From concerts and city adventures to books, movies, and our favorite foods, each episode is full of stories, laughter, and a little generational debate.
SPEAKER_00I'm Hamlin, the dad.
SPEAKER_01And I'm Alex, the daughter.
SPEAKER_00Together we're exploring our favorite places, sharing what we're reading and watching, trying new foods, and of course, telling more dad jokes than anyone actually asks for. So grab a snack, get comfortable, and join the conversation.
SPEAKER_01Welcome to Dad Please. Welcome to Dad Please. It's me, Alex.
SPEAKER_00And it's me, Dad.
SPEAKER_01And we are going to be discussing streaming services this week because there are so many things that are hot this summer that is streaming all over TV. Now, Dad has every streaming service known to mankind. He has Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney Plus, Max and Discovery, Paramount, Hulu, Apple TV, Peacock. Well, Dad has all of them and he pays for all of them.
SPEAKER_00And we just got AMC.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_00We just got AMC. I just got that they gave me a good deal. Like the Godfather said they made me an offer I couldn't refuse.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so dad has all of those streaming services, which I am so glad because there have been some really good shows streaming.
SPEAKER_00The only one I don't pay for is um there's two I don't pay for, but I'm not gonna say that because right now they currently let you share. But two of them my um Keisha pays for.
SPEAKER_01Yes, which I am happy because right now on Peacock, we have Love Island going on USA, which I absolutely love.
SPEAKER_00Love she even made her mom get addicted to the show.
SPEAKER_01Yes, so you know, these streaming services are totally worth getting. You know, Amazon Prime is playing the World Cup. It's also playing on Peacock as well, and then HBO has House of Dragon playing. So for all of you Game of Thrones fans, and then they have all the DC stuff on HBO Max 2.
SPEAKER_00They have the new Superman cartoon that's out. They have um I've been on a little Young Justice kit, but Young Justice is really, really well written. I can understand why people were upset when it went out. I'm currently on the first season, but they have um though, they have the Superman, they have Batman. There's a lot of good stuff on HBO. Um they I think I can't remember if Harry Potter comes back. That's the thing about the screaming services of the will, they switch so many different things. Yeah, they're always switching.
SPEAKER_01I will say, I think Harry Potter is now on Pow.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it's hard to keep up, but we don't know because we have all of them.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we have all of them, so we have a lot of options. I mean, Max also has, you know, Gossip Girl. It has One Tree Hill, it has Vampire Diaries, so it has those shows too. And then of course, you know, Paramount has mostly a lot of shows. Yeah, Avatar the Last Airbender. They have like the Nickelodeon section for like Spongebob. They have the Avatar the Last Airbender, they also have Criminal Minds on there, which Alex loves.
SPEAKER_00She watched it over and over again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm obsessed. And then, you know, Hulu and Disney are now together. So Disney.
SPEAKER_00You can combine your Hulu um thing with your Disney, which is I think it's pretty cool. I'm a little sad that Hulu is going away because um Hulu, I like the way that it's set up and I like the Disney, but I mean, hopefully, I don't know how much they're gonna go up on the price of stuff and HBO Max and Paramount are supposed to be combined, so I don't know how much that's gonna go up. Isn't HBO Max is still it's already high pay yearly, but it's still, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's still pretty high. And you know, Hulu and Disney Plus have Love Island UK, so there's that. They have that one there, and then Netflix.
SPEAKER_00She watches that everywhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I watch it everywhere. And Netflix has also been hidden. They have their new show, I Will Find You, which is so good. You know, Netflix does a really good job with their limited series. I will give them that. Netflix and Apple TV have some really good shows.
SPEAKER_00Netflix also has the um um is it Percy Jackson is on Netflix right now?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Percy.
SPEAKER_00I have to watch that. I haven't watched it. That's all season one of the week. Oh no, Percy Jackson's on Disney. Oh, Percy. Oh, we just watched the thing about um they did a review for Penny and Tipper did.
SPEAKER_01Percy Jackson is on Disney Plus.
SPEAKER_00You're right, Avatar's on Netflix.
SPEAKER_01Avatar's on Netflix, and I will say, shout out to also Apple TV. They have a lot of good shows on there, but they don't advertise them as much, I will say. It's like they're very hidden. But Apple TV has some really good shows that are streaming on there. It's just you gotta look. They also have some really good movies, too.
SPEAKER_00So they have the apparently uh my sister keeps it on to get me to watch, but apparently Ted Lastbo is uh is really, really good. That's one of their shows on Apple TV. Um they got I think they have a new one, it's called Anappa Original Margoles, Got Money Trouble. They have a Snoopy show on there, uh Peanuts on a show on there as well. So um, like Alex said, they have a lot of good things. They don't advertise as much, but they do have a lot of good things on there. They had that um Jason Momo show that used to be on there too. It's still on there and it was really Jason Momoa show. It's really good. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So they do have underrated TV shows on there, so there are a lot of different fun varieties on all of these streaming services. Now I know it's very difficult to pay for them all. I'm so lucky that Dad pays for the streaming services. My mom does get streaming services too, but the thing with being on my mom's streaming services, she will watch a show that she really likes and purchase that streaming service. So right now, she's all about Deadon Ranch, which is on Paramount, the Yellowstone series. So once she's done with her show, she will get rid of that streaming service, no matter if you're in the middle of your show or not.
SPEAKER_00You never know what you want to heat watch. So for me, uh I have like all of them, like you know, like even when I've never watched The Walking Dead, but that's on the AMC Plus app. Um the The Garfather of Harlem is a show that I really, really want to watch. Um, I think that's I can't remember. Oh no, you know, no, no, no. Godfather of Harlem is on MGM. We have MGM Plus too. Yeah, we have MGM Plus. So yeah, so Godfather of Harlem, which is a show I really want to watch, is on MGM Plus. And um, I like MGM when you first turn it on. Um, they have the lion roaring, like you know, old school. So it's it's really cool. But I I want to see, I've seen bits and pieces of the Godfather of Harlem and it looks really, really good. And then SciFi show called Um From Onair and Um Um Billy the Kid in the Institute is a show that I really want to watch on MGM Plus. So that's on my list of things to watch on there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so to try to make it a little easier on what you guys think you should pour your money into, it's very hard because you know, I like almost it's so nice to have every streaming service at your hand, at your fingertip. But dad and I will give it our top five and why we think that maybe you should put your money into getting these streaming services. So I am definitely going to now, of course, there are so many streaming streaming services out there, like dad says. So for my number five, I will put Amazon Prime video on there because I like the fact that Amazon Prime has a live channel where you can watch different shows or movies like live, and then you can also um like it's like 24-7 channels sometimes, so they'll have like all day charm playing or all day long order playing, and then also Amazon Prime does have some really good shows and movies.
SPEAKER_00They have Reacher, which is amazing. I like the Reacher series, but I haven't watched the whole thing, but uh they have that on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they have a really good, they have the Expanse series on Amazon, which I like, and so that would most definitely be on my list.
SPEAKER_00No, I'm thinking about Amazon, they made me pay extra money to get no commercials because I do not like commercials, so I pay extra leading the no commercials. We definitely don't believe in commercials. Yes, because uh um side story real quick. Uh when Alex was in college, she was with a friend and she was watching Hulu. I didn't really watch Hulu, I just got it because so we could have it. So when they were watching it, the commercials were on. And so Alex Brand was like, oh my goodness, you have poor people Hulu. I said, What? What? I went immediately and ticked the commercials up. Like, no, we don't, we're like getting poor people Hulu. So, yeah, so I don't like to do commercials. Like, I I'd just rather just watch a show straight through. I was watching an episode of um, I think on Hulu and it kept getting commercials. I was like, Oh, I could have watched the whole other show with all these commercials. So just a little story. Every time I think about poor Hulu, I think about Alex Loprian.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so we definitely don't do commercials. But my fourth one would definitely be um HBO. I really like HBO because it one has most of the superhero shows on it. And then also they have like older shows, so like The Sopranos is on there, they have Vampire Diaries, they have Gossip Girl, they have ER. I know ER is on another streaming service now, but I would put HBO Max and they have really good movies on HBO Max too. A lot of old movies too, like they have Clue on there, Clueless on there, so they have a lot of older movies as well, like 90s movies that I love. Um, so for my number three.
SPEAKER_00Oh, let me interrupt you again. So I'm looking at the list. We also have stars. You didn't put stars on here, but we have stars, which has good movies as well.
SPEAKER_01Um, so for my number three, I would definitely uh say that it would probably be Apple TV. And I think because Apple TV has a lot of underrated shows, and they have a lot of shows that they actually turned into shows based off of books. So like Silos on there. Um, they also have Severant, I believe that's what it was called. That was on there that was really good. So I do think that they have really good shows that are underrated, and so that would definitely be my number three. Um, and then my number two would be probably Disney Plus, because I absolutely love Phineas and Ferb. That's like what I'm obsessed with, and I love being able to watch like the old Disney shows, and I love being able to Yeah, so I would say that they have good movies, and so since Disney and Hulu are combined now, that will count as one. Now, this is really hard because I really like Paramount of all the shows, but I absolutely love Peacock a lot, and so Peacock would probably be my number one because not just because they have Love Island on there, but also because they have Love Island, all of the um what is he called? The like Chicago Fire. They have Law and Order SVU, and that's like my top show. So they do have like all of his Chicago PD, Chicago Fire, Chicago Met. They have charmed on Peacock, so Peacock would probably be my number one. But Paramount Plus, I guess technically could be interchangeable with my Apple TV. I could go back and forth. I would say like Paramount Plus, if you really like, you know, like Yellowstone, because all of that's on there. They have, you know, Tony and Ziva, NCIS, they have criminal minds. So Paramount Plus is also a good streaming service if you like shows like that, or if you like the Nickelodeon side with Victorious and Spongebob and Avatar the Last Airbender.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Alex is more a Disney girl growing up, but she watched L show too, but she's not a Disney girl.
SPEAKER_01So Paramount and Apple TV can honestly be interchangeable for me. But those are my top five. Um I do like Netflix, but like Netflix I come and go off of. So if there's a good limited series on there, I will watch it. You know, Netflix has some good shows sometimes, but now it's dad's turn to rank his top five.
SPEAKER_00I was sitting here while you were saying that. I was just thinking, I was like, why did I tell her to rank? I should have just told her to five. So now I was like, it's the pressure. So um number five for me um would probably be so Hulu and Disney are combined, correct? Number five would be for me would probably be Netflix. Um I like Netflix, um, but like, you know, they have Wednesday on there and they have other shows that I like and go back and forth. Netflix is probably low as it is because they keep going up on the prices. Y'all need to chill with that just to get y'all are getting out of hand with these prices. And then Netflix don't let you pay yearly. All right, let me pay for the year so I can get a little discount or something. So I don't like that, but um, they have good shows, and that's the original. I'm I'm an OG with that. I had them when they had the DVDs that they mailed to your house. So I'm really old school Netflix. I've been with them for a minute. Like I've been down with them for since they first came out and put Blockbuster out of business because Blockbuster didn't listen to their model, which was dumb on their part. That's a whole other thing. Like, uh, that's that was a very interesting story. As a business major, that always interests me. So number five would be Netflix for me. Number four would be um Discovery Plus. I really like Discovery Plus because I watch a lot of chapter on Discovery Plus. I'm gonna watch a lot of the home shows I just finished watching Flip or Plot Las Vegas. I watched the whole three seasons, you know.
SPEAKER_01They also have that show we really like Rock the Block on there. That's really good.
SPEAKER_00So yeah, I love Discovery Plus. I watch that a lot. Um, I would say my number three would probably be um Paramount Plus. I love Paramount Plus and the shows that they have on there. They have a lot, a lot of old other shows too. Um, you know, I could have put like I could have said stars as like number five because I like stars. They have a lot of good movies on stars, not as many good TV shows, which is why I didn't make my ranking as much because the TV shows in the movies, I like both of those. Um that's three, right?
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_00Oh, crud. I messed up um because Amazon Prime is really high on my list, too. Um, oh, I said five, I said Netflix. Four, I said Discovery Plus, three, I said what did I just say? Paramount Plus. Paramount Plus. Um, okay. Yes. Let me let me let me let me let me go back. Let me go back. Let me drop Netflix out. Let me put Discovery Plus at five. Let me put Paramount Plus at four, and let me put out let me put Amazon Prime at three. So um I forgot about Amazon Prime. Amazon Prime at three, so I'm gonna drop Netflix off. Um five is Discovery Plus, four is um Paramount Plus, three is Amazon Prime. I love Amazon Prime because they have a lot of different shows and things on there like that. Um my number two is gonna be um mm-mm. Okay. I gotta do my list again. So I'm dropping Discovery Plus off.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god.
SPEAKER_00I'm looking at the list. I should have made this list better. This is why I should, this is why. So number five is gonna be um But you really like those shows. I do. I do.
SPEAKER_01I feel like Discovery Plus is five.
SPEAKER_00So Lee Discovery Plus is five. When I say Paramount Plus is four.
SPEAKER_01And then you said Amazon Prime is three.
SPEAKER_00Okay, I'm gonna have to drop um I'm gonna HBO Max. I love HBO Max. I can tell you I HBO Max is I'm gonna put at three.
SPEAKER_01So you're dropping Amazon Prime.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I'm gonna drop Amazon Prime. I'm gonna put HBO Max at, I'm gonna put HBO Max at three because I love the shows that they have, and I watch a lot of HBO Max probably more than I watch a lot of other stuff. Um, and then I'm gonna put two, I'm gonna put um, I'm gonna put Peacock at two. Um, because Peacock um has a lot of old shows, like it has Rifleman, it has Funker Texas Ranger, which I love. They have um The Ropers. I don't know a lot of people like that. They show that spin off the Threes Company. They have Threes Company, um, Two's Company, Threes of Crowd on there.
SPEAKER_01And Peacock also has, which is why I chose it as number one, Shrek. Shrek is my all-type fake. They have a lot of DreamWorks movies on there as well.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they have a lot of mixture of old school, new school. And I if anybody who knows me, I watch Rifleman every day. Like I watch that show every day. Um, it's one of the shows I watch every day. I watch um, you know, I watch Rifleman every day, I watch Cosby Show every day, I watch Walker Texas Ranger every day. Those are shows that I watch constantly. I watch at least one episode a day of those. Um, and then I would put my number one would be HB, uh would be Disney Plus and Hulu since they're combined, because one of my favorite shows is on on Hulu is The Golden Girls. It's like one of my favorite shows of all time. And Disney has a lot of like old school, it reminds me of things when Alex was little, Hannah Montana, and That's so Raven and shows like that. And I just love I'm always been Disney. You know, anybody who knows if like we try to go to Disney at least once a year. I'm a huge Disney, Disney Plus fan, so I will say Discovery Plus, number five, number four, um Paramount Plus. No, number four, I'm gonna make that. I'm gonna take Paramount off. I'm gonna put um Amazon Prime. I like Amazon Prime, they have a lot of mixture too. And number three, no, number four, stay Paramount Plus. I think that's better than Amazon. And then number three will be HBO, will be um HBO Max, number two, Peacock, and number one um Disney Disney Tulu. It took me a long time to get that, but I got it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean it did take a while for sure. But let us know what your favorite streaming services are. And like we said, streaming services, if you obviously it's sometimes too much. It's not sometimes, it is too much to afford every single one of them. But I think you have to go based off of what your favorite shows are, you know. Like, like we said, if you're more of a crime girly, like Paramount and Peacock are your go-tos because they have most of the crime shows on there. If you're more of like an old school, like older TV shows, I would say Disney Plus with Hulu or HBO Max, which is the same thing. I keep saying HBO Max, but because they have a lot of the older like 90 shows, you know, they have Buffy the Vampire Slayer, they have Chop, they have um sorry, ER, they have Gossip Girl, Vampire Diaries, The Sopran, like they have so many older TV shows, so that would definitely be your go-to, you know. And then of course, if you were like a Disney OG person with all the movies and stuff, so that is for sure. I would head in that direction.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you hear some people who complain about Disney, they feel like what you you pay a lot of money for. Me, I pay for nostalgia, right? Notalgia. That's what I pay for because like I like to watch the old shows. Like right now, I'm behind me and Alex last night. We stayed up super, super late when we watched Fitness and Furb. I hadn't seen the new season because it's just so busy right now. But I watched the the first few episodes and it's like it's so good. Those dudes that who write that, they're so talented. It's such a good show. The fact that it's still on is still kicking and it's really, really cool. Yeah. And I just I can watch old school Disney stuff all the time. And let's not forget, they have all the Marvel movies on Disney.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, they also have all the Marvels.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. So one of my favorite Marvel movies I got to watch TV shows. Like Wanda is like probably after watching that show, she became probably my favorite character. She was she was so powerful and it was just like very heartbreaking watching that. If you haven't seen that, go watch that WandaVision. It's like one of my favorite. I think Disney did their big thing there.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, so that is also, you know, if you're a superhero, go Disney Plus HBO Max. And for I will say, like the newer shows in Libited series, Netflix and Apple TV are your go-tos. Um, so it just depends on what you like, but for sure, go with it.
SPEAKER_00And it could change. It could like if we do a ranking next month, they might change because they might move some of the shows that we like.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like I know, like for a while Peacock had um wrestling, so I don't know if they still do, but I know they're slowly moving it to Netflix. Yeah. So they had all the WWE like Royal Rumbles, you know, SummerSlam. So, but like Dad said, they're constantly changing things out. So, and constantly uh another streaming service gets it. So just drop your favorite streaming services and why you like them um and let us know. But like dad said, we've been really busy and it was very busy because we had so much going on, especially with Micah, our little cousin. We had so much going on with her. Um, and then dad got to go do something fun too. So Micah, you know, she our little track star, she did finish her track season out. Um, she did not make it all the way. She stopped at regionals. I want to say regionals, where she ran the 400 and the four by one with her team. So she did a really good job on finishing her season. She did finish strong, so we are super proud of her. And we are still hoping, or I'm holding out hope that she's gonna run next year because she keeps telling us she's retired. Yes, but when I tell you this little girl has so much talent in her body to make it this far, and it's her first year ever running. Like, I mean, she runs outside and stuff, you know, but like ever actually running track, like she's gifted, she has a gift, yes, and she made it to regionals, like that is amazing, and she just did such a good job.
SPEAKER_00And then she only ran a 400 like three times.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and she was so good, and her four by one, so they did have two groups that they did, like an A and B group, and then her four by one, she ran really well.
SPEAKER_00And got disqualified. Micah was moving.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and she did so well, so that was a whole weekend event. Um, she only had to run one day. So thank God.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she made the two hundred the two she she almost made the two hundred. She missed it. I think it was top fourteen, and she got fifteenth or sixteenth.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so she didn't make the two hundred, but we just had to do that one track day.
SPEAKER_00Um much was a lot.
SPEAKER_01It was a lot, it was like all day, and then she is.
SPEAKER_00We're waiting for a Netflix documentary on being an unc, uncle, and cousin at track meets that used to retire track runners who didn't realize how hot it was and be thankful to our coaches. That's a lot of work. It's different when you're when you're when you're the spectators alike.
SPEAKER_01And not the runner, yeah.
SPEAKER_00But much more fun being a runner.
SPEAKER_01Oh, for sure, you know, but you know, her week didn't end there either. We also had a celebration because her birthday was later that week. So we did a celebration for her. We actually went to um this place called Yo-Yo Land, Yo-Yo Adventure Land in Houston. So essentially new is a new place, brand new indoor playground. Um, check out our social medias because we did post about it on there.
SPEAKER_00Uh Alex made me jump up and down. No, I got got these old people's knees.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it was like a trampoline park, essentially. So they had like a basketball court, they had slides, and then they had um kind of like um they had video games in arcade area, and then they had that big clock that named to a profit.
SPEAKER_00There were so many teddy bears there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there was a lot. It was kind of like a creepy nightmare if you're scared of stuffed animals, kind of thing. And then it was really fun. You know, she got a cookie cake, we celebrated her with her friends and family. So, yo-yo adventure land is definitely a place to check out for your kids. Um, we didn't jump, but the kids did jump and it did look really fun. They even had the one where you jump into like the blocks and stuff.
SPEAKER_00So, shout out to um, shout out to my sister Destiny. She's trying to make it do with it, do, trying to make sure that she was celebrated and know that she was loved. So it was it was really good.
SPEAKER_01Yes, shout out to her for being such a great mom to all four of her kids. You know, it's very difficult.
SPEAKER_00They all have different personalities. My Maddie, Maddie, our little dancer, um, she's amazing. Maddie has um, she's really, really calm. She's probably the easiest of the four to being the oldest and looking to it every now and then. Now with yeah, not with her uncle. She's usually very good with her uncle, but um, yeah, she's very sassy.
SPEAKER_01She's our middle schooler, heading into middle school.
SPEAKER_00And uh my little dancer, she um plays sports for a little bit, but um, we think that dancing is gonna be our call when she's very good at dancing. She just she had a really gift for that. Micah's very athletic. Um, and then then baby Alex.
SPEAKER_01A little pooky Alex.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he's athletic as well. He's talking about he may want to run track, but he wants to play basketball. He just he played he played t-ball. That was really cute when he played T ball.
SPEAKER_01He did. And then we have the boss baby who is who don't want you in his business.
SPEAKER_00His business is his fist and his muscles. Yes. You're not getting his business.
SPEAKER_01He runs everything.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, he he especially runs his Aunt Sandy. Ain't Sandy. They were over here when um their air condition was out, and so they were staying over here with us, and um, and then it was just me, him, and a Sandy up, and it's it was hilarious watching them have conversations. Like a Sandy talks to him like he's an 80-year-old man.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and he responds to her like he's an 80-year-old man. He literally walks around, he will eat. I remember when we came, he had um my aunt had gotten Popeye's, he ate a whole chicken, a biscuit, and knocked out like he was a grown man with a whole job.
SPEAKER_00Two years old.
SPEAKER_01Two years old. His birthday's coming up, but yeah, he is he is something else.
SPEAKER_00You don't have to wonder how he feels. I told him the other day um people would sleep. I said, You can't be loud. He said, Okay, I'm not be loud. And then he he goes right into shouting. I said, I thought you said you were gonna be loud.
SPEAKER_01I'm not loud. Yeah, he's so cute. They're all so cute, you know. Shout out to my the destiny, my dad's sister, for doing a good job, doing the best she can with those kids. She's a great mom.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And, you know, we applaud her for everything she does with them.
SPEAKER_00Because they are something else. Maddie, Maddie's Maddie's already account in her teenage phase. She doesn't want to be on the phone and watch EB.
SPEAKER_01She has so much patience, my hand, sometimes, because I remember Micah had called us the other day about something, and she's like, Do you want to talk about it or do you want to draw it out? I'm like, girl, I don't know how you have patience for these kids. She has so much patience. But yeah.
SPEAKER_00And then Micah has a Micah hat attitude, and it's never Micah's fault. It's always drama, and Micah's usually involved, but it's never her polish. Everybody else is talking about it.
SPEAKER_01She's such a sour patch kid.
SPEAKER_00She's like, she's such a second kid, a middle child. These middle children, you know, like I have middle siblings. They they something else. They always like, it's like we had a group text, and my sister, Destiny was like, you know, one in four, which is me. Destiny and I are is four of us. Destiny's the baby, and I'm the oldest. And Rick, um, Ricky and Keisha are Keisha's two and Ricky's three. And she's like, Mom, you will never have these problems after middle children. So she said that, and then Keisha starts coming for me. I'm like, I didn't even say nothing to you. It is a hat start coming back for her, but these middle children, they different. They help me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't know. I'm I'm the oldest, so I I mean I guess I can be a little crazy too, but yeah. But yeah, so it was a very mica event-filled week, I would say. Um, but dad did go off on his own little adventure with his friends. Um, so I'll let him tell you guys about what he did, which we still have to post about that too. So we'll post his little adventure.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so um my friend, so my co-worker slash friend, he's my friend and my coworker, but my friend first. And he was telling me that he was he needed to take off. We have to cover for each other. And uh he was going to see AEW was coming to um the Sugarland Smart Financial Center. I was like, dang, bro, like I can't get no invite. Like, you don't want to invite me. He's like, Do you want to go? He said, Okay, tell me. He said, I said, I said, okay. So he goes and he gets tickets. My friend Garrett, he goes and he gets tickets, and he was like, Okay, I'll tell you how much it is and everything. Well, I'll he reached out to his friends who we was going with. And so he um he texted me back. He's like, Okay, we're good. It's um June 18th, I believe what it was, the day it was. It was on Wednesday, and he was like, and this, it's your birthday present, so happy birthday. So shout out to Garrett um for getting me that birthday present. And he still gave me a birthday present for work, putting pitch in money for me.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we love we love Garrett guys, it's so funny.
SPEAKER_00Garrett is hilarious. Um, and his wife, Michelle, Alex got to meet them. Michelle is funny, like she is funny without even trying. She's so serious, but so funny. Um, but Garrett is a really, really good friend. Um, big, big, big shout out to him for getting me the tickets. I had never seen AEW live. It was really funny. Garrett had never ever seen wrestling at all. Like, so it was funny. I'm like, oh my god, that's an amazing move that Garrett just like, okay. I was like, are you not impressed? And he was just sitting there laughing. So it's like for him, he was just like, you know, just to have the experience, but it was not like, you know, I grew up a wrestling fan.
SPEAKER_01And tell him who you saw there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I saw I got to see Edge and Christian, which I'm very Alex knows these are older school people. Like Alexander. Old wrestling is like jam. Alex is when she was younger, we go to wrestling all the time. She loved wrestling. We went to so many wrestling matches, just me and her by. So I passed it on. My dad used to watch wrestling and he gave it to me. My grandmother watched wrestling, and uh, I remember just wrestling, her car got stuck in a in a ditch when um before I, this is way before I was born. The wrestlers lifted the car off the ditch and put it back on the road for her. Like, did so wrestling is just in our blood. And I passed that down to Alexandra. And we used to go watch wrestling all the time. So I got to see um Edge and Christian. I hadn't seen Edge since the 2020 Royal Rumble when he came out, and I'll tell you, that's one of the loudest pops I've ever heard in person. Like, people went crazy because nobody knew when he's coming. Okay, you know, side note, like on my bucket list is to go to a WrestleMania because WrestleMania is WrestleMania. But my favorite wrestling event is the Royal Rumble. I love the Royal Rumble. Alex does too. Yeah. It's it's just so fun. You never know who's gonna come out. And you know, it's 30 superstars, they're coming out, they're going over the top rope. It's just, it's just you they get it's just it's a really good event. You see people when your Doink the Clown came out, you get to see people that you wouldn't get to see for a very long time. When your Santana Morella thing came out, like it's just like we love, like it's just a lot of stuff. So it's really cool to see some of the old school wrestlers come back mixed with the new school wrestlers. Um, and it was good. ADW Dynamite and AEW Collision, they did two shows one night, two hours each show. So it's a long day, it's a long night. A di AEW Dynamite is live. It's the one that's live. That's the one that they show when you're there and it's live. That's the one that's on TV that's live. So AEW Collusion Um collision is taped, and so that comes on like Saturday, but it's they do the whole show that day. So you get a lot of of the of the show, and so a lot of people left by like the third hour, because it's a long day. Um Garrett and his friends ended up leaving them, but we had a really, really good time. But Garrett, side note, Garrett is an early bird. So he it was fast as bedtime. Garrett goes to bed with us. Uh goes down. He's up super early, though, but he acts, I told him he acts like an old man. He's not that old, but he acts like an old man. So Garrett, Garrett them ended up leaving. I ended up staying by myself the rest of the time because I love wrestling. And I want to just see the whole thing. I had never really watched a lot of AEW, but now I'm a fan because of this show. Um, I will tell you on AEW Dynamite, the best fight to me was the Owen Hart Foundation women's tournament match, which had Mercedes Monet, aka Sasha Banks from WWE versus Hazuki. Um that was an amazing match between those two women. They put on the show. But um Mercedes always has been able to put on a good show. She tells a good story when she's in the ring. She's a she's always been a really great wrestler. She's, I think, one of the only women to held hold the building every every major wrestling thing. And then I got to see a 12-man tag match with world champion MGF in the Don um Callis family versus Marsh Mark Briscoe and the conglomeration, an AEW international champion um at um Takeish. That was really good. 10 out of 12. And I will say this MGF is a super good heel. Like he his antics made me like him more, but he was amazing. He's really good on the mic, he he looks apart. He he was he's a great wrestler. And I just they those dudes were just wrestling. So to me, those were probably some of the those were like the best matches. And like I said, I got to see Edge and Christian, which was really good. Um, you know, like the when I went to the Royal Rumble, that was a Christmas present I got. And he got, you know, um my daughters and my son-in-law, and um the family got me tickets on the first, like and the I was in the virtual.
SPEAKER_01He still even has the chair, guys.
SPEAKER_00I still have both the chairs from that event, and so it was just a really, really good thing. And then AEW Collision was next. Um, Gareth them had a long drive home. And like I told you, as fast as Ventile, so he they left. But the best match that I saw was I had never I've seen them and heard of them, but to see them in person, I was completely blown away. The Young Bucks and the Jack Perry match versus the Lethal Twist was crazy. That match was so high flying. I was sitting there with my mouth just dropping. Those dudes put on the show. Jay Lethal was there. Jay Lethal's always been a good wrestler. I got to see him wrestle at someone collision. And then um the Young Bucks and Jake and Jack Perry, they it was just it was like just highlight after highlight after highlight. That's probably the best match. And then the Owen Hart Foundation woman's second tournament match was that day. And it was My World versus the Ring of Honor Women's World Champion, Athena, which was so good. They matched, they put on this great show. My world is very good, Athena's very good. And then I don't know if I told Alex, I got to see the Hurt business, which was MVP. Um, he was the manager now, he doesn't wrestle anymore with Bobby Lashley and Shelton Benjamin. And when I tell you they came out that squashed somebody, I love Shelton Benjamin. I've always felt like he's underrated. I feel like one of the best matches I've ever seen was when him and HBK had their match. He's such an underrated wrestler. Yeah, such a good, uh, underrated wrestler. So getting to see them live, I hadn't seen Bobby Lashley in a long time. It was really good to see. And then I got to see Chris Jericho. I love Chris Jericho. Jericho said, you know, oh, he was talking to this guy. He was telling me he's like, he's like, you know, tonight, tonight we said did on at the at the um pay-per-view, we we wrestled, but tonight we fight. And so he started, he started fighting, and he ended up beating up Jericho. But I got to see Chris Jericho, which is always good. He's amazing on the mic, always has been. And so, really good night, long night, but it was a really good night. And Garrett, thank you so much for the birthday present. It was one of the best gifts I got this year. Um, and this the time that I got to spend with you and you know your two friends were really, really good. Because they're they're wrestling fans too. So it was a really good time. But just getting to hang out with Garrett was always fun because he keeps telling me, and I'm good. I told him I gotta get in a little bit into better shape, but he wants me to go rock climbing with him. And I got you, buddy. We're gonna go rock climbing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's that's not my thing, rock climbing. That's hopefully it's the one indoors and not the free rock climbing. I think it's indoors.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01But that was so exciting. Dad was sending me videos, and I was so jealous because especially him seeing the old wrestlers, I love the old wrestlers. So that would I know he had such a great time. And the Smart Financial Center, like we've said before, it's so intimate. Like I love the Smart Financial Center. It's a really good place to go see things.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I was talking about with Mega T. L. Ma. How do you say LMA? L and May, I always say her name wrong.
SPEAKER_01So it was really fun. And you know, dad, that was an exciting week because after that we very next day. We had a concert.
SPEAKER_00The very next day. And so like I'm 20 something, I'm not.
SPEAKER_01I know. Two late nights, and he still went to work. Um, I was off. I was off. But so of course, for our vinyl records spotlight, we are going to do American Teen by Khalid, because that is the one we the guy we went to go see, his concert. Um, so this was his first album that was released in 2017. The album that blew him up. Um, of course, one of the most popular songs, location from that album, and that's kind of what really put him on the map. And this album was so good because it just describes his teen years, you know, it describes what he was doing, how he was living, and it describes, you know, his teenage life in El Paso, where he's from.
SPEAKER_00El Paso. We went to El Paso to see um Cold Blade.
SPEAKER_01Um, but yeah, so that's where he's from. Um, and then this album does have this is one of my favorite albums from him. Um, he does have location, Young, Dumb and Brooke.
SPEAKER_00Young, young, young, dumb and brook, young dumb.
SPEAKER_01Coaster saved another sat love song, cold blooded, angels, um, and 18. So I really, really love this album. So I would have to say probably my favorite song from this album is Coaster. I really like that song a lot.
SPEAKER_00Mine were probably Better's Not On There, right? Huh? Better's Not On There.
SPEAKER_01Uh, I don't think Better's on Spirit.
SPEAKER_00No, Better's Not On There, right. So my favorite would be Young, Dumb and Broke.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but Better's on his Young and Spirited album.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, Young, Dumb and Broke is probably my favorite song from that album. And you know, shout out to my mama. That was the Young, Dumb and Broke's stretch segment was for her.
SPEAKER_01Oh my goodness. I am not even gonna make a comment on that. I'm not touching that. Um, but he did perform at what dad and I's one of our favorite Ben Us.
SPEAKER_00And he's become my favorite.
SPEAKER_01Neither 713 music haul. He performed there June 18th. Um, we weren't in our fancy section this time. We did sit in the 300s.
SPEAKER_00Oh, we won't we won't it we won't do that again. The section wasn't bad, but the after being at the other section for parade, yeah, yeah. Never again.
SPEAKER_01So it was a different, a different vibe for sure. Um, but it was a really good show. And then of course, um his opener, so his openers was a boy band group called Solidified.
SPEAKER_00They had somebody else though previously, but he had to take mental.
SPEAKER_01He had to take a break for his mental health issues. So they brought out Solidify.
SPEAKER_00Alex was super excited about that. I had never heard about them. She was calling my sister Destiny and telling her about it because she knew about a team.
SPEAKER_01Is from this Netflix show called Building the Band. So basically it it was it's a show that where they get together based off of never meeting each other. It's kind of like Love is Blind, except singing version. So they would like sing for each other, get to know each other.
SPEAKER_00Those boys could sing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and they formed a band. So then the band had to go through stages. And Solidify did not win um another group one frequency, but which is my aunt's favorite group. But I really thought Solidify was so good. Um, and I feel like they're bringing boy bands back. So I was really excited to see, you know, it's just so nice to see someone build up, you know, like they came from not even knowing each other, they built a band, and now they're opening for Khalid, you know, and I think that's such an amazing experience, and that's so cool. And so I was really excited to see them.
SPEAKER_00Like you felt like she played a player since the beginning.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and so they did do some of their OG songs, and then they do do some of like cover songs, but I love them so much, they were so good, and I was so happy that Khalid invited them to go on his tour with him. And Khalid, so the stage was very simple, which is it gives Khalid, and he had three dancers. But what I really loved about this concert was the fact that he sang so many of his old songs. Like he sang like his old jams, like there was a mix of new, but when I tell you he sang his old songs, like he was singing Motion, he sang Another Stat Love song, Cold Blooded, he sang um Saturday Nights, Vertigo. So he sang a lot of his old songs, which was really, really nice. And I will say, Dad really didn't know his music, but he did get crunk when he started singing fast car.
SPEAKER_00Yes, I love fast car, that's one of our songs it's oh so I told Alex, like I listened to this music, so a lot of stuff I don't know, and then I'm like, oh, I heard this song because Alex, when we're in the car, she's the DJ. So whatever she wants to play, she's the passenger princess, and she's the DJ. So she just plays what all these songs are. Yeah, I'm like, oh, I have heard that song or whatever. But I told Alex, I I bent over, I said, Does this dude sing any fast song? All this song, Liberia. I said, This dude is he sad? She started laughing. She's like, No, all the songs are flow. It was a good concert, though. It was a really good concert though, but it was really, really good.
SPEAKER_01I really enjoyed that he gave he sang a lot of his old music. So and he did invite a fan on stage to sing with him. So that was really cool crowd interact interaction. But I I really enjoyed it. You know, I love 713 music hall. I think it's such a nice music hall. Um, I think it is a great venue. I think it's small and it's very intimate, which is really nice. It reminds me of Smart Financial, except Smart Financial doesn't have like a floor, so 713 is kind of like House of Blues, but and they have um and you have a post right there, so you can just you don't have to worry about where am I gonna go to eat. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So it's right there. The post is right there too, so that makes a big difference too. So I thought it was really good.
SPEAKER_01Um, I I would want to like rank it between a four and a five stars, which is a cool play. Michael Jackson or Jackson 5. I do I I liked it because I love his music.
SPEAKER_00You know, it wasn't compared to the other concerts, you know, there wasn't a lot of dancing, there wasn't a lot of he had dancers, but it wasn't as much it was more about it's more about his vocals and him changing and stuff like that.
SPEAKER_01So I will say, like, I love him because I love his music. So I if you've never like heard of Khalid before, it would be very different to like go and because it's not like a all out, like, you know, like Cardi B performance, you know.
SPEAKER_00Or even Ray, Ray put on an amazing show. It was more just like a vi it was like a vibe, like you go, like and it's like somebody just sitting there, somebody just go to a concert, somebody just sitting there on stage the thing, like you're sitting like like a George Strait like not George Straight, uh Clint, yeah, George Straight Light concert when he would just go and you play a guitar and you listen to the vocals and things like that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00I mean, but he had dancers, he had like two or three dances. Yeah, he had two or three dancers. Yeah, he had oh, he had three. Because he had one, she was bad. That girl could dance her butt off the black. I think that's one from New York.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, she was really, really good. And he gave them their each like spotlight where they got to do a solo dance. But I thought he was really good. So it would be between a coplay and a Jackson 5 for me for sure.
SPEAKER_00Um, I'll give him a coplay because, like I said, there wasn't like, you know, it was just mostly vocals and doing things that I give them um for bringing um Solidified out. They were really good. They harmonize so amazing, their voices are amazing. I like shows like that because you know people really can sing. You have to be able to sing to be able to get on those types of shows. But but I would give it a coplay. Um I think that it was just about him coming out there, let me sing my songs, let me do my thing. He interacted with the crowd a little bit. So I would give it a coplay.
SPEAKER_01He was really, really good. And of course I love Solidified and I hope that this is their opportunity for them to shine and maybe hopefully one day take the stage on their own. Like I said, it's always so nice to see where people started and see where they're going. So super proud of that, super happy, but overall it was so good. Um, this is the first time I've seen Khalid like have his own concert. I saw him open for someone else before, but he was really good. What concert was that? Let's not bring it up because dad always wants to bring up Ed Sharon. And we're gonna see Ed Sharon this year together.
SPEAKER_00So Yeah, because she she she paid the ticket away. I told her I was gonna go with it, and then she's like, Oh, my friend's going with me, but we're supposed to go. So I hadn't seen Khalid. This was my first time seeing Khalid. So I guess we were rectifying that this year. Did we see Khalid and Ed Sharon?
SPEAKER_01Yes, and he gets it better because they have a full concert. He gets to see them perform full concerts.
SPEAKER_00Instead of just uh a whole little, yeah. But um, it was no, he was I thought he was good. He has a he sounds just like his record. Um, he has a he has a really amazing voice. And you know, him coming from El Paso, anybody from Texas, you know, you gotta throw you gotta support him. And El Paso reminds you of um how far Texas is from each other.
SPEAKER_01Like, because El Paso is really far from the yeah, I saw we flew down there. I mean, to drive it's yeah, people are like, are you driving?
SPEAKER_00Like, absolutely not, we're not driving at it. So I guess a drive, like and it just shows you how big Texas is. Texas is huge.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's very big. I mean, you can drive ten hours and still be in Texas, so there's that. But El Paso was a great time. You know, I think when you find stuff, I I think you can find something to do in every city you go to if you really look and you know, every city is a new city to have an adventure in, so yeah, we had a good time, and that's that's when we started saying we need to try to take at least one trip to a concert out of town every year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um, but El Paso was amazing, and I you know, shout out to Coldplay for choosing them. They had their reasons for choosing them, but they didn't come anywhere else in Texas.
SPEAKER_01And so and I think that was like their last time touring too for a while. You know, they all people say they stop touring and then they'll come back.
SPEAKER_00If you if you if you have an opportunity to see Coldplay, I want to take away from Cleve, but if you have an opportunity to see Coplay, go. Like, don't Yeah, they were really good. Do you know, like if you have a chance to see somebody you really want to see, like Alex and I were talking about, we didn't go see Monica and Brandy when they came, and I regret that so much. I was listening to Monica Brandy some other day. The boy is mine, I was like, I regret not going to that concert.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so highly recommend, you know, go see that concert you want to go see. Um, but like dad said, of course we have to go visit the post, post Houston, if we are near 713. And this time, even though dad wanted to get those grilled cheeses again, so good. We did try something different. Um, I might be butchering this. Cisco's pasta. I want to say that's how it's said. We got I got the shrimp cajun pasta, and then I got the steak cage and pasta, and it was good too. Really, really good. And I would definitely get it again, I would say it was super good.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I don't I think we're done. Um I I don't want to say that, but I think we're done with 713 this year. So we won't get a chance. But the goal was Alex and I were talking that even though we found something good, that when we go, we need to try something different.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, because like we said before, it's a food haul. So there's so many different um foods, so many create cultures, so many different types of food, you know, Asian cuisine, Italian, they have Nashville hot chicken sandwiches, they have Mexican food, and so it's really, really good. And then of course, I have to get the flour and cream ice cream there.
SPEAKER_00She doesn't, she doesn't, she doesn't um detour from her dessert but she gets the same dessert every time.
SPEAKER_01The biscock cookie ice cream. It's my favorite.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I got a what was it, a milk and cookie ice cream? It was really good.
SPEAKER_01Milk and cookie ice cream. And then this time we actually I showed Dad because if you go to the rooftop of Post, you can see the skyline of downtown Houston.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, last time we were there it was raining. Oh you but you have to walk up a lot of stairs.
SPEAKER_01A lot of stairs.
SPEAKER_00And you get the third spots. You get the third spot that heat hits you like abyss. You're like, oh, goodness gracious.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's it's I hate stairs. I hate stairs, and it is so hot up there, but it's such a beautiful view. I do definitely recommend going to see it. And they have they do have a lot of events up there, and I told dad there has to be an elevator because they do have a farmer's market that they do there. And I know those people aren't carrying all that stuff upstairs. So, you know, they do yoga on the rooftop, they have a lot of different events. You can do a wedding up there, which I'm sure it's very expensive, but I highly recommend post-Huston is so good. There's something for everybody, and then you even get a view with it. And then when we went, they were playing like the World Cup on the big screen.
SPEAKER_00There are a lot of people that just to watch the World Cup and eat there. It's just it's always something like you know, when we went, the parking's not cheap, but getting out, like to me, that's the biggest thing. Like, we're able to stay the whole concert. We don't leave early. Um, and we get to stay the whole time, and we don't, we're not sitting in a parking lot for an hour. We're home within a a a a really good time, and um, it's just a really good time. The post season you eat, you can talk. Me and Alex have a really good time. We walk around. Last time we were there, there was it was prom. This time it was the World Cup. And um, you see the people in their World Cup and the people just you know, just hanging out and doing stuff, and then there was somebody doing a dance class there while we were there. So it's it's a lot of it's something.
SPEAKER_01So much going on.
SPEAKER_00It's it's it's a good time. And I if you get a chance, like honestly, that is probably my favorite part. Place for concerts now. Like I love Toyota Center and all that other stuff, but and I love NRG, but those are bigger venues and 713 music. Like even when we were sitting this time, it wasn't it wasn't where we were before, but just still good seats because it's so small and intimate, like Alex said. But next time we will begin to be out PCs next time we go. But I think we're done because um, you know, we were uh we're gonna try to go see TI, but that was around the time when we had to go see Mary J. Vlige, so that's a different story, different time. But uh I love 713 Music Hall, and if there's somebody I want to see there, I will definitely not miss the opportunity to go again. If nothing else, just to go eat at the Post Season too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's so good. It's so so good.
SPEAKER_00And you don't have to have a concert to go eat at the post teastern.
SPEAKER_01No, you don't. You can just go. I mean, people go just to walk around and eat, like it's its own separate menu from 713. There's people playing Uno there in cards and stuff like that. It's its own separate entity. Like it's it's just happens to be close to 713, so it's convenient to eat there if you're gonna go to a concert. And 713 does have food you can purchase and stuff too. So if you don't want to eat at the post, or maybe you're running late, you can't eat at 713.
SPEAKER_00Um I don't know how good the food is at 713, but I can tell you the post, there's so much good things there that you can have. I only thing, only uh which I get the only thing I hate is that the post isn't open after the concert. That would be so cool if they could have been open after, but I get it. People want to go home and concert's not over till 11, 1030, 11 o'clock.
SPEAKER_01But they want to go home after a long day at work. But um, it was really good. And of course, getting into one of my faves, it's our it's not called Chop segment. It's called I always forget.
SPEAKER_00Daughter's Basket Dad's Choice. Is that what it's called? Is that what we got?
SPEAKER_01So we change it so many times, Gabriel. We're gonna have to put a name and we're gonna have to stick with it because we we get like a say a one-worded name or something or two words because it's just like I don't know what we're I mean, it's only four words.
SPEAKER_00They're daughter's basket, dad's choice.
SPEAKER_01Four too many, you know. It is four too many. We're gonna have to figure it out, but this um challenge because it's her basket and it's whatever I decide. Yes. So because El Paso and El Paso, we had really good Mexican food there. So the challenge is to create a Mexican dish, and these are the ingredients. Um, of course, as you know, this is kind of like chop. I give dad ingredients, he cheats, and then he creates a dish out of it. So his four ingredients are potatoes, ground beef, tortillas, and cheese. So, dad, tell us what you decided to make.
SPEAKER_00Okay, so I decided to make drum roll please Khalid's better fried plotas. So um a flawta is a um uh it's it's is the the recipe is inspired by Khalid's biggest hit using fried potatoes, ground beef, tortillas, and cheese. So I'm gonna attempt to make these flautas. Let me let me shout out um to Griselda, my friend Griselda, makes the most amazing flautas. She she should make me some soon, just saying. Griselda, so if you're here, let's just make me something.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we're gonna see how this works because I don't think dad's ever made flautas before. My mom actually has she's getting better at making them. My mom can make some really good flautas. So I know dad can too, because dad can cook his butt off.
SPEAKER_00So I came up with this. I was trying to figure out. So we use the ground beef. The the ingredients we're gonna use ground beef, the potatoes. Um, we'll peel and dice those into small cues. We'll use Mexican blend cheese or cheddar cheese, but most likely Mexican cheese. We're gonna use flour tortillas, or we can use corn if we prefer, but we'll probably, it just depends on what mood Alex will be in. We'll use either corn or flour. Um, we need vegetable orange, flour, the potatoes, and the flautas. We need garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and chili powder, and some salt and pepper to taste. And then the optional toppings, you can use shower cream, salsa, guacamale, pico de gallo, or shredded lettuce. So step one is the young dummy broke. We're gonna dice our potatoes in a small cube, heat the oil up, fry the potatoes till they grow to brown and crispy outside while stand soft inside. We'll drain them on a paper towel and we'll season them with salt. Then step two is the location. And another skillet, we're gonna brown the ground beef. We're gonna add the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, chili powder, salt and pepper, and then we'll drain the grease. Step three is better, because then we're gonna, you know, everything gets better. We'll mix the crispy fried potatoes with the beef. We're gonna put in like um a cup and a half of threaded cheese until it starts melting. Then the filling just got better. And then step four, be 18. Warm the tortillas for about 15 seconds so we can, they're easy to roll. And then we'll put like two to three tablespoons of filling near one edge and roll it tightly. And then step five, we're gonna talk. We're gonna place each flouster seam side down so it doesn't talk itself open while waiting to fry. And then step six is the skyline. We're gonna heat the oil up, fry the flousters two to three minutes per side until they're beautifully golden and crispy, looking good enough to reach the skyline. And then step seven is Saturday nights. We're gonna drain on the wire rack our paper towel, sprinkle it with the remaining cheese until while they're still hot. And then step eight is love lies. That's when we'll top it with the sour cream, sauce of guacamole, letters, and pico de gallo. Everybody will have you telling love lies. This food is amazing.
SPEAKER_01Okay, I'm excited because I do like flauta, so I'm excited to see how this is gonna go. I am so excited. Because I know dad can cook, so I'm excited to see. I did not know what he was gonna come up with. She wasn't expecting flauta. She wasn't expecting I was not expecting that at all. Of course, you know, when I come up with things in my head, I have a dish in my mind based off of it, but I was definitely not expecting flauta.
SPEAKER_00What dish did you think I was gonna make?
SPEAKER_01Um, so not that you were gonna make, but just like what my mom makes this thing called like um picadillo. So it's potatoes, ground beef, and cheese that she makes, and you can put in a tortilla or bread. So like that's what I had in mind when I I I usually have a dish in my head and I just pull ingredients from that dish. So that's where I get my ingredients from. But I not expect flauta, so I like to surprise you every now and then. I'm excited to see, and I know it's gonna taste great. So we will see how that's gonna go pretty soon. Um so I know that we were talking about streaming services earlier and like TV shows and all that. So it got me thinking, and then also too, you know, because Khalid's from El Paso and my brain just works crazy, but El Paso reminds me of like old time Mexico. So it just brought me to thinking about Blockbuster and how different the streaming services are to Blockbuster, you know, like in the early, early days, you know, like in dad's time, you know, because what a dinosaur brome the ear the early days, guys. I know that dad's that old, but you know, so basically my question is was movie night more exciting when you had to rent a movie or a streaming better because everything is available instantly. And so, you know, I do know a little bit. I don't know if I went to Blockbuster. I don't think it's a good idea.
SPEAKER_00I think it was before your time. I think they closed. I think they closed before.
SPEAKER_01I think it was before, but I do remember for me, um, my grandma and I, my mom, um, we would have movie nights. So I would go to her house on the weekends, and you know, we would always go to like they were all set of Walgreens, CVS, red box movies. So we would go and we would, I thought it was the most exciting thing. We would go rent a movie from these red box movies. So it kind of was like a mini blockbuster because it was just like you pick your movie and they give it to you instantly from this like red box. It's not the same. It it's not the same, it's not a store, it's just kind of like like an ATM movie machine, essentially. And so we would always rent these movies and we would go, I would spend the night at her house, and we'd go have breakfast, and she dropped me off back home. Um, but I just remember we would always do that, and the movie would always get most of the time would be Nanny McPhee. We would always get those two movies. So I remember that. Um now, of course, when I go to her house, we stream everything, so we don't do that. I don't even think they have Red Box movies anymore.
SPEAKER_02Thanks for seeing me.
SPEAKER_01And so I never really went to Blockbuster. I mean, I remember dad would go to I don't I forgot what that movie. I know there was fries and there would be a lot of movies, but it was another movie place that you would go shop in to get movies that was buy fries.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, it was um it was um their their clothes too. It was uh yeah, there was it was a used um store. You could go sell your movies there and you can buy used movies there and something that labor cheaper. Now spent hours and hours there.
SPEAKER_01Cause dad was like a collector, like how I love to collect books. I would collect movies and TV shows. And I I know he would always talk tell me about Blockbuster, you know, growing up. He would go to Blockbuster. I don't think I ever went. I knew that.
SPEAKER_00No, it was 2004 was like when it was the really big, but by that time, um I forget when Netflix started, but by that time we were getting Netflix movies out by the end. We were we had we had the a service to that.
SPEAKER_01So did they give like VH tapes thing?
SPEAKER_00We did back in the day. We didn't have DVDs, you know them old.
SPEAKER_01It was VHS tapes.
SPEAKER_00And they had their whole thing was be kind, rewind. That was the line. If you didn't rewind, you got fine. Like they would charge you for that if you didn't rewind the tape. You had to rewind the tape before you returned it. Yes, I am VHS. I am VHS old. I am VHS O.
SPEAKER_01That is so crazy. I didn't know that because the movie just stops, right? You have to go all the way to the beginning.
SPEAKER_00Back to the beginning. So um, side story, my brother Ricky um loved, we have we had um, I, you know, I I don't want to say, but um we had a lot of movies. Um my mother had my mother had some extra VCRs, that's all I'll say about that. And so we had a lot of movies, and so she would we had movies, and my brother loved Three Ninjas. He watched Screen Ninjas all the time, like because he was always trying to figure out how to beat me up. And so he would watch Scre Ninjas and he would just rewind it, rewind, and rewind it. And he'll do something and he'll like scream like, ah, sneak attack. I don't know why he screamed. It wasn't a good sneak attack. And he'd come in and I just start beating them up, throwing them across the room. My mom said, All I see all of a sudden just Ricky fly from our room to hit to my mama's room. And she'd like, quit beating up my baby. She's always babying him. I'm like, mama, just you know, stay on my business, you know, Malachi. My this is my business right here. And Ricky was getting it. And so he would, I would beat him up, and then he would, he would, I would be like, I'll be on the phone back, hold on to take Ricky. I'm like, Yeah, they already knew. So I beat him up, then he'd go back in the other room and watch them three ninjas again. He'd be right, rewinding. You hear him like, could you rewind it to a part to figure out where he went wrong in this whole little thing? And he would like me to tell this story. He got beat up a million times. I beat him up a million times. He won one time. I was coming in the house and he hit me, he jumped from behind the door and hit me low and took a running and was like, Mom, I beat him up, I beat up no stem. But all excited, he likes to he likes to that story to be told, even though he got beat up millions of times. But that one story is his story to fame.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I remember you telling me that story. That was so funny. That was hilarious. I still I remember too the other story where where the middle child did something crazy and my dad said that he him and my uncle went to the Blockbuster to go pick a movie out.
SPEAKER_00Yes. Okay, so um, I'll make the story short. So what happened was when we went to Blockbuster, I was trying to, you know, before there was Harry Potter, I was trying to make sure my brother was the boy who lived. So my sister, my mom, you know, before, you know, she before she wore sandals to um a dirt road, then you know, she had she had them hands. So Alec just looked at me when I said that. She'd go kill me. Um we I was supposed to pick up Keisha. Keisha refused to come home. I was like, Keisha, I'm not asking you. Mama said that you have to come home. She's like, I'm I going. So um, you know, my cousin, uh my cousin told her, my cousin Maurice, like, I got your back. Don't worry about it. Like, you're not going anywhere. So I go home. I'm scared because at this point, like, I didn't do what mama told me to do. And so mama's like, where's Lakeisha? And I was like, Oh, she said she wouldn't come in. I was like, she won't come in. And she said, What did you say? And she's in my face, I need to take my hat off, I'm sweating, I'm nervous. I said, She wouldn't come in. When I tell you that we got from the north side to the southwest side, seemed like in like five minutes. And as soon as she got there and she knocked on the door, my cousin, my cousin Maurice was like, All right, gotta go and lock themselves in the bath in the in his in his room. And then everybody else was just like hiding because my mama's aunt was hiding, my other little cousin was hiding, my aunt's husband was hiding. And she was like, Let's go in. Keisha, like, I'm not going. I promised your mama stuff to toe in the door. And he's like, You always make me do what I want to do. So she comes home. So we go home. And I was like, I'm leaving. Like, I'm taking Ricky out of here. Destiny, I don't know where Destiny was at the time, but I was like, I'm leaving. So Ricky's oblivious. We're at Blockbuster. He's all excited, having all putting over. Yeah, he's like, he, he's just oh, just like whatever. So they put they literally put us out of Blockbuster. We're closing, sir. So we leave. I get back home. I go in Keisha's room. I don't see Keisha. I go look around. I don't see Keisha. This house is not that big. I was like, oh my God, mom and then kill Keisha and bury the body. And I was like, I don't need to be a witness to this. I don't know anything that happened. You know, if Keisha wasn't gone, she was in the closet hiding, um, upright.
SPEAKER_01We'll have to like get her to tell the story too. It is so funny when she tells it.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, so um that was Keisha's time. She said, Let me let me just do my time. She had two years. She let me do my time and get out because she went too far. And um, I don't know why she played that game, but mama. Mama was, you know, mama was not the one.
SPEAKER_01And if you ever, I think we've posted pictures of my grandmother, my mama, on our social media. She is like so small. She's a skinny queen, little, and so short, and she has everybody scared of her.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she is um, you know, she mama weighed um like for her whole life, like barely weighed a hundred pounds. Like, but I was probably bigger than her by the time I was in sixth grade.
SPEAKER_01And she had uh four kids. Four kids. Four C-sections. Like, she is really that she's that girl, guys.
SPEAKER_00She's that girl. So, like, don't let the defty feet fool you. She, she, she, she's the one.
SPEAKER_01He's gonna get him. He's gonna go, he's gonna disappear soon, guys. I'm not gonna have a podcast partner anymore.
SPEAKER_00I might be the one running the blacklist and still trying to hide. Exactly. So a couple of things.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and he has not. I've only said good things. I'm the good one. But speaking of um, I I remember you saying that the Ricky used to watch Three Ninjas.
SPEAKER_00He did, he would over again and over again.
SPEAKER_01So my question to you, because obviously that's my uncle's answer, but what's a movie you watched so many times that would it would have paid itself off as a rental? Like if you were to stream it, which movie would it be?
SPEAKER_00So um for me, it would probably be growing up, like, well, you know, like I don't want to be putting it out there, but I'm I'm a huge Julia Roberts fan, love Julie Roberts. But if I it's like back in the day when we were younger, we our family loved action movies. We watched a lot of Steven Segal, a lot of um J Um John Claude Van Damme movies. That's what we watched a lot of and watched a lot of Denzel. We are a huge Denzel Washington. Denzel Washington is one of the greatest actors to ever live. Argue with your mama, not me.
SPEAKER_02Period.
SPEAKER_00And so um we watched a lot of his movies. So Ricky, Ricky was a very big ones. If he liked something, he would watch it. Oh, when I tell you, he he broke the video, the VHS, rewinding it. And um he will rewind and watch it over. He loved three ninjas. We loved uh like old school stuff, like you know, I loved He-Man, um, the He-Man She Rosa Um uh movie. We I would watch that a lot growing up too. But like, yeah, we, you know, DVDs came along and we thought that was amazing. But yeah, we anything action-related, we just loved. We will watch over and over again as a family. We love watching um Above the Law and things like that. That's when you know I felt like Steven Seagal movies were really good back in the day. I don't, you know, I still watch them now, but they're not as good to me as they were with Mark for Death. It's one of my favorite Steven Segall movies ever. And um, we Lionheart, like we watched watch stuff like that over and over again.
SPEAKER_01So I yeah, I feel like mine would be, I was obsessed with obviously the greatest movie of all time from Justin McKellar. Don't say not just it. Um, cinematic classic. Like if you guys haven't seen it, go watch it.
SPEAKER_00She loves that movie.
SPEAKER_01Nothing can ever top that movie, but I do remember being obsessed with Big Trouble in Little China. Yes. I love that movie, so that was those would probably be my two movies.
SPEAKER_00Mine will be too. Like, I love Ferris Beelard's Day Off. I watched Ferris Beelard. Like, yeah. I love that's one of my favorite movies. And anything, um, like pretty much that had fighting in it. Like, I still like a lot of fight movies. That's why I love the John Wick um so much. I love John Jake.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, my mom will actually got me into those movies as well, too. John Wick. Don't take his dog, guys.
SPEAKER_00Yes, he was. Like another equalizer with Dindel Washington, it's good in the Queen Latifah. I haven't watched the show, but I've heard she did an amazing job.
SPEAKER_01I will watch anything Queen Latifah is in.
SPEAKER_00I absolutely bassett for me. She's a great actor. She didn't uh um um Living Single didn't get enough credit. Let me let me put that out there. Living Single.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that show was so good.
SPEAKER_00That was so good.
SPEAKER_01So good. Um, and then um for my other question before we get into our fun rapid fire questions. Um, do we spend more time picking a movie now than actually watching one? I think I do just because I feel like there's so one, I'm an indecisive person in my whole entire life. I can't ever just make a decision. But I feel like we'll get into that. I feel like there's so much to watch. There's so many movies, there's so many TV shows, and I just can't pick one half the time. I always go back to my OGs. So I do feel like there's so much, there's so many options, you know. Like when you would go to like a blockbuster or even like when you would go rent a movie, like sometimes a movie is not there, so you you know, because it's rented out, but I feel like there's so many options, so it's so hard to just choose one.
SPEAKER_00You know how you have no idea of the disappointment in that when you pulled that back and that movie wasn't there. You have no idea of the disappointment. You don't have that problem. I I, you know, let me let me backtrack a little bit too because we you asked this question and I didn't ask and I didn't answer it. You said, was a movie night more exciting when you had to rent a movie or when you're streaming it? And I never really answered that question. So let me answer that with about the same time of answering this. We took longer to pick the movie out, probably, because going, I can tell you, it is one of the best, one of my best core memories. It's going to a movie of going to Blockbuster or even when it had Hollywood video. And you go to those stores with your family, with your mom, your dad, your grandparents, or whatever, and you go and you pick a movie out, and you're trying to agree as a family which movie y'all want to watch, and going and having that that Friday or Saturday night of just watching a movie like that family time, which is missing a lot now. People, a lot of people don't do that. We would go as a group, me and my siblings, and we pick out a movie with my mom, and we pick out a movie and just go, and then we go home, we pop popcorn. Those are some of the best memories I have is just spending time with my mom and my siblings. Those are memories, core memories that I have that my mom made for us. She had four kids, but she figured out how to give us all individual time, but then at the same time give us time together. So for me, streaming is very easy, but that spending time with your family and going an hour to pick a movie out. If I said you don't understand when you pick a movie out and then it's not that, that's just the most disappointing thing. Those are core memories that I have. Being able to um watch a movie of my mama, watch a movie with Keisha, watch a movie with Ricky and Destiny. Those are core memories, picking it out together. Those are really fun times. Like sometime my cousin Maurice would come over. It was just good times pop popcorn. We laughing at a movie or watching an Eddie Murphy movie, Beverly Hills Cop, or anything that we were watching as a family. It was just a really, really good time to do that. So for me, like, you know, like I really, really, really, really enjoyed those memories of doing that. And it is difficult. As a kid who grew up in the time that I grew up in, we didn't have all these TV. We didn't have all these movies. Like, there's 50 HBOs now. When we grew up, it was one. And, you know, and we didn't, and everybody didn't have cable at home. We didn't have all these channels at home. TB went off. That's how old I am. TV went off when I was younger. You know, certain channels went off. So we didn't have all that. So now sometimes it is overwhelming. Like you're like, oh my God, there's no kids say there's nothing to watch. Bro, you have so much stuff to watch, it's it's crazy. So I think sometimes it's look it is a little bit overwhelming. And then, you know, trying to find something that you watch. That's why I'm like Alex. Like I like I said earlier, I watch Rifle Man and Walker and stuff like that every day because I need the way my brain works. I have I have a little ADD the way my brain works. I just need noise. And I need and I need stuff that I'm I've seen a million times because if I'm watching something that I haven't seen, I'm not gonna pay attention to what I'm doing. But if it's just background noise, I can just, you know, that I'm used to.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, and that leads me to a little bonus question. How many movies could you rent at a time?
SPEAKER_00Um You I I don't really think, if I remember right, it wasn't a limit, but you had to return them in a few days. So you couldn't just in a week or something, you have to return it. Yeah, you have, you know, it's like it's this old Blockbuster joker says, Hey, can I rent um can I rent Batman Forever? You go to Blockbuster, can I rent Batman Forever? And you say it's like, no, it's due by next week.
SPEAKER_01Oh, okay. So it's kind of like the library. It's kind of like going to the library, I guess.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, you have you you only have so many that you have movies, you know, good you I mean, even if it's two hours movies, like you know how you can only watch so many.
SPEAKER_01I do wonder that though, because like if you think about it, Blockbusters was like the library of movies. Because like now with books, which I guess I get well, I don't know, because like with books, like there's so many like digital, you know, there's Kendall, there's Nook, but I guess because you have to buy them and you still can get a book for free at the library. And of course there's so many other things you can do at the library, like study, then they have rooms, they have computers and all that stuff, but it is kind of like that. So I wonder how libraries have lasted longer, which I'm very happy because I'm I'm a library girl, like I support go support your local libraries, but that is for sure an interesting thing.
SPEAKER_00You know, what what's crazy about this is like Alex said that, and I don't know if I said that before we were talking in this, still a lot of people who who buy a lot of books and buy a lot of books in Alexander.
SPEAKER_01It's keeping the book like book Barnes and Nobles and stuff in business, and I will say also support your local bookstores, guys. Some of the smaller mom and pop places, but I think too, because like I'm I was such a I want to read a book because I like the feel of it in my hands, but I like to read big books also, so I do like to have it in my Kindle, and also my eyes aren't the best, so I like to put my font like super big on my Kindle, but I do think books like I still to this day want a bookshack, like a book cottage in my backyard, like a bookshed.
SPEAKER_00You talk about that all the time.
SPEAKER_01I really do want one, and I think because the book covers are so beautiful. Like I always say, if I read a book on my Kindle, I reward myself with the actual physical book. I just have no space. That's the only thing about books. Like, I have no space to put them.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, she has a whole bunch of books in storage too that she did when she has her own house. She said that she's gonna have her own library, like Beauty and the Beast. That's one thing she liked about Beauty and the Beast, because Beast had that whole library. That's one of her favorite parts, even as a little girl.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I am a book lover for sure. But um, getting into our fun rapid fire questions. So these are quick, Dad. Don't take your time. Okay. So Bossy. She's been bossy all day. First one. I've been bossy my whole life, okay. So you should be used to me by now. First one horror or romance? Um, romance. I would go romance to you. Movie theater or couch. Couch. That I love a good movie theater. I will go sit in a movie theater, fall asleep, eat popcorn.
SPEAKER_00You do be wasting your money falling asleep at the movie.
SPEAKER_01I I I love a good movie theater. Okay. Original movie or remake? Original or is usually better. Yeah, I'll say original too. Netflix or Disney Plus?
SPEAKER_00Disney Plus.
SPEAKER_01Disney Plus for me. Movie or TV show?
SPEAKER_00Um, a good TV show is really good to me. I like a movie is short. You two hours of the TV show, like I watched Wondivision, it was like six hours of my life, but a good TV show.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm gonna pick TV show. Subtitles or no subtitles?
SPEAKER_00Your answer is subtitles. Mine is no subtitles.
SPEAKER_01I love subtitles.
SPEAKER_00All the time.
SPEAKER_01Um binge or weekly episodes.
SPEAKER_00Um, I grew up in the the the 80s and the 90s. Um I do not like weekly episodes. I I love binge episodes. Give me binge all day. I don't want to wait next week to watch the show. Give me a tip all in one day.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I will for sure binge a show. I like, you know, because sometimes now, like especially with these new shows, like I remember with Stranger Things, they released it in parts. So they released like three episodes at a time, and then like you have to wait like a month until the other three episodes were released. And I was like, I'm gonna wait, I'm gonna wait. Yeah, no, I watched it before, but I do like Netflix.
SPEAKER_00Netflix Netflix spoiled us. They they started that. I I'm telling you, as somebody who grew up in the times that I grew up in, you didn't want to have to do that. Like you had to wait and don't miss a show. If you miss the show, you went to it again.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, so I will say binge, but let us know your responses, and it is now time to get into our fun blind ranking gang, which I think this is dad's favorite, one of his favorite segments to blind rank. So, of course, we are going to blind rank Khalid songs, and of course, we rank the songs that he sang at the concert. So we will give you our top five in random order. We don't know what's coming next. So the first song is Saturday night. Um, I don't know. That I think this will be a little hard because I don't know if Dad really needs his songs.
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna put that at number, I'll put that at number five for me.
SPEAKER_01Saturday nights, I'm gonna put at four because I really like that song.
SPEAKER_00I'll put it at five.
SPEAKER_01Um the next one is Young, Dumb, and Broke. I know where that's going for that.
SPEAKER_00Number one for me because I I I if I don't get better, I will be upset. So number one is Young, Dumb and Broke.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna say that'll be five. No, Young, Dumb and Broke. I'm gonna go with three for that because I do like that song. Um the next one is Saved. I'm gonna put that at five for me.
SPEAKER_00I'll put Coaster at three.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna put that at one.
SPEAKER_00I like it out for his song. Eastside. Okay, that's my number two. I was thinking. Absolutely for me. I was like, that's why I put Young Dummin Broke at number one because I was looking better is my favorite song that he sings.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, East Side is with Benny Blanco.
SPEAKER_00Solid girls' husband. I've heard that one.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's his song. But um, thank you guys so much for coming out, listening to our podcast. Um, you know, we are streaming our our podcast is streaming on Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music. It's also streaming on um what's that one you say?
SPEAKER_00Um iVox.
SPEAKER_01iVox. Yeah, on iVox. And then of course, follow our socials. We have um Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, um, Facebook. So follow us on there. And then also don't forget to join us next time. We're going to talk about um dad's fun little birthday trip that he has to take.
SPEAKER_00It was really good. Um look really excited about it.
SPEAKER_01We're heading to Vegas, and you know, I know they say what happens in Vegas stays in Vegas.
SPEAKER_00But not on a Dad Please podcast. We're gonna talk about it.
SPEAKER_01Talk about it. So join us then, and thank you so much for listening.
SPEAKER_00Hey, okay, got something for you. It's great. So I was at the store the other day, and it was something that said you have to be over 21 to buy it. So I was trying to look for my license to show them my ID, and my blockbuster card fell out, and then um the um lady said at the counter. Never mind, you don't need that.
SPEAKER_01Dad, please.
