Soul Medicine...HEALING OUT LOUD
High-Functioning vs Regulated: Why Success Can Hide Dysregulation
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode of Soul Medicine: Healing Out Loud, Angela will explore the critical difference between being high-functioning and being truly regulated.
Many people move through life appearing successful—meeting expectations, managing responsibilities, and holding everything together. But beneath that performance, there can be exhaustion, disconnection, and unrecognized nervous system dysregulation.
This episode invites you to slow down and notice what’s happening internally, not just what’s being accomplished externally.
Through reflection and guided awareness, you’ll begin to identify:
• Where you are functioning well but not feeling well
• What you may be pushing through without noticing
• How productivity can mask deeper patterns of survival
High functioning may keep life moving.
But regulation keeps you connected to yourself while you move.
Because true healing isn’t about doing more—
it’s about responding differently.
Regulation must precede resolution.
Thank you for listening to Soul Medicine: Healing Out Loud.
This is a space for reflection, awareness, and intentional living.

Hello, and welcome back to Soul Medicine Healing Out Loud.
SPEAKER_00Before we get started, let's place our feet flat on the floor.
SPEAKER_01Feel the ground beneath your feet. Be present. In this moment. We're going to take a deep breath in through the nose for four.
SPEAKER_00We'll hold for four and then exhale, allowing it to be longer than your inhale.
SPEAKER_01Deep breath in three two hold three two exhale what are you noticing in your body right now? Have your shoulders relaxed down away from your ears? Or is there tension? We're not fixing. You're not broken. We're not judging. We are simply welcome to episode five.
SPEAKER_00Actually cost internally.
SPEAKER_01What I've noticed in high achieving clients. They're excelling at work. They may be educated.
SPEAKER_00They're in management positions or executive leadership.
SPEAKER_01And they come because they're overwhelmed, they're exhausted, and they're frustrated, disregulated, and they don't even know it. Disciplinary organizer, meal prep person, therapist, first aid person. They may even be taking care of an elderly parent.
SPEAKER_00Oh, I got it, I got it. We often sound like two-year-olds trying to tie our shoes.
SPEAKER_01I want to do it myself. Equating productivity with. See, look at what I'm doing. I'm okay. Often answering.
SPEAKER_00How are you doing? With oh, I'm good. I'm good. I'm on my grind.
SPEAKER_01I'm doing the damn thing. I'm holding it all together. What does that actually cost internally? High functioning is often praised by people on the outside, even when it's unsustainable.
SPEAKER_00And that is often the reason we stay in that state constant survival mode.
SPEAKER_01I wonder if the thought is Can they see me? Do they see the chinks in my armor?
SPEAKER_00Feeling the way that Atlas looks holding up the globe. Like in any moment, I'm gonna spill all the contents of the earth out with contradicting messages running through their mind.
SPEAKER_01I can't keep going, but I have to because they're looking at me, they're depending on me.
SPEAKER_00When I think about what dysregulation looks like in someone who is still performing well. An early morning, Saturday and Sunday in the gym working out.
SPEAKER_01You can be successful and still be disconnected from yourself. Emotional suppression, limited rest.
SPEAKER_00But often it is simply survival that has become efficient.
SPEAKER_01Looks like getting things done, being reliable, dependable, meeting expectations, even when they're simply our own expectations pushing through the outside. But internally it may not feel that way. In this pattern, what does it cost? Burnout? That silent quitting that happens on the inside and breeds disconnection, moving further and further away from your true self, which then breathes relational strain.
SPEAKER_00If you're not being your true self, it's not just felt by you. I know you're thinking, really? One more task to do?
SPEAKER_01Regulation is not about doing more. Allowing pauses instead of quick, yes, I can. Choosing intentional responses.
SPEAKER_00Regulation allows you to function without abandoning yourself.
SPEAKER_01These questions. Simply notice before pushing through. While you move and over time, that difference, yeah, it matters. Has a time and a place remaining there when that time has passed, and you're in a different place, keeps us from enjoying an abundant life.
SPEAKER_00In upcoming conversations, we will begin to explore what it looks like to live this work, not simply understand it.
SPEAKER_01Thank you for listening.
