Sports fans into another edition of the Destin FM Scorpion Show. As always, I'm your host, Rich Cunonez. First and foremost, we always appreciate you guys getting connected with us, tuning in, downloading the show, uh, obviously connecting with us on social media, myself at Rich Q on Q on X and IG, TikTok, Rich Q on the Mic. A little light on the high school front, and that's to be expected with uh all the graduations and obviously a lot of the student athletes now prepping for the summertime, maybe getting in some extra work in the gym, around the track, on the field, on the court, on the hardwood, what have you. And then getting said to go to college. And we saw an extremely successful run in our backyard with the local high school sports teams. I mean, it was phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. Uh, it didn't matter what region didn't matter if it was Pressview, Nice View, you know, Choctaw, South Walton, North Walton, Walton, Destin. Uh, everyone had a wonderful run in spring sports, a lot of playoff appearances, state championship appearances, wins as well. Uh so first and foremost, as we like to say, congratulations to the communities, the high schools, the student athletes, the coaches, and all involved. And as I said, as we kind of get into the dog days of summer, what we'll really do is kind of preview the fall sports season, believe it or not. And it's going to be right around the corner. It really is when you're thinking about it. Uh, we'll dive into uh, I guess you can say some power rankings, cues power rankings on the show, especially with high school football. But I wanted to get into uh a couple little areas today, while we have a moment or two. And you know, the one thing that kind of stood out, if you've guys been following it, we we talk about the the portal, the transfer portal. We talk about how some of these kids are being uh recruited and and what's being used to recruit the kids. And there have been some stories that have come out over the last month or so. And if you're a parent, if you're a coach, if you're an A D, you gotta be careful, you gotta be careful. So this just came down earlier in the week. The Florida High School Athletic Association, FH SAA, suspended a high school, uh high school as director of college recruiting, multiple violations, according to a report. Now, this is according to the Tallahassee Democratic Report. This is now in Tallahassee. Lincoln's director of college recruiting, Jaquori Dixon, suspended for the first six games of the 2026 high school football season due to two rule violations. Uh, Lincoln Athletic Director Joseph Velez confirmed to Democrat that the school plans to appeal the FHSAA's decision. There is a message from Dixon who posted on social media, and I want to read it to you, and this is from Yahoo Sports. Quote, I'm suspended because I took one kid on a college visit, gave another kid tweet after his grandmother passed away. Although he played for my seven-on-seven, they both announced they were Lincoln Trojan football athletes in December prior to any of this. But somehow I still got suspended. I know he reported me. Hate never outweighs genuine love. I'm not even mad about the suspension. I'm more disappointed to constantly face criticism and attacks. When the bigger picture should be all of us working together to uplift and protect these kids. How can you report something that's helping a kid better their life? I'm going to keep uh helping kids get opportunities, keep helping families, and keep standing on what I believe in. I'm dedicating my time, energy, and resources to helping these young men stay focused, stay out of the streets, chase opportunities bigger than their environment, which is all well and good. And you appreciate Dixon's transparency, but he is poking the bear a little bit because by saying you're going to continue to do it, and already you've got now two violations pegged against you, okay? And if you go and you read the bylaw 6.3.2 in its entirety, then yeah, these are violations. Now, I I totally appreciate the fact that this man wants to help kids, but this is a PSE now to some of these high schools, these athletic directors, you know, even some of these parents out there of student athletes, you've got to be careful. You know, as much as you want to accept certain things or give a helping hand or extend that olive branch, you know, that hand up, hand out. You got to be really careful because these state, uh, these athletic associations in all these states, especially in Florida, they are cracking down. Now, the Trojans ended the past season six and five record. They finished, I think, number 55 in the final high school football uh ranking. But that's that's besides the point. That's besides the point. Because, again, it's I don't want to say it's running rampant, but then you also have the story, I believe it was a couple weeks ago or a couple of months ago, pardon me, with one of the other high school football coaches, Victor uh Cavallo uh the third. He was under investigation for allegedly taking seven grand from a player for NIL deal negotiations. He was acting as an unlicensed agent. This, according to schools, they found multiple violations. FHSAA now reviewing sanctions possible as they should. High school sports is so different than when I was growing up. It was so different 15, 20, 25, 30 years ago. It really was. AAU, inner city, basketball, yeah, they would be uh stuck in cash in bags for these kids, sneakers, jerseys, you know, drive them around, chauffeur them around a little bit in the limos and the Mercedes, and everyone in the cities and the boroughs knew it, whether it's Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, right? They all knew it. The Bronx. And New York was it was prominent, it was runner rampant because everyone wanted their hand in the cookie jar. But when you start to dive into the NIL and you are not a certified indoor licensed agent, and there's a conflict of interest, first of all, if you are a high school coach, you should not be negotiating anything for a kid. You shouldn't. That's a red flag. I'm staring clear of that. That's shadiness, that's taking advantage of a kid and working the system to your advantage, i.e., in this case, allegedly seven grand. But we've opened up Pandora's box when we started to get into the NIO deal, name image, and likeness with high school athletes, right? And if you're not familiar in high school sports, NIL, just as I mentioned, stands for name, image, and likeness, and it refers to a certain athlete's legal right to profit off of their personal brand. Like I have a brand, Rich Canyonis, right? My my own Q. Rich can Q, my own Q. That's that's my brand. Like, I'm not gonna allow someone to profit off of it. And I've been doing this for 25 plus years in media, sports broadcasting. I'm a little more seasoned than an 18-year-old kid, a lot more seasoned, and these kids get taken advantage of. And this also allows the high schools to earn money through endorsement deals, social media sponsorships, merchandise, autograph paid appearances. It it and they still maintain their eligibility. I mean, again, back in the day, you weren't allowed to take anything, even for college uh books. And now you've got a lot of states permitting high school athletes to sign these deals without losing their amateur status or high school eligibility. Hey, you know what? Let the kid make a couple bucks, right? Let them grow into that business acumen, but make sure you keep an eye out for them. There are also states that pretty much strictly forbid high schoolers from profiting off their athletic pay. Okay, that's fine. You know, you're gonna get a full ride, and that takes care of your uh tuition, which is great. And there are some states that allow NIL, but you gotta kind of navigate these guidelines, which are at times, you know, you gotta cover that too, right? No pay for play, school affiliation, school property. That's the other thing. So there's a fine line to walk. There really is, and now these kids are most likely on what social media X, Instagram, TikTok. And they're figuring out ways to make money to host camps, clinics, right? And I know in our backyard, we have some players at Blay to Florida that are gonna come back and host camps, which is good. You're giving back to the community for kids. But you just gotta do it on the up and up. You have to. You have to do it on the up and up. And out of if you look, it's only prohibited, it's not allowed in four states, but every other state confirmed, right? Um now I know I believe Texas confirmed per minute 11 years uh or older. And and this is kind of where it drastically changed when you started to talk about these endorsements. And Quentin Ewers skipped his senior season at Carol Senior High School in Texas to join Ohio State. He basically secured at one point at the time, 1.4 million NIL deal shortly after enrolling. So look, they they the states know this, the high schools know this, um, the kids know this. Like in Florida, it's permitted, right? Permit it, uh, if unaffiliated with team schools or the FHSAA. Permit it. So these kids, you know, if they have the right people in their corner, they're not gonna get taken advantage of. But like I said, some of these coaches, unlicensed agent, that's a no-no. And this other uh gentleman, this other coach, Corey Dixon, he's gonna get suspended. And I can appreciate the rhyme or reason behind it, but you also have to watch out, poking the bear. So I mentioned we'll talk a lot more about this high school sports-wise, over the next several weeks. And as I promise you, we've got some coaches coming on uh the show. We'll tap into that. Uh, I wanted to, if you listen to the uh Dustin FM 62nd scoreboard during the week, we've been talking a lot about what's going on with the SEC. And now there's a you know, there's a thought in the SEC actually governed itself. College sports, kind of dire straits. Uh obviously the SEC had meetings in our backyard in Destin with their commissioner, talking about expansion, talking about, you know, uh getting rid of the uh week schedule. So it's it's it's gonna be fascinating to watch. It is. It really is. Like I think there's something drastic coming. Now, there's no vote on a future government model, no decision on a long discussed split from the NCAA or creation of their own rules and enforcement. Speaking of the SEC, but I do find it interesting when you listen to uh their chancellor, chair of the league's president board, uh Samson Hilton. And as I mentioned, they were just down their Miramar Beach, Backyard and Destin SEC Annual Spring Administration meetings. And I think you might see some drastic changes. I mean, this is the first time since 2003 the league topped off spring meetings without a business session, and that's where school chancellors, uh school chancellors, pardon me, president, will adopt or not bylaw changes. And I think that's an indication that the conference is possibly on its way to something uh bigger this summer. Uh their commissioner Greg Sankey has kind of been tight-lift, you know, subtle suggestions, you know, quote stay tuned. We call that a teaser in the business. But I also know that they want to get rid of some of the couples scheduling. They don't like some of the start times of their games on the SCCN networks. I think that they're going to go on their own way. Uh, that can be huge. I mean, if the SEC is planning to go its own way, you know, maybe not at the moment for competition, but we're making impossible enforcement too, then I got news for you. That's that's really not a threat to the NCLWA and college athletics and college football and college sports. They're basically saying, you know, we're going to do what's best for um our conference. That's exactly what they're thinking. And this is what I pointed out uh during the week on the uh Destiny FM62nd scoreboard with our updates Monday to Friday that you catch uh multiple times during the morning and tune in to our good friend uh Billy Surf surf in the morning. It's something that I uh I talk about multiple, multiple times. You know, this is the other thing. The ADs have been vocally frustrated with the early season kickoff times, okay? And they also have to figure out you know, are we really the strongest conference out there? Like the SEC is out of it, they'll defend themselves when it comes to being the strongest conference in college football, but they've had struggles against the Big Ten. And that's a problem. Because if you're defeating them, you're playing competitive football, you're gonna get better start time, you're gonna get that 3:30 start, 7 o'clock start, not 1230, 12 o'clock noon. They don't want that. They want the eyeballs, that's what they want, which opens up what revenue, advertising, markability, branding. So that's something that we will certainly monitor and watch going forward. All right, minor league baseball. Uh, our guys, the while who's how about this? They set a ridiculous record the other night, scoring 23 runs uh in Rickwood in a historic one-slot. I mean, I don't know if you guys caught the game on the stream or on the radio, playing for the first time. Rickwood Field is historic, it's one of the oldest home parks in America. The Oahu scored 23 runs against the Barons. They won 23-4, playing as the Negro League's Pensible Seagulls. Um, they had their most hits ever, 26 home runs seven, run score 23. I mean, that's crazy. So you score 23, and you're feeling pretty good about the offense, right? Because I don't care what level you're at. You score 23 runs, you've got to be doing something right, as I like to say. But then they come back and then they lose seven to four. I mean, prior to that, they dropped two out of three, three out of four, four out of six, right? If you talk about that Columbus series, their offense is such an enigma. Now they close it out Friday night, and we'll have this to airtime on demand, 7 p.m. They got Saturday and Sunday against Birmingham. That closes out the month of May, and they're hovering as a 500 team right now. So now you get to June. And their schedule is not easy. It's not. They got six at home against Chattanooga, Chattanooga, obviously, always the Mondays off. They hit the road back for six against Columbus, back at home against Birmingham the 16th to the 21st. And we already know Birmingham's been a thorn in their side. So they they just got to figure out, they they got to get a little more rhyme or reason to their offense, and they have to get a little more run support. Now 23 runs, I get it, it's a different animal. But they have been very skittish. Remember two, they came out of the gate, they jumped out of gate 0 and 5. And then they were 1 and 6. Then they won two straight and they lost three straight. And that's going all the way back to April. So now, as we close in on May, had a good start. They won three straight against Biloxi, but then they lost three straight against Rocket City. Then they come back and they went three out of four. Then they drop one, and they went for it's just a skittish team. They're very skittish. So they'll be tested Friday, Saturday, Sunday. That's years against Chattanooga. That'll be a big one. Then back on the road against Columbus, that'll be a big one. You got a couple um uh early start times too. Got a couple 6.06 p.m., uh 5.05, 12.05. All right, uh, NBA, and then we'll close out with a little NFL. NBA, game seven, it's on the dock in San Antonio and OKC. I guess this is what happens when you complain to referees. You get some of these favorite calls, and here we go. Uh, so you got game seven and Western Conference Finals, and that was because the uh Spurs routed the Thunder Thursday night in game six, 118-91. Wemby with 28. Uh, as far as SGA and the Thunder, kind of a quiet game for SGA. He only got to the line three times. Everyone's been talking about the flipping, the flopping, the officiating in the NBA, but nonetheless, a 27-point throttle by the Spurs. And now you got a game seven, and still my New York Knicks await the winner. Now, the Knicks did get some uh dicing news, and uh it's you know, not the best news because it's it's an injury, and that's Mitchell Robinson, uh had surgery on his pinky. He's gonna play, obviously, in the NBA finals. A very good player. If you go back to that game four against the Cavs, hold in his right hand, went down on the floor with about five and changed left in the third quarter. Uh so no matter if the Knicks play the Thunder, they're gonna be underdogs. If the Spurs beat the Thunder in seven games, I think that favors the Knicks. I think that's a better matchup for the Knicks, and I think they'll be a slight favorite in that one. All right, baseball quickly before we get out of here. Full docket on Friday. Braves against the Reds. Uh, you've got the uh Rays against the Angels. They're hosting the Marlins on the road against the Mets. You know, we talk about teams, uh, they're playing really good baseball, and that was the Rays last week. We were waxing poetic about them when they won three straight against Baltimore, and then they dropped two or three to the Yankees. Uh well, actually one of three because one of the games was postponed. But then they come back and they get swept in three against Baltimore, and now they're only trailing, or they're leading the Yankees, I should say, by a game and a half in the East. Uh, Miami, you just can't figure them out. You really can't. You know, Miami Marlins have young talent. Don't get me wrong. They got young talent. They're not as bad as the Mets right now, but everyone's chasing the Braves. The Braves are uh eight and a half up on the Phillies, and you got to wonder once we creep into late June, early July, which teams are gonna be buyers, which teams are going to be sellers. So the teams in our backyard, Miami, Tampa, even Atlanta. Um, listen, Miami's struggling. Tampa will figure it out. Atlanta's playing really good baseball. And then lastly, uh to the NFL, uh, you uh listened in during the week on the updates, the issue with Josh Jacobs, with the uh Green Bay Packers and being arrested. Everyone was in an uproar with Jackson Dart, haven't had a team meeting after introducing OTUS and Duel Carter. And I talked a lot about that on my shoe, my show on Q, which you guys can get on the YouTube channel as well, just uh Google at Rich Cunes. I think it's much to do about nothing. Um, and we're still waiting to see what's gonna happen with Philadelphia wide receiver AJ Brown, because right now it does not appear he's going to get moved or traded to New England, uh, as a lot of people thought he was going to get moved and traded pretty fast. And right now, there's kind of a uh divide, right? And June 1st is a significant date for the NFL and a potential AJ Brown trade. And there's a reason for that. AJ Brown's been the subject of trade speculation throughout the uh offseason. Wasn't present at Eagles OTAs this week. Uh Jalen Hurts talked a little bit about it, I think kind of understands that they might be moving on, but at the end of the day, why does June 1st matter, you ask? Okay. Every dollar that a team's paying to a player has got to be accounted for for the salary tax. So in the NFL, teams can manipulate how and when they account for this money. June 1st deadline is one of those mechanisms. So let's take the case of AJ Brown and the Eagles. It applies specifically to how teams manage cash. Chargers. So if you want to you know gloss over it, so if we're going an example, if a player signs a five-year contract, 20 million signing bonus, the team basically accounts for 4 million in signing bonus in each season of the contract, right? I gotta do my liberal arts or college of uh Pennsylvania, you know, Radio Station 88.1, go Spartans, go math. Four times five, decades 20. A team will move on from a player before the contract has been completed, each team added. But then you have to worry about the cap. So there's a signing bonus, money's been paid to the player, not accounted for the cap. You stick with that example. If the team cuts the player three seasons into that five-year contract, there's to innovate money and signing bonuses unaccounted for. Four million in each of the last two seasons, each, even though the team has moved on from the player, the money paid to the player must hit the cap. And that's what we call dead money. Teams don't like having any type of dead money. And what qualifies post-June 1st transaction releases and crazy, they're handled much differently. Another example, Kirk Cousins, right? So we saw multiple post-June 1st designations this offseason. And a Falcons got rid of Kirk Cousins, Dolphins got rid of my guy Tua Tua Tua. The league added this rule in 2006, I believe. So it's something that we're affairs worth watching if you are a pass fan and an Eagles fan, too. All right, don't forget as we start to wrap it up, you gotta follow our good friends on social media. You gotta follow the stage on social media. It's it's an easy thing. It is an easy thing to do. We like to say we are just a click away. That's it. Which is a click play. Uh, as well as our uh power rankings, that's always going to be fun. Um, also, I know that Talk Tall is still looking for a head uh cross uh county coach. I believe that's still up there posted. If you got experience, uh you're looking for employment, you want to get back into high school sports, uh, go for it, go for it, go for it, go for it. And then um also, too, there are um, you know, like for instance, they'll post uh Chocolate, which has really been great, had eight district champs, six regional champs, 22 individual champs, seven individual regional champs, two final four appearances, three Elite Eight appearances. Like this is kind of what we're talking about. Destin, what a great run, you know, the flag football, a nice bill for Walton, the softball, nice. I mean, all these high schools are just doing a fantastic job in the area. They really are with high school sports. And it's great to see the turnout, it's great to see the support, the athletes of the week, you know, everyone going for the ride and uh being there sending off these kids, whether it's flag football, whether it's softball, whether it's baseball, some of the great runs, the communities involved. And that's the reason that not only do we do our 60-second uh uh desktop 60 second scoreboard updates, but also the long form show, the scoreboard show. So we're gonna have some coaches come on. I'm gonna try to track down some ADs, we're gonna try to get some athletes as well. Uh, we'll do a little more college SBC minor leagues. We're working on that. We got some beat writers that cover minor league baseball. They're gonna pop on as well for a couple minutes. So we got a lot of content we want to distribute out there.
