Hello Bonjour Salam Welcome to the Little Lingless Podcast. Today's story is called The Three Golden Apples. Long ago in the beautiful city of Baghdad, there lived a kind father named Hassan and his little daughter Leila. One morning Layla woke up with a sniffle and a sore throat. I don't feel very well today, she cited. Hassan tucked her blanket around her and kissed her forehead. What would make you feel better, my little star? he asked. Layla thought for a moment. Um I wish I could taste one of the golden apples from the king's garden. Now everyone knew about the golden apples. They were shiny as sunshine, sweet as honey, and rare as a rainbow at midnight. Hassan smiled and said Then I shall find one for you. So off he went. He crossed busy markets filled with colorful rugs. He passed fountains that splashed and sparkled. He asked fruit sellers, travellers and merchants, anyone who might know of such an apple. Leaving the city behind, he travelled for days, walking beside date palms that swayed gently in the breeze, determined to return home with the apple that his daughter desired. At last he reached the king's garden. And there, hanging from a silver tree were three magnificent golden apples that looked like hanging jewels. He approached the gardener with a heavy breath and asked him if he could buy some golden apples for his sick daughter. The gardener listened kindly to Hassan's story and said, The apples are not for sale, but if you're saying the truth, then you may take three apples for your daughter. Hassan thanked him with his eyes full of tears and hurried home with only three fragrant beautiful apples. Layla's eyes sparkled when she saw them. Oh they are beautiful she said as she started counting them. One two three and she gently placed them on a plate under her bed. The next morning, Hassan glanced at the plate. One two only two apples. Where did the third apple go? He wondered. Leila looked surprised. I don't know. Hassan searched the kitchen. No apple. He searched the garden. No apple. He looked under cushions, no apple. Then he heard giggling outside. Across the street, a small boy was bouncing a golden apple in the air. Hello, Hassan called gently. Where did you get that lovely apple? The boy stopped bouncing. Oh, he said, I found it rolling down the road yesterday. Just then, a tiny grey squirrel peeked out from a nearby tree. The squirrel's cheeks were round and full, and tucked beneath the tree were apple seeds. Lots and lots of apple seeds. The squirrel had carried the apple away, nibbled it, and accidentally rolled it down the hill. Everyone laughed. Even the squirrel seemed pleased. Leila laughed the loudest of all. Not far away, a farmer working on his land heard the story and smiled, and a few moments later he returned with a small pouch. Inside were three fresh golden apple seeds. Plant these, he said. Hassan and Leila planted them together. They watered them every day. They sank to them. They waited and waited. Soon tiny green shoots appeared, then leaves, then branches. And one sunny spring morning three golden apples shone among the leaves. One, two, three. Leila clapped her hands with joy as if by magic the little squirrel twitched his nose, making Hassan burst into a bright smile. Because sometimes the best treasures are not the ones we find, they are the ones we grow together. I hope you enjoyed the story in English. Now let's hear it in French.
