Your testimony is not about you — it’s about Jesus.

In this episode, we explore how to share your testimony in a way that faithfully proclaims Christ. Drawing from Scripture, theology, and practical evangelism principles, we’ll walk through a simple framework for clearly communicating the gospel, structuring your story, and calling people to respond to Jesus.

If you want your testimony to move beyond a self-improvement story and become a tool for evangelism, this episode is for you.

Your testimony is not about you.

SPEAKER_00

Your testimony is about Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

If the listener walks away more impressed with you and your journey than with Christ, something has gone terribly wrong.

SPEAKER_00

Your testimony is not the gospel, but it can proclaim the gospel if you prepare faithfully.

SPEAKER_01

And for those of you who don't think you have a radical testimony, you do, because you have been brought from death to life, and you must share that story with the world. Welcome to Off the Sidelines, a podcast from Central Bible Institute, the deployment center at Central Church, where we equip believers to move from watching ministry to doing ministry. All of our service is rooted in the gospel. We love because Jesus first loved us, and we serve because Jesus first served us. I'm Greg Suckert.

SPEAKER_00

And I'm Brianna Sucert. And today we're talking about something every single Christian has and almost nobody uses well.

SPEAKER_01

Your testimony.

SPEAKER_00

And specifically how to share it so it actually points people to Jesus.

SPEAKER_01

Because a lot of us either ramble, focus too much on ourselves, or leave the gospel out entirely. And we're going to fix that today.

SPEAKER_00

So let's start with the honest question. Why don't more Christians share their testimony?

SPEAKER_01

Fear. That's the big one. People are terrified of saying the wrong thing, sounding weird, or being rejected.

SPEAKER_00

And I think some people just feel like their story is not interesting enough. Like, I grew up in church, I wasn't a drug addict, nobody wants to hear that.

SPEAKER_01

Right. And that mindset reveals a misunderstanding of sin itself. If the only testimony you consider radical is one built around sensational sins, sex, drugs, and rock and roll, then you've not reckoned with how serious every sin actually is. Every single sin is a big deal in the courtroom of God. Every sin separates us from Him and makes us deserving of everlasting hell. So whether it was the public parties or hidden pride, sexual immorality or self-righteousness, God had to send his son to pay for it with his blood. That means every testimony is radical because every testimony is the miracle of God saving a sinner and bringing them from death to life.

SPEAKER_00

That's such a good point. Every salvation is a resurrection.

SPEAKER_01

Exactly. Another problem is that people are passive. They wait for the perfect moment, the perfect setting, and that moment never comes, so nothing gets said.

SPEAKER_00

And then there's the issue of just not being prepared. You have not thought through your story, you've never actually put it into words, so when the moment does arrive, you stumble.

SPEAKER_01

Which is why we are going to give you a simple framework today, because preparation removes the excuse.

SPEAKER_00

The other problem, and this might be the most common one, is that people share their testimony but leave out the gospel. They talk about how Jesus changed their life, but they never actually explain who Jesus is, why we needed saving, what he did. The good news is missing.

SPEAKER_01

And if the good news is missing, it is not a testimony. It is just a self-improvement story. And here's the thing: we can all point to things that changed our lives. A self-help book will change your life. The gym can change your life. A diet can change your life. Even a new blender with really sharp blades can change your life. But we're not here to share a self-improvement story. We are here to share a salvation story. And for that, you must have the clarity of the gospel. So let's go to the foundation. Why does your testimony matter? Why does sharing it matter?

SPEAKER_00

Well, Psalm 96 gives us a powerful answer. Verse 2 says, Proclaim the good news of his salvation from day to day. Tell of his glory among the nations, his wonderful deeds among all the peoples.

SPEAKER_01

Notice the connection there.

SPEAKER_00

And 2 Corinthians 4.5 takes it further. Paul says, For we do not preach ourselves, but Christ Jesus as Lord. That is the target. Your testimony is a vehicle to preach Christ.

SPEAKER_01

Here is the hard truth. Your story does not belong to you. Your entire life, your family, your location, your experiences, even the very breath in your lungs is a gift from God. That includes your testimony. It is his story working through you.

SPEAKER_00

Which brings in the featured doctrine for today's episode. In chapter 11 of Greg Allison's book, 50 Core Truths, he talks about the Trinity.

SPEAKER_01

This might seem like an unexpected connection, but think about it. The Trinity is not just an abstract theological puzzle. It is the foundation of your salvation story.

SPEAKER_00

Scripture teaches that there are three persons who share the one divine nature of God, and all three are personally involved in your salvation. The Father sent his son into the world to seek and to save the lost. The Son laid down his life for you, bore the punishment you deserved, and rose again in victory over sin and death. And the Holy Spirit made you born again, took up residence inside you, and now indwells his people as the very temple of God. One God, three persons, all working in perfect unison for your redemption.

SPEAKER_01

So when you share your testimony, you are sharing a profound story, a story of the Father, who is now your Father, the Son who sought you, bought you, and brought you into the fold of God, and the Spirit who now lives in you and empowers you to proclaim. That is not just your story. That is the story of the true and living God putting his grace, his love, and his mercy on display for the world to see.

SPEAKER_00

And what I love is that Greg Allison says that the Trinity is not a distant doctrine. We experience it. Prayer is addressed to the Father in the name of the Son, in step with the Spirit. Salvation flows from all three persons.

SPEAKER_01

Keller puts it memorably in Center Church. He says, God is triune, and therefore love, friendship, and community are intrinsic to him. He did not create us because he was lonely. He created us to share in the love that already eternally existed within the Trinity.

SPEAKER_00

So your testimony is an invitation to step into that love. It's not just, hey, here's what happened to me. It's here is what God, Father, Son, and Spirit, did to rescue someone like me so that I can know the true and living God.

SPEAKER_01

That reframe changes everything. The Trinity means your story is about a God who sent his Son into the world, He made, who paid the debt you owed, and who sent His Spirit to give you life. That is the story people need to hear.

SPEAKER_00

So how do we actually do this? Well, let's get practical. There's some prep work first. Before you write a single word of your story, you need to get the gospel clear. Write it out. Then, once the gospel's written out, it's time to put it all together into your testimony.

SPEAKER_01

To present the gospel, we use a framework called the four C's. Creator, condition, Christ, and calling. Let's work through them. Creator, God made us to worship Him. Condition, we sin. We chose to reject God, and we deserve His just judgment, everlasting hell. Christ, in love, God sent His Son to live the life we could not live, to die the death we deserved, and to rise again in victory. And lastly, calling. God calls us to turn from our sins and trust in Christ alone.

SPEAKER_00

It's so important to write out the gospel before writing out your testimony because it frames the entire reason you even have a testimony. As Will Metzger says in Tell the Truth, our testimony needs truth content. It can't just be, my life got better. The power of your testimony comes from the gospel, not from you.

SPEAKER_01

After articulating the gospel, it is time to put the story together. A faithful testimony has six essential elements. As you write through each one, remember, you are the redeemed sinner in the story, not the hero. Christ is the hero. Keep Christ at the center. Work through all six elements. Get them on paper, commit them to memory, and now you have a story to tell.

SPEAKER_00

Number one, what was your life like before you followed Jesus? Describe who you were, what you wanted, what you were living for. Give people an honest picture of your sin. Not graphic, not explicit, but real. And don't sensationalize it the way the world sensationalizes a story, the way an HBO show does. Whether your life spun out of control publicly or your heart puffed up privately, your life before Christ was a life deserving of the wrath of God. And your need for salvation was a massive deal.

SPEAKER_01

Number two, how did you first encounter Jesus and decide to follow him? Describe the circumstances. What happened that made you realize you were a sinner in need of a savior? Walk people through that turning point.

SPEAKER_00

Number three, in your own words, what is the gospel message you came to believe? This is where you explain the significance of Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Don't skip this. This is the power of your testimony. And this is exactly why our prep work matters. Writing out the gospel using the four C's means that when you get to this part of your testimony, you already know what to say.

SPEAKER_01

Number four, how has your life changed since following Jesus? How do you know you have been brought from spiritual death to spiritual life? What is different? What scriptural fruit and evidence are you seeing? Things like love for God's word, grief over sin, love for other believers, a hunger to pray. Let the Bible define what new life looks like.

SPEAKER_00

Number five, include one Bible verse that has genuinely impacted you. Let the word of God speak in your testimony.

SPEAKER_01

The verse I always share when I share my testimony is Galatians 2.20. I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God who loved me and gave himself for me. Have your verse memorized. Know it by heart, because if the word of God is the power of God to bring someone from spiritual death to spiritual life, shouldn't it be in your testimony? And number six, and this is the thing most people leave out, call for a response. And with a direct word, you would say to someone who is not following Jesus, What have you learned about following Christ that they need to hear? And give them an invitation, like this invitation in Isaiah 55, verse 7, which says, Let the wicked abandon his way, let him return to the Lord, and he will have compassion on him and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon. Invite your hearers into the everlasting life that God freely gave to you.

SPEAKER_00

Once you have all six elements written out and committed to memory, be intentional about sharing it. Tell it in your small group, share it with your kids. Post it on social media on the anniversary of when God saved you. Hand a written version to a neighbor. The opportunities are everywhere. You just have to be ready.

SPEAKER_01

Jeff Vanderstel says the main reason people do not talk about Jesus is not that they lack training, it is that they lack love. When Jesus has your heart, you cannot stop talking about him. So do the prep work, write the story, learn it, and then go tell it. Now, man, I want to speak directly to you for a moment. There is something uniquely dangerous about a man who has never put his testimony into words, because if you cannot articulate what God did to save you, it is going to be very hard for you to lead your wife, your children, or anyone around you toward Christ. Biblical leadership is not just showing up and paying the bills. It is opening your mouth and declaring what God has done. Proverbs 1130 says, He who wins souls is wise. Wise men lead their families in the gospel. Wise men share their testimony. So here is your challenge this week. Do the prep work. Write out the gospel using the four C's. Then work through all six elements of your testimony and get them on paper. Pick your verse, know it by heart, and then share what you have written with your wife or someone in your small group. That act of putting it into words is an act of spiritual leadership. God has redeemed all of you, including your mouth. So use it to glorify Him by proclaiming the story He's given you.

SPEAKER_00

And ladies, I want to speak to you for a moment. We talked today about how a faithful testimony points to the Father who is now your Father, the Son who brought you into the fold of God, and the Spirit who lives in you and empowers you to proclaim. That is your story. And ladies, that story is one of the most powerful instruments God has put in your hands for making disciples. Maybe you've been holding back because you think your story is not impressive enough, or you're afraid of saying the wrong thing. But remember what we said today. The woman next to you does not need to be impressed by you. She doesn't need an HBO story. She needs to see Jesus in you. And a testimony that is full of the gospel and grounded in Scripture will do exactly that. This week, do the prep work. Write out the gospel. Work through all six elements of your testimony. Find your verse and memorize it. And then ask one woman in your life to sit down with you so you can share it. Over coffee, after small group, wherever. Make it intentional. You never know what God might do through your willingness to speak.

SPEAKER_01

Okay. To recap for everyone, here is your challenge for this week. Do the prep work. Write out the gospel using the four C's, creator, condition, Christ, and calling. Then work through all six elements of a faithful testimony. Get them on paper, pick your verse, and memorize it.

SPEAKER_00

And then share it with one person this week. Just one. A spouse, a friend, someone in your small group. Get it out of your head and into the world.

SPEAKER_01

We hope this episode has been helpful in inspiring and equipping you to serve faithfully in whatever area God is calling you. And remember, none of our service is possible apart from the power of the Holy Spirit. He is the one who makes all the difference. And the Spirit of God is given freely to all who turn from their sin and trust in Jesus Christ alone, resting not in our performance, but in his finished work, his life, his death, his resurrection. If you're not sure that you've been born again, reach out to us at centralchurch.com.
