We all go through periods of discouragement, when life seems to push us down. The power of these Psalms have helped me when I find myself in those valleys.
Anyone feeling discouraged can find comfort in hearing the Word of God.
"Your Word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path" (Psalm 119:105)
Psalm seventy-three. Surely God is good to Israel, to those who are pure in heart. But as for me my feet were almost gone, my steps had nearly slipped. For I was envious of the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. For there are no struggles in their death, but their strength is firm. They are free from burdens of men, neither are they plagued like other men. They say, How does God know? Is there knowledge in the most high? Behold, these are the wicked. Being always at ease, they increase in riches. Surely I have cleansed my heart in vain and washed my hands in innocence. When I tried to understand this it was too painful for me until I entered God's sanctuary. Surely you set them in slippery places, you throw them down to destruction, how they are suddenly destroyed, they are completely swept away with terrors. I am continually with you. You have held my right hand, you will guide me with your counsel, and afterward receive me to glory. Whom do I have in heaven? There is no one on earth whom I desire besides you. My flesh and my heart fails, but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for ever. For behold, those who are far from you shall perish. You have destroyed all those who are unfaithful to you. But it is good for me to come close to God. I have made the Lord God my refuge that I may tell of all your works. My cry goes to God. Indeed I cry to God for help and for him to listen to me. In the day of my trouble I sought the Lord, my soul refused to be comforted. I remember God and I groan. I complain and my spirit is overwhelmed. Will the Lord reject us forever? Will He be favorable no more? Has His loving kindness vanished forever? Does His promise fail for generations? Has God forgotten to be gracious? Has He in anger withheld His compassion? Then I thought, I will appeal to this, I will remember the Lord's deeds, for I will remember your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all your work and consider your doings. You are the God who does wonders. You have made your strength known among the peoples. You have redeemed your people with your arm, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Your way was through the sea, your paths through the great waters. Your footsteps were not known. You led your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron. I will give you thanks with my whole heart. Before the gods I will sing praises to you. I will bow down toward your holy temple, and give thanks to your name for your loving kindness and for your truth. For you have exalted your name and your word above all. In the day that I called you answered me, you encouraged me with strength in my soul. All the kings of the earth will give you thanks, Lord, for they have heard the words of your mouth. Yes, they will sing of the ways of the Lord, for the Lord's glory is great. For though the Lord is high, yet he looks after the lowly, but he knows the proud from afar. Though I walk in the middle of trouble, you will revive me. You will stretch out your hand against the wrath of my enemies. Your right hand will save me. The Lord will fulfill that which concerns me. Your loving kindness, Lord, endures forever. Do not forsake the works of your own hands.
