Ricky and Brandon review 30+ years of Pixar films and rank them all. There will be laughter, tears, and pure disbelief.

SPEAKER_02

Hello, hello, and welcome to another episode of a Motherly Film Podcast. We are the learners of lessons, the appreciators of animation, and the connoisseurs of children's classics. My name is Brandon, and with me as always is Ricky. Ricky, how are you today?

SPEAKER_01

I'm doing pretty good, Brandon. How are you?

SPEAKER_02

I'm doing quite well. I'm very excited about today's episode. It might be a contentious episode. Although we said the same thing for one of our previous ones, and then we ended up agreeing on literally everything. So who knows? I could be very wrong.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, um. We're bound to piss off many people, no matter what.

SPEAKER_02

Just not each other, because we're we're gonna everything yet again.

SPEAKER_01

The public is going to hate it.

SPEAKER_02

It's it's just that Futurama joke of just like your 3% tax increase doesn't go too far. And I believe your 3% tax increase doesn't go far enough.

SPEAKER_01

That's the clones, right?

SPEAKER_02

Because it's like they they like John Johnson and Josh Johnson.

SPEAKER_01

They agree on everything. Not grate.

SPEAKER_02

So good. Ricky, what is our subject for today? I kind of want to jump right into this one because I think we might have uh quite a lot to talk about.

SPEAKER_01

We are talking about all thirty of the Pixar films. Now, we chose this topic because Toy Story 5 is coming out here in a couple weeks.

SPEAKER_02

Uh yeah, just a couple days.

SPEAKER_01

Like the end of next week, I guess. Next Friday? Yep, I believe so.

SPEAKER_02

The 19th.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Um, so that'll be third 31.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. It's been 30 years of Pixar films. First one debuted in 1995, and they are still going strong, basically putting out a Pixar film. Now it's almost like once a year, I think. I think since 2006, they haven't missed a single year. Yeah, and like technically. Oh yeah, which is crazy. Okay, yeah, it looks like they technically skipped over 2014, but released two in 2015, so my guess was one, maybe just wasn't ready and got pushed back. But before we get into our actual Pixar topic today, which uh for those who are listening, we are going to basically rank and compare every single one of them in a fun little tier list and hopefully uh make each other mad at each other's rankings. We'll see. Uh, but Ricky, I wanted to ask, do you remember your first Pixar movie?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I don't know if I saw Toy Story in theaters. I I think I might have. Um I know I had it on VHS.

SPEAKER_02

Definitely had the VHS.

SPEAKER_01

I'm pretty sure that I saw it in theaters. I don't think I saw two in theaters. So yeah, I mean, I think I was there from the beginning. Um with Toy Story. What about you?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I think I was the same. I definitely did not see either of those in theater. I think the first movie I saw in theaters, Pixar related, was probably Monsters Inc. I think I saw that one in theater.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I definitely saw that one.

SPEAKER_02

But I also had Toy Story on VHS. I watched it so many times to the point where I memorized the movie. I was able to just flat out quote it. Uh, and we'll see if that affects my rankings of it here. Uh, do you feel like there's any real differences aesthetically or narrative-wise from a Pixar movie versus just the normal Disney films?

SPEAKER_01

I was thinking about that. Um like I mean y you know, it's the computer animation versus you know, the the hand-drawn stuff, and I mean they're all com they all ended up, you know, going the computer route.

SPEAKER_02

But um Well, yeah, because even it wasn't Big Hero Six technically just a normal Disney, not Pixar, but it definitely was more in that 3D style, too.

SPEAKER_01

Well, well, I mean, yeah, yeah, eventually like both of them um went the more uh com computer generated like route. Um I don't I know like the um it's kind of weird because like the Apixar guys like John Lasseter and Andrew Stanton, Pete Doctor, all though those guys who were like the there from the beginning. They learned from the old like Disney animators, so it's like kind of weird um that they went more computer when they probably learned the actual hand-drawn cells. Yeah and I don't know, maybe they were like kind of going more adult focused than like Well, I guess they weren't going as musical, maybe, um these Pixar films, like um, because like all the Disney films around that that Oh yeah, that's a really good point. You know, all the musicals and everything, and Alan Minken, you know, having everything to do with them and so maybe that that is one thing, just an alternative.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I think that's a really great way to differentiate because I didn't even think of that, that all of the Disney films that came after, so your Frozen's and Kanta, Moana, even if they have that 3D animation style, those are all more musicals. And I don't think a single Pixar film is technically a musical, but there are some that have very musical elements, um, which we'll we'll talk about quite a bit. But yeah, that's actually a very good point. Good job, Ricky. You big smart.

SPEAKER_01

I did it. See y'all later.

SPEAKER_02

Pat you on your heel. It's all downhill from here. Get ready for 20 more minutes of the dumbest takes you've ever heard. Well, Ricky, then I think we should get started because we've got plenty of movies to go through and talk about. Um, so let's start from the very beginning. Where do you have Toy Story? I guess I should also ask, what are your rankings on your tier list? How did you list?

SPEAKER_01

Um, so I put e elite, uh great, good, and okay.

SPEAKER_02

Okay, so I I started with the goats, the greats, the goods, fine, with an S, S fine, and gross.

SPEAKER_01

Oh wow. Okay.

SPEAKER_02

So I have uh it I think we said off mic that there really aren't a lot of Pixar films that are bad, I would say.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_02

It's just some of the more weaker Pixar films have the unfortunate luck to be compared to the better Pixar films.

SPEAKER_01

That is the the whole thing. Um, it's like, you know. Because like they're they're for so long they didn't have a bad one. They were all like the instant classics. Oh yeah. Um, and then it starts, you know.

SPEAKER_02

Well then let's let's start with that instant classic of the first toy story. Where do you put it, Ricky?

SPEAKER_01

I put it in Elite. Wow, I mean Yeah. Like, I mean, I I don't I don't love it as much as like a lot of the others. But it's like, you know, this is the one i it's more of a respect thing, I guess. I mean this is the one that that started it all. Um you know, just a huge change for animation. Um and like all the characters that are so iconic. Oh yeah. Um, and you know, I mean, if it wasn't a success, we we wouldn't have gotten we we wouldn't be on five right right now.

SPEAKER_02

Um, so it does make me wonder if if the first Toy Story was a bomb and people didn't like it. I mean, I think animated films would still come out eventually, but I think it would have really put things on the back burner to go, hey, I want to make an animated film, and people go, well, Toy Story 1 was awful, so we're not gonna like we're not gonna green light this pick your your animated film. It really did open up the doors for not just Pixar, but for everyone else to make 3D animations.

SPEAKER_01

Yep. Um I feel like Ants was like 981 98, I believe. Because that and Bug's Life came out around the same time. But um uh yeah, I feel like that that is the first one that that comes to mind that computer animated um outside of the Disney umbrella, I guess.

SPEAKER_02

Do you have a favorite line from Toy Story 1? Or just a favorite moment? Gosh. It's tough. There's a lot of good ones. I often just quote, uh look, I'm Woody, howdy, howdy, howdy.

SPEAKER_01

That one is great. Um, I don't know. For for some reason I just keep thinking about Rex. Um Wallace Sean. Like, I don't know. It's something with with Rex, probably. That is my favorite.

SPEAKER_02

I always like when they're flipping through the channel. Or that might actually be uh that might be number two actually. Oh, yep, yeah, two is when they flip through channels. Yeah, we'll touch on that. When I think of Toy Story One, I feel like I have Sid's house burned into my memory because that's where the movie kind of takes somewhat of a creepy turn because he you know tears up all those toys, starts mashing them together, making his own toys. Uh, I believe Buzz has a great line of I don't believe this man has any medical training, which I think is very cute.

SPEAKER_01

Um, my uh favorite might might be um what is like when he starts thinking he's like the the woman or whatever. Oh, Mrs. Nesbit. Yeah. I'm Mrs. Nesbit.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, that he like he just has like a full mental break.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, because he loses like his arm, doesn't he?

SPEAKER_02

Loses his arm, he realizes he's a toy and not actually a space commander. That's it's so good.

SPEAKER_01

Stranger.

SPEAKER_02

I I will I'm gonna this this we're already gonna disagree. I actually put Toy Story in just the greats. I obviously respect it. What if I was like, it's prose, I hate it. The the reason I put it a little lower was because I did re-watch it uh a few months ago, weirdly, it was just on TV or on one of our streaming services and we just threw it on. But re-watching it, the animation outside of the toys is rough. It yeah. It like in my mind's eye, I always thought, oh, it's it ages well, like I can picture it. But then when I try to picture Sid or Andy or Andy's mom, they're always I'm picturing them from the later movies. And so when I go back and watch the first one, it it is gross. Like even the dog spike is just like, oh man, this is a rough animation. And I can't fault it necessarily.

SPEAKER_01

That is like, you know, I think about Snow White. Um, to me, like, Snow White isn't, you know, like the most beautiful, but I mean it's the first one, so it's like, you know, you have to put some some respect on it. Yeah, yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I think as a story, it still is very fun, and I kinda like that it's this it really is just a story about jealousy, like for the most part.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I think it's just a cool topic to tackle for their first movie. They didn't try to go too grandiose and it was just about two people butting heads and kind of kept it a little simple, but uh really quickly, did you ever start feeling guilty about not playing with your toys after watching Toy Story? Uh probably. Oh, I 100% did.

SPEAKER_01

Um, and I probably, you know, like had those thoughts of like, are they alive? Like, oh god, they're watching me do stuff. Yeah. Or or like wanting them to be alive.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh any last thoughts on Toy Story before we move on to the next film?

SPEAKER_01

No, like like I said, I mean, it for for me the up placement is, you know, like it definitely it isn't one that I like re-return to very often, but it's like I just have to ru respect it. Yeah. So I mean, you you putting it in greats, I won't argue at all.

SPEAKER_02

I I try to keep my goats uh to a minimum if I could. I didn't want to have, you know, 10 films all as the goats or whatever.

SPEAKER_01

I did not do that.

SPEAKER_02

Alright, I'm excited. I hope you end up with like 10 or 12 like elite movies. Uh Ricky, A Bug's Life, 1998. Where do you have a Bug's Life?

SPEAKER_01

I believe I have this one in good. I do.

SPEAKER_02

Man. Tell me about it. Why do you have so I have mine in the greats as well. I have it up there in Toy Story as a very, very fun movie. And this one I know for me is a bit more nostalgia too, because I also remember watching this one a bunch as a kid.

SPEAKER_01

I didn't This one is one of the ones that I've seen the at least. Um It's fun. Um there they're like Um some cute bugs in it. Like like I always loved like the fat like caterpillar, like beautiful butterfly. Yeah, yeah. That was always cute. But it's like I I it just never really like clicked with me like like others. Um maybe like subconsciously it was you know my my hatred of bugs. Like that's true.

SPEAKER_00

That is true.

SPEAKER_02

I thought you were gonna say subconsciously your hatred of Kevin Spacey. Like even back then, I knew. Oh yeah, I forgot about that. He plays he plays hot.

SPEAKER_01

You're sick, man. Uh yeah, I I I do remember uh watching it in school though. Um, so that was cool. Like uh one time um we uh we had like a special day or or something in school, so we we got to watch a bug's life and that was really fun.

SPEAKER_02

As it should be. The movie's fun. The the reason I like a Bug's Life is one, Dave Foley, that's awesome, that Dave Foley got to play for it. Really cool. Phyllis Diller is in it, and she plays uh like the the Queen Ant, which is wonderful. I think one thing that stuck out to me about A Bug's Life is that this, more so than Toy Story, was trying to build a world in a way, and I think it it almost felt like a huge, huge, huge precursor to something like um Zootopia in a lot of ways, whereas like this is a working society of people, and I always found that fascinating, even as a kid, that there was you know, we could see classism in a bug's life. That's really cool. I mean, and also ants, as we brought ants up earlier, that movie was all about rebelling against the establishment. And I just think I just liked that. And I I think as a very young kid, it helped to also have a good guy versus bad guy like Hopper is not the most complex character, he's just mean and intimidating and scary, and so it I think as a kid it was pretty easy to follow too.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Yeah, um, I think one of the things that um kind of s sticks out to me with definitely these early Pixars is the supporting cast. It's like the um characters that that they had around. There there's so many like, you know, the supporting characters that are so fun. Um and uh wacky and so yeah, I think that that was a big draw um for for me to the early ones and probably a smart move. Um in their their part, um yeah, I feel like it's and I mean it's colorful, like I re remember parts. I think the part I I think it's this movie where where where it's like don't go into the light, and then it's like but it's so bright, or like that.

SPEAKER_02

I think a Bug's Life is the funny part. I can't remember if the first Toy Story did this, but I know a Bug's Life, Toy Story 2, and I believe Monsters Inc. all did the thing of they created bloopers as if the characters were in a movie. Like you can look them up on YouTube and like you'll see things where like for example, like there'll be like a Seamur Hopper's like intimidating flick, and then like he runs into like the boom mic, and they all like the you know, the grasshopper's laughing, like, oh ha ha ha ha. That was so cool and so unique to see that as a kid that obviously the bloopers aren't real bloopers, they've made fake bloopers, and I just thought that was such a fun choice to do.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I definitely re-re remembered the Monsters Inc. one. I don't think they did it with Toy Story, the first one. Probably did it with the second. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

But speaking with Toy Story 2, where do you have it, Ricky?

SPEAKER_01

Uh this is Elite. This one is uh probably the best spoiler.

SPEAKER_02

Oh man, I'm so happy. Like Toy Story 2 is if if it's not my number one Pixar, it is a close number two.

SPEAKER_01

There's another one that I have in the Oh, I mean just like Toy Toy Stories. Oh, it's it's the best Toy Story. The uh best. But um yeah, it's it's pretty high high up there for for me in general.

SPEAKER_02

What do you love about Toy Story 2?

SPEAKER_01

What's your Um It gets more serious? Um probably even more relatable than the uh first one.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um I I love the whole him being part of a television show. Yeah. Like that is like so so cool. And Jesse's cool. Um Kelsey Grammar's great.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Kelsey Grammar is Stinky Pete. I love Stinky Pete as a character. I think that's really fun. Um and actually speaking of the blooper, Stinky Pete has the great thing where he's like hitting on like Barbie dolls and like doing like a casting couch thing. You go like, yeah, he's like, you know, I I could probably get you into the movie, and you're like, oh wow, I can't believe they put that in here.

SPEAKER_01

Um and uh is it It's Wayne Knight, right?

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Wayne Knight is the collector.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, that that is such a cool thing, and then the whole what do they call that?

SPEAKER_02

Um Like the toy barn.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, but it's like that the that whole um trope, I guess, of like trying to rescue um like they they go on a an adventure to rescue Woody, and it's just that that whole thing is so so cool.

SPEAKER_02

That they actually get to Woody and he says, I don't think I want to go. Like he I don't want to be rescued.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and them just in the the toy shop is awesome.

SPEAKER_02

Toy shop's just a great bit.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I feel like that because we we were able to to grow up with the uh Toys R Us and everything. Right. I just remember having you know being so excited to go there and everything. Oh, like just thinking about it now, there's so much in Toy Story 2. It's like that introduces Zerg, and um, you know, so Zerg gets introduced, you get Jesse and Bullseye with

SPEAKER_02

Which are great additions. My wife still will tell me that she can't watch like the song where Jesse gets thrown away. It always makes her weep. Anytime that part comes up, I just kind of like mute the TV or fast forward a little bit. It is sad.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, there's some. It it's very serious at times.

SPEAKER_02

I think Joan Cusack also crushes it with her bulk voice performance. Where I that's always been a little inkling of mine with a lot of animated films is when they hired, you know, A-list superstars who just talk like themselves, Chris Pratt in the Mario movie. And that is it's such a common and boring option. And so when Joan Cusack for Jesse, she's she's going full on, like, yeah! Like she's she is commanding. She's so in it. She won a hundred, like you could tell everyone else probably was in that booth going, oh, we need to up our fucking game because Joan is out acting the shit out of us right now.

SPEAKER_01

I also love it's like you have the Woody and Jesse. Um like they're they're like a perfect match, I guess, but I love how like you know, he wants to be with uh Bo Peep and Buzz and Jesse, you know, just the opposites attracting thing that is always cool to I'm so glad you have it in the lead.

SPEAKER_02

I could talk about this movie forever, but we gotta keep moving. Uh do you have any other quick thoughts before we move on, though?

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_02

Ricky Monsters Inc. 2001.

SPEAKER_01

This one. Uh so at first I had it in great, but then I bumped it up to elite. So three out of four are elites for yourself. Oh, dude, there there's a lot in elite for for for me.

SPEAKER_02

I also put my monsters ink at the top as well. This is a a prime, prime Pixar film.

SPEAKER_01

This one's very strange, because it's like this one's fairly basic, I guess, but it's just like it's like a warm hug, I guess. Yeah. Yeah, it's just so so much fun from beginning to end. Like, like it doesn't try and do anything crazy or anything. Um, and maybe some of it's n nostalgia too, because I remember seeing it in the at the theaters with my parents, and yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I would argue Monsters Inc. might be the funniest Pixar film. I I crack up during Monsters Inc.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

It's just I the the amount of times I've started singing, put that thing back where it came from, or so help me. Like, I it's so good. It's so clever. Um I think and I think like you said, it's a warm hug. It's I really love the friendship of Mike Wazowski and uh Sully. Like it that's really sweet. Of course, the way that he falls for Boo to try to take care of her is incredibly, incredibly sweet. And again, as I mentioned earlier, I like Bug's Life because it kind of builds that world. Monsters Inc. builds a fucking world for you. Like you get to see Oh, it's so cool. And yeah, it's it's great. I love the overreacting if if like, you know, a monster gets a sock on them and they feel like shave them down and like spray them. It's oh, it's so great to see like the paranoia. And also it's a bit of an anti-capitalist film in the end, or like anti-big business in a lot of ways.

SPEAKER_01

And I I love how it takes the idea of, you know, the the monsters in the closet and just scary monsters and gives you a behind the uh scenes.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, like like they they think in their world they have to get scares to basically survive and power their city. And it's like, oh, that's kind of fun that it's just a job to them. They're not actually gonna hurt these kids. They just, oh, you know, gotta clock into my job and scare some kids.

SPEAKER_01

Um, I think this one was the one that I wanted to have a sequel the the most.

SPEAKER_02

Um you got one. I mean I guess prequel, really.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So I wanted to know what came after because it was so cool, because you know, spoiler for this almost 30-year-old film. Oh lord, you know, the end it uh turns to laughter, you know, so instead of screams, they, you know, turn to comedy to to a power.

SPEAKER_02

Mike Wazowski's like trying to stand up out on a child who's very confused.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and then he just ends up like, you know, doing the physical comedy and everything.

SPEAKER_02

Poking himself in the eye or whatever.

SPEAKER_01

But that that would be such a cool like to like see that. Um, and I always, you know, wanted to see Boo like older, like Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Well, because it it ends, right? Like with him peeking through the door and you hear an older Boo say, Kitty? Like, and you can tell she's older, and you're like, ugh, like incredible. Yeah, yeah. I Monsters Inc., oof. That it might be a top three or at worst top five Pixar film. It's so good. It's really good. Man, I could talk about it forever, but we need to move on. Ricky, we're only on movie five of 30, so we need to talk about finding Nima from 2003. Where do you have it?

SPEAKER_01

This might shock you, but it's elite. It it takes a while. Well, I mean, Doug's life was just good.

SPEAKER_02

This this one I have one step below elite. So so far I've only done two. You've done five out of six. Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Or four out of five right now. That's funny. Um yeah, like, so the beginning of this one is still like tough to to watch. It's like, why they gotta go there? Like, you know? Um, but the animation is just so amazing. Yeah. The the whole ocean. Um, and I I love them using Australia for for some reason. Yeah, that's kind of a cool scenic decision. And uh the um the the fish tank part is so cool.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, the the girl just constantly tapping on it with her big old braces.

SPEAKER_01

Oh god, what is her her name? Is her name Debbie?

SPEAKER_02

I I can't remember.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, man. I can't remember, but but they all know her and they're like Godfishy!

SPEAKER_00

Like, oh god.

SPEAKER_02

I think putting Toy Story 2 aside a little bit, I think Finding Nemo was probably the first movie that I thought was very emotional of Pixars.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Like that one was trying to fuck you up pretty quickly with the Yeah, with the dead mom, and then immediately, you know, guy losing his son. Like, it does emotionally pull you in pretty quickly. We probably don't see that again until uh up, well, which I'm sure we'll get to.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and um the the whole uh the overbearing parent, the overprotective protective parent. I'm gonna touch the butt. Yeah. He touched the butt. He touched the butt. Um I Pixar does a great job with that too. It's like they they have these ad uh uh they have these adult themes, but they also have you know the silly like kid themes. Like this boat they think is a butt. Um but yeah, like and we have to mention Ellen, one of the greatest voice per performers. Yeah, Dory, I think.

SPEAKER_02

As much as I know people hate Ellen because apparently she's just a nightmare to work with.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, toxic. You know what?

SPEAKER_02

She crushed it as Dory.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Sorry. She did. And if I don't say that, she'll yell at me.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, right. She'll find us.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I have Finding Nemo uh not quite into your elite status. I have it as the greats. I do think it's very, very good. It's weird. I I think of this movie quite fond fondly, but I don't really remember watching it more than a handful of times. But even those few viewings, it still stuck out to me as this fantastic movie. I'm I mean, I knew so many people who quoted fish are friends, not food. Constantly. I went to an aquarium recently and someone quoted it. Not myself or my wife, just some other person said it. So it's still a popular movie and reference and everything. It's just a good one.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, for for sure. It's a classic.

SPEAKER_02

Uh Ricky, we are on the Incredibles of 2004, and we're death. Yep. This I mean I I have this as my goat. I have this in my top.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I I think the Incredibles is incredible.

SPEAKER_01

It's like I we we talked about ranking them, and like for for for me, like, cause my my rankings because I have so many in the elite status, it's very hard a lot of the time for for me to like rank them. Because like, I mean, they're they're just there's so many that are so so great. But this one is definitely like very high for for me. Um sometimes like I think of it as my my number one.

SPEAKER_02

Um I mean that that's that's a good choice. It's really great. What do you love about the Incredibles?

SPEAKER_01

So I think I appreciate it even more now that I'm older, because it's taking like the whole um Alan Moore's Watchmen, um, that idea of, you know, heroes being out outlawed. Um and then it's putting it in like this really cool idea of superheroes like trying to live like a normal life. Um and just the the the art style of it, like Brad Brad Bird coming in, um, and it's different than all the others that that came be before. Um one of the best voice casts.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, but you have some real talent.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and like just uh the uh shots that they like give you, like the one of um Jason Lee as a kid, uh Incredible like waking up when like he's been, you know, his heart's been broken by Mr. Incredible, and then it's like oh this is why. Um and then there there's still you know the cute things like uh Jack Jack's adorable.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, Jack Jack, Violet, of course, you know, crushing on boys, like going through her awkward teen years. Yeah, then Dash just like his powers.

SPEAKER_01

You know, it's like I have them and I can't use them. Like, come on, I'm a superhero.

SPEAKER_02

There's that cute moment at the very end of the movie where they finally let Dash do track team, but his parents are like, go Dash, go, go to slow, slow, slow.

SPEAKER_01

And he's like, uh really funny. And then and then he finishes like second, and then they're like losing their their their shit. Like, this is the greatest thing ever. So good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's I think one thing that I forgot about when I saw the Incredibles recently was the movie starts off with a suicide attempt, like pretty early on, like a guy tries to kill himself.

SPEAKER_01

Every time I watch it, I'm like, it's crazy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And then that guy sues Mr. Incredible for ruining his suicide attempt.

SPEAKER_01

He he literally has the align that I didn't like fully understand until I got older. It's like, you didn't save my life, you ruined my dad. Yeah. Like, holy shit. Like that.

SPEAKER_02

In a Pixar film. Yeah. And like I get it. Like Disney Pixar films have kind of always gone hard in some way. Like, there's always been like a dead parent or you know, something or other like that. So the fact that they had a suicide attempt, Jesus Christ. That is wild. I I always regret a little bit. My parents, we went to go see a movie, and we were either gonna see the Incredibles or the Spongebob movie. And I think myself and maybe my brother, like, we should see the Spongebob movie. It should be it's gonna be good. And we watched it and just it wasn't good. And then like later we saw The Incredibles, and all I could think was, wow, I really chose the wrong movie over this because the Incredibles is so fucking good. I think what I love about it too is the fact that in a way it does a really good satire on superheroes. Well before superhero fatigue even hit us, because 2004 there was what, two Spider-Man movies out? I don't think even maybe just one. Um but it was already taking the piss out of superheroes that wore capes or um, you know, as you said, they kind of did the watchman thing of like they can't it is a bit more mature, it's not just we're heroes and we're great. And I think also it did a really good job touching on the banality of normal life. Because that's what causes everything. Like he could have just stayed in his normal life and nothing would have ever gone wrong, but instead he wanted to feel like a hero again and kind of fucks everything up in a lot of ways. I think that's such a cool, cool take, and super relatable. I know a bunch of people who, you know, in their 30s, 40s, or whatever, they go, Man, I hate my job, and I I used to fucking party all night and now I'm in bed by eight. What's going on? So it's just so fantastic. It's definitely up there for me.

SPEAKER_01

Oh yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Uh moving on, we have Cars from 2006. I have this is actually one of the few movies I haven't seen. So I I'm gonna be uh deferring to you on all the Cars movies here.

SPEAKER_01

So I've only seen the first one.

SPEAKER_02

And it's an elite category.

SPEAKER_01

No. Um I I I put it in good. Um it's definitely like in the bottom of the Pixar canon. Um what I was telling you, I I I think this one more than any other, maybe, like it feels like it's um very like commercial, like it's like this one was more so made to sell toys and Yes. Yeah, like it's it's very kid focused. I I think like Larry the the the cable guy's like made her this, you know, truck, and he's cute and everything, and it's funny, but I mean it's like it's you know over the the the top, like like it's nothing, you know, shaking anything up, like doing anything crazy new. Um, but you know, I put it in good because it's like it's you know there there's nothing like necessarily bad about it. It's just you know, you have this track record, and then this one comes along and it's like, oh, this is weird. Yeah. Um yeah, so I mean you're you're you're not like this. Isn't one of those that I'll be like, oh man, you haven't seen cars? It's like I'd never cars trilogy. Yeah, like you don't know the cars movies? Get out of here.

SPEAKER_02

You call yourself a movie man. Not even seeing Cars one, two, or three. Unbelievable.

SPEAKER_01

I actually looked at a ranking um that had like Cars 3 as like the uh top one.

SPEAKER_02

Like the the best Pixar film?

SPEAKER_01

No, no, no, no.

SPEAKER_02

Just the best of the Cars.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Okay. I was like, huh, like wow.

SPEAKER_02

Maybe it gets good. Um I'll never know.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So I mean, like like you haven't seen any of them. I've only seen the one, so like, yeah, this is our uh cars talk.

SPEAKER_02

So sadly, a few uh are sticking around for the cars to I'm just imagining a few people wearing like you know, a mater hat or like a Latin Queen shirt, like holding like a car's lunch case, like a lunch box. Just being like, Oh, here it comes. They're gonna talk about my favorite movie. Just kissing on it. Let's move on. We'll move on. Uh 2007. We have Ratatouille.

SPEAKER_01

Alright, where do you you put this one? I after Answer wisely.

SPEAKER_02

Here's the thing, Ricky. I think it's just in the goods. It's good. It's good. Are you serious? Yeah. I don't I don't have it in my grates. I think it's better than fine, but I think it's good. Ricky, is this another elite choice?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, this is uh this could be my number one. Wow, really? Yeah. What about this movie? Ratatouille. So I love the the message of anyone can can cook, cause what it's saying, it's like, you know, just go for your dreams. I mean, it's like, you know, don't let anyone say, you know, you you can't do something. Um, and that just like you know, whether you want to do film or whether you want to do anything, um just try it. And also the whole critic um thing, it's how I think of criticism and why like it's so tough to me. It's like like someone's like just, you know, like trying to go for for for their dream and everything, and then there's someone, you know, like trying to like tear them down and stuff. It's I don't know. I I always feel like the constructive criticism thing. It's like you can criticize someone, but it's like, how do you help them like get get better?

SPEAKER_02

Or and is a critic even trying to help someone get better, or is it more of just right I'm saying you're not doing because that's one thing I do remember liking about the movie is I think the critic has a line, something along I'm paraphrasing, but basically saying, I don't like food, I love food. And I kinda like that because it does humanize the critic a bit because I know I'm you when you and I talk about movies or video games or something we're really passionate about, it's hard for us to go, oh I mean that's that's those are flaws, we can just overlook them because who cares? We we try to really look at them and go, no, we know what movies can be. We know what video games can be, we know what food can be, so let's hit the fucking potential. And that's where a lot of those nitpicks come in, which is why I do love that character.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so I guess what oh, and also like I think it's some of the most beautiful food ever put on screen. Like, like, oh my gosh, like like the uh kitchen light like scenes are just amazing. Um and yeah, it's just like they uh picked this rat. You know, rats are nasty, ew, and this like they make a rat lovable.

SPEAKER_02

So And I love that it's Pat and Oswald.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Just a great voice for a rat.

SPEAKER_01

So I guess what don't you enjoy about it?

SPEAKER_02

It's not that there's anything I can specifically point to and go, ugh, I hate that decision. It's just the movie, the few times I've watched it, there's always a moment where I just I I don't feel like I'm ever getting grabbed fully. I'm never getting fully on board, like uh what what's his name, Luigi or is that the the main chef? Oh gosh. Like, I feel like I don't really think much about him in that whole movie. You know what I mean? Like, I'm more focused on Remy as opposed to the chef guy itself, and I'm sure he has a plot and an arc, but I always just kind of forget about it as every time I watch, or it doesn't stick with me at the very end.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I mean, his whole thing is kind of like he's the uh son of the the the main chefies kind of. But it is, you know, more um Rimmies.

SPEAKER_02

I will say I do love that moment at the end where the critic eats the ratatouille and then basically flashes back. I thought that was a really cute moment. I do think that's a great, great scene.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I just um the animation just France, um and yeah, it's the the animation, the Astori for for for me. And and honestly, that is part of the beauty, I think, of Pixar is like there are so many I don't care what what you say, there are so many elite movies and um like you know some might might not and like so many of them are different, so it's like everyone can like have their like certain favorite, it's like that that that like really like touches them, really hits home. Um which I know yours were going to get to here in a little bit.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's coming up right next, in fact, 2008. Oh WALL-I think Wally is a top-tier Pixar film.

SPEAKER_01

Well, so this is your favorite.

SPEAKER_02

This isn't, I don't think it's my number one, but it's up there.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, I was gonna say, I know your number.

SPEAKER_02

I think you have an idea what my number one is, but um yeah, Wally I I think is pr was well ahead of its time in messaging as well.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

I think it also does a phenomenal job with scenic tor scenic storytelling. It's not it's not a lot of dialogue in that movie, not in really until they get to the spaceship. Um in which you have Fred Willard who R.I.P. But yeah, I mean it's it's pretty spectacular that it is just these two robots who they kind of have their little love story, but you know, you're watching this destroyed earth, you're watching these this world where people basically gave up to technology and can't do anything on their own. And in a weird way, I don't think they were really going as hard into like AI necessarily as I might be drawing from it, but looking at AI now, I kind of see like Wall becoming a bit more real as as every day passes by. And so I I just think it's also gorgeous. Like, you look at some of those space shots and you can just weep. It's so pretty, it still looks gorgeous.

SPEAKER_01

And they uh brought in your your boy Roger Deacons uh as a consultant um on the uh the the film W which is crazy. Yeah. Uh but yeah, um this one, you know, is up there. Um this one too, like some days it's my f number one. Um the use of Hello Dolly in it too. It's just you know one one of my favorite musicals. Yeah. Um and it's just like like I I don't think I knew anything about Hello Dolly like like be before this, and then you know, like like loving Hello Dolly now, it's like there there's that uh uh other aspect where it's like this is just you know such like a a fun, you know, thing and this robot just wanting love, um seeing it in these.

SPEAKER_02

I know it's so fucking sweet movie.

SPEAKER_01

Um yeah.

SPEAKER_02

So good. Uh speaking of so good and so sweet and so wonderful and nothing never goes wrong, up 2009. Now obviously it has that great laugh line at the very beginning where it kills his wife.

SPEAKER_01

Where they can have children.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. That is that is an insane like if we thought Incredibles was going hard for doing a suicide, having a watching a a married couple fall in love and then not being able to conceive like conceive or imply that maybe she did and then lost the child, like, there's some that's fucking wild to start a movie like that. Especially like a Pixar film where theoretically it's gonna be a lot of kids. Yeah It's such a great opening in such the way.

SPEAKER_01

This one I I struggle with this one because like it's it's definitely top top tier, like like one of the uh best. This is another one. Um Yeah, yeah, of course. Um but uh yeah, with Ratatouille and Wally, like definitely toward the uh top and the the incredibles, but um Yeah, like gosh, those serious scenes like just hit you so hard.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I kept this one just out of the top tier. I have this on the the high end of the greats. Because of not not because of the beginning. Uh in fact, it's it's more so when I think about the movie, I really love a lot of parts of it, but then I feel like anytime I've watched it, I'm always kind of like okay, I'm ready for this to be done with. Like I just I not that it's too long, but like there's like little parts that just don't excite me as much as some other moments. Um I will say one of my favorite memories of watching this movie was I watched it with a group of people, and there's a part where you know the old man is trying to climb up a mountain uh because it gets, you know, maybe falls out the house or whatever. And someone in my watch party goes, A man that old wouldn't be strong enough to do that. I go, the house is flying on balloons and there's talking dogs. This is where you drew the line.

SPEAKER_01

I'm finally out of this film.

SPEAKER_02

You had me with the bird and the the little boy who gets trapped on a house with him. That all made sense to me. But a man with upper body arm strength at his age, nah. I'm done. I'll take my money back, please. So insane.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it's my my whole thing with it is just it can be so damn sad sometimes, right?

SPEAKER_02

I'm like, uh it's a hard one to throw on because the beginning is really hard to get on.

SPEAKER_01

I mean, just like, you know, throughout. Like this old ass guy. Like his wife. Yeah, and that's why he wants to hold on to the house. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, it's it's pretty messed up. Uh up. So uh shall we move on? Yeah. Let's go to 2010 Toy Story 3.

SPEAKER_01

Nothing sad here.

SPEAKER_03

Ricky, are you ready?

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_03

It's fine. It's fine.

SPEAKER_01

I I think I re remember us talking about this in college. Like you weren't a big fan.

SPEAKER_02

No, I it's strange. I know a lot of people love this movie because it we it really did match our lives growing up in terms of like childhood and then going to college and all that stuff. Like it was probably in that same ballpark. I feel like it was really redundant from two. Even Lazzo has the exact same like fake rev you know villain reveal that Stinky Pete had. It was the exact same. And so I j I I disliked I wouldn't say I I hate it by any means, but it is my first Svine, so it's my lowest ranked movie so far today. But I didn't like it enough to go see Toy Story 4. Wasn't interested in four because I didn't really care for three that much.

SPEAKER_01

Um I definitely so like this, I don't love it, I think, a lot as much as most people. Of course it's still elite for.

SPEAKER_02

Is it really? Yeah, man, that's bananas.

SPEAKER_01

So I put it in there mainly cause like it does do the whole like growing up thing. Sure. So well, and it just nails you in the heart. Um and like just, you know, like losing, and maybe it's like when I saw it in theaters, like that was kind of a still a tough time for uh me. Um so like yeah, it like hit even harder, maybe. Um but yeah, it's like it's not I don't put put it above two.

SPEAKER_02

Um you still have it in the elite. That is Yeah. Wow. Maybe maybe I need to rewatch it.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe I'm wrong. I mean, I don't you know, I don't really argue with what what you're you're saying, but I can't it's kinda like one for uh me. It's like it does those the emotional aspect like so well.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um that I still gotta put it up there.

SPEAKER_02

Well, let's pick up the pace here because we still have lots of movies to get through.

SPEAKER_01

Okay.

SPEAKER_02

So uh Cars 2, 2011, neither of us saw it.

SPEAKER_01

Sorry, guys.

SPEAKER_02

Sorry, Cars fans. Uh 2012, Brave. Uh, it's good. That's where that's where I have mine as well. I remember it being good, uh, but it not a lot blows me away with it, but I do remember really liking just some of the visuals a lot.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, and like I I that is one of those that I wanna like so much more. Like, I want it to be so much better because I do love the visuals, and like her as a character, like like she's adorable and everything. And but it's like, yeah, like it's just it's good.

SPEAKER_02

I I uh have a weird connection to this movie because uh I did a theater gig. This person was basically just doing like Disney like off Broadway, kind of like not far away, but like they just took Disney and Pixar films and just like wrote scripts and sold tickets like completely illegal. You should not have been doing that. But they did want a brave, and that's I I got cast as the father in Brave, which was very funny.

SPEAKER_01

And then I don't think you ever told me about that.

SPEAKER_02

No, no, it's uh probably for legal reasons. Legal reasons. I I just called it bootleg Disney because it really was like hairs our version of Aladdin, hairs are brave. Anytime I would go and see when they would do this, I would just think to myself, this is probably gonna get shut down if anyone catches anything about this. Right. Uh moving on, 2013, Monsters University. Here's your prequel. I also have this as it's good.

SPEAKER_01

I think I do as well. Um yeah, it's like when it first came out, I was like so, so excited and everything. Yeah. Um, and I still have my Monsters University hat that I got from Disney. Um, but yeah, it's uh it's fine. It's good.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, the only thing I really remember about it is like the big football game at the end or sports game, whatever they I don't even remember if they do play football, but they just have that line of when we defeat you, no one's gonna think about you guys again. It's like, yeah, well, when we win, people won't let you forget it. And I thought that was a cool like line there. Right. Yeah. Uh move Lari, let's talk about some real shit. Inside Out 2015.

SPEAKER_01

Real shit.

SPEAKER_02

Like, this is a real good movie.

SPEAKER_01

This is this is a I was like Dude, what?

SPEAKER_02

Sorry. This is real shit in a good way. I I think Inside Out is one of the greats, easily.

SPEAKER_01

It is. Yeah. Yeah. For for sure. Like, this is just I think Pete Doctor kind of like had this idea, like, from like his experiences with his daughter. I I believe it's like just like you know, this whole idea of like raising a child, and like, you know, what are you doing? Like, you don't you don't know. It's like, and it's so great, like just the emotions in the head, so relatable for everyone.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, for sure. And I really love that one does the thing that I said before, I love world building, so this even built a world within each person, so I always admire that. This has maybe one of my favorite voice casts. I really Emmy Polar, Bill Hader, Lewis Black as anger. Come on, come on. Let's fucking go. That's Richard Cobb. Yeah, exactly. Like, it's just perfect. Uh, and I really like that it is a good lesson that you can't be one emotion all the time. You can't be happy all the time, you can't be sad all the time, you can't be angry all the time. I think it's a nice way to tell kids you have to balance your emotions, otherwise you become kind of emotionless, that we saw with Riley. And her getting on that bus and getting ready to like leave town, that's fucking heart-wrenching, man.

SPEAKER_01

And her just like having to leave her her friends and stuff. And yeah, it's and I loved the beginning when when like you like see her like growing up and like like hey, these are the emotions like coming in, and it's like I don't like broccoli. Well, here's disgust, and it's like um fear and all these things, and you know it's so good. It's so so cool. Such a cool idea.

SPEAKER_02

That's really, really good. And now on the opposite end of the spectrum here, the good dinosaur 2015. I saw both Inside Out and Good Dinosaur in theaters that year, and I remember thinking Pixar put out one of their bests and one of their worst. The Good Dinosaur is my least favorite Pixar film. It is just awful. It is really bad.

SPEAKER_01

It's one of the uh six that I haven't seen, and um it's one of those where where like I just, you know, I I don't really have any desire to like see it.

SPEAKER_02

No, it's it's a nothing film. It really is just this dinosaur is just trying to get this kid, I think, back to his parents, which is just Ice Age. So Yeah, right. Like it's already happened. We've already seen that movie. And I think what sucked when I was watching it, I remember thinking this will be a perfect uh movie for that did like that that Wally did, which is take out all the dialogue and just make this storytelling through visuals. I think I was like, this this is what good dinosaur should be. And then the dinosaur never shuts the fuck up. Oh my god, dude. I I was doing watching that movie because I was just like, why are you guys making the wrong? Kill the dog.

SPEAKER_01

Kill them. Aren't they extinct yet? Kill them!

SPEAKER_02

So we're gonna have to actually leave this theater. Not until I see his blood. The only good dinosaur is a dead dinosaur. Are you all with me, folks? Moon. Hey, Cars 3 2017. Never saw it.

SPEAKER_01

Sorry guys again.

SPEAKER_02

But I hear it's the best of the three, so we'll we'll just agree with that. 2017, Coco.

SPEAKER_01

More like shit. Wow.

SPEAKER_02

Ricky.

SPEAKER_01

I know this is your favorite.

SPEAKER_02

Wow. This is elite. I was like, you fucking better you stay psyched right now.

SPEAKER_01

Coco is this is, I guess, the musical one.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, this is probably the most musical one they have because it is him singing all these wonderful Spanish songs. And I cannot think of a Pixar film that fucks me up more emotionally. Holy shit. Him singing Remember Me to his grandmother, who is to he's singing to the title of a cocoa. Like singing to her, oh my lord, man. And she's trying so hard to like remember things, like remember her father and every like fucking hell. It's so good. And it's so gorgeous. It it I still think this might be one of the prettiest worlds that they've ever made. And again, we're all building. The the day at the land of the dead is so captivatingly beautiful.

SPEAKER_01

It is really cool.

SPEAKER_02

It's wonderful. I can talk about this one forever, but we're you know, we have limited time, so I can't say too too much. I just know I fucking love it. I love the Frito Kallo bit where they she meets Frito Kallo in the afterlife, and uh it's so cool.

SPEAKER_01

Uh-huh.

SPEAKER_02

Oh man.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe we can devote an episode to cooking.

SPEAKER_02

I I we'll definitely have to come back to it at some point, because now I have to go back to Angry Mode, because next up is Incredibles 2 in 2018.

SPEAKER_01

Um so this one we saw together. Um I rem remember really liking it. I don't know. I don't re-remember a ton about it. I remember the Jack Jack parts killed me.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Like when he's like with the raccoon or something, that is like hilarious. But um, so what I put down, I had it in great, but I feel like that is like, you know, it could go down to like good. I don't know.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I have it as S fine. And it kind of straddles, I think, the goods and Svine. Because, you know, I looked at my IMDB and apparently I gave it a seven, which would probably put it in the goods normally. But when I think back to the movie, I think it's it's so strange that it takes place directly after the first movie, which is awesome. Continue right where it's left off. That I love that, but then they do the exact same plot, but just from Helen's perspective. So it just feels like, well, no, didn't we just learn like even like Mr. Incredible has a whole thing of like, boy, I sure wish I could be a superhero again, and all I could think is you in your world, that was two days ago. You just learned a lesson and you're already got to meet. Yeah. So like I I think that was my biggest disappointment because I love the Incredible so much that the second one, what, ten years after? Yeah, like over ten years later, and the only plot they could come up with was kind of the same plot. Yeah. And you go, really? Why? But again, you're right, like the Jack Jack stuff is really fun. A lot of the animation and the fight scenes are really cool. I love that they pull in all these other superheroes and they're really creative and fun, but man, the same plot?

SPEAKER_01

Yikes. Yeah, I think it was hurt, you know, like having The Incredibles name in the title. It's like you have so much, you know, to live up to, and it just it couldn't.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. Well then let's move on to Toy Story 4 in 2019. Ricky, I've not seen it. Have you seen Toy Story 4?

SPEAKER_01

Um, yeah, it's good. Um Keanu Reeves is in it. Uh he's funny. Um as like uh I guess he's like a Ken doll kind of. No, I think he's like his own, like kind of toy or whatever. But um Yeah, uh this is another one that I don't re remember a ton. I know Tony Hale's like a spork.

SPEAKER_03

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

And like that is like cute, he's fun. Um but yeah, like I that is why like I'm I'm kind of up in the air on Toy Story 5. It's like this might the well may be running dry here.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I think for Toy Story 5, they're gonna introduce a tablet, which I think is you know a smart call because kids love their tablets now and that's their screens everywhere. But I do know that there is a huge irony that parents are 100% gonna put Toy Story 5 on their tablet and then give it to their kids. And I just love that that's 100% gonna happen.

SPEAKER_01

I hope they get scared and crush the tablet.

SPEAKER_02

That'll be legitimately amazing. Alright, let's go to 2020. Onward we shall go. I still haven't seen it.

SPEAKER_03

It's fine.

SPEAKER_02

I I think this is another I I think this is roughly after Incredibles 2, we start getting into a lot of what I would call kind of wasted potential. Where onward has this wonderful fantasy world, it's very beautiful, it's got all these creatures, and they don't really explore them at all. And you just go, fuck, man, you have all of these cool things.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And I get like the that's sort of the point of the movie is that magic doesn't exist anymore, and so all these magical creatures are just doing normal human things, but that's so boring. Like you have these fun magical creatures, just have them be magical and fun, and then come up with another story that you could still do. And also, I didn't find it as tear jerky as a lot of people, but maybe it's I don't know. Most of the movie you're hanging out with just their dad's crotch. So that is true. It's just like his pants.

SPEAKER_01

This is the film for dad's crotch.

SPEAKER_02

If you love your dad's crotch, you're gonna cry during Onward.

SPEAKER_01

No.

SPEAKER_02

I really hope Onward's tackle on really is just like come for the magic, stay for dad's crotch. Um yeah, I also remember Onward does a lot of like similar tropey stuff, like a bunch of motorcycles get knocked over in front of a bar and now they're mad. And it's like again, you you have all these fun magical creatures fucking do something with it, and they just refuse.

SPEAKER_01

Do magic!

SPEAKER_02

Do fun. Uh moving on to 2020, December 25th, we have soul.

SPEAKER_01

Uh this one's tough. It's like around great or good. Um I love jazz, so like I just love, you know, like the whole like incorporation of that. It's really cool. But I guess like the whole story kind of gets basic, maybe.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. That that that's the music's cool. Oh, yeah, for sure.

SPEAKER_01

I I'm pretty sure John Batiste um he did the score with uh Reznor and Atticus Ross.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

And I think my thing with Soul is also what I was saying with these other movies. It feels like some missed opportunities and missed potential because you have this amazing world, this afterlife world, which is fascinating. It has these rules and some questionable rules and silliness. But you go, This is cool. I want to learn more about this place, and then the second half of the movie is a body swap movie where he's a cat. And I go, Oh, I don't like that for a two-minute bit, but I kind of would rather he's in his own body or he's you know, still in this afterlife world. Like, that's so much more interesting than a generic, you're now a cat. That's so wacky. And it just makes me go, why did you make that choice?

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, if it had been like all about the music and stuff, I feel like it could have been like a really cool like their their version of like Coco, maybe like something like that with jazz.

SPEAKER_02

Like, it's it's interesting because Coco kind of ends with the moral lesson that, like, yeah, you should follow your dreams and you can play music and all that. Soul kind of ends in a way where it's like, yeah, no, it's not really your dreams aren't really that important, and you shouldn't follow your dreams. Like, it's unless it's like your dream should be that you should be a teacher. And it's like that's fine, but it also feels like if if he came to that a bit more naturally, as opposed to just the movie saying, You should be a teacher and be happy because you played with your favorite people and it didn't make you happy, so sucks. You can go, oh, okay. Bye, I guess.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. I guess I'll be happy here.

SPEAKER_02

Ricky from 2021, we are talking Luca.

SPEAKER_01

Watched it for the first time yesterday. This might be I don't know if this is controversial. No. I like it a lot though. I put it in great. Wow, okay. I don't know if that's controversial, because I don't know how like how people really feel. I feel like it's not super loved, but like I was just like Italy is just it's gorgeous. Like they whenever they like go to like a foreign land, like they just do it so well. Sure. Um But yeah, like it's gorgeous, the animation, and like the uh the story's really sweet. Um it's like, you know, um these two boys, like, you know, their their friendship and everything. Um I can definitely understand where like some people like like when it first started, I was like, oh, this little mermaid. Um but uh yeah, like it's fairly basic, I guess. Um, but it's I love the uh characters. Um and I was just hooked. Like in it Well, they are fish. It uh Yeah, yeah. And um, so the uh fish sounding like sheep was great. I was like, why these fish sound like sheep? Yeah, yeah, it's just it it touched me.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, that's good. I maybe I need to rewatch it because I've only seen it once, and I really don't remember much about it except I just have a vague thinking uh or like a vague thought of I don't remember there being a real plot necessarily. Like I don't remember there being a good guy, bad guy, I just kind of remember.

SPEAKER_01

So they're that they're sea monsters, and then they like go on land, and like this town is like, no no, sea monsters. So it's like that is pretty much you know, it they they like can't can't get wet, or they'll like turn back into the sea monsters. So it's like, yeah, like that is um the uh that is the the whole danger, I guess. But but yeah, I mean it's fairly basic. Um I was just on on board.

SPEAKER_02

I'll give it a rewatch, because that one I really don't remember super well. I just remember it being fine. Yeah. Uh 2022 Turning Red.

SPEAKER_01

This one is great. I agree.

SPEAKER_02

This is a great movie.

SPEAKER_01

Like this. Yeah, it's it could be close to Elite. Like it's very strong. I've still only seen it once, but I remember loving.

SPEAKER_02

I feel like I need to re-watch it, but I remember when I watched it, the I think I've only watched it once or twice, but each time I went, this is just so fun. I kinda love the message of you know, growing up and you know, it's a metaphor for puberty. I think that's a nice metaphor. I also would argue that I think I said Monsters Inc. is the funniest. Turning red is pretty damn hysterical. And I also like that this felt like a real change in terms of their like not necessarily their animation, but their art direction. This one felt like it was trying to influence a bit more of even like anime style, like at some times. There's a great moment where the girl is drawing, I think, her crush, and then her face just goes like it just like squirr- just like squirches up in such a very weird way. You go like, what the f what the fuck just happened?

SPEAKER_01

Uh yeah, I um I feel like this is like kind of hidden, kind of. I feel like this is like pretty uh uh underrated.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um like because like I think whenever people like like see it, they like love it, but I feel like a lot of people like haven't seen it. Um so like this is like one of those that I definitely like like if you haven't seen it, like seek it out. Yeah. Especially one of the more recent ones. Like, this is definitely at the top.

SPEAKER_02

Jumping to the next movie, I actually have not seen this one, 2022 Light Year. No, I know like a lot of people say this is the worst one. Yeah, people I know really hate this one. I also know that this movie pissed off a lot of conservatives. It also like bored the hell out of liberal people, so it seems like no one likes this movie.

SPEAKER_00

Huh.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I don't really know anything about it.

SPEAKER_02

The only thing I know about it is that like it's supposed to be the movie that Andy saw that inspired Buzz Light You're the Toy. So it's supposed to be like, that's what we're watching is the movie that Andy saw. Which I think is a cool, like, you know, background, you know, story world-building thing, but I don't know, I I just wasn't really interested in seeing that movie at all.

SPEAKER_01

Maybe I'll get to it at some point, but I feel like they didn't like believe in it a lot, because I feel like the marketing for it wasn't like, and I think it's like you know, this is light year buzz it, but it's not really the one you know and love. So Oh shit.

SPEAKER_02

We skipped one. Uh 2016, Finding Dory. We overlooked that.

SPEAKER_01

Oh no. Well, we Dory'd. Um yeah. I think I put it in good. Yeah, I said it's fine. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Great. Glad we got that one tack tackled. Yeah. Yeah, I it's okay. I I remember not being crazy about it even as I was watching it, thinking like, it's cute, got some laughs, but I think Dory's better as a side character and doesn't need her own thing.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, it introduces like some fun characters like uh Ed O'Neill is like, you know, the um the what's it called? Like the uh the octopus or whatever. Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Sorry, I think Oh my god, Ellen DeGeneres is at my door. Oh shit. Uh uh elite movie, Finding Dory, is the best. It's really good. Okay, she's gone. Alright.

SPEAKER_03

I I don't like Ricky, I don't like Finding Dory that much. I think it's fine.

SPEAKER_01

Don't look behind the movie.

SPEAKER_02

Going back on track, 2023, we have Elemental. Um I I still haven't seen it. I watched it recently. The trailers for that movie did it no justice because I thought watching from the trailers that it was just gonna try to be like a Zootopia ripoff, and it really isn't. It is actually an immigrant story. It is really cute.

SPEAKER_01

I love the visuals from what I've seen. Like it it looks gorgeous. Um, and like this is the uh the one that I haven't seen that I really wanted to like see.

SPEAKER_02

Like, like this is I put it in good still that it's it didn't blow me away. There are some I mean, it's gorgeous, of course. It really is gorgeous. And that's to be expected at this point, you know, Pixar is only making their films more and more beautiful. But the it's really just do you like the main two characters? And if you don't, or you feel like you want something more from it, you're not really gonna get a lot from this movie. Although it does a good job with it being kind of like an immigrant story where fire basically came from its own land, and there's a lot of people that say like no fire allowed, so they're getting kind of prejudiced against, and then her dad becomes pretty prejudiced against anyone who's not fire because people were prejudiced against him. So like it does, I think, lay that groundwork out pretty nicely without coming off as preachy or too forced. It just little details like that, but I think it's a good movie, but it's still again. This is where it I think it falters. It has so much to go against. Like, there's so many other good Pixar films, it's just impossible. Uh only three left. We have Inside Out 2 for 2024. So Inside Out, the first one I put in my uh goats. I I should say now, no more goats that are left for me. We've we've done the six.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Um what did you think of Inside Out 2?

SPEAKER_01

I thought I I I put it in great. Um I like it a lot. Like like I like the introduction of the other emotions and like her like like getting older, it's still like um it's still doing that what it did in the first one ri really well. Um yeah, I feel like it doesn't quite match, you know, m match up to the first one.

SPEAKER_02

But it's still absolutely worth a watch. I love all the characters. I I think Bill Hader got replaced in it, which was a bummer. Um Tony Hale, yeah. And there are moments that I want to highlight real fast. One, we didn't say this for the first movie, but it applies for both. Gorgeous music. The the score is spectacular in these movies. The my favorite moment of Inside Out 2 is when Riley starts to have a panic attack, and one of the things they do, they don't really say it, so if you don't know it, then good for you, you maybe have never had a panic attack. But there is a moment where she starts to have that panic attack, and then the camera focuses like on her touching the bench, it focuses the sound of like the ice skating gets picked up. Because one of the techniques for a panic attack are to touch something, acknowledge that surfaces, exactly, acknowledge that you're touching something. Can you say a few things that you see? What do you hear? Basically, it's it's just saying acknowledge all your senses, and it's supposed to help pull you kind of back into your body and ground yourself. And they show that in the movie without saying what it is, they don't really say what she's doing, but they show it, and I just went, That's so fucking smart to throw that out there. I think that's uh was a brilliant, brilliant decision. And super well executed.

SPEAKER_01

Oh, for for sure. Yeah, this is one of those that I wouldn't mind a third one. Like like seeing her even older, like that could be cool.

SPEAKER_02

Next up, 2025 Elio. You just watched this one, correct?

SPEAKER_01

Yep. What'd you think? Um I I put it in great. In great. I liked it a lot.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Yeah. You you were texting me about the little like cute bug character and Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

I can't remember the name.

SPEAKER_02

Oh, let me see. You texted it to me just the other day. It was Oh, Glorodon.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. Oh, Glordon's so so cute.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, I I I would say this this really straddled good and it's fine. I there's a lot I really liked about it, and I kinda I kind of want to re-watch it just to make sure that I just wasn't I don't know, like just not in the mood to watch it or something. Like, you know, that happens in the movies. Because I do like the I like Elio's whole thing of lying about being the president or like the ruler of Earth. I think that's something a kid would do.

SPEAKER_01

So uh and I kind of And I mean like like he wants like he's this is his dream, you know, he's gonna say anything he has to do, you know, to be able to stay here and I also like that he is the wants to live here.

SPEAKER_02

Exactly. And I I like that he's a soft boy who dreams of escape. Like that is a really cute and probably a a lot more common now than anything for like young, you know, kids, but especially like young boys, being like, I don't really identify or like where this world is.

SPEAKER_01

Right.

SPEAKER_02

So I do like that a lot. And now, unless you have any other final thoughts, we have one final movie. Ricky 2026. This movie just came out this year, Hoppers.

SPEAKER_01

I put this one in great as well. I did. I loved it. I really liked it. It's it's really cute. Um, it's very sweet.

SPEAKER_02

The I I I'm trying not to because it is so recent, I almost want to be careful what I say, but there's a moment with uh all of the kings of the nature where uh the one that I texted you about.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

There's a moment in their audience, and you'll know what it is. You're going to gasp because you're not. It really does come out of nowhere. This movie I thought did a really great job. Um, so this is a very activist-y movie, like an environmental activist film, because it's follows this girl who really likes animals and wants to keep the uh her glade and these trees and forest and nature all nice and dandy. Great, cool message, fine. But what I love about it is that she even learns that, you know, sometimes nature has to kind of take care of itself in a lot of ways. Or uh pretty early on, she tries to help um another beaver from getting attacked or eaten by a bear, and hilariously everyone's like, whoa, whoa, whoa, what are you doing? That's against the rules. Like sometimes animals have to get eaten by other animals. And I kind of love that as a realization. So it wasn't just environment is great and everyone else is wrong. Like she was trying to be like an activist, and even like the politician, you know, wasn't the most evil, evil cartoonist guy either, which I kind of like too.

SPEAKER_01

Mm-hmm. Yeah, and and um, like she wants to save this uh glade, and actually the animals are like, we just moved. Yeah, it's like you know, we just gotta move.

SPEAKER_02

I love Bobby Moynihan in it as the the king beaver.

SPEAKER_01

Yep, it's so good.

SPEAKER_02

There's that great moment again. I joke that I went, Oh wow, I'm surprised they did that, where she's talking to him and he's like, Oh, you know, this happens all the time. Look, I'm flattered, but I'm taken, and you are way too young for me. Oh, it's so good. Yeah, I I really liked hoppers.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, definitely. Yeah, because like in general, I don't get uh as excited for Pixar films as I used to. Yeah. But um, yeah, like this one's one, definitely check out if you can.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. Well, alright, so in the end, I only had six goats, which were Toy Story 2, Monsters Inc., Incredibles, Coco, Wally, and Inside Out was my final Goats ranking. I only had one movie in the gross, which was the Good Dinosaur, because that movie's not good. Um But Ricky, you how many did you have in your elite category?

SPEAKER_01

I had eleven in elite. Um I had six in great. And then I had seven in good. So I mean, like, to me, almost, you know, half are e elite.

SPEAKER_02

So I mean, you know, it's twenty-four out of the thirty films you had good or higher. Like, that's pretty good. Yeah. And some films you haven't seen, so you really didn't dislike a lot of them.

SPEAKER_01

No, no, and I mean it it is just like picks are still like very strong. It's not going away. They know w they know what they're doing.

SPEAKER_02

Well, with that, we hope you all go see Toy Story 5. Maybe I'll watch four and then watch five and we'll catch up on it. Uh, I know they also have Gato coming out in 2027, and Incredibles 3 has a 2028 release date as of right now. Who knows? Maybe we'll get uh maybe Incredibles will make a bounce back. We'll definitely have a follow-up if they do. But uh Ricky, any final thoughts on Pixar?

SPEAKER_01

No, um go catch up on the uh recent ones, even if you've fell off. You you might be surprised like I was. Yes. Um and you might find some that you really enjoy.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, absolutely. Well, thank you for listening to another episode of a Mostly Film Podcast. I've been Brandon. With me, as always, is Ricky, and please go watch some movies.

SPEAKER_00

Bye.
