In this episode of Dad, Please, we’re covering a little bit of everything — from pop culture moments to our first concert of the year: Cardi B’s Little Miss Drama Tour in Houston. We share what we’re currently into this week, then... a simple dinner conversation turns into a full-on soup discussion, followed by our Chopped-style challenge. We wrap things up with a generational debate: would Cardi B thrive more in the '90s or the early 2000s? — and a blind ranking of her songs that may or may not go completely off track. Grab a snack, get comfortable, and join the conversation.
Hello and welcome to Dad Please, the podcast where a dad and daughter talk about the things we love and the things we definitely don't always agree on. From concerts and city adventures to books, movies, and our favorite foods, each episode is full of stories, laughter, and a little generational debate.
Speaker 2I'm Hamlin, the dad, and I'm Alex, the daughter. Together we're exploring our favorite places, sharing what we're reading and watching, trying new foods, and of course, telling more dad jokes than anyone actually asks for. So grab a snack, get comfortable, and join the conversation.
SpeakerWelcome to Dad Please. Welcome to Dad Please. It's me, Alex.
Speaker 2And it's me, Dad. And I was just told right now not to look at her. I'm talking to her. That's a bit dramatic, Dad.
SpeakerAnyways, let me throw you the tea of today's pop culture world. Kanye and Kim Kardashian.
Speaker 2Oh, you and these Kardashians.
SpeakerI'm obsessed, I know. But Kanye did write in a recent post. I can't wish her the best because she would end up with me.
Speaker 2And it's so typical Kanye.
SpeakerVery typical Kanye West. But in other news, our news, our lives, starting off the week strong, I did go visit my local library. Don't forget to support your local libraries, guys. And I picked up a book. It actually was featured in the Good Morning America Book Club. The book is called The Secret Lives of Murderers' Wives by Elizabeth Arnott.
Speaker 2You're gonna tell us what that's about, though, right? You're not just gonna leave it hanging.
SpeakerOf course. So the book synopsis, quick little hunt into the book. It is set in the summer of 1966. It follows Beverly, Elise, and Margot, three women whose husbands were convicted killers, bounded together by scandal and public scrutiny. The unlikely trio forms a friendship while trying to rebuild their lives. When a new series of murders shocks their community, the women decide to investigate themselves, believing that their experience in living with killers may give them insight needed to catch one.
Speaker 2That seems interesting. So how far are you in a book so far?
SpeakerI'm actually almost done. And without ruining anything, it's very good, very thrilling. I'm a very big crime junkie crime fan. And to see from the wives of killers is a very interesting take. I do applaud the author of this book. It is her debut novel, Elizabeth Arnot. And I highly recommend if you're into criminal minds, Law and Order, SVU, it's very interesting to see the other side of the killers' wives and their private lives.
Speaker 2And those are all your shows. You love those. You watch those all the time. So if you who would you recommend this book to?
SpeakerLike I know you said people who like shows like that, but is there anybody like in particular like I also think that this book is very much I don't want to say for women, but it very it speaks strongly to women's friendships and women's fiction. So if you're into literary fiction, crime novels, I would definitely recommend. It's definitely not a romance novel. So for you romance lovers, if you want to go outside to draw on your pick up this book, but not a romance novel.
Speaker 2And you were able to get that at the library.
SpeakerYes, my local library. Please go support your local libraries. I mean, I love buying a book and rewarding myself every time I finish, but it was $15 and I am a little cheat.
Speaker 2A little cheat.
SpeakerA lot cheat. So for sure, go support your local libraries. I picked it up there. It's always good to keep them open and in business. But speaking of, what are you into this week?
Speaker 2I am playing a game on the Nintendo. I did a lot of research for this to try to get ready for this podcast. So I did research by playing this video game. I'm playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3, it's an older game. They have more it's an it's an older game, but I just started playing it. I'm always playing like Madden or I'm still currently working on Spider-Man. It's just when you become an adult, you can't play your games as much as you used to. So right now I'm just playing Marvel Ultimate Alliance.
SpeakerSo what is I'm definitely not a video game girl. Most video games I play is Mario, and that's it.
Speaker 2So it's basically a um it's a it's a beat up, it's a beat up game. I think everybody, some people liked it, some people did not. I love it so far. You get to pick different people that you get to play with on the teens, like Spider-Man, you can play with Thor. You can play I started off with The Guardians of the Galaxy, which I love The Guardians of the Galaxy. You have some commentary that people come in. I think is, you know, for me, it's a very fun game. It's very relaxing. It's not something that I have to think too much about.
SpeakerIs it I'm a Marvel fan too. I watch the movies, see the TV shows. Does it follow a storyline or is it in its own category?
Speaker 2It's kind of like in its own category. They're trapped in a jail cell. The Guardians of the Galaxy, some kind of way, got into jail and they're trying to get out and they're trying to work their way out, and then more superheroes come in, and then that's how you get to choose and pick from people. I'm still in the the first area where I can pick people. So I've just been playing with the Guardians of the Galaxy so far. I like the different characters. Spider-Man came in to try to help us, but I couldn't play with them yet.
SpeakerOh, okay, okay. He is obsessed with video games. But other than that exciting stuff of our week, we actually had a top moment of the month where we went to see Cardi B. His favorite artist.
Speaker 1I love Cardi B.
SpeakerVery exciting. We actually have one of her albums with us. I'm very into the vinyl records, have the whole vinyl player and everything. This is her album, Invasion of Privacy. Now we both have our own songs that we like. My favorite is Ring, featuring Kalani.
Speaker 2Favorite is Get Up 10.
SpeakerYes, and she did play, I believe, both songs at the concert.
Speaker 2So the Yet Up 10 was she did more, it was like the beginning when she was coming out.
SpeakerYeah, it was kind of like a little intro. She did play Ring in one of her sections, which we will definitely be getting into. You will see some of our surprise guests that she brought out. So the Cardi B concert was actually here in Houston, Texas at the Toyota Center. That's the one we went to on March 4th.
Speaker 2Yeah, our first concert of the year. We have a few this year. Her first concert ever was a Cheetah Girls concert with Hannah Montana. So, and ever since then, she's been hooked. We saw some high school musicals. We she taught Tim McRaw. She was really sick. She doesn't remember that, but she was a baby and she was sick.
SpeakerBut I would like to say that this concert was a little more for him this time than it was for me.
Speaker 2Yeah, because you know, like Alex said, I'm huge, Cardi B fan. I love Cardi B. Like I said, she could have walked out there, sat on the stage, rapped, and I would have been happy. But she definitely didn't do that. She was a whole vibe. The whole concert was really, really great. It was an amazing concert, basically a theatrical show.
SpeakerVery much so. But let us start at the beginning from when we entered the Toyota Center. Speaking from previous experiences, how the Toyota Center runs is very well. Security, you know, make sure you bring your clear bag in or at least a small wallet-size bag.
Speaker 2All backpacks. They will not let you in the back.
SpeakerYeah, and no backpacks at all. When we first got there, I'm a big person who loves to get concert t-shirts. That's my favorite thing to get from concerts. Memories of the concert, not just the pictures of the tickets. It's a concert shirt. Make sure you you have cash, guys, and money in your in your bank because it's pretty pricey. Yeah. Very pricey. I think I paid like $45 for my shirt. She also had hoodies and sweater.
Speaker 2So way more than $45.
SpeakerVery much so. But the theme of the concerts was schoolgirl theme. I did not follow the theme, not because I'm a rebel, but just because I couldn't find a school girl theme outfit. I went for a different look. But that is the vibe of the night, guys.
Speaker 2I didn't do school girl theme for obvious reasons, but yeah, no.
SpeakerBut you know, that's the vibe you want to go with. That is Cardi B's concert vibe. When we after we purchased our stuff, you know, I was very sick, couldn't get drinks. He's not a drinker, but like I said, very, very expensive. But one thing we do love to do at concerts, which I could not get this time. At the tall yelder center, it's dip and dots. We love dipping dots.
Speaker 2Yeah, dip and dots. It used to be when I was younger, they called it ice cream of the future. That's showing my age as well. But yeah, dipping dots. I got some and I started to get two just to eat in honor of her, but I felt like that would have been just wrong.
SpeakerYeah, so he got his dip and dots, and we went to our seat.
Speaker 2We we sat on the, which is it's kind of on the left side of the concert. We usually sit on the right side for whatever reason. I don't know why. We usually get seats on the right side when we go to Toyota Center. It was really cool. There were two guys between us, and then one of my really good friends, one of my best friends from work. Her and her friend were there and two seats. So we got to hang out with them, and it was it was a lot of fun. It was it was just, I mean, again, I can't say it enough. Cardi was amazing.
SpeakerIt was very fun. Now, usually, so she didn't have an opener for this concert. Now we got there a little late, but it was a DJ that was playing. And when we got there, he was pretty good. He was doing a really good job from what we heard.
Speaker 1He played some Selena.
SpeakerYeah, he did. He played a lot of a good mixture, variety of music. And then Cardi B did come out for us. She came out at 9 p.m. I know other people were saying 8:30.
Speaker 2Some people said she came out at 8:30. She came out in Houston at 9.
SpeakerAt 9 p.m. for us. Now that may vary in different cities, but that's the time she came out for us. She opened with a bang. I could tell you that.
Speaker 2Yeah, she came out to Dead, which is probably one of my favorite songs on the album. And get no, no, Get Up 10 was what she came out on. Dead and Get Up 10 was what she came out, but it was the DJ was like it was just playing in a music. And then she came out and did her first song.
SpeakerWhich was Hello, I believe. That was her first song. And her concert was broken down into six different sections.
Speaker 2Yeah, six different acts. The show was about two hours, and she performed about 36 songs of her songs, mixed some of her newer hits with her big hits, and she did a lot of songs. And because Cardi has a lot of songs because she's been on so many mictape, on so many different artists' pages, songs. So she was able to do like 36 songs, and it was about two hours. And she did songs like she did money, she did up. Yeah, wow. She did House out, I love outside, and she did dead. My favorite thing is when she did, you know, what she say, you know, I cried all those years, nobody called me up, like those tears running down my face. She better be faulty. And I can't say the other word because, you know, love the Lord.
SpeakerTrue fan right here, and telling you, like, if he we should have done the meet and greet, he would have loved to meet Kari B. Her, I mean, her stage, her props were amazing. She had like this veil kind of looking thing come down when she was singing Ring and Be Careful. I mean, she was on some angel wings in the air. One of my favorite portions of the concert was when she kind of did her Latin section. So she did a lot of those songs.
Speaker 2Like she was celebrating her Dominican room. She did Taki Haki. She did what was the other song? She did. She did, she did a pretty, I mean, she everything. Yeah, Bodega Baddie. That was really good. It's just the show was just set up so nicely, the way that she did things, the way she transitioned, her costumes were amazing.
SpeakerOh, beautiful costumes.
Speaker 2Yeah, the hip hop shoe with like a Broadway style production, a giant dance party. I don't know how Cardi did it after having a baby three months ago, but she was out there killing it. She didn't look tired. She made sure her you knew her mic was on and she was rapping because she and what you think she was using, like lip sticking, she was she was working.
SpeakerVery impressive, I will say, for especially for a rap concert. I mean, she really did put on a big show. And then during the in-between acts, she did have like she did do a twerk challenge. So if any of you baddies out there can twerk, she got on that camera. She also did the DJ also played some of the songs that weren't played during the concert, like some of her hits that weren't able to make it into the set list. So that was really cool that that was during the breaks while she was changing costumes.
Speaker 2Um, her costume changes were pretty quick, though.
SpeakerVery quick, yeah. We weren't waiting for long. And then we did have some big surprises.
Speaker 2We did. I can tell you, one of the loudest concerts that we've ever been to was probably last year when we went to see the weekend. It was really loud when we saw Beyonce as well. But when we saw the weekend, it was like really, really loud. You can barely hear. Alex Bond was like telling her that it was too much noise. That was one of the loudest concerts we've ever been to until we went to Cardi B. And she brought out Meg the Stallion. And when I tell you you couldn't hear anything in that stadium, anything. Like it was crazy. I I don't think I sat down the whole night.
SpeakerIt was so good. I mean, Meg being there. I mean, we were all excited. She brought her out for what. She did also have another special guest, Rob 49, on her on that money song. So she it was a really good production. I mean, she really brought out the fireworks, literally and figuratively.
Speaker 2I think like she'd been bringing different people out at different concerts.
SpeakerYeah.
Speaker 2But to bring Meg out in Houston is crazy because people love Meg. Bun B was at the concert. He was in the crowd because she and she talked about him, but Liza was there. Oh, yeah. And if you buddy to bring Meg out, she did one song that when I tell you, as loud as it was, it was not it. When Meg came out, the roof blew off of the Toyota Center. It was crazy.
SpeakerYeah. And I know she's been bringing out like other people. I know she's brought out her kids too for some of the concerts. I think she actually did bring out Kalani for one of the concerts, if I'm sure. I'm not sure which one. But I mean, like I said, it's so nice that she brought them out. But by herself, Hardy killed it. She really did such a great job. Now, don't hate us, but we are the type of concert people that leave a little early.
Speaker 2We do.
SpeakerThat traffic.
Speaker 2Even though we're from Houston, we don't deal with traffic. So we left on Boudak Yellow. We heard, we were able to hear some of it on our way out, but we left and my friend left at the end, and we beat our home by like 45 minutes, an hour.
SpeakerIt was crazy. And they're doing so much construction downtown. And honestly, I'm glad we left early because my feet were killing me. That's the price you pay for being cute. I was wearing some high-heeled boots and it was the devil on my feet. It was horrible.
Speaker 2Or we were trying to run out of. She was like, Dad, I can't go that bad. Slow down, but we were trying to hurry up and get out of there. Shout out to the people who post set list online because they let us know when it's timed about.
SpeakerAnd where we usually park, that's behind an Asian restaurant. It was $40 this time. I mean, every person you go see, the price is different, but that's usually our parking spot. It's right across from the Toyota Center. Very easy to exit. It's right by the exits of downtown. So highly recommend. I don't try to sell our parking spot when we go, but that is a good spot to park by, especially if you don't want to park in the Toyota actual center.
Speaker 2Yeah, you walk right across the street, walk right through the parking lot, and there's a door to go in and then you come back out. And every time we go and we try to park there, we actually parked across the street in one concert, but most of the time we're always there. And it's easy to get out when there's no construction. Yeah, it's actually really easy to get on the freeway and come home. But it was real early because it was getting it was gonna be crazy getting out of my parents said it took them forever to get out of downtown.
SpeakerBut we enjoyed the concert overall. We would definitely see her again. So pretty much a thousand percent we would see her again. But we do have a little special rating system we like to do. So dad's gonna go ahead and explain it before we rate the concert overall.
Speaker 2So we base the concert on everything. We look at the costume, we look at the time. A lot of times, but we look at the beginning act, the people who come out, even if it's just the DJ. We did Bad Bunny, he had a good DJ when we were there. So we do a little bit of all of that and we rate the you know the dance and the entertainment, how she interacts with the crowd. And Cardi B definitely interacts with the crowds. Lost the joke. Yeah, talk to you. She talks crazy to you. She's funny. She's literally like she's who you see on TV.
SpeakerYes. And one thing I will admit, I never understand how singers remember the city they're in. Like, I wonder if they're gonna slip up, but she said Houston the whole time. And I I'm always shocked by that.
Speaker 2Yeah, I even I follow her on social media. So she's really funny because she said she made the comment, I'm gonna gotta get out of Houston. Because these people got me so messed up here, I might even make my Austin show. So she was like, These people in Houston are crazy. So she said she had to get back on the bus and try to go.
SpeakerSo it was not with two ourselves in the our own horn, but we are the best city in Texas.
Speaker 2Houston's the best. But let everybody tell you different if they do, they line. They just wish they could be here.
SpeakerSo very true.
Speaker 2So we rate them, we base it on, you know, a one through five star. The five stars, we call that the Jackson Five because essentially there's five members. Not that we think any group is better or a person is better. And these are people that we've actually pro that we've seen, or that, you know, or for other reasons. So I saw the Jackson Five. Not me. I wasn't alive. She wasn't alive. Best concert I've ever been to, hands down. The Jackson Five was amazing. We ranked four stars or Coldplay because there's four members of Coldplay. We saw Coldplay together in El Paso. I had, I honestly, I didn't really listen to Coldplay until Alex took me to that. We gave three stars for Destiny Child because even though there were four members at one time, at the end, the members at the end it was three. Um and we saw Beyoncé, so that's why we put Destiny Tile. She was amazing, amazing, amazing. She's everything that everybody says she is. We two stars, UGK. Number three UGK. Rest in peace, Pimp C. But you know, Trill Burgers that's had one of those, you know, tonight. And this Texas, baby, you gotta reprehend Texas. Two members of that group, so UGK and then one star is Ed Sharon. Not that we think Ed Sharon is one star. I don't know really because I haven't met this concert. Alec did, she did, she went with I mean.
SpeakerOh, here we go again. We're gonna go later this year together, guys. So don't let that fool you. He'll be going to see Ed Sheeran. Ed Sheeran was great in concert, so he'll get to see that.
Speaker 2Yeah, so you know, I I'm still living up. But Alec thought you're Sheeran, so that's how we rank him based on that. So based on our our ratings, I would probably give Cardi B probably a Jack than five. She was amazing.
SpeakerYeah, she was really good. And don't get me wrong, girl, Cardi B, I was a little sad that she came out at nine in the beginning, but she came out swinging. So I was like, you know, she's forgiving, but definitely put on an amazing show. I would say a good first concert of the year, yeah, for sure.
Speaker 2Yeah, definitely would go see her again. I tell people I rate people based on if I would go see them again. If I would go see them, I would probably have gone to Austin as T Car to be the next night. That's how good she was. I don't ever, you know, like people work very hard on their craft, so uh, we would never just koo-poo on anybody's craft. But Cardi was everything that hoped that she was and more.
SpeakerSo she was so good. I mean, I just loved, I mean, I think even when she was going through her sections, it was kind of like I want to say emotionally. Like she did say, like, you know, we're gonna get sad now, which her little section would be careful and reading. But then she did go to like, let's get violent now. So she really showcased her emotions, most definitely. And she really put in all her heart, her heart into that show. And it was amazing.
Speaker 2I think it was so it was sold out. We had a yeah, it would it was packed. It was tacked, and it was so funny because the guy who was sitting by me, he's really nice, real quiet, didn't say much. But when I tell you Cardi B came out, when I tell you that men turned up, it was like loud and yeah, like I don't think people really sat the whole concert. Every phone she sent. No, I think was bathing.
SpeakerThe only time people sat was like during her costume changes, and then we all got right back up. The energy was great.
Speaker 2Yeah, she did. I mean, she did so 36 songs. And she did she did tomorrow, the Glorilla version, she killed that.
SpeakerYeah, she did Latina.
Speaker 2Yeah, she did her Brutal Marshall.
SpeakerGirls like you.
Speaker 2Yeah, she did uh Pretty and Petty. She was feeling that song. Just an amazing, amazing performer. And I would go see her again and again and again.
SpeakerYes, and her set list is out there for people who like to look at set lists. We don't like to be surprised by the songs. Like we said earlier, we love to know people's set lists beforehand and we applaud the people who put in those songs ahead of time so we can see what we're getting into essentially. But her set list is on there.
Speaker 2Shout out to the the y'all are the real MVPs. Y'all yeah, y'all have to y'all be up in a brother and slip out.
SpeakerYeah, we love to see, like we said, we leave before the last song. You know, we try to leave while listening to the song, but we do appreciate the set list. So go find your set list. Like I said, the special guests may be different, but it's pretty much the same.
Speaker 2Yeah, pretty sure everywhere she went, it was a thing. I think it's really cool to know, like some people want to be surprised. So if you want to be surprised, I get that too. We're not those people. We want to know. We look at tickets sometimes and we look at their set list before we may buy their tickets because even though we may like an artist, if they're not performing and singing song that we want to hear, then we may not go. Um, like we saw Mary J twice. And the first time she was she was amazing both times. But the second time she didn't think some are a hit song, and people were upset. She didn't think real love the second time. But we we wanted to see her because we enjoyed her the first time, but we also wanted to see Mario and Neo.
SpeakerSo yeah, so highly recommend if that's how you pick your concerts, maybe look at their set list beforehand. Concert tickets are expensive, yes. So make sure you look at that. And if you do want to go with a theme, you know the themes are all over TikTok. I think like the school girl theme, Cardi B didn't even set that up. It was the fans. So I mean, social media is your best friend with concerts sometime. Now, the only thing we don't spoil ourselves is I really don't like to look at other people's TikToks on the concert because I do like to see it for myself. I know there's always people posting TikTok con like clips of the concerts and things like that.
Speaker 2We got we got some video, but I need a new phone. My camera stuck right now. I dropped it so it's even worse. So but I'm waiting until July because I'm with the new newer pole, so I don't want to get the one that's out now. I want to wait till July. But if I asked you, what was your favorite song of the night, Neerum? What's what do you feel like was your favorite song of the night?
SpeakerSo I love Be Careful that she sings. I can even see the music reading on my head of her in that wedding dress. Like that is probably my favorite song that she sang that night. And then Ring came on like right after. So those two are my top two of the night. Other than, you know, Meg and the Stallion coming.
Speaker 2Mine would be Mine will be Dead. I love Dead. I was singing a song when I wasn't really singing the song. I was like loud with everybody else out. Dead was really good. And I love outside. For whatever reason, I love outside.
SpeakerOh, yeah, that's like I love outside. I mean, her lyrics are great. I mean, not to like hate on other rappers. My dad likes to call them mumble rappers, but Cardi B, like her lyrics are clear, they're direct, she's got good flow. She's just an overall great, what do they call it? Lyric? Lyricist. Lyricist. I mean, she's amazing. So let me tell you, she was singing those. She was rapping. Sorry, not singing, she was rapping those lyrics.
Speaker 2I turned to Alec and I just said. I don't know how any man leaves her. She is gorgeous and she is funny. And I'm a Cardi B stand. So I'm the wrong part. I think she is just absolutely perfect. She's hilarious.
SpeakerYeah, he loves Cardi B. I mean, I love her too, girl. You're a baddie girl. You know exactly who you are.
Speaker 2So yeah, she was she was amazing. I would 10 out of 10, I would do it again and again and again. If we wouldn't go into so many concert, I might have told Alex L Drive and go visit Austin and go back concert the next night.
SpeakerSo I highly recommend if you are a big Cardi B fan, big hip-hop fan, she is worth seeing.
Speaker 2Yeah, the Toyota Killer was sold out. If I asked you too, what was the best moment for you from the whole concert?
SpeakerHonestly, I hate to sound cliche, but when Meg the Stallion came out, that would be my way. I love the girl. I mean, I follow her whole life. I I'm waiting for her to get married. I mean, I love Meg the Stallion and her man, Clay Thompson, that's that right. I was hoping she came from Dallas to come see us, and I'm so glad she did. I I'm obsessed with her as well. So that was probably my favorite moment, a lot of people's favorite moment, probably.
Speaker 2It's just because she's from the eights. We love each other. That's why when Beyonce comes here, we show up and show out. We love our people, and so Meg is our people in Third Ward. Like, you know, my mom's from Third Ward. Like, I grew up in Fifth Ward, we screenproud people, and Meg came out, and Meg was her. She was Meg.
SpeakerSo she's everything. She's a baddie too, guys. We love her. And I think also another favorite moment, honestly, at the beginning of the show, like I said, Pretty B really came out like heavy hitting. And I think from the beginning, like she showed us what type of concert that it was gonna be, and it was amazing.
Speaker 2It's me. Hello.
SpeakerPerfect way to come out.
Speaker 2I mean, the whole thing was because all her acts were just right. Every song was perfect in that particular act. She did six acts, like we said, and it every act was it was perfect when she went back to her Dominican roots that she had. Like it was, it was just really, really good.
SpeakerAnd then another thing that I liked that she did was she did give a little during her chain her costume changes, she did let the dancers perform as well. So they got to do like a circle dance and perform and showcase their skills, which I always think is great that an artist lets their dancers do that because they're just as important as an artist. They really helped make the show. So and her dancers were great. I mean, they danced their butts off. They're they're good.
Speaker 2Yeah, when I were billing and I she Cardi was dancing. She had a chair dance that she did.
SpeakerShe won the twerk challenge of the night.
Speaker 2Yes, Cardi was her. She was her. Would again do it again and again. She was amazing in concerts.
SpeakerSo yes, she really was. So usually before concerts, we do like to go out and eat at a restaurant. Sometimes it's chain restaurants, sometimes we try new restaurants, but it's always something.
Speaker 2Always a restaurant. We we go to the woodlands for some concerts, and when we go to the woodlands, we usually go to a different restaurant every time. Because they have a lot of good, different restaurants that we don't necessarily have. The woodlands at Houston, but it's a suburb of Houston. We usually go and try to eat somewhere different every time we go there.
SpeakerYeah, and they have really good places. This time though, we weren't able to go eat anywhere because I was sick. I had a really bad stomach bug. So the only thing that was able to sustain me was soup. So that's what we we had. We had soup.
Speaker 2Yeah, I think too, we have a lot of different, there's a lot of different types of soups. That's what I'm trying to say. And yeah. Um a lot of times when we when we go out to eat, I eat soup with my meal anyway. I love soup. I don't get salad like other people do. We went to the Chris Brown concert. We wanted to go get something to eat. We were we actually were late because of my baby's sister, her aunt. So she made us late.
SpeakerYeah, we don't want to go to another concert with her.
Speaker 2She made us late to the concert. So even at the stadium is expensive. You know, whether you're at NRG in Houston, whether you're at the Woodlands, whether you're at the Toyota Center or Dakon Park now. That stadium actually is the second biggest and Houston. We it holds like 40,000 people, and then Toyota Center where the Rockets play. And then we go to the Woodlands, it's outdoorsy. We don't really eat there. To me, the food is okay, but we rather go to a restaurant, and especially in the Woodlands, we try something different every time. But because this time Alex didn't really eat, and we I was concerned if she's gonna make it. I think the adrenaline from the Cardi B concert kept her going because she was up on the piece, she was dancing. But as soon as we left, it's like she just got really, really bad. That's why she said, Oh, she has a soup. So that leaves me to question, what's your favorite soup?
SpeakerSo after eating soup for a week, kind of still eating soup, I realized that my favorite soup is potato soup. I love potato soup. Give me potato soup with some cheese, bacon, some little green onions, the chives, and I could eat that all day, every day.
Speaker 2You know, my favorite is I love a lot of different soups. I love Tuscana, it's my favorite. I would say that's the CEO of my soups, but I love chicken noodle soup. You can't, a good chicken noodle soup is amazing. I love a potato soup. I love lobster biscuits. I don't know if you would consider gumbo a soup. I don't know, but I love gumbo.
SpeakerI'm not a gumbo fan. But speaking of soups, we like to do this little fun segment. One of our favorite shows that we like to watch together is Chop. My dad, the chef, he's a baker of the family. I mean, he can throw down and cook. And so Chop is a show that we like to watch. And essentially the theme of the show is these contestants are given a basket full of ingredients, random ingredients, and they have to create a dish. And they, of course, do appetizers, desserts, main dish. But for now, the challenge that I have set for our chef of the family is to make a soup using four ingredients. So the four ingredients that I did pick out include carrots, ground beef, garlic, and tortilla chips. So, what kind of soup would you make with that? And please tell us how you would make the soup. It'd be a little indirect. We did cheat a bit on this challenge.
Speaker 2Yeah, I'm not I'm not good enough to be on there and do that. So I thought Alex she had to give me the idea before.
SpeakerSo I did give him ingredients beforehand.
Speaker 2Yeah, because I can't just come up with a if I was on top the whole time, my whole time we'll be trying to figure out what I've done cook with those and those bassets. So we're doing a theme, a soup theme recipe. I did, you know, she said carrot, she said garlic, she has ground beef, and the other one was tortilla chips. So what we just what I decided to do was to make a ground beady tortilla stick, usually in the carrot, the ground beef, the garlic, and a tortilla chip. But you also, you mentioned garlic before, you cut your onion by having an onion, you chop it up, you get you some beef broth. You can either buy beef broth or you can make it yourself. You got a can of diced tomatoes.
SpeakerAnd just a tip, guys, you can't add ingredients. You just have to make sure you use the four ingredients in the basket that there's no harm in adding anything.
Speaker 2You just have to make them the star of the basket. That's what they always tell you. That's how you lose. So then, you know, tablespoon, you use some chili powder, you lose some cumin, salt, and pepper to taste. And, you know, Alex knows my rule is I can't tell you exactly how much to use. I just say teasing until your ancestors tell you to stop.
SpeakerI can't cook because I can't season until my ancestors tell me to stop.
Speaker 2You'd be seasoned to the ancestors say that's enough chai. That's what that's what you know you've done enough. So then you use if you want to, then you use the the the tortilla tips. You can have cheese, you can have avocados, cilatro. I don't eat any of that lime or sour cream to add into it, but you you want to ground, you want to, and always I use butter. I put the butter and I miss the garlic. I put the butter in there and I cook the garlic a little bit till you can smell it. Then I add the ground beef and I season it until they have step size. Then you add your vegetables, your carrots, and your onions, you cook those while you're cooking the beef. A lot of people wait until after I cook mine because I like mine to be as soft as it possibly can be. And then you pour your beef broth and your diced tomato and you stir in your chili powder, your cumin. You bring that to a ball, and you let it, once it boils, you reduce the heat and simmer it for 15 to 20 minutes. Then you add your tortilla chips, like maybe one to two cups. You let that simmer for five more minutes until they get thick. And then you can serve it and you can top it with all the extra tortilla chips and any of the other toppings that we talked about, the cheese and all that, like that. And if you want to make it a little bit spicier, you can always add jalapenos to it as well.
SpeakerSo hopefully maybe next time when we'll be able to make that for dinner and we will be able to give it a true rating from the dish now. I could tell you that would be a five out of five for me. And knowing how my dad actually cooks, it probably will be a five out of five. So maybe next time we will see how good the recipe actually turns out.
Speaker 2Yeah, we should try it and then we'll maybe take pictures and see that and we'll let you know.
SpeakerAnd let you guys know. So, shout out to dad for creating that awesome dish. Perfect recipe for the calm summers. I mean, it's essentially a deconstructed taco, if you think about it, in a soup form. And I mean, who doesn't love tacos? So I definitely would try that recipe out. Hopefully, he makes it soon for us, guys.
Speaker 2Who doesn't love tacos?
SpeakerCrazy people.
Speaker 2Yeah, how do you not like tacos? Tacos, they deserve love. Well they have taco too, Steve.
SpeakerThey do. Tacos are really the best. So, starting our debate off with a simple question to end our soup debate is chili a soup?
Speaker 2I don't believe that chili is a soup. I feel like chili is more of a spoon because it's thicker. I don't know what you think about that. I think that soup is more, um, it has more liquid in it than chili does.
SpeakerI agree. I can agree. I think soup is brothy. I think soup is something you can dip your crackers in and let them melt in the soup and then eat the sawy crackers. And you can't really do that with chili. Also, you can eat chili with a fork, and you can't eat soup with a fork.
Speaker 2So dipping your crackers in your soup is so underrated that isn't amazing flavor. Yeah, the rice soup.
SpeakerVery much so. Okay, so going to the Cardi B concert actually had me thinking about a question. So my question to you is would Cardi B's personality and stage presence have made her a star in the 90s or early 2000s?
Speaker 2I think so. There were actually a lot of female rappers of the 90s. People act like it just started recently, but the 90s had some heavy hitters the way Cardi B rapp. You had the brat, you had Missy Elliott, left eye from TLC, the Lady of Rays, Mia X from No Limit. That's why I always tell people I was, can I get military discounts because I was in the No Limit Army. MC Light, Queen Latifa, which a lot of people don't know that she was a rapper nowadays. They just see her as this movie star, but was a heavy hitter. She could really, she had a she has a nice flow. She goes listen to Living Legend with her and Bun B and Jada. They saw they still got it. Yo-yo, we had Salt and Pepper and Eve and and Trina. And they each had their own style. But I think Salt and Pepper were probably actually the first deal rappers to openly talk about the desires and push it to topics that were kind of tapped with the time. They did push it in 87. People which understood it's the only people wanted to arrest them.
SpeakerWhich is so crazy because songs nowadays, I mean, openly talk about sexuality and very controversial topics.
Speaker 2I agree with you. They didn't follow up with Let's Talk about Sex, which is also controversial. So some radio shows wouldn't even play it. They felt it was provocative when they were talking about face sex.
SpeakerWell, and you also had other heavy hitter songs like None of Your Business in 1993, which was basically about a woman's right to own her own sexuality, and people criticized it for being too taboo, but it actually ended up winning Grammy for best rapper performance.
Speaker 2That it did, and you can't forget about Shoot that did in 93. I love that song. I know it was more playful, but it was still bow. It basically ended them openly appreciating someone they were attracted to.
SpeakerWhich is not something you really heard during the 90s in rap songs or something that women openly did.
Speaker 2I agree. I think that Solder Pepper really did lay the foundation for artists that came after them.
SpeakerLike Little Kim and Foxy Brown, right?
Speaker 2Yeah, and and even Trina, you you think about it. Little Kim came out in '95. She first made her initial uh react um album on Junior Mafia, the conspiracy album, and she took those bangs to a whole nother level. We had never heard a woman rap like her.
SpeakerVery explicit. She was very explicit, which I mean, if you think about it, Cardi B, I mean, her music is very explicit as well, which there is nothing wrong with that. I mean, we are fans, obviously, but it is something to think about. So back to the question, I mean, do you think she would have been more famous in the 90s or in the early 2000s?
Speaker 2I think if she would have come out at the very beginning of the 90s, it would have been tough for her. Even Son and Pepper were getting pushback and the lyrics were, I'll say pretty mild compared to what Cardi B does and what she says.
SpeakerYeah. So I don't really think maybe the time would have been ready for Cardi B's lyrics.
Speaker 2I don't think so. I think by the late 90s, I think you see the little Kim. She influenced Foxy Brown, she influenced Trina. They changed the game and the culture shifted a bit. So I I think that they were able, because people say stuff about the some of the things that these women say, some of the songs that Cardi that little Kim and Trina and Foxy were singing.
SpeakerSo by then, I mean Cardi B probably would have fit more with them in the 2000s.
Speaker 2I think so. I think the two thousand early two thousand would have been perfect for her. That's what I think.
SpeakerThe early two thousands. Also, I feel like in the early two thousands there was more, I guess internet started coming around more. So you got to see more reality shows. I mean, you got to see MTV, E. T. more music videos. I mean, not that music videos were a big thing, because I remember seeing, I mean, I wasn't born in the 80s, but seeing Michael Jackson videos and how great those videos were. I mean, it was like waiting to watch a new movie release. It was. But I do feel like Cardi B had more maybe of a personality for the early 2000s with much more reality TV because she did get her start off on a reality TV show. Love and hip hop, New York. So I think you're right, you know, maybe 2000s would have been best for her.
Speaker 2I agree. I think because you had artists like Eve, people don't realize how how lyrical Eve was. Missy Elliott, I saw her a year or two ago when she toured. She was amazing and Trina, they were established. It was getting bigger on radio. The audience was more used to bold female rappers by their community. So I think you take Cardi Timber, her confidence, and her storytelling, and she probably would have blown up during that time.
SpeakerOh sure. So a couple quick questions, fun questions that kind of go with our little debate that we've got going on, our little topic, discussion, I should say. Do you think she would have survived a rap battle in the 2000s? Now, 2000s, I mean you had Eminem, you had Jay-Z, you had what can I think of his name? Oh my gosh, I'm going blank.
Speaker 2I think maybe Lulu was out at that time. Yeah, I think so. There's a lot of heavy ears. Hip hop was at it was at, I think, an all-time high. You had they riding on the coattails of people like uh Pac, who I think it debated her forever. You have Biggie, who was one of the greatest storytellers ever. Oz was amazing, we could tell a good story, and you have some older people, like you know, people don't give run DMC and people like Curtis will enough credit for the things that they did for the thing, for the communities and for rap. So I think that he would have been really, you know, like I don't think you have people who are necessarily she can she'd not gonna go out there and pre-style like Eminem will do to you or something like that. But yeah, I think Cardi D makes good music. She doesn't make music, I think, at the pace of some of those other guys did back in the day, like you know, Pop was pushing out album after album after album. Diggy was kind of filling his pushing it out, but then he came out with the double CD like after death, and I think she would have been successful and in in that era.
SpeakerFor sure. And I mean, Cardi B is known for doing a lot of collaborations with different people. I mean, DJ Khaled, Selena Gomez. She has also done some music with Bruno Mars. Bruno Mars. I mean, Maroon Fad, she's done so many collabs, but which brings me to my question: who do you think she would have done a collab with in the 90s? I mean, which artist?
Speaker 2I think she would have done one with Look him.
SpeakerThat would have been such a good song.
Speaker 2Yeah. I think she would have done one with Trina. He would have done well, like, you know, with Luda, that would have been a good song. Could think about the song Trina did with Luda, that she would have had some good opportunity to do a lot of collabs with a lot of people. People forget that Lil Wayne, she's older, but Lil Wayne was really young rapping early. So casually, I would love to see her do a song with Mia X, Mia X from the Limited Mia X. It's so underrated for how great she was. So I can see even do a song with somebody like Meyer and like doing an IBI Water Braindy coming in and doing a rap of her indie.
SpeakerSo that would have been so good. She can still collab with some of these artists, Cardi. So you never know. And then for my final quest, which is gonna lead us into our fun little segment of song ranking. If Bodak Yellow, which is one of Cardi B's top number one hits, was released in the 90s, could it become the number one song of that era? And I mean, you have some number one songs. You have What a Man by Salton Pepper, you have Dear Mama, Tupac, you have Big Papa by Biggie expressions. I mean, could her song have made it amongst those?
Speaker 2I think Cardi is very talented. People forget how competitive that time was. Lauren Hill was Lauren Hill is still living out this album that's an amazing album, and she can still tour just based on that one album and her Pooji stuff. It was a great time to be alive, but I remember hearing somebody saying, like, you couldn't drop the ball. I think it was maybe No U did there. You had Luda, you had Jay, you had authors that they were out at the same time, M. And so like you had to come with your best every time that you were doing a collab, putting the album out. I mean, it just goes to show. Like, we're looking at right now, like the old guys are coming back, Juby, they have an album coming up. People are waiting for that. T. I just dropped a song that he got everybody over here dancing. I mean, if it just it was a good time of your life, but if you were a music fan, especially if you were a hip-hop music fan, we got to see so many great artists come in. And I've always liked live concerts, but as I've taken Alex to more concerts, we go to more than I probably have in my whole life than I used to. So I just really enjoy live music. And there's some people who I wish I would have been able to see just to say that I saw. Like I saw the Jackson 5, and I can say I saw Michael Jackson. Like a lot of people can't say that. But I wish I would have seen Frank. I didn't. I wish I would have saw Whitney Houston. But back to the question, I think she couldn't have, but I think she would have had, like, you know, you gotta couldn't have done work because there were some there are some good number one songs.
SpeakerI mean, songs that we still listen to this day. That leads us into her fun little segment. We love to play this game where we do a blind ranking. So essentially, our blind ranking is telling each other songs or having something generate, movies, TV shows, whatever, and we blindly rank them without knowing what's gonna come next. So we decided to do that with Cardi B songs. So we did use spin the wheel. We're gonna spin the wheel and see what songs we get and blindly rank them.
Speaker 2I'm so nervous right now. Your rankings are Harley Ubber the way you want to be. So this is gonna be interesting.
SpeakerVery interesting. So let's start. So our first song is Jung roll.
Speaker 2I'm nervous. I'm so nervous right now.
SpeakerOur first song is up.
Speaker 2When it left, then it's up to baby. Two out by regret there. Can I love both those?
SpeakerThat'll be my number three. I'm going to. Our next song is Day. I like that song. I'm gonna go two.
Speaker 2I'm gonna go three. I love that song.
SpeakerThat's the one with Kalani. Yeah, I really do like that song. Our third song is Girls Like You. Girls Like You with Maroon Five. That's gonna be my fourth one. I love that song, but I am saving my number one spot.
Speaker 2I'm gonna y'all for what that two. That's a good song. Maroon Five. We saw them in concert before.
SpeakerThey were good. They did not bring Cardi B out on stage, but that's okay.
Speaker 2That's a whole story that we have to tell it another time about that whole trip.
SpeakerYes. Our fourth song is Is Ring. Now that's my number one. Five.
Speaker 2I rolled it out.
SpeakerOkay, so I want to make that one, but I have number five left and you have one. So for our final song for my five and his one.
Speaker 2Regret this. Don't let me regret this.
SpeakerIt's dead.
Speaker 2Yes, I wrote dead. Dead is like my second, third favorite card to be song. I love dead. Now you can bowl with it. So are you happy with your ranking? I am very happy with that. It said I'm tweaking, but you ain't tweaking enough.
SpeakerI'm glad I got my first song pick. So I love Marine. I love Kalani. I mean, I want to see Kalani in concert. She's my next artist, I want to see. But we would like to thank you for joining us today on our Dad Please podcast. First one. Our first episode. We have a lot more adventures in store for you coming up, actually. Houston Rodeo, Cowboy Food.
Speaker 2Give Pride Oreos.
SpeakerYeah, so we are very excited. So please join us for that. And just thank you guys so much.
Speaker 2Wait, wait, wait. One more thing, one more thing, one more thing. Here we go. I have that joke. Dead joke, dead joke. So why did the vampire attack Cardi B? I don't know. Because she had bloody shoes.
SpeakerDad, please.
