On this June 6 edition of Moments Almanac, we remember the courage of those who landed on the beaches of Normandy during D-Day and reflect on the steadfast faith of Dietrich Bonhoeffer, who chose conviction over comfort in the face of evil.

Drawing from Ephesians 6:13, J. R. R. Tolkien's memorable words, "Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens," and James Russell Lowell's timeless hymn, we consider what it means to stand firm when the path ahead is uncertain.

History reminds us that courage is not the absence of fear. It is faithfulness in the midst of it.

When the road darkens, do not say farewell. Stand.

Scripture: Ephesians 6:13

On this day in 1944, thousands of Allied soldiers crossed the English Channel and landed on the beaches of Normandy. It was the beginning of what history remembers as D-Day, the largest seaborne invasion in history. As dawn broke over the coast of France, young men stepped from landing craft into cold water, enemy fire, and uncertainty. Many knew they might never see home again. Yet they went. Not because they were fearless, but because courage is not the absence of fear. Courage is moving forward when fear would rather have you turn back. Just weeks before the war would end, German pastor and theologian Dietrich Bonhoeffer was executed for his opposition to the Nazi regime. He had chosen faithfulness over safety, conviction over comfort. Bonhoeffer once wrote, When Christ calls a man, he bids him come and die. He understood that faithfulness is not measured by ease, but by obedience. The Apostle Paul wrote these words in Ephesians 6, verse 13 Therefore take up the full armor of God so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything to take your stand Notice the phrase, take your stand. There are moments in history when ordinary people are called to stand. There are moments in every life when the same is true. A difficult conversation, a costly act of integrity, a season of suffering, a lonely decision to do what is right. J. R. R. Tolkien wrote these words Faithless is he that says farewell when the road darkens. The soldiers who landed at Normandy did not turn back when the road darkened. Dietrich Bonhoeffer did not turn back when the road darkened, and followers of Christ are called to that same steadfast faith. We do not abandon hope because the path grows difficult. We do not surrender truth because the cost becomes high. We walk on, trusting the one who walks before us. The poet James Russell Lowell captured this truth in words that still ring across the years. Once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide in the strife of truth with falsehood for the good or evil side. Every generation faces that moment, every believer faces it as well. The courage required may not be found on the battlefield, it may be found in the hospital room, a workplace, a family struggle, a quiet act of faithfulness that no one else sees. Yet the call remains the same. Stand, not in your own strength, stand in Christ. As you go through this day, remember those who crossed the beaches of Normandy. Remember those who resisted evil at great cost. And remember 2 Timothy 1.7, for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love, and of a sound mind. When the road darkens, do not say farewell, stand. I'm Matt Tullis, and this has been Moments Almanac. Take care. Notice the scattered moments and share the grace.
