Welcome to your Morning Berthoud Brief - delivering the latest local news, upcoming events, and noteworthy happenings to keep you connected to the community.
Good morning, birthed, and happy Monday. We hope you all had a great holiday weekend. Welcome back to your morning birth brief. I'm your host, Trent Bootish. Let's get into it. The three firefighters killed in the Snyder Fire west of Grand Junction last month were remembered and honored during a memorial service on Sunday. Federal firefighters Emily Barker, 38, Nick Hutcherson, 27, and Sidney Watson, also 27 years of age, were tragically killed June 27th fighting the more than 30,000 acre wildfire on the Colorado-Utah state line. We at the Birth Beat want to thank Emily, Nick, and Sydney and their families for their sacrifice while fighting to protect the rest of us. A big shout out to all the firefighters as they continue to keep communities like ours safe. Next up, Bertha Community Library is making some changes to its HVAC system, which will change how the library functions for a while. Most afternoon and evening programs will be relocated to nonprofit organizations and businesses throughout the community. Make sure to check the library event page for more information. When the National Weather Service forecasts a high temperature of 94 degrees or above, staffing inside the library will be reduced beginning at 4 p.m. When the forecasted high reaches 97 degrees or above, the library will close at 4 p.m. These temporary adjustments are designed to maintain library services whenever possible while safeguarding the health and well-being of library staff. Hang in there, everyone. Speaking of heat, July is National UV Safety Awareness Month. Ultraviolet rays penetrate the skin and damage the DNA and skin cells, triggering mutations that cause cells to grow uncontrollably and form malignant tumors, according to Cancer Research UK. This is a reminder to wear sunscreen, folks. It should be applied at least every two hours when outdoors. However, you must reapply it immediately after swimming, heavy sweating, or towel drying. Protect the skin you're in. Well, everybody, that's all for your Monday morning brief. This has been Trent Buddhist signing off. Have a great day, Berthid, and we'll talk to y'all tomorrow.
