Welcome to Healthy Knox, connecting Knoxville to better health. This is the show where we cut through the noise and get real about what it takes to live a healthier life right here in East Tennessee. Your hosts are two doctors who aren't just talking about health. They're living it and delivering it to this community every single day. Dr. Cherise and Dr. Trent from Corrective Chiropractic, let's get into it. Hello, everyone. This is Dr. Cherise Houston, and you're listening to Healthy Knox. Our podcast is designed to bring you the best health professionals in Knoxville, Tennessee, because we wanna see Tennessee become one of the healthiest places on the planet. And my office is Corrective Chiropractic in North Knoxville. And as a chiropractor, it's always been my lifelong desire to bring all different types of healing arts together and coordinate with other community members to bring healthy therapies and healthy practices to everyone so that they can create a healthier life and a better lifestyle, and heal from things that are not easily healed. So I'm here today with my friend Erin Baxley. How you doing, Erin? Doing pretty good. Erin, it has been such a pleasure to sit here and get to know you today. I am so thrilled that you're here. So Erin is the owner of Holistic Care Spa here in Knoxville, and she has been helping people with their health challenges for what now, 25 years? Since May 2001. Wow, that's a long time. So I know for myself, I've been in healthcare and in chiropractic by virtue of birth, my dad was a chiropractor, but in practice going on 36 years now, I'm just starting to get warmed up. What do you think? So why don't you tell us a little bit about yourself, Erin? What brought you to the desire that you were gonna want to have a healing center? When I was growing up, my grandmother was always into using herbs and she took me to a chiropractor starting at 12 years old. So I already had grown up knowing about all that. And when I was 16, my grandmother and my aunt decided that they wanted to own a body wrap shop. So tell me about body wraps. That's so interesting. What do they do? So our body wrap is a full mineral body wrap. It's good for compacting and inch loss, skin tightening, detoxing. It helps pull the toxins from the interstitial space of your body. It helps with the excess fluids you might be carrying. If you're dehydrated, it actually hydrates you. That's really fascinating. After a couple years we got the far-infrared sauna and added the ionic foot bath. And in 2006 we both became herbalists. Wow. That's awesome. This is all holistic healthcare, by the way, ladies and gentlemen, and it's really fascinating to me because these are concepts that I've grown up with. But I find that most people don't really understand how their body functions, so this might be new to a lot of them. Do you think that people in Knoxville really know how to detox their body and the things that can help them promote better health, and wellness, and vitality? I think they're getting better at it. There seems to be a lot more places now opening up and people looking into it more, a lot more people focused on their health and wellness now. That's so awesome, and I think what you're doing is really phenomenal because I speak to my patients a lot about the importance of detoxing the body. Because if you're toxic, it's really hard to create health and wellness. We change the oil in our car, we change the filters in our car, but we don't really do much to change or to take pressure off of, let's say, the liver or the lymphatic system. But your business is really focused on doing those types of things. Would you agree? Oh, yeah. What other types of benefits or modalities you might have to help people detox? We have a far-infrared sauna, the ionic foot bath. I do red light therapy biomagnetic therapy Those are all awesome. And the more we take the toxic load off the body, the healthier you can become. You were telling me over lunch, about what happens when your body is overloaded with toxins. What are the, some of those signs? Share those with us? Fatigue, which f- fatigue can be a symptom of so many things. But if you're just tired all the time, maybe taking naps all the time your skin doesn't feel hydrated you're not as hydrated. Your body may not be absorbing the water that you're drinking. Your body may not be flushing out what it should, and makes you have liver issues. And also, like when your digestion will be screwed up as well. You start feeling really bloated after you eat. So those are all symptoms, being toxic. Yes. And sometimes your, the color of your eyes. How you're sleeping at night how you, how many times you use the bathroom in a day. Those are all indicators. And are you having regular bowel movements? It's not an exciting thing to talk about, but these are all signs that the body may be off balance and need a little cleansing and just like we have the seasons here in Knoxville, there's spring, summer, winter, and fall those are really great times to do a cleanse also. What are the benefits of detoxing? Your sleep gets better. Your joints just feel better. At least my joints feel better when I detox. There's different symptoms of things less medications. That's always good because our society is really over-medicated. Not that we don't need medicine, it has its place, but really getting at the root cause is really what I believe we've been sitting here talking about today, and that's one of the ways that we can get to it, is if we're giving our body basically rest giving the liver rest. When you detox, everything backs up to the liver, so giving that a good cleanse is really a good thing, and finding out where the weak spots are inherently in everybody's lifestyle. We can improve the environment and then improve our ability to heal, not just manage a problem, but heal from it if you really want that. And there's something that I read on your website that I really liked, and I will repeat it here, if I may. It's recharge, restore, and rebalance, and these modern holistic wellness experiences are actually designed to support relaxation, so that's another benefit, right? Recovery and detox support whole body restoration, which is right up our alley. We, we definitely have the same goals in mind when we're wanting to help people become more health conscious and healthier in general. That definitely will promote a healthier Knoxville, don't you think? Oh, yeah, definitely. So what health issues do you see in your office, share some and how you help with those? Dealing with a lot of allergies with the springtime and summer that have come and joint pain, neuropathy issues, you were talking about some of the female problems like endometriosis. You've seen benefits from some of your practices. I imagine some migraines would clear up, too, if people were getting detoxed on a more regular basis. We really don't understand as a culture how all the systems work together. The nervous system regulates all the function in the body. But learning how to take care of the body, when and what to feed it, as well as giving it a rest by detoxifying, that means abstaining from alcohol, sugar, dairy, things of that nature that will cause inflammation When you go through some of your protocols I imagine that people would respond quicker to a whole lot of different things like weight loss. They wouldn't have the trouble that we see a lot of people do, and we have a pretty big challenge with obesity in our country. So I think those are all really viable tools to help with people. So tell me about your personal convictions about holistic wellness. I went to doctors a lot when I was younger, and they never really could figure out different things. And so I started seeing people in the alternative health field when I was about 22, 23. And within one visit it was like, "Oh, here's a homeopathic supplement. Take it for 30 days," and it was gone. When I had gone to the doctor and gone to the doctor. And what did they tell you? They would just tell me, "Oh, you have anxiety and your stomach is this," or, "You need Pepcid," or, "Take some Tums." And in one visit I went and she said, "Oh, you have H. Pylori, and here's a homeopathic," and it cleared it right up. That is so cool. I hear stories like that from other practitioners like yourself. I just think it's really fascinating. And we were talking again, you and I, earlier about how when people have reflux, mostly what's prescribed are antacids, when in essence you really don't have enough stomach acid to break that food down, and so it comes right back at you. And then if you're taking antacids, you're making the situation ultimately worse. Isn't that right? Oh, yeah. So Erin, why don't you tell the audience where we can find you in West Knoxville? And I understand you're actually opening a new site in my neck of the woods, so I wanna hear about that too. Where are you located in West Knoxville? In West Knoxville, we are off of Cedar Bluff on Sherway Road, so between Parkside and Kingston Pike. We're near Chophouse. That road is Sherway Road that comes out. Awesome. 455 Sherway Road. And that's Holistic Care Spa, right? That is Holistic Care Spa, We're opening up an second location and it's Holistically Rooted Health and Wellness Fountain City. So we're gonna be right across from the Fountain City Park, and then the, in between the duck pond, so on Hotel Road. I think that's so exciting. I can't wait till you guys get open. I'm gonna be the first on the list to come in and get some of your services, because they sound so phenomenal. July 11th is our grand opening, and we're gonna have free services. So if you, There should be a sign-up that you can come in and try out some services for free that day. Oh, wow, that sounds great. And you said that was July 11th? July 11th. Awesome. It was certainly my pleasure getting to know you today, Erin, and I am just super excited that you guys are coming over to Fountain City. And I will be sharing your information with my patients as well as a bunch of my friends, and hopefully it's gonna be a tremendous success. I have no doubt, because we can all benefit from detoxification. It's such an overlooked tool when it comes to improving your health. And as we've seen with a lot of our administration, they're really trying to bring the truth back to healthcare, where we're really putting the patient's needs first. And we can do a whole lot more on a conservative level before we ever need to think about any kind of treatment or management of a problem. If we can heal it, that's what we certainly would like to do, right? So thank you so much for tuning in today, and we will have to continue this discussion. And that's it today for our podcast at Healthy Knox, and this has been my pleasure, Dr. Cherice Houston of Corrective Chiropractic North Knoxville. So take care of yourself, people. The time is now. Thank you. That's a wrap on Healthy Knox. Thanks for spending some time with us today. If something we said stuck with you, share it with someone in your life who needs to hear it.
