For five chapters, we've journeyed through the rise of monotheism, the fall of kingdoms, the worship of false gods, the pool of ideolatry, the tension between faith and philosophy, and humanity's endless search for truth. We've confronted polytheism, atheism, agnosticism, and the struggle between trusting the living author of life or placing faith in idols, status, power, and human understanding. But now, every road we've traveled leads us here. Chapter six, the Holy Bible. Today, the Holy Bible is far more than a collection of roughly thirteen hundred pages filled with black and red texts. Within its pages are wisdom, prophecy, history, poetry, law, and powerful stories that have strengthened faith and transformed lives from generations around the world. For billions of people throughout history, the Bible has not simply been read, it has been trusted, memorized, protected, debated, preached, translated, and carried through some of humanity's darkest memories. Kings have sworn upon it. Nations have built laws around principles drawn from it. Families have treasured its words through the ages, carrying them from one generation to the next as a sacred inheritance of hope, faith, and truth. The Holy Bible is made up of different numbers of books depending on the tradition. Protestant Bibles contain sixty-six books, thirty-nine in the Old Testament, and twenty-seven in the New Testament. Catholic Bibles contain seventy-three books, including seven additional books in the Old Testament, known as the Deuterocanonical books. Eastern Orthodox Bibles usually contain between seventy-five and eighty-one books, depending on the specific tradition and canon recognized by the branch of Christianity. The word canon comes from a term meaning rule, measure, or standard. Over centuries, religious communities debated, examined, and recognized which writings they believe carried divine authority and spiritual authenticity. Some books were universally accepted early on, while others became subjects of discussion and theological examination. Prophets, apostles, historians, poets, and inspired authors first penned these writings while councils, rabbis, biblical scholars, patriarchs, monks, bishops, scribes, theologians, and early church leaders played vital roles in preserving, examining, and identifying which writings would eventually be recognized as sacred scripture. The earliest writings that became part of the Holy Bible likely began between fourteen hundred BCE and twelve hundred BCE during the time traditionally associated with Moses. Moses is historically connected to the first five books of the Bible, known as the Torah or Pentateuch, Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. These writings became foundational to Jewish religious identity and later profoundly shaped Christianity itself. For centuries, Jewish and Christian believers have traditionally held that Moses wrote these books under divine inspiration. Within both traditions, Moses is revered as the great lawgiver, prophet, and covenant leader through whom God delivered his commandments to Israel. Because of this long standing tradition, the first five books of the Bible are commonly known as the books of Moses or the Pentateuch. At the same time, questions about the authorship of these books have been debated for centuries, while many maintain that Moses was the primary author. Others believe scribes, priests, or editors may have helped preserve, organize or complete portions of the text. These discussions stem from variations in literary style, parallel or duplicated narrative accounts, differing patterns or vocabulary and terminology, and passages that appear to reflect events or circumstances beyond Moses' lifetime. And this is where discussions surrounding scripture often become complex. This is a very complex issue because questions about the Bible involve both historical study and matters of faith. Historians, archaeologists, linguists, and theologians examine the texts through manuscripts, language, cultural context, archaeology, and historical evidence. Religious believers often approach the same text through faith, tradition, spiritual conviction, and divine revelation. While these perspectives frequently intersect, they can also lead to different interpretations and ongoing debate regarding the Bible's origins, authorship, and authenticity and authority. But whether one approaches the Bible academically, historically, or spiritually, the reality remains that these writings survived across thousands of years in a way few ancient texts ever have. Keep that in mind, please. They were copied by hand long before the invention of the printing press. Scribes spent years carefully preserving every word, letter, and line. Through centuries of war, exile, persecution, and political turmoil, generations of scribes, scholars, and faithful guardians of the text labored to preserve these writings of those who would come after them. The Bible itself was not written all at once. It was composed across roughly fifteen hundred years by numerous authors from vastly different backgrounds, including prophets, kings, shepherds, priests, scribes, fishermen, physicians, apostles, and eyewitnesses. Some books identify their composers directly, while others are attributed through longstanding religious tradition, historical testimony, linguistic analysis, and early Jewish and Christian records preserved across generations. The Old Testament was written primarily in Hebrew with portions composed in Aramaic. The New Testament was written primarily in Koine, Greek, the common language spoken throughout much of the Roman world during the first century. Over the centuries, these writings were translated into Latin, Syriac, and Coptic, and eventually hundreds of other languages carrying the message of Scripture across continents, cultures, and generations. The process of translating the Bible became part of world history itself. Think about this for a moment, please. The Bible, the Bible was not originally written in English. The Old Testament was written primarily in Hebrew with portions in Aramaic. While the New Testament was written in Greek for centuries, most people could not read those languages, which meant access to scripture was often limited. Many people depended on religious leaders to read and explain the scriptures for them. But some believe God's word should be available to everyone. Men of extraordinary courage, like William Tyndale, were willing to risk imprisonment, persecution, and even death. So ordinary people like you and me could read the Bible in our own language. Tyndale believed that scripture should not be reserved only for scholars, clergy, or the educated elite. He believed it belonged to the hands of everyday people like us. Sadly, his commitment to translating the Bible in English ultimately led to his arrest and execution. His English translation would later influence much of the language found in the King James Bible, leaving a legacy that continues to shape the English speaking world to this day. Ancient discoveries such as the Dead Dead Sea Scrolls dramatically strengthened scholarly and understanding of the biblical preservation. First, discovered by Bedouin Shepherds near Qumran in 1947, including a young shepherd named Muhammad Edib, and later excavated by archaeological archaeological uh teams. Sorry, it's been a rough morning. This is I'm just I'm running, I'm firing on all cylinders and I'm burning both ends of the candle, so I apologize. The Dead Sea scrolls contain portions of Old Testament writings dating back more than two thousand years. These discoveries revealed remarkable consistency between ancient manuscripts and later biblical copies, offering powerful evidence of how carefully many biblical texts had been preserved across generations. The dating of biblical writings did not emerge from a single discovery or one ancient document. Historians and scholars have spent centuries comparing languages, examining manuscripts, studying empires, tracing genealogies, analyzing archaeological discoveries and cross-referencing biblical events with known rulers, kingdoms, wars, and historical records throughout the ancient Near East and Roman world. Throughout this process, scholars gradually constructed historical timelines, placing many biblical writings within identifiable periods of history. The writings of the Old Testament were largely completed around four hundred BC, following the era of the prophets and the return of the Jewish people from Babylonian exile. Then came roughly four centuries, often referred to as the intertestamental period, a time during which no new prophetic writings were added to Scripture. After this period, Jesus Christ emerged in Roman-occupied Judea, ushering in the events recorded in the New Testament. The New Testament was written between approximately AD forty five and AD ninety five, beginning shortly after the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. These writings are traditionally associated with apostles and early followers of Christ, including Matthew, Mark, Luke, John, Paul, Peter, James, Juanito, just kidding, and Jude. Many of whom either witnessed these events directly or carefully recorded the testimony of those who did. The Bible also stands to me as unique because it is not merely one style of writing. Within its pages are historical narratives, poetry, wisdom literature, prophecy, legal codes, songs, letters, genealogies, parables, visions, apocalyptic imagery, and personal testimony. It contains stories of creation and collapse, faith and rebellion, judgment and mercy, exile and redemption. And despite centuries of criticism, skepticism, debate, political attacks, persecution, and attempts to suppress it, the Bible remains one of the most printed, distributed, translated, studied, and influential books ever written. Empires have risen and fallen, philosophies have come and gone, kingdoms collapsed into dust, yet these writings continue to be read across the world every single day. And while debates about authorship, dating and transmission may continue for generations, the deeper reality remains unchanged for many believers. The Holy Bible has served as a source of spiritual guidance, moral foundation, wisdom, correction, hope, repentance, and encouragement, and faith. People have turned to these writings during war, suffering, addiction, loneliness, fear, grief, celebration, worship, and moments of profound personal transformation. For countless people throughout history, the Bible has not merely been a religious text, it has been a cast for the broken, a prescription for the sick, a defibrillator for the spiritually lifeless, a prophylactic against hopelessness, a source of light in the darkness, and for many, a living testimony pointing toward humanity's search for truth, redemption, purpose, and a relationship with uh I was gonna say living God, and that's true, but sometimes familiar words become so familiar that we stop feeling their weight. So let me say it this way: a relationship with the ancient of days, as described in Daniel chapter seven, verse nine, and as we move forward into chapter seven and begin exploring the book of Genesis, I believe this is where the conversation becomes even more profound because Genesis is not simply the beginning of the Bible. In many ways, Genesis represents humanity's attempt to understand existence itself. It is where some of the oldest and most important questions ever asked begin to crystallize. Questions about creation, purpose, morality, suffering, life, death, order, chaos, and the relationship between creation and its creator. For thousands of years, people from different civilizations, cultures, languages, and religious traditions have opened the book of Genesis searching for answers. Some have approached it through faith, others through philosophy, others through skepticism, history, archaeology, or science. Yet, despite the differences in interpretation, humanity continues returning to these same passages generation after generation, and I think that alone, I think that that alone says something remarkable about the power and influence of these uh writings. Personally, I do not believe Genesis should be approached casually, nor do I believe it should become a battlefield where every conversation turns into a fist fight, a shouting match, or a source of division. Too often people arrive ready either to defend every word without question or to dismiss a text without examination. Instead, I believe there is value in slowing down, thinking deeply, asking honest questions, and appreciating the profound influence Genesis has had on the third rock from the sun. Whether someone views Genesis as literal history, sacred symbolism, theological truth, poetic literature, or some combination of these perspectives, there is no denying its influence on the world. The opening chapters of Genesis have shaped religion, philosophy, morality, art, literature, culture, and humanity's understanding of itself for thousands of years. Genesis is often misunderstood as simplistic because it begins with creation. In reality, it confronts some of the some of humanity's deepest questions. God, creation, purpose, morality, suffering, free will, temptation, sin, mortality, judgment, and redemption. These are not these are not ancient questions. They are questions humanity continues to wrestle with today. Even in an age of theoretical physics, quantum computing, neuroscience, and cryptography, people still ask, why are we here? Is there meaning behind existence? Why does evil exist? Why are human beings capable of both compassion and destruction? That is what makes Genesis so fascinating. For Christians, these writings represent divine revelation, yet, regardless of a person's belief, beliefs, Genesis continues to provoke reflection. Some see divine revelation, others see history, symbolism, philosophy, or even fiction. Yet few study Genesis seriously without recognizing its, I would say, extraordinary influence. And while debates about authorship, timeline, symbolism, science, and interpretation will continue long after I return to dust, the Bible remains. It will continue to be read, continue to be studied, continue to be debated, and continue to be cherished throughout the world. For me personally, that matters. When I look at the Bible, I do not merely see an ancient religious document. I see generations preserving these writings through war, exile, persecution, and political unrest because they believed these words carry something sacred and transformative. I see translators risking, risking their lives so ordinary people like you and me could read scripture. I see millions turning to these pages during moments of fear, grief, suffering, repentance, and hope. As we enter chapter seven, my hope is not simply that we memorize facts or debate theories that kick off ministry. My hope is that we approach Genesis with open minds, genuine curiosity, deep respect, and most importantly, wisdom. So that we can appreciate both its historical significance and its spiritual depth. In chapter seven, we arrive at the beginning, the beginning of creation, the beginning of humanity, the beginning of temptation, the beginning of sin, the beginning of judgment, the beginning of covenant, the beginning of redemption, the story that shapes everything that follows, and the beginning of one of the most influential, studied, debated, and enduring books in human history, Genesis.
