Hello, my name is Aiden, and welcome to this week's weekly news recap, including the following stories: SGA Election Controversy, All People of the Earth Day, Fishing Alerts, and lastly, Student Concerns with the Non-Traditional Student Program here on campus. Don't forget to watch this week's broadcast to hear the entirety of the stories mentioned above. Starting off with this year's SGA election controversy, brought to us by Izzy Spence. An individual running for SGA's executive president faced an intense wave of controversy after announcing his run. After SGA's announcement regarding those running for the next year's office, a post regarding one candidate's characters was released on Berea College's Facebook page. This information quickly spread and became a major focal point in conversation around campus. After Cheryl Nixon responded online to the culminating issue, she faced backlash from a number of students who said that she might be silencing people from sharing their personal stories about other. Due to the backlash, she responded to these allegations, both about her and the candidate, stating that from what she was told the issue had become somewhat racially motivated and that she isn't a part of these online communities, so she doesn't understand the entirety of the story. Izzy followed up these comments with an email conversation between her and the current president of SGA, Abraham, who responded saying, with ensuring a free, fair, and secure election for brands, and we delivered just that.
SPEAKER_01However, it is important to recognize that our internal structures and policies regarding elections have left us no concrete way to manage the magnitude or scope of these circumstances. And will simultaneously give future elections committees more concrete guidelines and jurisdiction to make more disqualification and related decisions. The FGA is the largest democratically elected student representative organization on this campus, and we are committed to ensuring students' voices and perspectives continue to be elevated even in difficult times. This election was decided by the student body, and we will always fight to ensure that students' votes decide.
SPEAKER_00That mostly sums it up. Seeing who is even running this because obviously when you run for ask for a candidate, you don't really see who that person is. You just submit it and write what you want to, I guess, do. But it could be background checks and like what has the student really done, seeing if there's anything like involved with them in the previous matter, let's say. Like one could be title nine, that's mostly hidden underscore score records. So we could probably see something to some capacity of that where we address something like that. But mostly it's in the future where we see how the committee goes and if the Senate will agree on it, of course, because it all comes down to them as well.
SPEAKER_04Thank you all for voting for us and trusting us to like be able to like continue on what um Abraham and Christina did. Um we intend to use our positions wisely and to represent you very well and to do what we promised to do.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'd say um, you know, thank you for voting for us, but also thank you for like remaining strong during the very unfortunate events that transpired, and obviously the hard times that came of it. Obviously that opened up a lot of discussion for issues around Berea, and obviously it's hard to talk about it, but I'd say I'm happy that the campus is obviously opening up to it more and is more looking forward to creating change and not staying silent on it. So I'd say I'm very thankful that they're opening up to change and want us to kind of lead it. So I'd say I'm very happy with the students voting in us in and trying to make the campus much better, I'd say.
SPEAKER_02That being all for Izzy's story. Next up we have Quinn discussing the coming events on April 8th for this year's All People of the Earth Day celebration.
SPEAKER_03On Tuesday, April 7th, Outdoor Adventures is allowing students to camp out with them at 6 p.m. Wednesday morning, there are multiple breakfast options such as a cookout on alumni fields, coffee and donuts for teachers at the CDO, and breakfast at the dining hall. From 8 a.m. to 12 p.m., there are multiple different cervix activity options, such as tree planting at Blue Ridge parking lot, mural painting at Clover Bottom Cottage, and invasive species removal in Brushy Fork. After lunch, there is the Brear Big Swap in the Barrett Lounge, Haywagon rides on alumni fields, and tabling on alumni patio. That evening there is the sunset celebration. Douglas Sroni has its opening address, and after, there are a multitude of musical performances and dance performances. And ending of the night is the bonfire and s'mores get together, ending All Peoples of the Earth Day.
SPEAKER_02Next up, we have Jessica Powell discussing the rapidly growing number of phishing alerts we've had here on campus this year. Over the past several weeks, students have been targeted by phishing scammers via email, text, and even fake account verification requests. She then discusses the various emails from IT faculty, Philip Longsden, regarding these scammers. She attempted to reach out but received no response prior to this broadcast. If you were unsure of a message, you can send a screenshot of the message to the Berea College Help Desk, and they will help you decipher whether or not this is a dangerous link. Lastly, we have another story from BCNR reporter Quinn. With student concerns with the non-traditional student program here on campus, following a post regarding these programs posted on once again the Berea College Facebook Community Group. Quinn then begins to go into detail about this resurfaced post as students began to voice a plethora of issues with the non-traditional program, stating that it has become quite controlling. Quinn then reached out to the associate director of the non-trad program to hear what she has to say regarding these growing concerns. She did not respond to the set email.
