Well, that's exactly what happened to me once I learned how to flip the switch into the zone. Hey guys, welcome to the podcast. We're excited and can't wait to share a lot of stuff, especially how we even got to this point. It's going to blow your mind because it's blown our mind. And we just give all the glory to God.

Amen. You know, it's actually pretty interesting, you know, you say that, Shannon, because how this even came about and how this is even possible. I mean, if we just back up, guys, you need to understand that in 2016, I actually walked away from the game of golf for good. You know, I was frustrated, I was angry as a coach and as a player. I know some of you may be able to resonate with that because you know, this game, if we're going to be honest, it is a very frustrating game if we let it. It did eventually get to that place where I'll never forget it. We wrote about it in our book, In His Own Secrets. You know, what was so interesting is it came to a breaking point. I was working with this player. It was September. I remember like it was yesterday. Sun was setting over the trees, and we're on the range. I'm working with this player. It was so frustrating because this guy, I would go out and track him with Stroes gain data. We'd go do playing lessons, we'd be striping it on the range. Strots gain data showing that he should be low single-digit handicapper, but yet he goes plays in tournaments and he's shooting scores between 87 and 92, like it was his job. We had no answer. It got to the point where I said, Enough's enough. I'm sorry. We walked away, basically fired me. It had reached a boiling point for me. I'm a type A type personality. I want to help every player that comes to me. And yes, we had a lot of success in the golf school that I was running, but I still had to select few people that when they would go and play, they would have like great front nine scores, and then the back nine, it was total different animal, right? Or it's vice versa. They they start poorly and they finish strong. Or it was like, man, no matter what happened, they get to this one particular hole and it was their nemesis hole, and they kept messing it up. This was a pattern that I just kept wrestling with, wrestling with, not only as a coach, but also as a player, because I struggled with a lot of those same things. And finally, when I got to that player in September, I walked away. That night I was sending out resumes to different business opportunities. So I walked away. I started working at a well-known cellular communications company. I had no intention of recommended golf until this guy, who is my co-host on this podcast, ruined that for me. What do you want to say to that, Shen?

I want to say, thank God you tried to prove me wrong. Right? That's exciting. You know, here's the thing. My background is I was no champion speed skater and record holder. The differentiator was I when I was born, I was born club-footed. So everything didn't come when I say club-footed, I was severely club-footed. In other words, instead of my my feet almost looked like ice skates straight up and down, I had to have reconstructive surgery on both of my feet. The doctors told my parents I wouldn't be able to walk or run normal or anything like that. Where God came in was not even uh when after my surgery, probably I think I was in a cast for like six months. But during that time, I was out fishing with my grandfather. He had me out on a the pier. He would he would cast a reel and I would reel it in, and he would cast the reel and reel it in. Well, the fish grabbed it and pulled me into the water. Well, when the fish pulled me into the water, I literally came out of my body and I'd look back. I remember to this day, I look back and my body was totally limp.

Let's pause for a second. So you came out of your body and you're looking down and you're seeing your body in the water. Is that right?

Actually, it was the opposite. So I was going down, like I came out of my body going down, and I was looking up at my body. So it's a lot different than some of the other people's situations where they actually rise up. I actually went down and looked up, and my body was limp. And then behind it, I saw a bright light, a huge bright light. Then I saw a hand come through the bright light, and soon, as it as that hand touched me, I came back to life. And I and I say that because that's what my grandfather told me. I will never forget that as long as I live. Now, here's the thing. I remember I gave my life to Christ when I was 17 years old. And when I gave my life to Christ, I remembered like heard it just as clear as a bell. Uh that Jesus was the one that grabbed me that water, which I knew it. And I didn't share that with anybody because man, I was three years old. That scared the the daylights out of me, you know, and I I never took my my parents did not find this out until probably about 20 years ago. I finally came out and said something because it scared. I was like, well, nobody's gonna believe me, you know. But that's exactly what happened. And so, yes, I was national champion and record holder, but it didn't come easy. I also played my my background as playing soccer. I was semi-pro. I traveled all over the world, been to Russia, Germany, Holland playing soccer, played soccer in college and as well. But speed kidding is kind of what took me to a whole nother level. Not just that, but I trained over 146 national champions, eight world champions, three Olympians, one that actually got a bronze medal, and one that got a gold medal, not this past Olympics, but the one Olympics ago. Um, so in this journey, God has literally taken me to places that I never would have gone if I hadn't trusted him. And even how Bo and I met. Um, and Bo, do you want to describe how we we even met?

Yeah, it's kind of a funny story because my wife and I, we were moving to a new church. We just happened to sign up for this class being taught on how to pray effectively. Funny enough, the guy that's leading the class is Shannon. First session, I mean, he's sitting there and he's teaching, and I'm like, man, this guy is rooted really well. Like, I mean, this is pretty cool. I gotta get to know this guy a little more. And so I went up after the second week and I was like, hey, can we go to dinner? And we said, sure. We go to dinner. You know, guys got a funny sense of humor because you know, this is not what I intended to talk about over dinner, but we just started in casual conversation, asked him what he did. That's when he dropped his resume that he just shared a few minutes ago, all the people that he coached as far as world champions, Olympic medalists. And I was like, Man, that's a pretty impressive resume you got there, bud. How'd you do it? That's when he goes, Well, if you really want to know, I was able to get my speed skater to trick their bodies in the zone. And I laughed. I was like, You're full of it. I'm sorry if I you know come across as disrespectful, but you gotta understand, I walked away from you know the game of golf two years ago. Golf's the hardest sport in the world. The very thing that caused me to leave the sport, you're telling me that you've discovered a secret. Because if we really like step back and we take a look at it, I've read all the mental game books in the game of golf and many outside the game of golf in various different sports. All the sport psychologists, middle game coaches, they all talk about what the zone or flow state looks like. But nobody has ever found a step-by-step process on how to get there on demand. And Shannon's across the dinner table that night telling me that he's discovered it. That's why I laughed and I said, You're full of it. He pushed back. Look, you know what, it might work for a space game, but it's not gonna work for the game of golf. And he kept pushing me, kept pushing me. And finally he started like taking out his phone and he it was showing me different text messages of all his former, you know, world champions, Olympic medalists. And I was like, Okay, that's interesting. I was like, Shannon, you know, there's just no way to work for golf. But I was like, you know what, my my interest is, you know, pick just enough that I feel like I am the perfect candidate to prove you wrong. Here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna take everything you share with me tonight. I'm gonna go out and I'm not gonna practice. I'm not gonna hit warm-up balls on the range, I'm just gonna go straight to the first T, cold turkey, and that's what I'm gonna do. But guys, he had the last laugh because I go out and I play in the second half of that 2018, the eight rounds that I played, six out of eight, I actually went under par. And my handicap index when I walked away from the game of golf before I walked away was a 2.4 index. When I finished those eight rounds, my handicap actually had dropped down to a plus one point seven. My mind was blown away. That's amazing.

That's incredible. Thanks for proving me wrong, by the way. So, guys, you can't you can't make this story up. We met church and we were trying to get together to get to know each other, and I'm sitting there, it really makes no sense. I was operation manager at Gold's gym at the time, and he was working for Verizon. Now, what's interesting was I worked for Verizon too. You can't make that up either. And so this is how we knew that God literally put us to put us together. Because why in the world, if I'm trying to get to know Bo, right? That if this is not a God sent, why in the world would I even go into sharing the concepts of triggering my body to get into the zone for Bo to do that? Because this is literally how our business started was from that dinner. It was totally God ordained and God sent, and I thank him for it because without that, our business wouldn't be able to do it. And then, not just that, well, where we can help you, but we've helped, you know, that is our our mission is we want to help over 100,000 golfers, and we want you to be that a part of that statistic as well. And so we're we're excited for that.

I know that's the biggest thing that every golfer is looking for is how can I play more consistently? The number one issue for most golfers is inconsistency. It's gonna be an exciting journey that we're really excited about because ultimately, yes, we want to have more fun and we want to shoot low rounds and we want to be competitive and win more, but we also want you to grow, become a person that ultimately is a light to this world. It's no secret that this world is getting darker by the day. Ultimately, you know, when it gets darker, that's when the lights become brighter. We want you to be that light, and we're gonna show you how to do that as well. So, over the next few weeks, this is gonna be something that we're gonna be coming on here and giving you the tools and sharing different messages, bringing in guest experts, that's gonna ultimately close that gap to you playing your absolute best golf. But we also got some really exciting things that is gonna help you join the tribe. You know, if you haven't already heard this already, you know, one of the terms that you're gonna hear us say a lot is caveman golf. So we're gonna help you become a caveman golfer or a cave girl, a golfer. You know, it's funny because when you look at when you play your best round, and I want you, I want to invite you right now, if you look back at your absolute best round that you've ever shot in your life, you know, just go really quickly and remember that round. I guarantee you, the number one thing that is always the common denominator for when you play your best, it was that you played with no swing faults, you weren't overthinking about P1, P3, P7, you weren't doing any of that stuff where you got the elbow dropped in the slide, none of that stuff. It was C target, C ball, hit ball, rinse, repeat, right? That's what we're gonna show you how to do consistently, and not only that, we're gonna show you how to measure and track it. And so that's why you know we can't wait for this journey with you guys. Ultimately, it's gonna be fun.

Absolutely, you know, and I want to get real with you guys right now. When I say real, like both both of us, Bo and I, we hit rock bottom, so to speak, in the sports. Like when I was in speed skating, I hit rock bottom. And Bo, let's let's share our stories as far as like where we were and what we've done. If you want, you can go ahead and start. People's gonna be able to relate to your story, Bo, when you were a junior golfer going into college, the shift of what place, and then let's tell them some of the people that you work with. This right here is going to blow your mind because Bo's also been with the who's who in golf into the mainstream.

And that's why I don't I I don't believe in coincidences. Because, you know, what God is brought together, it's it's comical when you kind of look at it in it, but it's just amazing at the same time because if you look at my journey, you know, I started at a very young age. I had a dream to play on PJ Tour. I had a lot of success in junior golf, but when I got to high school, everything plateaued because I was doing what most of you are doing right now. You know, back then we didn't really have YouTube, but you know, I lived on Golf the Channel Academy Live, and yeah, I'm reading all the magazines and I'm studying all the tips and I'm trying to do like what's the next thing, right? Ultimately, what it did is it it made me worse. And so when I was freshman in high school, my game just really took a nosedive. Never really fully recovered. I actually played decent, but the problem was it cost me a chance to play at a high, you know, D1 school. I couldn't even really find anything in D2. So it was really D3 or low-tier D2 school. Or I go and learn from this guy, David Orr, at the time he was the director of instruction for the PGA program at Campbell University. He was already working with a few tour players at the time. And I was like, well, you know what? Why don't I just go down there, you know, get a business degree, do the golf manager program, but really go down there and study and learn under this guy, just teach myself and make that my reality. So I get down there, fast forward a year in, I become his intern. That was really interesting because this is when David makes the pivot and he starts doing putting research. I was a guy that helped him compile all the putting research. And if you don't know who David Orr is, well, he takes that putting research, goes to the Better Golf Through Technology Conference at MIT, presented, and then he gets on the radar of Sean Foley, and then they start talking. Then David gets hired by Justin Rose, and then the rest is history. You know, first player was Charlie Wee, just before Justin Rose, at the time, I think it was 2007. Charlie Wee was ranked 131 in putting. What was so fascinating is when you look at the Sam Putt Lab numbers that Charlie Wee had in that year, he was number one across the board. And at the time in David's Samputt Lab, he had 50 PGA tour players, Jim Fuhrer, Tiger Woods, many of them. At the time, Tiger was, I think, number two in the total putting category, and Charlie Wee is 131. Now, here's what's interesting. From technique, consistency, timing, I forgot the other one on the samputt lab that it measures. But at the time, he was like across the board, averaging 95%, and still to this day, I think he is still the highest ever tested. But yet, how does that make sense when on the Sam Putt lab, he's 131 in total putting on the PGA tour? Well, David started working with him on the skills, started working with him on belief, and then fast forward to next year in the summer of 2008, he rose to number three in total putting. To make that kind of a jump is unheard of on the PGA tour in that time span. So as a result of that, I got the notice of Sean, and that's what got him to start working with Justin Rose. And Justin Rose won US Open, then he won gold in Olympics. And David started working with a lot of tour players around the world. So, because of that relationship, I've been blessed to again know Mike and Andy's stack and tilt. Also, Lynn Blake with the Adolf Machine got to uh become really knowledgeable with the Mac O'Gree Morad system, and then also Sean Foley. So I've been surrounded by the world's best coaches. Now you have a better understanding of where I was as a coach. And back in 2016, when I walked away from the game, despite all that knowledge, I still wasn't able to perform as a player and also coach my players. That's that was the issue. That was a frustration for me. And then finally, when Shannon and I met over that dinner in 2018, this is when everything changed for me and as a coach, because when we started showing this to players that I coach, the very first player, let's be back up, we talk about this in the book. But my last round that I played, I played nine holes. Yes, no, it's the end of October. I played nine holes. And I shoot four under. Four under. And I lift out three additional putts for Bertie. I was so excited after that round. I go home and my wife's cooking dinner, she's making tacos. I'll never forget her face when I came in the door and I was like, honey, we gotta we're going back to golf and we're gonna start teaching this to our players. And she's looking at me like I got five eyeballs. And she's like, You are crazy. And the reason why she said that is because we were doing really well financially. You know, I was one of the top sellers up in the state of North Carolina. It made absolutely no sense whatsoever on paper to go back into the game of golf. But I was like, we stumbled across something that is going to be so powerful, so life-changing, so game-changing, that this is gonna change many people's games. Finally, after convincing, she agreed with me that if I could show one or two players that it works for them, not just me, that she would get on board. Well, guess who I called? I called the guy that fired me two years prior, and I was like, You got to come in. I'm gonna show you this. I want you to see what this does. So we spent a session covering everything that Shannon had worked with me on. I share it with him. The very next week he goes out in a CGA is Carolina Golf Association one-day tournament. He goes out and he shoots 76. And I'm texting him, I asked him, I was like, what do you think the difference was? Just to give benefit of the doubt. And he said, Bo, it was everything that you taught me on the mental side last week in our session together. You guys have to understand he had been stuck between that 87 and 92 scoring range in tournament play, like it was his job. He had never gotten anything lower than an 87 over the time frame that he and I work in, and he was still stuck there over the two years that he and I weren't working together. In fact, he was almost ready to quit and walk away from the game. So that was one example. The other guy that, again, I shared this in the book, and this is a guy that has probably one of the worst slices I've ever seen in a game of golf. We're working on the swing, his driver is slicing about 65 yards. We spend two lessons together. It's the end of I think it's beginning of November at this point. So after a second session, it's like toward the end of November, and he works at the post office. So as you guys know, post office busy seasons in December, obviously Christmas coming up. We got his slice from a technical standpoint. We got it reduced to about 20, 25 yards. But also, in that last lesson, I shared a lot of the principles that Shannon and I were working on. I don't see him until March, first week of March. And I had texted him over the course of those few months, just checking in. What was so interesting is that he told me that he had only played once and practiced twice. So I'm going into this March lesson, first lesson back after about four or five months not seeing him. You know, thinking that he's gonna be worse, right? Like anybody would be. Well, the first five to seven shots that he hits are these beautiful five-yard baby draws with his driver, and I'm looking at him like my wife did to me, like he had five eyeballs. And I'm like, How does this even make sense? Like you told me that you've only played once and practiced twice, but yeah, here you are, you're hitting these five-yard baby draws. Like, what are you even doing? And that's when he said, Well, Bo, you know, when I had downtime throughout my day at work, all I did was sit there and just mainly rehearse, you know, the correct motion over and over and over again. I was like, that is so cool. And so wife gets on board. It was actually one month later that we hosted the very first ever consistent golf summit. That was a huge success. We had over 13 golfer, 13,000 golfers register for that event. We had some big names that are part of it, like Sean Foley, Adam Young, Scott Fawcett. I mean, it was a huge list of amazing coaches and many that I consider friends that were part of that. We hosted the very first ever Indazineal challenge. We had over 142 golfers, I think. No, 131, sorry, uh, that went through that. And the average when we followed up with every one of them, the ones that we could. Contact, there was 113 of them, and they reported back the average score drop across all of them was 5.1 strokes over a course of about 45 days. So that was like the first you know proving ground, so to speak. And then we've just been off to the races since then. We're at general.

What are the statistics of somebody dropping strokes?

Well, I mean, we wrote about this in our book, but if you look at the National Golf Foundation data over the last 20 years, the average, as far as like golfers doing it the traditional way, doing it the traditional methods, like what most people are doing, studying, reading magazines, doing lessons, doing golf equipment upgrades, it's 0.1 strokes, is what the average is across the board.

Tell you what, it's a light bulb moment for anybody that's listening to this, you know, because my story is kind of similar to what Bo's was, and what my background, I played soccer and I was I was pretty fat. And I was so frustrated because with me and speed skating, every time we would do starts, meets it didn't matter, meets and practice or whatever, I would literally get last off the line and I'm like, what? And I was frustrated. I didn't know why. I felt like I was faster, but I wasn't sure until the light bulb moment for me was at the end of one of the sessions at the Roller Rink, there was a group of us. Now, here's the thing the team that I skated for, we had over 22 national champions. Okay, so this is like the who's who in each age category, from pro to you know, into age categories and everything like that. So the people that I was racing against, they were all fast. A lot of them had national records, and me, I'm I'm just you know trying to survive at that point, right? Like we we had our shoes on, and we're like, hey, let's let's let's do a race and run across the floor. There was that on your mark set, go boom, I hit it. I was beating them hands down every single time, but not by not just a little bit, but like a gap. Every single time. And I knew right then and struggled with, you know, even like what some of you guys are struggling with, you perform good on the range, but yet when you get on the course, there's a disconnect. Well, that was my same thing in speed skating was on shoes, I can perform at the highest level. But when I had my skates on, there was a huge disconnect.

And so then I want to speak something really quick because a lot of people that are listening to this that are golfers. That is like the the equivalent of you look amazing when you take a practice swing beside the ball, but yet when you actually take a swing, it's a totally different golfer. That's that's what Shannon's doing in speed skating, guys.

Yeah, yeah. It was ugly, and it was one of those things where it frustrated me to an extent to where I started reading all the mental books in different areas when it comes to mental performance, and that's when I came across where you can trigger your body to get in the zone. It does incorporate mental imagery, very similar. And I ran across a study called Pavlov's Dogs. But here's the thing about Pavlov's dogs: if you're not familiar with it, if you've taken psychology one-on-one, you you've learned a lot about Pavlov's dogs. And when the light comes on or a buzzer comes on, food would draw, and the the dog would salivate and eat. But here's the other thing, too. One of the things that I've learned over time was this uh, you all have a dog and you say, Hey, you want to go outside? What does a dog do when you say you want to go outside? And he's learned what that means. The dog will start jumping up and down and start getting excited. It's like that's a trigger that that happens. You want to go outside, boom, totally different dog than what you just saw, right? And the same thing is this is the only system on the planet, by the way. The only system on the planet that can trigger your body on now to get in a zone. And so I started doing that, getting mental reps in. So that's what that was what the game changer was for Bo and his clients at the time was they're getting mental reps in away from the course. If you're trying to do this on the course and not get mental reps in, because your brain is like a brain account, I like to use it that way. If you're not making deposits in your brain account, how can you make withdrawals on the time when it comes for you to perform when it matters the most? You're not going to be able to do that. And so Bo is getting those, and that's what I was doing. I was getting my mental reps in, and then within literally within one month, I started when it starts in practice, and then I became national champion and record holder. I would win every start, and not just when, there was a lot of times where I could place myself off the line wherever I wanted to. Now that means very fast. I can win it, or if I wanted to get third, if it was a longer race or you know, something like that, I could do that. But see, I knew that was the game changer, and then that's when I started sharing that when I got into coaching, and I'll never forget, God blew my mind. I had there was one year I had nine skaters go out to try out for the world team, and all nine made the team that has never been done before. That blew my mind. And one of the reasons was I showed them how to do this, how to trigger the body getting zoned. But don't get me wrong, and Bo's gonna attest to this too. Look, you gotta have both. There's so many studies that have been done when it comes to physical training and then only mental training, and then doing physical and mental training both, where you do physical and mental, your performance is gonna skyrocket. And so obviously, we had the physical training that because I got into the science of everything as well, so all that helped us, but just mind-blowing to see all this take place, and then how God put Bo and I together, where we we have similar backgrounds, but totally different sports. And see, this is the challenge because we know beyond a shadow of a doubt that golf is the hardest mental sport in the world. You've heard this said over and over and over again, right? By all the top coaches in the world, it don't matter what sport it is, they're gonna say, what a sport. It's 90% mental and 10% physical. Well, my question to you and everyone that's listening to this why are we spending 100% of the time on only 10% of the game? We've got to get the mental reps in to incorporate it because that's when you're gonna get your your biggest gains. Because look, what course are you playing every single day? You play this course every single day, no matter what part of the country you're in. You're like, wait, what are you talking about? It's the six-inch course between your ears. That's the course that you're playing. Okay, you're playing against yourself a lot of the times. You may have negative thoughts, you have other all these things that are going in that can actually affect your coordination and everything like that. We're not gonna really get into that today, but we're gonna talk a lot about that in some of the later podcasts. There's gonna be a lot of good things we're gonna be covering over the next uh few weeks on this podcast. You know, the biggest thing that we just want you to do, one, definitely review the show. You know, our goal is we don't want people to quit this game. It's an amazing game, it's a game that resembles life. We want you to not only learn and incorporate some of these principles that we're gonna be teaching, but also when we bring in these world's best coaches as guest experts, you know, there's a purpose and a reason behind that as well, because we're gonna cover all the different parts of the game. More importantly, show you how to become the all-around complete player that you know you can be and you're striving for. You just don't know the actual path forward on how to do that. And we're gonna show you the shortcut.
