But what if that wasn't the beginning of the story? What if it was the symptom?

week we are meandering about 20 miles south of the tenant farm in West Virginia along the Ohio River, because an emerging situation there is prompting a layered look at the land, its history, and its legacy of contamination. Some may say this is a story about a monster. Others are inclined to believe it's a story about what happens when something invisible enters the environment, and no one knows how to see it. Whatever it is, it's all part of the same ecosystem. A place with prehistoric significance is changed, forever altered by war. And the people who live here feel the effects long before they are measured. Many of those effects are lingering still. Before it was a wildlife refuge, before it was a place of legend, it was war. Just outside Point Pleasant, West Virginia, in Mason County, the West Virginia Ordnance Works was built in a rush of urgency. A sprawling industrial complex, thousands of acres, hundreds of structures dedicated to one purpose to produce TNT for World War II. This was patriotic work, necessary work. No one asked what it left behind. Because you didn't question survival. The process itself was chemical, violent, unstable, exacting. Toilene treated with nitric and sulfuric acid, layer by layer, nitrated into something explosive, and every step produced waste. Acidic, toxic, persistent, disposed of in lagoons, buried in the ground, left behind when the war ended in 1945. The machinery stopped, but the chemistry didn't. In order to mitigate the impacts of the inevitable catastrophes involved with a DMT explosives facility, sixty concrete igloos were built for the dual purpose of containing damage and also because from the sky, Germans flying overhead could mistake them for ancient Indian burial mounds. By the 1960s, the site had gone quiet, the igloos abandoned. Reclaimed on paper, but the land held memory. Ponds with strange colors, areas where nothing grew quite right, water no one tested, and everywhere, those concrete domes. Silent, hollow, echoing, and fascinating. People went there because it was empty. But they didn't come back unchanged. They described something. Movement in the trees, a presence, something watching them. It was November twelfth, nineteen sixty six. Two young couples are parking at the old TNT site when they see it. A large figure with wings that appear to be tangled in the fence, eyes that reflect red in the headlights. It rises and follows their car all the way back to town. The report is taken seriously by members of law enforcement who immediately go looking for this thing. More reports follow. Not identical, but close enough. Always at night, near the TNT area. Always those red eyes. No one says chemical exposure or hints at environmental contamination. There is no language for that. So they call it something else. Something older. Something that makes sense of fear. A creature.
Industrial environments change perception. Low-level chemical exposure combined with isolation, darkness, and stress can alter visual interpretation, sensory processing, emotional response, not dramatically or obviously, but enough. Enough to make something ordinary feel wrong. Enough to make the unknown feel alive. And once one person says they saw something, others begin to look for it. And once they look, they find it. Not because it's there in the way they think, but because something is happening and they're trying to understand. December 15, 1967. The Silver Bridge collapses, fails during rush hour. An eye bar fractures, the structure gives way. Thirty cars fall into the river. Forty-six people dying. And suddenly everything connects. The sightings, the fear, the thing in the woods. It wasn't just something strange. It was a warning. That's how the story settles. That's how meaning is made. Because randomness is hard to live with. Far harder than a pattern. Even if the pattern isn't real. This is where the story changes. Because there was something in those woods. Maybe not a creature. Chemistry. Residual TNT compounds. Acid waste. Industrial byproducts left without containment, leaching into soil, moving through groundwater, remaining for decades unremediated. And the people living nearby, they had no idea. No warning. No testing. No explanation. Just a feeling that something wasn't right. Because this isn't the only time this has happened. We've seen this before, and we are still seeing it now. With perfluoroctinoic acid. CH, a forever chemical. Invisible, persistent, everywhere. In water, blood, in the bodies of people who've never consented. At first there's no language, just symptoms, confusion, dismissal, and then, years later, recognition. So what was the Mothman? Some say it was not a creature, but a signal, a community sensing that something had changed without the tools to explain it. Turning to story because science hadn't caught up yet, because regulation hadn't caught up yet, because no one had told them what had been left behind. There are many theories.

The plan on the table is a proposal to build, of all things, a data center. On land that has never been fully remediated, never fully studied, and never fully understood. The TNT site near Point Pleasant isn't just another parcel of land. It's layered with chemicals, history, stories people don't quite know how to explain. We know there was contamination. We know there are questions that were never fully answered. And we know, because people still talk about it quietly, carefully, that there have been sightings. Things seen in patries, things crossing the road, things that don't quite resolve when you try to look straight at them. Whether you believe those stories or not, they come from somewhere. And places like this, places with that kind of history, they deserve to be studied thoroughly, honestly, before anything new is built on top of them. But that is not what's happening. Instead, the plan moves forward as if the past is settled and the future has already been decided. But there's a moment before the headlines, before the machinery, before the fences go up, when a place is still what it has always been. And then quietly the paperwork begins. If you're paying attention, you can catch it there. Not in the news, not in an announcement, but in a public notice buried on a state website, in a PDF no one reads. This is where practical magic comes in. So if something is coming to a place like this, the first question isn't what's being built. The first question is who has the power to say yes? Because it's never just one entity. It could be the county commission, it could be state regulators. And here, because of what's already in the ground, it almost certainly involves federal oversight. Agencies like the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and
the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection are already part of the story, whether anyone is talking about it or not. And once you know who holds the authority, you know where to start looking. Because permits, they are public, technically. But they are not easy to find unless you know how. You start with the West Virginia DEP public notices. You look for air permits because data centers run on backup diesel. You look for water permits because cooling systems don't run on nothing. You look for stormwater permits because disturbing land like this always has consequences. And you watch for certain language. Notice of intent, draft permit, public comment period. That's where the real story begins. Because if you wait for the headline, you're already too late. And sometimes there isn't a permit yet, just a rumor. That's when you work backwards. Who owns the land? Has it changed hands recently? Are there consultants attached? Engineering firms, quiet partnerships. Because big projects, they don't just appear, they leave a trail. And if you follow it carefully enough, you can see what's coming before it arrives. Now, here's where this becomes something more than observation. This is where it becomes participation. When a permit is proposed, there's a window, a public comment period, sometimes 30 days, sometimes less. And this is where most people assume it doesn't matter. It does. Because when you submit a comment, a real one, grounded in the actual permit, the agency is required to respond. Which means your words become part of the record. So if this were your land, if this were your water, if this were your question to ask, you might say something like, has a full environmental assessment
been conducted on this site, including legacy contamination? How does this project account for what is already in the soil and groundwater? What long-term monitoring will be required, and who will be responsible for it? Why is development being considered for full remediation or study is complete? Those aren't opinions. And if those answers aren't easy to find or aren't being offered at all, there's another tool. The Freedom of Information Act or FOIA. Emails, internal reports, communications between agencies and developers. And sometimes that's where the real story lives. And then there's one last thing. It sounds small, but it matters more than it should. You show up county meetings, planning boards, public hearings. Because decisions get quieter the fewer people are in the room. In places like this, places with a history like this should never be quiet. Out there. People still tell stories about things they've seen, about things that don't quite belong. Maybe that's focal. Maybe it's memory. Maybe it's something else entirely. But either way, it's a reminder that not everything buried stays buried. Places like the TNT sites don't just become
something new overnight. They change slowly through filings, permits, paperwork most people never see. But if you know where to look, you can watch it happen in real time. And sometimes, if enough people are paying attention, you can change what happens next. Because this story isn't over. Not even close.
