What an interesting bridge...is it really causing dogs to jump to their deaths???
Good evening, listeners. It's so glad. I'm so glad to be here. Thank you. Thank you for joining me with another uh story. I am excited to be here. I am excited to tell you another one. Um, I need to uh warn you that this tale tonight has some triggering themes. Some of um what I'll be talking about has to do with suicide and animal harm. And these can be upsetting to some listeners, so I'm just letting you know ahead of time so you can make an informed decision on whether or not you want to listen.
SPEAKER_01So, without further ado, here comes the tale of the Overton Bridge, also known as the Dog Suicide Bridge.
unknownShh. It's gonna be okay.
SPEAKER_02So imagine you're finally retired and you're able to go to Scotland for saving money for a Scotland vacation. So you pack your things and you grab your dog and you hop on a plane and you go. As you explore Scotland, you go over to Overton Manor, a beautiful home completed in 1895 by James White. As you explore the manor, you discover the Overton Bridge. It's beautifully made up of three archways and spans a small river at the bottom of a deep gorge. The area is quiet and leafy green. Some Scots say it's a place where the veil between the worlds is thin. As you're taking your dog Fifi for a walk on the bridge, Fifi suddenly starts acting strangely, and before you know it, she takes off and starts running towards the railing of the bridge. And in your mind you're thinking, Oh Fifi, she saw a squirrel. She must want to chase it. But no, there is no squirrel that can be seen, and she isn't chasing anything. Instead, your precious baby runs towards the railing and jumps off the bridge. The Overton Bridge is no ordinary bridge. The Overton Bridge was designed by H. E. Milner and was completed in 1895. In the 1950s, the bridge gained notoriety for dogs jumping from the bridge's parapets, which is a protective wall. Since then, there have been at least 300 incidents of dogs jumping from the bridge, with 50 of those dogs dying from the jump. And the phenomenon has led the bridge to be dubbed the dog suicide bridge. Now, before the jump, some owners have reported that their pets are exhibiting strange behaviors, uh, like being possessed or suddenly agitated. And visitors are advised to exercise caution when walking their dogs across the bridge. Basically, keep them on a leash, hold them tight, uh, stuff like that. What could be causing these dogs to behave like this? And I have found three theories and explanations that may answer this question. The first one is scent attraction. The dogs seem possessed to jump. The dogs that seem possessed to jump are long-nosed breeds, um, German shepherds, huskies, uh, malinois, stuff like that, though, dogs like that that have the big noses. Uh, and animal behaviors suggest that scents from the wildlife, such as squirrels or mink, attract the dogs, and the bridge's structure may create a visual illusion that confuses the dogs, letting them think it's a safe place to jump. The best way I could think to describe it is say you're going um, you're driving on a bridge, and you get to that perfect place where when you look out over the railing of the bridge, uh you see the landscape, and it just looks like the landscape and the bridge meet up, and you could just step over and onto the grass and walk away, but in all reality, you're on a bridge. So if you step off, you're falling however many feet. So that's what they think the dogs are seeing is like they could just step off. So, which we know is not right. Uh, then there's the paranormal beliefs where locals attribute the jumps to supernatural beliefs, including the presence of the white lady of Overton, which is a ghost believed to be the grieving widow of John White, James's son. After John passed away, she lived there for 30 more years, never remarrying. Many visitors report seeing a woman dressed in white walking around the grounds, including the bridge, or standing in the windows of the manor. Considering the dogs jumped from the same side of the bridge at the same spot, what could be scaring them to jump? Possibly the white lady of Overton? Hmm. Now, historically, the bridge has a dark history, including a tragic incident in 1994 when a man threw his two-week old baby off the bridge, believing it to be possessed. Can the dogs sense the darkness and it's too much for their little senses to handle?
SPEAKER_01And then I added a fourth one, which is my husband's theory. There is a ghost, and the dogs get scared and then run and jump to get away. That is me imitating my husband.
SPEAKER_02And it's not very flattering because he was supposed to be in here with me tonight and he's not. So I am sad. No, I'm not. I've got y'all. It's fine. So, can dogs be suicidal? In order to consider suicide, people consider two things: life and death. People turn to suicide because they do not feel capable of being able to continue living and facing their problems, such as loneliness, loss of a loved one, financial manners, and ongoing fears and stresses. To consider if dogs are suicidal, we must first ask if dogs understand the concepts of life and death. A dog's mind functions at the level of a two to two and a half-year-old human. Children at that age have no concept of life and death, and there is no evidence that dogs do either. It is clear that a depressed dog may start to disconnect from their surroundings, causing a progressive weakening of strength and energy. Dogs can experience depression, grief, anxiety, PTSD, compulsive disorders, and other issues. Self-destructive behaviors when they are depressed or grieving. Well, that sounds to me like dogs can be suicidal, but what do I know? So the Dark Historia touched on on the bridge. In October of 1994, a man threw his two-week-old son off the bridge, mainly because he believed his son was an incarnation of the devil. He attempted suicide but was caught and placed in a mental hospital. He said he chose the location due to its association with dark spirits and ancient druids. He was a paranoid schizophrenic. So did the bridge play into the darkness of his schizophrenic notion of his son, or was this just his delusion? Now you know me, I can't tell you these things without also giving you a movie or show to watch. YouTube is a great source for learning more about this bridge. Also, in October of 2022, Heel film spelled H E E L used Overton House, The Bridge, and alleged paranormal activities as a basis for the 2023 short film, The Bridge, written and directed by Scott McMillan. The short film stars Christopher Wallace and Susan Sims. I want to thank y'all so much for joining me again on another adventure. What could cause these sweet babies to jump from the bridge? Could it be dark spirits, another animal scent, or something possessing the dogs and making them jump? Now, this episode did talk about suicide, and I want to say if you're struggling with your mental health, you are not alone. You are not crazy. You are important and needed. This problem is temporary. Please don't make a permanent solution for a temporary problem. If you need to talk, there is a chat line, and the number is 988. Don't be embarrassed or ashamed. I got all my info for tonight's episode from Wikipedia, Paranormal Catalog, PsychologyToday.com, and Petshun.com. Now turn in, tune in next week as my next episode is recommended by my oldest daughter. Also, I will be having guests on at some point to tell their spooky stories that have happened to them and share a few of my own along the way. So until next week, Shh.
