All right, welcome to episode 12, PRS the show. Uh here, a little different face this evening. Rusty Olmer. Welcome to the show, buddy. Thanks for having me on. Thanks for coming on. It's uh I see as we're getting closer to summer, it might be a little harder with uh with people having plans. I and I'm not saying you're my last resort, but when I thought about what some of the content we're gonna talk about tonight, it was like Rusty would be perfect for this episode. So I'm really glad that you came on. Uh Austin Argains filming with Lupold and uh forgive me, I forget who else he said. Um he's in Arkansas. Uh Josh is getting ready for a photo shoot with Forster products tomorrow. Clay is uh, I think probably being a father right now. But um, anywho, we got an exciting show. Um we're gonna bring Mitchell Wong on, who won the sack match in Washington last weekend. We're gonna talk about an EU Pro Series match, bring Runar Johnson on, and then uh Rusty and I are gonna interrogate our friend Dan Bredicchini about the MDT Hunter Challenge that's coming up this weekend that we'll both be uh that's gonna be a fun match. Yeah, I I don't know what to expect with that match, Rusty. I'll be honest with you. I have no idea.
SPEAKER_04I do. I've I do. I've spent a lot of time talking to Dan about how we're gonna, you know, what rules we're gonna have and how we're gonna run you know some of the stage ideas and that kind of thing, just uh throwing ideas out to him. And I don't know. A lot of the ideas I'm really looking forward to doing them. We've been wanting to do stuff like this for a long time, so I'm really excited about getting to do it.
SPEAKER_01Rusty, where'd you go? Nobody wants to be on the show tonight, including our friend Rusty. Um I guess I'll talk while he's while while he's uh hopefully pulling himself back in. Uh Dan Burkini's match, you'll find it on MDT. It's MDT Hunter Challenge. It's on impact scoring this weekend. Uh so go there, check it out. Uh, talking about last weekend, short action custom steel challenge. We and this is Beamer, uh, Beamer's out tonight as well. Uh I think he's having dinner with a with a buddy or something. Um I don't believe anybody had Mitchell Wong winning this match. It'd be exciting to bring him on and talk about uh his success. Second was Brian Lapina, third was Corson Piper, fourth was Rick's Munn, fifth David Hoff. I don't think any of us had that order uh going down. So uh this uh you know what while we're at while I'm waiting for Rusty to come back, one of the things I wanted to mention, and this is this is something that uh Adam Weienberger threw out to us, said, hey, this uh what would be good to have on the show prior to just having all the match directors come on the week of, let's talk about some matches that have open registration right now. So the uh per the PRS rules, we only allow match registrations for the next uh for matches within 100 days, uh Pro Series matches. Uh and that goes all the way out to the Sack Sizzler, which is Adam and Fred, Indiana, July 25th, that just opened up. Also July 25th, Pancake Lake Open. That's up in Killarney, Manitoba. Uh before that, we have the Sheepdog Showdown, uh hosted by Michael Umbardi in New York, and THS Steel Challenge, Port Pierre, South Dakota, also July 18th. Uh, some other notables, the Hornady Precision Rifle Challenge, Hornedy PRC out in Woodruff, Utah. Uh, I'm gonna bring that match up. We're gonna click on the register button to see 66 spots left. That's usually quite a popular match. Uh Apex, Rocky Mountain Challenge. Dan and Carly do a fantastic job up there. That's got 61 spots left. So these matches are filling up pretty quick. Um, this week we have uh Apprentice Wink and the best in Texas, Loupool best in Texas. Unfortunately, they're not showing yet in impact scoring. Hopefully, they run that this weekend. Uh, unfortunately, Prentice is working tonight, he says, so he won't be able to make the call. And then the other match is the Alpha Munitions Nut Crusher. And I was told that this is a lighter version of the Nut Crusher uh than it has been in past years, but also not in impact scoring. So I'm sorry, folks, if uh if you're looking for those matches this weekend, uh they may or may not be in impact scoring. Um I talked to Paul Down earlier this week and he he said Tuesday night's just not gonna work for him. He's uh he's gonna be setting up until dark, which is uh probably another five hours of of time out there on the Pacific. So and just like that, our friend Rusty Almer is re-entering. Rusty.
SPEAKER_04Sorry about that. We uh we had a glitch here, I guess.
SPEAKER_01No worries, no worries. I I uh just went through the matches that this weekend, the best in Texas and Nutcrusher, and talked about those coming up. We got a few other ones that we're gonna talk about going on uh that are outside the Pro Series, uh at least the domestic pro series. Um Rusty, I want you to give a little bit of a background on uh who you are, where you hail from, what your experience is, and uh some of your interests. Obviously, we can see by the number of dead animals on that enormous wall behind you, you enjoy hunting.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I uh I used to hunt a lot more than I do now. Too busy shooting now to hunt. But uh yeah, I name's Rusty Ulmer. I'm from Arizona, uh northern Arizona. I uh been hunting all my life, mostly go hunting, and then got into the PRS about 10 years ago, 11 years ago, and uh been kind of very involved with that since then. That's been taking up most of my time. I do get to hunt a little bit. Um got six six kids, one still at home. She shot, she shot, she's 11. She shot her first deer at 530 yards down and off of a tripod last fall, so that was pretty cool. She's a good little shooter. That's cool. Uh she's into rodeo, does uh does a lot of barrel racing and that kind of thing. So that takes up a lot of my time recently, too. But it's a ton of fun. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Yeah, that keeps you busy. That keeps you busy for sure. Rodeo. But um, so obviously participated in a ton of hunter matches too, right? And so and I say this uh uh many of our guests, it's okay to say the words NRL hunter on here. It's okay. I don't have any offense to it, I'll say it. Um there's uh Rusty Ulmer Award that was named after you as well, right?
SPEAKER_04Yes, it was.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yep.
SPEAKER_01How did how does one earn the Rusty Olmer Award?
SPEAKER_04So what happened? It's kind of a long story, but I'll try to make it short. So there's three divisions in the NRL Hunter. There are um there is open, heavy, open light, and factory. And so the first year I shot, um I decided I was gonna shoot factory. I bought a uh bought a Tika, one wanna match in factory, and then uh decided I would shoot open light, one match in open light, and then uh decided I'd shoot heavy. And so anyway, I won the divisions and I won all three divisions in one year. And so he thought he thought that was kind of cool. Yeah. And so he decided to make uh Ulmer. I think he waited a couple years before he actually made the award. But anyway, so yeah, it's uh you have to win your division in a match. You have to win the open heavy division, open the win the open light division, and win the factory division in three different matches to get that yeah, to get that Ulmer Award.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Basically in the same year, yeah. Yeah, that's crazy, isn't it? Is anybody else has anybody else won it since you yeah?
SPEAKER_04Um let's see, John Pinch, Matt Alwine, Brady Allenson, and I don't know if there was anyone last year I wasn't at the at the uh championship. That's when he gives those those awards away. Yeah. Um because like you say, you have to do it in the same year. And so but those are the three peop three other people that I know that have done it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean, those and those are uh the obvious studs at the at the game, right? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, they're pretty good, and it it takes some dedication to do that. I mean, to shoot all three divisions, you know, first of all, you get to have to get a factory gun and uh heavy and light. Anyway, it's fun to do. Heck yeah. But yeah, so I I also it's probably not taboo to also mention the NRL center fire, which was before the NRL Hunter. So I shot a lot of that being on the being on the West. Um, that was real heavy for five or six years, so shot a lot of that while I was starting PRS as well.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, and and and you were part of being kind of an ambassador for the PRS to be out in that neck of the woods, too. I mean, you and and Terry Conway, right? I mean, you're good friends with him, right? And right, um, you guys seem to be able to carry the flag for us out there, which is which is awfully nice and an honor for us, you know. So thank you.
SPEAKER_04There's a lot of us that shoot PRS out here, too.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. We certainly are now. Um well it'll be exciting. I I can't wait for us to get our friend Dan on here. I'm gonna invite um I'm gonna invite Mitchell Wong on. He was the winner of the last weekend, uh, last weekend's Pro Series match, Short Action Custom Steel Challenge there in Benji, Washington. Um so we ended up, and I guess you probably weren't aware of this, Rusty, and most people probably aren't. Uh we'd sent the banner and the certs and all that that we send out to all these pro series matches, and there's I don't know, 40, 50 certs that get sent. I uh maybe 40 certs, plus a banner. Send all this out, USPS. Um we try early in the season, uh and this is for everybody's awareness. Early in this season, we kind of parse a few out of the time, a few out of the time, because if we get new partners, we like to update the banner so we don't print off a whole season with the banners and then you know, like, oh, sorry, partner, you never made it to the banner. And we also have been continually getting in certs. So, like today, I I received certs for uh Hodggen, which I haven't opened yet, but I'm like, oh, I hope there's an Asax Deal Challenge one in there, right? Or labeled one. So, but anyways, I sent it out to Sean about 10 days uh prior to his match, and he he never got he they arrived on Monday. Well, on like Thursday or Friday when we knew they weren't gonna show up, like we're emailing him certs, like, hey, you gotta print these out, you know. And um, thankfully we had copies of most of them. But um, so for any of you that uh like there's a trigger text cert in there that says email Ken Wheeler. I still haven't got an email yet, right? But like I need to give you the code so you can get your uh 30, 40, 50% off whatever it is. But um, so those of you guys that were at that match and might happen to listen to this, if you picked up a cert that says email Ken, here I am.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, things are changing all the time. It's hard to keep up with them, isn't it?
SPEAKER_01This time of year, it's it's it's crazy. In a couple weeks, we'll have all the banners out and everything's done, and then then I can kind of take a deep breath. We'll work on pursuit series for a while, and then all of a sudden the the the finale start. But with that, Mitchell Wong. Welcome to the show, bro.
SPEAKER_06Hey Mitchell. Hey, thanks for having me.
SPEAKER_01Heck yeah. Yeah, buddy. I think there's a lot of people at home, especially East Coasters, that are like who just won this match?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, you know who am I? I was watching the last uh the show. I was like, no, no, I mean I've only been shooting for maybe a couple of years now, right? So you know, I was like in the 40s in the finale last year, so um, you know, I'm not surprised I don't hold against you guys. Yeah. I think now you're you're a semi-pro, right?
SPEAKER_03I am, that's correct, yeah. Yeah, that's awesome. Congrats.
SPEAKER_01And I think that's what that's what probably uh what's what probably like uh glossed us over from from selecting you because I I'm gonna show the results from from last week here, short action custom steel challenge. There you are, one by one impact. But I think that semi-pro is gonna surprise some people this year. And I and uh I think I gotta I gotta think back, but I don't think you're the first semi-pro to actually win a match this year, but awesome, awesome nonetheless. Awesome nonetheless. So yeah, thanks guys. Let's talk about it. How long have you been shooting? What of uh, you know, what what guided you to this point? And then um, man, how did how did this match come together for you?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, uh I started um maybe in 2023. So I'm 25, and so you know, I turned 21, get some get some rifles in there, and then get some money to to get a custom. And so I started with 22. I started at uh a local like um club. I'm shooting 22 because I live kind of like closer to the city. There's not many ranges with more than 200 yards. Um so I'm shooting 22, it's easy for me to get there. Uh and then I started winning these like 22 local matches. I'm like, oh wow, maybe I can start like running with like the big guns here and the big guys, you know, that you see on YouTube. You know, you see all like the PRS and like the old NRL people shooting. I'm like, man, I gotta get the center fire. Yeah, yeah, you gotta I gotta get a center fire rifle. And then I'm like, oh, let me take my Savage and 308 out to a competition. I was like, wow, okay, that did not go so uh go so well. Um and so I end up uh wanting to get a little bit better, um, you know, get a dasher, um get it balanced properly, get like a nice scope, um, get a reloading setup. That was that was a big a big one. So stop shooting factory ammo. Um federal um in that savage, which you know, yeah, wasn't great.
SPEAKER_01That's but that's not I mean you're talking about I'm assuming a Savage 110 with the federal gold medal match 308 ammo. Yeah, yeah. I mean as far as factory goes, that's a that's for a long time that was like the gold standard, right? I mean, we're talking Rusty's time, 10, 15, 20, 30 years ago. Like that was the gold standard.
SPEAKER_04I do believe it was. I never shot it, but I do believe it was.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yeah, for factory, for factory, you know.
SPEAKER_03Right.
SPEAKER_01So so you're shooting Dasher, uh full full custom rig?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, so I had I I just went all in, you know. I had I got an impact, ACC elite, like tangent theta, like you know, I got Chad Heckler doing my barrels. I'm like, I gotta, you know, make sure that like the only thing that holds me back from winning these matches, like, is myself, right? It can't be like equipment's fault, that type of thing. Um and then so I started, yeah, two years ago on my first pro match was the short action customs, um, Blue Ridge, this one, um, 20 uh 24. Um, and then I just started shooting all the Washington matches, just hoping for an invite to the finale. Um, got my first one last year, started, you know, taking it a little bit more seriously, and you know, somehow this year, I don't know what happened. This match, it's crazy, like absolutely unbelievable. Literally, top three moments of my entire life. Um joke. You know, yeah, yeah. Won the match. No. Um that's awesome. What was what was your top finish before this? In a pro match, um, I'm always in like the teens. Um, I'm like probably if I say on average, like a low 90% shooter. Um and so I never would have expected to like be able to win this. Um, but you know, something magical like happened.
SPEAKER_04Um so what normally being normally being even in the teens, that's hard to do anymore. There's a lot of good shooters out there, so that's that says that you're you know, you're doing pretty well. So that's awesome. But then to jump up and get your uh get your first win without even being in the top ten ever? Wow. Good job.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So I mean what what what what about it? What about it? Like, did you know what click for you? Uh like how did you feel? I mean, did were you watching scores all weekend too?
SPEAKER_06Oh, it was um, yeah. So I guess I'll there's two questions, like the the scoring thing, and then like what happened, uh, what clicked this weekend for me. Um so I think this style match from from Sean was kind of that type of match, like no nonsense, like no bullshit um type of type of match where I typically do pretty well. Um and it's like you could do tripod rear, um, you could read Mirage extremely easily because it's heavy, heavy Mirage. Um what that means is like, oh, you can read the win conditions, right? But if you miss, you know, you might not see anything because it's there's so much Mirage. Um so just don't miss, right? And that's why I'm getting lucky. Um reading Mirage, not missing, um, and staying uh consistent with the mental game, which I think was uh a big thing for me. Um because actually last year's short action customs match, going into the second day, I'd only dropped one shot. And I was like, there's no way anybody is like be like, you know, and like of course Nick Garzi like didn't drop a single shot the first date. I'm like, okay, somehow I'm in second. Um and then mental game, like I second sec first stage, second day, dropped like four shots on the first stage. I was like, oh man. Um so uh and then in the finale, uh the Wisconsin barrel maker barrel run. I remember the name. I remember the name of that stage because it's like you have to hit to move on, like change elevation every target, and that just messed me up. I was like down six that. So it's just staying strong in the mental game, I think, with like a good squad, you know, positive squad, um being able to bounce ideas off each other and really confirm like all of my, you know, thoughts and plans was was the big one here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. Yeah, I don't I mean, with things as stacked up as it were, so you won it dropping 10 shots, Brian, Corson uh both dropping 11, and then Rick's was 13, and then from there on down, it just like takes off. So, like I mean, relatively uh you won the match, obviously, but to have that sort of gap, you know, through the top five says that you shot extremely well. Um I I'm not sure. Uh Nick Gadarzi was supposed to be at this match, but I guess got a did you give him appendicitis last week? No, no, thank good God he was not there, but yeah.
SPEAKER_06Everybody's like, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I did not give him that appendicitis last week. Yeah. I mean uh it looks, I mean, based on the standings, I mean, it probably would have been a shootout. It you know, he would have been up there, but you know, you shot extremely well. So uh what was the what were the conditions like, target sizes, that type of thing. We got a little bit of that out of uh out of Sean before the weekend, but maybe you can fill us in.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, it was it wasn't bad. Um it was like maybe a nine mile per hour average, I'd say, throughout the whole entire course. Um most of the stages were about I'd say 0.5 um mils, like half a mil wide. Um, so you had some like forgiveness. I will say what was crazy is that the skinniest targets, and they were like um, you know, 0.3 wide, yeah, was the last stage that I shot in the whole match, and I was the absolute last shooter of the match, and they're like, you need to clean um to win, and I'm like, Oh god, you know, and so uh it just ranged from mostly 0.5, but there's that one stage that's 0.3, and just happened to be the last one I needed.
SPEAKER_04Okay, that's pressure right there. So actually, you had to clean the last two stages to win. I was watching, right? Because Brian Lapina, he was only down, I think it was five, and then he had one stage left, and he dropped six on his last stage. Did I see that correctly?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's correct. Actually, yeah, so actually my score didn't update. Um so my squad just had yeah, my squad had a lot of new shooters, which which is great, right? Um, but we were moving like kind of slow. So we were like everybody was done, like except for this our uh me. Like I was the last shooter in the squad. Last year the squad, you know, all everybody's done. I already like people are like, yeah, Brian dropped like six. And then like people knew I cleaned like the last stage, um, or the previous stage, sorry. Um, and in my head, like uh I was like, Oh god, you know, like Yeah, everybody. Yeah, I was wondering, I was like, because at the beginning, I was like, why is there why are there so many people watching me? Right. Like I look back uh and then uh I'm slowly realizing that I'm like in a fight here for like you know the podium. I was like, I thought Brian was gonna win it all right, because up until that point, you'd only drop one all day. But all of a sudden there's like people watching me, and I'm just like, okay, I'm gonna set up my phone recording. So I have like the winning shot. Shish, my yeah, I I have the winning shot like posted on on Facebook, and it was crazy. It's like one of the, you know, I was saying top three moments. It's like, you know, you just hit the buzzer beater, and you know, I haven't felt this since like playing sports in school. So yeah, that is awesome. Heck yeah.
SPEAKER_01So what's uh what's the plan for the rest of this year? I mean, now you're on a heater, right? So you are you gonna travel outside the northwest? Are you gonna you're gonna come east? Um, maybe twisted barrel, that's what the finale's gonna be. If I get the invite for the twisted barrel, I'll I'll be going.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Okay. Yeah. So I have plans to do um at least the West Coast Redemption, which is um in Bend, it's uh the Oregon, it's Oregon's match. Um and then also um Carraje Windbreaker. So that's um Ghadarzi's match in Washington. So I'm staying local. Um try not to fly too much, trying to save um some money while I still can. And uh yeah. And then when I uh um hopefully get the invite to Twisted Barrel, um you'll see me at the at the finale, yeah.
SPEAKER_01You'll yeah. Uh let's take well, actually it would be here. Let's take a look at series, pro series. Um and if the scores have been accounted for how many matches have you shot so far?
SPEAKER_06This is my second, so I'll probably be uh barrel burner. I shot like a 94%.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you're at 190. Yeah. Yep. Yep. Yeah, you'll get the invite. I mean, if you if you shoot a a top teen or better, you're right there, especially with the way the scores are going this year. Yep.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, can't mess up the last two matches, hopefully.
SPEAKER_01You'll be alright. You'll be alright. Man. Oh, that's awesome. That's awesome. What um what's your practice look like? You know, for you to start in 2024 at this match, so basically two years for your first win, you know, the ha you have to be sending some rounds down range, right?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, most of my practice is at the 100-yard range, um, like 30 minutes from me. Uh, and it's just like recoil management since I started on 22, right? Which is the big difference. Um, sometimes I get to uh go out to like a range a couple hours from me, but I only do that maybe a couple times uh, you know, a year or maybe a few times a year. Um gas nowadays is like expensive, and my truck is like 10 miles per gallon of premium gas. And so it's like, you know, I don't 200 bucks to go out there and practice. Um not like not like too often. I'll basically practice recoil control, but um most of you know why I drop shots, right, it is wind. So that's really um I'd say where where I need practice and um when I'm trying to get get out to do more.
SPEAKER_01So how do you uh what do you what do you do for practicing wind? Anything? That's nothing. Sounds like you get notifications. Yeah, I try to shut that off. That's alright. Everybody knows.
SPEAKER_06Everybody knows I'm on the show and they're like, oh, what are you talking about?
SPEAKER_04Are you on the west side of Washington?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, I am. I'm about 15 minutes from Seattle. So over here it's pretty um pretty dense. And so we don't really get not a lot of not a lot of ranges. Yeah, so eastern Washington, like lead farm is is where I'll go as well. Shoot the local matches there. Um yeah, with like all uh the match that the Muns put on.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you beat uh Rick's mud was fourth, and oh boy, where's Spencer? I go past him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he wasn't. I think he's higher than too long.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. I must have been I thought it was oh yeah, it was eighth. Yeah, I I rolled right past him. Yep, they put on a pretty good match. I I would imagine that's good that's a good training ground for you. Like shooting with those guys on a monthly basis. Yeah. What's funny is both you and Nick Kadarzi said basically the same thing when we had Nick on after his last win, and it's like, I think I'm not gonna travel too far. Price of gas up here is really kicking our ass. You know?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, premium like almost six, it's like 580 or something. And I like I have like the um, I don't know if you guys like the Ram TRX. Oh my gosh. Yeah, so um no money left. Uh it's like, how much does gas cost? How much do Burger 109s cost? Oh man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yep. You can't drive Burger 109s, and you you know, you can't shoot premium fuel. So oh man. Yeah, I mean, I want to feel bad for you, but that's still a TRX. Man, that's awesome. Man, um, you need advice for somebody who's probably listening to this and they're in their first year or two. Like, what um what can you tell those folks about, you know, how to get to where you're at right now?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, the big thing I'd say I thought about this. I'd say uh I'd say consistency here is key. Like consistency in the mental game uh is really where I started to break through. Because you can have all of like the equipment. Like I shoot probably I probably shoot the heaviest dasher at that match. It's um 29 and a half pounds, you know, without a five bottom mag. So like overall, it's like 32 pounds, like loaded up. Um so you can have like all that stuff, but at the end of the day, I was still like shooting that stuff when I was shooting like 80%. Um, but what really gets you up there is consistency, you know, not dropping, like not having like a five, like a minus five stage. Um, I think this is one of the first matches where I didn't have like a minus five stage. Um and um staying strong like mentally. Uh so like making sure you don't make mental mistakes. I think maybe I made one like mistake where my bipod wasn't high enough the entire match, but even that's like a rarity for me. Yeah. Um so just staying consistent um in practice, staying consistent in vehicle control, staying consistent in execution, um, staying consistent in the mental game is really key here.
SPEAKER_01Ikea, Ike. That's awesome. What uh do you think shooting rim fire is uh is an adequate practice? I mean, if you're shooting a 30-pound dasher, that doesn't recoil any much different than a 22 long rifle, I'm assuming. I'll I'll be honest, it uh I'm it recoils a lot.
SPEAKER_06Um maybe it's because maybe because it's uh I I've been shooting too much um 22. Um, but I feel like there is uh a big difference here, at least that what I feel like the dash is still recoils, it's just why I like went from 25 to 30 pounds almost, um, just for that extra like stability and for like um tracking. Uh so even though it's like um I feel like 22 is good practice for like execution, you know, getting your time management like like down. Um in terms of like spotting, you know, dealing with 20 mile per hour winds, um, dealing with mirage at like 700 yards, you can't see anything. Um that's what kind of separates people at like kind of the higher levels of of center fire.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. That's awesome. Man. Uh it'll be it'll be fun to watch the picks the rest of the year because the classification systems, you know, don't update mid-year, right? Uh you're shooting like a pro shooter, obviously. Um, but you're kind of gonna be that guy that, you know, if we're doing a if we're doing a pick'em on a match, like you might get overlooked because it has mark or uh has semi-pro next year, and you'd be like that dark horse that people could select for a top five here, right?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. I mean, with the hybrid scoring, I hope I'm I'm a pro next next year. Um it's just like always shoot against Godarzi. Like every like one day matches, two-day matches. I'm like, oh, okay. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yep. That's good though. I mean, um, Jake Millard used to shoot against Godarzi all the time, you know, and was trained by Godarzi, and then all of a sudden Jake was winning all those matches up there. You know, that doesn't happen these days. I think you got a girlfriend in the job, and we haven't seen him. You know? Yeah. All right. Well, Mitchell, it's great having you on. Congrats on your first win, man. Hopefully they come easier now for you. And um, we'll stay tuned and and see uh see how the rest of the season treats you.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Thanks, Ken. Thanks, Rusty. Congrats.
SPEAKER_01I was out Rusty. What time is it there right now? 3 o'clock, I think.
SPEAKER_04No, it's six o'clock. No, it's not six o'clock, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Six o'clock your time. PM. Yep.
SPEAKER_04Six o'clock p.m.
SPEAKER_01Runar, what time is it there for you, buddy? It's 3 a.m. Thank you for joining us. I'm sorry, man. I might bless you, man. We'll we'll figure this out and and and as we uh as the EU Pro Series develops, um, we'll do more of these shows and we'll do it at a time that works for everybody. For sure. Yeah. It's possible. So yeah, we'll figure it out. Heck yeah. So let's talk about this. We got a couple matches uh this weekend and next weekend, right? What uh what are the details here?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, first we got Blackpool, Spain. Yep. Uh our director there, Javier Nieto. He's a super good guy, doing a good job. Yep. Uh I was lucky enough to join his match um like a month ago now, I guess.
SPEAKER_01I I don't know if that I would call that lucky enough. I mean, it's lucky because you got to leave Norway, which no there was still snow on the ground up there, right? Oh, yeah, a month ago.
SPEAKER_00Uh with us, with us. Further south, uh it's it's uh spring, but here is still snow.
SPEAKER_01So what I want to show, and we and Ru and I and I are joking about this earlier today, but Savurnus uh from Lithuania was at that match with you March 3rd, um and he took some really good photos. It rained buckets on you, didn't it?
SPEAKER_00Uh it rained leaned to the match, and on train up day, it was terrible. But on on the match itself, it was a little bit on Sunda uh Saturday, but the the field is like you see, it's just terrible. It's just muddy, mud, but butt. And this is clay mud. So it just sits on every gear, still all over my gear. We had to wash everything. So it's like, yeah. But uh, we got lucky on the match day, on the match itself, for sure. So yeah. Still smiling.
SPEAKER_01Still smiling. Well, Javier, I mean, he smiles all the time, but for sure. Uh and sirness. But yeah, I oh man, it looked like it looked like a disaster when I was following along. Um so this weekend's match, you can find it on Ultimate Ballistics, one of the one of the few places in the world that's still using Ultimate Ballistics. Um participants. And I guess squad one and squad two, is it is it kind of is it kind of squatted where they think the winner's gonna come out of one or two?
SPEAKER_00The international shooters or or the pro series shooters. He put those in squats one and two. Okay. And then the yeah, up up the ante there with uh uh dedicated RO and spotter. Okay. And while the other squads are a little bit, you know, more like um the regional matches or local matches that they squat themselves and more mixed shooters, uh, lots of Spangers. The again smiles all around, happy people all around. So it's it's a cool little area. It's actually our old fields, the uh uh airstrip that we shoot off of in the valley. So we all shot the same direction, uh over uh over uh like a field and then up a hill. And and um he did a great job on the match when I was there. I was super impressed, and I told him so as well. It was very well balanced uh from start to finish, very very level equal, uh no advantages for starting somewhere or didn't start somewhere, and yeah, he did a really good I was really impressed, actually. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I I I mean out of most of our European uh Pro Series matches, Javier, I think he he was one of the first to to really understand what it takes and how to get things done, and to be super cooperative with all the match directors in in country and and all of that, right? Like he he's he seemed to have gotten it, right?
SPEAKER_00Yeah. True from day one. When we explained our vision, he was on board. So and I've been trying to get down there for a year and a half, but it's always been something, and now I could make it, so and it was super fun. Awesome.
SPEAKER_01Well, let's talk about a few of the folks there. Uh squad one number one, Tom Mogle, right? I mean, he's um uh he'll be a contender in this match. Super, super good shooter, super nice guy. What's uh his dad Stefan, uh and he's from France. What's the uh what's the website that Stefan runs?
SPEAKER_00Um I think it's Tomgun, isn't it?org or something, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh boy, I alright, we're gonna try this live. I should never do stuff like this live, but tomgun.org. I'm just gonna put France in there and kind of hope. Tomgun.org. How about that? Um and this is this is pretty cool. Not sure how he's doing. I think he's scraping data from from different sources, but you could actually you can actually see live scoring as things are happening. Um somehow. I don't know.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But he does it in Europe and he he b piggybacks off the US matches and he even had the South Africa finale and all in there. Or Namibian, sorry, African finale. So um yeah. And uh it works for sure.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah, so this this is that same match, Black Bowl 2026, Tom and in uh squad one there, Joseph Six also in squad one. Uh it's awesome seeing him travel the world to to do this. Um Javier in there. Um any other Hugo, I think you mentioned earlier, right? Yeah, he had come to the uh Viking Trail last year.
SPEAKER_00Correct. Yep, Hugo and and um God, I'm gonna slaughter his name, Calabuik, or Philippe. He's second to the top, I guess. Jose, Philippe. Yeah, yeah. He's a he's a really solid shooter as well. Um and uh a couple of other Spaniards uh I saw it when I was down there, but I try to remember everyone's name, uh, but it's difficult, especially the Spanish names of solid Spanish shooters there. We saw it in squad one when I was there. Um and they they are mixed in the rankings as well, so they're doing a good job for sure. Uh also Dylan from France, he came last. Yeah, he was leading after day one last. Uh him and Cindra were fighting it out. Um That's right. That's right. So it's gonna it's gonna be a tough battle. It's not gonna be an easy win. I mean, we don't have a ton of names we know, uh, but the names that are there are solid. You know, like Seppo, of course, and then Dylan is shot like a machine uh last year. And Tom, of course, is is our cage cables, I guess.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, yeah, exactly. Exactly. Um we should see a lot of these folks um come to the world finale, right? I would assume. Rusty, you know all these names, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I've shot with them, but some of those names are so are so it's like I I recognize their faces. I recognize their names, but I couldn't put them together on a bunch of them.
SPEAKER_01Right. Yep. It's funny, the two Spaniards I really know are Javier and Javier.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so one name remember. I tell you what, that Joseph speaks around.
SPEAKER_00First time I met them was in Oh yeah, for sure. First time I met Javier and Javier was in the 23 finale in Kansas. And uh every hour was like Javier and oh, Javier and two, I guess. So it's pretty funny. Two Spaniards in the same squad and had the same name, so it's pretty funny. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I met Javier uh Menor uh the first was I think the 22 finale at KM and we were squatted together and had a great time. Had an awesome time. Um uh so let's talk about two weeks from now. Um or uh next weekend. What's uh what's coming up?
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man. Yeah. A week and a half we have Viking Trail. That is pretty that's a big one every year for in Europe. Um it's it's the sixth year we have it. Uh sadly, we don't do the three days anymore because uh ranges are getting scarce in Norway. Imagine that. But uh so we are we do do two days, but we do have the two badass ranges that we did did before when uh both Austin and all those guys were here, and you and Martin and all those guys. So it's it's gonna be Urbellan day one and race on day two. They're three hours apart, vastly different ranges.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00Uh but very similar in the way that we have a good mixture of you know long range and medium range stages between, you know, all day. And um yeah, it's it's sold out, uh, just over 90 shooters from I guess 20 countries.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00We have from the US, we have Brad Larson from Texas, we have Corey Haas from Loopholt. That's awesome. And we have uh Martin van Rutenberg from MTT, they're all joining from over there.
SPEAKER_01Um, that's awesome to hear Martin and Corey, uh Brad Larson that's coming over. I think Brad's uh Brad's early in his his PRS career, so he is I'm sure he'll listen to this. Good luck, Brad, when you're over there. I met him for the first time in Gravestone. Yep, him him and his son. Yep. Man, um how many how many total? You have 85 signed up? That'd be like.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but it's it's gonna climb just over 90. Some guys are aren't on the list, they don't have profiles there yet. So, but um, it's just over 90, 85 confirmed right there. Okay. Um and uh yeah, so it's gonna be it's gonna be great. It's uh it's a lot of and I hope now the long-term forecast is Friday. We're gonna have train up day on Friday on Yerpeland, so people can shoot a little bit more there. Yeah, yeah. That's new. That's new this year. Okay. And um, and uh the forecast right now for that day is calm. So we'll see what happens when it when it gets here. I'm hoping we'll get a normal day for once over there so people can really enjoy the that beautiful range.
SPEAKER_01Um we're too we're talking about the mountain range.
SPEAKER_00They're the mountain range, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And it's supposed to be calm. It's supposed to be calm. Yeah, if Clay is watching this or Austin, they're calling absolute bullshit right now.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, they're gonna they're they're streaming it at the screen, I guess.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, I don't think it can be calm up there.
SPEAKER_00No, yeah, a calm day there is still uh six to ten mile an hour wind. That's a calm day up there. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, but even then I'd be I I bet six to ten, and you're trying to do the math saying three to five meters per second or something, right? Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. But I bet uh just because of the way that's all shaped and the mountain, like there's no way that it can it can like go through that slow. Like it's gonna it's gotta be just with the big thing.
SPEAKER_00No, no, it speaks up different places and turns and twists and all that stuff. Yeah, yeah, yeah. You're right. Because it's it's nothing there, just the rock face ball we shooting. So um but again, it might be it might be the same as the last two years we've had it there. So I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yep. So how far away is that for you to go set up? Uh it's four and a half hours for us. Yeah. I mean most most of the way across the country? Yeah, across southern.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, we we now right now we live in uh smack in the middle of you know the the fatter lower part of Norway, I guess. We we're in the middle of the mountains there, um 800 meters above sea level in the mountains. So we drive all the way down to the southwest coast. That's where the first day is.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00And then go all the way to the southern coast, and that's where Riceland is. And that's a different race again. That's you know, woods, another small little pond, and we shoot different directions and all that stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yep. I thought Roceland was a lot like uh Wisconsin. It felt like Wisconsin and like the uh where we used to host the barrel maker and stuff, and you you got a little pond and stuff out there you're shooting across. And it it um and the wind was predictable, you know, it's pretty wooded and stuff, so you don't have a whole lot of wind, but small targets. Yeah. Um no, I that's exciting. Man, I I yeah some of my most fond memories of shooting were were there were there in Norway.
SPEAKER_00So that's good that's good to um yeah we're fortunate it is a popular match still and and uh yeah people from all over still travel to it so it's it we're fortunate there for sure. Yep. But we were the first one also to copy the US format of having lunch and all that stuff, you know. Good good decent price table, great price table. Um and uh and so we were lucky there and and now there's a fallout afterwards, so that's good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, I mean it's kind of a storied match too. I mean it's got a uh I mean it it it peep there's a ton of shooters here in the US that know about it, right? Because of you know just just the talking about it and people who've gone to it and are like, whoa, you know. Um let's uh so while we have the d our international director on the horn, let's talk a little bit about uh European Pro Series and and some of the plans coming up and and and what it's gonna look like for the next uh year and a half or so, especially with uh partners and whatnot.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, it's it's it's heating up over here, man. We have uh just in we have the schedule for 26 out, and it's 20 matches in 11 countries, all the way from Iceland to Georgia and top of Sweden to Spain, everywhere in between. Um people are uh really traveling to these matches, like you saw in Spain. It's not uh it's not a ton of shooters, but it's always you know between five and twenty-five or even more and not you know more central places and certain times of the year, obviously. Um the matches are really the quality is really uh rising. They're all understanding it now, they've all traveled, all experienced good matches. So so if you go to a pro match, uh you're 99% sure getting a good match while you use your money to go to that match. Right. And we have the same sport existing now. We do it over two years in Europe because you know we don't have the same accessibility to matches, um you know, funding, travel, vacation. The sport is a little bit younger, so we adjusted to that this time. Yeah, we can always go back to one year if it suits, if so suits. But people shooters and MDs, directors were all happy with this change. So and I'm first I was like, no, no, no, we're doing this every year. But then I was like, wait a minute, and we talked about it, we were like, yeah, it makes sense. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01They spread it across two years, and then you get more vacation. You know, you wind up with a couple more three hundreds going into the finale, but I bet I bet we don't have more. Yes, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. You'll have a have a little larger field, but I I bet you don't have more than three or four three hundreds. No, what do you think?
SPEAKER_00I doubt it. I doubt it. Yeah. Um it's and and that's also just because uh the guys who are traveling the most that can actually get 300 aren't that many yet. Right. So so it's good, and it's it's still a feat to get that over here. So uh but it is increasing. You can see the you know, we have the four or five of Norway who go to everything, same sweep in Denmark we see all over the place, the UK guys. So it's it's it's a it's a decent group for the sport as it is right now, and it will only increase.
SPEAKER_01So it's exciting. It's exciting. And um, man, I hope uh I hope Martin and Corey, you know, NBT and Liverpool, I hope they have a great time over there. Um it'll be it'll be an eye-opening uh experience. I mean, uh the Viking Trail is one of the hardest matches. Uh, but hopefully, you know, similar experience to what I had. I mean, when you start to meet all the shooters and you have a lot of countries represented, a lot of people traveling to come come visit you, and and and those guys realize like, yep, it's it's just like it is in the US and Canada. Uh it's the same people, a little different accent, you know, but we're we're all come from the same class.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, and same goals and the same, you know, if you if you bag breaks, you can borrow a bag, everything is the same. That's the fun part about it. And and and uh there there are a lot of guys it's who think it's super scary traveling over here and and and uh like like a lot of guys in the US still don't realize that you can actually use your score from here in the US. But getting uh a hundred here is not free anymore. We have some good serious to uh we're actually traveling over to you guys getting hundreds now, so it's uh it's a different game from a couple of years ago.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_00But um uh it's it's it's getting really exciting over here with all the matches and and people understanding what we've been trying to build, what we pushed for so long, and and um and that's super cool. Yeah, heck yeah. More of us join the impact now for the live scores over here as well.
SPEAKER_01We'll be able to watch uh we'll be able to watch your match on impact, right?
SPEAKER_00Impact for sure, for sure, yeah. Awesome. I'm gonna add it now. I had to have one of that platform because it connects to the Norwegian series. Yep. Uh which I'm hoping also changed. I'm hoping they'll go to Impact Square with the whole series in the end, and that is the goal. But um and uh but we'll I'll I'll put the match on impact and and teach the uh show the guys, Laurels, how to run it and do live scoring there. So yeah, it'll be pretty simple.
SPEAKER_01It's pretty it's a pretty easy, yeah. It's pretty easy. And then we get to watch and like well, wake up first thing in the morning and check scores, right? Or watch it live.
SPEAKER_00I mean, you you can stay off. You're a big boy. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Well, you gotta get up early. You gotta get up at three o'clock your time to watch it. Oh, actually earlier. Yeah. No, that's awesome. Man, Runar, I appreciate you coming on. I appreciate you getting out of bed and talking with us. My pleasure. Uh yeah. Anything else uh you want to leave us with?
SPEAKER_00No, I just uh I I know a lot of the uh goal for a lot of the MDs over here is to get guys from the US to join the matches. They think that is super fun. Um it's it's kind of uh like a stamp on your match. Uh and I know all of those guys, all of the MDs, and and it's always a common goal. They hope for some from someone from over there to join them. I mean you went to Iceland last year and you saw uh yeah, the atmosphere over there is the same again, you know, but still different via different country scenario, but still a still a good mess. We had the same instinct. Yeah, but uh, we have been crazy, but it was a great mess. Yeah, the course of fire was really good. So now Spain, I've tested Spain, I know Italy is good, I know Denmark is good, you know. So it's it's getting really cool, man. And all these guys are shooting worlds and all that stuff, so it's all the same community. Um, it's okay.
SPEAKER_04I was I was just gonna say there's there's several guys that have come over here for like five, six weeks at a time. Like uh Joseph Sixth, I think it was last year, he came over, brought his, I don't know, maybe he was here all summer, but he brought his whole family, and then Maureats saw him a couple of weeks ago. He's over here shooting five or six matches. And uh it's like if you're gonna go over to uh somewhere over there to Europe, it'd be nice to be able to hit a few. I mean, it's a long trip, right? It'd be nice to be able to hit at least a couple of matches. Um yeah, I'll have to look at that schedule. But do they have like two in a row where you could go like one one weekend and one another? Or are there that many matches?
SPEAKER_00Exactly. Uh as of right now, we don't have a lot of those. We have a couple or double on the same weekend, but this would have been a good trip to Spain this weekend, the Viking Trail the weekend after, you would have to have a hell of a trip.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we need to we need to plan something like that last year. Plan scheduled where there's two good matches, Viking Trail and something else, right? One after the other, make it worth it going over there.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, yeah, yeah, for sure. So that's something that's easy to do for sure. So that'd be awesome. Uh another but also international. I mean, you know, Morgan King was in New Zealand now, early. Yeah, a couple of weeks ago, and they're also gonna start their own pro series between Australia and New Zealand.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00With matches going back and forth with their own finale, they're gonna bake it into their respective series. They're also getting the incentive to travel a little bit. And also if an American or European is down there or makes a trip down there for a match, you can use your score at home.
SPEAKER_01You can won so that also that that would have been Patty, like Patty Young's went down to Australia uh it may have been last summer, the summer before, and he won a match down there. And like that if that was a pro match, it'd be a hundred points for him. Yeah, you know. Um speaking of down there, Frazier McKenzie, uh, yeah, speaking about somebody dedicated to the US Pro Series, uh, when I was at Twisted Barrel a few weeks a few weeks back, he's got a truck and a and a uh fifth-wheel camper there, and that's his home base. Like he he like he'll fly into Little Rock and then go shoot matches, you know, drive and camp. He's from New Zealand. It's cool. I I mean imagine doing that to like Australia or New Zealand, like if they were full of matches. Right. Like how awesome would be that be, Rusty. That would be so cool.
SPEAKER_04I mean, you know, do the vacation thing for the whole week and then just drive over to the next match, shoot the match, go do some vacationing. I mean, that's been on my bucket list is New Zealand and Australia, so that'd be awesome.
SPEAKER_03And mine too, for sure. Right? Yeah, it's amazing places.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, we've had we've had a decent number of US shooters make it over. I think Derek Warren, did he shoot Viking Trail last year? Yeah, he shot Viking Trail last year.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_00We had issues last year with ranges, so we actually, that's the uh most normal match we've had. We had two days at Roceland that year. That's right. Yeah, so it was it was a lot of stuff going on with both ranges and us because of the new range we took over and all that stuff. Um I'm actually hoping next year we'll do three days again. That is the plan. But then we would do it up in Horden, so you might actually shoot like Roceland in the spring with the tree started to blossom, and then you go right to the snow in Hovden and shoot a little bit. So it's off to a Viking test, I guess. Yep, yep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Man, yeah. So if you're a US shooter and you're looking for a heck of an experience, um man, I think you can really pick any of those matches and you're gonna have a great time. Like, you know, Italy last year. Italy, I I was I mean, it was hotter than hell there in June uh for the European Pro Series Championship. But I mean that that's a 1200 acre range in Italy. Um in like the uh Tuscany region. Um it's a completely beautiful piece of property, and you and you it's almost unimaginable that you would think like this is a European piece of property that we're in the middle of and we could shoot, shoot like this. It's crazy. Uh Iceland is unreal, like Norway is unreal. I I I don't know. I think I think more more US shooters should probably give it a shot and go go try. It's not hard to get into these places with a rifle either.
SPEAKER_00So no, the MDs are super helpful. They do everything for you and a little bit more, so it's like yeah, it's not it's not hard. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Man. Awesome, Runar. Thank you for coming on this morning with your time. I'm gonna go back to sleep now. Good night, Runar. Good night. Good night. Good luck, and good luck next week. Thank you. What's your what's your favorite dead animal on a wall? Probably yeah. What's your favorite dead animal? I'm gonna ask it that way.
SPEAKER_03Oh, that's tough.
SPEAKER_01Um There's a whole bunch that are outside the view of Bobby C.
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah. I mean, I'm looking up the mule deer. I don't know. That's so hard. I got some really good bulls, some really good archery bulls that are those gotta be top, but then I got some 200-inch bucks at archery that I don't know. It's hard to say a favorite animal, dude. I've got some really good stories, so.
SPEAKER_01Well, what about a favorite hunt? Is that easy?
SPEAKER_04Or that's dude, I'll tell you what. One of my favorite hunts, and you're gonna laugh, but one of my favorite hunts was an archery hunt in Unit 10 in Arizona where I didn't kill a bull. I spent the whole two weeks chasing this ghost bull that I found before the season started, and uh he was like uh 410, 415 typical 7x7. And I saw him before the hunt, and I'm like, nothing but him. I mean, I was passing up. You're gonna laugh at this, but there was a 395 bull that I'm like, I'm not going after him.
SPEAKER_03I'm waiting for that monster. Anyway. You didn't get him. I didn't get him. Did you ever see him again?
SPEAKER_04Never saw him again.
SPEAKER_03Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04I don't know, I don't know what happened to him, but I should have shot that 395, that's for sure. But anyway, no, I had a bunch of guys with me. Um, two of us had tags, and uh my buddy my buddy tagged out. I was with him when he did. But uh it was it was just the funnest hunt. Some fun guys and uh action every day, big bulls, and just never killed, but it was probably the most fun I've ever had on a hunt.
SPEAKER_03That's cool. Yeah, that is cool.
SPEAKER_01Right on. Speaking of big bulls, Dan Bernogini's with us.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, sorry I I messed up joined early. Oh, you joined, you popped in like a creeper just creeping. I was wondering. Just making sure Rusty was was acting right.
SPEAKER_04Well, you can never depend on me. No. So Dan, what have you been up to? You've been you haven't been busy, have you?
SPEAKER_02No, is is so you want me to be in landscape and not portrait? Is this good?
SPEAKER_01Oh landscape. Why wide mode? Yeah, okay, good. We're recording, we're recording right now, by the way. It's fine now.
SPEAKER_02Oh, that's fine. I mean, this we're talking.
SPEAKER_01So yep. Yep. Yeah, what have you been up to? Answer us today.
SPEAKER_02I mean, just every um uh it's it's been good. I mean, as soon as like the match is flowing, I always get stressed at this point, just making sure like every last detail is good. And yeah, and then I don't know if Rusty brought it up yet, but but uh I was on an e-dirt bike uh last weekend. Oh no. Uh last week and last week. Uh oh, it was last week, and um, because Brandon loves to ride them, anyways. We were setting up targets and stuff, and those things have so much torque. And I just like my hand just like slipped off the brake a little bit, hit the throttle, and tried to ride it out, but that didn't happen. And it just came down and smashed my leg. And um, so I just fractured my fibia. I don't know, up by the knee. It's pretty serious, it's pretty mild, but uh so yeah, good timing. I mean, it's just a great decision making riding that before the match. So yeah. Oh man. So, anyways, we were hobbling around the mountain or the hills, just uh yeah, it's fun setting up targets like setting up targets with a broken leg. Nah, it's fractured, not broken. Uh okay.
SPEAKER_01I I'm not sure I know a difference. Right.
SPEAKER_02I'm uh uh yeah, I'm I'm just medicated like Tiger Woods right now. So oh buddy.
SPEAKER_01Uh anyways.
SPEAKER_03Um yeah, just back home.
SPEAKER_01Oh, go ahead. I was just saying, we're excited to come see, man. I this is my first match shooting in California. Um ever. I head out, yeah. First match I've shot in California. Yeah. Wow. Pretty sure. Yeah. No suppressors, right? I am SOT. Does that matter? Can I get away with it?
SPEAKER_02I well, I mean, I can't they can't.
SPEAKER_04You can shoot suppressors in California. You just got an SOT, go for it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I man, I'm not gonna mention what break. So I I'm getting a sportsman division rifle ready, right? There's 25 of us coming to this match. I love seeing that. That's a pretty good sized division.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Rusty included. Um man, I and I've shot a decent I've shot a lot suppressed. Um, but I've also shot a lot with brakes, and I I try to break this is like two weeks ago when I was just like making sure this rifle's dialed in, which clay made all my ammo and it for this rifle, like it shoots flat out. And and I um I had a brake on there that I I was shooting under a cover, and I'm like, nope. Um like it it just like almost like it was just concussive, you know. Really? Yeah, so I ended up I end up going with an ace brake, and and that sounds it sounds better to me. It doesn't like blast me in the face, but we'll see. Yeah, I'm not gonna mention the brakes.
SPEAKER_02The new ace brake.
SPEAKER_01Uh it's not new. No, it's one I pulled out of the drawer.
SPEAKER_04It's probably but yeah, it's probably a year too old, but God, those are those ace brakes, they're not they're not too loud. Some of those brakes, and like say you won't mention brands, but holy crap, they're loud. I mean, some of them are effective, but I can't spend those loud brakes, especially undercover.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I th it may have been the undercover thing. I've shot this brake in a bunch of other conditions, and it is flat. Like you pull the trigger on a six-bipe creed and you don't move half a mil. You know, I mean it just straight back. It is sick, yeah. But it just hit me wrong, and I'm like, I I don't think I can do it. You know. But California, I'm not gonna risk it. Either SOT or not, I'm I'm just gonna run a break. You know, and I don't want to be different than anybody else either. Like that's that's not cool either. So if nobody else is running suppressors, I'm not gonna run suppressor.
SPEAKER_02But some people with SOTs might be there, so well.
SPEAKER_01I'm not judge, jury, police, whatever. I'm not saying that's not me. Me either. Yeah. Yeah. Um so this weekend, and we didn't even say the name yet. 2026 MDT Hunter Challenge. Um that's that been the name of your match for a while, right? Your Hunter match last year was the same thing, right? MDT Hunter Challenge.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think since for the last five or six years, yeah, that was the original name that we named it. And uh pretty or maybe the first year was like the JC Hunter Challenge, but um Okay. Can't remember, but it's at least from the second match on, I wasn't for sure of that.
SPEAKER_01So Yep. Yep, we have yeah, just scrolling down 115 signed up.
SPEAKER_02Um I think more. Well, we're gonna have more with ROs and everything. I think that might be the keys. I I think we have like 130 something, but that's like that's kind of where I put the cap at just because um, you know, with everything new, just wanted things to kind of flow a little bit, you know, with more manageable size of match than just like going all out.
SPEAKER_04So now this the place that you're gonna have at this time, that's the place that you had your original one, right? Back when Jake was co-directing with you. Yeah, I was at that match. That was that's a really cool place.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, it's a cool, it's a cool venue. Um, weather's looking great. Um, it's it's normally, like I said, it's normally super green, but we had a really hot March, so it's like half green, half like you know, brand brown now, but it'll it'll the weather will still be nice, so yeah.
SPEAKER_01Heck yeah. Um one thing to mention here on impact scoring, uh we have two new columns, Power Factor and Rifle Weight. And we have three new columns in handicap. So that's what you've been working on, Dan. Yeah, yeah. Bill's been working on Bill, right? Bill Tinkup. Yep. Bill Tinkup pulled that together. So uh a couple factors that go into this, right? And and we'll by the way, we have a new Facebook page, Pursuit Now. Um we'll yep, we'll get that up. We're gonna be put posting a lot on there, obviously tagging PRS and all that. But um, hopefully by the end of the weekend we have at least a thousand followers on that page, and uh the the plan is just to grow that thing like crazy. Um Britt Tin Cup, Bill's uh Bill's sidekick and daughter here, is gonna be at the match. She's gonna be putting a bunch of content out there, so that'll be cool. Stay tuned. Um, but this is this is a cool format, right? We have power factor, rifle weight, handicap. Can you give us the uh the layman's version real quick on what that what all that means?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so for the I mean, for all the divisions, apparently, you know, basically, but especially like the open and the overall, like, you know, we wanted to, you know, allow have one division and one like prize table walk and whatnot, but uh open it up to more more rifle setups, but also incentivize more hunting style rifles. Um so everything from like a 223 up to 300 Norma um can make it. And like the 6 5 Creed is 25 Creed, it's kind of like the baseline, um, neutral point where you're not really gaining or losing any points, but up or down from there, you're gaining or losing points. Um for your power factor, and then up and down from 13 pounds, you're gaining or losing points for your weight, too. So and it just incentivizes, like I said, guys to bring basically everything they want on the rifle, but you know, make it as lightweight as possible. So yeah.
SPEAKER_04So your your range is from is it eight to seventeen pounds or nine to seven pounds?
SPEAKER_02Nine, yeah, nine to seventeen. Seventeen is the cap, other than like the guided division, is just any, there's no restrictions. But um, nine pounds, obviously, you can come under nine, you just won't gain any extra points. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01All right. Under a nine-pound rifle, I have hope I would hope that's two three.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, that's the thing. And then um, you're not uh over the power factor max and under the power factor minimum, you just won't you'll just cap out at those two, you know, extremes essentially. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01So what is um if I came in with a super light uh high power factor rifle, what is the most points I can earn in handicap before the match starts?
SPEAKER_04So is your 300 Norma that's nine pounds? What uh what do you gain in there? Seven points. Seven points.
SPEAKER_01All right, yeah. Start out with seven impacts.
SPEAKER_02Which I don't think anybody's gonna be there. I know Dane's gonna be close, but um he'll probably be out. Yeah, he's I think he's around 10 pounds, but um, so he should be around six points. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that just sounds so brutal to me. Like you know. I mean, what's the total round count?
SPEAKER_02I'm assuming uh it'll be eight rounds max per stage, um, and 17 stages now, and then um I'll have to do the math on the 130, 140 max. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's a lot of 300 Norma in a 10-pound rifle.
SPEAKER_02Well, and it's and most of the time, like especially if you hit everything, you'll you'll shoot, you know, half of that e-ish. Um, but there are some a couple stages to where you're shooting all the the round count per that stage.
SPEAKER_01So can can you imagine squared up on a 275-yard prairie dog? And yeah, if you don't hit, where where did it go? Right? I mean, you by the time you're back in the scope, there's just dirt everywhere. You're like, well, try it, try left instead of right. I don't know. You know, hopefully straight up. Hopefully you're not, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But if you flinch, I don't know. And I'm and I've proofed the prairie dogs with my 300 Norma too. So um how did it go? How did it go? I mean, we I switched a couple to I I had some different ones. We were trying little prairie dog poppers, so we switched out some because it just like it blew it up through. No, I just like hit it, bent the steel, and then flipped the whole thing upside down. Uh yeah, I mean it was pretty violent. So we're gonna try, yeah. That's that's the only thing. It's just and every everything else, all the other steels should be good. Uh protectors on basically all the targets that need them. I mean, uh knock on wood. I'm not gonna say it, but like I'm hoping to be smooth through the whole match.
SPEAKER_04So can can you put Dane in a squad behind us so that he's destroying the steel after we've already shot?
SPEAKER_02Dane's shooting RO day, so Oh no.
SPEAKER_04So you'll be able to replace everything.
SPEAKER_02Okay. Yeah, the match was safe.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yep. Uh but um, and then we could talk about some stages really quick. So we are switching it up a little bit, and and Rusty's been very helpful. Like he's probably tired of me asking him questions, and it's been great bouncing ideas off of him. Um, but uh because yeah, this is just a new system. So we, you know, we we we want to make it go as smooth as possible. But um two, you know, a lot of the stages will be the two points for the first hit, one point for the second, and then move on from there if you don't hit anything. Um, but then there are some stages where like two of them will be these animal vital zones. And so the first round um impact on a vital is three points and move on to the next target. Uh if you miss the vital but you hit the animal, it's one point, but you also have to re-engage that target again because it's like a wounded animal almost. Um, so you re-engage it, and regardless if you hit the vital or not, on that second shot, it's another point, and then you move on to the next target. So if you hit the if you hit the animal or the or the vital. If you hit the animal or the vital, yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01So you get a point though.
SPEAKER_03You get a point. So yeah, you would Yeah.
SPEAKER_02So basically if you hit the animal both times, regardless, you're two points and you move on. Um but if you if you miss the animal on the first shot completely, and then you re-engage and you hit it, then it'd only be a point one point, and then you would move on.
SPEAKER_01So if you hit the vitals, you get two and you move on.
SPEAKER_02Uh well, you get three on the first round on the third shot.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Okay. Okay.
SPEAKER_02I was we could make it more realistic, but it just it I had to simplify it to be a little bit less complicated.
SPEAKER_01Um, so I think so I think simple is good, at least to get this off the ground, right? I mean, like you're you kind of figure out what works, what doesn't work. For sure. We make sure the scoring system is gonna work appropriately, all the things, you know.
SPEAKER_02Um, another scenario stage, which we're gonna do a f a couple of is uh multiple glassing points, which was Rusty's idea. Um boy. To where no, I and I really like this like this concept. So you basically get to the first glassing shooting area, find find the first two targets, range them, engage them, and then after those two are done, then you move up or move over to the second position to where now the third target is exposed to where you couldn't see it in the first position, find it, range it, engage it.
SPEAKER_01So that is cool. Yeah, that is cool.
SPEAKER_02I think that'll be fun.
SPEAKER_01That's a good idea.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, we uh go ahead.
SPEAKER_01When I was when I was hosting matches uh here in Wisconsin, we we did that with a few f a few times where from this position, you you only see these targets, and then once you get in this other position, you see them. And I think I mean it's an added stressor. Yeah. You know. Um, I already could see me freaking out on the clock, you know, just uh what you know. We'll see. We'll see how it goes.
SPEAKER_02And if people hate it, they can blame it on Rusty. Oh man.
SPEAKER_04Like I told, like I told him earlier today, man, just don't feel any pressure. But if you screw this matchup, it's like the pursuit is just gone.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, don't say that. Don't say that. Oh man. I think I think this would be fun irregardless. I think uh I think my the the most uh exciting thing for me out of this is for us to go back after the match and analyze, okay, what was the rifle system, power factor, rifle weight, how did they finish, right? And we can start building this chart out that, you know, now obviously skill level plays a huge part of that, but we should be able to see like where everybody kind of landed and you know what does the what does the equation look like, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, especially and then um I I think it was obviously some good payouts for sportsmen, so that's gonna be also pretty heavy too, but it it'll be nice to see where the rest plays out.
SPEAKER_01So I I kept telling Megan uh twice today, I'm like, remind me, remind me, I gotta bring, I gotta bring the checks. So I have checks that I have I have with me. Yeah, exactly. Don't forget the checks. I have I I have them pulled aside. We're gonna pay out the top three sportsmen. So yeah.
SPEAKER_04So I had a I had a question. Now, the the sportsman, if you shoot in sportsman division here, your points count toward the PRS center fire. Pro Series points. Yeah, is that a one-off or is that all the time on this? Are you thinking about doing that? What are you thinking?
SPEAKER_01So that's an encouragement for folks to come to this match, right? And that's that's the link that we're trying to make. Um I I do see a future where we can do that, though, where there's that crossover, and then hopefully we we have like a top sportsman for for the year. You know, we pick whatever the later later finale is, which I think would be the pro series finale, and we do some award there that uh acknowledges the the the guy who carried you know true sportsman points from pursuit and then sportsman points from the pro series and uh you know and and crown that guy get the Rusty Ulmer award, right?
SPEAKER_03Whatever.
SPEAKER_01Yep, we'll see. But yes, yeah, that is that is what the future state looks like, you know. We'll get through the test match and see how things go. And um, but I I love that. And that uh that's one of the things I'm most proud of with this whole thing. And that wasn't even an idea of mine. I think Dan, you called and you said, Hey, I here's what I'm thinking for handicaps and stuff, and we're gonna use BRS Sportsman for the the baseline. And it's like, man, that's a great idea. And I can't thank you enough for you know bringing that crossover into this. That was that was awesome.
SPEAKER_02I mean, gotta whenever you can't you have the chance to kind of do that, I think it plays well. And I think it plays well into that division because that's kind of what it was designed to do, too. So 100%.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it's supposed to be a rifle system that you know a lot of folks can compete with and then go out with.
SPEAKER_03You know.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but no, I'm excited for this weekend and see how everything kind of plays out. And um, yeah, I know a lot of other people from around the country are pretty excited to see how it goes too.
SPEAKER_04So now, Dan. Yeah we've we've talked we talked about you and I have been on the phone with time, but uh we talked about some of the some of the rules and how we wanted some of this to go. And I know you were gonna send out an email to all the shooters, but did you want to talk about any of that stuff or just send that email out?
SPEAKER_02Or I don't know if you want to go over any of it. And yeah, and I did send that email out um or already. Hopefully you guys got it.
SPEAKER_01Uh 2026 MD Hunter Challenge. Yep. Mass check-in, zero range location. How far is it from Arbuckle? That's where I got a hotel.
SPEAKER_02Oh, you got a hotel in Arbuckle?
SPEAKER_01I did.
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_02No, I was just gonna say I don't think there's anything to say there aren't enemies.
SPEAKER_01Um oh no, what's the name of the uh Woodsum? Williams Granzellas? Oh, maybe it's Williams. Man, I am out of my out of my league right now. I think it might be Williams. Does that sound right 10 minutes away from Arbuckle?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, uh it's about 10 10 to 12 minutes, uh 15-ish to the actual match, like the the gates of the property. That's awesome. That's easy. Yeah, okay. It's pretty, pretty easy. Um yeah. Uh that yeah, so that email, uh, that just covers some, and then there was an attachment in there for like the kind of the updated rules. Um couple of things that you know, Rusty and I were talking about is just you know, making some practical changes to like current formats and whatnot. And just like, you know, we're start, we're gonna start obviously throughout the whole match, when you're not shooting, it's gonna be um chamber flags in and just for an added layer of safety. Um and then um we're gonna start guys with, you know, once they come up to the starting position, essentially, it's gonna be chamber flag out, mag in. Um, and then they're gonna start with the mag in, essentially. Um we're I'm not gonna have guys run up super far, so that's not gonna be an issue. Um, I I'd like to start guys pretty close to the actual glassing position. Um and also we're just like, hey, because how you hunt is like sometimes your gear's not stowed, especially when you're pursuing an animal or you're already on one. So it's just like, and with with modern tech and like how you attach certain things on on your body and your pack, like we're just like, dude, as long as you can either have it in your hand, carry it, however, you just have to bring all your gear with you. Um you can have your all gear in hand, you can have your tripod in hand as well, as long as it's you know collapsed. Um we did the bipod thing, so you can have the bipod folded down or deployed essentially. Um, it just has to be in its shorted pos shortest position, and that's also kind of like a safety thing to where now they can just run up and put the rifle down without having to like fumble anything. So yeah. Cause we used to do it. I mean, good shooters currently do it like while they're moving up, running up anyway. So it's really not that much difference, but it just one little added kind of feature. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01So you're telling me I need to be extending my bipod legs as I'm coming up.
SPEAKER_02You can.
SPEAKER_04You can yeah, you can have them, they're already deployed, but if you want them longer, but you don't know what you know, you don't know what you need until you get there. So just so that it's deployed already, so that you can set your gun down when you get there and you don't have to worry about it, and then you'll figure out later on, and you can raise them if you need to, typically.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02So um a couple other little minor changes, but um for the most part, it's it's similar, but there are some like tweaks and everything that uh we feel are gonna be more applicable to to what we want to do. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Awesome. Awesome. We should publish these somewhere outside of this email. Are they attached? Are they attached to the match? It's an attachment, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh I don't know if I I'll have to see if I could do it on impact itself.
SPEAKER_01I think I for some reason I'm thinking you can attach a document to the match. Um I think. But that would be good for you know for those that uh want to play at home this weekend. Yeah, which is too bad. Um there's lots of opportunity to get into this match. I mean, it's fairly full now, but um we are, like you mentioned, there's a payout for top sportsmen at 6'5 Creed, 13 pounds or less. Um we're gonna have 10 grand, five grand going to the winner, three grand to second place, two grand to third. We have a lot of partners that have helped chip in on this. Um I could try to name them all. I'm just gonna name Silence Eco as a as the number one. They're really excited about this. A lot of their market is is hunting, and they're looking to really get behind us uh this match and the pursuit match. Um so we have, like I said before, we have 25 sportsman division shooters in there. Rusty, what it for hunter matches, what do you what caliber do you typically shoot?
SPEAKER_046'5 Creedmore. Well, you have to have no. I've I've shot 6'5 Creedmore and 25 Creedmore. For this one, obviously, I'm shooting 6'5 Creedmore.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. You're not gonna try to game it on us and and show up with a 25 Creed and be like, no, no, no. Well, if you weren't on my squad, maybe, but I think you'd check my ammo. Oh man. Um yeah, it's cool.
SPEAKER_03Obviously, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_01I'm obviously shooting sportsman here. Jason Alwis, uh, he's a he's a big PRS guy. Um also shooting sportsman. Um look at Anthony White Chules is a sportsman division shooter as well, uh, from from PRS. Yeah, I mean he he this is I'm sure right up his alley because he's been shooting sportsmen now for about a year and a half, two years, and um, and doing hunter matches. So like he's he is the guy, like he's the crossover guy that we're looking for. And I'm sure there's lots more in here, too. You get you have any local guys here that you recognize in a shooting sportsman?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, there's there's several local guys that and then like Buck, he he's always dangerous too. So I I Buck's very uh very easily win it. So Okay.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02There is any guy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, jinx him. Buck, I call jinx I call for Buck to win this. You're I think you're the one with the target back. Yeah, man, yeah. Every time I shoot a match, you guys call on, oh yeah, I think Rusty's gonna win. It just jinxes me. So we'll just stop, please. Buck is gonna win. I'm putting my money on Buck.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, me too. Okay. Now, now obviously to walk away with sportsman money, but what uh the overall match, you think, too? You do we think?
SPEAKER_02Do we think that the I think, yeah, I I think that whoever wins sportsman's probably gonna win overall too. But I don't know. I mean, Dank Dane could just, you know, wreck shop with the 300 Norma, and then he's got the handicap, you know. So I d I don't know. Um, but somebody with sportsmans could come in, you know, they bring a heavier bullet um for the 6'5 and then make their rifle nine or 10 pounds, and then they're getting a few points too. So yeah. Yeah. Um I don't know. It'll be interesting to see how it plays out. Uh, but yeah, it's it's gonna be it's gonna be good.
SPEAKER_01What uh uh Rusty, let's talk about your rifle setup. How are you right there at 13 pounds? Are you gonna be do you have your rifle together yet?
SPEAKER_04Dude, I put it together this morning. So I got the chassis in the mail yesterday from MDT. They sent me a CRBN because I decided I'm gonna shoot my Tika. So my Tika was always my factory rifle in the Hunter in the NRL Hunter. And the thing is a laser. I'm like, man, I sure wish I had a carbon. So I talked to Ryan McLean and he's like, oh, we'll send you one. So I got it yesterday, after today. I I betted it last night. I broke it out this morning and finished it all and went and shot it this morning, and it it sh it shoots so good. So good. Okay, but anyway, so it's a tikka. So the the barrel channel on this uh on the CRBN is about an inch and a half, and I got this little pencil barrel going through it. Are you serious? And the Tika, it's a fluted barrel. But anyway, um I was really trying to uh to make weight with my collis, but I I just couldn't do it. So I'm shooting a uh a loophole.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Mark5.
SPEAKER_04Um 525 Mark 5, Mark 5, and uh it's what I've always shot for Hunter 2. Anyway, um Antika and a CRBN and yeah, that's with an Axis Works Break, the 140 VLD hunting.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_04I know I'm not it's not a heavy bullet, but this this Tika this Tika doesn't like heavy bullets, it really likes the 140, so that's the 140 elite hunter. No, it's a VLD hunting. It's not the Elite Hunting.
SPEAKER_02You're VLD shit. Yeah, you're old as dirt. So I mean I that doesn't surprise me.
SPEAKER_04Dude, it's the first bullet I ever shot in it, and it's like, man, it likes this, so I just stuck with it, you know. I don't change 10 bullets. Yeah. What did I do to you to piss you off today if we got no no nothing?
SPEAKER_02Honestly, you've been you've been super helpful today. So that broken leg is making you salty. That's my love language, it's just you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_03Don't I know it? Yeah, yeah. They're good at it.
SPEAKER_04Uh something. How about you? What can Ken, what's your what are you shooting?
SPEAKER_01Um uh this is uh first match shooting Clay's ammo, and he made me 156 A uh no. Yeah, 156 A tips, right? 156. Yes. 153s. What am I missing here? Well, I'm just having a brain fart here. But yeah, the 65 Green one uh with the with the heavy A-tips. Um it is how how fast are you going? I think it's 2600, like right on the nose.
SPEAKER_03Um so it should be it should be like right at that adequate hour factor. Um precision.
SPEAKER_01I mean, I can't tell you if that's a CRB or if it's a um Artline Barrel, Mark V. Uh it's in uh foundation Ezekiel or hybrid, I don't remember which. I don't know, yeah. Uh and then I have the MDT mountain bipod on there, um, which is pretty sturdy. That's the only thing that I'm like really nervous about here is like having you're gonna be sitting off the tripod a lot.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was gonna say that's a huge mistake. You might as well not even come if you're not gonna be my gosh. Yeah. See, and that's that's what I'm nervous about.
SPEAKER_01I have a triple pull, but like You should be. But you can't make weight with it now, can you? I can't make weight. With it. That's the problem.
SPEAKER_04You know, they used to call this match the triple pool challenge, but you're shooting off a hill every time.
SPEAKER_01So how does one navigate that? The grass grew a little bit this year, too. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_04Well, just get really good off of a tripod. You're set.
SPEAKER_01Off a tripod. Like everything's gonna be off a tripod. No, not everything. Not everything. Not everything, but oh um so how does are there are there situations where I could throw down, you know, I have a an Everly sock up ranger, throw that down, bipod off of that, and then like rear tripod.
SPEAKER_02Bipod off the backpack?
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Or sound like it might work.
SPEAKER_04Or you could go offhand, yeah.
unknownOh my gosh.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I have automated.
SPEAKER_02You're gonna learn. Yeah, that's the thing. Yeah, you're gonna learn.
SPEAKER_01Oh man. Oh, you can't make wings with it with a double or triple? No, definitely not triple. Dude, I uh man, and and this this is this is where all right for everybody listening that's gonna shoot sportsmen, right? Like everything's compromised. I went with like this is an like an M24 profile barrel that's heavy fluted. That's yeah, I mean, if you if that were a pencil barrel, like I could probably run two triple pulls on here, right? It would be no issue.
SPEAKER_02But you built, yeah, I mean that's the thing. Like the original setup was 13 pounds and under, and there was no incentive to really be any lighter. Or, you know, most PRS matches, you don't ever need a triple pull like you can get around it. But now we're Hunter Field style matches that you're gonna need to be a little bit more dynamic on the fly, but you can also use your tripod the whole time, so yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, shooting up with tripod in bat can, you'll be fine. Don't get nervous.
SPEAKER_02I I proof so I proved the whole I proved the whole course of fire clipped into my tripod with my 300 Norma.
SPEAKER_01Clipped in. All right, so let's talk about that for for PRS shooters that are what head do you use on the try this.
SPEAKER_04What?
SPEAKER_01Oh man.
SPEAKER_04What head are you using on your tripod?
SPEAKER_02Uh I have a few. The ball head TRS TF Leo photo. His like Michael looks like designed uh Anvil. So okay. So that's what I'm saying. All right. I so here's the thing. So for me, okay, how I so I had to learn how to do I've done both forever. And for hunting, I typically clip in. Um, and then my part, like the guy that I run a lot of um uh team matches with, he likes to clip in. So um I like on lighter weight rifles, I've found that clipping in, I like it a little bit better, but on heavier ones, um bag, you know, rifle on bag not clipped in typically works better. So it just depends on you know personal preference. But I don't mind clipping in at all.
SPEAKER_04I like I like clipping into a leveling base, but I'm not a big fan of clipping like clipping into a ball head like that. I'm just I'm not as steady.
SPEAKER_02See, I I think it just takes, you know, it you just have to, it's something that you you have to get used to and and whatnot. I think the the newer newer tripods, the better tripod, a lot more stable. The heads are better now, so it is definitely a lot better than what it used to be.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you think like an anvil though, huh, Rusty? And not like uh the anvil the big ball head.
SPEAKER_04So the anvil is very versatile. You can no matter what angle your tripod is, you can get the right angle and and and shoot it from there. Um with the leveling base, you're a lot more limited, so you have to get pretty good at knowing where you're gonna have to be, how you know what leg needs to go longer to get to be able to get that level. It's just more solid.
SPEAKER_03But uh an anvil is is good for most of this stuff. Yeah. I wouldn't have to do that. Once you get into an anvil, yeah. I like it.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. They they work just fine.
SPEAKER_01I just found that I'm a little steadier with the leveling base, but the anvil works just by well let me ask this, and and this is probably gonna sound completely newbie too, but do you guys uh when looking for targets, do you just freehand or do you throw a bag down like on top of your I think we're talking about we're talking a rookie here.
SPEAKER_04Holy crap! Um so I I've only done a little bit of practice.
SPEAKER_02I I've started to just so I leave my binos clipped into my tripod already, um, and I have the little really right stuff um uh barrel cinch. And I've always just done that, it's just ready to go, and then I'm pretty fast with that. Some people like to glass on a bag, um, which I can do too. Uh I'm just I just like my current setup. I don't know how rusty.
SPEAKER_04A lot of really good shooters just throw a bag up on top of a of a plate and uh and glass from there. Um I uh I clip in, I just leave mine clipped in.
SPEAKER_02I think I think you see, I think a lot of us started with just throwing the bag on and binos on bag, but there's been a lot of guys transition to like Rusty and I do clipped in. And um, I think I I'm good, I I like it.
SPEAKER_04So one good thing about clipping in is you'll see a target. So this is a scenario you're gonna glass chart, so oh, there it is, and then you range it and you go, okay, it's 2.3, and then you gotta look down and write that on your arm, and then you look back up and say, Oh crap, where was that target? Well, if you're clipped in, your target your binoculars are still pointing at your target. So then you can get your you can get your uh your reference points, right? But if it's just on a bag, all of a sudden it's gone and you gotta find it again.
SPEAKER_01So and then go to find the next one. Got it.
SPEAKER_02And it and it helps you be a little bit more precise when you're really trying to range the target itself and not, you know, be you're just trying to get an accurate range. And um, you know, when you're free handing, yeah, you can maybe look for stuff, but you also want to range as you're looking. So yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yep. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So I'll give you, I'll give you some advice here, Ken. When you're ranging, range the base of the T-post. Don't try to range the steel. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Not many lasers will hit steel, unpainted steel. So yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, another good thing too is, you know, once you found the target, I like to try to find a reference point with my naked eye as well. So that way when I get down on the rifle, I can I know w where in the general area to look at. So Yep.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_02Um you'll see. I mean, it's it's fun. It's just I didn't go crazy. So normally I'm a we're a little bit, you know, I say we, but um, Brandon and I, we're a little bit more. We put the targets, some of them are very difficult to find. Um, they're in like very unique positions. And they're not impossible, but um, you know, I kind of throttle back a little bit because we do have more going on now. So the targets are gonna be a little bit easier to find, most of them. Some of them are gonna be difficult. Um, but like I said, there's just already a lot going on to where I don't want to go like how we normally do it. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Sure, sure.
SPEAKER_02But still a lot of separation stages. I mean, yeah, it'll be good.
SPEAKER_01I I I mean, I uh uh you guys have me thinking now. I had totally taken the tripod part of this for granted. And I'm like, well, I'm just gonna travel with I have a three-section small RRS tripod that I've typically travel with. I have a tall, like two-section loophole or uh Leophoto that I usually drive with, but if I'm flying, I take the small one. Well, what do you want? Do you want a two-section, three-section? It doesn't matter. You want sturdy if you're shooting off of it, right?
SPEAKER_04I I use a two-vets, two-section. It's real sturdy. Um, and I can I can kneel from that, and it's just the right height with my head on it for kneeling, right? If you have a three-section, typically it's really short, you're gonna have to lengthen it in order to get behind class.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04So I like the two-section for that reason. Plus, especially in this match, we're gonna be doing I'm gonna I plan on doing a lot of uh triple pull tripod rear. And so it's already set up high enough to be able to do that.
SPEAKER_03There you go.
SPEAKER_02It's uh you this you use a lot of your gear. I like, like I said, I like people to really like think about what they're getting into, the position wise, and and they're straightforward. And most of them are just modified prone. Um, but you really have to think about how you're setting up and and um yeah, some are straightforward, but some are just like, yeah, you gotta be a little creative. Um, so it's cool. It's not just like there's nothing flat here essentially. Okay.
SPEAKER_04Are you I got a question for you, Dan? Are you uh we haven't talked about this? Are you using a shooting area or is there a is there a point that you have to be able to touch? And what about the glassing point?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, so the glassing is gonna be similar to where there'll be a uh a pin, you know, or your siding pin and then do your limit lines. Um, and then there'll be a separate shooting position from there with just like a flag, and it's just within arm's length, you know, a reasonable arm's length. So I there's so much room out there that like any position is gonna be fine. It's just a reasonable arm's length distance from that flag.
SPEAKER_03Right. Okay. And we'll go, we'll obviously go over all that um before the match. So awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Oh, nothing.
SPEAKER_05It's gonna be good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think you'll let sleep in the night, Ken. I'll probably be laying in bed and be like, oh, I need a member to pack this. Just come on down, grab the line. I'm gonna be getting checks all night on all right. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, you two hours beyond. You're going on a hunt. I mean, you don't know what you're gonna get into yet, so man.
SPEAKER_01I yeah. When I went, uh actually it was that sick of black tail there. I was I got that with Pinch up in Kodiak Island, and um that was uh 6'5 PRC off a tripod, you know? Um and I hit that one twice out of four. It was walking away at 400 yards, so uh we'll figure it out.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, you guys killed some some big ones on that hot, you and John.
SPEAKER_01It was uh Unreal, unreal lucky, I think. Um that was pretty sick. It was. Uh yeah, I think it was yeah. That's my best hunt, but I don't I'm not in a room full of deer heads. I have like four sets of antlers in here. I have like a little corner of what Rusty has, but oh man. Yeah. Well, I'm excited.
SPEAKER_04Like Dan likes to say, I've been doing this for a long time, right?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Just the the brother of a legend.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's awesome. Well, I'm excited to shoot with you, Rusty.
SPEAKER_04Um, it'll be fun. We got a good squad.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Hopefully, hopefully I'll learn a lot from you guys here. And um, I don't think I'll be writing myself a check this week, I don't tell you that. No way.
SPEAKER_04Don't write yourself off. You'll be fine.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, you'll be fine. I mean, you'll like I said, it's not, it's very doable. It's I tried to design it so it's everybody's gonna enjoy themselves. They're they're gonna be challenged, but they're also gonna be very doable. And then there's a lot of separation areas too to challenge better shooters.
SPEAKER_04So well, I'll tell you, Ken, the first time I shot this match, first time that's you've only had it here once, right? Have you had it here before?
SPEAKER_02No, we've had it here. No, we've had it here every time except for the one time where we had that hundred-year storm and and I remember that one.
SPEAKER_04All right, so anyway, the first time I shot it there, I saw it with a double pull and uh double pull on a tripod. So I don't I didn't have a triple pull back then. I don't even know if they had designed yet.
SPEAKER_02But anyway, I don't know if we yeah, did we even have tri I don't know if we had triple pulls back then?
SPEAKER_04I don't think we did, but I did have the double pull. So and it was it was fine. It was like all the way up, all the way in.
SPEAKER_02It's when Kale shot it as a team a few years ago, two years ago, three years ago, um, he just had a double and he was he he got through most of it too. So yeah. All of a double harassing.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I have a double, I just can't use it.
SPEAKER_02Well, uh, sandpaper start start shaving down that barrel profile. Oh my god.
SPEAKER_04You know those uh you know I I actually took my feet out and weighed on the spikes to see how much they weighed. It's like man, maybe I could do it without the spikes if I took the spikes out.
SPEAKER_02I mean that's that's pretty good, this mountain pod. That's pretty good. No, yeah, it's honestly it's gonna get you pretty far. I mean, I'm not it it's nothing crazy, like I said. It's just some positions you'll you'll see. I mean yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_01Pull way back by the magwa. Yeah, that that's nice and steady there.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh well it's like gas station sushi. You never know what you're gonna get.
SPEAKER_01You never know. No, you don't even know why you're eating it, right? Like it might taste normal, but it might not be.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_04It'll be interesting. I'm looking forward to it.
SPEAKER_03It'll be.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. I might just have to follow your guys' squad just to watch Ken shoot every stage.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I mean, somebody, yeah. We need content, so I'll shoot first.
SPEAKER_04I'll just stay back and video after the video can.
SPEAKER_01There you go. I love it. Appreciate it. Appreciate it. Cool. Well, I'll I'll be out there late tomorrow night. I'll see you uh Thursday morning, Dan. When uh when do you get in, Rusty?
SPEAKER_04I get in Friday about Friday afternoon, just in time to zero and check out.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, perfect. And um, yeah, 200 rounds, that's more than enough, right? Oh, yeah. How many do you have to do? Like 160, 150 gets in.
SPEAKER_02150 will be enough. But here's the thing, you're not shooting every all eight on every stage.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, um, so maybe it's gonna be a lot less.
SPEAKER_02I mean, it's it it that's the nice thing about these matches is you don't burn a lot of ammo. Um, so yeah.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Yeah. We'll see how this goes. Well, I appreciate you guys. Thank you for your time this evening. Uh Dan, hopefully you get healed up a little bit before this weekend. Yeah, well, man. Rusty, safe travels to you. All right, uh, move on. We'll have to do a little bit of a recap next week and see how. Yeah, let's do it.
SPEAKER_02Let's do a recap next week and just I uh it's gonna be a lot more entertaining.
SPEAKER_01So I'm embarrassed already. Yeah, no, I'd uh wait for the video. All right, thank you guys.
SPEAKER_03Talk to you later. Bye later.
