And we welcome you into another edition of the Destin FM scoreboard show. As always, I am your host, Rich Canonas, and hope everyone had a good sports week. A lot to get into. Again, kind of light on what's going on locally, but we'll get you caught up to speed. Myself, Rich Q on Q on IGNX and on TikTok Rich Q on the mic. So, as I mentioned, um, you know, nationally, get through the NBA Finals, get through the Stanley Cup Finals, great series, respectively. You got the college baseball world series that's in play on Saturday. We'll get into that little SEC football news and notes. But we always like to kind of bring it back locally, and we'll start with some area high school baseball news. Crestview announced they have a new head coach. Corey McSween was hired earlier in the week, bringing 15 years of high school baseball coaching experience, six years as a head coach, very strong background in education, athletics, student development, has strong ties within the community, always a positive. And there were a couple quotes I want to get into. He actually served as teacher, football coach, and head softball coach at Crestview, assistant baseball coach during his time at Walker Elementary. And I think this is a good hire, especially when you look at a team that uh young team last year. They had some, you know, a little bit of adversity, if you will, during the course of a baseball season. Sometimes the pitching went south, sometimes they didn't get the run support that was certainly needed. They finished 11-15, just two and four in district play. Uh, we're not a very good road team, three and seven, eight and seven at home. And interesting enough, if you go back to last season's uh team for the Bulldogs, they started off four and oh, five and one, came back down to earth with their first loss on the road against West Florida, where they were shut out 10-0. Then they dropped three or four, and then you know, self-doubt starts to creep in, lost to um uh Choctaw, Navarre, Milton, Pace, uh, Niceville. So those are the teams you got to beat. That's the standard. That's the standard when you're looking to take it to a uh different level. And I think this is a good hire. Um, I think you're bringing in guys that have a good track record, head coaching experience is a key. It really is on any level. Like if you can come in and you have familiarity with the organization, you have familiarity with the high school, the community, uh the alumni, the boosters, uh, you know, again, you go out in the community, you're getting sponsorship, you're getting businesses to support the local product, and the fact that you have a gentleman that played at that high school, had a long and distinguished coaching career, it just always makes sense those types of hires. And sometimes people will sit there and say, Yeah, it puts a little more pressure on you. I don't think that's really the case. I think sometimes that pressure, if you invite it, if you grab onto it, uh, that's the best thing in the world, to be quite honest. Um, and I think you have to sometimes, because if you can come in as a former player and you can win with that high school, then you know you're you're gonna have you're gonna be set for life in that area. I mean, obviously, uh we see it on so many different levels, whether it's Juco College or not. But I know that uh coach is really excited to be part of the program. We're gonna try to um grab him on for a couple moments. And like I said, former player, longtime assistant. So uh he had stops at Vernon, Laurel Hill. And let me just um quote this is from an article from Get the Coast. Quote, I'm really excited for the opportunity. McSween said, I played for Coach Gillis. I've known him for a really long time. He's helped me out a lot in my career, and having the opportunity to come in and continue what he's built is a real honor. So you go back 2017 is when he started. He replaces Gillis, obviously. Former coach and boss served as the uh Bulldog skipper for a quarter of a century and then wound up stepping down in April. So, like I said, that that's a really nice hire uh for Crestview. I'm excited to see what they do. I'm excited for all these four uh fault sports, which is uh right around the corner. Uh, let me just also let you know Crestview Middle School Girls Volleyball Camp starts July 15th and the 16th, 1 to 3:30 p.m. If you follow uh Crestview News Bulletin Sports, or if you just check out uh Baker High School on um Facebook, they'll give you all the uh information, the Lady Gator Volleyball. So that's actually going to be for the Baker School. I stand corrected. That's gonna be for the Baker School, Baker High School Lady Gator Volleyball. Uh they, of course, the 2023 class 1A girls volleyball state champs a couple seasons ago. So definitely I'll lock in with that. A lot of scrimm, scrimmages, spring scrimmages going on, uh, a lot of middle and high school uh summer ball for basketball uh in pace, Milton. We'll talk a little more about that um next week. Also, um South uh what was it? Uh uh Soundside High School, I believe, uh really playing well. I mean, these kids playing basketball, they defeat home city, pace, Washington, and Gulf Shore. So these kids are putting in the time in the gym. Uh, and I, you know, that's pretty interesting because I know they're in Gulf Breeze, not really in our backyard, so to speak, but you want to just always give the shout out and the love to those that are certainly uh exceeding uh expectations, putting together good products and content on the floor, and then these guys are absolutely doing it. Uh so congrats to the uh little uh hurricanes over there uh getting the job done. This is when, this is when you really cut your bones in the summertime. Kids are in the weight room, they're trying to put on a little muscle. You always see that spurt, 16, 17, 18 years old, and boom, you come in. Maybe you're 15, 20 pounds heavier, uh, maybe you're just um, you know, you're faster, you're stronger. This is the time over the next several months to prepare yourself for fall uh and the winter sports season. So, as far as uh little more in our backyard with the minor league baseball, you hear all the Wahoo updates uh during the week. And listen, they, you know, it's been hit or miss. It's been absolutely hit or miss for the Wahoos. Despite Thursday's game, it was initially suspended top in the ninth inning. The plan was to play the final inning on Friday. Uh, that's not gonna be the case. A wild high-scoring game. Uh, in the end, it's the Barons winning this one 16-13. The loss pretty much drops the Wahoos to 533-33 on the season. They're a full game back of the South Division leading Baloxi uh Shuckers with three games left to play. So, you know how the season's broken down. They got to get things going right now. Uh, this game was completed. There was no resumption at 5.05 p.m. Instead, the originally scheduled game is going to play it at the really originally scheduled time. First pitch slated for 6.05 at Blue Wahoo Stadium. The gates are gonna open at 5. And also, too, we know they do these wonderful promotions. First thousand fans receiving a blah, a blue Wahoo straw hat giveaway presented by Woodlands medical specialists. But they've had a tough little go. I mean, you know, they're kind of feast or famine. They get a couple wins against Columbus and then they drop a couple games. Now, they won four of six overall on the road in that series, but you just can't figure them out when it comes to the offense. One day they can score four and they get pitching support and win four-nothing like they did on the 13th, or they turn around and they lose six to three and the bats go south. So they have a huge, huge, as I mentioned, huge series coming up after this weekend, the three left against Birmingham. Monday, the customary day off in the minors, we know that. And then they travel right to Chattanooga for six beginning the 23rd. All right, SEC. So we know in our backyard we got a ton of SEC football fans. And what has been going on over the last several days? They're talking about the nine-game mandate moving away from the traditional eight-game setup. 2026 season will mark the first time all. 16 SEC schools will play a nine-game conference schedule. Teams will keep three annual rivals rotate through the remaining conference opponents while maintaining a single standings, non-division structure as far as the broadcast networks. We know that the mothership ESPN, SEC network finalized the remaining kickoff time windows. So you get early afternoon night or flex. And this is for the entire 2026 calendar, which basically will give you the fan a little more clarity on the game times earlier in the summer than in past cycles. And I understand why some of these teams don't want that 12 o'clock window. They want 3:30 ABC, here we go, or prime time during the night, and rightfully so. And they also eliminated the cupcake weekend. And I've been an advocate for this for years that you just gotta get rid of these the cupcakes, not the ones that are tasty that we like to have if we have a sweet tooth, but more or less teams that are pushovers, that don't stand a chance, that just take money from the university to play the game. These are non-conference matchups. So you're gonna see an overhaul in 2027. They have to eliminate that. They really do. Because nobody wants to see these teams, you know, uh win by 53 and then they pad their record late with a better opportunity for rankings again into the BCS. Now, according to Yahoo, these are very early sports projections, SEC-wise. Georgia, Texas, they will be that tier one frontrunner to reach the SEC championship game, which will be played December 5th in Atlanta. And you talk about the strength of schedule, the formulas rank Missouri as having the toughest 2026 path, Alabama sits mathematically with the easiest conference lineup, and then everyone's gonna be looking at Texas. Everyone, you know, the march for Arch, everyone is gonna be looking at Texas and Arch Manning, and and how will he respond? Like, what do we expect from Arch Manning this season? Because a lot of people believe he's the front runner to win the Heisman. Now, stranger things have happened in college football. You and I we both know that. But how about this? It is almost July, and the season begins August 29th. You got North Carolina against TCU, NC State against Virginia, you have Memphis against UNLV, and then September 3rd, uh USF, Bethune Cookman. You've got uh what do we got? Colorado, Deion Sanders, Coach Prime against Georgia Tech, and then Friday, September 4th, uh you've got a slate of games, Miami against Stanford, Fresno State, USC, and then obviously Saturday, that is kind of like your kickoff, if you will, September 5th. That is when we will get the boatload of the bid, uh, the big dog, uh the big dogs. Uh but just looking at Texas, they're certainly a team to watch. They really are because ultimately it comes down to who's going to be under center, and we know it's gonna be Arch Manning, and I think there's gonna be a lot of fanfare around Texas. So Ole Miss, Georgia, Texas AM, Alabama all went 7-1 last year. Um, and they played really good football, you know. But the problem is with the BCS and a playoff system in the rankings, you get that tag with that loss, especially early season, you're in trouble. Texas finished 6-2. Now, if you remember, Texas, everyone was waiting to see how the other shoe was going to drop to open up the season because they had to go on the road against Ohio State. Manning played poorly, and then they ripped all three straight, and then they got humbled on the road against Florida 29-21. Little different animal right now. They open up the season with Texas State, i.e., Cupcake. Then they have Ohio State, but then they play UTSA, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Florida. These are winnable games for the Longhorns to see if they can get out of the gate fast. Uh, as far as Manning last year, 3,100 yards, 25 touchdowns, seven picks, sacked 23 times line, did a pretty good job. He started to really come into his own late as the season progressed. You know, the game started to slow down for him. He had that back-to-back 300 plus yard performances against um Vanderbilt as well as Mississippi State, the Bulldogs. So he is, if you look at the 2026 Heisman odds as it stands right now. As it stands, CJ Carr and Arch Manning, plus 750. So they got the shortest odds. Dante Moore, Oregon, plus 1,000. Remember now, Ole Miss bringing back Trinidad Chamless plus 1100. Jeremiah Smith, the wide receiver, Ohio State, longest stretch odds at plus 1,300. Speaking of the NFL, which a lot is going on right now in the NFL, I feel because we had the Stanley Cup Finals, the NBA Finals, uh, you got some movement going on in the NFL. Uh, if you are a Saints fan, you've been tracking some of the Saints. Uh, we'll get into uh the Atlanta Falcons in a moment, but if you are a Saints fan in the panhandle, you know, some of the moves that they've made. Uh Cameron Jordan uh coming back, choosing the Saints again. He says he loves New Orleans. Pretty much uh the defensive end, his number's gonna get retired uh when it's all said and done. I'm not gonna tell you that uh he is a surefire uh Hall of Famer, but I think he's a heck of a player. I mean, I I I look at him and I think from a defensive end, I think he's gonna be uh one of those names that'll be nominated for Canton. And he's coming off an incredible season. I mean, he's had five or six seasons where he's had double-digit sacks ten and a half last year. So uh the vet, the wirely vet at 36 can still play and get to the quarterback. But I think he'll have a shot to get in the hall of fame, no doubt. No doubt. Not sure fire, but he's gonna have a shot to get in the hall of fame. And remember, too, they allowed his contract to void, making him a free agent for the first time since he was a first-round draft pick, number 24 out of California back in 2011. He decided that New Orleans is his home, and obviously he wants to kind of finish out his career where it all began. You know, it's very hard. We rarely see players wear one uniform throughout the whole course of their career, but looks like he's gonna do that. As far as Atlanta, you know, Atlanta kind of by default last season. If if you go by what transpired last year in the NFL, because it was kind of a fluky year, Atlanta finishes 8-9. Remember now, Tampa, Atlanta, Carolina, all 8-9, 471 winning percentage. Little different animal for Atlanta this season when they open up the schedule on the road against Pittsburgh. Home opener, their rival Carolina on the road against Green Bay, on the road against a much improved Saint team, and then the Ravens, and then the Bears and the 49ers. A really tough stretch. If you are a Falcons fan, uh we will talk more about that. I'll talk obviously more about the NFL on my show on Q. Lloyd Vance, our NFL insider, host of Lloyd Vance's insider football, would join us. We're gonna start breaking down the divisions. Plus, I'm also gonna have some guests on the scoreboard show as well. John Bueller, who covers the SEC, Lloyd Vance, who covers the NFL, Nick Costco from 24-7 Sports. They're gonna join me over the next couple weeks as well on the Destin FM Scoreboard show. We'll talk a lot of college football and NFL with them. NBA, oh my goodness, I waited so long. The Knicks finally got it done. You know, so I'm on the road um last weekend, all the way up east, Baltimore, Bowie State, for the 9450 playoffs, which does have a tie to the Destin FM scoreboard show. Chadelle Millinghouse, who plays for Frederick, uh went to Northwest Florida, is a Crestview native, played in the playoffs. Frederick lost to Capitol, Jersey Shore upset New York. Jersey Shore went on the road to beat Baltimore as a six-seed. They beat the three-seed Baltimore rhythm. Then, a day later, they beat the two-seed New York Phoenix. Then a day later, they beat the top seed Capitol on the road to win the championship. And it was a phenomenal, if you get a chance, 94 by 50 on YouTube. I post a lot of links and the clips. But I had a rush to get back to the hotel. And I'm watching the last eight minute uh eight minutes of the Knicks who are down, and the TV's buffering all over the place. It was just, I was not in a good mental state. It was like one of those commercials where you have bad Wi-Fi, and it just kept buffering. But then I knew the Knicks were gonna come back because that's what the Knicks have done all season long, including the playoffs. Jalen Brunson, 45 in a closeout game on the road, and as a diehard Knicks fan, a little revenge from 99, where San Antonio celebrated on the Knicks' home floor of MSG, winning the series in five. The New York Knicks flipped a script, uh, and Jalen Brunson, 45 points in a closeout game. They were a team of destiny. Now I leave it all for the other talking heads to talk about their place in the Pantheon or when you start ranking players like Jalen Brunson, finals MVP, greatest Knicks of all time. I I leave that for the talking heads because I've been a Knicks fan for many, many, many a moon, many years, and I know this team inside and out. And for me to celebrate that championship before I leave this earth, uh, I was absolutely ecstatic. But it also shows that gotta get hot at the right time on any level. And the Knicks came into the playoffs and they started to get hot when they were trailing Atlanta 2-1 in that series, and they just didn't lose a game until they finally lost to San Antonio early on in the finals in game three, and then they won the next two, and here we go, history. And you saw the parade, Canyon of Heroes. Now, are the Knicks gonna be able to run it back? You got a couple teams ahead of them as far as the odds. I don't care about any of that. I don't care about any of that. At the end of the day, just win the championship. Doesn't matter how you get it done. That's the way I look at it. And people will argue with this with me. They they they argue with me all the time with this. I don't care if you're in high school, juco, college, semi-pro, pro, doesn't matter. You get into the dance, you make a run, you win the championship. That's what it's all about. Alright, let me give you a couple updates. So we're gonna try next week. We are going to try next week to grab um Garuple, who's with uh Rocky Bayou. We want to get him on for a couple moments and uh just talk about the season coming up. Rocky Bayou, I think they're gonna be absolutely uh stacked. I think they're gonna have a very good, not only football season, but basketball season. He's their head varsity basketball coach. Uh, and remember too, he actually stepped down, okay, as Destin's boys basketball coach. Okay, remember that. So he stepped down as Destin's boys basketball coach. He was 60 and 95, 387 winning percentage. Not the best, not the best, but he was also at Bell Creek from 2020 to 2023. Now he's with Rocky Bayou. So always interesting, right? Always interesting when you kind of jump within the region. But we're looking forward to speaking with him, and we got a couple other high school head football coaches that are planning to come on the show as well. So we are pumped.
