Vegas in July will humble you fast. We’re back from NBA Summer League with sunburn, a notebook full of names, and a much clearer sense of what actually matters when rookies and second-year guys get their first real NBA-style reps.

We talk through how to evaluate Summer League basketball without falling for the noise: why a monster box score doesn’t always translate, why bad decision making can be a real warning sign, and how role players, second-round picks, and international prospects can quietly win contracts. Welcome back to the Drafton Stash Public Az. I'm your host, Andrew. It's July 16th, and we're getting into Summer League. And we're at least my trip to Summer League and everything that goes on there. But first, we've got to hit the intro.

What is up, everybody? I survived my trip to the desert, and a desert it was. I am from Memphis, and I thought, you know, I was very arrogant. I thought because it's hot here, I was gonna be okay in Vegas. It was not, man, it was just not what I expected. It they say dry heat. They got to change it to it feels like a hairdryer is in your face the entire time. And then you would think, oh, it's nighttime, it'll be okay. And no, the the streets are like radiating the heat that they soaked in the entire time. It was wild.

But beyond the heat, for those that don't know, Summer League is kind of this uh you know, two to three week time in the offseason, I guess, so to speak, where every NBA team puts forth, you know, a roster of players that they think could be, you know, uh, you know, some some cheap prospects, some some older players that are still trying to find their way, maybe onto a G-League roster. But most importantly, it is their rookies for that, uh, for that that class. So this is like our first real attempt at seeing you know what they're gonna be able to bring. Some people really, really over overdo it and they see a couple games and think, oh my god, we just we just drafted a superstar in round two, this is over. And then some people don't put any value into it. I am kind of in the middle. I I've I've always felt that if a person plays great, it doesn't really mean a lot. But if a person plays really, really bad, I think that can mean a lot of things. I've seen a lot of players over the years that have gone to summer league and you know been like a second year or a third-year player and not performed, and then they were basically waived. They did not make training camps. So, you know, as long as you kind of hold your own, I I think you know it can't hurt you, but you know, if you play really well, it could open some eyes onto other teams as well. So I'm I'm kind of just gonna get into my my my trip overall, I guess. So I got there Friday. I met up with Chip Williams from Swing Skill. Uh, we went over and we watched, let's see, about three to four games that night, including the Bulls and the and the uh Grizzlies. That game was awesome. Not just as a Grizzlies fan, but most of people were in the arena. You could feel the energy of Caleb Wilson versus Cameron Boozer and the game starts, and Cameron is just man, he's just immediately going to Caleb, bumping him. Every time that they had a moment where it was a one-on-one situation, the crowd, man, they started to cheer and clap. It was it was like being at you know Rucker Park or something. It was awesome. When uh, you know, Caleb came down and hit a couple threes, and and then Cameron waved off somebody so that he could go pick him up. Man, the crowd got into that. You know, Cameron you know uh took his cookies at one point and went down like an and and just like dunked one really hard, and then Caleb came down like a block somebody. So it was it was really, really fun. Uh, and in general, most of the games for for the most part were were you know uh had some really great moments, certain players really like you know played well. And I will get into those a little bit. I'm not gonna just be talking about you know the players that were lottery picks, but I'll be talking about you know, first year and second year guys and some guys that were not playing very well. Beyond that, I did not realize how much networking that it was gonna be. I I thought, yeah, you just go watch the games and hang out. No, there is like a thousand people there that are all from various teams. There's you know, podcasters, there's scouts, there's agents, there's you know, just random NBA legends walking all around. So you just see people and you're like, oh wow, that that's crazy. I I was at the EYBL tournament uh trying to catch Caleb Daughter, but he didn't play the day that I was able to go. And I just saw you know Matt Barnes and Kyle Corver just like you know, chatting to each other completely alone, you know, waiting on like a ride. I was like, and if I'd had guts, I would have gone and talked to them, but I didn't. So I was just like, oh dang, that's pretty cool, you know. But that was just something that you just saw. And in the smaller gym that is not the uh Thomas Mac Arena, the players are on like, you know, on the court side, but it's really just one row of chairs. So, you know, you just walk right by them and you could just like you know, pat them on the head or something. And I I walked by and DeAndre Jordan was getting there, and he, man, that dude is like a giant in real life. It's weird because you see him on TV and I they just don't make them like that anymore, man. Like just pure muscle. Dude was like 6'11. I mean, it was crazy. Beyond that, you know, you know, most of it was like helter skelter. I would go

Best Matchups And Nonstop Networking

and watch half of a game, go to the other gym, watch that half, come back, watch a half of a game. We would then go and get lunch, and I had like a basketball conference. It was so I didn't get to really enjoy Vegas. I went to the sphere and saw the Wizard of Oz, which was crazy cool, but that was like the only tourist thing that I got to do. In my head, for some reason, I thought I would have all this time. I was gonna be there for you know four or five days. It was gonna be no problems whatsoever. I was able to meet a couple of scouts and talk to them and a couple of people in management. Everybody was very, very nice. And if you ever had a chance, I would definitely say go. It was a dream of mine to go, and it was well, well worth it. So we're gonna get into the actual players here, and then you know, we're gonna talk about if they were good or bad. So, kind of what stood out to me wasn't just a lottery pick. Summer League is where role players are in contracts, second-round picks force organizations to take notice, and international prospects prove they're ready for the NBA. These were the guys who consistently caught my eye throughout the week. I kind of want to start with Trevan Brazil. He played out of Arkansas. I don't want to say he was like the third banana, you know, but he was obviously not as highly thought of as Malik Thomas or Darius A. Cuff. He was the elder statesman, you know, playing the uh four and five for them. And man, when he got drafted by the Nuggets, I was like, okay, I I love that fit. He gives them something that they desperately need, which is like an athletic rim running big. They they just do not have that on the roster. Aaron Gordon five years ago was that. He is no longer that. And then on paper, you know, Brazil kind of does the things that they need. You know, he's not a bad, let's say, pick and pop guy. He he's not a bad, you know, catch and shoot under certain, you know, uh scenarios. I would do not trust him to take it off the dribble. But if he's a person that is left alone, I I you know he he could possibly hit that three. He's also, you know, six foot ten. Uh, he has a crazy vertical, really good reach. He's a smart player. You know, he stayed, I think he had a couple of injuries, but I think he's 24, if I'm not mistaken. But he just he's looked really good, man. He he he's I know he's averaging like a high number. He's shooting it well, he's shooting it well from three. He's averaging good from you know, rebounding, you know, his I think he's averaging like maybe two or three blocks a game. He had a 32-point game the other night, you know, and we're I think he hit like five or six threes. He's just he's he's looked really great. And I'm excited for him on that team because they desperately need cheap talent that can play above their contract. And I think Brazil will be able to do that for them. Moving on from him, one of my favorite people in the draft that I talked about nonstop, and that was Braden Burries. He ended up like five or six on my board. I just looked at that guy and I was I was like, he's gonna be probably an all-star. Like, you know, he has every single trait you want. I do not understand why he is getting negative buzz because he is good at everything, but he doesn't have this like elite skill. It was so strange to me. He's looked good ever since his first game back in the California classic, I believe. You know, he came in, I think he only had like 12 points in that game, but man, you could see his ability on the ball, which I did not expect him to play as much on the ball as he has. But uh, because I still don't really see him as a point guard. I see him as as like a combo guy. I've always said Devin Booker, you know, I see that in his game. I've always said uh that he looks maybe like a better Eric Gordon or a CJ McCollum. And I continue to think that, except with actual good defense. You know, he he's very aggressive, he stays on the hip of his defenders, he's got good reach, so he's able to, you know, recover well. He, you know, hits those passing lanes pretty, you know, fast. You know, he he's a pretty good processor, and he's been hitting, you know, like threes and he's been able to hit from the mid-range. I don't think people thought he could do that. But, you know, I I thought he would. And I'm glad to see that he's been able to show everybody and put them on notice. And now you have all these teams like Dallas that are mad that they didn't take Braden Burries because he looks like this all-star guard. But I I also have you know Rez Johnson on this list. I thought he has been playing very well. But I'll like I'll get to him in a second. Let's move on from Braden to Trey Johnson. I think people kind of forgot that he was on this team, you know, because with them getting AJ, Trey Johnson was taken last year, I think at number six, if I'm not mistaken. And he was this, you know, really great sharp shooting, you know, like you know, good quality wing that was coming out that people thought could be, you know, a stud. He wasn't super great as a rookie, but he still showed some moments and he has been killing it in summer league. You know, he's just what's funny is AJ's getting all the headlines, but Trey's getting all the stats. Like he's the one that is like shooting the shit out of the ball, excuse my language. He's he's getting he's he's playing good on it, he's playing good off of it, and just looks like a guy that you know is is gonna need real time, which is gonna be really tricky based on the current roster. Moved on from him, you have another guy in his second year, and that is Edgar Demon from Brooklyn. I am a person that really thought their draft last year was really bad. But Demon was the only one that I thought could become an actual rotationary piece, but he looks to be more than that. The other guys all look pretty bad. But you know, Demon looks like a guy that actually might be, you know, like a pretty good starter and not just an okay rotation guy. In the first year, he really only was able to shoot threes and pass, but he's looked to have gained a little bit of weight. He's doing a better job at getting in the paint. You know, he he's just in just in general, he looks more physically prepared than he has been. And not only that, but he's doing a good job with his pacing in terms of getting his teammates into spots and himself into a spot. So I'm I'm excited to see how he's gonna look this year and exactly how Brooklyn's gonna play this. I had brought up Morez Johnson a little bit. He has looked very good, man, especially on defense. He he's getting blocks, he's getting steals, he you know, he's rebounding the ball, he's scoring pretty well. He's not shooting well from three. I didn't really expect that he would, but in general, he's his run projection, it looks to have translated immediately, which I thought it would. I believe he had like 27 in one of his first games. He looks like a really good rebounder, and he just he shows the motor that I knew was gonna be here. So I I know that Dallas fans don't think you know he's as as you know, quote unquote sexy as Braden Burries, but those are the guys you need on your team that are the ones that help you push higher, right? You know, the guards, I'm gonna say it like those are easier to find. You know, it's hard to find guys that are six foot nine, six foot ten, and do everything, right? You know, so

Prospects Who Boost Their Stock

Merez is is more more rare than a Burris is gonna be, even though I I love Burries. I think, you know, getting Bryce Johnson and the fact the guy they got at 26, which I'll get into in a second, you know, makes it okay, right? Another second-year player, come on, Malmotch from the Phoenix Suns. We went and watched him versus Portland with Hansen Yang. And Malomwatch, man, he looked like this bigger than life person. He he's you know, jumping around, getting rebounds, getting blocks. I just do not want him on the ball. He tried to handle it a couple times on the break, and he looked like your grandfather trying to do moves in driveway. He was just pounding it with one hand, he was losing it left and right. I don't need him doing that. It was it was crazy. You know, just stick to a guy in the corner on that catch and shoot three, stick in the dunker spots or or in that pick and roll dive. He does not need to be on the ball in any type of way, but he was running the floor really well. You know, he was he's his physicality was was just evident in the game. It was crazy. And, you know, he his his shooting looks you know a little bit more real. Uh, you know, it's which is really strange. His hands are so damn big. When he was shooting free throws, it reminded me of Shaq, you know, to where he he's he looked like a tennis ball almost. So I think that sooner rather than later, he should be able to give them actual good minutes. Uh moving on to another big man, and that was Yuan Baranjack. I watched a couple of his games, and I almost put Zion Porn on this list, but you know, he he played in Memphis and he's just kind of you know doing that thing. So you know he looks fine, but I thought that Yuan looked more like the person that I needed to talk about. One, he looks bigger, he looks like he's gained some weight, he looks to be more physical, which is great because you know he kind of said he was averse last year, but he didn't really go go into the contact. Now, like he looks to be, you know, welcome it to a certain degree. You know, he looks to be able to switch on to you know all types of uh players now and not just you know like other bigs, and and he looks further along on the defensive edge, man. So all that is really good. I think that Minnesota's really gonna need him to kind of step up here after they lost Julius Randle and Nas Reed. So I'm I'm excited to see what he's able to do once the actual season starts. Players that I liked that was a rookie, excuse me, that was Bruce Thornton out of Ohio State, man. I was such a fan of this guy's game. He's a little bit older, he's shorter, but he was just awesome at everything. And you couldn't really explain why. It was so crazy. Like you watch him play and you're like, how is this guy scoring how he's scoring? Because it looks like you know, he looks like he's going at one speed, and you should be able to just like you know take the ball from him, but he's got like a pretty good reach. And then he would drive in the lane. You'd think you'd be able to just like bump him off his spot, but he's like 225 pounds of muscle, so he can't do that. He goes up for these with these weird like floaters, but he times it so well that you know he's able to wait out all the guys trying to try to block the shot. He was hitting shot from the three, he's able to, you know, make plays. It's just that like he's been such a good piece for Houston right now in the summer league. And I'm excited for him. I was excited for him going into the season. I think he will he's gonna be a really great backup. And I said it when he got drafted, I he's gonna take Reed Shepard's job. And I don't think there's nothing that's happened here that makes me think anything other than that. Another second-year player, Will Riley, man. I watched uh two of his games and actually sat next to a scout for one of them that works for the Wizards, man. And like we just talked, and like like while we're talking, Will Riley is just hitting threes. He he's breaking people up down on the dribble, he's getting rebounds, he's just doing it all. He was such a great find by them last year in the draft. And you know, his timeline, if it's if it's kind of like, you know, moved up here, man, that would be like just a great another piece for them, you know, with him and Trey Johnson, you know, being awesome, and then he's throwing AJ and then Trey Young and then you know uh Aksar, Anthony Davis. It's just it could be a lot of fun there in Washington. Uh moving on from that, I have to talk about you know, Malik Thomas. He's he's been lighting it up, you know, for the Cavaliers. Everybody's mad that their team didn't take him. Just you know, like he's one of those guys, you kind of just need to like kind of pump the brakes a little bit. Guards in general look better in summer league. It is it's kind of like AAU where the guards dominate the ball and they look to score first and second and then pass only if they get double teamed. And that's kind of what happened here with Malik. He is shooting the ball very well. You know, he is doing things that we didn't see at Arkansas. You know, he's doing better at actually getting to the rim, which you know he just didn't really do at all while in college. So all that is is really great, you know, and he's he's uh he's also been hitting some shots that were a little difficult, but it's hard to say if this is gonna be anything at all, you know, considering once we get to the actual season, I don't think he gets any playing time. You know, if he does, yeah, I mean because he's gonna be behind, you know, Tyson as well, and then just other players there. So I I think that that's one that we know he he's looked great, but let's just you know, kind of temper expectations. Uh, also want to talk about Jalen Sellers. I watched a couple games with them, with him and the Bulls. Man, he looks awesome. He he's a player that I I would be totally okay with Memphis picking up. You know, he's around like six foot three or so, you know, just like a super strong build. You know, he's he's athletic and he's hitting shots. He's man playing some some awesome defense. He reminds me of Javon Small to a certain degree, where he just gets in that person's jersey and he is so pumped after every play. He reminds me of the old guy at the just playing outside on the courts with all the young kids, and he's taking everything too seriously. And so you're just like, you're just like, hey man, chill, dude. Like he was pumped after every foul call, after every shot, after every you know, every layup. You know, he's just man, he was just ready to go every play. So he's been really, really fun. I'm hoping that the Bulls bring him on. I think he will be a fan favorite. And I kind of alluded to this guy earlier, Sergio De la Reya from Spain, Valencia, man. So I unfortunately I only got to watch one game of his and then a couple of like highlights and some scoring breakdowns. And the way that they do their stats, I don't have access to all this stuff to put into my model. So every international player has this like incomplete uh score, kind of. I ended up putting him, I think, at 28 on my on my list. And so he goes 26, which is right around where I had him. And now I'm like, man, like after watching him for like in two or three games, I probably should have had him higher. You know, just he honestly reminds me, this is gonna sound really, really silly. He reminds me of Lamello Ball, if he was not a crazy person. Like, you know, like Sergio, he's six foot six, six foot nine or six foot ten wingspan, you know, over 200 pounds. He can shoot the three and pass the rock, man. And that is what Lamello was doing around that age at at like in 19 as well. Except he's not taking 40 foot fadeaway threes. He's not running people over in his car. So, you know, Sergio, I think, could be, man, just like a really cool find for Dallas in terms of a person who is able to just, you know, get the ball to everybody. Game against Memphis. Sergio's the reason why the Mavs didn't lose by 20. Like, I cannot emphasize that enough. That that man, the way that he was able to pick apart the Grizzlies' defense with his passing, where he was able to draw in people because he's he because he's so big, and then he was just seamlessly able to throw these no-look passes behind the defense on the sides, behind him, hit threes. Like, man, it was so, so fun to watch. So I think him and Cooper and Morez is this really cool trio that they already have. And and then I'm excited to see what else that they're able to add there. Now let's flip things around.

Red Flags And Underwhelming Showings

Summer League isn't about writing players off, but there were a handful of prospects I expected more from, whether it was efficiency, decision making, or simply asserting themselves, I guess, this level of competition. These are the guys who left me wanting to see more before training camp. I think we have to start with Drake Powell. I was not a fan of him coming out of UNC. This is another one of the Nets picks. I just, you know, he was kind of like pushed as his 3nd D guy, but like he can't shoot threes. So I was like, that's really strange. He was such a weird prospect, you know, he was kind of undersized as well. So, but you know, his shot is just is not been good whatsoever. You know, he's still able to defend, you know, which he did in college, but you would like him to see, you know, to maybe attack the closeouts a little bit more confidently. Um he's kind of just like settling a little bit, you know, but his defense has remained a positive. You know, the the offense is just is nowhere near where you need it to be. Darius Acuff might be the biggest name on this list. The score efficiency has been very inconsistent. He's forcing shots, he's turning the ball over, which I like. I have a a film breakdown uh from his second game, I think against the Bucks, and turnovers were a pretty bad issue in that one. His defensive concerns are st are still there. It's really just his his off-ball stuff. Like when he's on ball, he seems to play where he doesn't want to get embarrassed. So so he he he plays hard there. But when it's off ball, man, he seemed to just just stop playing kind of. It's very, very strange. You know, he's obviously talented, but his decision making, I think, has been the most disappointing thing because that was the one thing that was touted so highly as well. Was that, you know, he's this guy with this like crazy assist to turnover ratio, his assist rate is awesome, you know, he's shooting from three. And I I always expected his three to regress, but not this much. It's it's kind of you know a little strange, but maybe once they get to camp and the offensive running, man, is so generically bad. I'm hoping that when the real season starts, they're not running 45 highball screens every single game because it's it's it's not great. The next one kind of hurts, and that is Dalen Swain. He is just not hitting shots. I mean, whatsoever. He's not really able to create offense. Uh he kind of looks a little sped up. His defensive tools, you know, are there, and and there's moments where you know you you really see that, you know, he kind of looks like he did at Xavier. But the offense is just, it's you know, it's gonna take time. You know, this is something that I I talked about where he's much better on the ball, but I don't think he's gonna get to really play on the ball. So they're trying to play him off of it, which he wasn't very good at. And if that was their goal there, then I kind of agree with Bulls fans. It's like, why why don't you just take Cameron Carr if you're wanting to somebody that that can just catch the ball? Dunk, hit threes, and block shots, right? I mean, Kamra Carr is your guy. But if you're wanting Swain to be like awesome and be Swain, like he ha I don't see he has to be your point guard, but he needs to be the guy that's going to be setting the table. And I just I don't feel like Tiaga's really doing that with him so far, but hopefully he gets better. I was a fan of Swain, and obviously Summer League, you know, it's not the uh the the last chapter in these players' you know lives or anything, but you know, hopefully during the actual season it looks better. Christian Anderson, person that I have said multiple times I thought would be the best shooter, is just not shooting well. It's I might we kind of assumed he would have issues getting to the lane. That was something that he had issues with in college. You know, he's not very big or strong. So, you know, he's not really able to kind of get into defenses. So he's he's kind of taking these really tough shots on the wings, which you know it's is hard, man, because he's not very big either. So I'm wondering if maybe when he gets with you know a more sustained group and there's more consistency, if if the if the coaching staff can work with him in training camp and for him to get to his spots better. But so far it's it's hasn't looked great, but you know, hopefully they can you know kind of come to some kind of you know tactic that can let him you know look better. Now I will say Hannes Steiback has looked pretty damn good. I was a guy that I was I was very you know uh pumped about. You know, it's hard for for Biggs to kind of show out, but you know, he he's done very well. And he's had a couple games that were, you know, very very eye-popening, excuse me, eye-opening. So uh that one is fun. I'm I'm wondering how he's gonna fit in. I'm gonna go into Ace and Newell. I I really thought, you know, coming into his second year that he was gonna come in here and just really make the Hawks have to come to a decision that he needs playing time. And instead, he just man, he's just not really playing that well. You know, he's he's not impacting games. I mean, if if if I didn't tell you that that a certain player was Ace and Newell, you wouldn't even know that he was out there. He he's getting more more you know dominated physically, trying to trying to play inside more. His offensive game still looks really raw. So, but he's still young, and you know, so but it just doesn't bode well because there's so much depth on this team now, especially with them adding Zubi Egifor. You know, I'm just wondering where he fits now. Up next is a Daimara. You know, he's looked good and bad. Uh like I'll say that, right? And like I don't want to say bad. He's just he at times he looks timid, and then other times he looks like a forceful big. And in those moments, he looks really good. But he doesn't always do that. It's very strange. You know, he he does look a little slow to certain plays and certain actions, you know, he looks a little behind. You know, his uh his free throw, we we knew that that wasn't gonna be good and hasn't been. He's you know not so fast on the break, which we also knew was gonna be a thing. And he looks to be getting like gassed here and there, but he's not gonna be asked to play this many minutes, you know, during the actual season. And I'd be I'd be shocked if he gets a heavy dose of minutes at all. But you know, he's still young, and I think going into that system with you know Hartenstein and and Chet Holgrum, I I fully bet that once he hits camp, they'll be able to like really work with him. It just hasn't looked consistent so far, which is you know kind of left me more or less disappointed. Kobe Brea with the Suns, man. I was really high on this guy last year, and I was like, man, the the Suns got this guy that it's so awesome. And man, he's just he's not shooting well. It's so strange. You know, he was such a good, you know, in college, man, he was such a killer from outside, and he's just not making threes. And when he's not making threes, he's just not doing anything else. So hopefully this is maybe just like a bad, a bad like like spurt here, you know, a bad little few games, but it's just not looking good. And you know, with Koet Pete looking pretty good and Malowitz looking pretty good and Rashir Fleming looking pretty good. I don't want to say that it's system-based in the team because other people are finding ways to be successful. He's still young, which which I'm gonna say a lot, and uh maybe when he gets back there, the training camp, you know, he can find his way, especially with them, you know, moving off of certain players. You know, there might be some some guard minutes there, but playing like this, he's not really gonna get a fast look. The next one is a little bit 50-50. It's it's Alice Caravan. His first couple games were not very good. He was kind of coming back from an ankle injury, and he looked pretty terrible in the first two games, but he did hit, I think, like four or five threes in the third game. So at least you know he he's doing a little bit of what people thought he could do. So, you know, like I'm gonna track that going forward because I was a a big, big caravan fade guy. So, you know, I I don't want that to be like a personal thing, you know, towards you know, as the show goes along, I'm as always anti-Karavan, but we're just gonna watch that as how

it goes. All right, guys, we're kind of done with the 2026 draft cycle, uh, you know, with with the summer league stuff. I will be, let's see, probably doing like an off-season recap just in general of of how everybody looks, teams look, things like that. Then I'm gonna be getting into the 2027 draft, probably one prospect at a time. You just like you know, really watching some film and breaking them down. The the qualifiers for the world uh the world cup, the uh world championships for FIBA, they pick up in August. So I'll be watching those games for you know prospects, you know, in there as well, and uh, you know, talking about those games, and then we'll be getting into like my my top five freshmen, my my top sophomores, my my like early you know, draft board, the like international prospects. So and and then by the time I'm doing that stuff, you know, training camps gonna be back. And then during the season, I'll be doing a top 10 rookie watch as well, and just as we track all these players going forward, and it's just gonna be a lot of fun. So be sure to come back so you can just enjoy more basketball talk. And as always, watch more basketball. I've been doing this for 10 years.
