What if the greatest truth about God is also the one we struggle to believe?

That He is… approachable.

In this episode of Scattered Moments, we reflect on the quiet, astonishing invitation at the heart of the gospel—that we can come near to God. Not cautiously. Not after we’ve cleaned ourselves up. But boldly… even in our weakness.

Drawing from Scripture and the wisdom of the early church, this episode explores the tension we all feel—the instinct to hide, to strive, to prove ourselves—and the gentle call of a Father who simply says, come closer.

This is not a safe journey.
It will cost you your pride.
It will reshape what you hold onto.

But it will lead you into the life your heart has been longing for.

If you’ve ever felt distant from God…
or wondered if you’re still welcome in His presence…

This moment is for you.

Take care, notice the scattered moments, and share the grace.

Welcome to Scattered Moments. These are brief reflections on faith, adversity, and the quiet places where grace appears. I'm Matt Tullis. There is a question that quietly shapes every life, not what we believe about God, but whether we believe we can come near. Scripture says, come close to God, and he will come close to you. It sounds simple, but for many, God feels distant. Unapproachable, measured, disappointed. And yet the gospel, well, it tells a different story. We can approach him. To do so is to be rescued from the ordinary and baptized into the extraordinary. We come boldly now, not because we are worthy, but because shame has been lifted and replaced with a throne of grace. And yet we still hesitate, as if he were an angry tyrant. As if he were waiting for us to fail again. But he is not. And he invites us again to come. What kind of God creates galaxies, crowns the Kilimanjaro with snow, teaches the cardinal to fly, and then says, Come closer. What kind of God wants us flawed, fractured, wandering, to step into his presence? This is the mystery. We can approach him in grief, in joy, in shame, in loneliness, in quiet thanksgiving. We were made for this, to step into the gravity of his glory. But we must come small, always small. Because when we come small, his greatness fills the room. But do not mistake this, this is not safe. The path toward him runs through sandpaper corridors. Things we once held tightly begin to wear away. Pride, control, self-made identities. And it stings. But the closer we get, the more we see. This shaping is not destruction, it is purpose, it is becoming. Some still hide, out in the far reaches of the garden like Adam, grasping for fig leaves, covering shame with effort. We build, we strive, we construct meaning with our own hands, but it's a fool's occupation, because all along he has been calling. Do not hide. Approach. Isaac the Syrian once wrote, Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. And when you approach him, you will discover that he has already been waiting for you. That's the quiet surprise of grace. We think we are making our way toward him, but all along he has been leaning toward us. There's something in us that resists this. We'd rather prove ourselves than receive grace. We'd rather build than surrender. We'd rather hide than to be known. But Hebrews tells us that we can come boldly, not carefully, not cautiously, but boldly to the throne of grace. Not because we are strong, no, but because he is good. And maybe that's the shift. God is not waiting for you to get your life together. It's never going to happen. He is waiting for you to come closer. That's the greatest adventure of your life. The greatest adventure of your life is not out there somewhere. It begins with one step toward Him. Father, teach us to come close, strip away our fear, our pride, our hiding. And draw us into your presence. Make us small so that we can see how great you are. Amen. This has been Scattered Moments.
