Astrologers often refer to Neptune as the higher octave of Venus. And I think a lot of people would believe that that means that there's more romance or more beauty or more spirituality. And to some extent that could be true, but I'm not sure that that's what it really means. I think Venus teaches us how to love another person, and Neptune is teaching us how to love beyond ourselves completely. I believe that human evolution is moving in the direction of learning how to love responsibly and learning how to love universally. Venus asks us questions like, How do I build a healthy relationship? While Neptune is saying, How can my heart become large enough to embrace all of life, everything that I find in it? It isn't really just a difference in the degree or the amount of love, it's a difference in consciousness. I want to start with Venus and talk about how much of astrology is concerned with the us becoming an individual. The Sun is uh is about our identity, uh, Mars is certainly about our ability to take actions and courage. Mercury is about communication and understanding, and Saturn is about our growing knowledge that we have responsibility towards ourselves and others in the world, even if that just means employers and family, we still eventually come to realize that we have a responsibility to take care of certain things. All of those things help us to become stronger, healthier people. But Venus introduces something that's very different because it reminds us that life is not only about me. It reminds us that there's an us and that through Taurus, which rules Venus, Venus teaches us values and ethics. Why do I care enough about someone else to love them? Why would I behave in an ethical way towards them? Those things are based on love. What deserves my loyalty, right? It's very Taurus. And through Libra, which also rules Venus, the uh the expanded question: how do I create fairness and compromise and diplomacy? And how do I recognize that another person's experiences matter just as much as my own? Venus, together, is where love begins to reshape our ego, and that's super important. Then comes Neptune. And if Venus is teaching us relationship, relationship to the other, and loving relationship with ourself, Neptune is actually dissolving the walls around relationships. It's why Neptune rules Pisces because Pisces is not your basic water sign, it's not simply emotions, it's empathetic, it is compassionate, and empathy is very different from affection. Affection says I love you, empathy says I feel you. And Venus can love people that are close. Neptune eventually loves everybody, including the stranger, the wounded, the forgotten person, even the person who actually doesn't deserve it. We feel love in that realm because love is love. There it does nothing else but love. And when we're in a pure state of Neptunian transcendence, we rise above our own ego to see that spirit moving behind all things loves all things. And this is not because boundaries disappear, but because separation itself softens. Neptune actually expands the circle of compassion around all things until there is no obvious edge. So there's a little short thing I want to mention, even about the symbologies, the glyphs, like Venus is the circle above the cross, and that's about consciousness being above matter. The cross is a symbol of matter, and the circle is the symbol of the sun. So consciousness above matter. But Neptune is the crescent above the cross, and that's where the subconscious, the moon, the intuitive heart, the invisible current that connects us all becomes above matter. It's like Venus saying, can spirit love another? While Neptune says, can consciousness remember that we're never really truly separate from anything? And can we love everything? I think this is the direction of human evolution, certainly, obviously, not simply becoming stronger or wiser or even more loving, because Venus is teaching us the responsibility we have in relationships, but Neptune is showing us that we need compassion. And one creates, I think, an ethical kind of love, but the other creates a sacred kind of love, empathy, the sacred love. And that's why Neptune is called the higher octave, not because it replaces Venus, but because every genuine act of love eventually is arising from compassion.
