Welcome to the Am Jackson podcast of how I survive the series. In these mental health episodes, I'm creating a space for real conversations about the things we often keep to ourselves, our struggles, our healing, and the stories that shape who we are. Hello, welcome to the podcast. Um, thank you so much for joining me today on another mental health discussion. Um, before we begin, can you give yourself a little introduction?
SPEAKER_00Hi, Daniela. Thank you for that welcome. I am Alice Dillon, author of the book Alone in a Sea of Normal. And in my days, I am an intuitive counselor, life coach, and Reiki Master of wow, 25 years now. And so I see clients uh either online or in person. I teach classes and I write books.
SPEAKER_01Oh wow, that's pretty cool. Um, would you say that your journey in coaching was a result to your own mental health journey?
SPEAKER_00In a sense, yes, in that 27 years ago or so I started, I did my first Reiki class. And at that time I was very successful business-wise. I was an entrepreneur, I had my own business, I had a squad of 800 agents across the country, we were doing so well. So I had achieved uh financial business success, but I still really struggled with the knowledge that I was a successed human. I was an indigo uh at that stage, young adult, and there were a lot of challenges that came with that, and initially Reiki really helped me to quiet a lot of that. Reiki helped with you know, getting into any kind of meditation will do that, it will help you to really reconnect and align and help you attain emotional balance. So when I experienced such positive results for myself with Reiki, I wanted to go on and teach that. It was a passion. It was like, oh, well, if this has done such good things for me, then surely other people, this will do great things for other people too. And so I started teaching. And then along that road is where the rest of it unfolded, where I really came to understand what it is to be an indigo, or um there's so many labels these days, HSP, intuitive, empath. Um, some of some people even like to go with their diagnosis, which is usually ADHD or somewhere in that line. And so the same tools that help with uh one of those things can really help with all of them, and I have experienced that, and then along that road, uh seeing more and more clients, having more and more students, I find now that most of the people who turn up at my door are uh one of that group, and my passion now is to really support and nurture the what some people call us the neurodivergent community. I don't like that label because it wasn't chosen by us. I prefer the indigos or the uh sensitives or the intuitives. So those of us who are spiritually perceptive, um, whatever we're called by whoever, uh, yes. So that's my journey started with Reiki, I think. And then it evolved into counseling and uh and other things, but it was the benefit that I experienced that then I wanted to share with others.
SPEAKER_01Wow, that's interesting. Um, can you elaborate for those like myself who are not familiar? Uh, can you elaborate on how Reiki can be a positive thing and how it can help you?
SPEAKER_00Certainly. And let me start by saying that in those days when I first got dragged along to my first ref first degree Reiki class, and I need to qualify that I'm I can only speak for a suishiki royal Reiki. I can't speak for all the other lineages that have evolved since Reiki hit Western society. Uh so there's a lineage that I was trained under called a Sui Shiki Royal. I have had experience of other lineages and I've always returned to this one. So when I got when I was first introduced to Reiki, it was because a friend of mine had booked herself and her sister on this weird-sounding course. And I was, as I say, a business person at the time running around the country doing my thing. And I got a call at 6 30 in the morning to say, Hey, you have to come with me. I've booked on this thing, and my sister can't make it. So along I go, and I didn't expect when I got there, I thought, oh, these people, this all looks a bit woo-woo. Hey, this looks a bit strange. And as I sat there and as I experienced it, I I was sold. I was like, wow, there's something really happening here. So what the science says is that the practice of Reiki puts you into a theta state. So into directly into theta meditation state. So when you receive Reiki or when you give yourself Reiki, you achieve theta-level meditation, which if anyone knows about meditation, in other meditation forms, it can take months to achieve, or even years to achieve theta-level meditation. And that is the level where your body rebalances, where it readjusts, where it does its healing, and it clears out. And so when you sleep, you experience maybe 10 to 15 minutes of theta-level sleep every three hours or so. And during Reiki, you can experience a whole 45 minutes uh under Reiki treatment. So you're harnessing the body's own healing mechanisms to heal itself, basically, and rebalance and calm the emotions, and and Reiki is just a very gentle and pervasive healing system. A lot of healing systems out there, a lot of the manual ones like reflexology aromatherapy, uh, EFT, I can name a hundred. And a lot of that manual, when you when you get involved and you manipulate something or you intentionally clear something, it can be a lot more dramatic than Reiki, which is pervasive. Not to say that Reiki can't have instant results. We've all experienced them as Reiki practitioners. We've experienced immediate healings, miraculous things. Um, you all know that Dr. Oz, who was a surgeon, I don't know if he still practices, Dr. Mehmet Oz, he also insisted that there always be Reiki masters in his surgery with him, giving Reiki to his patients. So there's a lot of science now behind Reiki. It's no longer woo-woo, it's now got a lot of scientific backing. And I think that's what appealed to me, honestly, in the beginning is I could feel something, and then I really started seeing the results in my life. I had IBF, um, IBS, sorry, I had uh um uh, you know, persistent stomach issues, and all of those disappeared very quickly when I started implementing Reiki. I was also a very dynamic driven person that never allowed myself to, you know, that A-type personality never allowed myself to relax, and Reiki really allowed me to relax, to calm, to slow down, and in that space, I reopened all of my intuitive and clairvoyant and all of my indigo faculties, which I'd never truly shut down. I used them a lot in business, but when your mind is quiet and when your emotional state is calm, it is much clearer to be able to harness that. So Reiki was my most significant, I think, healing journey. And so, as I say, I teach that because if if anyone has does nothing else for themselves, it's the number one thing that I would say. Go go do a Reiki class. Two days, you'll be able to access Theta level meditation, and there is a reason why every spiritual practice in the world, almost every single spiritual religious practice, includes some level of meditation because it's so beneficial to the human self, you know. So Reiki was my first step along my healing journey, and it really took me deeply into healing. And of my students, I can tell you that it is really profoundly impactful. It does so much to clear the decks, to help people to balance, to align. And it's empowering too because we've grown up in a society where if we get a boo-boo, we run along to a white coat somewhere. Whereas with Reiki, um, we really know we have it within us to achieve some level of healing ourselves without needing to directly get in in the car and go off to get a prescription of some kind. So Reiki is a great place to start for 90% of people, 99% of people. And I really see dramatic and gentle results with all my clients, and especially in the area of mental health. It's so empowering. Um, my young one has grown up with Reiki all of his life, and he knows if he's in a particularly bad mood, he'll come and say, Mom, I need to go give myself some Reiki now, because he knows that when he does that, he gives himself some Reiki, he'll come out the other end and he'll be refreshed and revived. So it's a different way of living, and it certainly is something that we can naturally, intrinsically do. Just the Reiki, the form itself, the Sui Shiki Royal form, is the easiest and most effortless path or system that I have found that is 100% guaranteed to work on every single student. There's never been a student, and I've sat through I think 30,000, 40,000 um individual student classes, and there's never been one student in any of them that hasn't left that first degree class and said, Wow, I have Reiki. Yay!
SPEAKER_01Wow, that's really fascinating. Um I'm just curious, um, is there an ideal client to receive Reiki, or can anyone benefit from it? Also, are you able to perform it on yourself?
SPEAKER_00Oh, absolutely, and this is one of the things that I love so much about the Reiki process, which really follows your Eastern uh tradition, is your first degree Reiki, which um is your very first class that you attend, that first degree is very much for yourself. So you attend first degree for yourself. Sometimes, yes, for your loved ones and your direct family, but mostly it's for your own self. And under the traditional Ifsuishiki royal path, you cannot move on from Reiki One until you have been giving yourself Reiki for at least three months. And the Western world doesn't like that a lot because we like instant gratification and instant results. But what it does do is it ensures that somebody really saturates, they really take in that Reiki and they use that Reiki for their own selves for at least a quarter of a year before they even look to perhaps applying it to someone outside of their direct environment. So Reiki first degree is very much about yourself and applying it to yourself. There are a series of hand positions or applications of Reiki that you use in first degree that are for you, that cover all your chakras, that ensure that you're getting the best benefit. And of course, the students who benefit most from first degree are those who actually apply it. So they apply it to their own selves, and they see and feel and witness the benefit, not only in themselves, but in their lives. I've also had parents come and they really see the f the benefit it that is derived by their children receiving Reiki. As to the ideal um uh patient or client for Reiki, no, there's no ideal. Uh only the only proviso is they must be willing to receive it, obviously. So I'm always very cautious of people who drag along their friends. Um come on, you're gonna have this Reiki now. Because it is something different, it's something a lot of people haven't experienced before, and someone needs to be open to experiences, someone needs to be open to receiving it, and there's nothing incredibly uh woo-woo about a Reiki treatment. Uh Reiki practitioner will place their hands on many different hand positions on the head and the chest and then on the back to in entirely saturate a person with Reiki. And during a Reiki treatment, most people from the first time will go straight into Reiki, into theta, and stay there for the full duration of the Reiki treatment. Uh, with some people, especially people who are more hesitant, it might take a treatment or two before they truly allow themselves to receive it, you know, like lie down and make sure, okay, if my head doesn't come off, my toes don't fall off in the next week, then maybe next time I'll be more relaxed. Uh so sometimes it does take uh a treatment or two for people to truly receive. But in general, anyone who books for a Reiki treatment, comes along, requests a Reiki treatment, is going to get equal benefit from receiving Reiki. And of course, for our own selves, it's of enormous benefit because we have something that we can apply to ourselves, with ourselves, every day for at least half an hour, that will rebalance our energetic body, that will realign us, that will clear our, you know, we we store up so many unprocessed emotions, so many undigested thoughts, uh so much noise really from the world out there, and so Reiki really does assist in rebalancing daily, bringing ourselves down to a level calm space, and when we respond from that, everything just gets better. So Reiki, yes, anyone can receive Reiki, anyone can attend a Reiki class, you know. They um you find there is a site called the Reiki Alliance, it's an international site, and you can find your local uh Reiki masters who run classes, and normally classes are over two days, sometimes they stretch them over four days at three hours a day, but you can attend a Reiki class wherever you are, and you can find the benefit for yourself. And there's no one I've ever met that has regretted learning proper application of meditation, and it's become a mainstream thing with high-performance individuals. People who really go at it all day, uh, especially business people, really recognize the importance of being able to give themselves Reiki. The other thing I found when I was very busy, when I was running a business and traveling the country and around the world, actually as well, was that Reiki, 45 minutes of Reiki, allowed me to operate at two to three hours sleep a day. So if I would just do my Reiki every day, I could then go full steam uh all day and almost all night with just two to three hours sleep. Uh obviously, as I'm older now, it's my sleep is I I treasure my sleep more and there's more of it. But in those days when I was really in a high performance environment, sometimes those extra four or five hours would be important. But Reiki really enabled that for me and for other people. I know in the business sector I have a lot of clients who deeply benefit from the idea of being able to do a 15-minute Reiki nap and then carry on with their days. Not that we should abuse our bodies like that and not get enough sleep, but if there is a period in your life where you're having to meet deadlines, then Reiki is something that can truly help you to extend your days and your alertness and your vitality so that you can get through your days without needing any other kind of supplement.
SPEAKER_01Uh thank you for sharing and being so informative. Now, what would you tell someone who is newly open to Reiki? Like, what can people expect after doing it?
SPEAKER_00Initially, everyone's experience of Reiki is slightly different, but there are a few commonalities. One of these is an initial detox. Every student goes through a few days of initial detox where their bodies shed whatever toxins they've been holding on to, and then it becomes a journey. So every time you do Reiki you go into theta space where you can cleanse, heal, connect with your higher self, and you can have a physical journey. If someone is battling with disease or illness, Reiki will really support the healing of that. And if there is mental or psychological stress, then Reiki also really supports people reconsolidating their spiritual and emotional state into something that is more focused in the now, more present, more conscious in every moment. As you journey down with Reiki, as you journey forward with Reiki, it becomes something different again. initially it like wipes the surface it it cleans and then as you're moving forward it also uplifts and it helps you to clarify various areas of your life so things in your life will shift you will find that things in your life start to adjust to your new state of being the studies that have been done on the implementation of meditation which is the same thing because Reiki is is a state of meditation that is self-induced and to me if you had told me before I had gone to my first Reiki class that meditation could be this easy to access I would not have believed you I could not stop my mind going a mile a minute but then when you step into Reiki and you start to apply it and you realize that your mind can slow down that you can access Theta meditation the studies have shown that people especially in high powered positions gain greater clarity they become more uh aware more conscious they become more efficient and certainly more capable um so so Reiki really is a is a right round support and it's something that will uplift and serve everybody's lives my animals know Reiki they come to me they ask for it they'll sit there they'll receive it and then they'll go away so it's like a natural plug-in plug-in that they come to me and sit down and I know with with each of them what their signal is for yes hands on please I'll have some Reiki now they have as much as they want and then they go away so all of life knows what it needs at some level and if you continue to apply Reiki to yourself it will greatly enhance your experience your human experience at all levels physically emotionally mentally and then spiritually too because my focus is now a lot about supporting indigo adults so sensitives empaths and all of those the benefits to the indigo community to the intuitive community is almost unquantifiable because we're already dealing with so much uh input we're we're gathering we're taking in so much information that traditional systems don't tell us how to deal with but Reiki really helps us to clarify our connections it helps us to maintain balance and maintain presence and interpret the information that we're receiving that much better. So all round Reiki meditation these are things that I don't believe in this new day and age especially with all the chaos and the speed of things and technology I don't believe that we can unless unless you're living on a mountain somewhere in a in a cabin and you're connected to nature and nature is taking care of you but if you're in a town in a city if you have an abnormally structured life surrounded by concrete and uh chaotic days then Reiki is going to be something that is going to help establish a balance if you think in the old days we once lived on planes and connected to the earth and connected to nature and so we've lost so much of that and so Reiki is one of those tools that really helps us to restore balance that really helps us to negate some of the negative impact of modern living and can bring us back into our true selves and bring us back to a holistic experience of our authentic self. It will help us deal with whatever our challenges are and support us on our journey as far as indigo sensitive highly sensitive people empaths intuitives or people who have been labeled in some way neurodivergent every tool that we can find to help us to stay centered to remain clear to emotionally balance every one of those tools that is going to support us is vital in this day and age while the world's gone a little loopy we need as many of these grounding and healing processes as we can implement and Reiki is not a a chore it's not like getting on the treadmill and running for an hour Reiki is lying down in a comfortable position placing your hands in various places and you receive the benefit of that so it's going to be an easy thing to fit into your days and at the same time you will feel and you will really see the benefit of it almost immediately if I can just add to that as well there's an additional component here of a confidence a level of confidence that you know if you've had a particularly challenging day you've just nothing has felt like it's gone right today you have you hold within your own hands the ability to just take a break to put your hands on yourself and receive Reiki for yourself and rebalance and reconnect and detox from whatever that experience was so there's a real confidence boost in knowing that you are empowered to deal with the general ups and downs that you can experience every day. And I think that in that there is something deeply significant for humanity right now where we feel so hopeless and dependent on other things the more we can do for our own selves the more confident we become in directing our human experience Wow thanks for the clarification I'll end it here.
SPEAKER_01Thank you so much for joining me today again. You were very informative which my listeners and I do appreciate as well. Keep doing what you're doing and take care.
SPEAKER_00Thank you Daniela and thank you very much for the work you do with everyone out there who's feeling lost right now. It's just so uplifting to know that there are so many voices out there that are trying to help people to connect with tools and mechanisms that will help support their journey so thank you too and I look forward to following you on your podcast and seeing where you go
