There's a reason some Etsy sellers push through the hard seasons and keep building while others quit and it usually has nothing to do with talent, creativity, or even strategy. It comes down to mindset.

In this episode I'm sharing four mindset shifts that I believe every successful Etsy seller has had to make at some point. We're talking about moving from testing the water to business owner, from expecting quick results to playing the long game, from chasing perfection to valuing progress, and from resisting change to learning how to adapt to it.

If you've ever felt stuck, frustrated, or like you're doing everything right and still not seeing results — this episode is for you.

Let's get to it. Hey there, welcome back. So the question: What does it take to build a successful Etsy shop?

SPEAKER_00

Is it finding a product people are buying? Is it understanding and applying SEO? Is it creating designs that resonate or showcasing your products in appealing ways? If you said yes to any and all of those, you'd be right. But I believe there's something just as important, maybe even more important, that isn't always taught, and that's your mindset. Today I'm going to share four mindset shifts that I believe every successful Etsy seller has had to make at some point. Some sellers come in with one or two of these already in place, but most of us have to work through every single one throughout different points in our business. Before we get into the shifts, I want to talk about what I mean by both success and mindset, as you're going to hear it in this episode. So, first success. What makes a successful Etsy shop is different for everyone. For one person, it might be an extra thousand dollars a month. For another, it's paying the mortgage. And for somebody else, it might be being able to leave their day job. And all of those are completely valid. So when I talk about success today, I'm talking about your version of it, whatever that is. And more than that, I'm talking about the growth it takes to get there. Because no one goes from zero to successful overnight. You have to grow into it. The mindset shifts we're going to discuss today are going to allow you the space to grow toward your successful Etsy shop. Now, when I think about mindset, I'm talking about the things we think, believe, and tell ourselves. So the stories we run on repeat without even realizing it, and the assumptions we bring into our business every single day. Those thoughts matter because they don't just stay in our heads, they show up in our actions. They determine whether we keep going or give up, whether we blame Etsy or look for ways to improve, whether we hit publish or keep tweaking, whether we stay consistent or quit because we don't see results fast enough. Depending on what those thoughts and beliefs are, they can either propel us forward toward our goals or hold us back and ultimately cause us to quit. Thankfully, we have the power to shift our mindset from thoughts and beliefs that are hurting our business to ones that help us to get where we want to go. Not to say it's easy because it definitely isn't, especially in the early days when there is so much uncertainty in what we're doing and it feels like every decision matters. But even as you move from beginner to a more experienced seller, you have to check in on your mindset. Because changing it is not something you can do with the flick of a switch. It's a conscious and intentional decision that you have to make over and over again, especially when things are hard or when they feel slow or when things aren't going the way we expect. Those are the moments that reveal your mindset and ultimately shape your future success. All right, so let's get into the four mindset shifts that you need to make to get the Etsy success you desire. The first shift is about how you fundamentally see what you're doing. Successful Etsy sellers eventually have to make the shift from dipping their toe in the water to business owner. They have to stop thinking of Etsy as something they're trying and start thinking of it as a business they're building. Now, I know there are sellers who come in with that business owner mindset from day one. And if that's you, you're already a step ahead of so many others. But the reality is that a lot of sellers start out in try-it mode. And that's completely normal and understandable. You're new, you don't know if this is going to work, and you don't want to pour a bunch of time and energy into something that might not pan out. So you tell yourself, I'll just see how it goes. The problem is that when you're in try-it mode, you naturally make different decisions than someone who's in build it mode. You hesitate to invest time learning because you're not sure it'll be worth it, and you don't create systems because you're not convinced you'll still be doing this six months from now. When sales are slow, you start to wonder if it's a sign that Etsy just isn't for you. And when things get hard, it's a lot easier to walk away because after all, you're only trying it out. Now compare that to someone who's building a business. They expect there to be a learning curve, they expect to make mistakes, they know there's going to be slow times, they don't see those things as evidence that they're failing, and instead they see it as part of the process. A seller just trying it out asks, hmm, I wonder if this is going to work. While a business owner is asking, what do I need to do to make this work? Those are two completely different questions, and they lead to two completely different sets of actions. Now I know what I'm saying here sounds very black and white, like you're either one or the other. But the reality is that every one of these mindset shifts exists on a spectrum. So picture a line, and on the left side is the person who's just trying Etsy to see what happens, and on the right side is the person who fully sees themselves as building a business. Most of us somewhere in between. We have some thoughts and beliefs that lean just trying it out, and we have some that lean on building a business. The important thing isn't where you are on that spectrum today. The important thing is recognizes where your decisions are coming from and intentionally working to shift them. Because the more you see your Etsy shop as a business you're building, the more you'll naturally make the kinds of decisions that successful business owners make. So here's what I want you to do. The next time you have a decision to make in your business, whether it's if you're going to create another listing or invest in a tool or push through a slow week, pause for a second and ask yourself Am I making this decision from a mindset of someone who's just trying out Etsy or someone who wants to build a business? The more often you ask yourself that question, the more you'll begin shifting your mindset. And as your mindset shifts, so do your decisions. To wrap up this first shift, I want you to remember this. You don't build a successful Etsy business first and then think like a business owner. You have to first start thinking like a business owner, and that's what helps you build a successful Etsy business. Okay, so the second mindset shift is going from expecting quick results to playing the long game. I honestly think this is one of the biggest reasons sellers quit. So many new sellers open their shop, list five, 10, 15 products, and then wait. A month goes by without sales and they start wondering if Etsy just doesn't work, questioning all the decisions they've made up to that point. And unfortunately, that's where a lot of people stop. And I do get it. When you're putting in time and energy, you want to see a payoff. Your time's valuable and you don't want to feel like you're wasting it. But the expectation that an Etsy shop should produce meaningful results within a few weeks just isn't realistic. And when we hold on to that mindset, every day without a sale starts to feel like a failure and it fills us with doubt. Think about almost any other skill. No one expects to become fluent in Spanish after a month. No one expects to play the piano beautifully after a handful of lessons. We understand that those things require practice, repetition, and patience. Yet for some reason we expect our Etsy shop to be different. The sellers who are successful have made the shift from expecting quick results to understanding that they're playing the long game. They've accepted that there's going to be a season where they're putting in a lot of work without getting much in return. And instead of seeing that as a sign that they should quit, they just see it as part of the process. If more people committed to giving themselves six months of consistent effort instead of six weeks, I truly believe we'd have a lot more successful Etsy sellers. Because one of the biggest differences between the people who succeed and the people who quit is rarely talent or luck. It's that successful sellers are willing to stay in the game longer than most people are comfortable staying without seeing results. So here's the shift I want you to make. The next time you catch yourself wondering if Etsy is worth it because you haven't gotten the results you hoped for, ask yourself this Am I stopping because this isn't working or because it's taking longer than I expected? To wrap up this second shift, remember this success on Etsy isn't about getting results quickly, it's about staying committed long enough to create that. The third mindset shift is moving from believing everything has to be perfect to realizing that progress is more valuable than perfection. And here's what I want to say about this one before we get into it. On the surface, perfectionism doesn't look like a problem. It actually looks like you're being responsible. You want your shop to look professional and your designs to be good and your images to be the best they can be. The problem is when perfection becomes the goal instead of something you're just continually working towards. Because what perfectionism actually does is convinces you that you're always just one more step away from being ready. I'll open my shop once I have a few more listings, or I'll start Etsy ads once my SEO is better. Or I'll launch this product once I create more mock-ups, or start my email list once I've created the perfect welcome sequence. The goalpost just keeps moving. And because of that, we spend more time preparing than actually doing. The sellers who succeed eventually make the shift from believing everything has to be perfect to believing that progress is more important. And instead of asking themselves, how can I make this perfect? They start asking things like, is this good enough? And what's the next step that moves me forward? That's a completely different way of thinking. One mindset keeps you preparing and the other keeps you moving. One waits until everything feels ready, the other understands that the best learning happens after you take action. That's why progress is what helps build a business. Progress means taking action. It means opening the shop, finishing the designs, hitting publish. Progress means trying something and learning from it and making it a little better the next time. You can prepare for months, but there are some lessons you will never learn until you're in the trenches actually building the business. That's where the real learning happens. Now I know there are times when you really do need more information or more preparation, but many times what you really need is the confidence to just move forward before everything feels perfect. Okay, so to wrap up this third shift, remember this progress will teach you things that perfection never can because progress requires action, and action is where the real learning happens. So let's move into that fourth and final mindset shift, which is moving from resisting change to embracing it. If you've been selling on Etsy for any length of time, you already know this one thing to be true: things change. Etsy updates the platform or changes features or adjusts their policies. New competitors enter, new products come on the market, design trends come and go, and new tools can come along that completely change the way people create products and run their business. And every single time something changes, you'll see two very different reactions from sellers. One group that immediately says, why do they keep doing this? This isn't fair. This isn't the way it's supposed to be. They spend their energy complaining and wishing things would go back to the way they were. The other group says, Okay, this is where we are now. How do I make this work? Those are two completely different mindsets. Now, don't get me wrong, it's completely natural to feel frustrated or annoyed or even angry. I get frustrated too. Sometimes Etsy changes or changes made by the print provider are genuinely inconvenient. Sometimes they feel completely unnecessary, and sometimes they mean we have to relearn something that we've just figured out. But after I've let myself be frustrated for a minute, I quickly remind myself that it's useless because whether I like the change or not, it's here. The sellers who are successful eventually make the shift from fighting change to learning how to adapt to it. They understand that adaptability isn't optional when you're building an online business. It's one of the skills that helps you stay successful over time. Many of them even take it one step further. They don't think about all the ways the change is going to hurt their business, and instead, they think about how they can use it to their advantage. Because change creates opportunities. While some sellers are spending weeks complaining about what's different, others are already figuring out how to make it work for them. That's the mindset of someone who's building a successful Etsy business. They don't waste their energy wishing things were the way they used to be. They put that energy into figuring out what's possible now. So here's the shift I want you to make. The next time Etsy rolls out a change or something in your business doesn't go exactly how you expect it, resist the urge to immediately assume it's going to ruin everything. And instead ask yourself, okay, given where things are today, what's the best next move? That question immediately shifts your focus from what you can't control to what you can. So to wrap up this fourth shift, remember this successful Etsy sellers aren't successful because they avoid change. They're successful because they learn to adapt to it. And in a business like Etsy, adaptability is one of your greatest competitive advantages. Alright, so there you have it. Four mindset shifts that I believe every successful Etsy seller has to make at some point in their journey. I want you to remember that these aren't boxes you check once and move on from, they're ongoing shifts. Even after years of selling, I still have moments where I have to remind myself to think like a business owner. Or I have to remember that I'm in this for the long haul. I have to choose progress over perfection, and I need to embrace change instead of resisting it. Mindset is something you continually work on. But when you get your mindset pointed in the right direction, every other part of your business becomes easier. You make better decisions, you take more action, and you become more resilient when things don't go as planned. So this week I want you to pay attention to your thoughts. Listen to the stories you're telling yourself because the thoughts that are holding you back today might just be the very ones standing between you and the business you're trying to build. And remember that every successful Etsy seller you admire has had to make these shifts too. They weren't born thinking this way, they learned it over time. And now it's your turn. I hope this episode got you thinking in new ways. Thank you for hanging with me, and I will see you in the next episode.
