own heart and sitting in the counseling room with so many Christians whose desire has been to faithfully follow the Lord, that following Christ usually isn't unclear. 00:02:08.740 --> 00:02:13.859 The give regularly, give sacrificially, and to give joyfully. 00:02:28.019 --> 00:02:36.739 And you find yourself sacrificing something which on the other side of that sacrifice, you wonder what's gonna true of sharing the gospel too, isn't it? 00:02:47.459 --> 00:03:14.419 We're called to be like Jesus, to be soul seekers, to seek, to see the lost saved, and and to preach and share the gospel, and yet we're given no assurance on the other side of that difficult conversation when we call sinners to repentance and share the good news of hope we have in Jesus Christ, we're given no assurance of been something you've been praying for for years and you expected the outcome would come sooner. 00:03:26.179 --> 00:03:34.259 You expected the result would happen with immediacy, and here you are praying faithfully, listening to the command, but not knowing the outcome. 00:03:37.859 --> 00:03:47.299 I think the greatest uncertainty we often struggle with in Christianity is not what should I do, but what will happen when I do it. 00:03:48.019 --> 00:04:00.419 And so so often then we're caught up in sort of this neutral gear where we're waiting for more clarity, asking God for more information, and there's a time and place for that. 00:04:00.579 --> 00:04:28.019 Waiting can certainly be an important biblical principle, and yet I just can't help but to examine my own heart and realize that sometimes the reason we're so hesitant to obedience and so hesitant to faithfulness and so hesitant to do what the scriptures call wisdom, so often the reason that we are so hesitant to do those things is because we don't want clarity, we want a guaranteed outcome. 00:04:29.540 --> 00:04:37.379 Now, Solomon then comes to speak to us in Ecclesiastes chapter 9, 13, and we're gonna cover a lot here. 00:04:37.460 --> 00:04:57.460 We're gonna get to chapter 11, verse 6, and he's what he's doing here is assembling a series of proverbs and sayings that all have this each of these sayings hit the exact same nail that wisdom matters, your choices matter, faithfulness matters, all of it matters. 00:04:57.620 --> 00:05:02.660 It's all very important, but none of it will give you control over your life. 00:05:02.900 --> 00:05:14.740 At the end of the day, God is sovereign, and he has called you to a life of faithfulness, and he has called you to leave the results to him. 00:05:27.379 --> 00:05:28.580 We're gonna read this together. 00:05:28.660 --> 00:05:51.700 I'd ask for you to stand as we do, and I'm gonna read from chapter 9, verse 13 to chapter 11, verse 6, and I want you to notice what seems like a maybe random assortment of wisdom, Proverbs, has the same running theme that God has called us to faithfulness, leaving the results to him. 00:05:52.180 --> 00:05:54.580 Ecclesiastes chapter 9, verse 13. 00:05:55.300 --> 00:06:01.939 I've seen also, I've also seen this example of wisdom under the sun, and it seemed great to me. 00:06:02.180 --> 00:06:10.259 There was a little city with few men in it, and a great king came against it and besieged it, building great siege works against it. 00:06:10.500 --> 00:06:16.900 But there was found in it a poor wise man, and he by his wisdom delivered the city. 00:06:17.140 --> 00:06:19.540 Yet no one remembered that poor man. 00:06:19.860 --> 00:06:26.020 But I say that wisdom is better than God. 00:10:11.300 --> 00:10:15.379 Now, faithfulness in these verses is not vague. 00:10:15.700 --> 00:10:20.500 It's incredibly clear that a faithful life looks like the wise life. 00:10:20.659 --> 00:10:29.060 And so as Solomon then is teaching us what faithfulness looks like, the first thing I want you to see he calls us to do is to be wise. 00:10:29.539 --> 00:10:32.659 Your choices really do matter. 00:10:32.899 --> 00:10:36.820 Be wise, your choices really do matter. 00:10:37.060 --> 00:10:44.820 I want you to notice that what the scriptures call us to is never a fatalism in light of who invited me wrote me a card after, and you know, after preaching to the congregation, I went in the car and read the card, and it said, I know that God, what God did here had nothing to do with you. 00:11:21.379 --> 00:11:28.259 And I thought that's very discouraging to hear after driving all the way out here and preaching my guts out and writing this manuscript. 00:11:28.420 --> 00:11:30.659 And I get what he's saying, though. 00:11:30.740 --> 00:11:34.019 You know, Jesus said, Apart from me, you can do nothing. 00:11:35.460 --> 00:11:46.340 And there is a weakness that we are called to in Scripture, and yet I'm reminded that the Bible doesn't call us to a gospel fatalism, it calls us to a gospel reliance. 00:11:46.659 --> 00:11:53.379 We talked about that a few weeks ago, didn't we, when we talked about the weak that are made strong through the gospel. 00:11:53.620 --> 00:11:57.379 It's not that the instrument is irrelevant, that would be fatalism. 00:11:57.539 --> 00:12:00.659 It's that the instrument is powerless apart from God. 00:12:00.820 --> 00:12:14.259 And as the scriptures talk about wisdom and faithfulness, that same tension is true, that we are called to faithfulness, but just because you are faithful doesn't mean that you are in control. 00:12:14.500 --> 00:12:18.259 This just because you are faithful doesn't mean that you're guaranteed the results. 00:12:18.420 --> 00:12:28.500 And we see that at the beginning of our passage in chapter 9, verse 13, as Solomon tells us about a rich ruler who has many siege works. 00:12:28.580 --> 00:12:39.379 I mean, you you can probably imagine it, you've probably seen enough movies before to imagine a little city and a horde of an army coming against that city. 00:12:39.539 --> 00:12:50.500 And you say, I mean, there is just no way that this city can be delivered from the rich king and all of his siege works, and yet Solomon points us to one thing the city has. 00:12:51.460 --> 00:12:52.899 It is hidden. 00:12:53.300 --> 00:12:55.300 You can't really see it at first. 00:12:55.620 --> 00:13:05.060 It's a poor man that you'd walk by on a street, that you drive by that intersection every time you drive home from work, they stand on the intersection, you just completely miss them. 00:13:05.220 --> 00:13:12.340 Solomon says there there is a man in that city who is poor, who is ignored, but there is a secret weapon. 00:13:13.779 --> 00:13:15.300 That man has wisdom. 00:13:16.180 --> 00:13:18.420 That man has faithfulness. 00:13:19.060 --> 00:13:24.019 And because of the poor man's wisdom, he saves the city. 00:13:24.259 --> 00:13:27.220 Now that is a movie I want to see, isn't it? 00:13:29.060 --> 00:13:31.700 And yes, Solomon, he's calling us here to faithfulness. 00:13:31.860 --> 00:13:34.980 But notice the tension he's keeping us in in verse 16. 00:13:35.139 --> 00:13:38.340 Look down at your copy of God's word. 00:13:38.740 --> 00:13:43.860 00:13:49.940 --> 00:13:52.420 That poor man's wisdom delivered the city. 00:13:52.580 --> 00:13:57.539 Yes, your faithfulness matters, but that poor man's wisdom did not get him any fame. 00:13:57.700 --> 00:13:59.139 It didn't get him any riches. 00:13:59.300 --> 00:14:00.500 Nobody remembered him. 00:14:00.659 --> 00:14:06.019 But Solomon's conclusion is this: but I say that that wisdom is better than might. 00:14:06.740 --> 00:14:08.820 Wisdom is better than might. 00:14:08.980 --> 00:14:15.139 Loved ones, some of us need to hear that this morning because we feel ourselves to be called to very small things. 00:14:15.220 --> 00:14:23.139 And Solomon is here to say, hey, listen, if you're faithful in the small things, you don't need a stage for God to do much in your life. 00:14:23.379 --> 00:14:24.580 And through you. 00:14:24.820 --> 00:14:27.060 The only thing you need is faithfulness. 00:14:27.300 --> 00:14:29.620 You need faithfulness to God. 00:14:29.940 --> 00:14:40.259 Now, if wisdom then can accomplish enormous good, Solomon also wants us to understand the destructive power of a small amount of foolishness and sin. 00:14:40.500 --> 00:14:46.980 Yes, faithfulness in small portions and small people and small callings can accomplish enormous good. 00:14:47.139 --> 00:14:52.019 Foolishness and sin can destroy with like power. 00:14:52.259 --> 00:14:54.180 Look at small little creature in a giant amount of liquid ruins the whole entire thing. 00:15:46.259 --> 00:15:49.139 What is Solomon telling you, loved one? 00:15:49.300 --> 00:15:56.259 Solomon is telling know if any of you guys have these neighbors who their lawn is like perfect and immaculate, and every bush is perfectly trimmed, and the grass is always perfectly cut. 00:16:22.340 --> 00:16:32.740 And I looked out into the farmer's field, and there's a number of weeds growing on the side of the farmer's field, and my neighbor was out in the farmer's field pulling out weeds from this tree. 00:16:32.820 --> 00:16:36.019 And I thought, wow, this I mean, he's really perfected everything in his yard. 00:16:36.100 --> 00:16:39.779 He's got to go and just now he's taming the wilderness in the farmer's field. 00:16:40.180 --> 00:16:41.539 Some of you guys have neighbors like that. 00:16:41.779 --> 00:16:50.180 You're pretty sure you're gonna look out one day, they're gonna be on your lawn, working on your lawn, because your dandelions are, anyways, another sermon we're preaching, aren't we? 00:16:50.420 --> 00:17:03.779 Well, I looked at him and he was pulling these giant vines out of a number of trees, and and I went to see what was going on, and he told me that that in his backyard, he's got this beautiful, huge willow tree. 00:17:03.860 --> 00:17:06.579 It's perfectly maintained, it's incredibly mature. 00:17:06.740 --> 00:17:11.539 And he said, This vine is is crawling up this tree and into his willow tree. 00:17:11.700 --> 00:17:19.140 And you could look at the trees that the vine had already taken over and see like they were dying because this vine was crippling them, these massive trees. 00:17:19.220 --> 00:17:21.140 I mean, I could try to pull on them as hard as I could. 00:17:21.220 --> 00:17:22.500 There's no way I could get them out. 00:17:22.579 --> 00:17:29.620 And yet this small little vine was killing those trees and threatening to take down this huge willow tree. 00:17:29.700 --> 00:17:40.980 Now, I've seen this willow tree in storms, I've seen the thunder come, I've seen the wind blow, and the willow tree is immovable, but this little vine was threatening its life. 00:17:41.220 --> 00:17:51.620 And for hours, me and this neighbor, we we tracked the vine, pulling it out of the trees to the very root where it started just as a tiny little seed. 00:17:52.660 --> 00:18:04.500 And I was reminded of the power of allowing something small to remain until it has deeply rooted into our lives and destroyed everything. 00:18:13.299 --> 00:18:16.259 What bitterness are you holding against another person? 00:18:16.740 --> 00:18:22.019 Saying, well, it's not that big of a deal, and yet every time you see them, there's bitterness thing, but but loved one, if you do not tear it up while it is tiny, it will become a very big thing that can destroy your life. 00:18:39.380 --> 00:18:48.980 What is God calling you to right now that you are delaying obedience, and you know delayed obedience is disobedience, but you're saying, God, it's just now, now is just not the right time. 00:18:50.339 --> 00:18:53.059 These little things Solomon says become big things. 00:18:53.220 --> 00:18:56.339 A little folly destroys much good. 00:18:56.660 --> 00:19:01.779 What Solomon then calls us to is a very ordinary faithfulness. 00:19:01.940 --> 00:19:03.700 This is what wisdom is. 00:19:04.339 --> 00:19:09.620 Wisdom is very rarely lived out in the in the biggest moments of life. 00:19:09.779 --> 00:19:15.220 We often think of our faithfulness and think of our life lived before God in the big grand moments. 00:19:15.299 --> 00:19:28.420 But what scripture often calls us to instead is to think about the little moments, the humdrum of life, the constant small steps of faithfulness that we need to take regularly that lead to a life of godliness and glory. 00:19:28.819 --> 00:19:30.180 It's ordinary wisdom. 00:19:30.339 --> 00:19:37.700 And I want you to see in the in the rest of chapter 10 that Solomon really calls us to wisdom in four different realms of life. 00:19:37.940 --> 00:19:45.539 The first place that he calls us to wisdom in is to be wise in our reactions, to be wise in our reactions. 00:19:47.380 --> 00:19:50.819 Solomon says in verse 4, look at your copy of God's word with me. 00:19:50.980 --> 00:19:59.860 If the anger of the ruler rises against you, do not leave your place, for calmness will lay great offenses to rest. 00:20:01.059 --> 00:20:08.900 Solomon's looking at us this morning and saying, listen, if you want to live faithfully, if you want to live wisely, your reactions matter. 00:20:09.779 --> 00:20:16.339 The way that you react to that thing that your spouse said again when you asked them not to say, it matters. 00:20:16.500 --> 00:20:21.779 The way that you react to your kids when they do that, a completely infuriating thing. 00:20:22.019 --> if I'm gonna live wisely, I may have to leave the results to God and say, God, you got this one. 00:21:03.220 --> 00:21:09.539 There's nothing that I can do in my reaction right now that will contribute to making this situation better. 00:21:10.019 --> 00:21:12.019 And so I'm trusting in you, God. 00:21:13.779 --> 00:21:16.099 What does that practically look like in our life? 00:21:16.900 --> 00:21:33.460 Well, it practically means that to be a wise Christian means often refusing to send that text message when you are angry and instead choosing to have that conversation face to face in love for the person's restoration. 00:21:34.420 --> 00:21:42.420 It means that when you are in that conflict and that conversation, you refuse to walk out on a person just because you are offended by what they said. 00:21:42.579 --> 00:21:44.339 You are fighting for clarity. 00:21:45.940 --> 00:21:53.220 It means that when someone treats you foolishly and sinfully, you refuse to react foolishly
