DESTINFM SCOREBOARD SHOW

DESTINFM SCOREBOARD SHOW

SPEAKER_00

Welcome to another edition of the Destin FM Scoreboard Show. As we are coming at you live inside the friendly confines of the Destin FM Remote Studios. As always, I'm your host, Rich Canyonis, and let's get right into it. We've got a ton to cover, and we will start with a little flag football. Yes, flag football, which is absolutely huge in our area. Playoffs are underway. Several teams are making noise. Destin earns their first playoff victory. They blanked Bradford 25 to nothing. What a season it's been for the Lady Sharks as well. Should be noted that win was not only the first playoff win for them, but also the first playoff win in the history of Dustin High School since they became a member of the FHAA, which is remarkable. And we highlighted Nilia Stewart last week on the scoreboard show. And this young lady, she's got to get highlighted again, does she not? She's making a case as one of the best athletes come out of our region. It's that simple. Not only was she an all-the-core leader on the girls' basketball squad, but she's again, think about it. They made history because they won their uh their first um district championship in school history. They qualified for the playoffs. Now she's doing it on the gridiron with the flag football squad. And how about this? A four-touchdown performance in the route. She uh threw a couple of um scoring passes to Kaylee Kaiser, Evie uh Gerdovich. Uh, she rushed for two as well. Her performance this season, nothing short of brilliant. And we know it's a team game, no doubt, but this team is stacked. She stood out. Now comes a very tough matchup as they move on to the Sweet 16. They're going to take on Florida High in a rematch of the District Championship Monday in Tallahassee. And Florida High, uh, look, they won the earlier meeting 31 to nothing. They advanced to the regional semis. Um, they also defeated West Nassau 30 to 6. Uh, Florida High has a very solid air attack passing game. They can put up a lot of points. They can run the ball. They played very good defense, tons of passes broken up in the secondary. As I mentioned, they ran all over West Nassau. They got some big plays in the passing game in that big win. They averaged 31 a clip. They rushed for over 160 a game. And I think that's where Destin's going to be tested. The run defense, ability to stop the run, not give up the chunk plays, be fundamentally sound and wrap it up, dragging that flag. You know, defensively, uh, Florida High gets to the quarterback as well. They average close to three sacks a game. So, you know, Destin's going to look uh really for the legs of Stewart, the ability to escape the pocket and then take off and keep that defense honest. I don't believe 20 points are gonna win this game for Destin. I think this might be a wild and wacky high-scoring affair. Um, listen, Destin airs it out right around 180 yards per clip. They have very talented wide receivers that can go up and get it. Uh, this is gonna be a heck of a contest, by the way. Uh, how about this? I feel like we've been congratulating Chocktal for uh several weeks now, right? Again, flag football. What a win! What a performance by their leader, quarterback Darius Morales, right? She throws for six touchdowns. They route it Menendez 39 to nothing. They're into the sweet 16. They will take on Booker T in the semis. That'll be May 4th. As I mentioned, that is an outstanding performance when we talk about 2A F H SAA girls' flag football. She said afterwards, I believe she uh told our good friends over at um uh get the coast, uh, she wasn't 100%. She had a full uh you know battle throat. She had 102 temperature for about a week or so, didn't really practice. That also, according to head coach uh Jim Bay, but she's a trooper. She came out firing, and uh she's a very good player. And I think that's gonna be a heck of a matchup as well against Booker T. You might see a lot of points over the next week or two when we're talking about these flag football district championships, and then obviously these teams with the ambition to move on in the States. All right, softball. So we talked a little bit about Crestview, and they fell just short against the Navarre Raiders 2-0 earlier in the week on Tuesday. Uh, they got shut out. You know, the Bulldogs typically again score. Uh, that was the first time they failed to score since way back in March. Their record dropped to 18-8. Navarre, their win bumped them up to 13-9. Obviously, Crestville doesn't have any more games scheduled right now. Uh, Navarre's gonna challenge Pace. Uh, that game was played late Thursday. We'll give you a wrap-up uh on Monday on the 62nd scoreboard. The Patriots roll into that, looking for their fifth straight victory, by the way. And um, I think uh, you know, you got the uh Raiders. I don't believe they're gonna go down without a fight. Now, as far as Kniceville, they also hit the diamond. They took on Gulf Brees for the District Championship Thursday night as well. We'll give you that recap on Monday. Uh, heck of a season for both squads. As I mentioned, they're battling it out at Hensley Field. So we'll give you a really nice recap on Monday's uh 62nd scoreboard, and we'll also give you a little more of an in-depth recap on next week's scoreboard show as well. But the Eagles dominated Mosley to get to this point, 12-1 to advance to the title game. And as I mentioned, going in, they've been red hot, winners of 11-12. Uh GB upset Milton, 4-1 to advance to this point. So uh, you know, it uh we know most likely it shaped up to be a heck of a contest. Um, all right, top rank pace got the win over Tate, 7-1. And they did what they've been doing all season long. They scored first in a bunch, one in the first, uh, two in the second, then they broke it open with three in the fourth. Tate got a run back in the seventh. Britain uh Catler smacked a solo shot for her tenth homer of the season. That's a career high. She had a total of seven uh prior to this season. Um, Cameron Pierce was also very hot, three of four from the plate. Solo shot as well. Start the game, pitching to the rest. Paced will now take on Navarre Friday for the 6'8 District 1 title, first pitch slater for 6:30 p.m. We will give you a full score update on Monday's scoreboard as well. Uh, and then think about this, right? So Pace 21 and 4. They've already beaten Navarre twice this season. They opened up the 2026 campaign. They beat him 10-3. Less than a week ago, they defeated him again against 15-4. Now their offense is relentless at the plate. So, you know, again, it's all about jumping on pitching. They jumped on the Raiders pitching five in the first, two in the second, and they broke it open and what a monster third inning when they batted around and scored seven runs in route to an easy win. If the Raiders have any shot, they got to get out of the first couple round, uh, first couple innings, pardon me, unscathed. They cannot fall behind 3-0, 4-0, 5-1 after two or three innings. If they do, they're gonna get blown out. And they don't have the offense to match pace, which has scored 25 runs in two contests against them. So, uh, you know, pitching wins championships. We know that, right? And offensively, they're gonna have to be patient at the plate and try to manufacture some runs, right? You know, scratch out, move runners over accordingly. Uh, so we'll go from softball to baseball. Talk to all the Indians. Why not? They take on, uh, by the way, we also they'll take on St. Augustine Friday in the regional summies. But speaking of the Indians, we had their head football coach, Frank Beasley, on last week. That's on demand right now. Check it out. Uh, just a click away as well if you missed that interview. Indians will host his 4-A region affair. First pitch is going to be a four for Walton Beach. Um, we also want to make an announcement that they have a new baseball head coach, uh, Sean Snyder, was announced earlier in the week. And his track record, everywhere he has gone, uh, he has won. He's got close to 30 years head coaching experience. He's won close to 500 games. He's had a couple of World Series, college World Series experience, right? Uh, he was with the Oklahoma regional baseball um uh squad. He was uh, I should say, Oklahoma Regional Baseball Coach of the Year during his career. He was a quarterback back in the day in Tulane, I believe it was 1991. Uh, then you know, continued that career at the University of Oklahoma. He was a pitcher. Uh, he played on that Oklahoma 94 College World Series national championship team, also in the 95 College World Series. So, you know, you're talking about a gentleman that has close to 30 years experience, also is an assistant uh football coach. I mean, look, they it that is a great, great hire. So we wanted to make a point to mention that Sean Snyder is the new uh head uh baseball coach at Fort Walton Beach High School. And listen, you know, they they had a you know uh an okay season, right? I mean, it's it's let's just call it for what it is. You know, um they uh had a couple wins here and there, they had a couple losses. I mean, it's not the season they won it because they only won eight games, so you know you can't be too hard on kids, and they started the season one and four, and then they got a win against Booker T, and then they dropped two straight after that. So they were staring down the barrel of two and six, so eight games in, but after a long slide, they were able to pick up a couple W's here and there, and they close their season out with a 9-1 win over Edmondson County and then Carroll County 20 to nothing. They lost to the Indians six to four, but they did close out the season. You always got to take the positive winning two out of three, three out of four. Something to build upon. So eight and eighteen, I get it, not the most uh glamorous of records, but remember now they're bringing in a head coach that has a substantial amount of experience. Um, and speaking of success going far, right? How about this? Congrats, Northwest Florida. They earn an FCSAA tournament bid. They will take on number two Central Florida. That's a best of three opening round beginning on Friday. And this will be the fourth consecutive appearance by Northwest Florida. They're looking to uh get back to the championship round for the first time. They won the title back in 2024. Uh, they have hosted regional round matchups in each of their past three seasons. We we talk a lot about them when we're doing our updates during the week. They have pitching and they have hitting. I mean, they they are a dangerous, dangerous team. They really are. And I'll tell you what, they're they're coming into this one hot, right? Because now they're riding a six-game winning streak, two victories over top seed at uh GC Gulf Coast State College. Um, Central Florida, strong campaign. They won the Citrus Conference 23 to 10, kind of ran away with it. Uh their record was outstanding, 33-19 overall. These two teams, these two programs last met back in 2023 in the championship game, Central Florida won 7-2 on its way to a national title run in Grand Junction. So you got game one of the series set for Friday, 12, with game two scheduled for Saturday at 1. And you got, if necessary, game three will be played Sunday. Uh, time to be determined. I would just tell you guys, follow the college either on social media or uh you can go right on their athletic uh website. And remember, this year's championship round will go back to George M. Steinbrenner Field, of course, um uh longtime owner of the New York Yankees, who has since passed, but that'll be in Tampa from May 8th to the 11th. Tournament champion will advance to the NJCAA World Series in Grand Junction. Sticking with baseball. And I know you guys love when I give these updates during the week, but the Wahoo is continue their five-game set against Biloxi on Friday. Major league now. Uh, look, it hasn't been the best of runs for the Tampa Bay Rays and or the Florida Marlins to start. But again, we know the baseball season is a very, very long season. And right now, Tampa Bay is a game and a half back of the Yankees. They're 18-12 in the AL East. And then you look at the NL East, and the Marlins are a surprise, right? They're 15-16, even though they're 6.5 uh back against Atlanta. Washington struggled. The five, um, the Philadelphia Phillies have been a bad baseball team. Granted, they won two straight, but prior to that, they fired their manager, Rob Thompson, after a 9-19 start, interim head to coach or interim skipper, Don Mattonly, right? And the Mets are 10-21. They're 11.5 buried. So these teams are already buried. The Marlins are not buried yet, even though six and a half, it's not insurmountable, but you want to stay within striking distance, July, and then we'll see which teams are gonna be buyers and sellers with the trade deadline right around the corner. The Mets might make a move too. You have no idea what they're gonna do with Mendoza because if they continue to struggle like this, then guess what? All bets are off, and sometimes you just gotta make that decision. You really do. Um, I also wanted to get into a little bit of uh some college news going on because I know you know we we we throw in during the uh 60 second scoreboard updates that you hear uh Tuesdays and Thursdays, which, oh, by the way, mark it on the calendar. Starting this Monday, you'll be able to get the 60 second Destin FM 60 second scoreboard Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday. So you gotta wake up in the morning uh with our good friends, Billy Surf Surfs Up in the Morning, and you'll be able to hear my updates. Now to be five, uh five days during the week, Monday to Friday. And then we always like to tell you if there's any type of breaking news that happens, we'll pop on for five, 10 minutes and we'll throw up a quick pod of the scoreboard show. Uh, but you guys have been fantastic with the downloads and the feedback. And I know a couple guys asked on X where you can follow me at RichQ on Q. Uh, I feel like, you know, uh you guys are uh my my my family right now when you guys are um uh tweeting at me, right? You want some SEC news. Well, a couple things. SEC dominated the headlines when we're talking about the draft, right? 87 players selected in the NFL draft, 20 straight years leading the league. Uh Texas AM, right, had a bunch of players. Um SEC with this record right now, they're showing you that uh they're always the big boys, whether we're talking about, you know, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, uh, what I think is interesting, right? For Alabama, faithful out there, uh, new Alabama commit five-star 2027 quarterback Elijah Haven picks the Crimson tide over Georgia. That's big news. And then Texas AM landed a five-star 2027 offensive tackle by the name of Kennedy Brown. Um, also, too, Greg Sankey, the SEC commissioner, basically said on the Paul Feinbaum show that the SEC championship game remains vital despite expansion, saying calls to remove it need to tone it, quote, down. And then uh the other news to come out with the tide, former Alabama wide receiver Jameson Williams is suing the NCAA and SEC over NIL compensation. That according to Fox Sports, uh, we will talk a little more about that next weekend. That's that is huge because that can actually change also the landscape of how some of these players are not only being viewed but compensated. So this is a it's a big story. It really is. Now I don't know again if uh you know it's uh it's a credible lawsuit, but we'll have to see how it plays out. And oh, by the way, SEC stacked up USA Today, uh, where your rankings are, again, phenomenal job. So I know it's very, very early, even though we're creeping in to May, but just to kind of give you an idea, three SEC teams ranked in the top 10, seven in the top 20. Um, and again, I know it's subjective. Georgia sitting there at number four, Texas AM number nine, Alabama sits there at number 12. So again, you're talking about a head coach that's gonna have a first-year starter for the second season in a row. Uh, we know Alabama's issues went beyond the quarterback last season. They couldn't block. So if they're gonna improve up front, they will be a threat in the SEC. Ole Miss sitting there at 13, LSU at 16. But again, these are all subjective rankings, is really what I want to tell you guys. And we'll get more into college football. Auburn, you know, listen, they they they're they're gonna struggle. They're gonna struggle. And um uh, you know, listen, I know that's a very tough conference, but they're gonna struggle, right? I mean, I everyone's talking about the hiring of Alex Golish. He had success in an OC at Tennessee, put together a nice run with USF. Uh now, if Byron Brown can find the same success he had last year with the Bulls, then the Tigers can get that five or six wins and maybe be ball eligible. But we will see. We will see. So, as I mentioned, another unbelievable week high school sports-wise. Um, these kids are doing a phenomenal, fantastic job. You got flag football playoffs, you got baseball playoffs, um, you got uh softball playoffs. You know, we also talked some tennis last week. Did we not? I mean, you're seeing some historic runs uh when we kind of run through the gamut, whether it's Choctaw, Crestview, Niceville, Destin, Fort Walton, South Walton, Walton. Uh, these schools are doing an absolutely phenomenal, phenomenal, phenomenal job. And I know I was giving the shout-out last week to the uh Lady Vikes, right? Clinch in the regional championship. They had that four uh four-nothing win over East Side, return trip to the state title. Phenomenal job. So, you know, we always like to preface the show by saying uh there is so much talent in our backyard. There is a substantial amount of talent, and we want to shine a light and give a lot more exposure to these athletes, these high school athletes. And again, the athletes, the coaches, the coaching staff, the schools, the ADs, the admin, the community. That's kind of the reason we're doing what we're doing, right? And hopefully you guys are enjoying it. You're being um uh entertained, we're dropping a little uh knowledge here and there. Next weekend, we will get into a little more baseball. I want to focus a little more too on the wahoos because they've kind of had an up and down start to their season. We'll tap into the Bucks, the Marlins. Uh, yes, we will get into a little more NFL pack end of the show. 95% of the show, we are hyperlocal. So we are banging out everything going on in the high schools in our community, you know. And since I already kind of gave you the the Q shout out, I, you know, I don't want to play favorites here, right? I don't want to play favorites. I mean, we gave it to Stewart now. What is this, two weeks in a row? But you know, if we have to throw a um, you know, a a uh what can we say, honorable mention. And I think, you know what, we'll do that because it is, it's our show. So we can kind of honorable mention, you know what? Let's go to um Darius Morales, right? Throwing the six touchdowns with the flu, basically. I mean, that's uh Jordan-esque. So this young lady gets the uh also gets the Q shot out uh in that 39 to nothing route over uh Menendez as uh Chuck Tall goes into the sweet 16. Uh, I will tell you, we are gonna line up a couple athletic directors over the next couple weeks. We are going to line up a couple uh head coaches to join us as well. But what we need or what we would ask is that you guys check out destinfm.com, check out the on-demand, you can download the free Destin FM app. If you click on on demand, you can see all the past um Destin FM scoreboard shows.
