Guy, welcome back to the show. Episode like 23, we're at, which is crazy to me. We've just been recording all year, it feels like. Um, here with good friend Jeff Geary, thank you for joining us again. We're gonna test uh everybody's internet tonight, from Keith Baker in Wyoming to Derek Warren in Ohio, and we finished with Justin Watts in Oklahoma. We'll hopefully have some good video audio.
SPEAKER_03We dive into the happenings at the Sisler and where's the best place to get breakfast and woe die?
SPEAKER_01Jeff Geary, welcome. How are you doing, Ken? I'm well, man. I'm well. It's good to see your face. Thank you for joining me again. I appreciate the uh I appreciate the company. I do. Thank you. Absolutely. Right on, man. I um uh actually I had a good weekend. I didn't get a chance to shoot, but um uh my son and I left over the weekend. We just got back like a few hours ago. It's Tuesday now, so like a couple three days, but uh we we had the opportunity to go fishing, which is uh awesome. I think last time he and I did this two years ago, we went for a couple days and a lot of core memories made. Um so yeah, it was a really good time. Like we just like it was just him and I, you know, and I got to watch him like really like be as a real person without an iPad or uh, you know, any of the electronic devices that corrupt our kids. So I had a great weekend.
SPEAKER_03Um man, you mine similar theme. I've had a ton of fun, relaxed kind of weekends. It starts, it's it started that way, you know. Just did my good buddy Randall Hand, you know, pick me up with just you know buddy's trip on the way up there, and then Chris Valdez joins us later in the later in the evening.
SPEAKER_01So which is Robert Valdez.
SPEAKER_03Robert Valdez, yes, that's his name, Robert Valdez. Uh I don't know if he hadn't changed it to Chris. I think he was wanting to change it, but then he thought people would be like, oh, you did that to get closer to white paint. Or you know, you never know what people think. I'm not sure why.
SPEAKER_01He said he was gonna change it soon, but uh we could maybe we do that during the show and just change it for him. Just change it for him, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I I know him by Chris, obviously, although I saw him.
SPEAKER_01And when I saw Robert, I'm like, huh, I don't know Robert. And then the handle, I think, says something about Chris, and it was like uh and he's shooting really well. I'm like, that's Chris. Yeah, yeah. Yeah. But yeah, went up to up in Indiana.
SPEAKER_03Up in Indiana. Yep, yep, sisler outside Butlerville. I bet weather was just gorgeous. I mean, all three days could could not have had nicer weather. Just waking up, I think it was 60 degrees the first morning, just perfect. So just you know, getting over to the range Friday, just kind of practiced, figured out which I started with my dasher.
SPEAKER_01That's when you went shot great. So hold on, when you went to Twisted Barrel, I think you said you got down there, it was hot, you're like, you shot what 15 rounds.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah, just a few rounds.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah. So different this time.
SPEAKER_03Oh, much different.
SPEAKER_01So plus I'm different. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Plus, well, plus I wanted one of those, that that press right there. I I wanted the damn press. So I needed the rifle to be ready to go. And the dasher just 100 yards zero, right where I pointed it. Awesome. Ran it out. Yep, we're pretty good there. Went and then got the 647 with the 120s, and it yeah, it's it shot very good. The only reason I nope, I ended up going with the dasher at the end of the day. We were shooting tune-up day. We were having some very I mean, conditions at that point, wind was was varying, probably it wasn't big, but it was, you know, 5 to 10, and it was just all different ways. And if we were shooting these head targets on a van where there's just, you know, my nemesis, there's nothing around the target, just skyline.
SPEAKER_01We've already we've already confirmed you don't see shit.
SPEAKER_03No, we're not seeing it. So especially with a 120 going 2920 or something.
SPEAKER_01So just laser beam right by the target.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Randall gets down on this prop and and he misses five straight. Just trying every everything that made sense at the time, from probably you know, three left to three right, just everything. And then all right, I get down, I just throw six in a mag real quick and get down there thinking I miss all six. Are you serious? All six. Yeah, yeah, that was probably my problem. That was probably my problem. I'm probably shouldn't.
SPEAKER_01How did you miss all six? Because you should miss two in a row, right? I mean I should. You tried straight up, you go half mil left, half male right.
SPEAKER_03I worked hard, I think, to block it out of my memory because now I've got to shoot a match tomorrow. So best I can tell, it felt like it should have been maybe a tenth right. And so tenth right didn't work. Okay, maybe it picked up more. I think I went to four. They are fairly narrow heads, but you know, four made sense. That four didn't work. Okay, then back to the I was like, maybe it's switching around, went to like left two, nothing, and then just bounced in between that. And then to finish the story, I gave gave up and I put one round in a magazine, and then Chris Boudies gets up there with my rifle and just drills the son of a bitch. And yeah, with something I tried multiple times. Who knows?
SPEAKER_01At least I thought I did, but yeah, but but the Dasher, the Dasher crushed it this weekend.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, Dasher shot great. Tripod rear saved me a few times, and my positional absolutely cost me five of my seven misses were positional. Oh boy. Just weak. I could feel just just no confidence, so gotta gotta work on that.
SPEAKER_01What uh so what do you mean just weak? Like I don't yeah, I get what is it?
SPEAKER_03Compared to well, last year I shot a bunch and I was practicing as much as I could, getting ready for the finale as much as I could. So when I did positional, I would move to I just shot positional. I was used to it. The last you know, ever since the finale this year, I it hurts my shoulder to practice moving positional each time. Yeah, so I just have not practiced that. If if I practice positional, it's just a couple shots at tune-up day usually. But what I should do, realize that today, I'm just gonna put a bag on a barricade and just throw a gun on there. I'll just just shoot shots just to get the feel of doing it. And I feel like I mean I'm getting steady, I'm making what I feel are good shots. I guess this probably goes back to me not ever really learning the fundamentals properly. I think my fundamentals, my NPA, all that is just out of whack, and I am not I'm just not seeing them very well. Or pulling, I haven't found a trend if they're missing high low. They seem to be missing both of them. So my gosh. But I'm also shooting random crap half the time. So is it me or that?
SPEAKER_01It lot of a lot of a lot of junk. I mean, looking at the results here, so second place.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I shot I shot great with the dasher.
SPEAKER_01Everything just worked. 120 127 shooters, uh pretty stacked field, as we uh as as we recounted last week. Very stacked, very stacked. Who all was in your squad?
SPEAKER_03So and uh Chris Valdez was, and then down a few more spaces. I think we had Jake Simmons in 11th. Yep, and then Corey Frederick 15th, 14th. Yeah, okay. Uh Lee Petros, he did not have his best weekend. He shapes something was just off. He was not, he just wasn't shooting what he normally does. So, but yeah, he he normally can be counted on. God, who well, I feel like I'm missing someone else. But we had I mean it was just one after the other, and everything just kind of tracked between all of us, and everybody was just kind of in a rhythm. It was good, but but it was fun. I didn't realize Chris had shot quite as well as he was tied for the lead after day one. Yeah, yeah. Yeah, and the because the very first stage we started on, we all like dumped two immediately. Derek dumps two, I dumped two. Chris dumps two in a very crisp way. He shoots four shots from one position instead of he's watched everybody two move, two, move, two move, and he gets down there and shoots four. Uh and he hit them all, but yeah, so he technically he missed what one target that day.
SPEAKER_01How many did he drop?
SPEAKER_03He dropped three day one. And because he didn't move. Because he didn't move, he could that cost him two shots there.
SPEAKER_01Oh my gosh. So that puts him. So then he was puts him in second.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, he was three with Lane and um oh yeah, that Keelan Woods. Gotta get a shout out to him. He was a marksman. Yeah. He had a rough day too, I think. He changed his handle to I think one day wonder. I thought that was kind of funny. He he ended up finishing like 30 30 something. I remember looking it up because he killed it day one. Keelan Woods. Keelan Woods. Day one wonder. Because it was funny during the match, he came over to me just randomly and was like, hey, I'm Keelan. I'm cool. Yeah, Jeff. Nice. I you know, maybe you just wanted to meet me, not quite sure, whatever. That was midway through day one. At the end of day one, I see he's tied for first. So I then I took that as he came over, it's like, hey Jeff, just wanted to let you know when you see tonight who's beating your ass, you'll know, you'll know that was me. So message received, I will not forget he was.
SPEAKER_01So obviously, he sh you guys shot uh consecutive, what, 20 stages, 18 stages? So he we did 10 and 8. 10 and 8. So he he probably started at he started he he was on nine. I started eight. He started on nine. So clean, clean, clean. Drop one, drop one, drop one. Yeah, and then he finished on yeah, so he was down three. And then minus two, minus seven, minus five, minus two. Oh my gosh.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, went south there fast. But those stages T Y L squares. We'll we'll wait. Yeah, let Derek uh, I guess, talk about how he was feeling. Our finishing stages, we had, I think, built up as being probably three of the toughest, you know, five stages of the match. Okay. Two of the ones being the two we started on. I mean, we you know dump two and dump one immediately, and we're like, holy crap, this is we're it we're in for a grind here. Oh, okay. And and then we, you know, run into a bunch of bunch of cleanable stuff. And but looking at the scores after day one, stages kind of three, four, five, six, seven, just had some carnage. And there were some wasn't tough conditions uh or big win conditions, but it was it was just so switchy, so fast, just velocity and direction at times.
SPEAKER_01Targets are small, and if you miss a little wind direction, like you're just dropping it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, just a few of the targets were small. So if you got lucky and got one of the maybe big stage targets during that bad switch, but I don't know, it was so random. It you were bound to. I mean, it happened to me once. I'm sure it caught everybody at some point, so that's just you know, the way it is.
SPEAKER_01But it's the way it is. Well, have you had an opportunity to use that sack press in the background?
unknownNo.
SPEAKER_03No. Uh that sucker is massive and heavy, and I'm secretly now wondering because I was a little behind where I needed to be. I'd I'd started day two good, but I was still uh I had a little work to do. I wasn't quite in top three territory, and then a few people just kind of fell out near the end, and I'm secretly wondering if this was a master plan, because me carrying that sucker down to the pond for pictures and then carrying they were probably just watching them like, is that knee about to crumble any second that knee's crumbling? So yeah, Ben probably was laughing watching me try to carry that sucker. That is beefy, but what a what a piece of equipment. That thing is gorgeous. It's unbelievably smooth, right? Oh, so smooth. Yeah, looking forward to not picking it up again.
SPEAKER_01But uh yeah, the silver and black looks good. I think the silver and black silver that's the color, that's the color combination, I think.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I wanted I would have taken the hundred points and first, but I did want the silver press.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_03And yeah, so it's so yeah, great weekend. Could not have been any better.
SPEAKER_01That's awesome. Um, let's take a look at our picks. So I I I felt pretty strong here. You you you did pretty pretty good. So Adam Wienberger, match director for Sex Sizzler, was on with us. There's you, Jeff, Gary, Dawson Keene, who was the uh match director for Pancake Lake, was on with us, and then me, and we went in that order. Adam, Jeff, Dawson, Ken. You had, man, uh, I mean, Grace Vaughn, your last pick. Um, I would say that's pretty good for a last pick. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. She I she was trending. I wanted to give her a little bit. I tried not to say anything to her in case she knew, or I just avoided that. It's like just but 33rd in that field that's pretty good. I mean, that's not bad.
SPEAKER_01Not bad at all. And the other four you had, all top tens. Ben Gossett, second pick was yourself. Third pick was Derek Warren, uh, and then Lane Shelley. All top ten. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_03Probably my best, my best picking yet.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I had three out of the top ten. Josh Edget, Josh Ulicki, Keith Rudassil. Yeah, man. Uh speaking of Keith, did you happen to see the precision rifle blog post that they made today? Or yesterday. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_03Oh, about the new I'm sorry, go ahead, Ken. No, well, yeah. Uh you were talking to the people, not me. I'm sorry.
SPEAKER_01No, what what were you gonna say? No, no, go ahead. Okay, it sounded like you were gonna spill the beans on something. I don't know if that's um let me let me bring up the precision rifle blog real quick. Um, yeah, this post here. So uh Kalzant, I talked to him last week. He's he's been doing a whole bunch of data scraping and crunching and using AI for some really cool stuff. Um, but he compiled the uh skill stage times from basically every match running the new format. So since it went to from four positions in a 10-inch circle uh to now five positions and you know the various formats, but um really cool. So Keith Rudisell has one, two, three, four out of the top ten. Ben Gossett has two. Bushman, Bushman, this surprised me. Bushman has two.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I actually did not know that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, including the Reagan Stower. Yeah, at Quays, yeah, that isn't that kind of surprising. Last year at Quays.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01I actually was squatted with him when he was.
SPEAKER_03I mean, the fact that yeah, people would lose that bet if you said, Who's done the fastest skill stage time, Bushman or Gossett? Uh I would have said Ben 100%. Yeah, Ben a million times over. Cole, sneaky, sneaky fast. I remember seeing a couple times. Yeah, he did that at Twisted Barrel too. That wouldn't be Twisted Barrel, it just it just felt doable. I don't want to say the targets were bigger, but they just appeared easy. They appeared bigger. Maybe the conditions were that nice.
SPEAKER_01Or, I mean, is it possible? And we could we could I should I secretly should have brought Trey Fleming and BDK on here. Are you guys running regulation size targets?
SPEAKER_03I don't want to take away Keith's title. No, yeah. At least he's got it either way. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01If that would happen to be it's a Twisted Barrel this year. There's one, two, three. Twisted Barrel last year was also Keith.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Zach Sizzler. Uh this year. This is this weekend. Okay, and Ben's was also, yeah. Because Ben beat him this year. Yeah, and Ben's was So Ben won. And Keith was second? Yep. On the on the barricade? Had it been, there's no other faster times.
SPEAKER_03I think Keith had to start there is what I heard. So probably he's probably upset he didn't have like a few stages to get kind of warmed up. He probably feels he could have done a 38 below 38.
SPEAKER_01Uh yeah, it's interesting to see that Clay Clay's match is on here twice. Twisted barrel four times. I would have never guessed that either. That like, you know, Clay Clay's match would even be on this list. Right. You would think Oklahoma, nobody's running it fast in Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_03But uh but yeah, that's pretty cool Ben to risk that time. Yeah. I don't know if I mean that feels like you're risking missing going that fast. Even for someone like that, it's at least in the carts. And at that point in time when he shot that, I mean, he was either tied for the I think he and Keith were tied for the lead early on. So to do it early fairly early in a match when you're tied for the lead, it's you know, something with a match that appears as though one shot at this match after a little while felt like that this is important.
SPEAKER_01I my opinion, um, I'm just looking to see if if if you agree or not, but like Ben Gossett's pretty stone cold, isn't he? Like it doesn't matter when in a match. He he's yeah, he's dialed in, he's gone for it. It doesn't matter to him.
SPEAKER_03I yeah. I I would I would like to think if if that was maybe the second to last stage uh it's a finale and he needed the 10 point if he had a I don't know. I just don't see him going for it. It's yes, it's in a super important time. Yeah. So, but yeah, I mean he's obviously won so many matches as I guess I'm one. I've won a lot of matches too, but at this point, just getting in contention was such a cool feeling. Uh I think realistically, uh any match could honestly be my final match. Uh no, no kidding. You think so? It just it could be. It could be. I think because of the knee? Because of anything. I mean, back, knee, shoulder, I take your pick. I mean, there's a lot of ticking time bombs on me here that I feel like I'm buying time. So point being is I think it's a nice way to approach it anyway, to appreciate them more. Just go for it. I was after, yeah, going to bed after night one and and early, and let's see how day two gets going, and was shooting good day two. And you know, once that five stages to go, I knew Derek where he was. Okay, we're we're locked in. This is this is go time. And yeah, yeah, then I was so that was by far like that's why I shoot for though that feeling, though those final few stages when you're in contention for a win. And bat especially when you're battling with the dude that's um winning winning the match. I mean, it's like, yeah, this is who's gonna gonna win if I don't. Yeah. That's a rare opportunity to be in that position with the the guy you're battling with. So those are those are always always remember, those are meaningful.
SPEAKER_01You know, I so I'm trying to, I have a 10-year-old son, right, and who I just mentioned that we went fishing and stuff with this weekend, and then I have a nine-year-old daughter. And um, we're going through this moment in time right now uh where our kids are like, oh, can we do that again? Or can we get one more? Or you know, one more dessert, or you know, it's one more, one more, one more, you know. And uh I it's this dopamine reaction, right? Like we all have this feeling, like like you're describing being in the you know, in the in the running, down the stretch that high, right? It's like uh, you know, it's undisc it's kind of indescribable, right? Like, but we all get it in one way or another. And you know, and I like this last weekend with my son, you know, we were like, all right, let's catch one more fish, then we're out of here. And he caught one, gets it in a boat, you know, like we're we're excited, we're both feeling great, you know. Take the hook out, you know, and then put it in the water, and he's like, one more dad. I'm like, hey, we gotta control ourselves, you know, like you just can't one more ourselves to death, right? But like, I you know, hey, Jeff, when you're when you're not able to shoot, how are you gonna chase that again? What are you gonna do?
SPEAKER_03I I'll find something. I yeah, way back in the day before when I had like my first spinal fusion and was out for a few years, uh I chased that with sim racing. So it's basically the it's it's a PR esque. Crossover. Same community, same type of people. They're just much unathletic and fat and overweight people. Sorry, sim racing community. But that's kind of that that community. And but you get the I mean you get the high-end gear, the steering wheels and the pedals, all that stuff. You end up, you're you're 10, 12 grand in getting getting outfitted, and and then you're racing and competing against other people live all over the world. The tracks are incredibly realistic, laser scanned. The competition basically, you want the competition, and it's there, and it feels like it's competition at the highest level of I guess sim racing. Obviously, it's not real racing, but it at least accomplished what I was trying, I was looking for at the damn time. Until I was able to actually do stuff and and then found PRS. Here we are later. Chasing the same thing.
SPEAKER_01The story of Jeff Geary is unfolding in a very fascinating way. I love it.
SPEAKER_03But anyway, let's we can move on to uh Derek. He's the highlight.
SPEAKER_01Derek Warren, welcome to the show this evening. How are you, buddy? I'm pretty good. Yep. Yeah?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I can say I'm pretty happy after this weekend. So then a happy few days. So yeah, heck yeah.
SPEAKER_01You own that course of fire now, right? I mean that I mean you own that range. That's yours.
SPEAKER_04That's my range, yes. I can safely say that uh I've kind of said that for a little while now that everybody has their range, like uh Bex's MKM, Gary's, either Cam or MTA, like all the East Ghost ones told. Yeah, like yeah. And uh and I was just like, I can I think I can with confidence say that's my range.
SPEAKER_01Like that's that's your range.
SPEAKER_04Yep.
SPEAKER_03Like I'm glad you were willing to say that since you did say that after the match. So I'm glad you he really did. So so yeah, it's all that's honest.
SPEAKER_01Well uh we're Keith Baker's gonna join us here in a little bit. He's still out west of the winner of the Pancake Lake open, but for the moment here, let's let's talk about this, Derek. Um full of confidence this weekend, eh?
SPEAKER_04Yeah. So I don't know if uh Jeff touched on it yet there on train up day.
SPEAKER_03No, I've left that part out. Uh that was very important. I was waiting for you. So you feel free to tell what you first said to me. Literally, uh probably one of the first things he says to me on train up day. What did you say?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so on uh Friday, yeah. I walked to her chef and I'm like, so you're ready this week and everything's shooting good? He's like, Yep, I'm getting uh pressed. I'm like, Well, you're getting silver because I'm getting gold. Oh no.
SPEAKER_03He absolutely said that.
SPEAKER_01Right, I mean right off the bat.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, right off the b I I told him and as I would try to say it, not uh confidence, not cockiness. I mean, there's a little bit of both, but I mean just fine line. I I mean I had uh I just I told myself that for the hot minute now that like the scores kind of didn't matter because I had this match. Like I I knew this match was coming and I'm I was going there to win. And right on.
SPEAKER_03But and right on. So uh yep, so Derek, I mean, obviously we dropped those shots pretty early. After that, you were incredibly solid. Uh your rifle, you've been he's been sending me pictures of his groups, and I don't know if that's also now I'm thinking, man, has he been shit talking to me for a while, and I didn't even know uh yeah, because the groups are amazing. So obviously I you have the utmost confidence in your rifle at all times. I assume. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Well, I will say that's like one thing, and I'm I guess I I'm not sending groups to like you know shit talk or anything, but I guess like well, no, I just I do like the idea of just the getting the feedback from like other competitors, and if they'd be brutally honest, be like, no, dude, like that you got vertical there, like that's not a good group, like, or something like that, and just like when he or somebody else tells you, like, like when I send it to Jeff or my buddy Scott, and they're like, Oh yeah, it's gonna be a good weekend, then that gives me confidence. It is a little confidence booster, yeah.
SPEAKER_01And well, what what stage did you guys start on? We start on eight.
SPEAKER_03So two off the bat, and then one on some pipes that was very tough. T whale, I mean that small target's uh one of the smallest targets on the range. You gotta shoot it twice. He actually center punched it and then missed your last one, as I recall.
SPEAKER_04Yes, I yeah. And we were very much right off the rip. It's like I I could see in both our eyes it was like, oh, we uh that's not gonna fly.
SPEAKER_03Like I it's gonna be a challenge. So you definitely kind of felt this the squad energy, I would say, with all the people we had pretty well shooting awesome. You felt that, Derek?
SPEAKER_04Oh yeah, like no, dude, like I was ecstatic with our squad running like clockwork. Like, I mean, we were so I've been like telling people lately, like uh kind of guys uh and messenger me and talking to other people where TRS is a solo sport in a sense, it's racing, there's only one winner, but it's not at the end of the day. Like, and when you got a uh in a sense a team, like we had that squad with like with I mean you with uh Valdez, with Simmons, with uh Lee, Corey, everybody just like so happy to pitch in and work together. Okay. Like it was it there was never a doubt when like old six to like six to ten of us were saying we gotta tripod this, then it's like that's obviously the way to do it. I mean, there's no doubt in my mind.
SPEAKER_03I mean, okay so now alright, so you dropped four for the day. Feeling you felt pretty good, I guess, going into to Sunday. Anything special you did?
SPEAKER_01I mean, you drop drop two on the first, one on a second, then you clean three, drop one more, and then you clean the last four. At that point, where where were you in the standings at the end of day one?
SPEAKER_04Um like I what was there four, three down ahead of us? There were three.
SPEAKER_03It was Lane, Keelan, and and Valdez. And then I think you, Ben, a few people were tied at four, and you wiki, maybe Edge it was kind of right there.
SPEAKER_04And so like we uh what was our like second from last or third from last on day one? It just happened to be the barricade, and like uh oh yeah, you should have dropped one there. I should have. I very much I the second I broke one around, I was like, whoa, he called that a hit. I was like, I got lucky there.
SPEAKER_05Oh boy.
SPEAKER_04So that's what, but at the same time, I knew like I had to do something for time because I didn't look at scores yet, but Ben and like everybody just was like, You we need a good tiebreaker. So I was like, Well, I guess I gotta go for it.
SPEAKER_03And uh that's why you almost missed it, it's because you were going for it.
SPEAKER_04Oh, I was going that was me at 95% of my max speed. Like that was I mean, I can I've done a 43 one time, but like my upper speeds is high 40s. Like that is my 51 is a is a fast time for me. I'm usually a 55 to a 58 is my typical time. But at the same time, I was thinking that I need that, like I needed the time to to, you know, in case.
SPEAKER_01How does that affect your headspace going into that then where it's like, hey, if I uh if I'm gonna be competitive here, I have to I have to move. I gotta go quick. Like, do you does that do you get a little bit shook up from that situation, or do you kind of like feed on that like here we go?
SPEAKER_04Probably a little shook up, I'd say. I was like, I'd like when when Ben's gossip stand there telling you, yeah, you need a good time. It's like yeah, in this field, in this field, it's like you can better listen to him. If there's anybody to listen to, it's uh it's him. So and so that was like, and I'll and so I'll listen to music when I'm on the stage, like every stage I've done.
SPEAKER_05You listen to music.
SPEAKER_04Yep, I blare it, like, and my mindset is I want to force myself to uh watch the impacts and not really rely on hearing the spotter, and is kind of my thing. That is your eyes see everything, yes, yeah. And then so, but that is like the one stage where I'll go through and I'll flick through like five or six different songs until I find something fast, like upbeat myself.
SPEAKER_01I am so curious to know like what song do you the skill stage?
SPEAKER_04Which songs? Uh I listen to a lot of Zephyn, like Five Finger Death Punch, that kind of stuff, like Skillet and like those, and you know, and like but I just can't tell you exactly what song it was that exact stage, but no, I try to listen to faster paces. Energy rock. Yes, okay, okay to get me kind of okay, gotta go like speed up, speed up, speed up, like you know, hit hear the beat going and tell myself, like gotta have the fast pace, fast tempo. But you know, and and it like and I was even like this and after that one bad break, I was really telling myself I need to slow down, but I was also like can't slow down, like so I mean that if I would have missed the shot, I would have definitely slowed down and got the proper hits.
SPEAKER_05Sure.
SPEAKER_04Like well.
SPEAKER_03Well, you shot great on day two. It did were you worried about like our last three stages?
SPEAKER_04Had did you look and see the scores and know that those were pretty damn tough, or did you so I will straight up yes, I was very like I my heart rate the last three stages was definitely elevated from the rest of the match. And like my I was getting jittery, but at the same time I told myself I didn't need to listen or didn't need to look at the scores because in a sense like you and I were kind of like you and I and was like it.
SPEAKER_03Like yeah, I was like, I well I yeah, I was I was trying to send the message. I was like, dude, I'm here. Why don't you give give me one? Maybe two was asking a lot, but I was like, give me give me one. I had to watch. I counted them because I went back and looked at his scores. 105 straight impacts he hit 105. So I'm sitting there on by no's through the through the course of like the end of last four or five stages, day one. So yeah. So what 14 through 18? So one, two, three, four, five. So there's eight or fifty. One, two, three, four, five. Another fifty, there's a hundred. He missed his seventh, sixth, seventh shot on the cattlegate. Either way, a hundred and four, hundred and five, one hundred and six freaking impacts. I had to sit and watch on Binos. That just does something to you. And I just was begging for a miss. He finally gave me one, but yeah, at that point. Uh and and that was at a second to last stage. Yeah. Or yeah, second to yeah, that was second to last stage. And the last stage we had truing bars. I I was concerned for him. I'm sure he'll say he was concerned, but they were kind of bigger truin bars, not true truing bars, but still true and bars where if you miss, you got no, or sorry, if I miss, I got no feedback. If he sees, maybe he does have feedback and doesn't worry about it. But I would have been worried shooting truant bars to win a match.
SPEAKER_04Yep. But that's what like Corey uh Frederick walked over to me like about two stages to go. It was like uh I think it was he had two stages to go. He's like, Do you want to know? And I'm like, No, not yet. Like, not yet. And I'm like, I I have a good idea, but it was like my heart rate was already through the roof. Like, I was like, uh give me a second. And then like on the very last stage, like he said, true and bars, I was like, okay. I then I looked and like I went through and like a nine guarantees it, like that's all I need. I just was telling myself that's that's all it takes, and uh but at the same time I was also trying to tell myself in the back of my head that this is a crazy card stage. If I drop two, it's not impossible for him, like for Jeff to drop one. Like, so I was just telling myself, either way, just stay focused. If you drop one, don't get mad and just be like, Well, it's over. You know, it was just kind of that mindset. But no, like it was it was super cool having all three of us like right there at each other's throats. Like the feeling of like I can't like it, it wasn't of all if I mess up, like somebody on the other end of the range is gonna swipe the opportunity. It's like no, it's the guy right next to you. Yeah, literally, what were you two shooters after me?
SPEAKER_03Like, yeah, so I had to watch. So after your first eight, I'm like, um, all right, I'll I'll clap. Yay, congrats. Yeah, yeah. I mean at that point, it it was it was a done deal. I knew his rifle at that time, he was not missing two shots there, just wasn't gonna happen. But I could, so I had to, yeah, switch gears, and yes, I did want the damn press. I didn't know exactly how many shots I I wasn't playing that game, but uh I just tried to hit them all and I missed one. I was canted real bad. That was I think just uh yeah final stage.
SPEAKER_04I mean, you know, that was not a fun stage to end on. And that Lee even told me after that, he said, like Lee Petra's there, he said, he said, I was worried, man. He's like, I was thinking for all like all three of us, he's like, this wasn't a good like he was before we finished, he's like, this is not a good place to finish.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, it had been like overcast all day, and the sun had just come out a few minutes before this. So yeah, that just added a little bit, but it made it more special, I'm sure, to get up there and crush it and went like that. It was it was impressive because I was I was throwing everything I had at you, man.
SPEAKER_01So it hangs tough. Let's switch gears here for a second and don't go anywhere, Derek. We're gonna hit you with some more questions. But it looks like Keith is now finally settled with the uh the MDT mobile studio, yes, somewhere, somewhere out west.
SPEAKER_00We need Starlink on the MDT truck. I think we're gonna work on that in the future. I I got to the top of the best ridge here, and it was a beautiful mountain view, and I seen four G's and four bars, and I'm like, this is gonna be a great place to do a podcast. And it couldn't connect. So uh 15 miles down the mountain. I found a place that we have good enough service. So at least we'll give her a shot. So anyway, okay.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, no, it looks good, it sounds good. Sorry, you don't get the great view, but I do. So there you go. Yeah, so two weekends in a row, uh, two wins now. This is outstanding, Keith.
SPEAKER_00Back to back.
SPEAKER_01How was it out there?
SPEAKER_00Uh it was uh it was a tough match from the standpoint of it was a lot of single-target engagement uh with elevated targets with no backdrop, like not even a not even a see the bullet hit 200 yards behind it backdrop. Uh and one shot per, one shot and move, one shot and move, one shot and move. So the opportunity for it to go real sideways real fast was there. Yeah. Uh and uh I got pretty fortunate on day one that everything went my way. Uh day two, I tried to give it away, and uh I got lucky enough that I didn't. Noel shot really well both days, and uh uh ended up uh uh doing doing pretty well. I'll say that uh the 120s are pretty much magic though.
SPEAKER_03Like dude, you're you're selling a lot of them. Yeah, it's like he's a good shooter, but right.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, I mean it's not the shooter, it's not it's nothing else. It's definitely the uh switching calibers, and that's it. And uh it made the difference.
SPEAKER_01Um Derek, I'm assuming you you shot a six-dasher, Derek.
SPEAKER_04Yes, yep. Six dasher 105 hybrids.
SPEAKER_01105, yeah. Keith, you've shot you've shot the Indiana location quite a bit. If you were there this weekend, would you have stuck with the tried and true 6- or 105 or would you have gone 120?
SPEAKER_00So I've I've I either tied or won that match once or twice with uh uh always a 2547. Uh and I can tell you that's been all I really shot for the last five years. Uh short one match, which was the other one I won, uh, ironically. Um but uh you know I shot a BR the first match of the year that I won, and then these two I both shot uh 120s out of a six-dasher, and I haven't shot the six-dasher since before COVID, I think.
SPEAKER_01Like, you know, I think you said la last week, I think you said it was an AG cup or something like that that you and this brass went all the way back, probably to the barrel maker.
SPEAKER_00Uh that I that I was going back a little ways, right? So yeah. Um it was basically I I got the bullets, got some barrels, I wanted to try and see how it was gonna work. And I started playing with them, and I'm like, oh my gosh, it just works so good, I don't know that I could not shoot them. Uh so then I took it to the match, and man, I seen everything. I I didn't react to the concussion, I didn't have to be as perfect in my fundamentals. Um, and then uh, you know, with the 25, if I'm off just a quarter inch in my shoulder squareness or something like that, that bullet doesn't hit exactly in the center, right? Like it'll hit, a little high, a little left. And with the dasher and the BR variant, that's not been the case for me. That's pretty much I could get sloppy and still hit stuff. Um and uh Dasher, it's a crutch for the talent. It is right. That's exactly it, right? Uh my lack of talent needed a really high BC bullet out of a six uh out of out of a six millimeter dasher, and I will say it shoots really good, and I can see the energy on plate, which is what I needed to see with the 25. So I can see that. I can run it at the speed I need to run it. I mean, I don't see myself running anything but it uh until I can't get any more bullets. So the goal is now I'll call Morgan and tell her I need every uh 120-grain bullet they make. So no other shooters get them. Um we'll start there. Uh and then, you know, that way I'm the only one shooting them because that's the only, you know, I mean, obviously that's that's the difference, right? Uh that's it. And uh then I'm gonna I'm gonna make sure I buy buy everyone there is and maybe break the mold. And uh then I'll continue to be on this podcast every week and it'll be awesome. So that's the goal. That's that's the goal, right.
SPEAKER_03So and Starlanky. And Starlink, Starlink, Starlink at that point.
SPEAKER_00So when I'm traveling between matches, I can actually get the service a little easier and give you guys some great views of instead of just the side of a great truck. So love it.
SPEAKER_01Derek, do you have any do you have any interest, Derek, in in switching your your bullet of choice? Does that sell you on it?
SPEAKER_04Uh well I already I got about twenty five hundred. uh 120s already uh stashed away. But Keith's gonna blind him. I know where he lives.
SPEAKER_05Well yeah.
SPEAKER_04Um I'm trying to uh get a waiting on get my 647 uh spun up that's what I got a 7 Twist 647 that I'm gonna spin up and uh that's gonna be the cartridge that I was uh thinking of slinging them in. I'm not opposed to trying a dasher but I really got the dasher figured out for the 105s 135 free bore like the neck diameter the brass the jump the everything like I really got it down to a turnkey sign so if I were to do that I have to get a new ringer to start kinda over with the dasher I mean not as let me I say start over but just have ice rifles build you one right it sounds like he's gotta figure it out I think he does have it figured out it does sound like that and wanna say but and but yeah so I'm gonna try the 47 to start with and my mindset is I run stuff at 2840 2850 and even if I want to maybe download it to the same speed it should look the same flying downrange.
SPEAKER_03Like yeah what what match are you going to next Keith?
SPEAKER_00I'm gonna have to come uh take along I think my next couple matches is Peterson uh because it's close to the house it's two hours away this 24 hours to a match is a long drive uh no joke and uh then after that I believe the Barrelmaker uh see that I gotta get some qualifiers in so I wasn't planning on going to Alabama but I think you'll find me at Alabama and you'll probably find me at uh either KRG uh you're gonna find me at one to three qualifiers because gotcha uh I kind of wanted to not you know to to shoot in pockets throughout the year shoot for three weeks take time off shoot for three weeks take time off and try and just get keep sharp and then kind of build up towards the end because I've always kind of been burnt out for the finale uh but in that process I didn't set myself up well in the qualifiers so I need to find some qualifiers that fit my schedule and uh I'll shoot one or two of those and better my score a little bit and put myself in good position for the finale. Because three wins don't give me a 300 if it won't main a qualifier. Yeah and so we're looking at uh we're looking at your leaderboard here so you've got four wins now or three wins I'm sorry Pancake Lake last weekend um you have Sheepdog the weekend before and then 18 PRC back in February but your qualifier was Bullet Central Northernights classic finished fourth there you got 95 points so you're at 295 340 which isn't a terrible score um if we look at where that leaves you you're in 14th right behind Morgan King Chris Catalik so um that's pretty solid but yeah I mean yeah if you go to a team and you you better that you're gonna be in top 10 right I need to come out with I need to have a 98 or better for my qualifier and uh I just I just need to actually put the work in and and and go find a place and hopefully work that out and that's that's my goal. I I think I'll take a couple swings at it. I'm gonna do Peterson because you know I it's close to home it's two hours away I'm home Sunday night it's great uh I had the barrel maker on the schedule uh just because you know I've always shot the barrel maker even though it's not in the same place I did stop I know you did I did make a stop on the way to uh uh the Pancake Lake matches I drove through Wyoming I had the absolute best breakfast I ever had in my life on the way and then about absolute best breakfast absolute loop um it was uh a half hour south of where the I was I was gonna text you the address uh half hour south of where the match is so I won't be able to drive there um it was just so a little I mean that's practically manitale my wife is probably not nearby or I'll I'll get that answer for you she's walking the dog you've got some experience with breakfast I'm sure too uh you know I mean best he's ever had that that means something I'm taking this review just like I would the same about the 120s right like if he's saying these you know this is what you're gonna do I'm gonna buy every breakfast there is so nobody else can have one and it'll always be the best breakfast yeah well just any I guess any any party comments Keith like uh we're gonna see at Barrelmaker and we're gonna we're probably see at 18 or not 18 but Alabama precision you're probably gonna see me at Alabama I would go to MPA but I don't think anybody can beat Kale there at least I haven't seen it uh sure but did you beat him Jeff tell the truth I did I haven't been able to shoot MPA in a little bit but last time no I don't think I did I still bet you got the overall record there for most wins at MPA oh at probably at Cool Acres so far best breakfast in the world was Lodi Wisconsin ever Lodi Lodi and it was J and that's like an J and S maybe J and M J S so downtown okay uh 4.9 stars if you look on Lodi breakfast I'll find the receipt here you were Der Derek you were right that is uh A and J Pancake House Yep and that is let's just hit directions here my location hour and a half from you yep hour and a half yeah I looked I tried to think I tried to think if there was I was gonna text you this is where you need to eat breakfast I've never had a better food cooked A and Janc A and J pancake that's it yep got it like ever what's I mean it was incredible what's kind of Low Dye's claim to fame uh that is where an uh Winniqua Gun Club is okay which is uh I think it goes up to 1200 yards but that this is where they've had F-class nationals the last couple years oh my god this gun range just north so you're probably not the first shooter to go there Keith but um A and J I will make sure that this uh this this podcast or this show stays in the ether forever so that I remember to go back there.
SPEAKER_04Man well I appreciate you man uh sorry your video cut out um good hey safe travels and uh we'll see you soon here in Wisconsin maybe we'll have breakfast together 100% sorry for the bad self service I did everything I could we'll try it again next time all good man thank you thanks guys see ya Derek still with us you're still recording yep yeah I'm I got nowhere better to be so I don't know where better to be than reloading ammo on your gold sack press how many sack presses do you have now uh two yeah and there you go yep got two of them which is the missing one um they're both gold though yeah no I think you got first and second first and second last year was second or uh right behind then and then so yeah I've never gotten that's right okay so I guess I gotta go back next year and get third place.
SPEAKER_01I guess I gotta have you gotta shoot clean all the way up to that last stage right and then you kind of have to see where you're at the standings let everybody else finish drop the right amount of shots yeah and I just have to go to the restroom right before I my name's called and be like I'll be back guys game and you know and then there you go. Check scores.
SPEAKER_03Yep see where you're at shoot seven rounds and be like okay I forfeit those last three there you go and get there you go love it love it but let's all let let's take a look at your standings Derek so you're currently in third with 298 607 how awesome does that feel right now bud that is my highest score ever by about two points I'd say I don't know if I've ever had 297 before um I don't think but and isn't it nuts how like how much 1.9 to two points is like it's crazy guys from 298 I mean Jeff Gary I dropped on the last stage this weekend it because I was sad that you had just one shooting two spots in front of me so I let that one lead because I was sad. And and that's that's probably why I mean it would give me what half a point point something more. It would have been yeah probably half another 99.4 well basically like the other one. So I'd have another 0.4 that's practically in front of Derek if I had 0.4 yeah then I'd get to be like ha ha yeah there you go ninety eight nine you just don't want to be behind the the meat truck or the meat the mighty meat the mighty meat truck you just don't want to be behind it.
SPEAKER_04That's like the exact scenario I had a uh Punisher this year. I knew my very last stage, well I can't win like period just I couldn't win I was gonna my best I could do was if I clean my last stage I'd be one down from the win. I'm like okay now it's about points just clean the stage and you get like a 99 something points. And then I dropped two on my very last stage and it was like oh dang it now I don't even get a like the whole weekend went from like it was like darn it I didn't get any points from it.
SPEAKER_01No points yeah yeah yeah you had 97.965 there but yeah it wouldn't matter anyway right because your Yep yeah your twisted barrel was still would still probably be beat that which is not a qualifier so what what what are your plans the rest of the season I mean we're running out of matches here but are you going up Pennsylvania?
SPEAKER_03Uh I that's one that one's still up in the air don't know might take a little break might look somewhere else uh can't take a break if you're on a heater bud I know uh the other ones for sure I think I'd made up my mind I'm going to twist the barrel again like I okay just uh for the practice it's like I gotta go back for the just the mindset that seems like a bad idea I don't know I know I know right I kind of liking that one although I do shooters signed up I um I do hope you know you're shooting the grind yes yes yes we're we're we're squad just so you know you're in my squad yep I that's yeah you're gonna have to come beat me at my place apparently there you go I'll be ready for that one looking at looking at this twisted barrel match that you're talking about going to it is this is wild to me there that is cool this is got it has got to be our highest attended uh match from international and it is everybody I I don't I almost feel foolish for not thinking this was gonna happen the week before worlds right so you didn't know this was going on this I don't okay my head is so stuck up I've I've got just the amount of things you probably just deal with I just I don't think about half that obviously stuff you deal with so yeah I I certainly knew this was happening 72 international shooters that that's pretty cool that that is I'll get that is that is cool out of yeah it's almost half the field I don't want 55 that is so cool well well welcome shooters it's gonna be good to see you guys yeah yeah I'm looking forward to it probably just good prep just being in hopefully a squad with a few internationals just to prepare me because that's different in itself you mean to shit talking in different languages well they're just being in the school just I don't know I'm just yeah so in the world like I guess that shows how little I know so you're not in the squad with the rest of the US guys how's that work no no it's yeah completely kind of has uh let's separate let's see let's see if uh if Greg Bell is is squatting done yet I don't think so not that I know of let's see if you match uh squatting yeah unsquatted yeah everybody yeah yeah but he's gonna get some work the way they kind of did it the last time is kind of at least for open you know squad one is kind of the the one shooter from each country squad two is someone else then it skipped so I think we had guys in kind of one three five seven nine kind of thing so like I was at least two squads away from I think Morgan was in front of me can you remember I think Clay was behind me the last time but yeah I could barely walk last time I wasn't about to in cameo like walk up a mountain to go gather some intel so yeah we're good uh we're gonna stay here yeah so yeah but it would be cool I would love a sort of match to be almost like a rider cup format where I I get to shoot with Clay with Austin with Bushman you know with all those team it yeah yeah yeah and shoot against shit talking in a line we understand doesn't mean right yeah yeah yeah but anyway but either way I'm looking forward to it I've shot a decent amount internationally and I can I can tell you all of us are cut from the same cloth whether we're from the US or any other country and we're all very like minded individuals that um you know are are our brothers from different countries and um yes there's still going to be shit talk.
SPEAKER_01I mean in the first couple stages you're getting to know each other and things are kind of stressful and stuff but then a few stages in like it starts you know as soon as somebody's come you know really comfortable and they go nine out of ten dropping their last shot you're like oh I'm so proud of you still you know and start giving each other business yep man all right Derek well so heading to Twisted Barrel maybe you'll go up to Pennsylvania for the Peterson match right uh MPA yeah gap ground and MPA are the other absolute twisted gap and mpA are the absolute for shirts so I I should know this has gap uh has gap done squatting yet I don't think they has right no thank god okay um that's what yeah yeah I'm hoping to shoot well I am signed up for this but well yeah it's all on uh KM website um yeah that's gonna be a great match I'll I'll see you know what we're taking some podcasting equipment down there so why don't you guys uh why don't you guys plan on sticking around a little bit and we'll we'll we'll uh maybe we'll do some shit talking on Friday.
SPEAKER_03Yeah especially at that match for first place call mark border and dude you get your it's better you get your name a name on the plaque like above KM and stuff that's all that matters right yeah that that that was the that was that was it yeah that was it when I joined like KM was was the Augusta national that was my masters so like that was the dream like oh that'd be sweet to have the name up there with all those college champions of which I didn't know who anyone was but that would be that would be awesome so let's go down that path I I just uh just humor me for a second so uh I I like to reference KM as Augusta National I is like to me that's what definitely people say that exactly and there's there's what three other majors in in golf right you got the open you have the US Open PGA and PGA yeah two in the championship yep what are the other three in the in the US Pro Series schedule that's a good one I I did kind of think about that recently because we were talking th I thought there were a few more but I mean collis is always one I I feel like sponsors I the ones I feel like are almost signature events so to speak like you win collis you win box canyon you win clays for sure just clays would be one I would say yeah I I would put clays up there I mean yeah um I mean who win like that kind of the winner of that feels like kind of it's a major it's a major win right I mean I remember having uh Shane Ward on here this year that won that and I remember just kind of being in awe about it and I said like man Shane this is like a breakthrough moment you're gonna crush it now and Clay like afterwards he's like you're crazy and I'm like man this is a big deal you know but I think it's a big deal I would put clays up there so Box Canyon Clays KM up the Hornady Hornady yeah um and I've never been there but that's just strictly yeah rep reputation alone that the winner if you just look at the list of winners of various matches and list of winners and the field at the top right because of the field so um yeah yeah are those it I'm sure there at times there's more I mean sometimes a a Peterson match can turn look like oh that's a that's a big time event and a lot of people are there but it's all fire I think it becomes bigger.
SPEAKER_04There's also an aspect of every year where the finale is you can totally see everybody flock to that range.
SPEAKER_03So for the war war last year was really popular twisted yeah but I would definitely yeah collis uh box canyon clays and hornity are like yeah like it doesn't matter who wins Hornady you like that's impressive like yeah you just tell someone I won Hornady you don't need to say anything else that's yeah yeah yeah I mean it stands alone right yeah yeah if you win win one of those I if you never did anything else I think yeah he won Hornady but dudes obviously you can't win that match if you don't know how to shoot.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_03And I would put Quaze and Box Canyon and call us all in that same game slightly different reason. More just it's a little yeah it's different.
SPEAKER_04Yeah it's like a feeling positional bench is what I call call us is positional bench because you gotta be perfect. Ye perfection is mandatory.
SPEAKER_03Yeah the feeling is kind of what makes it special it's just you're there it is impossible to be on those grounds and not feel like you are somewhere special.
SPEAKER_01Especially when there's 50 guys there that that are all studs that could all do well. Yeah that's what I also every year with my gap grind aims I'm like I tell them ahead of time like I stress like you're going to get shell shocked like you're going to be like oh I stand out like this is not I don't belong here like this is like and then I'm like it's okay trust me like Derek I can see you following that up with your AM and like yeah you shell shocked like it's crazy all the things and then you're like I demand perfection out of you this week yes obviously yeah but but yeah it just for a guy that like if it really is their first two day ever first like even sanctioned TRS match ever it's just like the the the what they build in their brains like every match must be like this then right I'm like no no this is like when you sh when you show up to the gap grind on Friday and I mean if you get there at what 10 o'clock and there's already a hundred people shooting and then by like lunchtime I mean it's like the the range has 300 people on it.
SPEAKER_04You know it's like whoa you know and all the vendors and everything all the flags I mean the way Shannon does it is there has been times where the movers at 500 yards there's so many impacts hitting it on train up day that it's like think that one was yours. Like legitimately like that's how many onto the mover there is getting hit multiple times per per pass.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yes crazy that's crazy.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_04No, like I definitely think Hollis, Clays, Boss Canyon, Hornandy. Like those defin that feels like a good.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I think those are the four. I would love to know what Clay has to say.
SPEAKER_03I would too. And some of the other ones, because I bet depending on where you are in the country, even, you that might change.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. But I don't know. Well, Derek, man, I uh I look forward to seeing you at the grind. Uh that'll be the next one we see you at. Um possible I'll be down at Toaster Barrel, but I'm guessing probably not, because I'm probably gonna leave that Sunday or Monday to head to uh World Championship. We're gonna be doing um some live broadcast down there. Um and then on the way home is the gap grind. So after after we leave Texas, Gap Grind's the following week. Jeff, you're just putting all this together right now, aren't you?
SPEAKER_03I just realized that is the next weekend. Oh next weekend, yeah. From the world gap grind.
SPEAKER_01Closing ceremony for the world is on Monday before the gap grind.
SPEAKER_04Oh like two or three days up. MTA is the next weekend, I think.
SPEAKER_01Final weekend, last chance qualifier. Yep.
SPEAKER_03Yes, I will do no more crap talking to Derek about the gap grind right now, man. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Why are you attired there, Jeff? Huh? What's uh yeah, could be a problem.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but I am he's pumped. He's that dude that cleaned the stage with like a one-day match uh that I was at and just went ballistic and was excited. And he lives about an hour from me, so I've yeah, I've been working a little bit with him. He's he's a good guy, but he wants to wants to get into it, so we're going.
SPEAKER_01Awesome. Awesome. Yeah. I um I don't know who my AM is yet. I got a couple local guys that I've taken out a few times. Um so and I I love taking you know a guy that's just kind of dipped his toe in the water in a PRS locally, and then you get him down there and it's like, whoa. Like I just that's I remember my first time at KM, and I love giving people that same experience. That is it is so cool. You know, when you pull in and all the flags are out, and you know, it's firing line full of people and all the vendors there. It's just it's awesome. Love it.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, yeah. It's it's tough when they go to their second match elsewhere.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, you don't get any help. Sorry, bud.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, but uh, but yeah, that's a massive difference right there. I didn't quite realize, I think the first time I did it, how much of I mean that's a superpower, basically, if you have a a a pro literally guiding you and calling corrections for you. So as long as you know math, know it, just know all the other stuff. You don't even have to know math. Yeah, math reticle, what they're saying, probably two left, too right.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, yeah. Well, and I typically dial my scope for my AM. But twice I have dialed my AMS wind for movers. So like I put 1.5 in going one direction and then spin it and go 1.7 going the other direction.
SPEAKER_03Yep.
SPEAKER_01And but just when you hit the edge, send that shot, you know. Yeah. I've had to give it a couple of times I've screwed it up too, but yeah.
SPEAKER_04Now, quick question, yeah. Have you never got to shoot? Did you actually ever shoot Gapgrind as an am? Or yeah, I've talked about him before.
SPEAKER_03I I got disqualified at the match. It was it was a big yeah, big thing. And I got set up by my pro. Is this is a whole thing too? Am's uh coaching my am, he's just getting into it. I've just now realized how you know nothing. I mean nothing. So I mean the point system, classify, all that stuff is just complete gibberish. Oh, yeah. Was for me what when I did it, so all I knew was okay, I I I know how to do this. And then I happened to have Ryan Hanson at the time, who was a top guy, literally just sat there and called corrections for me for two days. That was my problem. I couldn't see shots, so he just guided me on. I did awesome and yeah, too awesome, disqualified. But yeah, I just didn't know any better. And yeah, I've actually come across five people in the last couple weeks, or actually it was probably a couple months, because they wanted to do gap grind, and I looked them up. I was like, dude, you shot 75% at you know, maybe a a week, one-day match. I was like, sorry, you you're you don't qualify now.
SPEAKER_01Especially if it's easy to find out. Jesus is furious.
SPEAKER_03I'm like, what? I I went and shot one match, and you're telling me I I have to shoot as a pro? It just doesn't register. It it's it sets, yeah. I I felt like I was set up. Unfortunately, my pro was an am that got thrown into so he didn't know. I know better. I know my am is on the edge. You know if your am should not be an am at that match, and it's just on the pro, I think, to do to do the right thing, not to set a good pro would have told me I couldn't shoot as an am.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. I I think. Who is your who is your but do you want to disclose? We don't want to disclose, do we?
SPEAKER_03I I think everyone knows it was it was Joey Hargrave.
unknownOh my god.
SPEAKER_03It was uh it was his first it was his first season, and it was one of those where he couldn't shoot as an am. Why don't you shoot as a pro? So he shot as a pro. I signed up as just a dude, and I love it, get paired with him and and yeah, and meet. And that was yeah, because I went the first full day watching this thinking, this dude's a pro? It's like, man, this is gonna be easier than I thought.
SPEAKER_01Um by first grind standards. He was a pro. It's a pro.
SPEAKER_03By gap grind standards, yes, gap grind standards, yeah. Pro amps that means absolutely nothing.
SPEAKER_01The pro threshold is pretty low, and he is well the am threshold's pretty low too, right? I mean, like we got a lot of yes, a lot of spectrum right there, so yeah.
SPEAKER_03But yeah, he just I think he didn't know any any better, and then I just just yeah, it's just just bad, bad situation. I completely get it now at the time. And to this day, I don't think I've spoken to George Gardner since because when he said it to me, no, I it scared, it it traumatized me for really. Like, I can't even go up to the man now from that one moment.
SPEAKER_01I I could see that knowing knowing George pretty well, like he can't and Shannon.
SPEAKER_03I mean, both kind of scary figures.
SPEAKER_01That Friday and Saturday to figure all these guys out and be like, nope, not a pro. Or you're not an M, not an M, not an M. You know, and like and I think they're you know, I mean, George kind of likes that. He's George isn't gonna listen to this. Maybe somebody'll send him a clip, but you know, George is also kind of the guy like, nope, nobody's nobody's screwing around on my clock. I'm gonna find it out and I'm gonna tell them about it, you know? Yep, yeah.
SPEAKER_03And at the time I was just furious. I was so pissed. I wanted that, I was gonna get this. I finished second as the am, so I was gonna get a trophy. First ever trophy at a two-day event thrilled. So like, yeah, we can't, and then with phrases like, you can't walk the prize table. I'm like, fuck the prize table. I was like, fuck that out. Can I get the can I get my trophy, please? I'll leave. Uh no. Um but anyway, I get it. It's like that was that was the right move, 100%. But I just didn't, and there were four other of us. It wasn't just like this was me solo in a room. Yeah, four other people that that kind of got got axed as well. And yeah, yeah, I don't know the other ones' situations, but yeah, ours was just two people that were just freaking clueless.
SPEAKER_01So, you know, the AM shoot a modified course of fire with mostly easier targets. Uh you know, like you know, 18 out of 20 stages have easier targets, or you know, or some easier course of fire. But how many, how many impacts did you gap your pro by?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I I think I was like 174 out of I dropped a lot, I thought I was like 19 or 20 shots, so I wouldn't like I just killed it, but Joey Joey dropped at least. He was probably 119, I think fifth 55, 60. Sorry, Joey. Like we didn't even finish, I think, top 10 in the team thing. Like that's it. And typically if your am kills it at the grind, oh yeah, you do it. You just need to be alive. Yeah, yeah. Uh actually, no, you have to be good now at DM. Yeah, you do it. But but you you have to have the academic. But anyway, there's I think a lot of ams that just they're just don't know all this stuff.
SPEAKER_01And Joey came, Joey's from Alabama. Joey came up to the uh uh barrel maker, I think more than once. I think he came two or three times. Um and and the barrel maker was well, it was this last weekend. Uh the sack sizzler was the match that took over the barrel maker date. And uh we we we had we had some hot ones, you know, but I remember I remember specifically telling people like, hey, you need to stay hydrated this weekend. And you know, it's 90 degrees and humid, whatever. And Joey, we had one one heat-affected uh illness where somebody went down, it was Joey Hargrave from Alabama. Like goes up to goes up to Wisconsin and has a heat, you know, I don't want to say heat stroke or whatever, but he was down for the comp for an awful long time sitting in the shade drinking water.
SPEAKER_03If you'd given me like a multiple choice and he'd have been on there, I probably would have picked him for that to happen back then. That's old Joey. He he has all those funny posts about batch recaps and stats and all that.
SPEAKER_01I love it. Yeah. I love it. Derek, thank you for joining us this evening. Sorry the uh your uh your hit or miss on the video and and and audio there, but hopefully this turns out. It was uh fun having you on here, bud.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, no, I like it. I'm not used to doing anything like this, but um it's awesome. Well, hopefully, hopefully, what more this year?
SPEAKER_01You know?
SPEAKER_04Hopefully. Hopefully, I mean maybe I can do two more. Who knows? I mean, one is the goal for sure. That's the goal.
SPEAKER_01And you obviously changed. Go ahead, sorry, Ken. I was gonna ask one more question here. Looking, let's look at the Pro Series leaderboard here. You guys are third and fourth, the first two without three hundreds. Uh you guys both have three hundreds going into the finale.
SPEAKER_03I I don't think I will. I think Derek has a much better chance than I do, just statistically. I need two wins.
SPEAKER_04I would like to say that, but at the same time, you gotta think. I I mean, this is only my first two wins ever, so it's like just every time I'm breaking over a threshold to get you know even one more is you know is such a big deal for me versus you know, there are so many people, yeah, Organe, Baker, Catalic, that are only one more, and then but they need a qualifier.
SPEAKER_01You know, looking at Noel needs a qualifier, Austin needs a qualifier, Dale Rhodes.
SPEAKER_04Didn't didn't Catalic have a qualifier? Wasn't uh was Timio this year a qualifier or not?
SPEAKER_01Dale won't have a well Dale needs a qualifier. He's at 99.61. Um Keith. I mean so far every one of these got oh come on. Keith needs he had best in Texas, yeah, and he's got 99.2 in his qualify he needs a qualifier.
SPEAKER_03I mean everybody's gonna need a qualifier, so it's got like yeah, that MPA match it's a season could be could be tight. Tongue. Yeah, Derek, you clearly have, I think, yeah, the inside where you're potentially gonna be shooting some of those matches. And Tongue needs a way you're shooting right now. I don't want to hear, oh, I'm just one two. I've they've been so close together. You've clearly a different shooter right now than you were a year ago. Uh, I definitely see you getting another one. Ryan Beck.
SPEAKER_01Ryan Beck has a 100-point qualifier. He just he needs yeah. Ryan could do this after the Peterson match. He could he could be the next of 300.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah. But that's the top 10. Clean the field of Peterson blindfolded. That's that's his range. He wins 97% of every one day there.
SPEAKER_01So, I mean, like speaking of qualifiers, how many qualifiers does Justin Watts need to do anything here? Hey, Justin Watts is here. All right.
SPEAKER_02I'm only shot qualifiers on the show.
SPEAKER_01You got two that you didn't. Yeah, Snake River in there and uh why why is why are you on the Oki Showdown? What? Yeah. Show's May 2nd. You shot the Oki Showdown. Kinda. What's going on here, Justin? I don't know. I don't know. Couldn't tell me. All right. All right, Derek. Well, good luck. Hopefully we'll see you soon, man. Um, we're gonna we're gonna talk about this weekend uh this weekend's match, and um hope to see you on here again, man.
SPEAKER_04Cool. That's the goal. Get one more at least. Yeah, thanks, man. Um congrats on that silver press there. I see it in the background.
SPEAKER_03Dude, it looks better than the gold. Uh that's honestly what I wanted. We're we're good. You can tell yourself that. Yep. Oh my gosh. Jesus.
SPEAKER_04All right, skip labels to go to KM now. I'll see you guys. Hopefully, I'll see you all here again. Yep.
SPEAKER_01See ya. All right, Justin Watts. How are things, buddy? Thanks for joining us. Heck yeah. Hopefully, better. It's hot. It's hot.
SPEAKER_02My camera looked good. Yeah, it's hot. It's freaking Oklahoma. It's July, it's August.
SPEAKER_03Yes. Dude, it's hot as hell here. It was like 108 heat index here today. I was a little late getting up here and turning on the AC. I thought I was gonna have to go to like the sweat rag for a minute. It's toasty.
SPEAKER_02I heard I heard uh I heard Shrek arguing with my ass over whose swamp it is.
SPEAKER_01So that can tell you how hot it is here in Oklahoma.
SPEAKER_03There we go. See where this is headed.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, you see where this is headed. You know, the last time we this show's gonna end on a high note. So the Justin, we've we've texted about this, but the the podcast that we recorded uh actually statistically did exceptionally well. Uh that was an awesome podcast. I had a great time talking with you. Uh that was a lot of fun. That was just released a couple weeks back. Uh go check it out if you guys haven't yet. But um so we gotta end on a high note here. Uh you gotta you gotta give all the tips to everybody that's coming here. Um man, so 90, no, it was 101 today. It's 92 right now. Yeah. Yeah, and it's a little dark. Jeez. Uh Friday, 105. Oh, you get 105, yeah. Yeah, yep. And Saturday is only 97 and Sunday's 96. So you get some reprieve. But those temperatures don't matter, right? It's at over 90.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, because we're feeding the night. That's why we moved this to dark. Because, like, you know, you you typically had the heat stroke, right, this time of year. That was like I might my match took over the the heat stroke dates, right? Yep. So I basically did the opposite. Like, who wants to have a heat stroke? Like, that this doesn't even sound fun. Like, I don't know. I I liked the match. I thought it was a great match, but I don't particularly want to have a heat stroke. So, I mean, and you very well could have a heat stroke out there. Like, that's how hot it is. So, man, I I just did the opposite. I just like, you know what? Let's just shoot after dark. So much better.
SPEAKER_01So the low on Saturday is 67. Are you wearing a sweatshirt at 67 degrees? No.
SPEAKER_02Dude, I'm from like 50 to like obviously 100 and whatever, like I'm wearing shorts and a t-shirt. Yeah, and your and your uh hey dudes. And my hey dudes. I don't wear I dude I haven't owned a pair of hey dudes in probably like years. I don't even those no, like probably four years.
SPEAKER_01Are you serious? Okay. Yeah. Because I we came up, you came up with the rest of the JTAC guys, and we did training here in Wisconsin.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, that was the thing back then, man. Everybody had a pair of hey dudes, but uh yeah.
SPEAKER_01We did the whole training in it, and it was like 40 out and windy. It was well, I'm almost cold for Haydays, so they don't work on my back.
SPEAKER_02So I need some more support. I got Nikes. I I wear Nike uh running shoes now, so getting to that age, I gotta about to have some them diabetes shoes. You gotta wear that white new balance. The white balance. I do have a pair of white new balances. I actually do. They don't have any grass clippings on them because I don't mow my own yard. I got a guy for that, but oh man.
SPEAKER_01Well, let's let's take a look at your match here coming up. Uh click on Pro Series should be one of the first ones here. Yeah, should be the top problem. Yep.
SPEAKER_03Have you shot that night match? Have you shot it, Ken?
SPEAKER_01I have not. I've shot other I've shot winter night matches here in Wisconsin. We get a lot of dark conditions in the winter time match. I guess, yeah.
SPEAKER_03I came like probably three years ago, I think Justin. I came out there and shot it. I don't, yeah, something like that. But yes, I remember getting there and practicing a little bit during the day and thinking about the heat stroke. It was so freaking hot. Yeah, I said F this after so a few minutes. So shooting it at night, very different, obviously, but man, that was that was fun. I would 100% do it again, but I wasn't very good at it.
SPEAKER_02It it it takes a you gotta do it once, and then like Jeff, if you came back and did it again, it would be a different. You just gotta do it once to like or or just practice at home or something. But it it takes it's a different skill set because like there's mirage at night, like you can see trace at night, like people don't know that.
SPEAKER_03I can't wait to find out I can't see that either. Well, you can't and then people damn it, Justin. I can't see shit.
SPEAKER_02People people uh you know, people that come for the first time, they that they'll they'll be like, oh man, I don't have a I don't have an illuminated reticle. So they'll go find like whatever optic has the brightest illuminated reticle, and you don't want the brightest illuminated reticle. The first the first night match I ever had, you man, I don't you want on the lowest setting possible, but the first night match I ever did, Austin or Gain won it with no illumination.
SPEAKER_03So you know, someone told me that I was like, it made sense to me that you could shoot with no illumination, and someone was telling me, no, no, you can't, and that's good to hear. It's hard to find it.
SPEAKER_02It's hard to find your eye relief, okay? But what I tell people is like put your cheek, put your cheek on your stock where you like know you're comfortable, and then have somebody or put your finger there or something, and then put a piece of velcro right there, right? The fuzzy side of a velcro, and just stick it there so you can feel that same spot on your cheek every time.
SPEAKER_01It's like shooting archery, right? You come back to the same position.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, your same anchor point, like the archery, yes. Anchor point. You find that anchor point on the stock, and and it's just like I mean, the people who shot this match multiple years, like, and they're just like they're so good at it. Like, I mean, you know, people like I couldn't see nothing, I was dropping so many points, and then like Morgan will drop one, or you know, or Austin or Clay or something like that. Well, Clay hadn't tried in a while, but like uh, you know, Tate was down like two or something for like most of the match, you know, like you just have to do it, and it's it's a is a learning curve to it. And once you get that learning curve figured out, it's like it's nice, man. It's so nice, everybody's suppressed. This is like so chill. The only problem with the matches is it's so relaxing. It's so relaxed that it's slow. And I've had to do things to speed it up.
SPEAKER_01Like people looking for brass in the middle of the night. Like that's crazy.
SPEAKER_02Because I bought these, I bought these $80 freaking fish nets. They're like minnow nets, and they're so big, right? Last year I bought nets. Last year I bought fishnets and they were like too too small. So nobody wanted to use them. And I told everybody, like, no picking out brass. Like, have a brass catcher. Like, nobody's picking up brass.
SPEAKER_01Nobody wants to hear that. Nobody wants to hear that.
SPEAKER_02They don't. But like, and and then I gave them these fishnets, and they were like, they didn't want to use them because they were too small, and they were it was kind of hard to catch the brass. So this year I bought really big ones. And so it has a five-foot pole. Like, you don't even have to be in anybody's space. You can just like you can stick that thing up there and catch the brass. And then as soon as you that person's done shooting, drop your mag chamber flag off the firing line. That guy's got your brass. Next shooter, we're moving. Nobody's driving this year. That was what slowed down the match.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02For several years without letting people drive. And people would spiral out of control. Like if I said, like, I don't think I'm gonna let people drive this year. And then I'm like, you know, I always let people drive in my match. But then I start thinking about it, like, I don't know, I don't remember ever shooting a match where I got to drive. So like, what are they complaining about? It's like they've become accustomed, like, don't feed the bears, right? It's like they've become accustomed to it at my range. So when I do it, yeah, yeah, at my range. So when I say no driving, oh my gosh. The firing line is 300 yards long. I just walk freaking 18 miles at Hornady, okay? So I don't want to hear it. Like for real. Yeah. Uphill both ways. So literally uphill both ways. Up a hill, down the hill, back up the hill. Yeah. So so so I so I got the brass net, the catchers. We're not gonna let people drive because it takes so long for them to load their stuff into their vehicle just to drive 20 yards and set it down and then unload their stuff again. You gotta drive real slow so you're not running somebody over. Like it's just when it's just so much easier, just pick your stuff up, move 20 yards, put it down, be ready to go. So we did we did that on the second night. So the first night of last year's match, we went so slow. We got done like 4.30. And then the second night, I was like, no driving. Everybody's walking, like, no driving. And we got done at 1.30. It's three hours off the match.
SPEAKER_01So yeah. I got a controversial question for you, and I want both of you guys to answer this.
SPEAKER_05Oh, dang.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. With with us having, you know, 40, 48 pro matches, 49 pro matches. Um, and this one is the only one shot at night. Is it any different or should it be treated any differently than all the rest of the pro matches and the points here? No. Yeah, I knew I knew that's what you would say, Justin. Why why? How do you feel about Jeff? You shot it once. I don't know. It's different, right?
SPEAKER_03We're all right. I completely agree. I mean, there's enough there's enough other matches that, I mean, if you do that one just because it's night, then it's then it's what that one up there because no one goes, or that one there, cuz the wind doesn't button. I mean, look at the gap.
SPEAKER_02Look at look at how special the gap grind is, right? Like, or like or like Box Canyon. Box Canyon's a suppressor-only match, right? It's it's different because you got so many people who don't run a suppressor, and not everybody has a uh a San Trico, you know, site with a recoil X brake on it, or you know, the anchor break or whatever. Yeah, yeah. Like people are putting on the end of their suppressors now. Like, not everybody has that. So some some guy may have some old suppressor, some old long, heavy Thunder Beast, you know, that has a lot of recoil or something. Right? So there's a there's a curve there. So should Box Canyon be treated differently? I don't know. I mean I was I mean, part part I was trying to get a rise out of you, but I compensate the match by target size.
SPEAKER_01Sure.
SPEAKER_02So I compensate the the the being able to like the target acquisition is a little harder. Okay, because it's at night, right? It's not like you can go, oh, it's over by that cedar tree. But I specifically mark the targets a special way, and I advise all the shooters to attach a very you can buy those little small, tiny glow sticks. I tell them, you know, or the little turrets, the little uh the little wrist glow sticks. Yep, break one of those and tape it on the end of your muzzle so you can see the orientation of your muzzle. So when you see here, here here's the target out here, all right, and I just orient my muzzle in that direction, the target's gonna be in my scope.
SPEAKER_01You need like uh you need like uh iridium or tritium uh like a front sight from a uh a pistol that you mount that to the end of your rifle, right? So you just point it, yeah. Yeah, exactly.
SPEAKER_02The true glow, true glow lights? Yeah. No, but just uh put a put a put a um just tape uh a little one of the small chem lights. Just a small chem light on your in your model.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I got a bunch of them here. I got a bunch of them here for shooting night matches. I even had a 3D printed, I printed off a bunch of these things that would stick on to uh like clip onto my scope, and it was black on my side, but on the other side is where the the little night stick would go in there and it would so I could see my turret. But it wouldn't be hitting me in the face, right? But my my turret would go. But yeah, smart. There's lots of ways to skin a cat.
SPEAKER_02That's that's stuff that people like have shot the match before, like they figured out. It's just a fun match. It's a fun match. It's it is difficult, and it's easy. It it's easy in the course of a fire.
SPEAKER_01It's there's a different challenge.
SPEAKER_02It's a different challenge to it.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yep. So it's not a good thing.
SPEAKER_02So I think it should count differently in points, and though, I don't. I I think there's so many. Just look at the scores and compare those scores to another match, and then see if you think that the the the score should count differently. I think that you'll find the scores are relatively the same.
SPEAKER_01I think the hybrid scoring is gonna make everything relatively the same. It's all relative, right? I mean, like so it it it doesn't, it you know, that's that argument sort of is 2025, you know, or older. But yeah. Um so I I just filtered by pros that are here, Organe, Henry, uh point out uh Vogus, Dan Harride, uh Frazier still here from New Zealand. Man, I that guy, that guy is putting a lot of miles on over here in the States. Gage? Yes, he is. Is he gonna get is Gage gonna get his first win? I could see Gage winning this match.
SPEAKER_03I couldn't look up. Okay. Has he shot tonight match before, though? Yes, he has. He has not gauge much last year's results.
SPEAKER_02I don't know that I know it's right up the road. Yeah. I'm pretty sure that Gage has shot all my matches. I don't know that he hasn't shot one of my matches.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Caruso. Uh he won it last year, I think. Yep.
unknownYep.
SPEAKER_01Barnard uh from Kansas could do well. Shane Ward, Zane Kuhn, and the last one I'm gonna point out is Tate Streeter.
SPEAKER_02Zane Kuhn is not coming.
SPEAKER_01Actually shooting a match.
SPEAKER_02He had a tragedy uh befall his friends. Um not a not a great deal. Not a good reason not to come.
SPEAKER_01Okay. Um sorry to hear that.
SPEAKER_02It's not like he just had to work or something, like it was a terrible, terrible thing. Um so unfortunately, Zayn's not gonna be able to be there. But yeah. We're all feeling sorry for Zayn. I hate hearing that.
SPEAKER_01I hate hearing that. Yeah, it sucks.
SPEAKER_02It's not not the reason you want to miss a match.
SPEAKER_01Sure. And Tate's out. You see you just confirm. Tate did confirm? No, no, I'm sorry. Did you say he's coming or not coming?
SPEAKER_02Oh, I yeah, Tate's coming as far as I know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, because Oh, well, uh oh boy, he's gonna get me the business for scratching him out.
SPEAKER_02He promised uh he promised somebody uh that he would shoot with them. And Tate usually pretty well holds his word when he when he's if he tells you if Tate tells you hen dip snuff, you can you can check under a wing. So he's pretty serious about keeping his word on stuff, so I hear you.
SPEAKER_01I hear ya. Um yeah. I am so Justin, you want to do the pick 'em with us? You think you can pick five guys? Yeah, that's awful bowl of you.
SPEAKER_02That's awful bowl of you to let somebody that has control of the scoring pick the pick the list. Well, you know, we can all watch live now, Justin. Yeah, that's true. You're like, man, why don't we run two to a ten? I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. The score logs point everything out. I'll just say that.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01All right. So let's do this. Um, Justin, I'm gonna I'm gonna have you pick first. Um I got all the pros here. Do you have some semi-pros you want to select from? Or maybe Mark Smith amateur.
SPEAKER_02Man, do I how do I get to see your whole screen? Hold on. All right, I can see the screen. Here we go. Man, listen, you know how I am with technology. I'm on a phone right now because I don't I don't own a computer. Uh so I I know that. I know that. You texted me and said, are you on a phone or a computer? You should have known better. All right, so I well, you know. Alright, so I think you got uh Josh Longaker needs to go on there for sure. Well, hold on, hold on.
SPEAKER_01Time out, time out, time out. I'm gonna explain let me explain how this works just in case, Mr. Technology. You're gonna get the first pick. Jeff will get the second pick, then I'm gonna pick two. Or Jeff, do you want to go last so you get the double pick? I know how the draft works. I don't care. It's it's a snake draft, so they'll come back to you. You're gonna get two picks the second game. And then I get two. Yeah. I know how I I play fantasy football, so okay. Who is your first overall pick that we're gonna take off the board? Do I get to go first?
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_02I didn't hear you all ago.
SPEAKER_03Austin Organ. Yes. Damn it. Alright. What did you think he was gonna do, Ken? He said Josh Longenacre. I'm like, why is it?
SPEAKER_02I thought I thought you were picking so last time I thought we picked a bunch of people to like pull off there to choose. Oh, jeez. Yeah, I'll be back.
SPEAKER_03I'll take Matt Caruso. I'll take defending champ. He goes down.
SPEAKER_01There you oh boy. Um You know what? I like my boy Brandon Henry. I think I've picked Brandon at a number of matches. That's a good pick this shoot. That's a good pick.
SPEAKER_03He would seem like a good night shooter, but I need to see something. I hadn't seen much lately.
SPEAKER_01Nah, he I mean, you've shot with him enough down there in Tennessee. I think he Oh, when he's on. Man, he is on. I'm gonna I'm gonna take uh I'm gonna take Spectacles, Chain Ward. There you go. Those things can see though they got night vision built into them, man.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna take age then. We'll go with the youth.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_03That would be sweet if this is the first one.
SPEAKER_01I could see it happening. Yep. Justin, back to you. I want Josh and Tate. Oh, you're taking Tate too, huh? Okay. Yep. Josh and Tate. You know, I'm like kind of You're telling me there's no chance that Zane Koon's coming, right? No, there's no chance. What about hold on, what about Morgan King? He's not registered, and we're full.
SPEAKER_02Well, Zayn is selling his spot, though. I mean, the match is full. It's sold out. It's sold out. Uh Zane is selling his spot, so if Morgan wants it, then there's a possibility. But as of right now, Morgan's not. If Morgan comes and just happens to get in, you'd be stupid not to have him on your team. I'll say that.
SPEAKER_01But that yeah, no joke.
SPEAKER_03Well, you could take a flyer if you want to pick him, and if he shows, you got him. If he doesn't, you you got nobody. Well, you could take a wild card.
SPEAKER_02I'll just say if he's not on my team, he ain't getting my match, so yeah.
SPEAKER_03He shows up and he's like, yeah, sorry, dude. Sorry, Morgan, we're full, bud.
SPEAKER_04No room.
SPEAKER_01No room for you, buddy. With my last two picks, I'm taking Morgan King and Clay Black at her. And Austin Bushman.
SPEAKER_02Hey, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa, whoa. Hold on. No, no, no, no. Let me tell you, I can tell you right now, Clay's definitely not coming for sure. Clay will not be here. For 100%. He doesn't see your matches anymore. 10,000% he will not be here.
SPEAKER_01Bushman, I'm not sure how to. How much money do you think I'd have to pay him to be there?
SPEAKER_02I'll take Mike Burtis. I don't know how much you'd have to pay Clay. It would be a lot. Everybody's got a number. Well, uh he's also got a, you know, I'm not going to say the number, but a military contract that he's filling right now that is going to make your number really he's going to make your number really irrelevant.
SPEAKER_01So good for him. Good for him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, he's he's being he's very successful.
SPEAKER_01I hope that the military's buying some of the best ammo you can get. I love it. It is the best ammo you can get. It's not even negotiable. Not negotiable.
SPEAKER_03I probably well, I want to switch to it after this season.
SPEAKER_01You gotta pick a caliber, Jeff.
SPEAKER_03I hate loading now. Yeah, it shoots amazing.
SPEAKER_01You have a brand new press right behind you.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. As much as you shoot, Jeff, I would yeah, you could do, man, you could pull that stuff, stuff it in a magazine, and like win every match and not even question it. Like Yeah. I have not changed my zero. This entire barrel, I have not touched my zero. Not touched it. At all. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, no, it's it's very appealing.
SPEAKER_01Uh okay. Oh my gosh. Um Danny Matthews. I love that he's shooting. Do you remember Danny Matthews? Jeff Geary?
SPEAKER_03I I definitely remember. Was he an A-Team guy?
SPEAKER_01He would have been A-Team.
SPEAKER_03I remember an A-Team jersey with a Matthews on the back.
SPEAKER_01Super nice dude. That is cool to see him coming back.
SPEAKER_03Awesome.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Okay. Um. We're gonna take five. Still focusing here on probably the pros. I I like Dan Herr if he's got a dasher or something in hand. I think he can shoot.
SPEAKER_03I don't know if he's he shoots that I bet he does pretty well with that.
SPEAKER_01I bet he does pretty well with it too. I agree. Um I'm gonna I'm gonna take Corey Vogus.
SPEAKER_03I mean, pretty well is oh gosh. That's a good call.
unknownWith that.
SPEAKER_03That is a good call.
SPEAKER_01Um I'm gonna take Mark Peace. Okay, back to Jeff.
SPEAKER_03Oh, let me take Nick Barnard.
SPEAKER_01That's a good call right there. That's a sleeper. That's a sleeper. That's a sleeper for you. Kansas Nick Barnard. Me? Yes, sir. You get two of them, Justin.
SPEAKER_02Alright. I'm gonna go. I'm gonna uh did y'all did did y'all add a semi-pro?
SPEAKER_01Well, yeah, we have semi-screen.
SPEAKER_02Did anybody take a semi-pro yet? I'm about to shock. Nick and Terrace. Yeah, requirement. I want Billy Trachler. Okay. I don't think that's a shock. No. Look at my club matches and then tell me it's a shock. Uh and then I want Seth Stevens.
SPEAKER_01Seth Stevens. Ah, yeah, okay. He was a pro.
SPEAKER_02He's in a pros. Oh, it was. Yeah, right there. Seth number 11. Right above Zane. Yeah.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02I got a dream team, dude.
SPEAKER_03You know, I'm a I'm gonna take Show Walter.
SPEAKER_02He's he's gonna be. I can tell you right now there. I have between I have three people. Every one of those people on my on my roster have one matches at my ranch. Every one of them. Every one of them. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Oh man. I just gotta double check. There's anybody else in here, maybe ended up unclassified.
SPEAKER_02That didn't class? Yeah. Yeah. That didn't register their class. Well, I see one when you register now, it automatically. Josh Buford is a I'll just I'm just gonna throw that out there. Josh Buford is a solid, a solid call. 100%. He's he's local to you? OKC guy? I trained him myself. Yeah. Yep. Oh.
SPEAKER_05Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_03Let's see how the training is. I you know, you know who I'm gonna put some pressure on here? Chase Glenn.
SPEAKER_02Chase Glenn, 100%. Yeah. Where's he at? Someone needs to pick him.
SPEAKER_01I I took him. I took him. He's Marksman. He's my boy. I got I mean I have Brandon. I have Chase. If I had a sixth spot, I would take Brian Kelly to go with him.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, y'all have got marksman and semi-pro. I went safe. Dang it. I should have picked.
SPEAKER_01Do we do one more? Do we do one more? Oh, yeah, do one more.
SPEAKER_02Do one more. Why not?
SPEAKER_01I don't know. Why not? Let's see if I can.
SPEAKER_02Just put a sleeper. Put your sleeper on it. Put a sleeper on there. The dark, dark horse. Alright. No pro no no pros.
SPEAKER_01Sleeper. And we're talking about a night match. I love it. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03There's probably some sleepers for sure. I hope not in this case.
SPEAKER_01You pick sleeper. Oh you already called it. You already called it, didn't you? Josh? Yeah, I did. Yeah, I want to drop it. Okay. Got it. Okay.
SPEAKER_03I'm gonna take, I think, Dan Bergum. He's a semi-pro, so his is but I know him. Shout with him.
SPEAKER_01I know that name.
SPEAKER_03He could do well. If he's been shooting.
SPEAKER_01If he's been shooting. I see Danny Matthews. Oh yeah. Back in the day, he came to the first barrel maker, actually. Awesome, awesome dude. Um oh man. I'm gonna take Nick Kataras. Uh he's semi-pro. Excellent. Yep. I I I think I mean he's he's more of the sleeper. Like he he shot at tack for a while, now shooting open, like lights out. And I mean that in a silent night kind of way. Lights out. Yeah. We'll see.
SPEAKER_03Night, yep.
SPEAKER_01See? Is it is is it his first round, though? I will call him and give him everything I know about shooting at night. There you go.
SPEAKER_02There you go. Wouldn't be a bad idea. You know, if you have a friend who is shooting this match and you have shot it, wouldn't be a bad idea. This is to everybody. Wouldn't be a bad idea to reach out to him and be like, hey, I see you register for the match. Here's some tips. Because man, there can be a learning curve to this. I mean, I've had so many people quit this match. Like, just quit. Just uh not gonna not gonna call them out, but they just straight up quit because they're like, man, I I can't figure this out. I mean, there's a learning curve to it. Um there is. I I just texted them. Yeah. So now that made a like you said, like having the having the little piece uh that that blocks the light from your eye. I mean, uh Chase, we're me and Chase were talking on the phone. Me and Chase were talking on the phone earlier and uh Um yesterday and he was talking about, you know, there was a guy catching his brass and he was like, hey man, I appreciate you catching my brass, but like, can you just turn that light off? Like, I don't really care about my brass. Like, get that light out of my face. I don't want a red or white light in my eyes. Yes. Yep. Yeah. Yeah. No white lights allowed. You will get disqualified for white lights.
SPEAKER_03You will. Yes. I can't. Including your eye.
SPEAKER_02That is the rule. That has been a rule since day one. No white lights allowed. Absolutely. It's like a like because if you if you if I hit you with a white light during my night match, you're done. Like you're not seen for two stages.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02It's an absolute like. And the first year we had some people, I'm not gonna say their name, were intentionally hitting people with a white light. Um it it became a big deal. Um it became a big deal. Um it it like like I had to talk with, you know, the version of Ken over the match. Like because uh this this was became such a deal that they were like, hey, like this was intentional, and this was happening repeatedly, and you know, I'm like, all right, well, like I I will fix it, I'll make sure that doesn't happen again.
SPEAKER_01Yep, yep. So hey, I I just got a text back from Nick Guterres, and he might not be at the match for the same reason as Zane Kuhn's not there. Oh, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, um, well that I feel like that gives you swap it out for Danny.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I mean that gives you a I'm gonna swap it out for Danny. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01There you go. Dang. Yeah, that sucks. Sucks, man. There's like there's like three of them.
SPEAKER_02It's like it's Zane and Nick and somebody else uh that's not able to come. I think Kreston Glantz, the the the guy at the top, Kreston Glantz, he bought one of those, maybe he may have bought Nick's spot or one of those spots. He bought a spot and was added last minute to the match. Like he he he was added yesterday, I think, to the match. Bummer. Yeah, for there's a lot of people trying to buy buy spots right now. There's I've seen several posts about of people, you know, comment on on my Facebook, you know, asking if there was a spot, they're trying to get in.
SPEAKER_01And well, yeah, I mean Nick and Zayn's bot are are open. Um man, sorry guys, it uh for the circumstances.
SPEAKER_02So so for anybody, I want to clarify something. So originally, right, there's 81 spots available, all right? Nine squads of nine. And if you will see, we have like 85 registered, okay, and there's a reason for that. Yeah. Okay, it was because it wasn't in anybody playing favorites or like I let so-and-so in, but not this person. It strictly came down to sponsorship uh sponsorship agreements.
SPEAKER_01Sure.
SPEAKER_02And you know, I you know, these people donated uh and and with the uh you know idea that they were getting so many spots, and then the match sold out like this, and they're like, oh hey, my guy didn't get in. And so I had to make extra spots.
SPEAKER_01Yep.
SPEAKER_02I get it. Just for sponsorship, I think we those were only sponsorship.
SPEAKER_01I think we figured it out though. This uh this guy signed up. This this has to be this has to be Morgan King. Hingle McKringleberry has to be Morgan King. It's gotta be.
SPEAKER_02Why do you think that?
SPEAKER_01It's not Morgan.
SPEAKER_03I can tell you who it is. That's definitely not Morgan. I'm not gonna be here.
SPEAKER_02I can probably tell you who it is, but you don't want to out him? No. No. Because I I don't know the reason for that. It's not my business. Not your business. Not my business. That's your business. It's your business, not mine.
SPEAKER_03That's fair.
SPEAKER_01Fair. Fair. Alright. Well, for the Texas boys that can't make it, uh, we're hearts with you. We're sorry about that this weekend. And um, yeah, wish there were better circumstances. Justin, you have an awesome match. Hopefully things flow uh according to your plan, and you don't have to uh yell at anybody this year. Okay, let's be able to do that. I'm not yelling at anybody, dude. I don't even care. I'm not yelling at anybody.
SPEAKER_02I I I learned my lesson, dude. You can swap my hand one time. I learned I'm a I'm a fast learner.
SPEAKER_03Yep. I hear you. Awesome. I get it though. It's typically it seems like legit stuff whenever I do hear about yeah, hear about it. It was for sure legit stuff that I was yelling to people about. But yeah, sure. See, that makes sense. I get that.
SPEAKER_02Sure. Like, if I say, like, you know, like no, no, you know, don't no driving over here, and then like all of a sudden there's somebody driving up there, and they're and I'm like, what are you doing? And you're like, well, you know, I I left my ammo in my truck, and like I'm you know, I'm I was up next, so I didn't want to like walk, you know, and I'm like, yeah, whatever, dude. Like, no.
SPEAKER_01No, no, no, no. No excuses that bowled boy. Yeah, awesome. No excuses. All right. Well, let's wrap it up. Appreciate you guys being on here tonight. And um, yeah, have a great have a great uh weekend. Try to get a little sleep this weekend, Justin, sometime during the day.
SPEAKER_02There will be no sleep, man. It's it's it's it's a rough weekend for me because I have to run the like I still have a business to run during the day. I agree. Right, and then a match to run at night, so it sucks. So you really don't get hardly any sleep. No, none. Like my wife, because my wife, my wife owns a restaurant, so if you own a restaurant, you you you have two spouses, right? So yeah, you're you're you're married to that thing. You're right. You're married to it. Yeah, you're probably married to this PRS. Like, you probably have two two wives, and and and Missy has two husbands, but like that's how it is at my house. I own multiple businesses, and my wife owns a restaurant. Like it is for this. Like, between us, we have a nephew that we have to babysit a lot, and then we have our kids and then all our businesses, like, man, there's no sleep. This weekend sucks for me. Like, I hate it. It's so bad. Yeah, that is impressive. So I go that you do that. Nah, wouldn't do it. All right, everybody threw a fiddle they wanted this match, they were like, hey, I I don't I don't want to come back and shoot your match in j in August, so unless you make it to you.
SPEAKER_01I was there in August, it wasn't that bad.
SPEAKER_02It was I I was there the last year you ran it. Well, you were there the last year when everybody was in in the RO, or I mean in the match brief when everybody's like, you need to bring back Silent Knight.
SPEAKER_01Were you there for that? I was there for that, yeah.
SPEAKER_02I was like, okay, I'll bring it back. I mean, if that's I get it. Like it sucks. It's hot out here. Like it sucks. It sold out. It's all good, man. It always sells out, man. It sold out last year at 130, and that was the dumbest thing I ever did. It went from 100, then it was 110, then I moved to 120, and I finally settled at 130, and I'm like, that's enough, dude. That's that's 10 squads of 13. I can't do anymore. And it was too, that was rough. That was too much. So we cut it back this year. Good. So this match should be way faster, way smoother.
SPEAKER_01Should be a good weekend, man. Yeah, for sure. Good weekend. All right. Well talk to you guys. Thank you. All right, see you, buddy. See you, Jeff.
