom Cruise did the handoff to us here in Los Angeles with Snoop Dogg and Dr. Dre. Venus was there. She was our host, yeah. And she was amazing. Eileen Goo also looked beautiful. She wore that outfit that was created from 15,000 glass bubbles, and then actual bubbles would come out of the dress. It's the craziest thing I've ever seen. So gaggy. And also, I wonder why Ariana Grande didn't wear that during her Glinda tour. That would have been amazing. So, Lindsay Vaughn, girl, you are our fame of the week. We're so proud of you. And from inspiration to disappointment, we have to get into our shame, sister. Hmm, who are you gonna pick for your shame? My shame is Sarah Paulson. Do you know what I'm going to say? I know exactly what you're gonna say. What in the out-of-touch is happening? Socialites, for those of you that did not see Sarah Paulson's outfit, it truly made no sense to me. It didn't make any sense when I saw it for the first time, and then it didn't make sense when I was seeing video of her explaining the idea behind it. No, it just continued to get worse. So explain to the socialites what that was all about. So Sarah Paulson's a very famous actress. She just was in all's fair with Kim Kardashian, actually, which got a lot of pub, but she came into the Met Gala with a dollar bill across her eyes. We mean that the dollar bill had holes punched in it and it was wrapped around her head somehow, with like a designer couture gown. She said that it was in protest to call out the 1%. Like, babe, you are the 1%. And you're attending the event. If you wanted to protest, just don't come. Exactly. She described the outfit as quote blinded by money. I mean, the hypocrisy, the irony. I could go on. You are at the most elite event of the year. And I would also say absolutely diabolical that it wasn't a $100 bill. It was a $1 bill. That might be what I'm most upset about. You chose to wear a $1 bill when the Benjamin exists. And I feel like it is kind of shameful because it is. If you're in the 1%, own it. Or if you're in the top 5%, own it. Why do we have to pretend? You know what I mean? You don't have to pretend to empathize with other people who aren't in your position, but you could make donations. If you want to show that you're an advocate for people who are not in your position, why don't you donate to some incredible organizations or nonprofits? Or you could be a Zendaya and simply sit this one out to take a stand, but don't wear a dollar bill and pretend you're protesting the rich and famous. Those are your peers. Moving on to our Met Gala lame. And this is very on brand for us. Anyone who is wearing feathers to the Met Gala when there are so many other creative options you could have done, that is just lame. It's not cool to do this anymore. It's not cool to cause harm for fashion. And I think we'll look back on this time and eventually people will feel shame for wearing fur, feathers, and platforming these when the foes are so good. Fake feathers look identical to real feathers. No one would know the difference. I can't tell the difference. Sam Smith, I'm looking at you. Also, no one wearing feathers was on our personal best dress list. Who is your best dressed of the night? Overall? Yeah. Oh, I have to go with Emma Chamberlain. I think she ate down. She was a vision. She was a vision. She looked like a top model. That gown was actually hand-painted, so that was custom Mugler. My honorable mentions go to Chase Infinity and Anok Eye. I thought both of those ladies looked so beautiful and Chef's Kiss. What about you, sister? Who were your top looks? You know, every year there's a dialogue around the Kardashians, but they rarely, if ever, miss. And I have to say, Kylie's look this year, there was just something about it that I'm like, this is so iconic. I also really liked Haley Bieber's look. I love a cobalt blue. Yeah, she looked stunning. What about worse dressed? Did you have a worse dressed sister? Cardi B, what in the actual world is going on? She is snatched and she's wearing this. What is it supposed to be? Because maybe I would like it a little more if I knew what art it was supposed to be. It looks like a human heart or some kind of organ. It looks like an organ. She literally looks like she was wearing an organ and I can't get into it. Not a healthy organ. An organ that has problems. I mean I hate to say that. True. I think that brings us to Sister says. Sister says Blake Lively needs to stay at home. I don't know why she didn't just sit this one out. I feel like all of the controversy that's been surrounding her, just stay at home. You can sit this one out. I just always feel like she's trying to gain sympathy. Did you see that interview where she tried to say that she was so shy she needed to bring pictures from her kids along? She's been to a handful of the Met galaxies. Many of gallas. So for her to act like in her interview, I'm shy, I need like pictures drawn from my kids. What are you what are you talking about? You're shy? Serena Vanderwoodson shy. The whole point of the Met is for you to have all eyes on you. Hundreds of photographers, the world is watching. I do think the tides have really turned for Blake Lively because for so many years she was America's sweetheart. She is so beautiful, but now I feel like we've all seen a peek behind the curtain, and I just don't need to be seeing her or hearing from her in this moment. No, there've been a lot of interviews, old interviews, that have resurfaced of her treating interviewers really, really inappropriately. And there was one incident where she had announced that she was pregnant, and so the interviewer had said, Congratulations on your little bump, like at the beginning of the interview, just trying to lighten the mood. And Blake said back to the interviewer, not missing a beat, and said, Congratulations on your little bump. And this woman was not pregnant. Why would you say that? Literally, why would you say that? And she's made so many inappropriate comments about her gossip girl co-stars. I do not want to be hearing or seeing her for a while. What's your hot take, sister? This is very on par for the Met Gala. Sister says, if you get invited to a costumed event or themed event, if you are not going to participate in the theme, just don't come. I actually agree with that wholeheartedly, sister. Clock it. Why do you have to act like you're too cool for the theme? And I'm looking at a few celebrities that attended this year's Met. I hate to say it, but Margot Robbie. She was not on theme. It's a themed gala. It is an honor to be invited, too. So typically the celebrities don't buy their seats. They are invited by designers, fashion companies who buy their seats for them. But the whole point is promo for these designers. So I just don't understand. It's one of fashion's biggest nights. Just don't come. It's like showing up to a Halloween party as yourself. I always hated when people tried to do that. Exactly. And yeah, this can apply to any party. You don't get points for not trying. Honorable mention, sister says, we only ever do two sister says, but I feel like I have to mention this because I've been seeing it more and more as the week rolls on. Okay. Sister says, do not AI a photo of yourself on the Met carpet. What are we doing here? The fact that even has to be said. Why are we wasting natural resources creating you on a Met Gala carpet? I don't get it. I mean, yeah, enough said. AI is really bad for the environment. We have to stop using it for literally nothing. You don't even have a question. You're just like, create this photo of me so I can look at it. So I can get the clout on Instagram. And speaking of environment, let's go out on a positive note. What is our wildlife win of the week? This is where we share a really positive story that involves wildlife or animals in some capacity to close out the podcast on a positive note. Hill always looks these up. This is her segment. I am really excited about this one. I feel like I say that every week. We love a good wildlife win. And we have to end the pod on a high note. Okay, so the green sea turtle moved from the endangered list to least concern. That's great news. That means it was previously extremely endangered, and now there's so many of them that they're moved off that list. That's amazing news. We love a green turtle. We love turtles in general. So true, sister. I mean, to see a turtle in the wild, it just does something to your heart. I just think they're so sweet and pure, and this is largely due to conservation efforts. And also, socialites, you should never touch a turtle ever, baby or full grown. If you are snorkeling, if you're on a beach, rehabilitate little babies or helping them go to the sea, you should never touch them with your bare hand. That is a great point, sister. And that's because it disorients them and they have a much higher chance of dying because they need to make their way to the water by themselves. And the mama turtles, when they're laying their eggs, really need to be undisturbed. So please just give turtles their space. They're very sensitive creatures. They are, and they're one of our favorites. In Fiji, we actually learned that in their culture, when you see a turtle, it means good luck and wisdom and longevity and all of these positive things. So turtles are like their good luck symbol. In Fiji. I think that's all we've got time for, Socialites. We actually have a big event to head to. We can't wait to tell you all about next week. Yes, more coming next week. Don't forget to subscribe to the pod and share with anyone that you think needs a good laugh. There's a lot more in store for the Sisters on the Scene podcast. So stay tuned, Socialites. We'll see you next week. See you next week. You're listening to Sisters on the Scene podcast with Bad Mad and Hollywood Hill.
