00:02:09.439 --> 00:02:10.240 It is powerful. 00:02:10.319 --> 00:02:12.960 It's a powerful thing to be overwhelmed. 00:02:13.120 --> 00:02:13.599 It really is. 00:02:13.759 --> 00:02:17.919 One way or the other, we've experienced both of those things. 00:02:18.080 --> 00:02:30.639 Now, if you think about it, I think overwhelmed is a good word to use and to consider as we think about the attribute of God that we're gonna be looking at here today, uh, which is his holiness. 00:02:30.800 --> 00:02:33.120 Okay, we're looking at how God is holy. 00:02:33.439 --> 00:02:40.400 You and I, we can get overwhelmed, people can get overwhelmed on a on a number of levels when it comes to the fact that God is holy. 00:02:40.479 --> 00:02:44.479 Okay, God's holiness itself is overwhelming. 00:02:44.800 --> 00:03:02.319 Okay, when you start to dig into exactly what that is and what it tells us about our God, it's overwhelmingly dreadful when a sinner is struck by that acute awareness about him, right? 00:03:02.560 --> 00:03:03.759 About God's holiness. 00:03:04.000 --> 00:03:10.560 We often think of that in terms of conviction, where we realize who he is and who we are in light of him. 00:03:10.960 --> 00:03:20.719 On the flip side of that, of course, it's overwhelmingly joyful when a Christ follower catches that fresh glimpse of the holiness of God. 00:03:20.960 --> 00:03:25.680 Okay, all of that really, all of the above, is where we're gonna be going here this morning as we go through this. 00:03:25.759 --> 00:03:34.400 And so here it is, we've been doing through the summer and and through parts of the pandemic anyways, kind of a one-point outline, just one thing we're gonna hammer on, and so here it is today. 00:03:34.639 --> 00:03:38.080 I am astounded as I consider that God is holy. 00:03:38.319 --> 00:03:39.680 I am astounded by this. 00:03:39.840 --> 00:03:44.000 And again, like I said, we're gonna be in Isaiah 6 today, so uh trust that you're there. 00:03:44.080 --> 00:03:46.719 We're gonna be looking at the first seven verses. 00:03:46.879 --> 00:03:54.639 This in many ways is kind of a classic passage when it comes to considering and thinking about this topic of the holiness of God. 00:03:54.800 --> 00:03:58.800 I'm sure many of us have read and studied and looked at this before, but here's what it says. 00:03:58.960 --> 00:04:01.120 Follow along with me, starting in verse 1. 00:04:01.360 --> 00:04:10.159 It says, in the year that King Uzziah died, okay, so just so we get our bearings here, that was the year 740 BC. 00:04:10.560 --> 00:04:14.479 Okay, so 740 years before Christ. 00:04:14.639 --> 00:04:18.560 King Uzziah was the king of Judah at the time. 00:04:18.720 --> 00:04:21.439 He was, for the most part, a good king. 00:04:21.600 --> 00:04:23.759 You know how they just flip-flop back and forth, it seemed. 00:04:23.920 --> 00:04:25.920 Bad king, good king, bad king, good king. 00:04:26.079 --> 00:04:28.639 He was a good king, at least until the very end. 00:04:28.720 --> 00:04:37.519 He stumbled a bit, but his death marked the end of a long period of prosperity for God's people. 00:04:37.920 --> 00:04:51.279 And so what follows here in the rest of this verse and the rest of this passage, even beyond uh what we're gonna look at here today, is really understood as Isaiah's commissioning as a prophet by the Lord. 00:04:51.439 --> 00:04:59.680 Okay, and so it all begins here with this vision that uh Isaiah has of the very throne room of God. 00:05:00.399 --> 00:05:13.519 Okay, so we know that's in the final, or in the year that King Uzziah died, it says, I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of his robe filled the temple. 00:05:13.839 --> 00:05:17.920 Okay, so this is a clear picture of splendor, is it not? 00:05:18.160 --> 00:05:22.319 It's a clear picture of uh of just royalty. 00:05:22.560 --> 00:05:31.120 And if you, you know, you can probably imagine this or you know this, it was always considered like the highest honor ever to be called before a king. 00:05:31.279 --> 00:05:33.439 Okay, to be brought into his presence. 00:05:33.519 --> 00:05:40.079 And you think about this, this is the king of kings, this is the Lord of Lords, and this is the vision that Isaiah has here. 00:05:40.240 --> 00:05:43.600 This is what he's seeing, and it continues in verse 2. 00:05:43.680 --> 00:05:44.480 He's describing it. 00:05:44.639 --> 00:05:50.240 He says, Above him, above the Lord, stood the Seraphim or Seraphim. 00:05:50.800 --> 00:05:52.720 Okay now, now what are they? 00:05:52.879 --> 00:05:56.480 Well, well, literally, the the word seraphim there means flames. 00:05:56.879 --> 00:05:58.000 Okay, it means flames. 00:05:58.079 --> 00:06:06.480 So, so seraphim are clearly some kind of fiery angelic beings of of some sorts. 00:06:06.720 --> 00:06:21.519 Okay, in impressive to say the least, I think, but but just notice the the posture and the demeanor before God as it describes them, that they have. 00:06:21.839 --> 00:06:25.279 Okay, first it says, each had six wings. 00:06:25.360 --> 00:06:30.720 Okay, with two he covered his face, and with two he covered his feet. 00:06:30.959 --> 00:06:35.519 Okay, so this is a portrayal, understand, of utter humility. 00:06:36.160 --> 00:06:39.680 They're covering their feet, they're covering their face, they're shielding themselves. 00:06:39.839 --> 00:06:45.199 It's this, it's this I am, I am not worthy in the presence of the Lord. 00:06:45.360 --> 00:06:47.279 That is how they understand it. 00:06:47.439 --> 00:06:49.680 That is how we're to understand it. 00:06:50.959 --> 00:06:53.759 Okay, and then it says this, though, it continues in the description. 00:06:53.920 --> 00:06:58.959 They have we've already seen the two wings to cover the face, two to cover the feet, and then it says, and with two he flew. 00:06:59.040 --> 00:06:59.839 So six wings. 00:07:00.399 --> 00:07:08.879 Verse three, it says, and one called to another and said, Holy, holy, holy is the Lord of hosts. 00:07:09.360 --> 00:07:12.639 The whole earth is full of his glory. 00:07:13.519 --> 00:07:18.879 Now that that word holy there is clearly the key of what we're talking about here today. 00:07:19.360 --> 00:07:23.759 And and really, in terms of definition, it means separate. 00:07:24.000 --> 00:07:26.560 Okay, it means separate or or set apart. 00:07:27.360 --> 00:07:32.240 When used of God, it it's it's it's referring to his perfection in every sense of the word. 00:07:32.560 --> 00:07:38.240 He's unblemished, it's it's pure righteousness and power and awesomeness. 00:07:38.480 --> 00:07:44.879 Okay, it's it's used to describe what God's nature, divine nature, is. 00:07:45.600 --> 00:07:48.959 Okay, here's what uh John MacArthur says about it. 00:07:49.040 --> 00:07:51.120 He says this, we've got it on the screen. 00:07:51.279 --> 00:08:02.160 Of all the attributes of God, holiness is the one that most uniquely describes him, and in reality is a summation of all his other attributes. 00:08:02.319 --> 00:08:06.720 So he is perfectly holy in every other attribute that we've discussed this summer. 00:08:07.279 --> 00:08:14.720 The word holiness refers to, again, his separateness, his otherness, the fact that he is unlike any other being. 00:08:15.120 --> 00:08:19.680 It indicates his complete and infinite perfection. 00:08:20.240 --> 00:08:26.079 Holiness is the attribute of God that binds all others together. 00:08:26.720 --> 00:08:36.720 Okay, so obviously, here this word, this word holy is an extremely important one that we need to understand when we think about who our God is. 00:08:37.759 --> 00:08:40.879 Again, if you think about it, back to the to the seraphim, right? 00:08:40.960 --> 00:08:54.799 These beings, that they're these exotic otherworldly beings, again, that could have used many different words to describe or to respond to what they were experiencing there in the throne room, right? 00:08:54.879 --> 00:09:07.440 They could have used impressive, they could have said amazing or incredible or awesome, any of those words, and they're all good words, but instead, what they are most struck by is the pristine holiness of God. 00:09:08.080 --> 00:09:15.039 Okay, and keep in mind this: they themselves are wildly impressive creatures. 00:09:15.440 --> 00:09:18.480 And yet they're not caught up in that whatsoever. 00:09:18.879 --> 00:09:21.759 They're not thinking about themselves at all. 00:09:22.080 --> 00:09:24.639 Their instinct, again, is to cover themselves up, right? 00:09:24.720 --> 00:09:27.120 To cover up their unworthiness. 00:09:27.840 --> 00:09:39.519 As incredible as seraphim are from even this description, uh, they're they're they're just nothing compared to the perfection and the holiness of the Lord God. 00:09:40.399 --> 00:09:50.080 Okay, they're like, they're like, we might, we might literally be these raging, forest fire-like, celestial super creatures. 00:09:50.240 --> 00:09:51.519 Okay, that's what they are. 00:09:51.679 --> 00:09:57.840 Okay, that frankly, if you and I saw one of them, we would, we would be terrified. 00:09:58.000 --> 00:09:58.320 Right? 00:09:58.399 --> 00:10:03.039 We would just, we would break down emotionally and physically in front of them. 00:10:03.279 --> 00:10:09.759 Okay, anytime somebody in the scriptures, somebody saw an angel, you think about the the shepherds in the field at night, right? 00:10:20.879 --> 00:10:24.720 These guys, these guys are something else uh entirely. 00:10:24.960 --> 00:10:27.120 Okay, but but they know, right? 00:10:27.279 --> 00:10:35.840 They know that that none of what we are, okay, holds a candle to the white hot holiness of the Lord. 00:10:36.480 --> 00:10:42.159 As astounding and as impressive as we might be, he is infinitely more so. 00:10:43.279 --> 00:10:56.320 Now, our our understanding of all of this is intended to lead you and I to this, to like an overwhelming sense of sacred reverence, right? 00:11:39.120 --> 00:11:46.879 It's meant to thrust or or punch home the epicness of that thing that it's that it's saying. 00:11:47.120 --> 00:11:51.519 Okay, that these beings say holy, holy, holy, three times. 00:11:52.399 --> 00:11:54.720 That's not insignificant at all. 00:11:54.960 --> 00:12:00.080 We see something very similar uttered in Revelation chapter four. 00:12:00.240 --> 00:12:01.200 I'll just read it for you. 00:12:01.279 --> 00:12:15.679 It says, In the four living creatures, each of them with six wings, are full of eyes all around and within, and day and night they never cease to say, You got it, holy, holy, holy is the Lord God Almighty, who was and is and is to come. 00:12:16.799 --> 00:12:34.639 In in in both of these passages, they're they're they're communicating, they're stressing that man, words can't even adequately describe or convey just how unique and pure and and awesome you are, God. 00:12:35.279 --> 00:12:40.480 And so what we're gonna do is we'll repeat the best word that we have available to us. 00:12:41.600 --> 00:12:58.720 Now, when when the word of God and the spirit of God strikes a person with the weight of what it means that that he is holy, there are really, I think, two right responses, or two main responses. 00:12:58.799 --> 00:13:07.360 You could argue there are more to this, but two right responses that I want to focus on here today, as we consider the holiness of God, and as that as that hits you, right? 00:13:07.440 --> 00:13:09.360 As you think about that, you can think back in your life. 00:13:09.440 --> 00:13:18.320 Maybe it was this week, maybe it was years ago, where you just came like, whoa, the Lord, wow, he's awesome, majestic in splendor and power and might, he is pure. 00:13:18.639 --> 00:13:23.840 The the response within us, two things, repentance and worship. 00:13:24.159 --> 00:13:25.679 Repentance and worship. 00:13:25.840 --> 00:13:28.159 We see the first one here starting in verse four. 00:13:28.240 --> 00:13:30.480 Again, we're back into Isaiah 6 now. 00:13:30.639 --> 00:13:39.679 Here's what it says, and the foundations of the thresholds shook at the voice of him who called, and the house was filled with smoke. 00:13:39.840 --> 00:13:41.360 I mean, what a scene, right? 00:13:41.600 --> 00:13:42.159 Wild. 00:13:42.320 --> 00:13:48.960 Verse 5 says, and I said, This is Isaiah now saying in response, Woe is me, for I am lost. 00:13:49.200 --> 00:14:00.639 I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips, for my eyes have seen the king, the Lord of hosts. 00:14:00.799 --> 00:14:01.039 Right? 00:14:01.120 --> 00:14:05.360 He's been struck by by that holiness, he's been struck by the splendor. 00:14:05.679 --> 00:14:23.200 When when we have our eyes opened to the the holiness of God, we are we're we're simultaneously throttled by that sickening awareness in our souls that that left to our soul uh ourselves, we're not holy. 00:14:23.519 --> 00:14:23.840 Right? 00:14:24.159 --> 00:14:24.480 We're not. 00:14:24.559 --> 00:14:25.840 Have you been struck by that before? 00:14:26.000 --> 00:14:31.039 Where you realize that we're like I'm unqualified to stand before him. 00:14:31.600 --> 00:14:37.919 In that moment where we're struck by his holiness, we instantly agree with him that we are broken, right? 00:14:38.080 --> 00:14:42.559 That we are in need of repair, and and and I can't do that. 00:14:42.720 --> 00:14:47.519 I need outside help in that to be made right before him. 00:14:48.240 --> 00:14:52.080 Which, awesomely enough, is exactly what God does. 00:14:52.240 --> 00:14:55.200 Just take a look at verse 6 now here with Isaiah. 00:14:55.360 --> 00:15:03.039 It says, Then one of the seraphim flew to me, having in his hand a burning coal that he had taken with tongs from the altar. 00:15:03.360 --> 00:15:12.480 And he touched my mouth and said, Behold, this has touched your lips, your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for. 00:15:18.639 --> 00:15:20.399 Woe is me! Right? 00:15:20.480 --> 00:15:26.639 And it's genuine repentance in that moment, which is then met by God's mercy and forgiveness. 00:15:26.960 --> 00:15:28.000 Incredible. 00:15:28.240 --> 00:15:37.600 Okay, and so you and I now, we have to remember that today, now, it's through Jesus Christ that we receive God's mercy and forgiveness. 00:15:38.639 --> 00:15:47.759 750 some odd plus years after Isaiah had this vision that we're looking at here today, it was Jesus who would come and atone for our sins. 00:15:48.080 --> 00:15:52.639 He absorbed God's righteous wrath, his holy wrath. 00:15:52.879 --> 00:15:55.120 He did that for us on the cross. 00:15:55.679 --> 00:16:01.039 He destroyed the power of sin when he rose in victory from the grave. 00:16:01.360 --> 00:16:25.360 His unblemished record of sinless living and his sacrificial death satisfied the requirements of the law so that you and I, okay, in repentance, through repentance and in faith in him, could stand before the Lord as a people forgiven, as a people made holy ourselves. 00:16:25.919 --> 00:16:27.519 That is what he did. 00:16:28.720 --> 00:16:35.919 This is something that you know as believers, we talk about this a lot, but this is something that we must continually be mindful of. 00:16:36.399 --> 00:16:37.600 And maybe you're wondering why. 00:16:37.679 --> 00:16:40.559 Why do we have to continually be reminded of what you just said? 00:16:40.639 --> 00:16:48.639 Well, well, because our our default setting, okay, because of sin, because we're warped and we're just off because of that, we we've fallen. 00:16:49.200 --> 00:16:52.320 Our default setting now is to forget that God is holy. 00:16:52.559 --> 00:16:55.679 It's to forget what he has done to make us holy. 00:16:56.000 --> 00:17:01.519 And so we become tempted to do things like wallow in shame. 00:17:01.759 --> 00:17:15.200 Like I messed up this week, and I'm guilty, and I'm never gonna get better, and this is the worst, and and I'm terrible, or or maybe for you it's it's legalism, where you try to fix yourself. 00:17:15.440 --> 00:17:20.880 Like you know that you're broken, and so you're gonna try and you know, behave your way out of that conundrum. 00:17:21.119 --> 00:17:32.319 You're gonna try and and do good things and and and hope that that you know gets you closer to God and and makes him love you more or forgive you or or whatever it is. 00:17:33.359 --> 00:17:40.079 Perhaps as a as a Christian, you've been haunted by a verse like 1 Peter 5 uh 1. 00:17:40.319 --> 00:17:41.920 1 Peter 1, 15 and 16. 00:17:42.000 --> 00:17:42.880 I'll read it. 00:17:43.119 --> 00:17:53.359 But as he who is who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, since it is written, you shall be holy, for I am holy. 00:17:53.599 --> 00:17:53.920 Right? 00:17:54.000 --> 00:18:06.000 I I just wonder how many professing Christians you know read that and and feel nothing more than guilt and shame and and despair and and panic over that because they're man, like they're like, Man, I'm not holy. 00:18:06.480 --> 00:18:08.240 I've messed up so many times. 00:18:08.400 --> 00:18:16.720 My you know, my track record is ugly and it's dark and it's and it's bad, and I see that I'm being called to be holy, but I just can't do it. 00:18:18.000 --> 00:18:18.960 Exactly. 00:18:19.759 --> 00:18:20.000 Right?
