In Appalachia, people acknowledge there are unknown things that attach themselves and they don't leave. Not when they're supposed to. Not when the door is closed. Not when the light comes on. They linger. You don't always see them, but you feel them. In a place that suddenly feels wrong. In water that doesn't behave the way it should. In the quiet moment when something shifts, and you can't explain why. But you know something's there. They have a name for that. Not quite a ghost, not quite something you can prove, just something that stays. And once it's there, it doesn't let go. And sometimes it doesn't stay in stories. Sometimes it shows up in the water.

SpeakerHere's the thing about Appalachia: the land and the river aren't unattached things. They are living and breathing, spoken of almost as though they were human. They are characters in a story. And there is a deep-seated belief that those who harm the land or the river will that the land and the river will reclaim what rightly belongs to them in time. A form of earthly justice in God's country. And these people, so well acquainted with their surroundings by necessity, have words to describe those unknown things that interfere in a dark way, things that follow and attach and won't leave. Appalachians call them haints. If you're not familiar with the word, it's close to haunt, but still different. And if you've been here long enough, you learn not to dismiss what you cannot explain. Because this isn't a place where the unexplained is rare. People here have seen things. Strange lights moving on the hills. Creatures that don't fit neatly into any field guide. Stories passed down that never quite fade. Things other places might argue about. Here they are just part of the landscape. This is a region shaped by layers. Industry, yes, but also something older. Ancient ground, burial mounds, places that held meaning long before anyone thought to test the water. And whether you believe those stories or not, they all point to the same instinct that not everything that exists here can be easily explained. And not everything that lingers is easily seen. Appalachians don't run from haints. They learn to live around them. They adjust, they adapt, they make space for something they never asked for, because leaving isn't always an option. Resist the urge to tune this out because this is the part of the story most people miss.
While a silent killer made its way from secret wartime laboratories onto a rural West Virginian landscape, it wasn't something that broke down. It wasn't something the body could process and remove. This was a synthetic compound, a perfluorinated chemical used in the production of materials like Teflon, engineered to resist heat, resist water, resist degradation. It doesn't burn off, it doesn't dissolve away. In the human body, it doesn't pass through. Its half-life isn't measured in hours or days, but in years. Not leaving, not breaking down, just staying. And once this invisible menace escaped, it didn't stay where it was put. It moved through water, through soil, through the cattle that lived there, and eventually beyond the places anyone was paying attention to. These people already knew how to live with something they couldn't explain. There are rules for that. Unspoken, but understood. Watch what doesn't behave right. Don't trust what looks normal but isn't. Learn the shape of danger, even when no one names it. Some noticed. Something was off in a way you could feel before you could prove. And there's something else people here will tell you, not loudly like a warning, just like it's a fact. The land keeps core. The river remembers. And sooner or later it takes back what has been taken. Appalachians don't run from the end of pine, they live around it. So when the first clues began to surface near the Washington Works plant, almost no one understood how long the problem had been building.
But if anyone had a sense of that longevity, it was the people of the hills. The deaths of Wilbur Tennant's cattle raised questions, but those questions didn't stop at the fence line. They led somewhere else. Somewhere buried, inside Dupont's own records. The attorney representing Wilbur Tennant was Rob Bilott. And at first, the situation looked rather small. A farmer, a landfill, a local dispute. But when the lot asked for documents, what came back wasn't small. It was a flood. Boxes, stacks of paper, decades of internal records. And between 2000 and 2002, that flood became something else entirely. One hundred and sixty-five thousand documents. Not organized to explain anything, not arranged to tell a story. Just there. Like something waiting. And it's worth saying that kind of volume isn't neutral. A flood like that can overwhelm, bury the signal and noise, make it harder to see what matters. That's what it's designed to do. But that is not what happened. Because somewhere inside it, something had been sitting there a long time. Not gone, not obvious, just present. These documents weren't organized to reveal anything. They were dense, technical, fragmented, full of language designed to contain meaning, not release it. And the person reading them wasn't an outsider. He was a corporate defense attorney from Cincinnati, someone who understood how companies communicate risk. He knew what he was looking at even when it wasn't being set outright. Because someone else could have read those same pages and seen nothing. Nothing unusual. Nothing actionable. But he could see the pattern. The way concern surfaced and then disappeared. The way the most important information never stayed in one place. It moved. And around here, there's a word for something that moves like that. A hate. But even before the pattern fully emerged, there was another problem. The names didn't match. C8 PFOA APFO FC143. Different names for the same thing. A synthetic compound that does not exist in nature, designed to move through systems without breaking down. And the corporation was using code words. And
then there was a decision made in the newsroom. We called it what DuPont called it C8. And that decision muddied the waters. Scientists called it PFOA or perfluorooctanoic acid. Later PFOS. And forever chemicals. That fracture didn't just confuse the record, it buried it. Because you can't detect a poison if you don't know what to look for. And if no one knows what to test for, how would anyone ever know it's there? But Rob Bilott didn't get stuck on names. He found something else. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency had already taken an interest in a substance DuPont had been dumping at the dry run landfill adjacent to the Tennant farm. And once he pulled that thread, everything started to come loose. Because this wasn't just contamination, it was movement. Waste pulled from the production of Teflon, laced with PFOA, dumped into unlined landfills, and it didn't stay put. It leached into groundwater, into private wells,
into public water systems. Inside the company, they already knew and had for some time. And looking back at the volume of what was produced, it's hard not to ask about that flood of paper and what it was meant to do. Overwhelm, obscure. Because by 1984, corporate decision makers understood something they couldn't unknow. This chemical could not be contained. It was already in the water. Lubeck, Little Hocking. They knew because they had been looking for it. Sampling drinking water, testing blood. And what they found was already inside people. Because PFOA doesn't pass through the body quickly. It builds, remaining there for years. And before that, information had already begun to surface. Internal findings, external research, signals that this chemical was not behaving the way it was supposed to. Data that didn't fit the narrative of no human health effects and couldn't be easily explained away. Results that raised questions, the kind that don't go away once you see them, the kind that alarmed the people who understand what they mean. But production didn't stop. By 1984, the corporate decision makers knew, and they made a decision to wait and see. Because eliminating the chemical was not economically attractive. And that's the moment everything changes. Because now this isn't something that happened. This is something that was allowed to continue. It moved through soil and groundwater into creeks, into the Ohio River and beyond the state line. And once it entered the river, it didn't stop. But no one was looking for it there. Forever chemicals don't leave. And around here, people have always known. Some things don't wash away. They stay like a hate. The documents revealed contamination, but more than that, they revealed knowledge and silence. And by the time anyone understood what they were looking at, it wasn't new. It had already been here for years. What was meant to overwhelm, what was meant to bury the truth, did something else. It preserved it. Because once you know how to look, you can't unsee it. And at Appalachia, people don't run from things that linger. They learn to live around them. And by the time we understood what we were living with, we already had. It was in the water. It was in the soil. It was in us. Not gone, not fading. Still here. Lingering.
