know one of the great privileges of preaching is that, you know, this is a shocker. 00:00:38.159 --> 00:00:43.840 I write the sermon beforehand and get to meditate on God's word throughout the week. thing. 00:01:36.560 --> 00:02:00.799 Now, in John 5, then, with that in mind, what we see then in John 5 is absolutely astounding because what we see is that the Father has found a glory so infinite that if it were like a sponge, we're told for all of eternity he has squeezed this glory, and for all of eternity he has found it dripping. 00:02:03.840 --> 00:02:06.640 That glory is the Son Himself. 00:02:07.840 --> 00:02:19.840 And John 5 is profound because Jesus is going to stand up and really declare that he is that eternal Son, whom the Father has loved and honored and gloried in for all of that he himself is doing. 00:02:51.840 --> 00:03:01.120 Later in John 17, Jesus will pray this to the Father: glorify me in your own presence with the glory I had with you before the world existed. 00:03:01.280 --> 00:03:09.360 For all of eternity, the Father, in the triune relationship of God, has delighted in the Son. 00:03:09.520 --> 00:03:13.680 For all of eternity, past, for all of A wonder of the gospel, then, for you and I, is that Jesus comes to this world and listen to this, he invites you into that love. 00:03:39.680 --> 00:03:42.240 He invites you into that glory. 00:03:42.800 --> 00:03:51.919 He invites you from the things that you are pouring your affection and attention to in this world that are rusting, that will be gone in the blink of an eye. 00:03:52.000 us are here with this idea that Christianity, you know, it's definitely something you need, but it's not really something you want. 00:04:28.959 --> 00:04:34.319 And if we're honest with ourselves, them to God. 00:04:54.720 --> 00:04:58.800 They loved religion because of how of how it made them feel. 00:04:58.959 --> 00:05:21.199 But what we just read of, if you were with us last week in John 5 and the healing of the man at the pool of Bethesda, was that this religion, this glory in such a lesser thing, caused them to miss the astounding healing power of Jesus to cause this invalid man who invitation that Jesus gave to the Samaritan woman that she did receive, that there is a well so deep that you can drink from it for all of eternity and be satisfied and never see the bottom of it. what's happening in the sermon is it's a little bit like a social experiment I've been running lately. 00:09:41.759 --> 00:09:48.799 Many of you know, about two years ago I started golfing, and many Now I've offended pickleball players and golf players, and that is my point. 00:10:20.320 --> 00:10:29.759 However, I've been telling people I'm gonna quit golf, and one of the amazing things is to tell these golfers I'm gonna quit golf, and to hear the plea as to why golf is the most amazing sport in the world. 00:10:29.840 --> 00:10:44.480 And that's sort of like what the sermon is, but but it's the father speaking, and so we need to listen up, speaking about his son, and Jesus is telling us about the glory that the Father has had in him for all of eternity. 00:10:46.320 --> 00:10:51.120 And so listen, John 4, Jesus calls us to drink everlasting water. 00:10:51.360 --> 00:11:02.559 The beginning of John 5, Jesus shows us why the Pharisees missed it, and here he wants us to convince us of his glory, of his worthiness to be honored and to be sought, seek Jesus. 00:11:02.799 --> 00:11:05.519 Let's just read it together, John chapter 5. 00:11:06.960 --> 00:11:09.440 Let's begin at verse 16 for context. 00:11:09.759 --> 00:11:25.600 In fact, as we read God's word, would you stand with me and we recognize this is not the word of man, but this is the very word of God, and a truly spectacular word at that. 00:11:26.000 --> 00:11:27.519 John chapter 5, verse 16. 00:11:27.600 --> 00:11:32.639 And this was why the Jews were persecuting Jesus because he was doing these things on the Sabbath. 00:11:33.519 --> 00:11:38.559 Jesus answered them, My father is working until now, and I am working. 00:11:39.039 --> 00:11:48.399 This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own father, making himself equal with God. 00:11:49.039 --> 00:11:57.600 So Jesus said to them, Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of his own accord, but only what he sees the Father doing. 00:11:57.919 --> 00:12:01.440 For whatever the Father does, that the Son does likewise. 00:12:01.919 --> revealed to us because of your Son Jesus Christ, who is God. 00:13:36.159 --> 00:13:45.759 And God, even as we meet together here this morning, I'm reminded of the continued work of your son to reveal you, Lord, have revealed yourself to us. 00:13:56.799 --> 00:14:06.159 God, that you have invited us into this eternal glory that you have delighted in for all of eternity past with no beginning to it's because he shows us the heart of God. 00:14:45.840 --> 00:15:07.039 Now, this passage really begins at the beginning of chapter 5, where Jesus there heals a man at the pool of Bethesda who had been an invalid for 38 years, but worse than his crippling physical condition was his spiritual condition. 00:15:07.679 --> 00:15:16.399 This man was caught in a system of maybe a blend between Pharisaical religion and mysticism. 00:15:16.639 --> 00:15:35.360 And so powerful was that system of religion he was caught in that even when Jesus, the Son of God, stood before him and healed him, and his 38-year disease had been healed, and he was walking and carrying his mat, he immediately turned his back on Jesus and went back to his religious system. 00:15:38.480 --> 00:15:48.799 So deep were the Pharisees in this system of religion, this damning system, that they could not see past the fact that Jesus had just performed this profound miracle. 00:15:48.960 --> 00:15:54.559 They were caught up with questions of how Jesus could break their man-made law. 00:15:55.200 --> 00:16:07.200 Now, in verse 16, we're told, you can put your eyes on the text there, we're told there that this is why Jesus was, the Jews were persecuting Jesus, but notice that in verse 17, Jesus answered them. 00:16:07.360 --> 00:16:11.440 Now, in the original language, the weight of this is not just like a question and answer. 00:16:11.519 --> 00:16:12.799 You know, I ask you, how are you? 00:16:12.960 --> 00:16:14.159 and you say, good. 00:16:14.799 --> 00:16:19.039 The weight of this is actually like a defense that is given in a courtroom. 00:16:19.279 --> 00:16:20.799 And really, this is what's going on. 00:16:20.879 --> 00:16:26.080 This really is the beginning of a defense that will end on the cross. 00:16:26.879 --> 00:16:28.720 Jesus is on trial. 00:16:29.039 --> 00:16:39.679 And the reason he's on trial is because the Pharisees understood the implications of his word when he said in verse 17, My Father is working until now, and I am working. 00:16:39.919 --> 00:16:43.360 They knew that that claim was heretical. 00:16:43.759 --> 00:16:46.639 Now, what Jesus does then is defend that claim. 00:16:46.879 --> 00:16:55.039 Jesus is gonna make this astounding claim that he is God, and when questioned, he is very comfortable to give an answer. 00:16:55.200 --> 00:16:56.559 Now, this is really important for us. 00:16:56.720 --> 00:17:02.320 We can draw something out of this that Christianity is a worldview that is willing to be tested. 00:17:02.480 --> 00:17:07.920 When Jesus is asked a question by the Pharisees, he answers them, he gives a response, he gives a rebuttal. 00:17:08.079 --> 00:17:11.119 He doesn't cross his arms and say, hey, listen, don't ask questions. 00:17:11.519 --> 00:17:22.400 Now, you know, I've heard time and time again of people who have grown up in the church, and when they begin to question their faith and start to compare the Christian worldview to other worldviews, that they're told, hey, listen, just have faith. 00:17:23.039 --> 00:17:26.880 And it's interesting here that Jesus' response isn't just have faith. 00:17:27.039 --> 00:17:31.440 In fact, with the Pharisees, he wades into the depths of theological understanding. 00:17:31.599 --> 00:17:36.799 Listen, the Christian worldview is a worldview that you are free to test. 00:17:36.960 --> 00:17:38.319 In fact, Paul did it. 00:17:38.559 --> 00:17:39.839 His whole life, Paul did it. 00:17:40.000 --> 00:17:44.319 Paul said that if you could prove that Jesus wasn't resurrected, then we are all just fools here. 00:17:44.400 --> 00:17:45.759 And so he said, give the proof. 00:17:45.839 --> 00:17:58.720 You know what the problem is, is that when you approach Christianity with intellectual honesty, what you will find then is that the claims of Jesus have all the evidence to support that they really are true. 00:17:59.759 --> 00:18:03.200 And that's what it means to be a Christian is to believe the evidence. 00:18:05.759 --> 00:18:20.960 Now, nowhere is this clearer than in this passage, Jesus is making a radical claim here, a number of radical claims, that just as the Father is worshipped, so too should the Son be worshipped. 00:18:21.119 --> 00:18:30.079 Now, what we have to do, as many of us have probably heard, you know, ten sermons, even on John 5, that are probably even better than this one. 00:18:30.400 --> 00:18:40.000 What many of us have to do is kind of take off our Christian goggles that familiarize ourselves with what is happening here and understand the historical context of what is happening. 00:18:40.240 --> 00:18:43.599 Jesus is a historical man, flesh and blood. 00:18:43.839 --> 00:18:45.359 This isn't fairy tale. 00:18:45.519 --> 00:18:56.559 This is a man who walked on the face of this earth and he's amassing a great crowd, and then he says something pretty radical if you take it for what it's what it means. 00:18:56.720 --> 00:18:58.880 He says, Essentially, I am God. 00:19:01.359 --> 00:19:06.640 Now, could you imagine a politician today saying that? 00:19:07.039 --> 00:19:10.480 Many of us nod our heads because politics is a pretty crazy landscape. 00:19:10.559 --> 00:19:12.880 Like you could you could imagine it for sure. 00:19:13.200 --> 00:19:17.519 But what you could also imagine is the fallout that would come from someone saying that. 00:19:17.680 --> 00:19:18.960 Listen, are you crazy? 00:19:19.279 --> 00:19:20.319 You think you're God? 00:19:20.640 --> 00:19:23.039 You think you should be worshipped like the Father? 00:19:23.519 --> 00:19:29.519 Imagine like a thinker or a podcaster or anyone going on a platform and saying, I am God. 00:19:29.839 --> 00:19:34.240 What would need to happen is that claim would need to be tested. 00:19:34.319 --> 00:19:36.400 And Jesus says this test it. 00:19:38.000 --> 00:19:39.599 He comes boldly and makes the claim. 00:19:39.759 --> important for you. 00:19:46.480 --> 00:19:57.920 If you're a Christian and you're sharing the gospel, this is incredibly important for you to put this in your pocket as a tool for you as you are sharing the gospel, especially with people of other religions and worldviews. 00:19:58.000 --> 00:20:04.000 There are many who take issue with the fact that Jesus never is quoted saying these words, I am God. 00:20:04.160 --> 00:20:08.640 There are many in the Muslim faith who will say, you know, well, Jesus never claimed to be God himself. 00:20:08.799 --> 00:20:14.799 There are many cults who do not believe in the deity of Jesus Christ as God, who will point this out. 00:20:14.960 --> 00:20:17.839 Jesus never said these words. 00:20:21.839 --> 00:20:27.519 I don't think Jesus needs to use the words that we expect for his meaning to be unmistakable. 00:20:27.759 --> 00:20:34.400 What's unmistakable here is that the Jews, the one who truly knew God, knew exactly what was going on.
