Fans, welcome to another edition of the Destin FM Scoreboard Show. As always, I'm your host, Rich Kinoneas. A very nice and happy and warm, or I should say, hopefully you guys are staying cool Monday to everyone down in our area. And it's been a light kind of week or weeks, if you will, regarding high school sports. We'll mix in a little minor league baseball, get you caught up to speed on some MLB. And yes, I'll give you some thoughts on the World Cup. But as far as what's going on in our backyard, hey, quick shout out for Walton Beach. They have a new boys golf coach. That would be Brian McDonald. He was named their newest head coach. So we'll mention that later on this week as well with some of our Destin FM 60 second scoreboards. Um I talked last week at length regarding the Wahoos, and I know it's the second half of the season, and they've kind of, like I said, they've they've kind of had a hit or miss kind of bag over the last 16, 17 games in the second half to start the second half season because you know minor league baseball, that's how it's broken down. Obviously, they had a very rough weekend against Biloxi, dropping two or three. Um, they begin a five-game set at home against Columbus, and then they round out the month of July already. Think about that. They have four on the road against Knoxville. But if you go back to their last series or two, to start the month off, they had a brutal stretch where they dropped four or five on the road to Rocket City. Now they came back and they bounced back nicely, winning three straight against Montgomery. But then the pitching again, it's kind of been their bugaboo. They give up 11 runs, they give up four runs, then they had to deal with the rain and the issues. So they go on and they lose two straight, and then that's magnified after they have a four-game break, and then they go back on the road to Baloxy and drop two out of three. So it's kind of been a mixed bag. It's been a frustrating season, especially the second half. If you are a fan of the Wahoos, but I'll say this you know, if you look at this team, they do have a pretty decent lineup, and you're starting to see some players have really nice seasons. I mean, we've talked about Dylan Lewis. He's the team leader with 17 home runs, 43 ribbies. That's tied with Frembrook Tribble, who's got 43 runs batted in 13 home runs. Um, you got a couple of really good players. You look at Christian Hernandez, their shortstop, uh, Cam Canonero, their center fielder. Not a ton of pop, but they're doing a much better job hitting 267, 344, respectively. Pitching just needs to hold up, but they've got a deep, deep starting lineup, and they've got a deep pitching staff as well. And it'll be interesting to see. I mean, you start talking about their splits, you talk about, you know, what they're doing in international league, obviously. And it has been somewhat of a uh, it's been a mixed bag, to be quite honest with you. And, you know, the goal is to put together halves. Put together halves. And a lot of times they just need to figure out how to kind of scratch and claw to win some games. And that's kind of been the issue of late. Now, if you go back to their game a couple of nights ago, Brandon Compton was ridiculous. I mean, he was just on fire, just killing the ball in Southern League. The Oahu is basically batting around. They destroyed the Shuckers 16-6. This was on Saturday night. He goes three for five with a double home run, six ribies, ties a single game franchise record, set by Jacob Marcy back in 2024. Also cracked a three-run homer in the first inning, his fourth in as many games dating back to a week ago last Saturday, the fourth Blue Wahoos player in team history to Homer in four straight games. So there you go. That's a hell of a run. So the offense is there. They were backed by Alex Williams, allowed a two-run homer to Blake Brook in the first inning, settled down a little bit, protected the massive lead, four innings, three-run ball, and a no decision. They just need to just have their starters go a little more deeper into these games. It's a little different in majors where the starter four and two-thirds, five, and you're pulled and you go right to the middle lead because in baseball, in the majors, they stretch out the middle relief and the back end of the rotation. You don't have that luxury at times when you're talking single A, double A, triple A, but you know, they're due for more wins and they're due to start winning some of these series. So it certainly has kind of been a mixed bag for the Wahoos. As far as MLB, do not look now. I mean, oh my goodness. Are you seeing what's going on in the AL East? Wow. So the Rays were trying to run away from the Yankees. The Rays lead the Yankees by a game and a half. But the Boston Red Sox, who were left for dead, they were buried in the AL East a month ago. They've ripped off 13 straight wins. Yes. 13 straight wins. Their run differential sits at plus 45. They are absolutely on a roll, and they just swept Tampa in a critical series. They get set for a series against uh Baltimore, but it's been beyond impressive. I mean, it's their longest winning streak in franchise history, and you got to go way back. Maybe a few of you remember, but you got to go way, way, way back into the time machine. I'm talking um, you're going to the 40s, I think 45 season when they won 13 straight games. But they put themselves right in contention right now. And it's interesting with the trade down trade deadline coming up. Because when they were buried 9, 10, 11 back, everyone's thinking that they're going to be sellers. Maybe they are going to be buyers. Tampa Bay, they've struggled. As I mentioned, they dropped four straight against Boston. That's a bad series. They got swept. They lost two out of three, or I should say they lost two out of four entering that. They took um, they were two and two against the Yankees in a four-game set, and then they won the series against the Mariners, but dropped the finale eight to two. Their pitching has gone south, their offense has gone south. They've got some, they got issues right now. They definitely have some issues. And they will definitely be a buyer at the trade deadline. They need another bat. Everything's falling on Cameron Arrow. Diaz has struggled a little bit. Um, Aranda has struggled a little bit. Simpson has struggled a little bit. Really no pop in those bats, 13-14 home runs, respectively. I mean, Simpson in 92 games played, 341 at bats. He's your left fielder. He's provided zero pop. I mean, this team is not hitting home runs like we've seen in years past. That might be the buckaboo for them. All right, uh, so you got Tampa, the Yankees, Boston 1-2-3 in the east. Uh, Baltimore is pretty much tied, or I should say, a game back of the Boston Red Sox. You got Cleveland, a one game back behind the Chicago White Sox. Texas, a half game up on Seattle. Then the NL East, Miami and Atlanta. So the Braves and Marlins fans are respectively down in our area. Right now, the Braves lead the Phillies by three games. They're five and five over their last 10. And the Marlins, you know, they're hanging around, they're hanging around. Yes, they've hit a little bit of a dry spell. Yes, they've dropped uh six straight. Uh the Guardian series was bad. They couldn't do anything offensively. They gave up 13 runs in three games. And then the Brewers, once again, you're trying to get back by pitching, but the offense doesn't do anything. I believe the Marlins are they're gonna hang around when you talk about the wild card. Because if you go to the standings, they're right there. Chicago, Phillies, St. Louis, and the Marlins. You got four teams volume for two spots right now with Chicago and the Phillies the front runner. And the Phillies are a mixed bag as well. Now, if you want to talk MVP conversation, Kyle Schwarber's having a ridiculous season. I mean, he's feaster famine. He's already got 33 home runs. He's on pace to hit 60 plus, which is incredible. Think about the last several years. He had 46, 47, 38, 56 last year, 33. He's been everything the Phillies needed him to be from a home run hitting standpoint. He's going to close in on 400 in his career. And if he found a way to get to 500, then you make the case in a couple years. He's a Hall of Famer. But that's where we're at right now, baseball wise. And it'll start to pick up. As I alluded to, trade deadline right around the corner. We just got through the all-star break. You got the Dodgers and the Phillies later tonight, the Rays and the Jays. And then, as I mentioned, the Red Sox tried to go for 14 against the O's, Atlanta and the Padres. Atlanta's hosting the pods in that one. And the Marlins traveling to Houston. That is an 8-10 first pitch. So we'll see if they can kind of regroup. As far as the NBA, I know LeBron James's decision is supposed to be coming down any moment. A lot of people believe the odds makers have him firmly going back to Miami and South Beach. Cleveland's in play. The Sixers that I mentioned on my show on Q, they're in play as well. So we'll watch that. I know the league came out and said they're waiting for LeBron James to make a decision for scheduling. I mean, honestly, just make the schedule, man. Don't allow the player to kind of hamstring you in that regard. Uh, World Cup. How about this? Maya España, who probably should have won 4-0 on Sunday against Argentina, had chance after chance, shot after shot, goals taken away. I mean, Argentina really, you know, they they they they're a physical team, they're a very poor loser. And Messi, who's had an incredible run. I don't know if he's going to play in the next World Cup in four years. He'll be 43. He's 39. He had a wonderful run. But Spain is a great team. They played possession, they controlled the tempo, they controlled the pace, they kept it, you know, deep in Argentina territory, pretty much the entire match. Shot after shot, the Argentinian goalkeeper was brilliant. I mean, literally held them in check. And once Fernandez goes out and Argentina's down a man, it was only a matter of time before Spain was going to capitalize. You saw it in the extra time. I think they made it a lot harder than it had to be because it reminded me of the you know, the England loss. England basically gets up, and then what do they do? They turn around and they're playing the game, they're playing the match as if they're not trying to close it out and win, and they stop being aggressive. Spain got a little too fancy in the box with a couple extra little touches here and there, but they dominated. They had they they held possession for 66%, 12 shots on goal. 12 shots on goal, and like big chance created is pretty much where you think you're gonna poke it through. And now they also had one goal disallowed, but congratulations to Espana. They win the World Cup, they last won it in 2010. They might have a chance to recreate, they might have a chance uh to repeat. NFL, really nothing of uh substance to uh kind of get into, to be honest with you. Really nothing of substance, and um, you know, right now we're getting right around training camp, right? Uh we are also um, you know, listen, I mean, there's there's gonna be buzz with all these teams in the NFL. You know, in our backyard, Tampa, Jacksonville, Miami, Atlanta Falcons, New Orleans Saints. I can tell you right now, out of those teams I mentioned, I think the Saints Atlanta are gonna struggle. I think Miami's gonna be the worst, one of the worst teams in football. Jacksonville is gonna be a mixed bag, and I really don't know what to tell you about Tampa, Baker Mayfield in that contract. I mean, he's getting up there, you know, you lost some weapons, you lose Mike Evans, they got to run the football. The NFC South, which has three teams pretty much in our backyard, in Atlanta, Tampa, and the Saints, if you will, if we're really talking about the fan base, right? The displaced fan base, then yeah, um it's it's it's interesting when you think about it, right? Because we've got the Emerald Coast spanning about a hundred miles of the panhandle along the Gulf of Mexico. So you're gonna get all these fan bases to follow these teams. But I think Atlanta has still got to figure out what you know, really figure out the quarterback position going forward. Same thing with the Saints. Miami, you're giving a lot of money to Malik Willis. He had a cup of coffee with Tennessee and Green Bay. Can he be that guy? Um AFC, I did a preview on my channel on Q at RichQ on Q. It's a bad division. It should be Buffalo's to win along with New England, but the Jets and Miami will be bad teams. But the teams down in the Sunshine State and around our surrounding area, I think some of them are in store for a very, very long season. Uh, all right, so SEC, college football. Here you go. Here you go, SEC, my friends. Power rankings, cues rankings. Well, not really, but we've kind of assembled the um the like-minded individuals, right? And the the meaning of the minds. I mean, I look, you go one, two, three, Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma. Kirby Smart, Georgia, the SEC's most complete uh roster now. Gunner Stockton inherits a pretty inexperienced offensive line. Uh I should say experienced offensive line as well as defense. Pardon me, sorry for that. A little alert came up. The Bulldogs remain the top team because, again, they play defense and they're a veteran team. So I think, again, they're in line to be a very um formidable team in the SEC. Now, they're looking for their third straight SEC title. Texas, they've recruited really well. Uh, they'll be in the thick of the SEC and the CFP race. Oklahoma, you've got John Mattee back at full strength. He had that hand injury. So Georgia, Texas, Oklahoma, my top three. Then you have uh, I would say LSU Old Miss is kind of you might want to flip it. Albert, um, I'm sorry, Alabama. I don't think Alabama is going to be a very good football team because they're gonna have to rely on the running game behind their quarterback, whether it's gonna be Russell or Mack. So we got to see if that comes in a pitcher, whether it's gonna be Austin Mack or Keelan Russell, John Bueller from fan side it covers the SEC. We'll have him on next week. Then I would say Texas AM, maybe Missouri, Tennessee, South Carolina, Florida, and I think Auburn. Now we start to creep into the bottom. Vanderbilt's had some uh transfers. Look, they they they want to try to turn into a respectful SEC program. They almost made the CFP last year. Uh, I just they're not gonna be a surprise this year. Arkansas, look, it's a tough team. Uh, but man, I'll tell you, the deeper the conference grows, they're gonna be in trouble. They're gonna win a game or two. They don't have a business winning. Kentucky, it's a disappointing 2024, 2025. They're gonna have to figure out a way to get better quarterback play. Mississippi is probably your bottom dweller because the SEC is so it's just stacked, man. Georgia, favored, Texas, Oklahoma, LSU, several others. Enough talent to make us one of the deepest and most competitive races in the country. But I kind of laid out where I think some of the bottom feeders are going to be. And look, we get it, we get it kicked off very soon. I mean, we turn around, we blink, and we are ready to roll, not only with high school, but college. And it starts, Bill Belichick, North Carolina against TCU, August 20, uh 29th. As far as, like I said, we'll bring it back quickly to high school in our backyard. You know, right now you're just in a you're pretty much in a um, I don't want to say a window dressing time. Like there's a couple high schools in our area that um, you know, can take that next step, right? And and Destin now has that 2026 playoff eligibility. Uh, obviously, you know, they've got a couple of new faces, right? So now they got a district home for the first time. You got a new quarterback in Kellen Ramsley. Uh, that's a team. We're gonna kind of highlight a little more. I mean, it's listen, finally, they waited a while. You know, they waited a while. FHSAA membership last summer, and they earned that playoff eligibility, um, but it was too late to schedule any type of district game. So pretty much they weren't on the outside looking in. But now, district home class 2A, District 1 alongside Pensacola Catholic, Freeport, Walton. So here we go. I think we'll get into that a little more. They lost some offensive weapons, they got some young talent at the wide receiver. We'll pop on their head coach as well. So, you know, it's um, I think right now there's a lot of excitement in the area. You know, E.G. Green is a good head coach, uh, whether it's you know, Destin, Ford Walton, South Wallon, Walton, you know, Baker, Niceville, Crestview, uh, you know, Choctaw. There's some really good high schools in the area. If you look at Destin's 2026 schedule, I think tentatively right now they kick off the um kickoff classic is second week of August. It's against Arnold. They get they get a nice little break after North Bay Haven because they have a bye September 11th and 18th, then back against Pensacola Catholic. But then they have Walton Freeport Bozeman, who's a good team to round it out into October. So we're looking forward to giving you a lot of your high school football fill as well. Come late August. We'll get in a little of the power rankings because at the end of the day, it's very subjective, and we have a little fun with it because you have so many different regions right in our backyard.
