Hello and welcome to The Dad Please, the podcast where our dad and daughter talk about the things we love and the things we definitely don't always agree on. From concerts and city adventures to books, movies, and our favorite foods, each episode is full of stories, laughter, and a little generational debate.
SPEAKER_01I'm Hamlin, the Dad, and I'm Alex, the daughter. Together we're exploring our favorite places, understanding what we're reading and watching, trying new foods, and of course, telling more dad jokes than anyone actually asked for. So grab a snack, get comfortable, and enjoying the conversation.
SPEAKER_02Welcome to Dad Please. It's me, Alex.
SPEAKER_01And it's me, Dad.
SPEAKER_02And today we are gonna talk about a very controversial topic in the Bachelorette world. So let's talk about Taylor Frankie Paul.
SPEAKER_00Who?
SPEAKER_02So Taylor Frankie Paul was a TikTok star who got her start on The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives.
SPEAKER_01Explains a lot. I had never seen that show.
SPEAKER_02I am a big reality TV girl, and so The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives, a couple of the members were on Dancing with the Stars, but Taylor Frankie Paul was set to be the first Bachelorette who has never appeared on The Bachelorette. So the Bachelorette franchise usually only puts people who have been on the show before. So you've had to be a past contestant to be the next bachelor or bachelorette. So essentially her season got canceled because an old video resurfaced from 2023 of her abusing her ex-partner. So that caused major backlash and they canceled her season.
SPEAKER_00I did see that.
SPEAKER_02Yes. So there's a lot of controversial going around about that. If her show should have got canceled, why the video was released. But if you do want to check out more, head to TikTok, Instagram, people news, anywhere you get your reality drama from or your pop culture drama. Let's go on to something a little more chaotic, our actual lives. So this weekend, I actually went to the Cherry Blossom Festival that was held at the Pearland Town Center. Now, this festival was held from March 21st to March 22nd.
SPEAKER_01Didn't I tell you about that one? Was that one of the ones I told you about?
SPEAKER_02I think so. He usually sends me little Houston trends that are going on on Instagram or TikTok. I actually went with my mom and brother. The festival essentially was a Japanese festival. They had anime there, they had collectible pins, backpacks, t-shirt, cups, anything that you can get your hands on. So a big tent that I got stuck in was the pin tent. Now I'm a big pin collector.
SPEAKER_01Don't get me scarted on that. We go to Disney and my God, we spend so many times at the pin shops. Everyone we see, she wants to stop at.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I've actually gotten a pin book. I just love to collect pins. So I did take a couple pictures that you'll probably be able to see later on. But another cool gift that I did get, I actually got for my dad. So it was an avatar light box.
SPEAKER_01That'll be interesting because she didn't even know. We kind of talk about things that we're gonna discuss, but we don't talk about everything because we wanted to be fresh. So she got me that not knowing that I'm gonna have a topic later too.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and it is Avatar the Last Airbender. That's the what I got him.
SPEAKER_01Not the blue people.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, not the blue people. It actually was Aang with Apa in the background. So there was also another light box that was Avatar the Last Airbender, but it was of Zuko. And when I talked to the seller, he did say he just sold the whole set because I was trying to get my dad one of his favorite characters.
SPEAKER_01Did you happen to get his information?
SPEAKER_02I did not. I did not follow him on Instagram. I might have gotten his business card, so I'll have to look.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, try to send business to people's way, especially people who do a good job. The light box is amazing. He did an amazing job. And so when people do well, you want to try to help them to build up their business if you can.
SPEAKER_02Yes, very true. And one of the big things that was at the festival was food. So you love food. Yes, we do. You'll see later on, essentially, this is a food episode.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's what we are.
SPEAKER_02We are foodies.
SPEAKER_01Like when we go to Disney, we just eat.
SPEAKER_02We do, we do. But it was a food full of Japanese street food, noodles, boba, tea. There was actually also some Latin food there. But one of the things that I got at the festival was garlic noodles. My brother had shrimp fried rice, chicken skewers, and then my mom had some shrimp and then some egg noodles. I actually also got lemonade from this lemonade stand where they sold different types of flavors. There was strawberry, blueberry, cherry, and there was peach tea.
SPEAKER_01I love strawberry lemonade. I can make a strawberry lemonade. I created me a recipe from a strawberry lemonade, so he did, and it's one of my favorite drinks.
SPEAKER_02But there was dancers, there was live music, and then there was also sumo wrestlers.
SPEAKER_01Were there real sumo wrestlers or just somebody acting like sumo wrestlers?
SPEAKER_02They were actually sumo wrestlers. They taught you the moves of how to do sumo wrestling, and then they actually asked for volunteers.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely not. They will not be sumo and me.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there were some pretty big men, so I definitely wouldn't try it, but you know, there are some brave souls out there. And then after we did that, we just walked around and there was actually a dessert table there that was pretty good. She sold cake pops, mini cakes, cookies, muffins. And I actually did get her Instagram. She is Sweet Cherry Texas. Her desserts were amazing. So highly recommend following her on Instagram and getting a dessert from her. But that was my very fun-filled, exciting week. So what did you do, Dad?
SPEAKER_01Well, we're gonna talk about it a little bit later. This is um an episode when we're gonna talk about food a lot. You're gonna see that we do like good food. Um, this week I was reading a book that I've been reading for a couple of weeks now, and it's called The Dawn of Yancha by F. C. Lee Gee. It's the third book of the Chronicles of the Avatar series. I mean, because why wouldn't you want to watch Avatar and read Avatar? I mean, what's better than bending elements from your couch, you know? And so as a dad of girls, I absolutely love Kyoshi. Her don't take any crap attitude. She's basically the ultimate role model and sometimes reminds me too much of Alex.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I am quite a bossy, bossy girl.
SPEAKER_01So I flew through the first two Kiyoshi books because honestly, like I said, she's my favorite character. I'm in the Avatar universe. Donna Bianca is a little bit slower for me, a slower pace. So Alex has convinced me to get audible.
SPEAKER_02So I am an audible girly now. I love to read, but listening to a book, I especially like to listen to my memoirs on there, and it's really great. It's like listening or watching a TV show.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I got Audible and I started listening to the Donna Biancha on there. It's like having your personal storyteller, like Alex said, it's really good. And so, you know, for I know some people who may not know what Avatar is, and we've talked about that. Kiyoshi is one of the most powerful avatars. She lived the longest. She's a force of nature. She's terrifying, firing, and like 100% dad of girls approved. Then Adonna Beancha, she's still in within a book, The Rise of Political Intrigue, Battle and Wisdom. It's a floor praise, but it still brings the heat. I bought Roku's books too, the last two of a series right now. I haven't read them yet because I'm still reading Adonna Doncha's two books of um Yoncha, and it gives kind of the pre-ang backstory and showing how the balance of the elements got a little out of whack.
SPEAKER_02Let me ask you this really quick. Do you have a certain character that you would want to read a book about? I know you talked about Kyoshi. You talked about Roku. So what book would you want the author to write a more in-depth character analysis of?
SPEAKER_01I would like to see one of Iroh and the Byronord with their dad and you know, because Iroh is super powerful and Alex knows. He's my favorite, one of my favorite characters, probably right behind Kiyoshi. And I love Aang. Let me let me put that out there. I love Aang. I love that Aang's 12-year-old and he's he's a bad boy, like to do the things that he did. But I love Uncle Ayroh because he's so wise and so powerful. And life has made him to be a different person because you hear the stories, he was a dragon of the west, which he was super powerful, but he was so calm in the way he loved Zuko and the way he took care of Zuko.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and Zuko is my favorite character. I absolutely love Zuko. I love his redemption art. He's my all-time favorite character from Avatar The Last Airbender.
SPEAKER_01Alex is kind of like the fire family. She loves um Azula because she likes the bad girls.
SPEAKER_02I do. I'm a villain girl, guys. I really do love the villains in almost everything.
SPEAKER_01So, exact perfect example. What's your favorite Harry Potter character?
SPEAKER_02Bellatrix. I absolutely love Bellatrix. I love a villain who gets a great death or a great ending. And Bellatrix received a great ending. Azula did as well. She went crazy, but you did get to see that progression of her going crazy. So I did like that as well.
SPEAKER_01People who created Avatars, they did a very good job of growing those children up. Ain grew up. Saka grew up. He became very wise. Katara ended up being the most powerful waterbender that we'd ever seen. She was very powerful.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was I think it is easier to do it when it's in cartoon form too, to see the kids grow and to have storylines like that, just because kids age so fast when it's live action. So it's very difficult to maybe try to fit all of that in, which there is actually a live action TV show now. There was a live action movie, but now the TV show, they're doing it by book.
SPEAKER_01Which is what I agree with Alec. I said they need to hurry up and put those out because children grow up and from 12 to 13 they look totally different. They do, and they look more mature. And so like it's funny because I came to the Avatar team late. I watched the movie first. And everybody who seen the show, the original movie, everybody who seen the show, they were they were like, that movie sucked, and I don't know how you could watch it. And I was like, it was a pretty good movie, and it made me watch the cartoon. And then I watched the cartoon and I said, Ah, I see why everybody's upset.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, cartoon is really good, which leads me to ask you, what is your favorite book?
SPEAKER_01Every book gives you something different, right?
SPEAKER_02Yes, and then they're split into elements. So book one's water, book two's earth, book three's fire.
SPEAKER_01Based on how he's gonna train and what element he's training in. So book one, he's trying to find a water bender to teach him. Book two, he's trying to find an earth bender to teach him, and book three, he's trying to find a firebender to teach him, which is funny because every book is not who you think will be the one who would end up teaching him.
SPEAKER_02Except maybe the first one. I kind of feel like Katara you knew once they got to be friends, she was kind of gonna be the one to teach him.
SPEAKER_01But she didn't know, we didn't know how powerful she was gonna be until later. So I probably would say, like, I love book one, probably the most because they had a lot of Roku stories in there. I love Roku. I love the one when they went to his island, and it shows you got the first glimpse of how powerful an Avatar could be when the Roku did what he did to that island.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I would have to say my favorite is book three, just like because I said I love a good Zuko redemption arc, but we could go on and on about Avatar. We'll probably actually have to do an episode about Avatar the Last Airbender. We're gonna move into what we are listening to this week. So the album that we picked actually was an album from an artist who performed at the rodeo. We went to the Houston rodeo recently, so the artist that we picked was Shaboozy.
SPEAKER_00Shabozy.
SPEAKER_02He actually performed at the rodeo. So the vinyl album that I have of his is Where I've Been Isn't Where I'm Going. And a couple songs on here. He has Horses and Hellcats, a bar song, Let It Burn, My Fault. But probably one of my favorite songs on here is Let It Burn.
SPEAKER_01I like the Tipsy song. That's one of the songs I know is very catchy tune. When he says someone pour me up a double shot of whiskey, they know me and Jack Daniels got a history. So I mean, me and Jack Daniels have no history. I don't drink at all, so I'm very boring.
SPEAKER_02We got a history, and you know, it's pretty good. But that's what we've been listening to. So we've been listening to that because we actually went to the rodeo. So if you are from Texas or maybe you're not from Texas, maybe you've heard, but the Houston rodeo is one of the biggest events that happens during the month of March.
SPEAKER_00Yes.
SPEAKER_02It runs for about three weeks, and there's so many events. Does take place at the Energy Stadium. There is livestock, live music, there's concerts.
SPEAKER_01A lot of food, and everything is pretty much deep fried.
SPEAKER_02Yes. You know, Texas. Texas loves fried food and barbecue. So there's events that occur. So some events that occur before the rodeo or even during the rodeo, they have the 5K. They have a lot of running events. So 5K, half marathon, full marathon. There's a parade. We actually attempted one year to run the 5K. It did not work out for us.
SPEAKER_01It did not work out.
SPEAKER_02But we did get a free shirt.
SPEAKER_01We wasted her money.
SPEAKER_02I didn't pay for nothing. If you think about it, girl math, I got a tree shirt out of it. And it's a really nice t-shirt. But those are some of the events. And then another big thing that is exciting, what happens with the rodeo, is the concert lineup. So that is an experience itself. I believe the concert lineup drops like two weeks before the rodeo.
SPEAKER_01Maybe a little bit. People are waiting because we're in Texas. You can go to the San Antonio rodeo. Not always the same people. Like I know the San Antonio rodeo, I believe they had Ludacris this year. I really consider going.
SPEAKER_02And then the Austin Rodeo also has a performers.
SPEAKER_01And there's different people. The Houston Rodeo, I think, is probably the bigger one, the biggest one. I'm not just saying that because from I'm from the H, I think it's the biggest one and best one, but they all have different people. Rascal Flatts was here this year. Alex tried to get me Kelly Clarkson tickets. I wanted to see her so bad. They said she did a great job.
SPEAKER_02But the process of getting the tickets is literally insane.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The rodeo needs to clean that up. A lot of bots in there buying tickets. I mean, as soon as you see it, they're already selling the tickets and they're tripling the price. It's actually a very favorable with the cost per se when you buy the tickets directly from the rodeo. The tickets are not that expensive.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so keep in mind if you are an out-of-towner or you've never been to the Houston Rodeo, the concert tickets are about a good$50,$60 at the bottom. And if they get reselled and they're like$150, I can tell you it's not worth it. As much as I love Houston Rodeo, the energy stadium is set up for the rodeo and not as much as a concert. So be mindful when you do buy your ticket and try not to pay$200 for a concert ticket.
SPEAKER_01That you're only gonna probably get an hour for. You're not gonna get their full thing, it's about an hour.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and the concerts are shortened. So you can get a ticket for the person you want to see.$50,$60 is a good price. The Houston rodeo is something that us Houstonians enjoy very much. It's a family-filled event full of food, laughter, and I highly recommend too. If you are not used to those cowboy boots, do not wear them because you will be walking a lot. I average a good 10,000 steps at the rodeo. So unless you don't want blisters on your feet or your feet to fall off, I would recommend wearing comfortable shoes.
SPEAKER_01I have pumas. That's what I have some pumas that I wear, and they're very comfortable anywhere I walk. Like when we went to Vegas, I wore them. When we went to Disney, I wore them. They're very comfortable. They're cushion-y, but she's right. I didn't even work out that day because I walked so much. It wasn't even about working out and stuff.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, it's a very fun, filled event. We try to go at least once every year. It's a yearly tradition that we try to uphold. We try to see some concerts, but of course that's not always the case. He did see a concert that we will definitely be getting into, but I didn't go see a rodeo concert.
SPEAKER_01The concert that we went to see was Parker McCullum. And we'll we'll talk about that. Alexa, we'll talk about that later. But it was a really good concert. And again, if you're making new.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's the experience. And I mean, the rodeo, it is split up into different parts. So there's an indoor section and then there's an outdoor section. So essentially the indoor section is filled with the shopping area where you can buy a bunch of western jewelry, you can buy western clothes, hats, boots. There's also an area in there for livestock. So you get to see the chickens, you get to see the horses, the cows. Sometimes you might even see an animal give birth. I know when I was there, I saw a horse give birth. You can see the little baby chicken's hatch.
SPEAKER_01We actually missed that. A bull, I think, an or um a cow gave birth, and they said it was right maybe 20 minutes before we came in.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they have a lot of animals that you can see there. There's also a petting zoo for the kids that they can go to.
SPEAKER_01My mom went with my sister, with my baby sister and her kid, and at the petting zoo, she had food in her hand, and she was like, Okay, I'm done pet I'm done feeding these animals and just do it all because they kept coming to her. But she didn't feed any animals, she just didn't move them over.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you don't want to have animals surrounding you. I don't recommend the petting zoo at all. Also indoors, they have a couple food items there. I know they have like they had dipping dots.
SPEAKER_01Y'all know I love dipping dots. I got me some dipping dots.
SPEAKER_02His favorite place. I know when I went with my mom, we got Mexican street corn. One of the best things I like, and I just like it because my brother, he's an artist, and they have an art gallery where they pick some of the best pictures of the kids in the surrounding Houston area and they hang it up. So outside of the rodeo, after you move from the inside and do all those festivities inside, the carnivals outside, and there's also more petting zoos. I do know outside as well, they have kind of like sections where you can listen to live music from different people. The food, we will definitely be diving into the food, but there's a whole bunch of food. There's carnival games.
SPEAKER_01So I tell people all the time, like them carnival games ain't set up for you to win.
SPEAKER_02They're set up for you to spend your money.
SPEAKER_01Spend your money.
SPEAKER_02And then also too for the General Admission. So the General Admission ticket is about$25, and that does let you go into the rodeo. It does not let you go to the concert, and it does not let you play the carnival games. You do have to purchase carnival tickets and purchase your game tickets to play, but it lets you onto the grounds and it lets you eat the food, which obviously you have to pay for the food.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, pay for the food. Be prepared to pay a little bit of cheddar. You're gonna be giving up a little bit of money. Stuff isn't cheap there. Food is good, but I mean, again, it's the experience. And I was funny because I was thinking when we went this time, I was like, I've never seen anybody ever know at the rodeo. I know a lot of people come. And then right when I'm thinking it, I run into one of my really, really good friends' nephew.
SPEAKER_02Mom actually ran into one of her coaches. His son does FFA, so he was there. And that's another thing. The rodeo gives a lot of opportunity to the FFA society.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we had one person after, I forget which exactly which prize it was, but they interviewed him afterwards and they were like, You're getting used to being up here. He had participated five times in this particular event, and he's won it three.
SPEAKER_02It's really cool, which dad will be getting a little more into because he actually got to see the rodeo. The rodeo has its own schedule, but usually the rodeo happens right before the concert takes place.
SPEAKER_01For me, it's not just about the music. I love the music, but I love the rodeo experience of the rodeo is amazing. And again, I'm from Houston. I've gone to a lot of rodeos, and I just love the atmosphere of the rodeo and you know the excitement of the rodeo. So, you know, we got there in time to see the rodeo. It was the wildcard round, so they were they were hungry for those events that they were doing. So it was really, really good. And it takes a certain skill level. People like, oh, I can do that. No, you ain't just going out there riding a bull.
SPEAKER_02Uh yes, ask my sister, actually. She thought she could ride a bull. I have to find that video and post that. With her permission, of course. She definitely could not ride that bull. Lasted a good one second.
SPEAKER_01She was like, Yep, nope.
SPEAKER_02She put her hand in the air and she went tumbling down. It was the funniest thing. But I do remember, I believe they still have it. One of my favorite rodeo events was the Mudden Busters. The little kids. So essentially the little kids ride a sheet and try to hang on for as long as they can. Kind of like a mini like a mini, like bull riding. Like a mini bull riding. It is the cutest thing ever.
SPEAKER_01That is like the last thing they do before the actual concert.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that's probably one of my favorite, favorite events. I always said when I have kids, I am putting them in that.
SPEAKER_01I know I'm I hate that we missed that. I think though my sister could put my nephew in it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, our little cousin, he would have been so great doing it. I wish he would have done it. I wish my aunt would have put him in it. Okay, Dad. So since you actually got to see the livestock rodeo, what other events occurred?
SPEAKER_01Well, so bull riding, which is my favorite. I watch a lot of old cowboy shows because of my grandmother. Bull riding makes me think of my grandmother because we watched a lot of some old cowboy shows. One of our favorite cowboy shows was The Rifle Man. She got me hooked on that. And they also had bareback riding. They had bell racing. They had teen roping where you had to catch one at the front, one through the rope at the front, the other one through it at the back leg, trying to catch that, that bucking broncos. They even had cart racing where you got to pick who you thought was gonna win. So you got to see a lot of that. And of course, the cutest, most chaotic event of the night is Rutging Bustin. Little kids holding on sheep, like their life depending on it. It's just pure entertainment. So it was just really, really a great show. Those people were working really, real hard. It was actually three brothers who I think they competed in different things, and they all were in the rodeo, and it's just like, watch those guys, and they show you highlights because they try to get people ticket money to fly. And so they show you highlights of people really eating it, and the way they win is by whoever cheers the loudest for the person. And so it was one where the bull just stepped on them, and it was crazy. I don't know why anybody wants to do it, but I'm here for the entertainment. I love it, so I'm here for it.
SPEAKER_02That sounds fun, and most of the time, this is people's careers, at least one of the times they get to make money, so it's pretty exciting. I always love to see the rodeo too when I would see a concert. But tell us a little bit about who you saw. I know you mentioned it earlier, but we went to see Parker McCullum.
SPEAKER_01And man, when I tell you he showed out, he's from Texas. He's from Conroe. He represented Conroe. Um, the crowd was sold out. This is like I think he said his fourth rodeo doing, and he sold out like pretty much everyone. You know, like we talked about last time. We're gonna show off our hours. And you know, Conroe's, you know, hop and a jump down the street, came out, he brought his wife and his son on stage. His wife is pregnant again. It was just a full on proud Texas moment. And I was in the stands trying to recover from everything that I had been eating all night. So he played a lot of good songs. He played Burn It Down, which is a really, really good song. And so it was a really, really good concert. I remember like you said, it's only an hour.
SPEAKER_02Seeing that show, what would you give it as a rating? I know it was shorter, so we can't really fully rate the concert, but a quick little rating that you would give him.
SPEAKER_01I probably would give him like would you want to see him in a full concert? I would want to see him in a full concert. Based on the little things that I saw, I probably would give it a cold play. Four stars. I think that even if I saw him live and A full concert, I don't think they're standards, right? Because RB rapping concerts, they're jet yeah, and this is country. His voice was amazing, even at even at that stadium, because it's not always good for the rodeo, like you said.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the acoustics and the sound isn't set up for the concerts. Now, if you go to a concert at the energy stadium, of course, it is set up differently for a concert. Now, the energy stadium during the rodeo is set up for the rodeo. So the acoustics aren't that great. I mean, the stage is straight in the middle for everyone to see.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and you it just spins, and it was funny because when it's wiped out the stage, he said, good love getting up to spin a stage, is what he told his wife.
SPEAKER_02A very different vibe than going to a regular concert, but I am gonna have to listen to some of his music. I actually don't really know any of his songs.
SPEAKER_01I was like, I don't know who this is. And then I so Alex and I have this thing that we do. When we go to concerts, we listen to that artist the entire ride there. So I listen to Parkham a couple of months. I was like, oh, I do know some of his songs.
SPEAKER_02I just didn't know who I live a couple of his songs if I hear them, but I really don't know any off at the top of my head.
SPEAKER_01He was really good. Um he made me, Alex, to tell you I'll go to a concert and then I'll listen to that music like forever and when I come back and she's like, You should have listened to it before. It's my little thing I do. That's what I did at Coldplay, and I enjoy Coplay so much. And I listened to Coldplay for like two months straight. That's all I'll listen to.
SPEAKER_02Instead of listening to it before. But that was the Houston Rodeo grounds. That was the concerts, that was a livestock show. Now let's get into one of our favorite things. I would like to say it's both of our favorite things.
SPEAKER_01It's the real star of the rodeo. It's the food. It's the food. It's the food.
SPEAKER_02So how the rodeo is set up, the food portion, which you kind of explained a little bit, but essentially it is under tents. So you have three to four big tents, and each tent has seating areas and then has its own little restaurants inside. Not restaurants, but booths, I guess you can say.
SPEAKER_01And you have some booths set up outside.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and then you have booths set up outside, and then you have a couple food options, like I said, within the NRG state. Well, not it's not in the NRG stadium, it's in one of its little sections. I don't know what you would call that building, but it's not in the NRG's actual stadium. And then, of course, one of the biggest things I wanted to see was Trollburger. I wanted to try, but Trowburger is very hidden. I don't know if you went to go searching.
SPEAKER_01I did not see Troil Burger, we did not.
SPEAKER_02But Trowburger, my mom and I were hunting that place down, and it is located at the back of the NRG stadium and by an entrance. It's like hidden in the corner. It's its own little pavilion. I mean, its own seating area, its own music, its own food booth. So it was very hidden. So it is by one of the entrances and it's behind the NRG stadium. And I I loved it. It was a really good burger. Now, people usually like to hype stuff up on TikTok or Instagram. So I always like to, I do like to follow those hypes. So I didn't She does.
SPEAKER_01That's how we pick a lot of board. We're gonna go. Yeah, it's on TikTok.
SPEAKER_02I'm a TikTok queen, so I did want to try it. And it was really, really good. So it's basically a smash burger, essentially. And they sold Trill Smash Burger. Yes. And Trill Burgers is, of course, from Bun B, who's a Houston star, I guess you can say.
SPEAKER_01Okay, funny, funny story. Side note. So we were at Chipotle. She knows what story I'm gonna tell. We went to Chipotle in Pearl Land. And we were there one day, and I was like telling Alexander, this was a few years back, I was like, oh my God, I think that's Bun B. He was like two people, two or three people ahead of us. And I was like, I think that's Bun B. And she's like, who? I was like, oh my god, I have failed you as a father. How do you not know who Bun B is? He's from UGK, one of the greatest rap groups ever. And so she was like, she's like, okay. And so I go up and I said, Hey, are you Bun B? He was like, I am. I said, Okay, I just needed to know, make sure you wasn't like a doppelganger or anything. And I just went back to my doing my cook. I don't want to attack the man while you're trying to get a stipole order for him to wipe.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was a my bad, but we did get to meet Bun B in person, which was I guess pretty cool to say now.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, now that she's had the Trill Burger.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and Dad actually had a trail burger as well, not at the rodeo, but he did taste the trillion.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I hadn't had them because you have to go certain places to give them, but they actually built one close to our house. And anybody who really knows me, I have a shirt from What's Whataburger is like the greatest fast food hamburger place in Texas. You know, argue with your mama, I don't care. But I have a shirt that's the number one with cheese. That's all I want is meat and cheese and mayonnaise.
SPEAKER_02That's all he likes. He likes no sauces, no ketchup, no mustard. He doesn't even really like pickles on his milk.
SPEAKER_01I don't want anything on there. So we got the trill burger and we got it with the onion and the trill sauce. And let me tell you, as a person who does not like sauce, as a person who doesn't really want onions, I like onions, but I don't really want that on my burger. Yeah, it was the truth. It is not hype. It is not hype. It is everything that they say it is.
SPEAKER_02Appropriately hyped. Yes. It's a really good burger. But they also have special lemonades.
SPEAKER_01Uh I got a strawberry lemonade. It was really good. It's like real strawberries, and that was really good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the lemonade was good. And they did have the seasoned fries. The seasoned fries were pretty good. Now I am not too sure if the menu differs at different locations.
SPEAKER_01I think it is different at different locations because we were looking because you talked about you hyped up that lemonade, and I wanted to try some, but they didn't have that flavor that you were.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, they at the so at the rodeo they gave a burger, a vegan burger, and they were selling chicken there. And then they had three different types, oh no, two different types of lemonade, which was the strawberry lemonade, the regular lemonade, oh, and the desert pear lemonade that they were selling there. But it was really good. So the trill burger is essentially just a smash burger with the trill sauce, caramelized onions, and cheese.
SPEAKER_01I have a friend who's a vegan and he tried the vegan burger there, and he says, I think they're lying. I need it to be investigated. He said, That burger's so good, it tastes like it's real meat. He said, That's how good the vegan burger is. So they don't have a lot, a lot of items on the menu, but I mean when you do something well, you don't need a lot of things to to do it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and there's not too many locations, but I would recommend looking up a location near you and trying it out because it's really good.
SPEAKER_01So if you ever come to Houston, it's kind of like you go, you come to Houston, you hear people say they want Frenchies. You go to Frenchie's ticket and you go to Trailburger. Those are good places. And if you're not from somewhere in Texas, go get your water burger. I'm telling you, you will not regret it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, some of those are really good food options. Another food option that we both actually had at the rodeo was the bacon from Russo's Fat Bacon. So I did try the cotton candy bacon. Like I said, I saw it on TikTok, but it was so good. It's hot, it's fresh, the sweet and savory taste was amazing. I know dad said he tried like three different other bacons. My mom did get the candied bacon, and that one was pretty good as well.
SPEAKER_01Russo's was probably the best thing that I ate there. The bacon was good. The cotton candy bacon was amazing. We bought, I think, one or two, and then we ended up going back and buying more, and we ended up bringing some home. And the crazy part is we brought it home and heated it up, and it was still good.
SPEAKER_02I recommend, even if you're not a bacon fan, try it. I mean, if you don't eat meat, then obviously don't try it, but it was really good.
SPEAKER_01I had a lot of good things there, but that was by far was the best thing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it was really good. And they were also selling other options that I didn't try, but I think you did try that. They had the beignets.
SPEAKER_01I didn't eat the beignets, but they had a bacon jam bread pudding. It was amazing. Like that was it was really good.
SPEAKER_02I didn't get that. So kind of describe a little bit what that dish was.
SPEAKER_01It was like it's bread pudding with bacon jam in it. It was so sweet. They had a lot of different things. They got the cotton candy bacon, two other ones that were really good. I thought the cotton came on the.
SPEAKER_02Oh, we also got the candied bacon. Yes, that one was really my mom got that one, but there was a third option. I can't remember what it was.
SPEAKER_01Can't either. It was a really good though.
SPEAKER_02There was the beignets there, but I did not want to try that or the bread pudding because another TikTok that I saw was cheesecake on a stick. So that was from Drizzles, and I actually got the it was trending. It's a Biscoff cheesecake on a stick. Now, what I tell you, that was delicious. If you are a cheesecake fan, if you love the Biscoff cookies, I highly recommend that cheesecake was everything. That was my favorite thing at the rodeo. I love a good cheesecake. My mom actually got the Snickers one, and she liked that one as well. That one was pretty good, but the Biscoff cheesecake was everything. They said it was on TikTok.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they had even at Russo's like Alec, they had a pickle lemonade too, and I'm thinking about that. Yeah, they didn't. But I didn't want that one, but they had a pickle lemonade.
SPEAKER_02They also had pickled pizza there as well.
SPEAKER_01Yes, they had that in. So, like, it's just a kind of like you try everything. And when we were eating a bacon on stick, people were like, where did you get that from?
SPEAKER_02People were asking us, people kept asking us too.
SPEAKER_01We hit up holiday farms. It's a place in Texas. Alex just actually tasted some of the fudge that we got. They have banana pudding, cookies and cream, English coffee, strawberry cheesecake, cheesecake praline, rocky road, and bacon fudge. Alex did not care for the cheese goods.
SPEAKER_02I did not like the bacon fudge. I was not a fan of it. My favorite one was probably the cheesecake praline or the cookies and cream. And that's because I do not like Oreos, and I thought that fudge was great.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the bacon is not something that can feed a lot of.
SPEAKER_02It actually tastes like bacon.
SPEAKER_01Bacon with chocolate, which is like, but if the bacon isn't overpowering, but it's just it's not something that I would eat in one sitting or you know, but like it'll take me a little bit to eat that.
SPEAKER_02But he's a really big fudge fan in general. Bucky's, I believe Bucky's is only a Texas thing, but at Bucky's they have fudge there and he gets that every single time. It's like a buy two, get three free or something. I don't know, but he loves fudge.
SPEAKER_01If you're in Texas and you go on a road trip and you do not stop at a Bucky, are you really road tripping? No, you're not. Let me uh let me answer for you. You're not road tripping if you don't stop at Bucky's. I go to Bucky's and every time I go, I take a picture and I send it to my aunt just so she knows that I went to Bucky's and she didn't.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Bucky's is a big Texas road trip thing, but I highly recommend if you do come to Texas, another cool spot to go to is Bucky's. They sell barbecue, they sell food.
SPEAKER_00They shell a barbecue, what's to say else?
SPEAKER_02Fresh brisket on the board. That is my dream to say as well, guys. In a Bucky's. And also, I would like to say, shout out to Bucky's, they have some of the cleanest restrooms.
SPEAKER_00Cleanest slice.
SPEAKER_02So if you want to stop on your road trip, go to Bucky's.
SPEAKER_01They have a person in there just to clean the bathroom. That's all cop is is just make sure the bathroom is clean. It is an amazing, amazing place, and I can go there every time. The only thing like they used to have dip and dots at Bucky's and they took it away. I need to write them about that because I would give me dip and dots and fudge every time I would go.
SPEAKER_02He is obsessed with dip and dot. But I, like I said earlier, I would like to say bringing it back to the rodeo, the biscoff cheesecake was my favorite food. And I guess dad's would be the the bacon.
SPEAKER_01All three bacons. I liked all the bacon that they had. You see how she did that? She's very slick about that. She's like, Dad, get back on task. That's what that I have to do. That's what she was doing.
SPEAKER_02I have to keep them on track, or we could talk about buckies for a whole episode. But it's now one of actually my favorite portions. We get to do our little chop segment, and I have some fresh ingredients for dad. Actually, I try to base the ingredients kind of off of the rodeo barbecue Texas style. And just a quick reminder for what we do for our little chop segment is essentially, if you've seen the show Chopped, is we give four mystery ingredients, and dad has to create a dish out of it. Now, we do cheat a bit, like we said before. I do give it.
SPEAKER_01You're not cheating, you're not trying. That's what my dad used to tell me.
SPEAKER_02I did give dad the ingredients beforehand because he cannot just make up something on the spot.
SPEAKER_01Okay, so let me let me preface this by saying, I think those people on Chopped are amazing. It would take me 45 minutes an hour to try to figure out what to cook with that. I would lose and I would never make anything. I think that is an impressive skill that I do not possess. I can cook, but I can't think like that. I was watching Chop today. I could not do it. So I'm very impressed with that. So I told her, like, you know, because if we ever go somewhere and somebody's like, oh, I know you you could do the chop. No, I can't. As she tells me early, just so you know.
SPEAKER_02Yes, I do give him the ingredients beforehand. So his ingredients this time, rodeo-based theme, are mac and cheese, barbecue sauce, jalapenos, and brisket.
SPEAKER_01So I had this perfect, I was like, oh, I could make this meal up right now. Like, I was like, that was an easy one to make. So I was talking to her about it. And I was like, oh, I can do this, I can make some macaroni and cheese, and I can do, you know, cut, chop, chop the brisket up and you know, blah, blah, blah, and do all this stuff. She's like, You really need to make like, you should make a nachos out of it. So she has all these ideas that she's not gonna come up with, and I'm not gonna do it. I just don't execute them. I just great ideas. She figures them out. So I changed my, I made, I actually could have made that one on like in immediately. I already had an idea about that one. So what I came up with is I called them hold on, let them cook nachos. And so I make it as a barbecue brisket, mac and cheese nachos.
SPEAKER_02So that's actually exciting to me because I was I really wanted him to make nachos. I love nachos.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so she made me change it when she said that. So I was like, okay, let me get in the lab and try to figure out how I can throw some nachos in there.
SPEAKER_02A very spoiled girl here.
SPEAKER_01Even though we just had a soup that we use nachos, she keeps rolling these tortilla chips and all this stuff for that. This has this nachos.
SPEAKER_02My favorite type of food is Mexican food, guys.
SPEAKER_01So we did the macaroni and cheese. I will make macaroni and cheese, and I'll make it probably.
SPEAKER_02Side note, his mac and cheese is the best mac and cheese in the world. And I'm not just saying that because he's my dad. I mean, maybe I am, but I love mac and cheese, and he makes some of the best mac and cheese in the world.
SPEAKER_01So, yeah, we wouldn't, we're not getting it out the box, but we will make it for homemade. I'm not the best brisket maker. I'm not like a bit, I'm not a big barbecue person. I have a gas grill, and that's not really barbecue into me. So, and then we use the barbecue sauce and we use jalapenos, you slice the jalapenos up, and you have the tortilla chips. And you could have optional like shredded cheese, sour cream, and green onions if you want to put it on there. But you heat the brisket. You know, if you have the brisket, you heat it up and you cook it until it's caramelized. Then you have the macaroni and cheese and you layer the nachos, you put the tortilla chips on the baking sheet, put the macaroni and cheese over it. You add the barbecue brisket because you want to mix the brisket with the barbecue sauce. You sprinkle some of the jalapenos on there, and then you put cheese if you want it. Extra cheese. Cheese is like butter. It just makes everything better.
SPEAKER_02You never have too much cheese.
SPEAKER_01Never too much. And you bake it in the oven from at 375 for eight to ten minutes until it's hot and melty, and then you can drizzle a little bit barbecue more barbecue sauce over it, and you can add your extras like sour cream or green onions. It's like, you know, crunchy chips with creamy macaroni and smoky brisket and spicy jalapenos. It's messy, loaded, and that is gonna be fire. So we're gonna try that and make that. And I think it may be better than the other one.
SPEAKER_02Yes, the crunch soup was the soup was really good. So that's very exciting. So hopefully we will get that up soon for you guys. But we can talk about food all day, every day. But I would like to dive in to our rodeo question. What is the main event at the Houston rodeo? Is it the rodeo competition or is it the concert? Because depending on who you ask, you will get two very different answers.
SPEAKER_01So I'll say it depends. I think the rodeo is the biggest thing because it is the Houston rodeo and livestock show. But if you get somebody a big artist there like a Beyonce or like Cody Johnson, there's no rodeo for Cody Johnson. Cody Johnson is doing a full concert.
SPEAKER_02It's the closer of the rodeo.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so if you get you tell me you bring Beyonce to the rodeo, Beyonce is gonna be the show. When they brought George Strait, George Strait is the A-side. I don't care what you put in me as the A-side of anything that he's in.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and they there have been some heavy hitters since the beginning. I mean, Selena performed at the rodeo, Darius Rucker, Rebus, Garth Brooks, Ariana Grande. There have been a lot of heavy hitters that have performed there. And usually before they kind of go, I want to say a little bit bigger. Some are already big. Like Selena was her. She was already a big star. But I do know, like with Ariana Grande, when she performed, she has gone progressively a lot bigger as the years have gone on. So that happens. A couple rodeos that we've seen Chain Smokers, Demi Lovato.
SPEAKER_01I know we saw Demi Lovato, she was really good.
SPEAKER_02We're actually gonna see her again. We get to see her as a full-time full concert of her. But they have many different artists, and one thing that that I do like about the rodeo concerts are the dates that they have. So they have dates set up for first responders. Yes, they have Tejano Day, they have Like Heritage Day, they have where a family night where families can get in for free.
SPEAKER_00They'll have a Krypton Thinger thing.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so they have a lot of different artists that come, it's not just country. Lizzo came to perform Fepe Aguilar.
SPEAKER_01So a lot of Um, yeah, um JV Balvin Balvin with their.
SPEAKER_02So there's a lot of different artists that show up for the rodeo.
SPEAKER_01They said Lizzo put on a show. I've heard nothing but good things. They said she brought out Pow Wow and Slimp Doug. I mean, if you're from the H, you know, she was represented because she's from there. She went to A. Leaf. She actually went to school with one of my little cousins. She Lizzo came and she brought the fire. Like I told y'all, we believe in supporting our people. And so she would they said she put on a show. They said she was really good.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and usually, which this is the first year in a while that the Bun B hasn't done the rodeo for Black Heritage Day. He usually takes over the rodeo, brings a lot of artists on stage too. But this was the first year in a while that he hasn't done it.
SPEAKER_01Laney Wilson was here. They said Lainey Wilson sold out. They said she was really good. We've seen Tim McGraw a few times. A la car when she was a baby. Yeah. And he's the he's he puts on a really good show. And I mean he's freaking Tim McGraw. So it does, you know, it's always good. And then we had Megan Moroni. We had Creed here. Sometimes Luke Bryan was here. You have you have people from old times.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, Journey was here last year for the rodeo.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Journey, they shut it down because the lights went off. It's a journey concert.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so there's a lot of cool artists that you can see. And the rodeo, like we said, goes for three weeks. So it's three weeks of artists coming.
SPEAKER_01People that you may not normally see, and like we said, the ticket prices, if you can catch them, are not bad. As people who go to a lot of concerts, let me tell you, they're not cheap. The concerts are not cheap. And so you pay a little bit of money. I paid to go to some concert, it was like$200. I was like, oh, this is the good price. Nobody said that's expensive. I said, ugh, that's not expensive.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, the most expensive concert I ever paid for was Beyonce, and I have no regrets.
SPEAKER_01The most expensive one that I probably played for with everything included would be Coplay, because hotel room and flights and all that stuff. But like just ticket-wise for me would be Bruno Mars. We spent I spent the grip on the Bruno Mars ticket. So, you know, but we love music. So to me, It's worth our money. Yeah, I remember I read this post somewhere where this lady says that you'll regret not buying a ticket. She said, just buy the tickets. So you know what? We just buy the tickets.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we love live music. I will basically see anyone in concert even if I don't know them. I just love music.
SPEAKER_01That would be me, because there's some people I don't know. And then I go and I'm like, oh, they're pretty good. And then when I hear the sound, they're like, oh, Alex, listen to that because whenever we're riding in a car, she's a DJ, so she just makes me listen to whatever she wants to listen to.
SPEAKER_02Yes, and I listen to all types of different music. I know people like to say that a lot, but I would like to say I listen to a variety of people, and we go from concerts from Bruno Mars to Bad Bunny to Beyonce. So a lot of different artists. So we like to see a bunch of different people. We like to go outside of our normal music genre. So, like I said, we'll basically listen to anybody, and we've been able to have a great opportunity to see a lot of people at the rodeo. I think as important as the concerts are and how as much fun as they are, I do think that the rodeo is a pretty great opportunity for a lot of people. The Houston Rodeo raises a lot of money to give scholarships to kids. Yes, it does. It gives job opportunities to people because you have to think a lot of times it's these people's jobs to do the bull riding, to do the barrel racing. This is their actual career. So it's really nice that the Houston Rodeo has provided that opportunity. Like I said earlier, they give scholarships for art. My brother's a big artist, they give scholarships for the FFA Society.
SPEAKER_00Faye is huge.
SPEAKER_02Yes. So it's very nice to see how they it impacted the community.
SPEAKER_01I do love that about the rodeo that they're all about helping the kid and about trying to give them scholarships and do things like that, especially with things that they love.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and also too, the rodeo has a lot of help. So you can volunteer and be a rodeo volunteer, which is nice.
SPEAKER_01And you can get in the concert for free. You may can't sit down if it's sold out, but you can get in for I mean it's not free because you volunteer your time. You volunteer your time. Time is more valuable to me than money.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, and so it's very nice that you're also able to do that if you want to volunteer. If you live in Houston, it's a big process to get on, but you do get a lot of perks for volunteering. So a quick couple questions that we like to throw in. Do you stay for the full rodeo show before the concert or do you just show up for the artists?
SPEAKER_01No, we we stay for the entire thing and watch it.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so I usually like to stay for the entire thing too. Now I will say, I hate to say this, but I if I go to multiple concerts to the rodeo, I sometimes will show up to just the concert. I'll see the rodeo like once.
SPEAKER_01So I'm a big rodeo person. I love it. Like I am from Houston, I bleed Houston, and so I enjoy the rodeo a lot. I mean, I'm not country, I'm from the city, but you know, I love, I love, I love, love, love the rodeo.
SPEAKER_02Yes, which it's a very exciting, fun event that occurs every March. So we're always waiting for it to come.
SPEAKER_01Waiting for them to drop the who's coming out.
SPEAKER_02Yes, the concert lineup, and so that's always exciting. But that leads me to also ask what was your favorite part of the rodeo of the whole thing. The food, the carnivals, the livestock show, the games.
SPEAKER_01To me, it was the opportunity to spend time with family and making memories. The top is gonna be food. I'm gonna I love the food was good. That's part of the reason why you go to the road.
SPEAKER_02I was gonna say he's so sentimental. I love it, but I'm gonna say food.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the food was really good. And I mean, I love everything about the rodeo. Like it only happens once a year. Three weeks is only once a year, and we're already ready. Like I think they're already already starting a process to see who's gonna come next year. So we're already ready to see who comes next year and get our hopes up high again to go to another concert. And you know, again, it's not the best for sound-wise, but it's still the experience, is is everything.
SPEAKER_02And those three weeks go by really fast, and such a big event that occurs.
SPEAKER_01And the traffic is horrible.
SPEAKER_02It's very bad. And you know, I would just be careful and be aware of parking situations, be aware of your time managements while you when you go to the rodeo, or if you're driving to work and you work in the med center, be very aware of your time.
SPEAKER_01And I will tell you too there's a A lot of different ways to park.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. And another fun thing too that I wanted to talk about is dressing up for the rodeo. Do you dress up? Do we dress up? I do not dress up. Like I said earlier, I wear comfortable shoes.
SPEAKER_01I don't dress up to anything. I put on some jeans. I didn't because it was kind of warm. So I wore some jeans shorts. But most of the time, because I do work from home, I barely even put on shoes. So I was like, so that the fact that I had on tennis shoes, it's saying a lot. But I put on a Dolly Parton shirt because you know Dolly Parton is country music. And so I I wore that. So I didn't get dressed up because you walk a lot. I see people, there were some people in there, they were dressed, and they uh I'm I'm not that person.
SPEAKER_02Full Western wear. It's very cute, I will say, but you can, that is a good place to dress up, have a date night, take pictures, but we are not dressy up people. No. So that was our little rodeo. We like to talk about, I guess, you know, it's our blind ranking segment.
SPEAKER_01Love the blind ranking segment, but makes me nervous at the same time.
SPEAKER_02We are going to rank our fun rodeo moments. Like we said before, we don't know what's coming up next. So we just spin the wheel and go from there. So let's get into it. So these are gonna be rodeo moments. So our first item is the rodeo lineup release.
SPEAKER_01The anticipation of the rodeo lineup is like we're already anticipating next year. But I even with that being said, like that is not the most fun part to me. So I'm gonna go five with that one.
SPEAKER_02I will also put that as five. I do feel like dad said the anticipation is always fun to see who's gonna be there, but number five for sure. So next is shopping the rodeo merchandise.
SPEAKER_01So that's fun to me. I don't really like to spend money. I'm not gonna really buy things. So for me, just you know, experiencing I'll say a four.
SPEAKER_02I'm gonna say a four too. I love shopping, but I am very cheap and I refuse to pay the rodeo prices for some of those boots and hats. And I do know boots cost a lot of money, guys, but I just I feel like they upcharge at the rodeo, so I will give that a four.
SPEAKER_01She is definitely very cheap. She is not exaggerating.
SPEAKER_02This is funny, guys. Our next one is the running events. That's gonna be my three. I wish I could have said that was five.
SPEAKER_01Three, definitely three. I do want to do that. Um, I want to do a 5k just one time, just to say that I did it. You know, we both ran track. Love to run, but I was a sprinter, so that that would have been number five for me, but number three right now.
SPEAKER_02The next one is eating your favorite meal. That's gonna be my one.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna go one because it's about the food.
SPEAKER_02Yes, we love the food. I feel like that's the best part at the rodeo. So our final one, which will be both of our twos, is watching the livestock show.
SPEAKER_01Oh, that I'm good with that one. I'm good with that one. The only thing I would have wanted to switch was three and five. Other than that, I'm very happy with my one and two because I do love the livestock show and rodeo. So there's, you know, there's that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I would have definitely switched those uh two as well. Running would definitely have been number five for sure. But we would like to thank you guys for listening to our rodeo segments. We do have an exciting podcast coming up soon. We are going to see new edition.
SPEAKER_01If it is in love, that's all you get. That's all I got.
SPEAKER_02So we will discuss that at our next on our next podcast show. We will be going to that concert. It'll be my dad, me, and his sister, my aunt. So that should be a fun time.
SPEAKER_01See Tony Braxton. I love Tony Braxton. I just said I wanted to see her. So then they announced it. I've seen Boys and Man a million times. I love Boys and Man. They put on a great show and they sound amazing.
SPEAKER_02I am learning the Tony Braxton dance, so I could do it at the concert. But thank you guys and see you next time.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I got something for you. How do you stop a bull from charging?
SPEAKER_02I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Just like you do your daughter, take away her credit card.
SPEAKER_02That was not funny. Dad, please.
