So then uh all of a sudden you get this uh grand idea. You know what? I'm gonna sell coffee.

Where did that come about?

I just like the lifestyle. Okay. A buddy of mine. I met I met a buddy, I met um the owner of Mila Coffee, which is Marco, like a long time ago. Uh-huh. And that was through writings with my other friend, whose name was Mikey. So we would we would wake up like at 5 a.m. We would meet like around six and we'd go ride in the morning. Just us two. It was like a common thing we did weekly, like daily or once a week, or this some shit. You said 5 a.m. Yeah, I wake up like at 5, start writing by 6, and then like by the time we were like halfway done or done with it, his coffee shop was open, which was around 6 37. So I didn't know anything about coffee back then, like at all. It's like a long, like maybe a decade ago, maybe 12 years. I don't know. I I the time frames uh to me, it just really just blends together everything. But anyways, I met him, he's a really good friend of mine till this day. And um, I just like the lifestyle, you know. I liked it, and it was just something that was embedded in me, and I was like, man, I kind of like this. Like, explain the lifestyle to me. You just you're making coffee for people in the morning who are all who are in a good mood. Like when who's ever really in a bad mood getting coffee? Nobody, like, and I like talking to people. You know, I like talking, like I could talk, I could talk with a storm, like I could just continue yapping about fucking anything as long as I like the person.

It's getting you to shut up. That's the trick.

That's the hard part. Nah, but it's like, yeah, and it's like, yeah, I just like talking to people, and these are simple conversations. Some people share what they want to share, some people share a lot, some people share a little bit. It's okay, like no judgment zone. And we don't like you know, repeat what they tell us. We don't do any of that. We're just we're just there to chat. Dude, sell coffee and chat.

Well, tell me, tell me the difference, obviously, between a morning person and uh uh another uh regular per dude who doesn't get up in the morning. Do you see like a direct difference? I try and be a morning person now, and I never was before.

Well, I think I'm not too sure about the later day people because like those though, my only perception of people that wake up later, if you wake them up earlier, they're grumpy. Grumpy. Like that's just what they are. Like they don't like being woken up like four, five, six, seven in the morning to do what they gotta do. They're they're gonna be grumpy, you know what I mean? True. It's the same thing for a morning person at like 5, 6, 7, 8 p.m. We're we're a little uh agitated already. Like I'm I'm up at like 5 a.m. every day, I'm up at 5 30 a.m., maybe 6 a.m. the latest, but that's every day. What time do you go to sleep? Uh not a good sleep schedule. Anywhere from like I can fall asleep anywhere from nine to like one in the morning, but I'm always up by six. Yep. No matter what.

And it's I think I remember me and you were similar when it came to that. Yeah, remember we'd always be called late.

I'm always up, and I'm I'm a night person, but I'm also a morning person, so it's like a double-edged sword. It's like, where do I want to invest my time? Like in my actual like because sometimes late at night I'll get good ideas. I'll start like designing stuff because I design jerseys and stuff and all that, you know, for cycling and stuff with um my team, good speed racing. We've been around for like over 10 years, it's so much fun. Like, all these guys are bad at they all either like have their own business or they're gonna start their own business, or they're like they're all entrepreneurs too, and they like to do what they like to do, and it's like, but that's beside the point. But anyways, like how do you where do you want to invest? Like, do you want to be really productive at night when no one's around? And it's like you can get a lot done if you just have that motivation, or in the morning when the same thing, no one's really up, and you can do whatever you want.

I love the mornings, man, because like I get a whole lot done, and then it's like, man, I still have the whole day.

Dude, that's that's what my thing was, too. I'd I'd wake up, it'd be like five, six in the morning. I'd be like 30, 50, 70, 80, 100 miles, 100 miles deep before noon. And then I go home, I take a nap, and then I have the afternoon. I still have the afternoon.

It's funny that you said because I do too, man. I'll take a nap and I'm still.

Yeah, I still want to go out there. Hell yeah. And that's the fun part, too, is because like in the morning, there's not a lot of distractions, there's not a lot of anything else. Like, it's it's really up to you. Like, what do you want to do today? Um let me focus on this and let me get that done.

They were they were talking to uh Ray Allen this one time, and he was saying, Well, if you can impart anything on you know the future generation of NBA players, basketball players, you know, what what would it be? And this was like so simple, dude. He was like, go to sleep early. He was just like, if you go to sleep early and then you wake up early, he was like, everything will fall in place, like from then on out. He was just like, and everybody wants to party, everybody wants to go chill, everybody wants to go, yeah, everybody uh wants to go drink. I was just talking about in my last podcast with my buddy Anthony. I was like, man, millionaires, you know, they are they're 5 a.m.ers and 7-4 a.m.ers and stuff like that. Not all of them, but most of them. And I was you know me, man. I've been, you know, a night night out my whole life, you know. That's when like I was leaving. I would, dude, I would leave my apartment or whatever, like at nine, 10 o'clock. That's when I was leaving, like to go do whatever I was gonna do. Right. So um I was just used to that, and I would have a natural, like, I am a night person, like, like definitely. And even now, bro, that I just I stay home, I don't, I don't go out anymore. But my like my um not competitive juices, but my um, what's the word I'm looking for? Imagine like my like my imagination and everything starts running wild at night. Yeah, and I start thinking of things and I start thinking of business plans, I start thinking about things that I want to do, and I start kind of like um scheduling out the day for the next day or or whatnot. But yeah, it's it's uh I don't know why it's it goes in the see what I mean.

It's just it it's cool how that it's cool how that works. I kind of I like it. I just like I just like it. Sometimes I'll be up like at two or three in the morning because I have an idea. Okay, so and I might not even use it, but I just do it and I'm like, damn, that shit sucks. I'm like, dude, I just spent four hours doing that. Hey, uh, I was like, I guess I'll try later.

I call it kind of like looking under rocks, you know, like if you're trying to find something or like, oh, maybe this is gonna work or whatnot. But okay, so then tell me, um, so obviously you like the lifestyle, and you know, what what made you think like this is what I want to do?

It I mean, cycling and coffee go hand in hand. Does it? Regardless. Really? It just goes hand in hand.

Like, do a lot of people drink? Are they drinkers too? Uh I know like there's like pub runs and stuff like that.

And I was I was wondering, like, do they um yeah, there's there's I think that's a little bit of everything in every community. True. I mean, we don't for earlier in the days, yeah, we just like ride to like bars after a ride and just drink, or like a social ride and just drink and stuff like that. But I think for the most part, it's just it's just normal stuff, like it's the same thing you would get in any other true freaking group.

Yeah, there's some basketball leagues that like yeah, everybody drinks after.

But yeah, for some people, that's like their getaway, man. They're freaking working 10, 12 hours a day, and then they get to play basketball. Of course, you're gonna want to drink a beer, you know? Dude, uh, yeah.

Some of my buddies, man, they'll drink a beer at like halftime and shit. Yeah, yeah, it's pretty rowdy, dude. So I was like, yeah, but I'm yeah, I'm just yeah, that's not my thing. But I was in this uh co-ed basketball league, and it was it was pretty cool because it was over there, golly, I forgot what bar that was. And it was it was a badass gym that was behind that bar, so every time we would just go and hang out after, and then the people from the league would go and hang out.

Socializing, man. You pretty much have some type of socializing. You go crazy without that. Yep, for sure. No matter what you do, you socialize even if it's a couple of friends.

Like, just I try and get my man over here to go somewhere, man, but he likes to do everything at home, likes to work out at home, likes to do everything at home. And I'm just like, dude, like I think, dude, like human- He doesn't like putting up with people, maybe.

No, well, that that's like putting up with putting up with like loud people, obnoxious people, like just people trying to do their shit. It's like, yeah, I get like I get that way too. I'm just like, dude, I I can either stay in or go out, and people will be annoying to me.

Like well, no, no, I get it. I get it. But at the same time, too, dude, I think um humans, you know, obviously naturally we're uh you know, we're connected, we're a connected species or or whatnot. So isolating yourself is just not good, you know.

Do you uh are you isolating yourself? Like, do you feel like you're isolating yourself, or do you think it's more of like uh just a personality?

I don't I don't feel like I'm isolating myself. I that's the thing, I don't feel that way. I feel like I'm choosing my piece, kind of. You know what I'm saying? That's a good way to put it. It's like I just I don't know.

What I want him to see though is just like um, I mean, it's not like if he's never seen it before, but I wanted to go to like basketball games, I want him to go to boxing matches, I wanted to go to um, you know, concerts and things like that because it's like I don't know, that's my thing. I just love the interaction and I can feel the energy. I can feel the energy off of people. Oh, yeah, you know. So whenever I'm at a show, especially that's what makes me feel like the most home being at shows or whatnot. And um, I could feel it, and we're all kind of feeling the same thing, and we're all happy. You know what I'm saying?

Oh bro, it's that's I mean, that's what we did when we were kids. Yeah, and then I I keep on trying to explain people to explain to people what it was like watching these bands at The Rabbit. Oh, and I'll talk about it over and over again, and it was just like and that pocket in time, that music people don't get it, they don't get like the energy, they don't get the feeling, they don't get like they don't get the craziness of it.

Because what I mean, even on the out even right now, if you were just to like take a step back and look at the whole thing in a genre, shit's crazy, bro. Like it's crazy. Everybody in the front's getting smushed to death, like they can't even breathe, but they're there having fun, and then the dudes in the middle fucking knocking each other's teeth out, and it's like getting concussions and shit.

And then if you if you were to hear a band like the chariot, it's like yeah, what?

They yeah, but it's like it would the like even the keys are in. I'm like, it doesn't make any sense or whatnot, but yeah, you gotta know the hardcore, the hardcore uh genre and the lifestyle or whatnot. So when everybody's together, it's just like a cohesive thing. Yeah, I don't know, man. I I love it.

And show too. The last the last show I went to was I went to two of the last shows I went to was Super Heaven. If you never heard of them, listen to them. They're they're they're pretty badass. What style are they? It's more like uh shoe gaze, it's like a new type of thing, shoe gaze. Okay, so they're pretty dope. They remind me sometimes of like Deftones and some other bands. Oh, cool. They don't sing all horny, but they don't sing all horny like Deftones, but they're they're they're badass. If you if you were to jam them, I'm pretty sure you'll find like one or two songs. And then uh Esteban actually gave me a ticket for my birthday. Oh, that's when I saw them.

And you sent me a picture and you were like, check out the line, and it was like all the way around the block. A buddy of mine, I believe he worked there or he worked the doors for him, or he did the audio or something like that. And I messaged him and I was like, Hey, do you think you get us in? He's like, Hey no way, man. It's like this show's packed. Like, he's like, There's a no way. I have no pool here. Both of them, bro, together.

That's like obviously they're both they're they're both headliners or whatnot. So anyway, so then um then you start thinking to yourself, obviously, okay, I can get my what is it called, bro? Like, you just make sure it's not hot, the surface isn't hot or it hasn't been a hot day. You get some Windex, spray the spray it, and then just wipe it all down. Comes out like super mare. Like, you don't really have to do anything. I thought it was gonna be a hassle. Like, I thought I was gonna have to polish it and polish it. It's been two years. It still looks like that.

Oh yeah, yeah, yeah. You've seen I've seen it. Yeah, that's my host. So Jose leads that ride, he's my my partner, and um yeah, everyone parks there, and then you just stop there, and then we we spread it out between other like other uh shops in San Antonio, like Mila will do it from there, and then we've done they've done rides from every from elsewhere too, so it's like it's not more of a like gatekeeping thing, like oh, the rides belong to us. It's more of a like, oh let's go around town, fucking bring everybody out from different parts of town to come ride with us. It's like a community vibe. Yeah, okay. Yeah, it's it's it's a Sunday ride. Sometimes it gets crazy from what I hear. I haven't been on it in forever working, but yeah, it's fun, dude. It's like there's just a whole aspect of it. Like you just get you done with your ride, either drink coffee, and then they'll drink beer there. Oh, cool. Like two y'all serve beer too? Nah, we don't we don't have a license for it, but you could drink beer and you could chill, like chill next to the shop where everybody's posted up. Yeah, everybody's posted up around the area. Nice. Like it's like two weeks, just like two weeks ago, we just fucking got hammered out in front of the shop with a bunch of homies, and it was like six. We closed at one, mind you. It was like six p.m. when we stopped fucking like drinking. I was like, doing a lot of things. Yeah, like I gotta take this fucking thing home. It's like I gotta home, go, no, no, no, we we we leave it there. Oh, okay, cool. Yeah, we'd suppose to take to take it home and to drive it and stuff, dude. That'd be imp that's like impossible. Oh, for real? Yeah, because you have you have all the equipment, you have all the like stuff in the fridge, you have all your ingredients everywhere. Like, imagine like you'd have to strap everything out every morning, take it, unstrap everything, set everything up, you know what I mean? It's there's just not it's not really something that's easy to do.

When you um when you so when you're opening this business and okay, obviously you're selling coffee or whatnot, what do you think sets you guys apart, y'all's coffee, from anybody else's?

Uh, there's a there's a bunch of things. Um going down to the basics, it's uh our every like what we provide, which is you know, coffee, espresso, beans, roasted locally, right down the street. Literally gets the best stuff, you know, calls us up, which one do you want? Sometimes I'll bring it by taste tested. Really good guy, breakaway coffee from his name's Justin from Breakaway Coffee Co. Uh, he does a really good job at curating his beans. He always does like a light to mid roast. None of this stuff is oily, like not hating on people that go to Starbucks, Dutch Bros, and stuff. But you're paying $7 for a cup of coffee that the beans were in a factory sitting for probably months in oil, over roasted, and you're paying a premium price when you have so many coffee shops around the corner. Think about it that way as like you're going to like a high-end restaurant to get a big Mac. That's what you're doing. You're paying a high-end price to get a Big Mac. You could you could taste the difference big time.

It's a big difference. Like, if you were to smell the two differences from what if the people that were buying Starbucks actually smelled or Dutch Bros or anything actually smelled the beans that they were gonna about to consume, they would probably not want to drink that cup of coffee. I can guarantee it. Like it's it's it's not a good taste, bro. It's not a good smell, anything, but then again, that's that's the commercial industry. Like you're just commercializing, selling coffee, you know, knock them out, knock them out, knock them out. Cheap, the cheapest ingredients.

Like uh well, I I'm glad you set that analogy kind of like a Big Mac because it's like, is that even meat? Who knows?

Yeah, it's not. It's probably not. Like it's it's cardboard. You know what I mean though, right? You're paying seven bucks a call. You're paying seven bucks for a cup of coffee from a corporation that doesn't give a fuck about you, and hardly less about their workers when you could go to a local spot around the corner that's getting their shit fresh like us weekly, putting it in their hopper, that's making sure like all our water's clean, everything's clean, and you're supporting a family. I was gonna say you're all about the revolution, right, bro?

Uh does uh also, too, like I would assume that the different beans and all that does it give you like a different kick?

Yeah, oh it definitely does. Yeah, like uh do you feel a little bit more amped up on y'all's life? Simple. Our stuff is pretty good. I really like it. Like, I mean, that's one serving. This one's great. Which one was this one called? That one was uh it was a coconut caramel ice latte um with oat milk. That was dope. So, like, and then even that, so like there's a lot of thought that goes into this, right? Like the oat milk we put in our drinks is um it doesn't have like specific ingredients that are linked to causing cancer. I think it's like rhapseed oil or something like that, that a lot of other oat milk brands do.

And then like our even our ice, we have an ice machine that we put like alkaline water in. Nice that produces the ice, so it that's just even cleaner. Like it's everything's in the controlled, you know, controlled distance. Same thing for our coffee machine. We got like fucking $500 filter system for the water that goes into our coffee machine, and then mind you, that is we still put alkaline water in the water, so it's just hella clean water, you know what I mean? And we service our machine all the time. We are our our bugging beans are weekly roasted, and then we just let them sit to de-gas for like the one to two weeks and we put them in. It's quality, bro. Yeah, it's quality. It's like you don't think that much goes into it. Well, well, that's what I was about to say. It is, and then we make the syrups in house. Like, I make that like we use like natural ingredients with like extracts, nothing with like preservatives in it, anything like that. There's probably only like three or four ingredients in that syrup that we use versus like going and getting a pump from somebody that bought it for sure, and like and then matcha. Do you drink matcha ex matcha matcha? Anybody? Not yet. I haven't tried it. I haven't tried it. I haven't tried it. It's a green, it's a green tea. Oh, okay. It's the same concept, caffeine, really clean, has a lot of antioxidants. It's actually really good for you. You're not supposed to drink it before you're gonna eat something though, because it'll rob the iron from that. Oh, and so that's a different that's a different topic, but it's totally safe to just consume whatever you want. But even ours, like um, I don't know if you remember her, Vanessa from South Sand. Vanessa Vanessa, I forgot her last name, but she has a brand called T Ness now. So she's been doing that for like six, I don't I don't know, I really don't know how long. I'm gonna say eight years, eight, ten years. So she went to our high school, she supplies our matcha. Oh, cool, and she the matcha she gets is from a farm in Japan. Whoa, and so it's so it's she's been working with this single farm in Japan for freaking so many years. It's quality, it's a hella quality. And so when you get the matcha, you're supposed to whisk it, right? You put I'd be able to leave like an ounce of water, whisk it at a certain temperature. I forgot what I forget what it's at, or it's just at the perfect temperature. So I never really have to check. So you whisk it by hand, you know, you pour it over whatever you want, you put whatever flavor you want in it. Some people just use regular milk, oat milk, whatever, and then you just drink it, has caffeine in it, makes you feel it actually makes you feel really good. Like for me, it makes my stomach feel good. I don't know why. But the whole thing about it too is like, even in that, like when you're going to like Starbucks or like you go to like Dutch Pros and you get a matcha, what they do is they'll batch it. So they'll put a bunch like in a bowl and they'll make a whole bunch, maybe not even by hand, because you're supposed to do it by hand. But people use like a frother and other stuff like that, which is totally fine, do whatever you want, but we're not gonna do that. Anyways, they do it and they batch it by like batches, like tubs. And then when you go, you're getting a you're paying seven dollars for a matcha that was made the day before that's coming out of a tub from the fridge. How does that make you feel about paying seven dollars for a drink that was made not fresh? You know what I mean? Yeah, it's kind of funny. It's like why would you it's just something that they and I'm not knocking people that do it. No, for sure. They have their reasons for sure, but I'm just saying we'll never do it.

Well, not only that, man, but it's just right down the street, like you said.

Yeah, the same you there's probably one right around the corner. And if you're gonna get a coffee, please go to them because they're they have a family to support, you know what I mean? It's like stick it to the man. Don't go to Starbucks, they're probably giving you the worst, cheapest ingredients. They don't fucking care. The people they're paying hourly might love their job, they might not. You never know. But if you go to like a homegrown business, it's kind of like, well, they must they have to like what they do, they have to be good at what they do, or else it's not gonna be a good product, they're not gonna survive.

You know, it's our survival, they're hourly. What would you say is the biggest lesson that you've learned being a business owner now?

I don't know, there's a lot. Anything that sticks out in particular?
