Abby

Welcome to the Will Create Podcast. This is the show where I interview creative people about cool projects that they've made. From backstage theater designers to local film studios to creative writers and everyone in between. This is your one stop shop for creativity. Let's get creative. She's an SFX artist. She's an actor. She's like really cool. Jill, hi. Welcome to my podcast.

Jilliann

Hey. I'm here.

Abby

I'm so excited you're here.

Jilliann

I'm excited to be here.

Abby

Yeah. I'm so glad. So, what are we talking about today?

Jilliann

I don't know. What are we talking about today? No, I'm kidding. I think we're talking about p arts.

Abby

That's crazy. That's a crazy that's a crazy intro. Talking about specifically lady parts. Lady parts. Which is a full film that you made?

Jilliann

Yeah. Full film.

Abby

Through Spring Lane Studios that you made with Jared's production.

Jilliann

Yes, Jared Campbell, yeah. Nice, nice. He's the founder of Spring Lane Studios.

Abby

Nice. Do you want to tell us a little bit about Spring Lane Studios?

Jilliann

Well, Spring Lane Studios is just like a little group of friends that came out of Spring Lane Cinemas. The local movie theater in Sanford. A group of friends got together under one person, Jared Campbell, and they made a movie 10, 11 years ago now.

Abby

Was it really that long ago? Wow. That's crazy.

Jilliann

20 oh going on 12 years. I think the first like shoot was in 2014. Wow, that's crazy. And then the very first movie, I guess, came out in like the full movie 2016, something like that.

Abby

They have a bunch of like short films. They're all horror?

Jilliann

Most. Yeah, most. Because uh there's the Rosemary and Sage.

Abby

That's true. Rosemary and Sage. That's more action.

Jilliann

Yeah. Yeah. Action and cool cops and stuff.

Abby

Which Jill happened to star in.

Jilliann

Whoa! Me.

Abby

Remind me, were you Rosemary or Sage?

Jilliann

Sage. Sage. Always the Sage.

Abby

Oh yeah.

Jilliann

Samantha Sage. Samantha.

Abby

I was cracking up when I first watched that movie because of the names specifically. They're double initials, and I don't know. I found that to be like the funniest thing ever.

Jilliann

Yeah. Reba Rosemary. I almost had to have him change the name to Rita. Yeah. Because I was like, I can't really think I can say Reba. Like I don't know why it was so funny to be like, I love you Reba.

Abby

You're like, I need it to be any other letter right now.

Jilliann

Exactly.

Abby

That's funny. Yeah, you got through it though. You got through it.

Jilliann

Yeah, I did. I did. It was funny. So they started making movies 12 something years ago. And then I joined in whenever they started doing more horror films. Because I do special effects makeup.

Abby

Yeah, you do. She's just like really good. They're really gory. We used to work at a theme park a while ago, and we would work the Halloween event. I just worked as like a scare person. I was not very scary.

Jilliann

No, you were great.

Abby

I was great, but I was not scary.

Jilliann

Yeah, I guess you didn't jump out-

Abby

I was I was like a greeter, so I was I was cute. I was cute. I was like people's false sense of security. But Jill made some really awesome, awesome, scary makeup.

Jilliann

Yeah, nasty, icky makeup designs.

Abby

Nasty icky, bloody makeup. Yeah. Don't don't you guys worry. I'll I'll include some of the pictures she sends me.

Jilliann

Whoa! Whoa!

Abby

Whenever, whenever this uh the post post comes out on Instagram, well, I'll I'll make sure I include some whatever she sends me.

Jilliann

It'll be there.

Abby

It'll be there. By the way, follow my Instagram. It's the Will Create podcast.

Abby

So we talked about Spring Lane Studios, so but how do you identify as an artist?

Jilliann

Oh yeah, me. So I guess I identify as a now let me use my college degree here. Multi-hyphen artist, I guess.

Abby

Multi-hyphen ate.

Jilliann

Yeah, oh yeah, yeah. Yeah. Multi-hyphen.

Abby

There you go.

Jilliann

College degree didn't work that much, I guess.

Abby

Well, it's it's okay. It's just a little rusty. That's all.

Jilliann

Yeah, yeah. It's just a little rusty. It's been too long.

Abby

It's not. It's just over a year. So you're a multi-hyphenate artist. Yes. What what are your what are your hyphens?

Jilliann

Okay, so film actress, yes. Special effects, makeup, really into that, especially the gore side of it. Even though I can do like the more beauty aspect of it. Yeah. It's not as fun.

Abby

It's not as fun. Like everyone does that.

Jilliann

I mean, I guess I did like glam Beetlejuice that one time. That's true. But anyways. So yeah, I do that. And I just create on the side. I make little TikTok vlogs.

Abby

They're so cute. I love them.

Jilliann

They're fun. TikTok videos are really fun. Like, I don't care that I don't get that many views or whatever. I mean, sometimes I get a little bogged down, but it's okay.

Abby

Hey, that's okay.

Jilliann

Because I'm like, oh my god, this might get tons of views. And it's like 200.

Abby

Hey, that's that's not bad.

Jilliann

I feel like most of them are like two to four hundred views I get- -but that's pretty good. But yeah, make little TikTok vlogs. I like to paint and draw and stuff. I mean, I'm not that good at it.

Abby

That's okay. It's all about it's all about the vibes.

Jilliann

Exactly.

Abby

It's all about doing what makes you happy.

Jilliann

Mini canvas paintings. You already know.

Abby

Oh, oh yeah. Alright. So now that we know a little bit about you and a little bit about Spring Lane Studios, what project are we talking about? What specific project are we talking about today?

Jilliann

Specific project. Well, we just wrapped a 20-month-long production. Yeah.

Abby

Oh my. I didn't realize it was that long.

Jilliann

Yeah, it took a while. Um it's okay. You know it was made with love then. We did not give up on it.

Abby

Everyone put their heart and soul into it then. Mm-hmm.

Jilliann

Their heart, their soul, their gas money, their sandy things. Poor Jared.

Abby

Poor Jared.

Jilliann

Poor Jared. I think what it is, this is the biggest cast we've had since his first one.

Abby

Right.

Jilliann

And hence why his first ones took so long to come out.

Abby

Because obviously it's a lot harder when you know it's a small studio and like it's hard to get people together.

Jilliann

Yeah. Yeah.

Abby

Makes sense.

Jilliann

And when you're all like trying to do different things but still want to come together for a little project.

Abby

Right.

Jilliann

People have different levels of availability.

Abby

Yeah. Yeah. Yeah. So that makes sense.

Jilliann

But yeah, we just wrapped that.

Abby

Did you say what it's called? Lady Parts. I don't know if you did.

Jilliann

Yeah. I didn't. But that's okay. That's okay. Yeah, the 20-month-long production called Lady Parts. And it's actually the sequel to Migraine.

Abby

Oh, really?

Jilliann

It follows one of the characters. Well, the person who plays it is Donnie. It follows Donnie's character from Migraine, who is this art shop, art gallery owner.

Abby

Yeah.

Jilliann

And they end up getting murdered at the end of Migraine.

Abby

R I P.

Jilliann

And then it follows who the heck murdered them.

Abby

Mmm.

Jilliann

In lady parts and-

Abby

Fabulous.

Jilliann

Yeah. It takes place in like the 80s, too.

Abby

Oh, nice.

Jilliann

Yeah. That was ...

Abby

That's exciting.

Jilliann

...difficult.

Abby

Oh, yeah, I imagine.

Jilliann

Yeah. Having to like hide the TVs and stuff whenever we did filming. Yeah. Yeah. Literally put a tarp over the TV one.

Abby

That's funny. That's actually really funny. I love that.

Jilliann

It worked.

Abby

It works.

Jilliann

But yeah. Yeah. Sequel to Migraine called Lady Parts.

Abby

Heck yeah. Uh is it is it out yet?

Jilliann

It comes out April 4th.

Abby

April 4th? Oh my gosh. Amaz.

Jilliann

Ye ah. Day before my birthday.

Abby

Day before your birthday.

Jilliann

But no, it comes out April 4th, 7:30 at Spring Lane Cinemas. Hey. Also that day, there's a full film festival at Springlane Cinemas.

Abby

That's exciting.

Jilliann

There will be movies made by directors literally all around. Awesome. Not the world, but the United States. Like we have a couple people from Texas and a couple people from California, I think, that are coming.

Abby

Yeah. So you're talking about the film festival. There's some people coming from like Texas. Where else?

Jilliann

Oh, yeah, Texas, California, I think. But yeah, a lot of people come in. A lot of people submit their stuff. Jared is the one who literally runs it all.

Abby

Am azing.

Jilliann

So he gets the submissions, he looks through the submissions, and he picks which ones, and then he assigns awards as well. Yeah, it's a fun thing. This is like the fourth, I want to say it.

Abby

Nice.

Jilliann

Yeah, fourth year that they're doing this film festival. It's so much fun. There's vendors and stuff there always. There's like old nostalgic 80s movies and stuff like that that like the vendors have. There's people who create stuff.

Abby

Nice.

Jilliann

There's this one person that comes and she creates like scrunchies and stuff like that out of just random fabric.

Abby

Perfect.

Jilliann

It's amazing. It's great.

Abby

Love. That's so exciting.

Jilliann

Yeah.

Abby

It'll premiere what does it have like a set like YouTube premiere as well? Or ?

Jilliann

That I don't know. Yeah.

Abby

After that, at some point.

Jilliann

Yes. Some at some point. Actually. Oh. Little secret. It will not be able to be released on YouTube.

Abby

What?

Jilliann

It's extremely explicit.

Abby

Oh right.

Jilliann

Yeah. Can't talk about exactly what happens, but just know it's never been done on film before.

Abby

Right.

Jilliann

Right.

Abby

Right. But like there, you can see the other things on YouTube. So like it's okay. You guys won't be left completely in the dark. There's other things.

Jilliann

There's other things. Everything else is on YouTube. Ye ah. Just not this.

Abby

But Lady Party's just gonna be kept a little secret for you guys.

Jilliann

Yeah.

Abby

Oopsies. Well, just a little.

Jilliann

We'll have DVDs for sale. Yeah.

Abby

Yeah, yeah, yeah.

Jilliann

Teehee.

Abby

There'll be DVDs for sale.

Jilliann

Yeah. And it'll probably be fully released in the theaters. Perfect. So you know.

Abby

That's awesome. That's exciting.

Jilliann

Down for a road trip.

Abby

Heck yeah. Sounds fun. Alright. What was something that you learned while filming Lady Parts?

Jilliann

Oof. Okay, be aware.

Abby

Okay.

Jilliann

This is not a dig, but poor Jared. Like I said, a lot of the audio was messed up in the entire movie. Pretty much has to be redubbed. Oh, right. Yeah. So it's gonna be rough. Yeah. But there was this one time during filming that we kind of spent a whole day where I had traveled to my hometown and spent a whole day filming and just for it to not not be good at all. Not in the slightest. Yeah. The fan was going, the audio was just completely off, the rustle was next to the microphone. So we had to completely refilm that.

Abby

So fun.

Jilliann

Yeah.

Abby

Yeah.

Jilliann

But low key, I guess, taught me patience with it.

Abby

Patience is a great skill. Yeah.

Jilliann

Yes. Yeah. Yes, it is.

Abby

Very important. I feel like in anything creative, it your patience will, in fact, get tested a lot.

Jilliann

Yeah. Oh, also, I kind of had to face a fear of mine. Extreme memetophobia. And uh, it's not a spoiler, but in one of the scenes, I basically have a lot of spit all over my face. And my face kind of gets shoved in it, and it's like, hey.

Abby

Hey, but you feel like I tackled something.

Jilliann

Exactly.

Abby

Awesome. Exactly. For y'all who don't know, emetophobia is the fear of throwing up. All right. What was your favorite thing about this experience?

Jilliann

Oh, um Favorite thing? Well, one, obviously, seeing my besties all the time there. Like I said, it's literally a group of friends that just make movies with each other. Perfect. So it's really nice to see everybody and talk to everybody and and we do fun stuff. Yeah. Yeah. Before and after and while we're filming, and it's just a good time. Oh no, the second thing. I forgot. Oh, oh yeah. Because of my last performance job, I learned some valuable skills about fighting.

Abby

Or kind of like stage combat. That like don't pretty much. Fake fighting. Fake fighting. Fake fighting that looks real.

Jilliann

Yeah. So I I learned that and also with that job came learning how to fall safely and just pretend like fainting and dying basically and stuff like that. So in this movie, I actually got to use that skill. One of the scenes, my character comes in and faints and hits her head on the table, and I have this whole this whole like sequence of how to safely do the faint. And it looks really, really good. Because instead of him having to cut it where oh she falls and there's a hit and then not on the floor. It's I actually it's a full sequence of just me falling.

Abby

That's nice. I love safety. I love safely falling.

Jilliann

Yeah, it's great. It's great. It's so much fun.

Abby

Love not getting injured on the job.

Jilliann

I love knowing how to fight and being able to make the noises with it too and stuff and just safely. Yeah. It's great. It's great. It's a fun skill to have. I stole skills. Yeah. Maybe.

Abby

What advice would you give to someone who was doing something similar? Someone who is recording something, maybe with their friends or just any smaller recording company. Anything like that.

Jilliann

Keep doing it. Keep doing it. Just keep going. Nice. Just keep going. Like I said, it was 20 months. The first movie they made was 12 to 14 months, and they thought that was too much. 20 friggin' months. And I mean, technically, this entire month of March is the 21st month because he'll be editing it and redubbing it.

Abby

True.

Jilliann

So a 21-month production for it to be put on at the film festival. But we kept going. Nice. Always keep going. And when he made his first couple of movies, they were kind of a bust. They were filmed on an old little camera. Like they're cute. When they were filmed on an old little camera, everybody was kind of just joking around, you know. Lots of improv. Sure. Lots of figuring it out. And just having seen that growth is amazing. And it's all because he just kept going. Just kept doing it. Nice. Even when you know availability didn't work, or a lot of times friends or things didn't work out, people fell through.

Abby

Happens.

Jilliann

Mm-hmm.

Abby

Mm-hmm.

Jilliann

Keep going. More people kept coming in, cooler people. Yeah. People with different skills. We have people in their own band now.

Abby

Nice.

Jilliann

We've got a guy who does really cool sound effects. I came along and I do special effects makeup. They had one person who was helping. She does absolutely amazing cosplays. But she had her own dang, you know, she's grown. She she's grown. She's grown. She's taking care of business. She's an independent woman. Love her.

Abby

She's got stuff to do.

Jilliann

So she wasn't really there all the time, but then I came into the picture and I had just recently because 2018 is when I got into special effects makeup. I say that. But I did it one time when I was 10. Anyways, that's a different story. It was there in childhood, basically, but consistently started in 2018. Yeah. This is about like '21 now that I came to him with my makeup skills, and he was like, absolutely yes. The next movie is Candle smoke, which is a short film that we literally filmed in 12 hours. That's where I got to show off my makeup skills the first time. All I have to say is keep going, keep growing. You never know who's gonna come in your life. You never know what's gonna happen. Post it, post it, post it. I know I get caught up in my head when TikToks and stuff like that, but then I see people in their day-to-day life. I follow a lot of like random TikTok moms who are just posting and they're like, post, girl, just post. So I'm just posting. I'm just doing. Just do. You never know. Just be. Just create. Yeah. And I know that's so generic.

Abby

No, no, it's good. It's good. It's good advice. Keep keep creating. Yeah. Yeah. But it makes sense.

Jilliann

And discouraging days are doing it. Exactly.

Abby

It's okay if nobody sees it. If you're the only one who sees it, you should make art that makes you happy, not because you think that people will like it.

Jilliann

I agree. And discouraging days will happen.

Abby

It will. It will.

Jilliann

It will happen. But like I say, I'm gonna power through. Going.

Abby

What was the process of filming like? So it was 20 months, so obviously there was a lot going on. But could you kind of walk us through what a regular day on set looked like? If you record in sequence, kind of like that.

Jilliann

Yeah. Okay. So this one was a lot different than the movies we had done in the past. Like I said, Candlesmoke took a whole 12 hours. We filmed that. We had the venue for 12 hours. So that's why we did it. It was a western, so we needed a certain look. Little barn, yeah, saloon-esque. Yeah, we had a saloon. It was nice. Perfect. But anyways, candles moke, Rosemary, and Sage. We had a bunch of different locations. And then Migraine was filmed in a cabin on Beach Mountain. Shout out.

Abby

Shout out.

Jilliann

Over six days, five or six days of it.

Abby

It wasn't super long.

Jilliann

Yeah. Let me tell you, it was a rough week. Not that like anything went wrong. It was just school, that, two jobs. I was like, but yeah. Yeah. It was a lot different from that because again, over 20 months, it was still in one central location, which was one of the characters, Raven's house. It was at her house, but we had to go there. Right. Five, six, seven. No!

Jilliann

Put your hands down. I see every single one of you.

Jilliann

Anyways, so it took a while going to the same place back and forth. Also, like they filmed in a grocery store.

Abby

Oh.

Jilliann

So other than using the place that I worked at, the restaurant my cousin owns, like, okay, yeah, that's easy. I asked my cousin or shout out Dean, love him. But this place was out of nobody knew the owner. We put it on Facebook that we needed a location, a grocery store location, a film. And it was actually in the place that I grew up, Deep River, that these people just reached out and we were like, absolutely, we want to help. Come to our grocery store, 10 p.m. And they literally filmed in that grocery store. Best thing about it, it was like frozen in time. Nice. So it did look like everything from the 1980s.

Abby

That's awesome. I love that.

Jilliann

Yeah, exactly. It was freaking great. So that was a lot different than anything else, but it's what made it fun too. Right. So just having the different locations was a different process in general for the movies, as well as having so many people. Right. Versus a lot of the filming for Rosemary and Sage and even migraine was just me and my coworker Shay. Well, co-worker, best friend. She's great. Yeah. I love her. Obviously, yeah, like I said, we're all friends. Anyways, the second part that was like a crazy process was the fact that my character is deaf.

Abby

Oh, I forgot about that.

Jilliann

Yeah.

Abby

I forgot about that.

Jilliann

Yeah, I had to brush up my ASL skills real good. Like I was looking up three or four different signs, I guess. Well, videos that were I wasn't being played with, basically. Like it wasn't just some person signing and yeah, it was wrong or whatever. But anyways, yeah, that process was a little bit scary and different. One, because I couldn't respond. So acting with her was a lot different. Right. And also having my character is deaf, yes, but the whole thing is that she can read lips because nobody else knew ASL other than me.

Abby

So that would be -

Jilliann

Too hard, too small of a budget, you know. Yeah, exactly. So I pretty much I taught Shay little signs back, you know, water, stuff like that. So she could be saying the sentence and then throw in a sign or two. So that it looked like authentic.

Abby

That would be more like just like uh you signing and everyone else no one else needs to do signs. Yeah, yeah, yeah, exactly.

Jilliann

Like, how can you not sign back, but you know what I'm saying?

Abby

Right, exactly. You can only that yeah that would be weird if like no one else did any signs at all.

Jilliann

Exactly. So so but it's also really funny that nobody else but okay so I guess I should should say so my character Sarah is an author. Um she's put out a couple of books she one of them actually being a play that I wrote in college called Moldy Ravioli. Shout out playwright class but literally one of the book covers he made is called Moldy Ravioli. Beautiful the other one is called Mother Nature which I mean spoiler it might be a trilogy to Migraine. Migraine, Lady Parts, and Mother Nature who knows I don't know we'll see oh also earlier when I mentioned Donnie's character his name is well their character's name is Tracy. So I remember that now but yeah so Sarah is dating Marla and Marla is kind of mysterious. We don't really know what her job is she's diehard in love with Sarah though. And spoil alert whenever Sarah goes missing a spoil she's like first one on there like ready to go where the heck is my freaking girlfriend. So clearly they're very close. They live together you know they're dating of course so yeah I had to teach Shay some signs and stuff like that but it was super fun. I don't know I did less- I know this is probably gonna answer one of your other questions about what I would do different which is I would do I would have done more character development. More storylines for me characters because I had to for Marla because it was like well how can I connect with her without talking? How would I portray this to her to give her something to play back on me too you know because I'm sure it was difficult for her as well. Yeah I just wish that I had done a little bit more deep diving on on my character. Yeah because I kind of just went into it and I low key forgot halfway through that she was a freaking writer and I was like wait a minute.

Abby

You said whoa since when?

Jilliann

Whoa when when these books get here? I wrote them oh shit that's crazy.

Abby

Since you've already touched on a little bit what would you have done differently you said you would do character work you would do you would do a deeper dive into that is there anything else you would have done differently? Bbecause this is a long process this was like almost two years so.

Jilliann

Yeah I guess I would have brushed up on my ASL skills a little bit better as well. Yeah because it had been a couple of months well I was actively in ASL class when we were starting the production and then got out of it by the time it was like we're ready to film and it was like I haven't sat in an ASL class in a couple of months.

Abby

I haven't chatted in ASL for a while.

Jilliann

Like cool. Yeah, I just wish I would have brushed up a little bit more and chatted with you a little bit like it's okay we were killing it hey we were killing it at our our Christmas job.

Jilliann

Heck yeah we were it was great we were we were little elves together and we signed together it was great.

Jilliann

Oh my gosh, I totally forgot to ask you this so you've talked about why you're in Spring Lane Studios and like that's a small company with your friends that you guys started and you joined in but like what about this specific project are you passionate about? What makes- what drew you to this script? What drew you to this company? The floor is yours. Specifically like I'm passionate about it because it had a lot of different challenging special effects um things like a body part that is very hard to replicate manipulate and just yeah like I said never done on film before literally by anybody.

Abby

Right. So so difficult to figure out how that would look

Jilliann

Yeah, yeah, yeah. But I was super passionate about it because I was like heck yeah like this is something I have my comfort zone like I've gotta go for it. Yeah to that. But in general being passionate about working for Spring Lane Studios well I say working for creating with?

Abby

Creating with.

Jilliann

T here we go.

Abby

There we go.

Jilliann

Creating with you know We'll Create..

Abby

We'll Create you know.

Jilliann

Yeah yeah!

Abby

You get it you get you get it.

Jilliann

I see you. Yeah anyway but what really makes me passionate about it is being with a group of friends really close knit amazing people a lot of us don't really see and or talk and or have much family so we are very friend oriented and we've just built a little community out of it and also just being passionate for my friend Jared because this man deserves it. He literally he started working at Spring Lane cinemas freaking 19 years old now he's the manager he's doing so much for the community making little movie nights on Wednesdays he does way back Wednesday amazing and does like yeah old movies and stuff 35mm film like he's really introducing people to old movies and stuff like that. Yeah it's great that's cool also doing like Thursday night movies for the staff there nice is one showing appreciation to the staff and two showing them culture film culture basically culture that's how we started being friends is going to movie nights and literally being cultured by Jared because he knows so much good film and everything. Anyways amazing but yeah being passionate to work for him as well because I just remember him telling me the story about how he was this little boy 10 years old picked up his first camcorder in the 90s and never put it down. Adorable even Lady Parts the bloopers behind the scenes well the behind the scenes I guess I should say blooper.

Abby

Yeah not the bloopers for a horror movie.

Jilliann

But well there are there are bloopers because of me! There's so many bloopers with Rosemary and Sage too. I make a lot of sound but like I get really nervous!

Abby

That's okay it's okay!

Jilliann

It's okay a little bit we can that's okay it's okay all is well but yeah just just being being passionate with him as well and wanting to help his dream grow wanting to help the people around me like the guy who does our sound effects the people who are in the band want to help achieve their dreams as well all while they're helping me achieve mine which is giving me special effects makeup to do like so cool.

Abby

Yeah. It's awesome. Well is there anything else that I didn't ask you that you want to touch on?

Jilliann

I do want to shout out Spring Lane Cinemas if you're ever in Sanford, North Carolina you should definitely check out Spring Lane Cinemas because they also have an old video rental store there now. Nice which is super duper cool they take donations from local and whatever VHS, Blu-ray, DVD, they have some laser disc, vinyl, stickers, old TVs and VCRs and stuff like that for sale and then movies for rent. They got a little membership thing going on that's super cool. Amazing and yeah see he's just he's made a great community at Spring Lane cinemas it's a good time there. They got games and good popcorn made fresh every day every day name another theater that does that. I couldn't. You can't. Can't. But yeah!

Abby

Well Jill thank you so much for coming on my little podcast!

Jilliann
