On this June 3 edition of Moments Almanac, we remember the courage of the Ugandan martyrs led by Charles Lwanga, the wonder of astronaut Ed White's historic spacewalk, and the longing for freedom remembered through Tiananmen Square.

Joined by the stirring words of Joshua 1:9, a beloved missionary hymn, and a challenging poem by James Russell Lowell, today's reflection invites us to live with conviction, speak the truth with grace, and trust God wherever He leads.

"Be strong and courageous... for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go." — Joshua 1:9

Hello friends and welcome to The Moments Almanac, a daily pause to remember the people, events, and words that continue to shape our faith and the world. Today is June 3rd, 2026. And on this day, in 1886, Charles Luanga and his companions were martyred in Uganda. They were young Christians, many still teenagers, who refused to deny Christ despite intense pressure and persecution. Their witness became a seed that helped Christianity flourish across Africa. Their courage reminds us that faith is often measured not by comfort, but by conviction. On this day in 1965, an astronaut, Ed White, became the first American to walk in space, floating above the earth, tethered only by his spacecraft. He described the experience as the saddest moment in his life when he was ordered to return inside. White was a devout Methodist who carried symbols of his faith with him into the heavens. His journey reminds us that wonder and worship are not enemies. In fact, they are friends. Sometimes the farther we see, the more clearly we glimpse the greatness of God. And on this day we are also reminded of the courage displayed in Tiananmen Square in 1989 on June 3rd. Though the events reach their tragic climax a day later, the world watched as ordinary citizens stood for freedom, dignity, and truth. The images remain as a reminder that the human spirit longs to be free. Each image reminds us of the power of God given courage. Our scripture for today is Joshua 1 9. Have I not commanded you, be strong and courageous, do not be frightened and do not be dismayed, for the Lord your God is with you wherever you go. Listen again to those words. Wherever you go, into the arena, into the heavens, into the public square, wherever you go. An old hymn reminds us that courage is never meant to stay hidden. We've a story to tell to the nations that shall turn their hearts to the right, a story of truth and mercy, a story of peace and light. Those words could have been sung by the young believers of Uganda. They could have been echoed from the spacecraft orbiting the earth. They could have been whispered by those longing for freedom in a crowded square. The poet James Russell Lowell wrote, They are slaves who fear to speak for the fallen and the weak. They are slaves who will not choose hatred, scoffing, and abuse rather than in silence shrink from the truth their needs must think. They are slaves who dare not be in the right with two or three. And perhaps that is the invitation of June third to have the courage of Charles Luanga, to have the wonder of Ed White, to have the conviction of those who stood for freedom. May we be people who speak the truth kindly, follow Christ faithfully, and step boldly into whatever unknown path lies before us. O God, give us courage for the places where we are afraid. Help us to stand firm in faith, to walk in truth, and to trust you wherever you lead. Make us people of conviction, compassion, and hope through Christ our Lord. That's today's Moments Almanac. I hope you'll join me tomorrow. Until then, take care. Notice those scattered moments along your way and share the grace.
