A great massage can relax your muscles, but what if the deeper win is feeling safe enough to finally exhale? Virginia McConnell sits down with Heather Dempsey of Self Care Center in Venice, Florida to talk about building a day spa that treats self-care as both physical restoration and emotional well-being. Heather shares how her love of nurturing people shaped a practice that goes beyond surface-level beauty, with trauma-informed service, thoughtful training, and an approach designed to meet clients exactly where they are.

We also get practical about skincare in the Sunshine State. Heather explains why the sun is the number one aging factor for skin and how sun exposure impacts collagen, elastin, dryness, and pigmentation. If you’re searching for smarter anti-aging skincare, help with sun damage, or a facial that actually fits your goals, this conversation offers a grounded lens on what matters and why consistency beats quick fixes.

Then we zoom out to industry standards and client empowerment. Heather calls out a surprising gap: many people never ask to see a practitioner’s license or about continuing education. We talk about why credentials, holistic education, and nervous system awareness can change both safety and results, and how honest marketing helps the right clients find a higher-level experience without pressure.

If this resonates, share the episode with a friend who needs real self-care, and subscribe so you don’t miss the next local story. After you listen, what’s one question you’ll ask before booking your next service?

Meet Heather Dempsey And Self-Care Center

SPEAKER_02

you think. Today, I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Heather Dempsey with Self-Care Center. How are you? I'm great, Virginia. Thank you. How are you? I'm doing well. Thank you. We're excited to learn about you and your business. Can you tell me more?

A Spa Built On Nurturing

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, sure. So I am a little sleepy because I'm so obsessed with my business. I was up until about three in the morning redesigning like a menu. Um that's why I definitely look like I'm tired. Um, but that's part of it. Like the business came and was born out of like absolute love for nurturing people. And then through life's experiences, realizing that there's more to healing than just like a massage and a facial, even though we do that, and that's a really um important piece for somatic healing. That there's also a lot more that's like emotional and well-being centered that we've brought into it as well. So um I'm originally from Pennsylvania and I had a day spa there for almost 19 years before I sold it, and it was ranked as number one in the greater Philadelphia region. So I've had some experience. So it was exciting to bring it to Venice, but it's definitely a different world living somewhere seasonal versus living somewhere, you know, that's full all year long. Um, so that's been an interesting, uh, I guess, like learning experience.

SPEAKER_02

Yes, and uh lots of sun. Lots of sun.

Why Sun Damage Ages Skin

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Yeah. So it's been easy to promote the skincare part of the business because everyone needs, you know, healing from sun damage and just sun is the number one aging factor for our skin. You know, we think it's aging, it's actually sun because the sun breaks down like the collagen production, the elastin production, it dries it, it's creates pigmentation. So there's so much to it that um, yeah, that's been it's really easy to build that part of the business.

unknown

Yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah.

How Heather Entered The Industry

SPEAKER_02

And and how did you get into this business?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I think just I think that I was born to nurture is part of it, but I also really love details and I'm a really good organizer and just kind of strategizer. So I think just being an employee for someone for a long time and seeing other ways things could be done, other ways that people that work for you can be treated, and also wanted to just always be curious and learn new things and add new things. So it just evolves. I mean, it's been more than half my life that I've owned this type of business, and uh yeah, so I think it's over God. I tried to figure it out the other day. It's like over 27 years, I think. Um, so just evolving into saying, like, what is it that people are looking for? What is it that they need is the first thing. But what is it that they're looking for that they think will satiate that need or attend to that need, and then how can we introduce things that do, but then also help even more? Um, so it was always important to me that it not just be this like aesthetic and external healing, but that that's available, but at a different level with people that are trauma-informed and incredibly conscientious, incredibly thoroughly trained, and more modalities than just what they offer, um, because it's it's a special space when people come in to be nurtured. Most of them don't get that in their life, or not the way that they can do it in a business like ours.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah. And sometimes you're the only people that have that touch with them. So yeah, that's special. Yeah. Or without like an agenda afterwards. Right. Yeah. Yep.

Licensing Myths And Better Standards

SPEAKER_02

Um, so what are some myths or misconceptions in your industry?

SPEAKER_01

Um myths and misconceptions. So I think I think that's the general public that doesn't know about our business doesn't realize the licensing and the certification that should be a part of their practitioner. Um, in my business in almost 30 years, I've been I've been in this industry for over 30, owning it for a little less than that. I've probably only a handful of times had people ask to see my license. And so that's troubling because there are a lot of people out there that, or they might even just hold the license, but they don't do continuing education, or they don't do things that are not necessarily on their agenda for their work, but how do they become a more holistic person in what they offer from other stuff? Like, for example, you would want your massage therapist to also practice meditation, right? You would want your massage therapist to understand the that the body holds trauma because some stuff can come out if you're doing a massage. You would want your esthetician to understand that when you're breaking out here, while most of the time that is hormonal, it could also be representative of energetically you're not being able to speak or someone isn't listening to you. Right. So these are things that first of all, people don't even necessarily ask for our license, but second, they don't necessarily know that they could ask what else we do and who else we are as a person, because that can really change the the level of service that you have and the results that you get from it.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and I think a lot of people don't even know what they need help with. Exactly. Right. So you know it's nice to have that outside perspective looking in from different angles, not just like you were saying, you know, the beauty aspect and the spa aspect. But I I really like that.

SPEAKER_00

Yeah.

SPEAKER_01

Um I think that one of the things that we really take pride in too is it's uh meeting people where they are when they come in. Like we have so many clients that come in that they don't know anything about energy work or that the body holds our emotions from the past, or they think that it might be digging up too much stuff from the past and they don't want to go there, but we do it in such an approachable way, like such an approachable way that it's really easy to understand it. Um I could go into an example, but I'm sure we have limited time.

SPEAKER_02

So um, so we know marketing is the heart of every business.

Authentic Marketing And Ideal Clients

SPEAKER_02

Who is your target clientele and how do you attract them?

SPEAKER_01

I think being really authentic with who we are and just having no fear and saying that in our messaging. You know, I remember when I very first opened and seeing how it was in Florida, um, I knew that we provided a different level of experience. And so I talked about that, you know, we might be higher priced than the average place, but here's why. And if it and it was in a way of like, if you know, their personal values don't matter to you, if their continue education doesn't matter to you, then that you know, $80 place is perfect. There's nothing wrong with it. But when you want more, when you're seeking more, that's why we're the place that you would want to find. So it's it's having no fear in in what you're saying that it might not appeal to someone because that means it's perfect. Like if you're not appealing to someone, that means they get to find the place that's right for them. And when we're really honest with who we are, then it's the right people that find us. So um, yeah, I think that's the biggest piece that I've learned with with marketing is messaging and who you are and how you talk about that.

SPEAKER_02

Yeah, and alignment. Right. Yeah, yeah. Uh okay.

Why A Podcast Could Help

SPEAKER_02

So have you ever thought about having your own podcast?

SPEAKER_01

I actually have, yeah. Um it was, yeah. I think that um because of the coaching world and the work that I do in the therapeutic aspect of stuff, it's hard for people to really understand it in a super short little time. And um, you know, to have little bits and pieces and to start to build rapport and trust and that is really valuable. And I love to talk about stuff I love. So yeah.

The Promise: Space To Be You

SPEAKER_02

All right. Um, okay, so can you tell our listeners one thing they should remember about self-care center?

SPEAKER_01

Um, I think the intention is always for people to understand that they get to be exactly who they are. And unfortunately, in our life and with our family and our friends and our colleagues, we often have to fit into a space that makes everybody else accept us or feel good with us. And then it's really important to learn how to find that middle where there's a place that you can just be exactly who you are in a way that you're not compromising yourself when you fit into those spaces. Um, so I feel like that's kind of what we just try to do is give people that space to be exactly who they are.

SPEAKER_02

I love that. Thanks. Um, can you uh also tell our listeners um how they can learn more about self-care center?

How To Book And Connect

SPEAKER_01

Yeah, so we have uh a website that's a wealth of information. Sometimes people feel it's overwhelming, but it's just um www.sccvenice.com. Um on that is a contact form. They could email from there any questions. There's a booking link there that shows every service, all the prices, all the descriptions, and also there's a consultation. So if somebody would just want to chat with me or one of the practitioners, they can schedule. There's no commitment to do anything with that. It could just be like, can you tell me more about it? So yeah.

SPEAKER_02

Awesome. Okay, well, Heather, I really appreciate you being on the show. We wish you and your business the best moving forward. Thank you. Thank you.
