SPEAKER_04Mine mine was kind of up. I don't know how to explain it because there was a lot of I don't know. I like I I jokingly call it babysitting, but we're escorting the contractors. We have to let them in certain doors. We have fobs, key fobs, and all that. Um new cameras being put in. New can new cameras being put in. Um so I did a lot of uh escorting slash babysitting slash on my phone slash letting I'm glad I brought a charger. Type of days. Yeah. I mean what? You didn't hear that, Dean. If you're listening, no phones, no phones at work. No, he's cool as hell. Yeah. He's a cool boss. Louisiana boy. Hell yeah. Straight. Do you know where from he's straight? I forgot exactly the city and the county. I need to ask the county, the parish.

Um what um is that the job you want to talk about? Probably not, right? And um let's talk about a different one. You know, maybe a past work experience that you enjoyed or didn't enjoy.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. Um let's see. How many jobs? I've worked at two pizza places. I've worked at y'all's pizza place. I don't know, I can't remember if y'all named it or not, if y'all decided to keep it on the worked everywhere.
SPEAKER_04I mean, we talked about it enough. We all we said was if you know, you know, that there's roaches in the kitchen. But you worked there? I didn't know you worked there.

SPEAKER_03But they but they wouldn't uh they wouldn't let you like eat the candies, the little candies that we kept? They wouldn't let you, the employee, eat them? Yeah, we couldn't eat them, so I would sneak eat them. I'd have to like secretly and we couldn't like sit down or anything, and I would just like to sneak one in the little little mouth there.

SPEAKER_03Yeah, I also my parents didn't want me to work there because it was so far from the house and they didn't want to pick me up and drop me off. Um and in my rebellious teenage years, I said, Well, I'm still gonna work here because y'all told me I had to get a job. And so I rode my bike like six miles there and back every day that I worked.
SPEAKER_06That's some commitment. That's fucking nuts.

SPEAKER_06You were a team that was in her like high school?

SPEAKER_03All right. Oh, Lil Caesars, man. You want to talk about dirty pizza places? Oh boy. Um that place is atrocious. That's um it's it's a fun, you know, it's a fun job because it's like, you know, they just hire anybody.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_03And it's just a bunch of crackheads. Uh interesting. We had this one guy who like wasn't in the military, but he was this crackhead, like, short light guy. And he would, every time he'd come in, clearly just cracked up. And he would just go, all the time. Oh yeah. Nice. He doesn't go, oh, I looked at fucking comes out of his mind.
SPEAKER_04So it sounds like he lived it. Sounds like you liked it. It sounds like a fun job. Sounds like a good experience.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I mean, thinking back on it, but you know how it is, man. During the moment, that shit sucks.
SPEAKER_06And it didn't sway you from not eating little Caesars. You still eat little Caesars.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it's great. I eat so much little Caesars. One time Heidi Wadey. I think it it was me and Jacob. Um shout out other podcasts. Um, dude, say the name. Oh, Lady Tinker Show. Um we were getting we were getting blamed because of the first counter. So I was always the one who was like taking the pizzas out of the oven and cutting them and boxing them. Um and they kept managers kept blaming us whenever because we don't have little pieces, it's never hot and ready, even though it's hot and ready.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_03So the people from the first we'll put the thickers and have the pizzas in tiles for which orders would go to who. And they would come and take the stickers off and take pizzas for different orders that were waiting. And whenever they were like, Oh, we don't have these pizzas for this order, even though we made those pizzas. Me and Jacob got in trouble for it. They were like, hey, y'all need to like label the pizzas that are from stupid. And so what we did in Rebellion is uh we got a box. This is so funny because this only affects the customer. That's so uh this is dumb. But uh we put a single we put a single pepperoni in a box and then put it in the hot and ready box and then like pulled in.
SPEAKER_05Nice. That's so shit. They were like, what the fuck? Yeah, that's so dumb.
SPEAKER_03We were so sure they were gonna like someone's gonna call and like complain, and like but no one said it. I think we really we gave it to the like person who had really given up online. They opened it, saw that, killed themselves. There's no reason why they didn't call. Because it's it was just a single pepperone.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, if they didn't call, you just caused like a mental breakdown. Probably.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_06They definitely fucking lost it. So that was your second job.
SPEAKER_03That's good. Um, that was my second job. And then my third job was at a was at a car wash.

Like this current job, there's there's some days that make you want to kill yourself. They just go on because we're not we get paid by the day. SPEAKER_06Yeah, so like if we get off at two, I get paid the same as if we get off at eight. Which it just which is very rare. Right. But like we've had jobs where we're not leaving until like seven and it's usually when you're leaving by seven, you're you're a little exhausted. So you're a little annoyed. A little annoyed, a little peeved, it's probably raining or and it's dark, and you get there when it's dark, and then you're leaving when it's dark, and it just it kind of piles on you on your mental a little bit. One of the worst days, we had a uh shout out Tristan, boy that was just on the phone. He was moving. He was moving from his apartment to the tiny home that he's in now. And that day at work we had a removal, which is like us vacuuming out an attic. So we get there, we're vacuuming it all out, and it's just not going well. Machine's breaking down, it's a shitty attic, it just keeps on going. And then we finally leave the job, it was pouring rain, finally leave the job at like 7, 7:30 ish, drive all the way back in the box truck to the shop, get in our cars, go to his apartment, load up a U-Haul, and move him to the tiny house. Okay. I guess I didn't go with him to the tiny house, but yeah, it was just after that like crazy long day, right? He had to move his entire apartment. And they were already there like working on it, but we got there to like do some of the bigger shit. But him and I stopped, we rode together at that time. Him and I stopped on the way to move uh at Canes. We still talk about that experience. It was some of the best canes we've ever had. We stopped, it was after that crazy shitty day at work. It was like 8 30, 9 p.m., pulling up to the canes right by his apartment and just sitting there munching and then had to go do more work. It sucked. That was a bad day.
SPEAKER_04So, okay, I I get I've had those days actually just dragging forever. I mean, yeah, I've had plenty of like days where I hate, like I just want to leave.

You gotta drag the hose through the house. Yeah, it's just that it adds so much fucking nonsense.

We get a lot of stuff is outside, but that's when we have to figure out like or like work on the stuff that we know needs to be worked on inside the church. Yeah. Uh but we save that stuff for when it rains. When I say stuff like that, I'm talking about like the pews or like lighting that we can't reach. Yeah. You need a certificate for that? No, because I was uh so I was a substitute teacher, which you don't need your well, I had a college degree or uh college an associate's degree, yep. Oh I got a two-year degree, not like a bachelor's or anything. But uh I have an associate's degree, so I was able but you can get it without one. You can become a substitute without one, but you get paid more if you have one. Right so when I first moved to Conroe, I did that for a little bit, and then um what happens is they'll offer you a long-term position if something happens. So the guy retired at Christmas break, and I had already subbed there a couple times, and they hit me up and were like, hey, do you want to finish out the year with us? And they bump your pay a little bit, and then you're you have like job security. So I was able to finish the year with them. How long did you work there? Five months from like, yeah, it was Christmas break. I started like right after that until graduation. Or whatever, the summer break.
SPEAKER_04So you were just a temp at that time at that point?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, we had three PE teachers. I was one of them. Uh it's a really it was a big school. And um, so yeah, there was the two long-term coaches there, and then I was just, yeah, they're kind of their little helper. But it was that was I mean, that was a really fun job. It was fucking sick. It was at a very uh no it was a notoriously bad school in the county. Um an intermediate that starts with the letter G. You probably figure it out. Ends with Conroe? Rangerland. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it's is uh Well Conroe again, I have over 70 schools on the IST.
SPEAKER_06But this yeah, it's just um intermediate school that has a lot of like behavioral issues. But it was really fun. That was a really fun job. And then what else have I done? I worked at the CVS warehouse for a bit, didn't like it. What else? I did And you know pre-works there. Yeah. Yeah, yeah. I didn't know if she wanted to say that out loud.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that was actually gonna be my next step. I have hit and miss days. Um today was not a fight.
SPEAKER_04Wait, here, hold on, let me do that. We works at the market. Uh market fucking distributed. No, I no, I was, I was. Uh I was. Sorry, I'm baby.
SPEAKER_02Um today was actually more of a Monday for me. Um I had a great week until today. Damn. Yeah. Um I actually started learning the um the order picker machines. Yeah. So I've been training on that. Um I had a normal Monday, not like up.
SPEAKER_04It's a forklift for the listeners.
SPEAKER_06You're talking about the thing that goes up real hard. That's what I did when I was there, the picking. Yes. I'm scared of hyped. I pick my nose all the time. Dude, sorry, don't listen to me. I pick my nose. Sorry, babe. Go ahead.
SPEAKER_02Um it's an order picker. Yeah. Um and it's essentially a forklift where you're on a platform going up with the palette. Um and I have I've been wanting to learn the machines just to get it under my belt. Um and if it needs to be done and I don't have the people I need there, I can do it.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um so Monday, normal Monday, easy day. Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, training on an order picker. Super easy days. Yeah. I wasn't even chasing because I'm not a chaser. I just am learning the machine. So I'm going around consolidating, which is making space for bigger holes of pellets. Um and then today I went back to the re receiving dock, which is what I do. Um I'm a group lead. So I'm in charge. And today was it it was one thing after another. I I just I was ready to go by like seven o'clock. Mind you, I clock in at 5 30.
SPEAKER_06Those order picker machines are fucking terrifying. That's what I did when I worked there. And uh you go to build pallets up there. Dude, you know how many times I went up? How high is the highest rack do you think? Like 25 feet?
SPEAKER_02Probably easily. 25, 30 feet high. Looking down, especially on like the older order pickers, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Dude, yeah, they're rocking. They're so much. You have to climb on the pallet to start building it, but there's a clip that you clip on because you go so high. You know how many times I got to the top and would be like crawling on shit and forget to clip and just like going down with your heart racing, being like, I almost died.
SPEAKER_02I don't know how many times. So I had a moment yesterday, mid-training, I got pulled away. So I had to get off my machine. You have to unclip because you can't go anywhere. Um, I got back on my machine, clipped, raised my palate how I needed to, but sat there for like two minutes thinking, did I forget something? I feel like something's off. So I like yank at the the lanyard um attached to my harness, making sure it's connected because of the fact that I am terrified that like I'm gonna end up falling.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um walking on the pallets actually the last couple of days. I always like, especially on like the very top level, I'm still like holding on to like the racking because I'm that scared.
SPEAKER_06I'm like, dude, you're telling me I was I'm terrified of heights, and I did it, I would my knees would be shaking up there. I hated that job. Hated it. You get used to it. There's also I when I was there, there was uh I don't know why I was about to say someone's name. Um there was all right, so they tell you in the briefing, right? You're driving the machines around and there's all the little uh the curbs like around the shelves and shit to like protect you from bumping into them. And they tell you when you're training, like, hey, if you ever like hit these, tell us. Obviously, like whatever, that makes sense. I was driving one one day, dude. I barely clipped it so like like this is the thing I'm driving, and I like it didn't even like jolt the machine, like I touched it and was like, oh, whoops, and like kept going past dude. 30 minutes later, they go, Hey, so-and-so wants to see you in the office. I was like, that's weird. And uh she pulls me in and was like, Hey. Is that on video? Yeah, she was like, Hey, uh, you uh you clipped this thing and you didn't report it, so that's gonna be a write-up. And I was like, Oh the fuck did they even see that?
SPEAKER_02That's fucking bullshit.
SPEAKER_06But it wasn't even like noticeable. I don't know. Lame as hell, dude. Fuck that play. No, I'm just joking. Sorry.
SPEAKER_02I can't say that. Yeah, but I like it.

SPEAKER_04It's a great play. Her uh her forklift was custom. Oh, really? Yeah, they're they made her one and it sounds like it's like uh everybody knows when it's her.

SPEAKER_02I don't know how many people over the last week thought that I got demoted.

SPEAKER_02Yeah, because I go from wearing my purple group lead vest to an orange training vest, and they're like, Oh my god, did you get demoted? Yeah. Are are you gonna be just a driver now? I was like, no, no, I'm just I'm just improving myself. Like it's a it's a step I have to take.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Don't get mad because I'm learning more than you and you've been here longer. Yeah. What else have I done? Let's see. Oh, I worked at my family business for uh I worked there for like 10 years. I guess that was a pretty big chunk of my work history. Um my grandma and dad, I guess my grandma owns it. My dad, oh I don't know.
SPEAKER_04They own a trophy shop. I was gonna ask, are you allowed to are you allowed to say what?
SPEAKER_06I could say what.
SPEAKER_04I probably should I say the name? It's not a good thing.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, they do it. My dad runs the laser engravers, and um, yeah, we do trophies, medals. I did the t-shirt, I was like part of the or like ran like the t-shirt department. Um so I did silk screening. Mostly silk screening. We did a little bit of vinyl and then we out outsourced all the embroidery. But yeah, I did that for a long time. So it was like custom clothing and customers. Yeah. Yeah, just like printing shit on it. Like we had some like big accounts that we would do. So like we had uh a little league down there, like one of the biggest little leagues in Texas.
SPEAKER_04So it was like a fast signs but not fast signs?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it's like a mom and pop fast signs. Mom and pop fast signs. Exactly. Yeah, pretty much. Fun times.
SPEAKER_04That'd be pretty cool. That's like me uh making my shirt snagg with my cricket. Yeah, my cricket explorer too.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, we did a little bit of vinyl too, but mostly I did mostly silk screening.

SPEAKER_00Uh but uh yeah, we've been uh I feel like I need to I need to say the the cliche, you know, long time listener, first time caller. Uh thanks for having me guys.
SPEAKER_04Classic. Classic. Thank you so much. You have no idea how much that means to us. No, so we've been basically just we've been asking uh the callers. Um so first of all, you don't have to say what you do, but if you want to, you can, if you want to start off with that. But uh we've been asking people, what's your best or worst experience uh any job that you've ever had?
SPEAKER_00Well, I'm yeah, I'm happy if you guys want to follow me on a journey of uh story that I can share. Um one of you know uncertainty and then some really, really uh exciting turn of event. Okay, there is a if you guys are interested, I'm happy to share.
SPEAKER_05Please. Yes, please.
SPEAKER_00Um yeah, so I guess to kind of preface it a couple years ago, I uh was working for like this biotech company that had me traveling quite a quite a bit. And I, you know, I remember asking and hoping to get to get a job like this, and it's exciting, and then I guess the reality of it was kind of dawning on me that maybe this isn't what I want to do forever. About to get married, we were thinking about starting family soon. So I was like, this is not sustainable. Um and it was uh April of 2019. Um and I um so the the job duty really consisted of me traveling to different uh states and different hospitals and institutions to collect uh tumor tissue to send to a lab so they could do certain testings and and they did some really cool stuff. But I was like for tissue acquisition guy. I would go and hop in the OR or some of the cool. I really enjoyed it. I thought what they were what the mission and what the product was doing was was exciting and helping cancer patients find better treatment options. And I was in McCallum, Texas, down south, and uh got a phone call from my my direct uh area manager and he was like, hey, don't go to the hospital. Um and if they call or the doctors call, like you know, don't answer, I'm like, Well, this is weird. And um sure enough, I I ended up kind of seeing the writing on the wall. They were saying there were some issues with the product that we were using and maybe maybe was is needing to be developed a little further. And so it kind of impressions on me like maybe I should, you know, just in case this is going south, maybe I should, you know, reach out to some contacts and you know put in some feelers of maybe another job. Uh that's the feeling that I got, right? So I'm saying beginning of April 2019, I you know, I reached out to uh a certain company that I had been trying to trying to get a get in on a position, and then I had a colleague of mine that did medical sales that I reached out to and you know just took the feelers out and started interviewing. Um let's fast forward to the end of the month. I've now been like sitting at home for literally 20 days or so because the company said, hey, put you in the holding pattern, don't go anywhere. Or as far as the surgeries that I had planned, don't go to them and don't answer your your account contacts. Well, by the end of the month, we have this meeting, it pops up like last minute, 9 a.m. on like April 28th, if I remember correctly. It was like literally the end of the month.
SPEAKER_05Nice.
SPEAKER_00And we get on a Zoom call and the company's based out of Boston, and and then they you know jump on the Zoom call and they say, Hey, uh, we're actually laying all the clinical team off. So, you know, those teams that were quite intentional, I'm I'm sorry. But unfortunately, you guys uh you guys are being laid off. And so it was unfortunate. I mean it's truck. I just started working with this company almost six months in, and uh basically I you know have them start over. And you know, by the I'll be honest, I give this all credit to God. I by the grace of God, I had been interviewing and I had two particular jobs that were like interested in me. One was uh lucrative, it had you know good benefits and financial um you know uh salary and whatnot, and then the other one was um definitely a pay cut, but it was something I've been trying to get into for a long time in research. And uh so after I, you know, 9 a.m. found that I I'm no longer employed, one hour later I get a phone call from the you know from one of the companies to offer me a job.
SPEAKER_05Damn.
SPEAKER_00And so I was unemployed for a whole hour, and I was so grateful that I I you know that whole month I was kind of prayerful and just you know hoping that hey things will work out.
SPEAKER_04That's so cool.
SPEAKER_00I remember thinking of like, man, I have two two good things that are kind of brewing in the background, and I told myself and prayed, I said, Lord, whatever door you open first, I'm I'm gonna know that that is your your call. And sure enough, as soon as I got that phone call, I was you know, without any hesitation, I took the job and and I've been ever since.
SPEAKER_04That's really cool to think about. And then think about that too. That's seven years ago now. It'll be seven years ago next week.
SPEAKER_00Jesus. Yeah, it'll be seven years ago, and my first official day was May 13th. So yeah, it was like two weeks later I started. Um yeah, it was that's my uh roller coaster of a job going south, but then turning into something fruitful.
SPEAKER_06Your anniversary is coming up.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, which is kind of wild to think I've been there for seven years.
SPEAKER_06So tissue acquisition, when you go to pick up some some tissue, what do you what is what's the package look like?
SPEAKER_00So we actually had a specialized package and a special courier. Um, and it was that was the reason why I was there. I had to, you know, uh, it had to be secured in a certain solution to preserve the tissue. Um it also had to stay sterile. There was a whole method of making sure we weren't contaminating the samples. And then secondly, we had to package it up uh well enough where it gets on a it gets on a a charter flight that that night that we booked and it gets flown to the lab in in Boston. And the cool thing about that is it's actually um if if you have a medical background or something like if you have an infection in a swab that's an area where you know you think is infected, and then go into a culture, they're basically growing it in a pizza dish to see what bacteria grows, right? And then they challenge different antibiotics to see what would be more sensitive to it. That's what you know the reasons where you do a culture. Well, now near that for cancer patients. We're taking tissue and they were trying to recreate a microenvironment, allowing it to grow and be stable, and then they would challenge it with different chemotherapies and treatment lines. And the whole method and the uh idea behind it, and this is why I was like in development, was they were trying to see what was the tissue more responsive to this treatment versus that treatment, and it would give a a provider maybe some insight on a patient responding better with this chemo line versus that one. And so that was the idea behind it. And it we saw some success with it. We also it was still um being being ran through clinical trial, and that's where I was that's my role came in as working on part of the clinical trial to to help validate that this this this test actually was uh accurate, essentially.
SPEAKER_04So with that uh tissue job, did you have to wear like a hazmat suit or like PPE or anything? You gotta be full cracked.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Yeah, I was I was all gowned up and just like the the operating staff, you know, and trainings and stuff like that. And and I've and then before that job, I had a lot of OR experience with medical skills that I did. Um one of the coolest ones, I remember I was in Denver in the University of Colorado, there was a gentleman sadly having to have a lobectomy, which means they were removing half of his lung, and that's the tissue they were calling pulling it from, and so they like did this really crazy surgery to cut out a large section of one of its lobes, and then they we took some tissue from that and then we sent that to the lab. Um that was an amazing surgery to watch. It was like six hours long.
SPEAKER_06You were in the room for it?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, for the entire case.
SPEAKER_06Uh you don't get squeamish of that kind of stuff?
SPEAKER_00No, I never did. Um yeah, I've got into I've been to MR for a lot of different procedures and surgeries, and um, that's something that never yeah, never really never really got to me.
SPEAKER_04What's the gnarliest one? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Honestly, I mean that lobectomy is pretty cool. Um I've seen some crazy spinal surgeries. Um kind of get wild. And then a lot of orthopedic stuff, so like knee replacement, shoulder rotator cuff repairs, and stuff like that. And um as crazy as it sounds, basically orthopedic doctors to me just remind me of a carpenter, but working on human bodies. I mean, they they that's essentially what they're doing in a very crass way to explain it. But I mean, yeah, they're they're fixing people that way, and it it can be pretty uh it can be pretty intense in the OR when they're hammering on bones and stuff.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I imagine. It's a pretty crazy. Yeah, I don't think I'd do too well in there. Obviously, one for lack of knowledge, but then also just yeah, that seems awful. It sounds fucking horrible. Sorry. Um Yeah, that's yeah. Well, I appreciate you calling. That was awesome.

SPEAKER_06Yeah, I literally have it timed where I get in my car roughly between 5 55 and like 6 02 every morning, and that song is either kicking off or finishing up literally every day. And then it's straight to the show, and I I'm sitting there with one eye open.
SPEAKER_04That's all I look that's all I listen to when I would drive.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Yeah, I I don't have my uh because I drive that old Jeep now, I don't have my phone connected to it. So I yeah, I just rock the radio. Most people rock like Spotify and stuff. I don't have my phone connected to the car have aux at all. Uh it does, yeah, but I just don't really fuck with it. I like the radio. Okay. I know it's a lost form of media, it's becoming a lost form of media, but uh I still hold it down that I love terrestrial radio.
SPEAKER_04Bro, I still have DVDs. Yeah, no, I feel like I feel you.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, no, I love I love radio. That's uh I think it's a cool art. I think it's a cool like what Rod Ryan does is so underrated. Like being able to host a show for four hours like that every single day with new shit, new games. I mean, it's an incredible thing to do. He just turned 60. He's old, yeah. He turned 60 this week. That's nuts.
