One. Good evening, Maya Doers. How are you doing tonight? I know it's been a while. Please forgive me. Just so much going on in my life. I had to take a little break. I had to get my thoughts back in check. I had to get my mind back in check. And we had some family emergencies go on that needed my full attention. So now that we're back, I've decided that that was a good break to start season two with. So tonight's episode is going to be different. And I say different because I've got a couple special guests. But they're going to say hi. You ready? Say hi.

And to keep their little minds from thinking of spooky, creepy things, we are going to talk about school. And so this is something they wanted to talk about, but not just, you know, school, like, oh yeah, it's so cool. We're gonna get down into it about where they think school needs to go to help kids more, what they think needs to happen in order for kids to succeed. So without further ado, shh, it's gonna be okay. Okay, ladies. I am so excited you're here with me. You've driven up quite a ways to be here. Um, everybody have their water staying hydrated with this heat wave. Yes, yes, me too. All right, it is the third of July. We've got fireworks going off, and of course, my dogs are going crazy. Okay, so I'm going to start and I will point to who I want to answer the question. This is all your opinion, okay? So it's whatever you think. Are you ready? Okay. So for you, ma'am, what is the weirdest thing, in your opinion, to happen at school?

Um, probably if the lunch ladies serve moldy food, I think that'd be pretty weird.

No, but hopefully it doesn't.

Yeah, hopefully it doesn't. If they're doing their job like they're supposed to, you should not get moldy food. However, I will say that sometimes lunch ladies, they when they order fruit and stuff, they get the packaged grapes. Have you seen those? Yeah, I think so. And you know, as a lunch lady, you can't just go through every package of grapes and sometimes they get some mold in there. All you have to do is tell them and they'll apologize and they'll give you different fruit or something to replace it. Okay, how about you, dear? What's the weirdest thing do you think happened at school?

Well, maybe like maybe like like people just like being weird in class sometimes.

Oh, there's people that are weird in class? Like, what do they do?

Like, it they're like what they do is they like they kind of be like they like talk weird and stuff.

Yeah, like in the middle of the class would be like, I farted. Oh.

Oh my! Wow, when I was in school, you didn't want anybody to know you did that. You were like, it wasn't me, it was him, it was her, wasn't it? Okay. So I think the weirdest thing that happened to me when I was in school was let me think, because oh my goodness. We had it was the first time we had a young girl uh that was blind. And it's not weird that she was blind, it was just it was I had never seen a blind person in real life, and I was like, this is like Little House on the Prairie, you know. I wanted to be like her best friend. I was like, oh, we can, you know, play Little House on the Prairie for real, and she could be Mary and I'll be Laura, and but she was very sweet, and we we didn't become best friends or anything, but I think it was weird because I don't remember what happened to her. Like she was there, I know she was there for at least a week, and then she was gone.

Maybe she like had a such motor set where she like moved.

Maybe, but I know I was moving.

Yes, I was moving, but I didn't know she was moving. It was just that was what was weird was the fact she just like disappeared. But she had this cool typewriter that typed out what she needed to write down because you know they they read with the braille, you know, but and all that. So she had a typewriter that did that, and it was so amazing to me that she learned to use it and she we just walked around together at recess. I was kind of like her seeing eye dog, you know, just guided her around, made sure she didn't run into anything. She was very, very sweet. So, okay. So, out of the school, the time you've been in school, I'm starting with you. What is the best part of school?

Field day.

Field day? Okay, what do you do at field day?

Well, we got new PE coaches, so but last year, um, we did like this big race, like before the big race, and PE, um, our PE coach, um, she had us like she took um a class and there would be three boys and three girls that would win. So um I was in it in first grade and second grade. And um so basically if you got into the top three, um there's three different classes, like in the whole grade. Um, so then there would be um wait, what wouldn't there be like three boys? Wait, no. Nine boys and nine girls.

Yeah, that would be three different classes and three out of each.

Yeah. So then um basically eighteen of us were racing, but then um this girl pushed me into the fence. Yeah, I was gonna get like um, I think third, but then I got four.

Oh. Still out of eighteen? Yeah. That's pretty amazing. I mean yeah, but that wasn't nice of her. What can you do for that? I mean, she needs Jesus.

So did you tell her that? You should say, You need Jesus.

No. I don't know who she was. I didn't really get a good look at it.

Oh, was she at your school?

Okay. So sweetie, what about you? What is the best part of school in all your years of going, the best part for you?

Um kind of just like uh moving up to like a grade, like basically like and knowing what teacher we're getting and seeing what type of teacher we're getting.

And see if we got the one that we wanted.

Oh, yes, that the excitement of moving up grades and getting new teachers, that is pretty cool. So do you already know yet?

Like no, we know like at the like we know at the end of summer. Like yeah, like starting at the end of the summer.

Okay. And is it exciting when you get like some of your friends in class with you?

Yeah.

And then you get to talk a lot.

Do you get to though? Do you? It depends what like class they're in and what classes that we are in.

Right. My my the best part of school for me was I think when we got into high school, I wish I would have kept up with my violin playing, but I only did that for like a year. So but it was in a high school and you just had more freedom, you know.

Yeah, like you get more free time. Like how?

Like you they treated you more like an adult. Like you didn't get recess, but you you were you your classes weren't like right next to each other. You had to go like upstairs at my school or downstairs, or you had to go across the campus or whatever to get to like theater or whatever, but you didn't have teachers leading you everywhere. And my first year at high school, it was off-campus lunch, like you could leave campus to go eat lunch, but we had to ruin that, and so then the next years after that, we had to stay on campus and eat. So all right, are you ready? Yeah, what's the next are you ready? I'm gonna start with you this time. Okay, okay. What is the worst part of going to school? Okay, this is kind of hard.

I like basically um I like reading whenever we get to read and stuff.

Um the worst thing is that math, because I don't really like math because it kind of hoards it. Oh but I still do my work.

I was saying math. We got a new curriculum. Yeah, now they're changing, um, they're using the same curriculum for math, but for reading. So I bet it's gonna be a lot harder.

I don't know, but it got harder.

Did it? Yeah. It's ridiculous. All the steps y'all have to take to put one plus one is two. It's just two. You don't need to write down every single thing. Oh, anyway, don't get me started.

Yeah, it's like it's just like it's just like you basically it's like harder math than like last year's. Yeah, I wish I had like the like second grade stuff. Yeah, I never have like basically like rather graders.

The worst the worst part for me is now worrying about y'all and the other two being in school because of just the bad choices people make. Yeah, I don't want to say bad people because they get you in trouble. Yeah, yes. I don't want to say bad they've made a bad choice, but the people I'm talking about are bad people who make a bad choice that end up hurting other people. Yeah. And I'm like, but what if they're not meaning to put in a in a job? Yeah, but it's just me worrying about stuff like that. That's the worst part for me.

Yeah, I can't stand that. I will say for the most part, kids around here are pretty good about accepting the new kids. You know? Yeah. It's like who can get them into their little click faster. Yeah. Okay, are you ready?

Well, I'm just saying, you know, you you you gotta really trust a person with a secret. Like, I don't know if I trust very many people. I there's there's not counting my family. Okay, there's four people that I trust that are my friends. That well, five. No, six. Six people that I trust enough with a secret that I trust will not tell anybody. I'm not talking about not telling their husbands. Obviously, they would tell their husband because you know, like my husband's my best friend.

I immediately tell him as soon as I know. I'm like, oh, okay. So guess what? So-and-so's got a crush. But uh, that's that there's but I'm very careful about when I have a secret if I don't want anybody to know. Yeah, I don't go telling people that because I don't trust anybody to keep it except for the six people and then my family. Yeah, yeah. Okay. Here's here's where we're gonna start getting deeper in the questions. Those other ones were kind of for fun.

Okay, this one is why do you think and be serious, okay? I want you to think about this. Why do you think teachers go from being sweet and bubbly to what people call the mean teachers? Like all of a sudden, you know, back 20 years ago they were sweet and kind and just loved their job, and then all of a sudden they're just like, you're not getting an extra chance. You cannot have this. Why do you think that happens? I'm gonna start with you. Why do you think that I mean, be honest, why do you think that happens?

Well, they might be nice at the beginning of the year because like they want the new students and the students that have already been going to that school want that teacher, well want the students to know that that teacher is like nice.

Like on the first day, if like a teacher shows up, they know that this school using Bura.

But then like once when it gets probably to the middle of the year, she might go a little stricter because like kids might not be behaviors.

Right. But how what do you think causes them not even at the beginning of the year, that's just now who she is, is like the main teacher. What do you think causes that?

Kids not behaving and not listening to that.

I do have a couple people in my class that are well in my class, are like that.

Well, I would say if you're being good in class, you'll get a prize or something.

I mean, if I was bad, that would probably make me good.

All right. Okay. I was gonna say, I don't think you were noisy, but I'm very proud of y'all for that. Okay, but okay, Athena, what do you think what causes teachers to go from being nice to being called the mean teacher?

Maybe because they're starting to just get old from being a mean teacher and uh and for like the nice teacher, they're just like it's nice.

Yeah, just nice. Okay, what do you think is the solution for them to not be the mean teacher? I mean, what w how do you think we could help that?

But there's gotta be a solution, right? Okay, so alright, so here's another one. Oh, I guess I could answer the question too, but I don't know what I would do. I have had, I've seen teachers go from being the nice teacher to downright nobody wants that teacher, and it really is by all accounts, the parents.

A lot of it is the parents. The students are terrible, like their behavior is terrible and inexcusable. And when the teacher reaches out to the parent, the parent acts like it's the teacher's fault that this student is acting like this, and they don't do anything to discipline their child and say, Oh, you treated this teacher like this, you cussed this teacher, you yelled at them, you did all this, and they're like, No, she's lying. Okay, well, my child said you're lying, so they're yeah, so and they don't so the teacher's done, the teacher's tired, and I think if more parents would back the teacher up and say, Okay, I'll handle it at home and discipline their child at home, then the child knows, oh, oh my, you know, I better quit. Oh my. Okay, next uh subject that's near and dear to my heart. Who do you think my favorite people at school are?

Yeah, yes, yes, probably who? Yeah. But at any school, my favorite people are the lunch ladies, lunchmen, and the custodians. I love them. They are they work really hard just like teachers. You know, teachers work really hard and they put in a lot of time. Counselors, too, and the principals and vice principals, they're hard working. But I absolutely adore the lunch ladies and lunch gentlemen and the custodians. So on a lot of campuses, at a lot of schools, these individuals are not treated nicely. Okay.

Also like the school nurse.

Yes, I love the school nurse. Love the school nurse. Yes. We have the best school nurse at ours. I yes love her to pieces. Very smart, very intelligent, treats the kids so well, you know. But anyway, back to the question. They don't get treated nicely all the time. They get treated like trash a lot of times. Like, oh, you're not important. You're not, and I hate to say it like this because where I work, they don't do that. They treat us well, when I was part of that group, they treat us with love and respect. And they talk with us when schedules need to change. They they're very, very, very good about that. And they're very good about including us and stuff. Like when they buy all the teachers' sodas, they're like, hey, what do y'all want? They'll call down and ask us, and we'll be like, Hey, we want this. But that doesn't happen at all schools. Sometimes they'll have like a special thing for teachers, and they'll be like, Oh no, this is just for teachers. Yeah, what about the kids? Well, no, you like there's the field day is for the kids. Yeah, just so sometimes they do special things for the teachers so that you know, hey, we know you need a mental health day, or we know you need something special because you've been working so hard. Yeah, so they get them a drink and whatnot, a sonic drink, whatever. But not all campuses do that. What do you think would help like the custodians? Do you have custodians at your school?

And they I bet they have a lot to clean up, huh? Yeah. And lunch ladies, they have a lot of kids to feed.

Probably. I bet it is. But what what do you think they could schools can do, students can do to let these these hardworking people know that they are important, that they're thought of, and that they are truly valued.

A lot of our speak Spanish. But like we can understand what they're saying. Because like some of them speak English too. So a lot of them speak English and Spanish.

Yeah, a note that says, We used to, whenever students gave us notes or drew us pictures, we hung them on a fridge thing for them to see. So that they knew that we cared about the work they put in for that, and we were so appreciative. What about custodians? What do you think we could do to help them know that they're important?

Instead of making them miss, try not to well try to prevent messes. Yeah.

And then we all all of the students assign their names on them. Oh. And then it says thank you for being wait, thank you for putting the zing in amazing.

Uh-huh. I love that. Good job. So I think it's important for everybody to feel seen, feel appreciated, and that includes students. Okay. What is the hardest part do you think about making a student that nobody likes feel like they sh they're worthy of love? Do you understand my question? Is there a student that nobody likes? I'm sure there's a few if you go to a big school.

Yeah. Are they mean? No, they're really not. Then why doesn't anybody like them? Okay. What can you do to let the student know, hey, I think you're worthy of love. I I know you're worthy of love. You are a precious person. Sit with him at lunch. He may not have any license.

Well, there's a lot of people that sit with in that lunch. Well, yeah, same as me. But that person, they go to a table with a lot of people because I don't know if he well, yeah, I don't know if he feels like he's loved. I don't know.

Well, I know he does know. Yeah. About um Jesus because there's this thing I just call Calculate News Club. It's like every Thursday or Wednesday, um, they gather the kids that sign up for it um learn about Jesus.

Yeah.

Okay. Is it do you think it's important to have stuff like that at school?

Yeah, I think all schools should have.

And I think everybody should be invited.

Everybody should take a home before.

Yeah. I think it's important to let people know that they are loved because what did God do? He sent his son to die for did he just die for me?

He died for everyone. So we need to let people know that and how important they are to not only us, but to who? Yes. Yeah. Yeah. Because he died for us and they need to know that. So ladies, school has changed a lot since I was in it. Yes. I think it's I don't even know how to describe it anymore. Is it? Yeah. Yeah. What is oh my goodness. What do you think y'all could do to make a change at school to make it better? Yeah.

Well, not our school, there's just been called four. Yeah. Um they're opening it up to fourth graders now. So like the fifth graders go in announcements and stuff. Basically they make new people feel welcome. And um just make make the school a better place.

Yeah, they like help with like the big events coming up and stuff.

They help like let's just say a kid that feels upset or something, and they have this kid that they really love to hang out or something. So then that person that feels sad will go with that person.

Oh. To like talk or something. Oh, that's important. That's so good. We didn't have stuff like that when I was in school. So if you were upset or you couldn't handle because I notice, especially nowadays, kids are dealing with a lot more anxiety and a lot more I and I don't know if it was started at COVID. I don't know what started it. But it's so shocking to me that all these kids are like, you know, with they're so afraid a lot. Yeah. Like, what why are you so afraid? What is there to you know? And I don't want to question them like that because I can't even explain it, and I'm an adult. You know, what about you, Athena? I know. Oh, we can't edit it. I don't know how. I know. I'm such a bad person. Anyway, no, I'm not. Alright, lady. What about you? What do you think can make school better for everyone? Teachers included, because they are important.

Maybe like I like helping them by making Jesus and stuff.
