How Barbie’s Boutique Became A One-Stop Shop For Bridal And Special Occasions
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
A boutique can be more than a place to buy a dress. It can be the moment you finally feel like yourself in the mirror. We sit down with Erika Alarcon of Barbie’s Boutique to talk about what it takes to build that kind of experience and why her mission is simple: every woman who walks in should feel beautiful, empowered, and proud of what makes her different.
Erika shares the story behind her 12-year journey and how Barbie’s Boutique now has two locations with a clear focus: one dedicated to bridal, and another built for evening gowns, short dresses, Sweet 16 celebrations, and those once-in-a-lifetime events that deserve the right look. We also dig into the idea of a true one-stop shop, shaped by her own wedding experience, where customers can find not just the outfit, but shoes, accessories, and even tuxedos without running all over town.
If you’re into small business stories, local shopping, or boutique marketing, you’ll appreciate Erika’s honesty about how growth really happens. She talks about leaning heavily on word of mouth, experimenting with reels, TikTok, and Facebook, and learning as she goes, including navigating business life with Spanish as her first language. We also touch on the reality of working long retail hours, making time for family, and her curiosity about starting a podcast. Learn more at barbiesboutqiuesarasota.com

Welcome To Good Neighbor Podcast
SPEAKER_00This is the Good Neighbor Podcast, the place where local businesses and neighbors come together. Here's your host, Virginia McConnell.
Meet Erica From Barbie’s Boutique
SPEAKER_01Welcome to the Good Neighbor Podcast Live. Are you in need of a boutique? One might be closer than you think. Today I have the pleasure of introducing your good neighbor, Erica Allercon with Barbie's Boutique. How are you? Good. I'm so happy to be here. Good, yes, yes. We're excited to hear about you and your business. Can you tell us more?
Two Locations And What They Offer
SPEAKER_00Yes. So I'm 12th year in the business. I have two locations. One is just for bridal, and the other one is for evening gowns, short dresses, um, special moments, and sweet 16 or 15. Oh fun!
A Daughter’s Idea Sparks The Business
SPEAKER_01How did you get into this business?
SPEAKER_00It just was my daughter's idea. I have four boys, one girl. And since she was three, she started telling me your boutique, mommy, your boutique, because of course, being my only girl, I was playing with her, doing dresses for the dolls. And because I don't speak English, right? Like, well, so my first language is Spanish, even I wasn't familiar with the word boutique, so I'm learning, and one day I decide to open. So I'm I'm here.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that's awesome! Very
One-Stop Shop And Feeling Empowered
SPEAKER_01cool. Yes, uh, and what are some myths or misconceptions in your for the business? Yeah.
SPEAKER_00When um I have 30 years with my husband, and when we get married, it was hard for us to find one place to have everything, like one stop shop. So my daughter telling me about it, and then having the experience when we marry by church is when I thought it will be a good idea to have a place where you do one stop shop and you can find everything shoes, accessories, tuxedos, everything. Oh, but my main purpose is to like every woman who stops here, like feels beautiful, like feel feels empowered, like because everybody is different.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, and just embrace it. I love that. Yes.
Word Of Mouth Marketing And Real Life
SPEAKER_01Uh, so we know marketing is the heart of every business. Who are your target customers and how do you attract them?
SPEAKER_00I most of them are word of mouth. I'm no good doing marketing, and sometimes like maybe people think because we are uh own a business, we know everything, or we can hire like a very good marketing person, but not always it's like that. So I do my um reels, TikTok, Facebook, everything, but most of my customers are for word of mouth. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Have you ever thought about doing a podcast?
SPEAKER_00Yes, I do, but I don't know where to start. Yeah. Uh so what do you do for fun? For fun, just enjoy my kids because on the business I'm here basically the seven days, most of the day. So for fun, it's just enjoy my kids.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. And what what are the age ranges?
SPEAKER_0029, 27, 25, 16, and 12.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah.
What To Remember About The Boutique
SPEAKER_01Um, okay, Erica, can you please tell our listeners one thing they should remember about Barbie's boutique? What what thing can you repeat that? Yeah, one thing that uh our listeners should remember about Barbie's boutique.
