In this episode of the PRS podcast, Greg Stewart joins us to talk about the current state of PRS Rimfire, the road to the National Championship, how regional finales and qualifying points work, and where the series could go from here.
We break down exactly what shooters need to do to qualify for their regional finale, how those results impact the National Championship standings, and how invitations to Nationals will roll out.
Then we get into a bigger conversation: should PRS Rimfire matches be harder?
We talk about the importance of challenging shooters, developing better wind-reading and decision-making skills, and even float the idea of a separate "Punisher Series" built around tougher one-day rimfire matches.
We also cover:
• How to qualify for a PRS Rimfire Regional Finale
• The path to the PRS Rimfire National Championship
• Regional finale points and national standings
• PRS hybrid scoring and whether it belongs in Rimfire
• How National Championship invites will work
• What to expect at K&M for Nationals
• Why harder matches can create better shooters
• The idea for a PRS Rimfire "Punisher Series"
• Upcoming regional championships and shooters to watch
• The Anschutz 1727 rifle giveaway

unknownStandby. You're ready.
SPEAKER_01Stand by all right, welcome to the PRS Rimfire podcast. Uh yes, sir.
SPEAKER_00Yes, sir.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Here with my good buddy Greg Stewart, all things rim fire, uh looking great, clean shaven with the mustache.
SPEAKER_02Well, I only shaved because I saw you'd been glossing this mustache in all your other podcasts, so I wanted to mirror that. And uh you did what I normally do.
SPEAKER_01I let you down, man. I this is this is uh this is probably the new look for me. I man, I clean shaving is is a task now. And I I hate to say that because like I I don't go into the office like I used to every every day, and you know, it's like an every other day you shave type thing, you know, and and now uh I'm unkept. You know, I work from home or work from our little PRS office. So oh man, it's good to see your face.
SPEAKER_02This is a rare event for me to shave my face. I had 24 and a half years uh reserved. Nope. Got out of that and I don't shave.
SPEAKER_01Had you had you texted me, we would have we would have been twinsies here. Might have even cut off the little hair I had left. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. Yeah, yeah. No, this is good. We've had some requests for some Rinfire audiences, so glad to be cool books.
SPEAKER_01Here we go. I think um the the schedule I have in my mind is that we'll record uh a decent number of these throughout the I'll say the Rimfire Championship season because the the regional rimfire um uh finales are really meaningful in the grand scheme of all things rim fire. Um it's a little different than we than we run for the regional series center fire and a pro series center fire, um, which is cool. Like I love that that uh I love that there's so much weight put on these finales and that this is the the path to the championship. So we'll talk about that. Um I want to go through what uh what the finales are that are coming up um and basically just keep a conversation going. So if you're a rimfire fanatic, um if you have plans of shooting the finale, I think you're gonna like the content that we put out for the next uh few months, and then then I think uh we'll start with some regular guests. Like we'll pull on some uh regional champions and and and talk all things rim fire. So let's take a brief break in the show to give a shout out to one of our partners, Garmin, official chronograph and ballistic smartwatch. Whether you're building a load, confirming your data, or getting ready for match day, Garmin has become an essential part of the precision rifle toolkit. From the zero chronograph to the tactics ballistic smartwatch, Garmin gives shooters fast, reliable data exactly when they need it. Less time managing equipment means more time focused on making impacts. Go check them out. Garmin.com. Greg, I appreciate you spending some time with us today. Um let's let's talk about that. What's what is the path? You know, if I if I'm a local rimfire shooter and um maybe I'll only shoot at my own range because that's the only one within you know 60 miles or something like that. It's like I just shoot here. Uh, but I'm really into this. Uh how how do you how do you explain to that individual, like, hey man, there's a lot more out there if you have aspirations for this?
SPEAKER_02Sure. Yeah. So I guess at first, if your goal is to make your regional finale, how do you do that? Right. So you shoot at least two regular matches and one qualifier, and the qualifiers are now noted on impact scoring in our website. You can go on there and see where they are. You can even sort by qualifier only. So that's pretty neat. You can look all regions, qualifier only, and uh you'll see all the qualifiers pop up.
SPEAKER_01Finally. I know, I know this is some heartburn for a lot of folks, like because it it just took it took longer than we than we expected to get what to sort by region, sort by qualifiers, and all that.
SPEAKER_02But um, well the feedback's making it better.
SPEAKER_01So it it is, it is. So if I'm in a great likes region, um and I'm looking at upcoming matches, and I am in a great lakes region. I'm up here in Wisconsin. Yep, red, yeah, red flannel there in Michigan.
SPEAKER_02So good shooters at that one.
SPEAKER_01I really so you can click on this and you can. Well, uh yeah, I think I have a little different option here, but V results. Uh hey, my my local MD's heading over there. Andy Cars. Um Eric Pilsitz. He's he's a he's a good rim fire shooter, I believe. Um Kirby's Kirby's solid. I hope I'm not skipping Lily Knapp is yeah, voodoo killer. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Ron's gonna be there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, Ron Varan. Yep. Uh he's two-time golden bullet champion.
SPEAKER_02Yep. We didn't have the bullet back then, but yeah.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you're right.
SPEAKER_02The first bullet.
SPEAKER_01First bullet should have got, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then the first the first national skill.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Yep. Um, and then uh Ryan said, he absolutely whooped my ass. Uh he came to Wisconsin, he shot a match.
SPEAKER_02Uh I guess he shooted him a few times this year.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, he he's a good shooter. He uh we had um uh Eric Leopold came up from South Carolina, and Ryan came over from Michigan. Um, and it went Ryan, Eric me. And I thought I shot a pretty decent match. I had like four or five uh drops that I was just like a total mental, you know, shooting a wrong target, wrong order or something like that. I'm like, dang, and then I think Eric beat me by five impacts. Um, and I think Ryan beat Eric by three or four. I mean, he just absolutely whooped our ass, only dropped like five all day. So um, all right, so let's back up a little bit here. Um, if I'm you know, I can go select my region, I can see which ones are qualifiers. You need a qualifier, right? And the and that's the purpose of the qualifier is is for anybody that's uh regional championship bound, national bound, it uh if you put a qualifier in something you because you need it, now you you draw a little bit more talent into one match, right? Like that's that's the intent. So that you know you're you're you're getting a little bit better idea of how well of a shooter you are against solid peers, right?
SPEAKER_02Mm-hmm. Mm-hmm. Yeah. Yeah, and it makes it more meaningful too. I mean, you could maybe make you step out of your little local club or your bigger local your bigger club that maybe you're as local to you and maybe go to more ranges by by uh having a select number of qualifiers. Your club might get one. And if you win, that's great. But if you're second, third, fourth, depending on the margin, it could be meaningful.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, if you if you didn't get the points that you're looking for out of that qualifier, like, well, now now do what you said here, right? Like go to your region, sort by the sort by the region, sort by qualifiers, take a look, find, find what you're you know, that next qualifier so you have an opportunity.
SPEAKER_02Um, and there's there's seven left for this season. Uh there's Rocky Mountain South has one, Great Lakes, Southeast, Atlantic has one still, New England and uh Midwest has two, but they're such a big region they cover, you know, yeah, Dakotas. So what might be a state away could be eight hours. So that's why they they've got a couple extra ones. But yeah, yeah. Oh my gosh. So I'd say that's the first thing is build build your best score up to 300. Um shoot what's comfortable for your budget and time, you know. Uh and obviously, like I I prefer to travel. I I shot mostly qualifiers this year, just uh, you know, had maybe a little bit harder matches, a bit a bigger draw for what I was shooting at just because I'm trying to train for uh the last USA qualifiers coming up in up in uh September. But okay. Yeah, so that would be the first thing. I'd say build that build that base for your 300, get uh into your regional. I don't believe I believe everyone that wanted an invite for every regional is able to go. I think we went over 100 shooters for any one of them. Most of the venues can go well over that. Uh our first one we just had was in uh central last week, and it was at uh Twisted Barrel in Arkansas, so that went well.
SPEAKER_01Um and and I'm finally sharing my screen. Sorry, I realized I realized after we did that whole segment about looking for matches and stuff, I wasn't sharing my screen. I was just clicking around for my own benefit.
SPEAKER_02No, we didn't notice. We didn't notice at all. No worries.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Um, so if I if I on the on a website, um uh actually before any of this, I want to point out if you go to the website, click series, click rim fire series, at the top, there's win and and schutz 1727 APR. This is a unbelievable rifle. Um I actually have a dude, I have a 1727 here with the Fortner action. Um I I struggle with it because like the the very so I'll I'll I'll close the action like I should, right? I'll I I pull the trigger, you know, and I have a great trigger press, whatever. Watch the bullet, and then I immediately try to pull up on the I try to pull up on the uh the action release. And it's like, no, no, no. Straight back, straight forward, you know, and then it like it's always the first shot of every stage. Like I'm like, oh no, no, no, no, both forward and back. But um, what a it's an awesome, awesome rifle package. There's an enter now button here. We're giving away this at the Rimfire National Championships. Um, you don't have to be present to win, but um, anybody listening to this podcast hopefully is gonna be there, right? Because they're they're uh you know Rimfire fanatics here. So um please go enter to win that. Uh we want to give it away at the finale, and it's uh it's unbelievable. And it's painted in stars and stripes. Like it's it is a cool, cool, cool rifle. But uh, anyways, so uh I'm gonna look at season standings. And if I go instead of all regions, if I hit central, um, they're the only ones that uh yep. Um and it so John Stahulik must have won that match.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I'm yeah, he put six points, I think, on the second place.
SPEAKER_01So then Michael Michael Post and Clayton Du set and all the rest of them, like if it if you get gap, like man, that makes your national championship tough.
SPEAKER_02Which which we can all, I mean, everybody in this region in the series can thank Clayton because two years ago he put forth a rule because these regionals used to be two X points. Yep. So take that gap and double it, right? And your whole national championship came down to your regional, and it's kind of a relic of center fire, doesn't have a national championship for the regional series, they have the pro series championship. So those regional finales with the 200x for center fire regionals are kind of a big separator, right? They are it helps you if you shoot the regional good, you like you can win your region, and that's really the end of it. Yep, but with rimfire, it was like that originally because the center fire rules, and then you know you have a 2x there and then a 2x at national. So Clayton put forth a rule where we got down to 1x. Uh, so you're just a hundred points for the match, which I think was smart. He put together a great methodology for it. So I voted in, and and then uh so now this is a hundred-point match versus 200-point match. And yeah, and uh it's a one-day match.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. So here's a question for you. Um, if you followed the Pro Series uh much this year, and I so you know that this is the first year, though. I'm pretty sure that you're aware of this, that we've gone to hybrid scoring for the Pro Series Open. Um percent. So yeah, what that is, um basically it's uh 50% of your score comes from you know impacts versus impacts versus a winner, right? So if uh if if you win, you still get 100 you know overall. But if um say you're second and you know you shot 90 impacts and the winner shot 100 impacts, um, you get 90 points. That's half of your score. The other half of your score comes from what place you finished. So let's say there's a hundred shooters, and you know, so each place basically is one point, and you finish second. Um now you get you know, you finish second, so you you you you beat 99, you know, you're 99, you get 99 points for that second place, and then you get 90 out of 100 for your uh impacts, so then the average of that you would get 94 and a half, right? Sure. Um, and I think uh and this is just my my opinion here, uh I think it would um I think it would impact Rimfire uh in a very positive way.
SPEAKER_02Well, no, it wouldn't. Okay. It wouldn't. It wouldn't.
SPEAKER_01Oh boy, now we're getting controversial.
SPEAKER_00Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Uh no, this isn't it's just math, man. It can it's just math. You want me to tell you why it's different? Sure. How many how many shooters are at your price center fire matches?
SPEAKER_01I got it. Yeah, so if there's 150 shooters, each place, right? Yeah, if each point is. Yeah, so each place is gonna be yeah.
SPEAKER_02You can't 30. Yeah, you can your your test points further than out of 20 is getting 50. And they just wouldn't show up anymore. Well, but well, you know, they would be like, this isn't this is crushing my points. When it's out of a hundred, it's it's fine. And we saw this, we we did this for the USA scoring last cycle. We got down towards the end of the year, we went from 85 people shooting a match to 30, and then you saw, you know, you just this crush of sc of score, and it's not really because the shooter didn't do well, it's because there wasn't enough people to be there. Yeah, and we still had the 15 best shooters in the country there, right? But yeah, it didn't matter. You didn't have the the the base of the other people below them because they were just like, Well, why am I gonna try to compete against these guys?
SPEAKER_00You're right, you're right.
SPEAKER_02So you need that. So what we did to fix that was we made every one out of a hundred. So if you were second, you got 99. So if it was a match less than 100 people, it went off of the second place is 99, third place is 90. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_01I I like that. I I guess uh and here, let's take a look at that central regional uh rim fire finale here. So John Stahook won it, Jonathan Orbis second, Reagan Stomer third. Holy cow!
SPEAKER_00Right.
SPEAKER_01I mean, yeah. So Michael Post and Clayton Du. Yeah, yeah. Michael Post and Clayton Du Set, who are now 2-3 in the region, um actually finished uh 5th and 6th. That's crazy. So um all right. It was Wendy.
SPEAKER_02That was Wendy there.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I see that dropped 11. John John dropped 11 and beat Jonathan Orvis by eight. That is absolutely wild. Okay. So, but what it what uh and there was uh yeah, 60 66 shooters here, pretty decent turnout. Um what this would do for us if the if it was a hybrid scoring, and I really like that out of a hundred thing, because it like in you just regardless make it a hundred, you know, go down five points. Um in the uh in the regional standings now, uh Clayton and Michael, they would be closer. They wouldn't be they wouldn't be like 396 or 395, but at least they'd be have a little bit more striking distance when it comes to a national finale, giving them a little bit more opportunity, right? So like and that's what the hybrid scoring should do, right? Any any of those scenarios where somebody gaps the field, like it kind of tightens the score up. And anywhere where the field is like, you know, drop drop one, drop two, you know, and there's there's 10 people tied for second place or third place, and all the scores are really compact, it kind of spreads those guys out. So like it has that sort of uh sort of effect that it really it keeps things competitive uh for everybody, right? Sure. Um, so I don't know, maybe that is something we want to look at for uh you know we it I I don't want to make things complicated, and I certainly don't want to.
SPEAKER_02Well, let me tell you the difference between rim fire shooters and fire shooters.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Well, okay. Uh ring fire shooters won't have the patience for this. So I mean, we're that we're we're not investing the same amount of money and time. We're not, we're not traveling across the country unless you're shooting the USA series, and even that it's a pretty capital-intensive, time off intensive. Seriously. Yeah. We're we're we're generally not doing that, right? So uh the sim it just in my mind, unless we have like a pro series approach where you know the guys at the top of the room part, they're not complaining that another guy has a 400 because their ego can't handle it.
SPEAKER_00Um I hear what you did there.
SPEAKER_02I thought this guy's match, and it was harder than this guy's match, therefore I'm better than him, type thing. Yeah, um, we're just shooting. Uh, we're probably more about enjoying the community and less about like where I struck where I structure and the pecking order of the top 10 best and the talents deeper in centerfire. Um they're just I don't think that the centerfire guys are willing to deal with like matches that aren't as challenging and the things that happen to you in rimfire that you you can't control, right? Yeah, you have a really talented center fire guy, you guys just shoot a couple rim fire matches like, oh my god, like yeah, by both me to do what I was supposed to do, you know. Yeah, like that's rim fire, yeah. It's okay. Keep pushing.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I guess and I'm coming from a standpoint where I'm looking at Michael and and Clayton. I'm like, oh, I wish you guys had a better chance at the national finale now, but it's just like dang that. I mean he got kind of got the kicked in, and and that hurts, you know, in the long range, but uh all the points that you're saying, right? Like these guys, these guys are probably so well, they're both still gonna come to the national finale and don't have a lot of people.
SPEAKER_02Where if you took people's three best and Clayton, I think he shot them all, and he'd be in the top five overall if he combines three best scores. So he's very consistent, a really good shooter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah. So yeah, yeah, 25, 24, 23. Yeah, he's there. Yeah, and then the first two were in Texas, so he's definitely there. Yeah, he was there. 2021's there. I yeah, oh, and uh 2020 he wasn't uh yeah.
SPEAKER_02So here's the other piece. I how how much time have you spent fielding the how's my score calculated? Because we've done the USA, we've done the USA calls this way twice with with placement percent, and we've got people with that are invested in time and money, and they're you know smart top-end shooters, and I've had to explain placement percent every single time. So this time we didn't do it because I noticed I ran it both ways last cycle, and it didn't change the top 10 shooters and and open and and factory.
SPEAKER_00It doesn't change it. Okay, uh didn't change it.
SPEAKER_02It might have changed uh were they stacked between open and and uh and and and factory, but it it didn't it didn't change the top 10. I think I lost like seven points, so I'd yeah maybe be a little higher in open, but uh it didn't move anybody. No, it didn't it didn't shift it. So my thought was like what are we doing? And just yeah, creating more questions to answer the room fire side at least.
SPEAKER_01But so I'll I'll if anybody wants to know more about this.
SPEAKER_02If I click on my my Labrador is getting uh a little needy, I'm gonna put her in the that's all right, that's all right.
SPEAKER_01Well, I'll I'll kind of go through this and explain this. So if you click on about and then come down here to pro and regional rules, um looks like it opens right where I left off.
SPEAKER_02So if I'm looking at the pro and regional rules, um yeah, and if you're on the website and you want to find the rules, you go to about and go the whole way down to the bottom, and then on the bottom of that page you'll have room file rules, regional rules, price read rules.
SPEAKER_01Yep. And we're gonna go um scroll down. Actually be smarter, just click on scoring. All right, so hybrid scoring here. Um I I just just in case people want to know this, and you already said like how much time did you spend explaining this?
SPEAKER_02It's way too much.
SPEAKER_01It well and then it is way too much, and then we we we put it out there um, you know, a number of different ways. And it wasn't until I think it was Alan Ernst, who's a pro series shooter from California, and he's like a I mean he's a data analytics freak. Uh but he's like in the fifty percent that comes from placement, he says he he boil it down. Um it's the oh I thought I thought I had it written down here. Um shooters your score divided by the winner's score times a hundred. So that's that's that's that. Uh number of shooters you beat versus the number of shooters you competed against. So if you put it that way, then you you you eliminate the like, well, how many are there? Minus one, you know, take yourself out. So it's the number of shooters you beat versus how many you competed against. So if you finish third out of 75, right? You beat you you beat 71, right? 75, 74, 7. So you beat 72 shooters out of 75. So it's just that easy. But if we went like out of a hundred, now it's like, yeah. I mean, maybe it's easier, maybe it's not, but um we're not going to that.
SPEAKER_02Uh but if if we're you know what it's needed at the pro-level series because it's very tight and close. Yeah. And those guys and girls invest a lot of money and time, like way more than chasing a rim fire series, right? I mean, they're they're traveling, they're they're in a plane. It's essentially like a like a US scene's qualifier series every single year. It's super capital intensive and it's travel intensive. Um, yeah, and they want that separation at the top because they're working really, really hard um to get that really tight placement. So it's it's corrupted, but on the room fire side, it's it's different.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and and you're you're actually out of anybody that I know, it'd probably be you and Cloy Blackheader both do more math on all of this stuff than anybody. If you're saying, like, hey, it doesn't really change anything. Like, I'm good with simple.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah. For the room fire side, but yeah, yeah. For the rim fire side it doesn't, yeah. And we have two stacked, the other other thing is we have like two-stacked, we have that regional finale that goes into ours. So if they all had to shoot the same match, which is which is another separator, and that's what really changes to go into a national. Um, yeah. You know, you look at last year, Simmons won the national championship, but he had to win by like six because he got, you know, um uh Kim Hennessy won their regional finale, right? And I think she won by like two or three. So he's coming in with a two with a 397 thinking, well, I'm gonna shoot well and probably win, but you know, to to make that gap up is a lot. And he did it.
SPEAKER_01So he didn't he the the national finale last year, didn't yeah. I mean he gapped by over 10, wasn't it?
SPEAKER_02Um, I think maybe six or eight, something like that. Him and I shot together. Uh, but it was tight after that. It was like I think I was tied for third in points, but tenth or something like it. You know, it was really tight.
SPEAKER_01Let's uh sound right in one day one. Yeah, I went to impact scoring. If you scroll down, you'll see like you can you can view shooter profiles. Um, I shouldn't do the match 20. Yeah, yeah. I like yeah, I like kind of doing this 2025 rim fire series. Let's click on that match view results. Yeah, Simmons.
SPEAKER_02I was trying to add it up in my head, trying to figure out, trying to figure out okay, what do you need to win by? And I he wasn't doing it. I was like, I think he got it. He's like, ah you're right.
SPEAKER_01He won by five, but it's worth 200, so it makes it like a yeah, 10 point. Yeah, yeah, which is crazy. Um, all right. So let's take a look at uh let's take a look at the leaderboard here for rimfire series. If if we look, you know, there was what 66 shooters, so I would expect about 60 guys. You know, the top 60 are all gonna be those central region guys that shot those finales, they're all over 300. Um, what am I doing? I'm gonna do entries, look by 100 here. So these guys are all over 300 looking really good. National standings until all the other regions have their finales, but we have we're gonna count how many 300s are here. So starting at 55, there's a 300 all the way down to well, 90, 93rd basically. So there's yeah, uh how many is that 40?
SPEAKER_02You know, yeah, how many other qualifiers? That's the other piece. Is this noting qualifiers? I don't think it's removing defense who don't have a qualifier.
SPEAKER_00Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_02There could be a 300 and you just don't have a qualifier. So that's that's the hard thing to get, right? Yeah. I mean, I shot seven qualifiers at least this year. Yeah, you know, USA matches for qualifiers.
SPEAKER_01And then how many did you win though? How many of those did you win?
SPEAKER_02Two, and then I dropped a one point on one and one point on another and got second on two of them.
SPEAKER_01So it's a two first and two seconds. That's that's awesome.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, but someone cleaned both matches, the ones I shot by just once. Yep.
unknownCleaned.
SPEAKER_02They did a great they did a great mental job. They they stayed in there and they were there every single stage, and they made sure that they didn't make a mental mistake. And that was uh that was the end of that day.
SPEAKER_01And didn't get rim fired, didn't have one that was like, what happened? Yep, yeah. Um, all right, so we have all those at 300, uh, which by the end of all of our all of our regional finales, which the last one is scheduled for September 5th, um, then all of the standings should shake out. Let's take a brief break in the show to give a shout out to one of our partners, Garmin, official chronograph and ballistic smartwatch. Garmin.com. How do we what what's the process after that last finale? Like how do we where do we go from the first time?
SPEAKER_02Let's walk up to that. Let's let's walk up to that, right? So, first we put a rule in place that all these finales need to be done 45 days prior. Because about two years ago, I mean, we had clubs scheduling the regional finale the week before the national championship. So we got that in order. Now they're all in August, September. I kind of see this time frame of when these national championships are staying around this October 9.
unknownAll right.
SPEAKER_02Always award the weekend of the gap grind, maybe work the week after or the week the week before. Um, and then working up to that September 5th date. This weekend, we've got uh Northwest and foothills. Yep. Um, and all these will be an impact. You can go on and follow along live scoring. Yep. Um, then the following week, we've got four. We've got Atlantic. That's that, I believe Cavalier. Um New England uh is gonna, I'm not sure which range. It's not at Shipdog this year, it's a different one. Uh Rocky Mountain South and Southwest. And then the August 29th, the next weekend, we've got Great Lakes in the way and uh in my region, Northeast, and then we've got the last weekend southeast uh at Gunline and uh Midwest is at uh Gap. So that's leading out to that September 5th date. On the 7th, I will be pushing out the first round of invites. So there's kind of two two buckets of invites, and this is based off of 250 shooters. We're gonna have more than that at KM. I think we can go up to 300, which is a lot of people per squad, but we'll see if we get there.
SPEAKER_01Um I I'll say this about KM. Like there's no other match in that I'm aware of that runs uh more fluid. Like it will uh you, you know, if you if anybody shopped the Gat Grind where there's you know 400 shooters, like somehow you get through 400 shooters in two days where it's just like Shannon Kay has his process down how people move, it will flow perfect. Like 300 shooters and big squads won't feel like 300 shooters and big squads. Like it uh, yeah. You're not gonna you're not gonna have to take a nap between shooting. I'll tell you that.
SPEAKER_02I'm excited to go. I've never been to the ranch.
SPEAKER_01So oh my gosh. I I wish I could be on your shoulder as you're pulling into that place because it like it's it like it should make you feel tingly all over when you like you arrive there and you're like, wow, this is the Augustine.
SPEAKER_02My dad and I used to shoot a lot of pistols. Okay. I've kind of shot every sport that there is. Yeah, and this is just the one I've not moved on from. We used to shoot a lot of like IBTA pistols and stuff. We weren't good, but we would go down to uh no, not even we were top tier like that. We just had fun. And someone told us to go see a night, go to a national level event. So I looked up where these shoots were at, and there was one in Moyak, North Carolina. So if you've heard of Blackwater, oh yeah, yes, that was their training facility, and then it became Academy. But they had a pistol shoot that was 360 in-house uh uh shoe houses, and there's 12 stages you could shoot 360 degrees in 12 different shoe houses. And uh I remember pulling into that was like the first time I pulled into like a like a like a proper facility since I left the military, right? Left massive duty. And I was thinking like, but our stuff wasn't this nice in the Marines. This is gorgeous. Uh and eventually the people running that match screwed it up, they took pictures of some operators, and then we were never, you know, the third year we went to go down there, we went and they just canceled it, you know. But uh but it's kind of that feeling like you pull out one of these and there's real security at the gate. There's you know, because they're protecting uh the clientele that's in there, but yeah, but you I mean that should be similar to KDM.
SPEAKER_01The point is you still remember the feeling the first time you drove in there, right? Oh yeah, yeah, seriously. And I the first time I went to KM for uh it was 2018 national of the Pro Series National Championships, maybe 2019. It was uh yeah, I forget which year it was, but I I remember like I remember the feeling I had, you know, like just rolling in there. I'm like, man, this place is unreal. Like and I I can't wait for the Rimfire crowd to, you know, for most of the Rim Fire crowd hasn't been there. Um, you're gonna love this. It's actually that's why I'm bringing my dad too.
SPEAKER_02Like my dad's 77, he'll be 78 probably by then. So he still shoots at the level he can, you know. Yep. And uh it'll be fun. Uh he's not gonna go and shoot, but he'll be getting out and enjoying the facility.
SPEAKER_01And and your dad is ex-military too, right?
SPEAKER_02Yep, yep.
SPEAKER_01Yep. He's gonna he will totally appreciate what Shannon Kay is has constructed there. Cause I mean, it it is. I mean, Shannon is military through and through, and it is um, it is proper.
SPEAKER_02So yeah, it's exciting.
SPEAKER_01It's exciting. So on on September 7th, uh, which is two days after the Midwest and Southeast finales, it's Monday, September 7th. Year seven communications.
SPEAKER_02That'll be the first invite, yeah. And it's gonna go to the way the rules are written, it's right in there. So it's 150 invites are gonna go out uh based on the um the national standings. So I'll divide the number. Let's say there's 900 people with three scores. Um, I'm not gonna divide by total members because if someone has one score, they're not really in that bucket. So I'll take the people with three qualified scores, I'll divide that, see how many total production there are, um air guns, and then I'll break that 150 invite down to that percentage. So it'll probably math out to like you know, 20 semi-auto, five air guns, 20 some production, and the rest will probably go to would go to open, whatever that split ends up being. Um and I'll do that. I'll do that here uh as these regionals start to wrap up. We'll see how many qualified folks we have. Um, and then we'll have five days. So we're probably we're gonna over-invite, I'll send more than 250 invites out. Um and then five days later, the next one rolls out. Five days later, the next one rolls out um until it's full. And you know, your invite won't work once the match is full. So if you wait um and it keeps opening up to someone else, it'll just it'll just go. That way we're not reminding you, hey, you need to go in and register. Um and then we'll have social media out too. So that way, if you're not checking your email, you can see that it's oh man, maybe I should look my inbox and see if I've got an invite. And it'll be the email it's associated with your PRS account, just so everyone's on the same page there.
SPEAKER_01Which should be the same as your impact scoring account too. Like your impact scoring login, your which is the same as your uh PRS login, all that. Like that's email it's going to check your spam. Like you're gonna wanna, yeah.
SPEAKER_02And and before we go more into invites, I do want to say that August 15th, KM is having like a dry run. They haven't ran a rim fire match in a while, I believe. So they're running a match August 15th. So what not this weekend, next weekend?
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Um, so hey, go out, experience the facility, um, get your pregaming on, get learn to call their wins, see where wind's flowing. Um, if you want to, you know, really prepare uh to to to to win your championship, then um they're running one. So yep. And that'll be uh that'll be your best opportunity if you want um to go out and kind of mentally prepare for what the facility's like, look at the props, all that kind of stuff. Have more of the raise to yourself than on the national championship day when there's you're sharing it with 200 and some plus two or something.
SPEAKER_01Hopefully 300 shooters. I would love to see 300 there. Hopefully we can get there. Yeah, yeah. Um uh registration for that takes place on the KM uh KM Precision Rifle Training dot com website. So if you go there, uh let's take a look here.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I I I really want to go, but I'm not able to.
SPEAKER_01So well, it's only 10 days out. Yeah, so you have um yeah, if you click at the top competitions and then on the right, the calendar, you have the precision rim fire challenge, August 15th. And you just yep, register there for that.
SPEAKER_02Well, yeah, yeah, and if you go out and shoot, give them feedback, right? Uh 100%. Let them know. So yeah, Kevin Rich. They want to make this the best that they can. They're very focused.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, very much so. Yeah. Kevin Rich is gonna be the match director setting up the course of fire. He's he's uh not historically um a rim fire shooter, he's more of a center fire shooter, but he's he's one of the head instructors there at KM. But he spent the summer kind of traveling around, getting some getting some matches in, seeing how other people do it. Like he he he's hopefully building a tough match. I he's knowing Kevin Rich as a shooter, um, yeah, he he that's the kind of match he enjoys shooting too. So uh, and it that's probably what he's gonna do. It'll it'll be a tough match. Um typically shooting at KM, at least on the center fire side of things, there isn't a lot of wind to contend with. Uh, so the targets are typically very small. Um, and there's a decent amount of movement because they you know they have perfect props. So I would I would expect the national championship to err on the side of small targets and a decent amount of movement. Um, but Kevin, Kevin's been competing in the southeast this summer. Uh, I know for a fact he shot at um he shot one of Levi Wilson's match, who's a who's an excellent match director. And he oh they hosted uh they hosted the NRL national championship this year.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Um I don't know if Kevin was there or not, but I I I have strong confidence in Kevin to put on a on a an excellent course of fire.
SPEAKER_02So I'm hoping it's tough. We've shot, I don't know. I feel like Rimfire is getting easier and easier. Like some of the matches they're I mean, it's funny.
SPEAKER_00Maybe you're getting better and better, Greg.
SPEAKER_02No. I wish that was the case. I mean, some people are getting better and better. That's for sure. I've seen a lot of really good shooters come up in the last three years. Um, I'm just pretty much the same. The uh Eric Leopold's put in so much work, Traffic Folder's putting a ton of work. Yeah. Um uh Klay Kennedy. Uh there's just so many guys that are just really grinding right now and really putting in the time. Uh, you know, Steve Mormadoo. There's just, you know, there's a carnal. But uh, but I don't know. I I've I've thought about getting in a center fire just because I know it's harder. I mean your target is small. You have to make you have to make more decisions.
SPEAKER_01So I'll I'll preface this with I I don't I don't know if it's harder, but it is certainly different, right?
SPEAKER_02And I here's here's where I'm at. I want to go up on a stage and I want to be nervous about the result because sometimes you get to the stage and you're like, this is gonna be easy. I just have to put it in the center or put it inside the edges and pull the trigger 10 times. What I love was I shot Magnolia Meltown. Yeah, Simmons is known for harder matches. Yep. I loved it. I didn't win, but I won based on how I felt I did. You know, get a third, but yeah, third against two really good shooters who are on fire. But I enjoyed, it's not the the result. I enjoyed every stage that I had to like think, okay, I gotta do this, this, this. You know what I mean? I mentally had to fight the whole time to do well. And to me, that's the fun part. You know, okay. I'd almost like to look at like a punisher series and have like 10 matches where hey, look, if the hit percent's over 90, this match is gonna count for the punisher series. Like you've got to be below 90 hit rate, 80 some percent hit rate, because otherwise you're just shooting. And what was great about that, he had some small targets and you're hitting them and you're like, oh, that's fine. Like when you're hitting these little in these little small targets that are intimidating, yeah. Um, because a lot of other matches are running eight tenths wide targets. Yeah. You're your self-images and used to see in those little things very carefully. You know, it was but it was a blast. I had so much fun at it.
SPEAKER_01I would I think I would put you in the minority of of most ring fire shooters, though, that feel that way, right?
SPEAKER_02I don't know. Um, well, you get guys that just leave and they go to center fire. So I think I think more like I don't know how into it Matt is now because just some of the matches aren't as challenging. So now he's shooting production for fun. Um Shane Ward's probably in that bucket. He wants a harder match, challenging match. So he's shooting Sarah Fire stuff. Um I mean, look at the spread in some of the wins. There, you drop two, you're probably not gonna win. Well, that comes down to you processing your process well and not making a mistake. It's not necessarily having great shooting skills, it's having great process skills. So and and reading barrage and reading wind every single shot. That's you know, you might not have to do that on a match like that. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So yeah. Well, I think that's where last year's national finale really stood out. And I and I remember asking you this right after the match, I'm like, how how how is Chris Simmons that good, right? And and I think the the answer you gave was like he just sees everything, right? Processes it, right? Like, and he can he can somehow, I mean, he he he can read the win, at least in Idaho last year, like he just read it so much better than everybody else, wouldn't you say?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, yeah, yeah. It's what it comes down to. I remember Texas the same thing.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02How the hell do we get that?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, right. So if you're if you're on glass, right, and it's a skyline target, and you're like, is he gonna pick up that the conditions just changed? Right? Yeah, you know, maybe he was holding left, now he's holding right, or needs to hold right, and then you see him center punch one, you're like, unreal.
SPEAKER_02Like if you don't get those matches that are tough, you don't develop as a shooter. Yeah, you don't get better, you know. So going to matches with big targets. It's fun because you get to hang out with your buddies, right? It's fun because you're in the community, but it's it's it's it's not the challenge that some of us are looking for. We're doing it to run our process and practice that portion. But mentally, you're not getting any stronger on making win decisions on the things that you need to then compete at a world level. And that's the thing that's tough sometimes, you know.
SPEAKER_01So do you think uh do you think matches in other countries, you know, speaking of worlds, do you think matches in other countries are, I mean, they have the opportunity to exercise that uh skill, right? Uh we all have that opportunity, right, to to put on, you know, go to a really, really tough match. And I think that's where the USA qualifiers and all that fall into. But do you think uh Rimfire shooters in other countries are exercising that skill? Like they're putting on the most difficult matches they can to develop their shooters to depends.
SPEAKER_02It would be hard for me to say. I've only had the experience in Great Britain. Uh, three of us went there last year to shoot one of their matches. Um it was tough, and they're good. And they're good, you know. So they've got five or six really good top-tier or more top-tier shooters that we had to shoot against. So we fared well, but it's not structure dependent, right? Um, sure. Like Ben Ben Wood and Tom Rice were putting that on, and they know what they're doing. You know, they put small targets up, and um they didn't want us coming in and shooting too well. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_03So yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_02But uh, and then I've heard that the checks are doing good. I think Michael McWent. Over there and shot with some of those guys. He says they're they're turning it on that competition's getting harder and harder over there. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01But I guess that's why we have the worlds, right? We'll see how it shakes out.
unknownRight?
SPEAKER_02Yeah. So I don't know. I don't know how successful. Like maybe people can chime in, but like how successful like a 10-match punisher series would be. Maybe there's a separate award at the uh at the at the national championship for that, for that whoever kind of partook in those matches and signed up for it. But I know it wouldn't be hard to get enough matches put together to make sure the hipper sets are right.
SPEAKER_01Anyone listening to this uh podcast, if you're a rimfire shooter and you're interested in something like this, just comment on uh on the YouTube below. You know, this will go out on Spotify, it'll be on YouTube, but um we'll you know respond to comments and stuff on YouTube. So if if you have any interest in doing something like uh Punisher series, like um yeah, comment below. Let's uh let's talk about it.
SPEAKER_02I mean the price points can stay the same. It's a one-day match, just like any of the PRS match. You know, we're not gonna you're not gonna get to that $200 price range. It could all be one-day matches, and maybe the targets are limited to nothing other good than six tents.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_02And then and then, you know, it's an easy way to keep the standards the same across all of them. But yeah, it'd be fun.
SPEAKER_01It would be, it would be.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_01All right, let's talk about this weekend. So we have uh Northwest and the Foothills that are hosting their uh championships. So looking into the Northwest, we have three shooters. Uh Eric Adelfeld, Judd Parson, and Armin Smojovic, I think. Uh sorry if I butchered your your name there, bud. Uh all but 300. Um Ryan Steese uh 298. Uh Ryan's actually uh did a podcast with him a couple weeks ago. He's uh uh rim fire shooter for IB IBI Precision Systems. Um they have that new uh deuce uh I don't want to I don't want to ruin this. Um or miss miss uh talk. We're just gonna we'll bring up IBI their actions. Deuce 2.0, that's what I was gonna say too. But yeah, the Deuce 2.0, which seems like a heck of a rim fire action. Um and a pretty good value too. If you're in the US and you're using United States dollars and you're buying Canadian actions, you get the discount.
SPEAKER_02Um yeah, we're like a date Canadian teammates on the masterpiece arm steel uh Steve Borsolino shooting one of theirs. I've heard good things from him.
SPEAKER_01So there you go. Go check them out. Um and their barrels. Uh the IBI barrels are uh awesome as well. So um basically, well, uh man, the whole top eight here are all within 295 or greater. So it'll be interesting to see how this one shakes out. And who, you know, if it's one of the 300 shooters that end up on top or somebody that doesn't have quite 300, and then what I mean, what's interesting about that is now you have a stacked field that get national invites, right? That you know, like the central region, it didn't we don't have a 400 there. Um right.
SPEAKER_02We didn't get a lot of 400s last year either. So these regional finales really shank it up. I love that you look at some of these regions. I mean, the Southeast is probably one of the toughest ones to shoot in. I mean, they got a ton of good shooters that are super elite. I mean, you got both Simmons and Jacob St. Amont in there, which are like one of two parts of the country right now. Um and then I love Eric shooting that region. He's shooting a Leopold shooting I think Great Lakes, but then Great Lakes has run in air. It's just you go to these not everyone's not everyone's gonna come away with a with that.
SPEAKER_00Leopold's great lakes.
SPEAKER_02He he shooting that region, he's up there training.
SPEAKER_01Um yeah, he he actually did a training session with uh yeah, I don't know, six or seven guys uh three weeks ago, but I put my son in there. That's great. It it is a good instructor. Well, yeah, and what I I wanted my son to hear all of this stuff from somebody else. You know what I mean? Um let's see where Eric is.
SPEAKER_02Um actually he's got a 300, I'm guaranteed that. But yeah, uh yeah, he'll be up and I believe I believe he's shooting great links. Uh because he'll be up there doing trainings and stuff like that. And that's the thing. If it we have a rule, it's if you want to switch regions 90 days before your original finale, you can. Um, but you can only shoot one of them for score. And if you try to you need to change regions after 90 days, you have to let me know and get approval. That way I'm making sure, okay, what are you doing up there? Uh it's great. Is this a region that doesn't have anyone you're trying to go? You know what I mean? I'm trying to snuff out any kind of weird stuff, but you know, a legit reason could be I have an elk hunt in Montana and I want to shoot the Northwest regional. That's fine, you know.
SPEAKER_00Good with that.
SPEAKER_02Balance life, you know.
SPEAKER_01Exactly. Uh, and to note the Great Lakes regional uh rim fire championship. Andy Cars, who's our normal match director here in West Bend, he wants to shoot it and not not feel like he's you know uh influenced course of fire or anything like that. So I'm I'm helping develop course of fire along with Chet Winkler, who's a rim fire and pro series, actually he's a pro series uh match winner too. Uh but the two of us are putting on the course of fire. And we yeah, so West Van Barton is in a huge range. Most of it all runs uh you shoot north. Uh, there is a part of the range that you can shoot, uh, I would say a little over 90 degrees where you could shoot to the northwest, to the northeast, you know, across that pan, and then there's a small part of the range where you shoot west. Uh, it's kind of divided in three areas. We're uh very likely we're gonna make people rotate through each one of those. So you'll go through those, you know, the north range to the the big pan and the west shooting range. You'll do that in the morning, and then you're gonna rotate through in the afternoon. So nobody's getting a draw on like, well, well, you got to shoot over there, you know, during during the first first light of the morning or whatever and had zero wind. It's like, nope, everybody's gonna shoot the same three areas, both in the morning and in the afternoon. It's gonna be a super fair course of fire. Um, but I'm I'm excited. I'm excited to help put this thing on. Unfortunately, I can't be there that weekend, so I'll be doing all the setup and then gotta leave. But uh Ron Varan, Eric Leopold. Um I mean, we have six three hundreds in the Great Lakes, Lily Nap in there too. Like it should be, it should be a good match. Um yeah, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I think fun to watch the the standings as they go too. Like this has been kind of fun. I watched great, I watched, I'm gonna be watching all of them because yeah, yeah, once the scores are submitted, uh, I'm approving the match. We're getting the standings updated. I'm doing that for every match. But the uh so it's fun watching the the central one. I'm like, who is this guy? Yeah, yeah, yeah. Because I don't know everyone's name, you know. Uh I've never heard of the guy that won that one. And uh like, man, usually in there.
SPEAKER_01So love it. So the the other matches this weekend, it looks like on 8-9 Sunday, uh, is the Foothills. We have uh, and this is Canada, Foothills of Canada, Darren Nagel, Gordon, uh Pitkow, I think. Uh both at 300. And then we have Tyler Jalbert, Andrew Wolf, Michael Rosenbaut. Um, you know, and these are all, you know, and Adam Glatt, these are all you know, competitive Canadian shooters. I'm sure you've competed against most of these guys at at world championships. Um, but yeah, hopefully a lot of these guys can make it down for the for the national finale, too. I think you know, probably the top 10 at least will make a strong push for it. Be awesome to have you guys down. Yeah. Yeah, a lot of center fire shooters in the foothills too. I think, you know, and this is this is a unique region because uh things are spread out. I mean, can like the foothills of Canada, this region is uh, I mean, if you want to talk square miles or kilometers or whatever, like it's the biggest region we have by a large margin. Um but these guys all looking for shooting opportunities, right? So they're shooting center fire pro series, which they have three or four matches up in that region, shooting all the center fire regional, and then you know, if there's a rim fire match, they're shooting it. So um hopefully these guys uh hopefully these guys make it down for the national finale and and and have a good match. But um I think we'll we'll probably record another one after uh this weekend and we'll see kind of where things shake out, we'll how the national uh rankings look. Um any I guess do you have any uh any suggestions, people following along this weekend, you know, watching an impact, you know, seeing how things, you know, if let's say I'm a shooter in the Atlantic Coast or Rocky Mountain South or something like that. That's the you know the the next series of regionals. Like if I'm if I'm at 300, like I should probably pay attention this weekend because these are the guys I'm gonna be squatted with, right?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, we'll be pre-squatted. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Yep, yeah. So it should be fun. Uh it's the beauty of impact. It is. Yeah, it is. I love having a live scoring so you can see how things, you know, how people are doing. So right, right. Awesome, awesome. Man, we're about at an hour here. I just want to make one more reminder. If you go to the rimfire page on precision rifle series.com, you're gonna see that uh win and answer at 1727 APR. Please go enter now. Uh, I think it's just uh well, I'll click on it. I think it's just name in the giveaway. Yep, first name, last name, email, and zip code. The zip code we just used so that we can see like, hey, what sort of um you know uh distribution we have across the United States so that we, you know, know like, hey, nobody in Washington State signed up. Why is that, you know? Um, but this helps us understand where where the uh um influence of of Rimfire is too. You know, if we have uh uh a bunch of entries from a whole bunch of G Stewarts all over the Pennsylvania region, then we we know what our influence is.
SPEAKER_02I did shoot an entrance as a kid, so yeah.
SPEAKER_00As a kid?
SPEAKER_02Yeah, I shopped and shoot small boards since I was probably 10.
SPEAKER_01So okay. That sounds pretty bougie. That's uh was it a Fortner action or was it uh standard bolt?
SPEAKER_02No, it was yeah, standard bolt single composition. Well the um, so I do have just I want to make an acknowledgement to one of our uh our one of our mass directors, regional director, Luke Cheeter. So he does this every year. Uh I think the third year he's done it. He does a benefit shoot where all the proceeds go towards um a student that's going to VMI. So I don't really raise last year, um, but this year he raised $24,000.
SPEAKER_01That's crazy. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_02And that's not all match fees. That's that's match fees, that's that's the range, letting them shoot and not you know pay additional money for the thing. That's that's donations coming in from people like Mission Barbecue and other places like that. So um him and Scott Bass, I believe he's probably I think of BMI grad, um organized that and uh awarded that awarded that chef to a student. So, you know, I think that's it's the only example I know that's doing that in the uh in both Sirefire, Rimfire, or shooting at all. Um, but he's really using that platform to want to get shooters involved. And then his matchbook, every page, because it's memorial match, is about a fallen DMI grad or you know, that that died war, page the ultimate sacrifice. So it's kind of neat. As you go through the matchbook, you can read about that person um through 21 stages.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, that's crazy. Uh you know, I I ran into Luke Jeter. Um, I think it's happened twice now, but uh last year, I think it was the last time I ran into him at Shot Show. And he's out there for that. I mean, he's paying personal money to be out there and represent that memorial match. Um, but but he is he is you know, he is talking to everybody. Very passionate, and it's awesome. I mean, it's a lot of work to be able to do something like that. And and I mean, even that that matchbook, uh, there's probably more work put into that matchbook than any other matchbook in the in the series, right? Um, but I mean he is he is talking to all the partners, everybody involved, um, you know, at SHOT Show and trying to get trying to get support for that.
SPEAKER_02So yes, uh thank you for yeah, just want to thank Luke for show making us part of that, you know, making the PRS part of that and helping us share that platform with him. So a lot of work went into it. Love it.
SPEAKER_01All right. Well, stay tuned. We're gonna we're gonna do this again next week. Uh Greg, like it or not.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_02Well, I expect it. The other thing, I expect to see you uh at the Minnesota match for the first PRS qualifier at 27 at Land of a Thousand Lakes. Okay, so qualifier. You're gonna go there, right? This is your official.
