Well, tonight we will be finishing up our study on the fruit of the spirit. And tonight we are going to be talking about the last one, which will be temperance. Before we get started, I'm gonna ask my wife, if she will, to say a word of prayer before we get started. Amen.

SPEAKER_00

Amen. Amen. Dear gracious Lord, most heavenly father, we thank you and we praise you for this another day, Father God, that we can come together and receive your word. Open our spirits and understanding, Father God, as we gather around, Father God, to receive your word. We thank you, Father God, for this opportunity. We ask you to continuously bless this ministry, and we thank you and we praise you in Jesus' name. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

Amen. Amen. Okay, tonight uh we are going to finish our study with our main scripture that we've been talking about for the last three months. And that's Galatians, the fifth chapter, and verses number 22 and 23.

SPEAKER_00

Galatians 5, the amplified Bible, verses 22 and 25. But the fruit of the Spirit, the results of his presence within us, is love, unselfish concern for others, joy, inner peace, patience, not ability to wait, but how we act while waiting. Kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control. Against such things, there is no law.

SPEAKER_01

Okay, today we're gonna examine this final fruit of the spirit that is listed by Paul, and that is temperance. Temperance is often overlooked, but it is one of the greatest evidence of spiritual maturity. Many believers they want the power, they want gifts, and they want the anointing. But God is looking for people who can control themselves. A person may speak in tongues, may prophesy, may preach, and minister effectively, but if they cannot control their appetites, their emotions, their words, and desires, they lack spiritual maturity. Temperance is not merely self-discipline, it is spirit-empowered self-control. Amen. Because the Holy Spirit gives us the ability to say yes to God and no to the flesh.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

Well, what is temperance? The Greek word for temperance is agrita, and that means self-control, self-mastery, power over one's desires, and strength to govern oneself. Temperance is the spirit's ability working in us to control our passions, our appetites, our emotions, and our actions. Look at Proverbs, the twenty-fifth chapter, verse number twenty-eight.

SPEAKER_00

Proverbs twenty-five and twenty-eight reads, Like a city that is broken down and without walls, leaving it unprotected, is a man who has no self-control over his spirit, and sets himself up for trouble.

SPEAKER_01

In Bible times, this verse says that he hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down and without walls. In Bible times, walls protected cities. Yes. Without walls, the enemy entered easily.

SPEAKER_00

Yes. Amen.

SPEAKER_01

The city was vulnerable, and the city was exposed. Without temperance, a believer becomes spiritually vulnerable. Look at Matthew chapter four, verses one through eleven.

SPEAKER_00

Matthew four, verses one to eleven. Then Jesus was led by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. After he had gone without food for forty days and forty nights, he became hungry. And the tempter came and said to him, If you are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread. But Jesus replied, It is written, and forever remains written. Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes out of the mouth of God. Then the devil took him into the holy city, Jerusalem, and placed him on a pinnacle, highest point of the temple. And he said mockingly to him, If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down, for it is written, He will command his angels concerning you to serve, care for, protect, and watch over you, and they will lift you up on their hands, so that you will not strike your feet against a stone. Jesus said to him, On the other hand, it is written and forever remains written, you shall not test the Lord your God. Again the devil took him up on a very high mountain and showed him all the kingdoms of the world, and the glory, splendor, magnificence, and excellence of them. And he said to him, All these things I will give you if you fall down and worship me. Then Jesus said to him, Go away Satan, for it is written and forever remains written, you shall not worship the Lord your God and serve him only. You shall worship the Lord your God and serve him only. Then the devil left him, and the angels came and ministered to him, bringing him food and serving him.

SPEAKER_01

Let's look how Jesus is our example of temperance. Jesus was tempted in the wilderness. Satan attacked his appetite, his identity, and his authority. But yet Jesus remained under control. Yes. Now notice this. He was hungry. He was tempted.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

He was pressured. But he never surrendered.

SPEAKER_00

Yes, hallelujah.

SPEAKER_01

Temperance is not the absence of temptation. Temperance is victory in the middle of temptation. Yes, hallelujah. The difference between self-control and spirit control is many people attempt behavior modification. The world says, try harder, be stronger, have more willpower. But God says, walk in the spirit. Yes, hallelujah. I'm going to show it to you. Galatians 5 and 16.

SPEAKER_00

Galatians 5, 16. But I say, walk habitually in the Holy Spirit. Seek Him and be responsive to His guidance. And then you will certainly not carry out the desires of the sinful nature, which responds impulsibly without regard for God and His precepts.

SPEAKER_01

The Christian life is not about trying harder. It is about surrendering deeper. The Holy Spirit empowers what human effort cannot accomplish. Let's look at areas where temperance is required. Let's look at temperance over words. James three and five.

SPEAKER_00

James three and five read, in the same sense the tongue is a small part of the body, and yet it boasts of great things. See by comparison how great a forest is set on fire by a small spark.

SPEAKER_01

Many believers lose battles because they cannot control their mouths. Temperance controls gossip, criticism, anger, complaining, and even negative speech. Why are you getting mad and upset for something that somebody has said about you? My lord. First thing you want to do is run them down, go find them, slap them upside the head, throat, slam them. But that's not what the word says.

unknown

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

The word says that we lose the battles because we cannot control our mouth. Let me show you something about the tongue. You know this little muscle that sits between our upper and our bottom. Look. Proverbs 18 and 21.

SPEAKER_00

Proverbs 18, 21. Death and life are in the power of the tongue. And those who love it and indulge it will eat its fruit and bear the consequence of their words.

SPEAKER_01

Mature believers know when to speak and when to remain silent. Every battle that you try to fight is not your fight. Amen. Sometimes it is just good to don't say a word. Amen. Keep our mouth shut.

SPEAKER_00

Walk away.

SPEAKER_01

Let's look at temperance over anger. Ephesians chapter four, verses twenty-six. Ephesians with me, please.

SPEAKER_00

Ephesians four and what twenty-six. Ephesians four twenty six reads. Be angry at sin, at immortality, at injustice, at ungodly behavior. Yet do not sin. Do not let your anger cause you shame, nor allow it to last until the sun goes down.

SPEAKER_01

Be angry, sin not. Anger itself is not sin. Uncontrolled anger becomes sin. Temperance teaches us how to respond, when to speak, and when to wait. Amen. Temperance over appetite. What are you hungry for? Philippians three and nineteen.

SPEAKER_00

Philippians three and nineteen reads, whose fate is destruction, whose God is their belly, their worldly appetite, their sensationality, their vanity, and whose glory is in their shame, who focus their minds on earthly and temporal things.

SPEAKER_01

Anything controlling us has become an idol. God wants us to master our appetites rather than be mastered by them. What is it saying? What are we hungry for? We have to understand what we're that we are hungry for. We have to control what goes in us. Because what goes in us somewhere will have to come out. Let's look at temperance over sexual desires. Let's look at 1 Corinthians chapter 6, verses 18 through 20.

SPEAKER_00

1 Corinthians 6, 18 through 20 reads, run away from sexual immortality in any form, whether thought or behavior, whether visual or written? Every other sin that a man commits is outside the body. But the one who is sexually immoral sins against his own body. 19. Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is within you, whom you have received as a gift, whom God From God, and that you are not your own property. 20. You were brought with a price. You were actually purchased with the precious blood of Jesus and made his own. So then honor and glorify God with your body.

SPEAKER_01

Our bodies belong to God. It does not belong to your girlfriend or your boyfriend.

SPEAKER_00

My God.

SPEAKER_01

Your body represents the temple of God. The only one who has access to your body is your spouse. Amen. If that person is not your spouse, it's best to leave it alone. Temperance over finances. Temperance helps believers avoid greed, avoid impulsive spending, and practice stewardship. That's where a lot of people don't understand when it comes to money how you've been how your your temper, that's where we word temper comes from. It comes from temperance. And what temperance is your temper. When it comes, when your temper is in the right place, you will avoid the greed, you will avoid the all the impulse of spendings that you don't have the money for, because that is nothing but greed. Nothing but greed. Then you can practice stewardship on how to control your finances. Why is it necessary for ministry? Many people, many people, and I'm seeing this probably on a daily basis. Many people have lost ministry because they lacked tolerance or temperance. They lacked temperance. Moses struck the rock in anger. Samson lacked control over his passions. Saul lacked patience. Giftedness can open doors. Character keeps doors open. Temperance protects the anointing. Let's look at Hebrews 5 and 14, and let's look at temperance that produces spiritual maturity. Hebrews 5 and 14 reads. Five and seventeen. Oh, I'm sorry, five, fourteen, that's right. Somewhere else.

SPEAKER_00

But solid food is for the spiritually mature, whose senses are trained by practice to distinguish between what is morally good and what is evil.

SPEAKER_01

The strong meat belongeth to them that are full age. Mature believers controls emotions, controls reactions, and controls desires. Immature believers are controlled by circumstances. Where mature believers are controlled by the spirit. What's controlling you?

SPEAKER_00

Galatians five, seventeen. For the sinful nature has its desire, which is opposed to the spirit. The desire of the spirit opposes the sinful nature. For these two, the sinful nature and the spirit are in direct opposition to each other, continually in conflict, so that you, as believers, do not always do whatever.

SPEAKER_01

Good things when you want to do the flesh lust against the spirit. The flesh wants instant pleasure, and it wants quick reactions. But the spirit teaches patience and discipline. I'm going to give you some biblical examples of temperance. Tempted by Potiphar's wife. He chose holiness over pleasure. And the result was prison temporarily. Look at Daniel. Daniel refused the king's food. The result was favor, wisdom, and promotion. Let's look at Paul.

SPEAKER_00

So that after I have preached the gospel to others, I myself will not somehow be disqualified as unfit for service.

SPEAKER_01

Paul said, but I kept under my body and bring it into subjection. What does this mean? Paul disciplined himself.

SPEAKER_00

Yes.

SPEAKER_01

He understood that victory requires self-control. How do we develop temperance? The first thing is stay filled with the Holy Spirit. The fruit grows naturally when connected to the Spirit. Number two, spend time in God's Word. Psalms 119 and 11.

SPEAKER_00

Psalms 119 and 11 reads, Your Word I have treasured and stored in my heart, that I may not sin against you.

SPEAKER_01

Number three, practice fasting. Fasting teaches the flesh it is not in charge. Amen. Establish godly boundaries. Avoid situations that feed temptations. Wisdom prevents unnecessary battles. All they're gonna do is try to feed your spirit with negativity. Stay away from it. There are rewards for temperance. Temperance produces peace. When emotions are controlled, it produces stability when circumstances do not dictate behavior. It produces favor. Spiritual authority. God entrusts greater responsibility to those who governs themselves. Effective ministry. Character sustain what gifting begins. A tempered believer thinks before speaking, controls emotions, lives discipline, handles criticism well, resists temptation, manage time wisely, and honors commitments, walks consistently. God is raising a generation that is not merely gifted but governed. The next move of God will require believers who have power under control, emotions under control, desires under control, and words under control. Because temperance is evidence that Christ is ruling in us. Amen. Temperance is not weakness, strength under control. It is not the absence of desire. It is the mastery of desire through the Holy Spirit. A believer who walks in temperance becomes trustworthy, mature, stable, and effective in ministry. The Holy Spirit produces in us the ability to live above the impulses of the flesh and walk in victory. What is temperance? Temperance is self-empowered, self-control. It is the ability to govern our thoughts, our emotions, our desires, and our actions according to God's will. Can a person have gifts and still lack difference? Yes. Gifts are given by God, but fruit can be developed. Many have gifts, but spiritual maturity is revealed through fruit. Is temperance the same as self-discipline? Self-discipline is part of it. But biblical temperance comes from the Holy Spirit working within us. And why is temperance important in leadership? Leaders influence others. Without self-control, leaders can damage people. And they can damage their own testimony. How does fasting help develop temperance? Fasting teaches the body that is not in control and strengthens our ability to submit to the spirit. What area requires the most temperance? Many believers it is controlling the tongue, the emotions, and the reactions. This is a good one. Can temperance be learned? Yes. How? Prayer, the word, obedience, and yielding to the Holy Spirit. How do I overcome repeated temptations? That's a good question. Stay in God's presence. I said this Sunday, renew your mind with scripture. Yes. Establish boundaries and deepen on the Holy Spirit daily. What happens when a believer lacks temperance? They become vulnerable to temptation, to instability, to poor decisions, and to spiritual defeat. What is the ultimate evidence of temperance? Consistent obedience to God even when the flesh desires something different. This is my closing. Father, in the name of Jesus, produce in us the fruit of temperance. Teach us to govern our words, our thoughts, our emotions, our desires, and our actions by the power of the Holy Spirit. Let us become mature believers who walk in discipline, holiness, and spiritual authority. May our lives reflect Christ in every area. In Jesus' name.
