All right, welcome to episode 26, PRS the Show. Jeff and I here this week. We're bringing uh Tucker uh Schmidt to come on, talk about the Wisconsin Barrel Maker 2.0.
SPEAKER_01Also talking with Derek and Kale. Stay tuned to hear who Kale wants to beat like a drum.
SPEAKER_06All right. Jeff Geary, thank you for joining me, bud. Um yeah, uh just talking a little bit about our plans and of course before we're hitting recording here. But um you had a good weekend?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I had a good weekend. Was nice went to KM Friday, shot a match Saturday. How far uh how far is that for you? It's right at four hours.
unknownOh yeah.
SPEAKER_01So that's not super convenient, but no, pretty nice to have four hours away. It it's definitely not terrible to have, but it was nice to get back there. Hadn't been there since gosh, probably since yeah, the collis match for sure. So it's been been at least a few months. Shot a I had just got a 25 dasher, as I was telling you the other day. The the Shelley special, basically. Wayne Shelley kind of taught me or didn't talk me into that. I basically picked his brain and sure kind of followed his loads. And it was weird the first time I shot it at 100 yards, the bullet went. I I saw the bullet go through the the paper at 100 yards. 100 yards. Never seen that before, ever.
SPEAKER_06So a 25 dasher is and you're shooting a 135?
SPEAKER_01I shoot 135, and I thought Lane's lobe was a little spicy, so I did back it down. So this was this bullet was going 2580, was not going that fast.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Yep. But I'd never seen that before, so it definitely kind of filled me with the it gave me the feels like, oh my gosh, this is a what what is this? Of course, spoiler, never seen another bullet since then.
SPEAKER_06I saw the first one and that's it.
SPEAKER_01At a hundred yards. No, it does have a good ending. It shot great. Just it basically printed those kind of 105 dasher type groups that everybody comes to love. It kind of did those and then went and tested it at you know, six, seven, eight, nine, a thousand. It tracks shooting really good, and the the extra speed or the less speed, I can definitely tell as I'm shooting, it's um I think it's missed. I'm like, dang it. And then it then I see it hit. So I could absolutely have a lot extra time, or not a lot, but you know, have a little extra time to have it settle and see it. So got to KM Friday and did tune up day with it, and it shot great. I had also taken the 120s because I've been tinkering with them in the dasher and in the dasher. And I've been and with the 200 freebore seven twist. You know, we were trying trying the things, just could not get it to to shoot great. No doubt. Yeah, was not shooting great there, so put it put it aside. Uh basically it was the 25 dasher and yeah, shot it, and I I had never seen so many impacts on plate during that practice and during the Saturday.
SPEAKER_06Could you see where on plate?
SPEAKER_01I mean certain not all of them. Okay, okay, but probably maybe even 20% of them. I I as I'm running a rack, I oh, there, yep, that's it. Adjust over and yeah, yeah, it's like, oh, I catch another one. Yes, is that's pretty cool. I see why the the elite that I talk with a lot of confidence. If that happened every time I pulled the trigger, I guess, yeah, yeah, you'd be making minor correct. If that happened, so so I'm looking forward to shooting it a little bit more. And funny enough, I did get the 120s now to shoot in the six-dasher. I just switched, I switched powders, and I don't know how about giving low date on a thing like this, but I I just switched to 4350. I'll just say that. And that all of a sudden, yeah. And then I seeded it a little. I tried, I think like 10, 20, 30. I went to 50 thou. I didn't go to 60,000 often. That once I went to 60,000, it just seemed to shoot pretty good.
SPEAKER_06See the sample deeper a little slower powder.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, sample size of that was that happened today. Because today I was literally going to that. This was the last day I was gonna fool we with these 120s in a dasher for the year. If it did, and of course, it's it just sucks me in because it shot great today. So now I almost was just like, please just shoot like crap, and then we're done. I was like, I'll have the 25 Dasher, that seems awesome. I got a six-dasher with 105s, that works awesome. And then, you know, six by 47 with 10 or with 120s. If we got like 40 mile an hour winds or something, but that would be that would be when to pull that out, I think.
SPEAKER_06I mean the 25 dasher is is is probably a really good KM round, right? Like you still get the high BC, you don't have to you don't have to push it fast, you can see it, you know.
SPEAKER_01I was surprised. I was under the mindset of if you did not take 105 or 109s in a dasher to KM, you're probably not winning the match.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01This I I could have cleaned, I of course the fire was easy, a lot of big targets. I think it was prep for gap drawing dams. Could have cleaned it easily. The one shot I dropped was bad fundamentals. Shooting the second smallest plate on the rack. I had bipod on the trunk of a car that was kind of narrow, and my bipod was a little wide. That four shot it it yanked, yanked y yanked it a little bit, did not, didn't see. So that was the one I did not see. So then now I'm going to the smallest one. Uh I gotta throw my 50-50 ball, and I was wrong on the guess. So that was the one shot I missed.
SPEAKER_02Yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Other than that, I yeah, saw a lot of lot of bullets downrange. It's definitely sucked me in a little bit right now. Sure, sure. Albeit that's probably not a high bar to suck me into something. I mean printing, yeah. Printing tiny groups at 100 yards though was was nice. It just seems like I hadn't done that. I was thinking I was just sucked at prone shooting or 100 yard group shooting. Oh man.
SPEAKER_06I you know, we were talking just a moment or two before you got on. So I it looks like there was 99 shooters there at uh at KM. That's that's outstanding. Lee Petros uh in there, Hunter Neo, Levi Wilson. I mean, this there was some solid uh competitors there that uh that you beat out there for New Caliber.
SPEAKER_01Well, for transparency, I was not planning to shoot the match. I had done the thing, like I didn't, you know, want to win another regional series match. You know, I if I if four I didn't even look to see who finished fourth place, but if that was a guy that had been like hustling all year for the series and for points, and and I took the trophy that he had been gunning for, just you know, didn't want and I counted, I was looked to get away. And it was a qualifier. I got I got 20, 26 of like regionals. I just don't need to go win a regional series match, mess up their points, do didn't want to do that, but uh you do not want run your own program at KM. So that was not when I told Kevin, hey, can you just take me out of the match? I'm gonna shoot at the end of the squad, so I'm not helping anybody. But uh no, he just said I'm gonna run a match. I need you to try to win the match. And Kevin Rich is uh on a short list of people that if he tells me to do something, I'm doing it without question. So if he told me go try to win the match, uh yes, sir, I will try to win the match. That's what happened.
SPEAKER_06So yeah. I uh I shot my first regional match of the year this weekend, too. Um coincidentally, it was at Highland Sportsman's Club where we used to host all of our matches. Um, and this is the first year that we've been back to uh the Highlands where we used to host the barrel maker and all that. Um so this is my first time back shooting there since actually uh last time we were there. I I think the very last time I was there, I was taking my con X box structure apart and hauling it off property.
SPEAKER_01So you shot at the location that y'all had the barrel maker. You said original barrel marriage.
SPEAKER_06The original, the original, yeah. Okay, and it's a it's a little bit neutered from where what we used to shoot. We used like the we used to shoot a three-quarter mile long firing line, and that's now it's probably half that. Uh maybe not even half. Um, you know, it's kind of in just like a real uh local spot that with I mean I guaranteed bullets aren't getting too far away, right? Or not leaving the property. And that that is kind of what what kicked us out of there last time is that we had uh we had a neighbor complain. I went over and looked at his he had a quantitative hut type garage or whatever, and he's like, Yep, my daughter, yeah, adult daughter that lived at home, I guess. It was like, heard a bullet hit the garage. Like, oh, oh no, you know problem, whatever. Like, you mind if I take a look? And so we go into this Kwanzett hut, and I turn around and look at the wall, and you could see there's a hole. I'm like, oh boy, like, do you mind if I borrow a ladder and I get up there and you know it's a galvanized steel structure, the hole's got rust on it, and it and and it clearly like you could see the direction of the bullet, and it looked like a 223 that came from the neighbor, you know? And I'm like, Well, that is a bullet hole, but it didn't come from any of any of us. I think it came from that house over there, and it's rusty, so it's been there a while. Um, well, later, I don't know, like a week later, he involved the county sheriff, and that was it. Um, at least for a little while, and now we're back there again. But it's uh again, we're in a different area of the property, it's a little more condensed, etc. Um, but it was fun to be back there, and I've never had an opportunity to just shoot there. I guess I was hosting matches, so that's funny. Yeah, I I was excited to be back. Um, I took a couple guys with me that uh, you know, friends that have dabbled with me a few times uh in PRS, you know, I have a bunch of demo rifles and stuff, so I set those guys up at that, and then you know, thinking ahead for barrel maker this weekend, impact foundation next weekend, I'm like, all right, well, I want to shoot a impact foundation, you know, rifle system and and and hopefully, hopefully get the bugs and kinks worked out or whatever. Um, but I didn't want to shoot a straight taper either, so I found the one barrel to action I had that's an impact. It's actually on man, it's an old impact action. I want to say the serial number's like 200 and something. Yeah, it dude, it it is it cycles awesome. It you know, it is war in. It feels good. Um when I went to the range with the guys to kind of just zero our rifles, like they're their rifles just hammered, you know, uh dime-sized groups at 100, and mine would be like two or three in a dime, and then a couple that would be about as far away as a quarter. And I'm like, yeah, and I kind of unexplainable. Like I'd you know, make good presses, you know, the rifles, the rifles settled in real nice, and it just sounded flyer. So I'm like, well, I'm probably not gonna miss anything this weekend because of that. And I did have a couple instances where you know I just didn't have any confidence in the rifle, and like I would I would take a shot, I'd miss, I'd see I'd see my miss at the dirt. I'm like, okay, um, three or four tenths right. I think that was a rifle. I and I would take the same trigger press or the same hold, and then the next one would hit, you know, and hit center point. Like, yeah, I this barrel shot after I I think I shot seven stages. And I got on Studaville's uh website, I'm like, man, he's got Bartline M24s in stock, spun up, so I ordered that Saturday, uh mid-match, and that'll be here tomorrow. So I'll be bringing it a brand new barrel tomorrow.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I've definitely never won a match that shot like that at the zero board that did the da-da, and then you know quarter inch another couple. No, right, never won a match after after doing that. So that's bad.
SPEAKER_06I have another rifle here that um it's only got maybe 400 rounds on it, and it it it from my best Pro Series match, which was the 2024 gap grind. Um, and I haven't shot it since. It's a gap production rifle, but it's uh um yeah, it's it it's prior to the impact actions on the gap PPRs, um, but it sh it absolutely hammers. It's just not something I want to shoot this weekend or whatever, but uh I've never been so confident in a rifle, you know. Like I know that taking something like that to KM, like yep, this is a quarter-inch gun, and it it's gonna hit all the targets that Shannon has out there, you know. And I just didn't feel that way this weekend with this rifle system. Uh I was really comfortable behind a rifle and don't feel like I took any sloppy shots, you know, uh positionally or anything like that. But um it just did not put bullets where I wanted them. You know?
SPEAKER_01So simple as that.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, exactly. Um so yeah, uh tomorrow screw on a new uh Studentville pre-fit and then uh hopefully send 100, 150 rounds um over the afternoon through the rifle, and then um Thursday, make some more, and then uh Thursday night I'll be up at the where the barrel maker is at Tucker's host in and Friday sighted and hang some banners with him. Should be good.
SPEAKER_00Okay.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. What are you doing this weekend? Anything PRS? Anything shooting? Nothing?
SPEAKER_01Nope, nope. I am off with off weekend. So off weekend. Yeah. Actually, tomorrow I'm gonna go re meet uh Randall Hand. He's kind of coming up from he lives down near Atlanta area, so we're gonna meet up at the range like about an hour away from me where I normally go to, and I'm gonna let him play with the 25 Dasher. He's got some some 120s that he swears are working good in his uh so we're yeah, we're just gonna go play a little bit tomorrow. Just okay do all that. So yeah, we'll practice.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_06What's your next match, Jeff?
SPEAKER_01I think federal is my end of August. So I've got maybe two more, two more weeks off potentially. Yeah. Then then I'll gradually start the the gauntlet once, you know, Little Rock and Worlds, then Gap Grind, and I was signed up for MPA. That's probably two percent chance of that happening. Like even if I needed a hundred, there's no way after three weeks, three of those weeks for me, I would even be capable of getting a hundred. So yeah, yeah, I'd be worn down. That's a rough ask.
SPEAKER_06Well, and you're qualified. I mean, you have three qualifiers a hundred, a ninety-nine point four eight five, and a ninety-nine point oh three one. So, I mean, you could you don't have to shoot qualifiers from here on out.
SPEAKER_01No, yeah, one win would be nice. I think that'd be two ninety-nine, three, four, and then that that's good enough. I I do want to focus on on worlds. I kind of worked really hard to try and make that after working really hard to try and miss it. It it was just uh weird, weird thing. But I was just kind of grinding the whole way and having to make compromises about missing this match and this match and our qualifier system. But you know, the the only thing was I finally knew I had just one match that it at gunline, which was usually my favorite place. If I could get a good score there, I could kind of sneak on somehow optically. I thought it'd be kind of embarrassing to win seven matches last year and then not make like the top six of the open team. That I just would have looked kind of like, what the hell? So I did yeah, really, really want to to do that. And it was, you know, just a tough kind of four-way battle between me, Catalic, Orgain, and and Tungit right there at the end. That it was just whoever did well at that match, and that's just kind of snuck on there, thankfully.
SPEAKER_06Snuck on there. I I mean um what uh what did do you know what rifle system caliber you're gonna shoot at the worlds?
SPEAKER_01Absolutely not. I know it's one of those three. It's one it's either gonna be the six- it'll probably be six-dasher 109s or the 25- with the 135s, and they are going, I'm right at 2680, 2690, so it's a solid speed. It's right there with 25 GT and a slow 2547 with a tamer recoil. It's a good, it's a good spot. I'm I'm impressed with it. But it's uh anyway, yeah. Yeah that 6x47 uh outside shot. That one I it's a little more snappy going 2920. I don't think I would shoot that as well if there was a lot of positional. So it would have to be something wild to make me shoot that.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01And also, what does the team need? Sure, if how's everybody else's health and availability? Do we need just a solid score, or do I, you know, need to go? You know, I'm fine to be a team player.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. That's a good way to live. I mean, it you kind of I don't know, you does everybody have to just go for it, you know, or is I I mean, everybody's personality, I assume everybody's just going for it anyway.
SPEAKER_01I don't think most people know any other way. I don't think I do either, but there it it would be a decision if there was some extenuating circumstances of yeah, yeah, this guy's got this going, yeah, just problems.
SPEAKER_02So true, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, one more thing I want to mention, and then we'll bring uh Cal on. Did you happen to see Precision Rifle Blog uh post today?
SPEAKER_01Yes, yeah, yeah. I spoke to Clay earlier, even. Yeah, it was uh because I knew Cal was doing this, don't know Cal personally, but he had told me he was doing this because he wanted win counts and make sure things were accurate and everything and transparency. I thought I was at 15. Actually, I don't think I'm very confident I'm at 15, not 16.
SPEAKER_02Okay.
SPEAKER_01Our last communication indicated that if he found something I'm not aware of, I you know, that's awesome. I can't believe I'd forget about a win, but I'd like to remember it. So that's that. But I definitely saw the list. If everything else is accurate, it's pretty cool.
SPEAKER_06We um we so I mean we provide a lot of data to to Cal. I think he he actually scraped a lot of this data off of uh website either through uh practice score or impact or our website, but um I love this type of stuff. We're gonna we're gonna uh pull together some of these same stats and make them live for the for like the Hall of Fame page. But cool um yeah, it should be really cool. So Jeff Geary, win rate 20%. Does it feel like that's kind of crazy to think like one out of every five matches you winner?
SPEAKER_01It's crazy to think about it for literally everything on there. I just look at it, it's like that's nuts. That's nuts. That's nuts.
SPEAKER_06It is.
SPEAKER_01Yep. Yeah, I I blamed, I I blamed Clay and them early on a while back. I was like, you guys started this by by winning so damn much early that you just forced other people to win more, and and and then it just yeah, it's gotten to where it's gotten now.
SPEAKER_06But oh yeah, that's crazy there. Over the past five years.
SPEAKER_01I did screenshot that one, especially because I think it's gonna drop to 15, but I just wanted, I didn't give a crap what list it was.
SPEAKER_02I just wanted to be right above Bushman and something, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Even momentarily, and somehow it'll be fifteen fifteen. He's gonna have the tie break edge. I just know it. Whatever the tiebreaker is, I guarantee I lose it. Yeah. Guaranteed. So I'll enjoy being number one momentarily. Yep. But that's
SPEAKER_06This one here, Nick Kadarzi, forty-two percent win rate of the matches he shot.
SPEAKER_01I it just must have been so depressing for people that just showed up to those matches during that rain.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Yeah. Ryan Beck, seven career PRS wins, and he didn't really start until August of 24. Two years in, he's got seven wins.
SPEAKER_01He doesn't get quite as much respect for a back-to-back top five overall in the series. Right. Last two years. Not many people can say they've done that. Nope. Nope. Actually, probably a lot of people now that you look at these types of lists, but still, it's it's not that many people.
SPEAKER_06Well, it's pretty cool stuff Kil Cal's doing here. And um, like I said, we're gonna take it, put it on the PRS website, and have um Yeah, how many have an all-fan page. Um and then uh yeah, we're going to um probably work alongside uh alongside Kyle on a few different things, but he's got a bunch of stuff coming out, and it should be a lot of fun to look at. Um let's uh so we're gonna shift gears a little bit. Kyle, welcome. What's going on? Hey Kale. Um man, see all right, we gotta we gotta talk shop here. It looks like you're reloading on a 750, a Dylan 750, and you obviously have an auto trickler going on in the background. I do. I recognize that that uh noise anywhere. Yeah. Um what are you loading for right now, bud?
SPEAKER_05Uh some critter stuff. Yeah. All right.
SPEAKER_01That looked like that almost looked like a string, I saw a piece of brass.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, it's uh I can't see you guys, by the way, too.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, really? What are we looking at?
SPEAKER_05It's a mystery case. Uh mystery case. Yeah, it's a wildcut, a two-piece case I'm playing around with. But uh nice. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I uh can we talk about uh some some some critter shooting here real quick? Uh because I I love I love having these conversations in person with you, so I think it'd probably make for a good conversation here. Sure. Um you you have the opportunity to do uh some deer calling and stuff, right? For for local farmers and whatnot down there? Uh yeah, yeah, we do.
SPEAKER_05Uh some of the adjacent counties they get um permits that are basically like agricultural protection permits and stuff for their crops, so uh we help them out with that a little bit. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Um, what is your caliber of choice for deer calling? And when do you do it? You do you shoot them at night too, don't you?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I just shoot them in the head. Um I've I've been through the rigmarole of wildcat calibers. I played with a bunch of fast 25s, 6 mils, 22s. Um by far, bar none, the best that I've found is a 308. 308. Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_06You're running yours a little differently, though, aren't you?
SPEAKER_05It's very different, yeah. So um yeah, I I played around with some different ones, but I shoot a 16-inch 308 and I shoot 110 B maxes about 3350.
SPEAKER_07That's crazy.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06That's crazy. Devastating, I'm assuming.
SPEAKER_05There's no replacement for displacement. So if you just want carnage and you want stuff to blow up at night, um, some of the small fast ones, even the light 25s, the Blitz Kings, when you get them going four grand, um they're cool, but they just don't have the same effect as some of the flat-based 308s. I've played with the 125s down to the 110s. The V-Maxes are a good compromise because they have a light varmit jacket, but they still have a jacket that can take enough centrifugal force to like get over like 350,000 RPM without us. You get you get over 350,000 RPM with most bullets and they start disintegrating. So these ones take it really well.
SPEAKER_06How far how far are you shooting most of these deer? I mean, you're doing it at night, uh, thermals or night vision?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, thermals. I run all thermals.
SPEAKER_06Thermals, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah. Like, what is this 1995? Uh I don't know, man. I yeah. No, it's eating me. Yeah, no, most uh if anybody is still using like a true night vision, most of the time it's some type of fusion hybrid. Um, even like really like high foam white phosphorus night visions just aren't nearly as good as thermals for the money. Like, yeah, for like a good top-end like IRA knockpicks, something like that, you know, if you're spending in the neighborhood of like six to ten grand for it for a thermal, like the equivalent of that in night vision would be like 30 or 40 grand if that makes sense. Oh, no joke. Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah. I don't know, I don't know why I don't know enough about the technology, but also too with the uh with the um night vision, it's a lot more um condition dependent because the night vision's enhancing ambient light that you already have. So if you hit over cost or you hit a really, really low loom light or something like that, you're gonna need some type of offset flood or something like that to kind of make it better. Uh whereas thermal thermal's thermal. Yeah, thermal thermal. Yeah, it's it's still affected by humidity and stuff like that. You get really, really bad humidity nights and stuff like that. You can cut it down, but we're shooting stuff a lot of times at like I don't know, feet. So it doesn't matter much. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06With with you said 3300 foot per second, uh 30 cal.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, feet. Yeah, I played some with some different ones, and with this one, um I was doing it kind of pretty irresponsible for a while. I was using like two-piece steel case head stuff, like real similar to this. Um and then I was loading it with like longer magnum pistol powders and cream of wheat just to keep the power call unpacked and stuff that you probably shouldn't do at all. Um, and I was getting them to go real, real fast. But this one I settled with, I basically just fill it with as much XBR8208 as you can humanly fit in a case and run with it. Sure, sure. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Oh, that's fascinating, man. I I love hearing those stories when we get a chance to you know connect in in person. Um so you made your way up to uh Missouri this last weekend and got to play at the gap match.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that was kind of a kind of a last minute deal. Um Lori Laurie had text me and basically was like, hey, I'll have a spot if you want. And I was actually elk hunting in Idaho and I didn't get back till Thursday. I was like, Holy cow, I shouldn't, but I can. So I booked a f I booked a flight Friday and flew up there for it. So um yeah, it turned out fine though.
SPEAKER_06It turned out fine. Another win. Um man.
SPEAKER_01We got here about the last. I remember looking with three stages to go, thinking, ah, Cal's got it, it's over. And then looked, was it your last stage, second to last stage? What happened? There's one you dropped six on or something.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, like I basically seriously yeah, I basically like zeroed it. Um it was completely my fault. Um so this match is I didn't start shooting PRS till it was fairly regimented, I would say. Like I hear like a lot of the kind of older crowd of people, the 30-6 shooters, talk about PRS like back in the day and how it was, and how it was a lot, how it was a lot more um kind of like odd rules, fast moving, different positions, kind of like rickety prop type stuff. People what people might call gimmicky now, but I mean I think it's fun. It kind of changes it up, it makes it not so vanilla. Um this match, this match has a lot of that. So I know a lot of the kind of structured shooter crowd, maybe if you want to call them that, weren't crazy about it, but this match had a bunch of OGs at it too. Yeah, and that's the I mean they intentionally make it that way, they're not shy about it at all. And I I think it's fun. I mean, it's not kind of breaks up the monotony of you know, some of these matches that you go and shoot now in the southeast and it's like 15 prone stages. It's like, dude, just not you know, yeah, this keeps it pretty interesting. So uh it has some can has a lot of complexity too, like hits a move on or hit or miss move on. And if you miss, you have to move. If you hit, you stay stationary. Um, and uh yeah, I screwed the pooch on that one's seven ways from Sunday.
SPEAKER_01I was about to say that doesn't sound like your strong suit, Gail. Complexly. No. No, no.
SPEAKER_05So no, it normally works out for me, but uh this time it did not. So I I made what shouldn't have been a dramatic match, very dramatic.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I mean, so looking at the scores here, and I'm presenting my screen here. So we um I mean drop two, drop two, one, bunch of cleans, a couple, drop two, and then yeah, stage 18, trailer deja vu, drop six. And this was this was your last stage? Uh I think it was my second to last. Second to last? Damn. Damn. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, which I mean go ahead.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna say scroll up to stage one then. Did you have to clean the last stage then? Okay, so you did clean the last stage. What? Did you know you needed to do that then at after the disaster, or or did uh you shoot before Ben, or do you even look at the scores?
SPEAKER_05Uh sometimes I look, sometimes I don't. I'm not really I I don't really have like a methodology behind it. Um the only thing I was concerned about was just knowing the skills time um for the stage. You know what I mean? The skill stage. Uh that was about it.
SPEAKER_06And you shot the PR skill stage in 4980. Uh Ben Graham.
SPEAKER_01Was the skill stage fairly stable or was it a hair wobbly also?
SPEAKER_05No, the skill stage was fine. The skill stage was like kind of one of those uh four by four steel square setup deals. I mean, it was it was rock solid. They only had a they only had a couple wobbly stages, but it wasn't like um it wasn't a mystery going into it if you knew it was wobbly or not. Like one of them you were shooting off an open car door, like it was the car door was completely wide open, and you had to shoot off the open window, the door jam crease in between the mirror, run around and do the same thing. So, like, you know, yeah, there's no uh well it was a five position stage. Oh shit. And you had you had to shoot in the uh in the creases of the door jams. So with the door open, you had to shoot through the window and then in the crease of the door jam. So you might get a tripod and one or two of those, but um you couldn't give in all of them for sure. Or you probably would have timed out. A lot of people timed out at this match. I know I was talking with uh Shane Ward, and he was saying you know he doesn't consider himself a slow shooter, and he said he timed out more times than he's ever remembered.
SPEAKER_06Oh my gosh. Okay, okay. Man, looking at uh your season scores here, uh you're having L of a year. So this is your fourth win. Um you have two second places, a third and a fourth.
SPEAKER_05Four and a half.
SPEAKER_06Four and a half wins. Oh, okay. So you tied four. Which one do you tie for?
SPEAKER_05Uh Collis with Jeff. Uh no, Jeff beat me outright on that one. He beat me by a point.
SPEAKER_01Um, I it was uh Rudisell.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, Rudisel at best. Best in Texas. Yeah, only there only there can I drop three at three points and still lose.
SPEAKER_01That's wild, yeah. So you went drop three and then so you dropped seven points in consecutive matches and got second in both of them. Yeah, and that's like the worst thing that's happened to you this year is getting second.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, that's super, super sick. Yeah, super sick. Thanks for that, Jeff. Thanks for that reminder.
SPEAKER_01Oh, you man, when you're doing this kind of stuff, you gotta have something bad along the way. That's just ridiculous. Yep. Yep, yeah, that's looking pretty strong for the end of season. What's this?
SPEAKER_06Um Sheldon that does all the oh yeah, yep, Sheldon, they lost all the stats and stuff.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's gonna be a top, a top one.
SPEAKER_05Although there's a lot of lot of people having great years, but that's yeah, I think it just has to do with like the oversaturation of matches, too, though. Like there's like 50 50 something matches, so it's like you know, like like manner's is a good example. Like, I'll be frank with you, I did not shoot that well. Um, yeah, I think if there was another good shooter there, he could have beat me for sure. But it's just a matter of you've got a couple matches in the same weekend, everyone can't be everywhere. You know what I mean? Like exactly. I was talking about this with a few people, and I was like, if you had you know, like a Jeff Gary trust fund budget and you planned it properly, you could like you could like cherry pick matches on like a Thursday night. This emperor do pretty well with that.
SPEAKER_06Well, all right, so uh that's a Morgan King who does that. Austin Bushman does that. Um Rusty Ulmer does it, not even Thursday night. He'll he'll cherry pick them a month out. I mean, he he had three wins last year, cherry pick, didn't he?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't think I've ever gone to a match like the weekend of more because I wasn't healthy enough to do it, not because I wouldn't do it though. So we'll we will be honest. I would 100% be doing that if I could.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I mean Bushman does it, you know.
SPEAKER_05So speak speaking of that, Jeff, I just need to know at the KM match, how much did you pay Shannon to make an entire prone Southeast match?
SPEAKER_01I know I knew people were gonna be thinking that. I was like, this match was like tailor-made for my injury. It was wild.
SPEAKER_05The most boring vanilla match there I had ever shot.
SPEAKER_06It was like the tallest match this year.
SPEAKER_05It was so bad. It was so bad. I think we had it was for I mean, when the wind doesn't blow and you're in the southeast, you gotta move around a little or something.
SPEAKER_06You can't just other stressors, yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, the only times we had to move, it just wasn't far. It was just move, just a quick position. That was about and that was a big target.
SPEAKER_05Or even the positional stages was like a single position and shoot a troop line. Yeah, like the Hornady match had triple or quadruple the amount of positional stages that KM had this year is kind of wild. So I figured that I figured that and you know, Jess Frankenstein body getting rehabilitated was not half the chance.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. No, I will admit that course of fire, yeah, had it not like gone down, obviously I won yada yada, but yeah, it was it was a little well tame.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, no, I'm you still dropping three is dropping three, though, still you still shocked.
SPEAKER_01No, I still, yeah, no, thanks.
SPEAKER_06So you got a couple matches you're signed up for here, uh looking ahead. Um August 15th, you're going down to Gravestone for a one-day match?
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, so what we did, um I was uh voted for the uh team captain for the USA team again this year, and I felt like something we missed the mark on last year was providing team members with an opportunity to collaborate and practice. Um especially some of the uh junior and lady shooters and maybe some of the other ones that don't have the amount of experience that some of the open or other divisions do. So I didn't want I didn't want to do something that gave us any type of unfair advantage. So I just coordinated it with their regional schedule. And what I did is I looked at all uh 26 or 28 members and kind of plotted them on a map and where they were geographically. And Texas gravestone, North Texas area was kind of the center of everybody. Um so it just it just seemed to work out well there. So um we did it coinciding with Jake's regional match coming up. So what we're actually gonna do is I I fly out early tomorrow morning for a work trip. I'm gonna be teaching in Arkansas actually, and then I'll drive over to Texas. But we're gonna meet up Friday, kind of shoot a scrimmage. Um uh Matt Caruso, Katalik, uh myself, Lee Petros, Dale Rhodes, a few of the other guys are gonna kind of come up with some stages that we think will exploit common issues we see, and then some of the local guys are gonna show things that they see indicative of gravestone itself, um, to kind of shoot, shoot a couple stage scrimmage and then give people the time to break down, work on things they want to do. And then what we'll probably do is break into groups with some of the uh junior shooters and stuff like that, and give them the opportunity to kind of pick our brain and give back to them a little bit. And then um we're gonna stay and actually I uh Jake was gracious enough to let us shoot Friday as well on his dime, which was great, and then Saturday we're gonna all squat together and shoot the one day there. Perfect. Yeah, yeah, this weekend.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's a good move. Um, yeah, that that it's gonna hopefully do well for, like you said, for the other divisions and and categories for the worlds.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, well, there's just a lot of people that have shot gravestone, whether it's the two days or they live local, shot one days. Um there's like a half dozen of us, myself included, that have never shot there.
SPEAKER_06So we were like Oh, you've never actually shot there.
SPEAKER_05No. Uh-uh. No, I've never been there.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Okay.
SPEAKER_00I didn't do that. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um, so then uh other matches so you're going to West West Coast Redemption? Um, I'm going there.
SPEAKER_05But not to Oregon. Yeah, I'm strictly going there just to beat Dan Bernicini like a drunk. That's it.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yeah. That's awesome.
SPEAKER_06I assume it's someone qualifier.
SPEAKER_05No, that's it. No, it's it's it doesn't matter if it was a yes, it doesn't matter if it was a one day. This is completely for bragging rights and ego, no other reason.
SPEAKER_01Okay. What did he say to spark this, or is this kind of just a private thing?
SPEAKER_05Man, that guy is in stature the size of a yard gnome, but has an ego the size of uh dude, like Andre the Giant. Like it's ridiculous, man. So uh yeah, Dan thinks that we're on par in ability level as shooters, so um, I'm going there to remind him that there's a pecking order. So I may eat my words really, really hard. Luckily, this isn't like a public forum podcast where everyone can click on it and see this.
SPEAKER_08So I think sometimes we gotta say it.
SPEAKER_05If I face plan, I'm sure this clip will end up on repeat somewhere. So, you know, we'll see.
SPEAKER_06I mean, we could provide Dan with the uh raw netted version here.
SPEAKER_05So oh I'm sure I'm sure if you could give I'm sure if you guys could give him a layup on me, you will do everything you can to help him out.
SPEAKER_06Oh man, I love it. I mean, when you're having an excellent year, so why not head head somewhere and steal some local points?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I'm I'm going far.
SPEAKER_06And a qualifier. You know, somebody's going to that match, like, oh, I need this, I need this, I need this. Cale showed up and beat me like a drum.
SPEAKER_05No, it's just just just just for Dan. It's for nobody else. I'm like every look at everyone else, like, hey guys, this has nothing to do with you.
SPEAKER_06This is just yeah, not personal. Not personal, yeah. Not personal.
SPEAKER_05No, I I I try, and so every single year, um, I've kind of broken the country down into four regions, at least what I consider the four regions. Um, southeast, northeast, central, and west, specifically, like Pacific Pacific Northwest. So um I shoot those four regions every single year, and I always have. Okay.
SPEAKER_06So every year, I mean, you're picking a different match in each region and going for it.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, every year I make sure. Yeah, because I think there's a lot of people that don't get outside the region ever, whether it's west coast, not going east coast, central, just staying central or whatever. So I kind of make it a point to uh get out of my comfort zone every year. I mean, believe it or not, the wind the wind doesn't blow much in Georgia, so we kind of have to uh kind of have to go to places and expose ourselves.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, dude, you're so right. Like I did that for my first few years just because I was good in the southeast and it was a points thing, and I just didn't make it out west that much. And then once I did, and you love it, and and now all of a sudden it's like God can't now I can't really go right now. That sucks. If I can go out there, get out there.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, oh yeah, like fun. I think there's a misconception, I'm sure you can identify with this, Jeff. They think a lot of Southeastern shooters are always like, oh, you know, they stay in the Southeast, they pick these matches. It's like these are the local matches to me. It'd be the same thing as living in Texas and not shooting anything in Oklahoma or Texas. Like, excuse me, like you're you're gonna shoot those matches because it's financially responsible. You know what I mean?
SPEAKER_02It's convenient, it's more convenient, yeah.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, and it's like at least for me, you know, working on a yearly budget with it, what it cost me like just to go kick Dan's ass is the same thing that it would cost me to shoot like like two or three matches here. You know what I mean? Like more like three, to be honest with you. So it's like um Yeah. I I try and pick a few of them worthwhile. Like I think uh I try and shoot Either quantity, Kansas, Nut Crusher, at least one of those every year. Um and then the kind of Pacific Northwest is kind of hit or mess, I feel like. Yeah. Um like I want to do the California match this year, but I know that didn't work out. Yeah.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um well so next year, and we're we're need to finish conversation on this with uh um Dane Lentz, uh, that puts on the West Coast Redemption in Bend, Oregon, but it's looking like next year that's where the finale's gonna be. So uh interesting. You've shot there this how many times you shot there last year. Have you shot there much else? Uh no, that's the one time. Okay.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, just that one time I went there.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, yeah. Yeah. Um yeah, I mean it we'll see what happens. Uh we got to finish talks, obviously, with Dane and and uh get the schedule out. But yeah, I mean that's right now when we're looking at you know uh qualified West Coast matches, you know, where it would be really good and we haven't had it, like it's looking like that's probably the location.
SPEAKER_01So um well you maybe upped the participation at that match.
SPEAKER_05Sorry, Gail. Right. No, no, I I was just saying, are suppressors legal in Oregon?
SPEAKER_06I believe they are in Oregon. Yeah, yeah. And that's the thing with like California, like your good buddy Dan Burdocchini could have an awesome location somewhere in California, but like acquaintance. Well, yeah, good buddy, right. Um suppressors and gas guns, you know, we we just can't do it, right? Like, even if it was like, hey, we you know the local sheriff says, you know, everything's cool, like we can't run a business in a professional sport that way. So understood. That makes sense. Yeah. Uh looks like they're 75 signed up for that uh Dane's match here.
SPEAKER_05Um I'm assuming when you're trying to pick finales, there's a lot of it that's feasibility and ease of travel, like having big airport hubs, a lot of accommodations and stuff like that for people to kind of make it too. I'm sure I'm sure that's kind of a large consideration, I'd imagine. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Part of it, you know, can we do a banquet? You know, what you know, all I it it's the entire weekend in the entire event, right? What's the what's the climate, you know? I think we kind of got away with one when we did it in Idaho in November. Um, no, who came up with that idea? Well, I yeah, Seth kept assuring me, he said, like, man, we're in like a microclimate here, like it's not gonna be terrible. And yeah, we had hail at at one point, you know. Um but it wasn't terribly cold, thankfully. But um, yeah, there's only I mean we we want to spread it east-west central, um, you know, spread it out, you know, every year, but like it's just it's just a challenge of where and when you can do it, you know. Um, but yeah, so I think it's gonna be in Oregon next year, and then um then we'll bring it back east, you know.
SPEAKER_05So I I I have a question with that. When you your rationale behind doing east-west central or whatever order it's in, um yeah, are you pick are you picking those regions or us? Yeah, right. Are you picking uh those regions just based off like people's ease of travel and stuff so that everyone kind of gets a fair shake traveling to ones that are closer? Is that kind of the rationale?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I mean you're giving everybody the opportunity is going to participate in a pro series that every third year it's in their third of the country, you know. Um, you know, if we if we did it where you know the major populations of pro series shooters were, and it would alternate between KM and Texas. You know, it'd be the southeast and Texas, like if it just go back and forth and you know, maybe touch Oklahoma once, but it's it's yeah, that's not really fair to you know the guys in the Pacific Northwest or California or whatever that you know wanna want to play the game, like, oh this is cool. We're just playing these guys, you know, we're gonna dabble in their sport, you know, once in a while. So I think it makes it fair. Um and it's something that you know we've been it's probably gone at rotation since 2015, 16, something like that. It's been doing it for for a lot of years.
SPEAKER_05Yeah. No, the reason I asked is I don't think it has nearly as much to do with region as it does individual match play, like individual match location. So like there's a lot of ones that are central that are square base. Yeah, for sure. You know, there's there's I don't I don't know if it's necessarily as much the region as it is that particular um match facility and the way they set up yeah, venue exactly.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Yeah, I mean like you man. What would be a good example? Like, you know, Hornady PRC is a incredible out west venue, you know, that's that would be unreal. Well, yeah, yeah, yeah. That would be a crazy, that would be a crazy finale. But then also out west you have Parma. Parma's mostly a square range, you know, Parma, Idaho. Like, um, you know, actually you could compare like Snake River in in uh Bliss, Idaho versus Parma, Idaho. Uh, they're only two hours apart in the same state, but they're drastically different matches, you know, way different venues. Yeah. Yeah. Man, um, well, we'll have to uh we'll have to we'll have to uh watch the Oregon match. Um that's gonna be after after worlds and all that, but that that'll be or no, it's not after worlds, is it? Uh when is that? Uh I don't know actually. It's a good question. I probably should know that, but it's September. It's the full it's before the worlds. Yeah.
SPEAKER_05Oh, good. Good.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Yep, that'll be fun. Um I mean, I'm gonna tune in just to watch you and Berticini. So that should be entertaining, man. I appreciate that. Of course. Uh yeah, and then after that, you're shooting Twisted Barrel. I'm assuming that's to get an eye on uh eye on where the finale's at.
SPEAKER_05Uh yeah, yeah. In the past, I've shot that match twice now. The first time I shot it, um, I was just not a fan of Course of Fire. Um I shot it this last time, and it wasn't a whole lot different, in my opinion. It just we were a little bit better on the draw. It was the most draw-dependent match I've ever shot. Um with lighting and mirage and stuff like that. And this last last time I shot it, I don't honestly think it was any different. I just think we had a favorable draw. Um so I just want to try and get a better look at that and figure it out because truthfully speaking, if it uh if you get the bad end of that draw, um, it can turn out real, real bad for you. Um Jeff, you've shot that match a couple times. What's your two cents on that?
SPEAKER_01I I was nodding along spot on the draw.
SPEAKER_05Oh, I'm I'm sorry, I couldn't see your screen. Yeah, it's okay.
SPEAKER_01I'm I'm glad you basically I completely agree that yeah, the draw we yeah, we had a tough draw once, good draw the other. So yeah, I guess at the finale, you kind of hope at least squads one, two, three are kind of right there, but uh it it could could matter. Could matter.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I hope they I hope some of that's mitigated prior to for sure, but we'll see.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, you got oh, sorry.
SPEAKER_06I was gonna say that's yeah, September, and then and then the very next weekend is uh world championship.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, I'm gonna drive to world, so it just kind of works out on the way. Um it was kind of a might as well type thing because the way the world works out starts on like a Tuesday-ish, anyways. So I almost have to drive through Arkansas regardless. So right.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and the and we've looked at this before. The the the amount of international crowd that's gonna be at the Twisted Barrel match. Um I mean, it's like world championship light, you know, it's full of international folks.
SPEAKER_05I was actually really surprised that when I signed I signed up for that match not too long ago, like in the in the last week or two. I think I signed up for it actually as I was leaving to go hunt, and um it had a lot of spots left. I was really surprised. I thought maybe I would have been behind the eight ball and trying to, you know, find a spot on social media somewhere or something, but it still had quite a few spots.
SPEAKER_06I'm really surprised people didn't try and jump on that and take advantage of that, to be honest with you. Not anymore. There's 200 signed up and says no spots left.
SPEAKER_05Oh, is it? Oh, okay. Well, yeah, when I when I looked, there was like 40. So people okay. I I think that maybe I think that maybe speaks to people's productivity level, you know, like when they sign up for things, you know?
SPEAKER_06Yep, yeah, it sure does.
SPEAKER_05Yeah, myself included.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_06All right, I got I got one more question, then we'll let you uh uh let you do your reloading here. Yes, sir. You have a you have a glove on your left hand but not your right. Yeah. Is that like a mice and men type thing? What's going on there?
SPEAKER_05Yeah, yeah, absolutely. No, I touch uh this is the hand that that's the hand I'm touching brass with. Okay. Yeah. So you have oils and stuff on your fingers, and it'll leave prints on your brass, and um, which isn't it's a superficial thing, you know what I mean? It doesn't matter performance-wise, to my knowledge, but I um I load us a lot of stuff like this, like critter killing stuff, and I can have that same, you know, couple hundred rounds for a long time, you know, like quite a while. And I've done it a bunch with um uh God, what's uh I have a 6XC that I shoot some uh like 67 grain blitz kings out of and stuff, and I load I load it like yeah, it's that's a fun one. I used I use that as a I used that as a daytime gun for a while. Um, and it worked real, real well because some of the uh I haven't done any of them really here in the southeast, but when I did play around with some of the uh coyote competitions and stuff like that, a lot of them go off weight, go off weight, so you really don't want to lose any weight. Um, so a real light jacket that'll go in and just detonate within the first inch or two and you know not have an exit hole side deal. So some of the real fast little flat base kind of type six mils work real well for that. But uh, anyways, I loaded like I loaded like 500 rounds of that like you know, three years ago, and I'm still shooting that because the only time I ever shoot is at critters. So stuff like that. It'll just kind of on the bullet itself and on the brass, any of the brass or copper, you'll get the thumbprints, and it'll start to kind of oxidize and stuff like that. So I just try and avoid it. That's all. Okay.
SPEAKER_06Interesting, interesting. Very cool, man. Well, I appreciate you coming on tonight. It's good to see you. Um, likewise. I'll see you. Yeah, thank you. I'll see you in person uh down there at the worlds, and uh look forward to seeing your lead team USA, man.
SPEAKER_05Oh, yeah. I'm looking forward to it. Appreciate y'all's time. See ya, Captain.
SPEAKER_06See you.
SPEAKER_05Have a good one.
SPEAKER_01That's hilarious. The he and Bardicini battle. Now I'm excited to watch that one.
SPEAKER_06Uh I yeah, now I am too. I love the little stories within the story here, you know, or uh, you know, something within a match like this. That'll be fun, you know.
SPEAKER_01Sure. I mean, part of the reason why the live scoring is so awesome for for years it was winning matches was just so different. I mean, sometimes you knew the score if some guy were speaking, it gets around the range, but other times you maybe didn't know, and then that anticipation, and so it just it had a completely different feel to it versus versus now with the live stuff, and then other people get to see that and you find out how matches you know the the story within the match, so to speak.
SPEAKER_06Exactly. I wonder if he's gonna squad with Burticini too. I could see him doing that.
SPEAKER_01Oh, I would imagine they need they have to now, right? Or at least be side by side.
SPEAKER_06Got to. Got to.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_06I and maybe he'll listen to this, you know, the rest of this podcast, maybe not. When um, and we're still recording here, but talking about you know leaving fingerprints. I'm like, oh, is he talking about like leaving brass behind and he doesn't want to make he wants to make sure he doesn't have his fingerprints on a breakfast?
SPEAKER_01No, I knew I I do the same thing, so yeah.
SPEAKER_06Okay.
SPEAKER_01I I I had a feeling that was it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. Do you think do you think um I mean on a brass, there's no performance difference, but on a bullet, do you think there could be a performance difference if you leave a little bit of oily residue on there and it oxides oxidizes differently or anything?
SPEAKER_01Man, that's outside my realm. I don't know. I don't I can't recall shooting any of those lately, although I mean I got a lot of stuff that's old that I'll shoot all the time. Yeah. Maybe I didn't touch the bullet with my hands or it didn't happen, didn't notice it.
SPEAKER_06It'd be interesting. That's one of those things it'd be interesting to ask more folks, you know, like do you wear gloves when you reload or not? You know, the are you careful about that type of thing? I feel like I need to be now, you know?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, like it's funny that what you thought about leaving finger for like that never even entered my mind. But if somebody was gonna do it, I guess it'd be KO, you know? Yep.
SPEAKER_06Do you let me ask you this do you wear safety glasses when you reload? No, I don't. I so I do when I'm um, it looks like Derek's joining us here soon, but um, I just muted him because it's it's got a black screen. But I so I wear safety glasses when I'm pushing primers in and when I'm seeding bolts. And really the the and and maybe maybe Ryan Hay listens to this, but uh Ryan Hay made a post where he had a primer seater, handheld primer seater, blow up in his hand, and he had a couple pictures of like his hand of like shrapnel, you know, like little pieces of crazy.
SPEAKER_01I remember seeing those pictures now that you bring it up. I that's yeah, I and I think I did. I did for years. I think part of the reason was a lot of my processes was in a garage. I shot a lot in the summer in a garage in the southeast in the summer. I uh it was drenched, fog, I you just couldn't see. So once I moved everything inside, I guess at that point I just forgot to go back to it. But yeah, long story short, I I try to be very, yeah, safety with everything safety first, but I do not wear the glasses.
SPEAKER_06Yep, I I I do, like I said, for um for seat and primers, and then for for seat and bullets, you know, and seat and bullets, I'm not really worried about it, but it's like man, if something were to if something were to happen, like that would I don't know. Like I just I see I I think of every and this is this is God's honest truth. I think of Ryan Hay every time I go to see primers and I'm like, Yep, put these on, here we go. You know? Never had an accident, never had an issue, but anything could happen, you know. Sure. And then you could be you could be done shooting, you know, because you lose well, or you could be, you know, have to switch to left eye dominant like our friend Bushman, you know.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I have enough weird things happen that I probably ought to put that on the list quickly.
SPEAKER_02Yep.
SPEAKER_01Especially after talking about it. The oh dude, yeah. The shooting gods are gonna know I heard this and will punish me. Um a lot of superstitions obviously go in sports greatly, and I don't hadn't heard many PRS podcasts talk about superstitions, but a lot of people have them, and that's something that I would uh now think about, and that would bother me. So there you go. I'm gonna have to wear them now for a bit.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Tucker, welcome to the show, bud.
SPEAKER_04Can you hear us? I can, I got you. Luckily, I uh perfect figured out some technical difficulties, dude. Our uh IT security is pretty legit when those strange links come through, but I did crack it. We got here, we're good.
SPEAKER_06Love it, man. Love it. Well, Derek Warren might join us too at some point. We'll uh we'll talk about him being the third to 300. Um he's if he uh if he if he will or not, but let's uh let's talk Barrel Maker this weekend, man. I'm excited. Uh this is the second, yeah. Personally, this is the second two-day match I've shot this year. I'm excited to do it. It's two hours away from the house, man. Um, how is how's set up? How is how is Barrel Maker 2.0 coming along?
SPEAKER_04Man, it's ready to rip. I mean, everything is uh pretty much set up and good. Uh, you know, we just got to do some logistics stuff like tents, banners, uh basic things, but the stages are out. I got the matchbooks kind of wrapped up today. It's it's been a I mean, it's been a cram session, right? We didn't have access until like 10 days before uh the event. And that's what I asked him for. Like the guy's been super awesome uh to work with. So obviously that presents some challenge. It's also uh two hours away from my house. Uh the range we were gonna host to that was about 10 minutes. So that was pretty sweet. And uh it was all set up, built, like purpose built, long-range facility, ready to go. I just had to go there, move targets, and and really that was about it. Instead, uh we had semi-trucks and trailers, and I'm still taking trailers up. I got one sitting out front right now. So it's been a lot, but I believe uh the stages look good to me. We'll see what everybody thinks, but uh we're gonna have good foods, good time. Uh Krieger, Krieger was nice enough to bring a couple kegs, and I think they're gonna serve or we're gonna serve. Uh should be, you know, a good a good time.
SPEAKER_06Heck yeah. I mean, it's starting to sound reminiscent of the old days from the the barrel makers that we had, where you know you try to keep people on site and having a good time and just hanging out because I mean I think that's what made it special for us is that we you know we just made it an event where everybody wanted to be a part of. Yeah, we also shot there, you know, and that's kind of the way it was, you know. Yeah, um, yeah. Well, all right, Derek Warren, thank you for joining us. Um, it's good to see you, man. Uh a little technical difficulty on your end too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, my camera wasn't activating for some reason. I had to restart my computer real quick. Had to sure, sure. So why?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, congrats on uh congrats on the third win, right? Third uh thank you. Yes. So you won twice. I mean, you you you're doing all this locally, you got twice in Indiana, you own that range now, you can say that I think safely. And uh the uh third one happened this weekend at MKM. You've always shot well there too. That's pretty local to you as well, right?
SPEAKER_03Yep, yeah, that's my closest two-day anymore. Sure. Uh yeah, that's three and a half hours for me. Um, and I've never won a one day there, so I've never won at that facility ever. So that was kind of cool to get a breakthrough at that range. There you go. You've been close though, right? Oh, yeah, I've gotten multiple second places at two days and one days there, but never gotten a first uh sure. Most of the time around, Beck always beats me at the one days. Yep.
SPEAKER_06Uh and this time Beck not I mean, Beck was out of the top ten. He finished 15th, but um, man, you were the only one in single digits rock nine. Um, Jeff, were you watching throughout the day on this one too?
SPEAKER_01I I was watching a bit. I know Keith Baker was up there. He was in first, as I recall, after day one, and looked like he kind of faltered day two, and back he kind of faltered a little bit. So I was kind of watching the battle between it looked like Derek and and that Zach and Zach Yeager down to the end. So yeah, Derek, I'm sure, can kind of talk about it better than me watching it. What uh what stage did you finish on, Derek?
SPEAKER_03So I finished on uh be eight. Yes, eight.
SPEAKER_06And all these are out of order too, because one, two, three, eight, two, three, three.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, I don't know why they're they're out of order all weekend.
SPEAKER_01Uh so don't that's such an MKM uh Steiner type match to just put a goofy order. I'm just gonna put the matchbook in a goofy.
SPEAKER_04To be fair for Bill is coming to Wisconsin. I made sure I've never never ran a full match via impact scoring. I was like, look, dude, if you have the heart, if you can, I'd love to have you. And luckily he was uh nice enough to oblige. So uh a little fail-safe there. So uh I'll blame Bill if there is a problem.
SPEAKER_06100%, Bill. Um yeah, Bill is Bill is awesome. I'm excited to see Bill there this weekend, too.
SPEAKER_04Dang.
SPEAKER_06Um yeah. Uh so you finished uh Derek, you finished on stage eight. Uh clean that one. Um man, it's hard to even see on here. Like, did did you go like six, seven, eight were your last three?
SPEAKER_03Uh yeah. So funny enough, this weekend uh was the exact same as the previous weekend, where if you look at number nine, I dropped three uh You did. That was your worst stage. My worst stage was my very first stage again.
SPEAKER_01Right out the gate. Again.
SPEAKER_06Right out of the gate.
SPEAKER_03Two times in a row. I so what happened here? What happened here at stage nine then? What why did you drop the? That was the hardest stage of the weekend, no question. Okay. Uh that was you pro there was probably about out of the five targets, there was probably three of them were one MOA circles, uh, anywhere from four fifty to six fifty. And um it was only two positions, but it was a lot of panning, never shot the same distance. Like it was, and it was that one started off the weekend. I was like, three down, that's not good. And Dave Preston was like, nah. Dave Preston got dropped three on it also, and and we were all like, hopefully, that's not a trend, and and it ended up being, I think, uh, I think there was only like three cleans on it.
SPEAKER_06Two or two Jeff Barton and Zach Yeager were the two that cleaned it. Uh okay.
SPEAKER_03And I knew Zach was gonna have a day. Once once he uh cleaned that one, I'm like, ooh, okay. Zach's gonna have a day.
SPEAKER_01Was he in the squad in front of you or uh behind one behind? He was one behind, okay. Do you know Zach well?
SPEAKER_03Yes, dude. Zach is an awesome guy. Like, I've been rooting for him to just get over that last little hump and he could totally win a bunch in two days. Well no, okay, I will after I got a now that I got 300. There you go. Like against everybody but me. But but no, like yeah, he got uh back-to-back podiums there. There you go. And I don't think he like I don't think he does like really big travels, but mostly northeast it looks like, yeah. Yes, yeah, but he is a very strong competitor. No, like I I've been saying for a long time now that if he were to if he were to show up to a two-day and win, it wouldn't surprise me. He'd just have a really good weekend.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, nobody picked him last weekend, at least on the show. Uh, and we're gonna do the picks for the barrel maker here in a few minutes. Um I'm looking forward to that as I am a pro shooting this, and I have zero expectations of any one of you guys picking me or myself. I'm picking you, Ken. Mark it down. I take Ken Baylor. No, Tucker. Uh uh back to Zach Yeager. Look at his regional uh regional performance this year. He had uh a 16th at MKM, an eighth at war, and then all the rest are first, second, and fourth.
SPEAKER_03Like he just yeah, I mean he's doing like I'll say shooting a war one day is like nothing else in the country. Sure, yeah. War rifles is something else, right? Yeah. Yeah. I mean he it is so yeah, when he's 66 doing good at war one day, that means he can shoot. He can shoot. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Well, I guess Ryan Beck was he beat Ryan Beck by one there.
SPEAKER_03Um you look at 15 down for a one day.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So yeah, that's a lot these days.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. Yeah. And Andrew Mac. And also funny, another fun fact, uh, Zach left-handed. I don't know what like it's like if why the left-handed guys are so good. Yeah, nothing. Exactly.
SPEAKER_01I know. Uh well, yeah. He had a chance to win the match if he had cleaned his last stage, but I didn't know how difficult Derek told me later that was one of the tougher stages of the match.
SPEAKER_03Yes, he had to clean his last stage because he dropped one on the tiebreaker. Okay. So when I cleaned my last stage, I knew he could do it. I mean, he the way he'd shot all weekend, he could totally do it. But he was finishing on seven. Seven. Yeah, he dropped two there. There was oh, there was only about two shots in that stage that I'd say was missable. And he missed them most. And it was they were tiny. They were very tiny targets. It was, I'd say probably about a three and a half or four inch circle at if I remember right, five hundred yards. Like it was a tiny KYL rack. Sure. And it was just a mod prone stage, but I was I knew that them two shots was gonna be tough ones.
SPEAKER_06So that was stage seven. Um let's let's go back and take a look. Uh see how you shot stage seven. God, I wish this was in order. You cleaned it. So yeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. I think I cleaned my last four in a row. Okay. Uh four. Yeah. And I only dropped two rounds day two. So I yeah, I only dropped two rounds day two. And funny enough, one of those was on stage six. Was that no jungle gym? The other one, a few back little poles. Um yes. Um or was that I don't know what that ball be in and out or or number two. Number two, uh, yes. So that was a six-tenth wide square of like five hundred yards, and I missed that. I was like, uh, I couldn't bring myself to do a full correction on that shot. I'm like, uh, what was that? And no deal. I was so mad about that.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, congrats on the dang win. For sure. It's like, what uh what's what have you done? Like you go many years, and and there's an obvious difference just that I notice about you. What what did you make an active change or what have you done that now all of a sudden you're doing what you're doing?
SPEAKER_03I'd say, I mean, it sounds cliche, but mental game was everything. Okay. Like just getting over that last little hump of the mental barrier. Like, I've had accurate rifles for years. Like, I've had a system for testing accuracy. I've had like I've shot I shoot belly matches on like KYL style matches. But I'd go to these, I I'd go to the matches and I just would be so terrified, like, oh man, Austin Bushman's here. It's like that I can't win. You know, it's like Jeff Gary's here. It's like I just have myself convinced that that they were just on a whole nother planet than me. And my dad's told me forever, it's like you can shoot with them. Doesn't matter. It's like you can shoot with them. Just go and compete. And like this year, I just kinda told myself at the beginning of the year that you have to block that out. Like, I've tried, and also like Keith Baker kind of talked it over to me. He's like, with these new live scores, he's like, you gotta decide to like use that to your advantage. Like you have to think of a way to either like if you don't want to know, don't look and tell everybody in your squad, don't tell me. Like, I don't want to know, I don't care, just like shoot your thing. Or like look and be like, hey, I'm in front of you know, Jeff. Like, holy like, oh, I'm like, you know, to give yourself a boost, like, or like if you do look and like don't look at oh, I dropped that round and focus on that round. Like, look and be like, whoa, everybody else is bleeding shots too. So I'm not out of it. Like, yeah, I mean, it's and no. So, like, and after I got that first win, it really was like on the drive home, was like, huh, did I just do that? Like, I guess I did. Like, and then after that, it was just kind of clicked that there's no re like, and I'm not gonna say I I shouldn't say that that there's no reason to be scared. Like, I was telling Jeff there just the other day how going to this match, I wasn't confident still. Like, I was still telling myself Ryan Beck's just impossible to beat at this range. I'm like and I thought he was crazy.
SPEAKER_01I was like, how the hell are you not confident?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, I I think the rest of the world saw it that way. Like, I mean, this is this is Derek's opportunity to get 300, you know?
SPEAKER_03Yeah, and and that's what after, and like then Jeff sent me a screenshot of uh all his picks on that one website, and uh and uh he had me up there, and that was after the match was done, that even more so opened my eyes of like, man, maybe guys do believe in me. Like, maybe there is like it's like not just like in my own head anymore that so and you don't know I you probably don't listen to this podcast then?
SPEAKER_06You didn't listen last week?
SPEAKER_03Oh no, I did. I I think I think you were the first overall pick, weren't you? Yeah, uh Beamer there picked me straight off the rip. That's what I thought. And but at the same time, I'm also like I'm sitting there like, you're an idiot, Ryan Beck, Ryan Beck, like I mean, don't pick me. It's like, duh, why would you pick me? And so no, that's just like I was sitting there like, and I was thinking Keith Baker's on a heater, he's got his gun hammering, and like just how good Beck is. And then I also knew like there is uh well, for example, Zach Yeager. Like I know there are so many one day guys, Zach Yeager, Tyler Reynolds, uh Eric Kuchin in the Northeast, like, oh dude, there's so many one day guys at the Northeast that can just they could show up and if they just clicked for two days, they would they would easily win. And but they know they haven't and I gotta I gotta ask, how how do you feel about going into the finale now?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Twisted Barrel.
SPEAKER_03It it does feel different than years prior, I'll say that. Like, like I'll give an example of that. Like uh the moment my last stage was done, I turned around and everybody was cheering, and yeah, and like as soon as the like mod was finished, Dave Preston, and when this is coming from Preston, it's like okay, you're gonna listen. He's like, He doesn't speak how many, yeah, yeah, exactly. It's like, how many of that laudabullet do you have left? How much barrel life's on that gun? He was like, And how much value that yep, he's like, that is like you're taking that to the finale, you know. And then I start going into like, well, I I was gonna play with you know 647 with 120s. He's like, Oh my god, he's like he's like, if you don't take that setup, you're crazy.
SPEAKER_04You should definitely do a caliber switch for sure.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And so yeah, that was like, but when that right there even was a confidence boost, that pre like I could even see it in Preston's mind that it was clicking, like, huh? He's like, huh, wow.
SPEAKER_06Like he was like, and I think but I think with the finale at Twisted Barrel, um, and looking looking at, I mean, so the top three right now. Uh Kale, Kale will be the first shooters, the first of 300, and then it was Bushman. Now it's you. So you're sitting in a third, third position, you know. Uh Jeff probably will be in fourth no matter what. I could see Jeff having 300 while you get there. Maybe it maybe we might even have a fifth. Uh could be well, it could be any uh a bunch of these guys on this.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, there's there's definitely a couple could jump out.
SPEAKER_06Right. But at this point you're gonna you're you're following Kale and Bushman. And I think if we look at uh shooters and this type of course of fire, this type of venue, and like who does it uh who does it favor? I'm gonna say probably Derek Warren and Jeff Geary are probably the two two most favored shooters at locations like this, right? Where you can just be perfect, right? And I uh yeah, well, I guess Bushman's perfect too, but um I man, I I think you need to start looking at yourself different in the mirror and being like, I have what it takes to win a golden bullet this year, and uh not just have what it takes, but you you're probably favored given that it's at twisted barrel and it's a I mean you've won three what I mean Indiana is is real similar to to Twisted Barrel. It's a flat square range, you know? You shoot well at K and M, that's a square range. You should you should MKM is squarish, you know? Like this this I think favors you. Hopefully you see that, no?
SPEAKER_03We I do, and like Jeff and I, we've been so I'll say we've talked this year more than we ever have. Like we've communicated in years past, but like even Jeff and I were like thought you were a prick.
SPEAKER_08Yeah, I know. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00That's what I meant by it's like, dang, this dude's changed. All right. Okay. I'll talk to him.
SPEAKER_03But uh so yeah. Sorry, I didn't mean to say that online. But we were just like uh we've talked about how uh like this is definitely an us finale in the sense of like the the square flat range, then there's pan they can pan at that place, like it definitely has uh wide enough to pan. Yeah, but it's not a box canyon Idaho cameo vibe.
SPEAKER_06Like no, no, no, you know, it's a big country west coast match, no, exactly.
SPEAKER_03No, so and I don't see there being a lot of bipod, and if there is bipod, it's probably what I would call dynamic bipod when you're using it off props off of in creative ways, not just lay prone, you know, bipod. Sure. And so and that's where yeah, and like those matches, I'll definitely say I feel like yeah, I've gotten to the point where I love small targets, and I like that is my forte, and and I put a major emphasis on accuracy of a rifle. Like that is a big deal to me, is how accurate the rifle is.
SPEAKER_06And I think that's what it's gonna take. That's what it's gonna take this year at the finale, man.
SPEAKER_03Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_03Yeah. And and it just no, and that's what I I got one that this one this past weekend. I'm gonna pull it right now, and it's got about 1100 rounds on it, and then I got another one I was saving from earlier in this year, and but no, and yeah, so I I mean I feel confident like and like so you're signed up for the the twisted barrel match uh mid-September there, uh right before Worlds.
SPEAKER_06Um there's a lot of heavy hitters signed up for that. Um do you feel like do you feel like going into that match that this is your tryout for the finale? Um you know, if you're gonna be shooting against some other heavy hitters there, like Yeah.
SPEAKER_03I mean, in a lot of ways, that's what I forced myself to I mean, war that same weekend's only five hours from my place, and that's pushing, I think, 13. So I was like, I yeah, I have to go to get another uh just another trial run. I mean, I've only been there one time ever. Sure. So and if you learn any one thing that helps you for you know, for the next uh for the finale for any match that you go there, you know, if you can learn that one prop you need to do this on, that can save you at the finale. That can save you that two points or one point, because that's what matters now is one point. Yep.
SPEAKER_06Like and but I mean just how many So confidence wise, if you if let's say you don't do well there, or you have a rifle issue or something like that, um are you gonna be able to put that behind you for the finale?
SPEAKER_03I would hope so. I feel like that's a big enough span between September and the actual finale and then six weeks, yeah. Yeah. And my mindset also is uh my current idea is to oh break out one of the two barrels for MPA to give myself a confidence booster in said components for that match. Like I mean, in just for the or I say that for the uh finale, you know, just to get it ready, because I think that's only three or two weeks apart or something like that.
SPEAKER_06Uh yeah, yeah, MPA to the finale, yeah. It's like three weeks. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Three weeks, so yeah. But so yeah, and I mean, but yeah, that's my current mindset, and like and I and I've gotten that's one thing I will say where confidence has I have uh I've really like refined a system at my personal range that I can shoot out six hundred yards on my like back uh farm, and I've gotten a system figured out to where it's like I do it the same way every time, right before I leave. And it'll if it per if the gun performs the way it should, then it gives me a confidence boost. Got it. Like Sunday.
SPEAKER_02There you go.
SPEAKER_06There you go. Awesome. Um, you want to stick around, talk Wisconsin Barrel Maker, and make some picks? Oh yeah. Yeah, that's oh yeah.
SPEAKER_03I've wanted to I've actually wanted to do some of the picks for thought about that.
SPEAKER_06You just have to say so, man. Um all right, well, let's switch gears. Um all right, Tucker. Let's talk about Barrel Maker. Okay. What uh what uh so this it describe the property so that we can all kind of envision what this is, and then we'll talk about props and targets and course-fired stuff.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so it's uh it's a working cranberry farm. So it's uh I think 650-ish acre. So it's it's pretty open. The the trick about cranberry farms is they're full of cranberries. Um, but but but the nice thing is uh they do have kind of gridded out built-in berms all over, and it's super wide. I would say, you know, it's a 90-degree firing line, and it's I don't know, maybe 500 yards one way and 200 yards the other. Um and and we I feel like we got a pretty versatile uh course of fire up there. I mean, I'd I'd like to shoot it for sure. And uh the guy's been super dope to take us in last minute, and uh with all the the range uh struggles early on, I think this is the third one. Um so yeah, it's it's been an uphill battle, man, but I feel like we've we've done good. It's uh the firing line's up high on a dike, so it's kind of overlooking a lot of that. Uh and yeah, and so man, I'm I'm excited to have folks out.
SPEAKER_06So the um you kind of describe it as like uh kind of like a you know a dike or whatever. It's a it's a raised, raised area, and it's actually it's not too different. Uh I mean I've I haven't seen where this this match is taking place. I've seen cranberry farms before, but uh in Wisconsin, I think is like the number one can't cranberry producer in the US, I think.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Um but the the dike that we're gonna be shooting off of, if it's a cranberry dike, is actually similar to what Twisted Barrel is, right? Like um you got to get raised up uh what eight, ten feet off the ground. And then um, yeah, and then you know you're away from the mirage and that type of thing, too. But um so cranberry harvesting though, like you have a dike on all four sides, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, so down in the like on the lower end. So there's a big dike with like a retaining pond behind it, and there's like a big parking lot where everybody's gonna park, lap, you know, trailers, tents, and food and all that. And then down in the lower section is is all the fields. Uh and it actually looks pretty cool, man. I took some like drone footage of it. I mean, it's just it looks really cool. I mean, I've never shot at a cranberry farm before, so it's it's kind of a unique, unique deal. It's it's pretty wide open, and uh I'm hoping we get some Wisconsin wind up there. I know August is a little more tame than than usual, but uh you know, it was blowing 12 to 15 when I was out there the other day. Uh so let's hope, let's hope we get a little breeze to make it make it a little tough. But I got some, you know, some I like to keep things, you know, Clay preaches, right? Like I try to keep a pretty linear, like fair stages across the board. Like I typically don't want to have like one really hard stage or you know, per side. Try to make them all like you know, a generous target, medium, and then a couple hards on on every stage, just so nobody gets stuck on a on a bad draw. So that was kind of the at least uh the idea going going to design the stages.
SPEAKER_06Yep. It's funny that we all associate that with clay and and and I do as well. You know, but um that's the most fair way to do it, right? Where you don't have you don't have anybody that just ends up with a draw for one reason or another, whether it be the distance or size of targets or mirage or whatever it is, right?
SPEAKER_04Right.
SPEAKER_06Um all the props you had to to move out on location.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, luckily I have a couple buddies that own a, I guess, a pretty sizable landscaping company. And uh they had access to a big, you know, step-down semi-truck. Uh, so we took, I don't know, 70,000 pounds on that thing full of concrete and props. And there was a track hoe on there, a big cat. Not a big one, but I don't know what the size is. But you know, a track hoe or excavator, and uh, we're gonna shoot off of that and some skid steers and uh, you know, make it a make it a Midwest farm ass, you know?
SPEAKER_06Yeah, exactly. Exactly. Man, um, so we have let's take a look at how many registered we're at 128. Um, and looking at some of the names that are on here too, it's like, well, this is this is a Tucker match, right? Like these a lot of the guys that that uh are on here have traveled from across the country, all guys that you've you've shot with, and you know, and and now Tucker's finally putting a match on everybody's returning the favor, right?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, yeah, you know, I you know, obviously I work at Vortex and do a lot of the sponsor stuff. And uh I didn't mean you were joking the other day in the middle of a hailstorm. Like, you know, I've been putting putting deposits into this game for a long time for you know prize table stuff and and all the things. It's like, man, I finally need to withdraw. Like, here's the email. Sorry about this, guys, but uh yeah, another another match sponsorship request heading your way. Um, but folks were cool, man. We got a pretty stacked prize table, and I was pretty pumped to see some guys coming in, uh, you know, have some talent uh come to the match, so should be good. Yep.
SPEAKER_06I I think it will. I um so I am signed up for this, uh, like I had mentioned. I I literally uh where was I here? I'm in squad nine, and I joined squad nine because I saw Keith Rudis was in there, and I root for Keith all the time.
SPEAKER_04He bailed and he bailed. I know he's in bail for that. He's a vortex guy, dude. He's in trouble. I haven't told him yet, so I hope he's watching.
SPEAKER_06I I'm gonna I'm gonna send him this part. Perfect. You know, I I literally joined that because I'm like, you know, because uh you know, and I'm I'm in there with some some friends and stuff of mine too. I'm I'm still excited to shoot that that squad. But it was like, I I I wanted to shoot against Keith, you know? Yeah, and I wanted to watch him shoot the skill stage too. But he's fast.
SPEAKER_01Pretty good sized squads, 13. Yeah, seriously, yeah.
SPEAKER_04You know, we went back and forth on how to do it. I I wasn't sure how you know it's a first-year match. I mean, obviously, Ken ran this for a long time, uh, but it's been what, three or four years.
SPEAKER_01Well, you got a lot of people.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, it worked out good, but you know, we were contemplating running like 18 at once, um, and then it kind of trickled down. I was like, Yeah, that's probably not gonna happen. We'll just run nine and run nine both days and kind of do the squads. And one thing I don't typically like personally, and and others may feel differently, is like when you get like eight people in a squad and you have to spot, and then you're always kind of rushing when you're cleaning your stuff.
SPEAKER_01You are moving.
SPEAKER_04I hate I hate that personally. I know other people probably feel different, but like I'm like, oh my god, you're rushing the whole time. Uh so to me, like 10 to 12 is probably perfect, but I also wanted to get people in uh so it ended up being 13. So we're hoping it cruises.
SPEAKER_06I like 13 because then if I mean, which you should be glassing whenever you're not actively getting ready, right? Like you should be on glass and watching and and and helping call shots and stuff like that. But um, I I definitely like if you're gonna help you know, glass and and call impacts, like I don't want to do it for three, like I want to do it for nine people in the squad. That's right. Like I wanna I wanna get in that rhythm and just keep keep keep going, you know, like shooting a one-day match when you're running the tablet and and and trying to trying to call impacts and all that, like if if there's not enough people in a squad and it feels like you're always next, like it's just not that sucks.
SPEAKER_04And in a two-day, I feel like you should be for me, right? Like, I think you should be a little more relaxed and like really focusing on your own game. Uh and we're gonna have, I think, you know, 12 or 13 ROs out there, so we'll have a couple on a couple stages, but the uh shooters will be helping on a few of them. Um, so I figure that'll give them a little more time to get ready. I mean, it should run fairly smooth, they're nice and spaced out, and uh shouldn't be too complicated. So we'll see how it goes.
SPEAKER_03Just curious, are you shooting the same nine and nine both days, or like are you shooting like the same nine and then the same and then a like so there's there's 18 stages, so we're gonna do it like odds and even.
SPEAKER_04So everybody shoots the same same stages each day. Yep.
SPEAKER_03So that's the best way to do it. I agree, yeah. Yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Cool. I saw uh I've been kind of paying attention this week, obviously. We might get a little bit of rain on Saturday.
SPEAKER_04Go figure, dude. We needed rain here for like what, two months, and now that's like, oh, it's match time. It's like, oh yeah, it's raining, raining every day. So it looks like uh, you know, me and my wife were talking about this. It looks like it's Saturday morning for sure, uh, from like midnight to who knows. It was like 11 a.m., but now it looks like it's more like 9 a.m. So I'm hoping that just scooches a couple earlier. Um, yeah. But man, I was up there. I mean, you know, I've been up there setting up uh the day I met you for banners and whatnot, dude. Like it that the bottom just dropped out, man. It was like three inches in about 10 minutes. The whole not the range because it's meant to handle water, but like the whole town. There was like a foot and a half of water on the roads. Uh, there was some hail. So I'm hoping it's not that. So if everybody gets an email Friday morning says coming at nine, that's because there's a tornado coming. So we'll see how it goes.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, and I hope not. I mean, it was wild. That was Sunday. Yeah. Brutal. I mean, like that whole storm, it came right through where we lived too. And um, I mean, there was like in our in our grass and side yard where it sloped, like there was rut marks, like where the you know, water just like pushed the grass over. Yeah. Holy cow, that it was a ton.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, we got one of those here today at my house, which obviously a couple hours away. I don't think they got any up there, but I mean, two, three inches and 45 minutes. I I don't know what's going on with the weather, man. It just does its own thing.
SPEAKER_06Oh man. Well, it's fingers crossed it's not this weekend. Um, I don't mind shooting in the rain, but not that, not that. Yeah. I just hate when my stuff is all wet, too. You know, like I don't mind being wet, but like when you have a like a game changer that's completely soaked and you're like, yeah, now I just gotta take care of this.
SPEAKER_04You know, you gotta get home and take your whole rifle apart, go through all your everything. And uh funny story about messed up stuff. So I have about uh, I don't know, 50 or 60, 70 cases of water in the back of my truck and a huge party tent in there, uh waiting to go up there tomorrow. And uh I'm driving down the road, I'm going to get my hair cut, and then some semi-truck's like hawking his horn. I'm like, God, it's freaking asshole. What is he doing? And he pulls up, he pulls up next to me, he's like, roll out your window. I'm like, oh, this guy's gonna fight. And then I didn't know what it did. And he's like, your tailgate's open, you're dropping water all over the highway. I was like, oh my god, and all the tent, the tent is like, you know, two and a half inch steel bars, it's just bang, blah, blah, blah, all down the road, dude. What a disaster!
SPEAKER_06Are you serious?
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I swear, and I had to uh and there's these little you know, corners where all the steel thing, it's like little tacks all over the road, man. I'm seeing cars. I'm like, oh my god. So I get out there and I kind of you know turn around because it's half mile back of just destruction. Uh and so I ran down there and stopped the cars, and I wasn't picking up all them water bottles, dude. They were all over the place. Um, but I did, I did pick up the steel and I got everything but like the canvas top. So uh we're scrambling to find a big enough tarp, try to have some cover in case we do get just gnarly weather. But yeah, that that uh that was exciting to say the least.
SPEAKER_06This this uh I mean this is like first time match director events. Like this is this only happens your first time, you know.
SPEAKER_04I don't know, man. You know, uh you know, I ran three gun matches for a long time. I never had this shit happen. So I I don't know, maybe this is a PRS thing, so we'll see what happens.
SPEAKER_06It's gotta be a PRS thing. Our first year was an absolute disaster, too. Were you here the first year in 2008?
SPEAKER_04I came, I think, the second year, second and third. Second year, yeah. I don't know if it was the fourth or not, but it was a couple years in a row, yeah.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, man. Well, hopefully nobody nobody got any flat tires and they're gonna be.
SPEAKER_04No, nobody was stopped or anything. They were bobbing and weaving, but every as I was picking up all this metal, I could hear like bottle rockets of Zephyr Hill zinging towards me, you know.
SPEAKER_06It was uh you know, so we 16 ounce bottles of water all over the place.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I think I think everybody made it out of there in SKA, but man, it was uh it was not where I wanted to be at the moment, that's for sure.
SPEAKER_06Dude, yeah, man. Hopefully that's the most of the excitement week. So all right. Um let's uh let's let's pick an order here, how we're gonna pick. Um Derek, second or the third guy to 300. I'll have you go uh first, Jeff will be second, Tucker will be third, and I'll go last here. How's that sound? Perfect. Good enough? Yeah, that'll work. Cool. Uh Derek, um I guess let's go through the list real quick. We'll just talk about some of the pro shooters that are signed up. Um Aaron Kincaid, that's one of those deposits you made too, wasn't it, Tucker? Are you dragging him up from Florida?
SPEAKER_04I didn't I didn't ask anybody uh to come, you know. You know, people got lives and businesses and all, you know. I put the match out there and people are like, hey, you got a match? I'm like, yeah, man, we're done to have you come. And uh he was nice enough to come out.
SPEAKER_06So there you go. There you go.
SPEAKER_01Ben Ben Graham, he just tied Kale the man or Smack.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, he's uh Iowa guy. Um Chad Winkler could do really well. I mean, he's he's been turning it up. He's won a match, too. He's a Wisconsin guy. Yeah, it's right there.
SPEAKER_03I see Clay signed up last minute.
SPEAKER_06He did Chris Offer, Clay Black Edder. Um Ted won one too.
SPEAKER_04He won uh Idaho or uh South Dakota, Ted Hogar. Hager.
SPEAKER_06Yep, Ted Hager, Ted Hager's in here. Um Ted Clark's in here. Um Sam Gearing. Shout out to another Wisconsin guy and Sean Nelson. He's a I mean he's a very pro-Wisconsin guy. He and he's won Sean Nelson has won several barrel maker trophies in years past. Yeah.
SPEAKER_03Who was the guy that won uh Northern Lights again that like works for Hornady? What's his name? Oh, that's Joe. Joe Thielen.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, Joe Thielen. I don't think he's coming up here. No, I haven't heard.
SPEAKER_03Okay.
SPEAKER_06No. Yeah, well, I don't think he's I think I don't think Joe has shot since winning the Northern Lights.
SPEAKER_03Um I shot he won that thing by a massive march.
SPEAKER_06He beat Clay by a pile, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I shot with Joe in uh South Dakota over Opfers match, and uh he was having some okay, some kind of issue. Um he ended up changing some gear out, and then day two he was back to his true self, but you know, damage is done. But uh great dude. I love that guy, man. Uh, we work with them a lot. He's awesome. He's a good dude.
SPEAKER_06He is awesome. Um, he'll be at the Impact Foundation following week, and then obviously shooting worlds uh in limited, I think is what they call it. The attack class. Um, yeah, man. He hasn't shot a heck of a lot, but four matches. All right. Uh so you said Clay Blackheader. I think that's an I think that's a solid pick here. I mean, he's easy, and we just saw the precision rifle blog today. Uh I don't know, he's got all the wins.
SPEAKER_04In case you want to leave him for a later pick, there.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, jacked up thumb and newborn.
SPEAKER_04So yeah, he's still I was just trying to talk you out of him so I could take him, but got it.
SPEAKER_01He he might not have survived another pick had Derek not taken to make you feel better. Although if this is the weekend he struggles, I won't be stunned. Yeah, exactly. Hopefully he'll hear that and then he's not gonna struggle at all.
SPEAKER_03I I mean you're just gonna make him more determined now.
SPEAKER_01That was pretty much the deal. Ah, God, Keith has shot so much. Wait, wait, but let me I'm gonna still take Keith back. Dude, you guys took both my picks.
SPEAKER_04That's there. I think the master director should pick first. We start this over.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Derek just has to be first. He's just so used to it right now. I got it. Well, you can take second, though.
SPEAKER_06I want to point out I think the Peterson match, the second, third, fifth, seventh, ninth, and tenth shooters were unpicked. So any uh I'm just gonna say anything can happen here. Yeah, you never know. Yeah, you know, you never know. Keith and Keith and Clay, though, are pretty good, solid pick.
SPEAKER_04Man, there's a lot of guys like Mark Lee's been shooting good. You got uh Yeah Yeah, Mark Lee.
SPEAKER_06Zabaka's been doing well.
SPEAKER_04Chris Office with Ted Hager, dude. I'm gonna I'm gonna pick him. Midwest boy, he's he's off a win. I'm gonna take him.
SPEAKER_06He's semi-local. Um I man, I I gotta go with somebody from Wisconsin. Sam Geary.
SPEAKER_04I mean, does Josh Edget count?
SPEAKER_06He's kinda he I count him as Wisconsin. Joshu Lickey, I count him as Wisconsin too.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, that's right.
SPEAKER_06Um well I get two here. I get to go back to back. That's why I throw myself last all the time. Um you know I'm uh you know I'm gonna take both, I'm gonna take both Josh's. That's dirty, dude. It is, and I'm gonna leave, I'm gonna leave Sam on the side. I'm gonna take Sam then.
SPEAKER_04I'm guessing it's my turn next.
SPEAKER_06Uh yep, it is back to you. Sam Gearing. I think that's an easy one. Okay.
SPEAKER_01Alright. I think I'm gonna go. I'm torn between a torn between like three. I'll take Ted Clark since you were right next to him, though. Let's take Ted.
SPEAKER_06I think that's a solid pick. We don't know, we don't know who's gonna be good at this range.
SPEAKER_01That'd be good though. Like, I'm waiting to pick someone that you say, oh, that's a crap pick. I don't, I don't think there is yeah, I you can't say that.
SPEAKER_06I can't say that. I could say that. Well, there's one guy on this list that I can say that about. Okay.
SPEAKER_03Um give me Mark Lee. I know he got second at Hornady, and I I messaged him on that one. I was like, that is awesome. I don't want to say. Yeah, he's shooting good that we're and then uh give me Logan McGuinness.
SPEAKER_04He's been shooting good too.
SPEAKER_03Yeah, dude, he is upped his game this year. Like when we were at Twisted Borough, I could tell his motion was different, and like he was he was locked in. Like he's getting he's getting good.
SPEAKER_04He put a good scope on top this year, I think is what happened.
SPEAKER_06Nah, yeah, that helps. That helps. All right, yeah, let's take a look at Logan. Uh Logan, wow, he Logan shot a decent three, six, ten matches so far this year. That helps. Uh that helps. Yep. His top three, an eight, twelve, and an eighteen. There you go. Very consistent. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, very good.
SPEAKER_06Yep.
SPEAKER_01He just needs that little breakout.
SPEAKER_06There you go.
SPEAKER_01Maybe Wisconsin. All right, Jeff. Oh, oh, I I'm gonna take Rusty. He's just too cool not to take Rusty.
SPEAKER_04Always a good pick. All right. Um, I was throwing on Rusty too, man. I mean, Rusty's a stud everywhere it goes. I mean, he's always he's always shooting solid. I'm gonna take Chris Oliver.
SPEAKER_06He's he's Chris Offer. He shoots a good scope too, doesn't he? He does, yeah. Yeah, he does. Alright, I got two more. I'm gonna take I'm gonna take Hunter's wires. Uh Michigan Boy has been shooting well the last year and a half, two years. I'm gonna take Chet Winkler.
SPEAKER_04Dirty, that's what I was gonna do. You guys keep stealing.
SPEAKER_06Well, I mean, we we're leaving a guy on the table that we keep talking about. Finished quite well recently.
SPEAKER_04No, I mean, spit it out. You're done picking. Who are we talking about? Ben Graham? You're gonna take Ben Graham? I mean, I don't know him, but I'll go after judgment, dude. Let's go with Ben Graham. I like it.
SPEAKER_06He finished right behind Kale last week.
SPEAKER_04Okay, I'll take him. I like it. Ben Graham.
SPEAKER_06Yep. Actually, it didn't finish behind. He tied with him uh on Impact. Yeah, no, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Kale's been a complete dude. He's having a year. I mean, he's had a year before. It's not like it's new, but dude, the guy is just I shot with him uh Mississippi, dude. And he's it just seems like he's on another level at the moment, you know. At least the time I shot with him. I mean, he's just murdering it.
SPEAKER_06Yeah, that's what we talked about with him earlier, too. It's just murder.
SPEAKER_04Yeah. It's insane. It was crazy to watch, man. They had some tiny targets at that match, and he didn't miss much.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_06All right. Uh Jeff Geary.
SPEAKER_01I'll take uh Matt Sabaka.
SPEAKER_07Sabaka, I think that's a great choice. Uh so I'm in here. There we go.
SPEAKER_06Okay. We are gonna pick a sleeper at the end, too. So top five plus a sleeper.
SPEAKER_01Excellent.
SPEAKER_06Yeah.
SPEAKER_01I was gonna use my fifth for that, but I'll use it for something else.
SPEAKER_06There you go. Yep. Derek, you get a couple here. You get your four and five picks.
SPEAKER_03Okay. Uh give me uh oh, Cory Vogue's there. And Cory Vogus.
SPEAKER_07Uh squatter though. That should be fun. Good dude. And then super solid, dude.
SPEAKER_03Give me Patty also. Oh. Yeah, Patty Ogs. Yeah. God, getting Patty is a fifth pick.
SPEAKER_06That's a criminal. Yeah, well, and and he's due. Like we say that every time we pick him on here, and I think we all still believe it. Like, he is due to win one.
SPEAKER_03He he was on fire day two at Peterson. Like we were right behind him, and he was like, every time I looked earlier, it's like, damn, he cleaned another one.
SPEAKER_06Like, so I can carry that momentum into this weekend, hopefully.
SPEAKER_01Based on that, I'll take Drew then. Give me a few. Drew Alder.
SPEAKER_04Yep. I gotta take uh my boy Colter, dude. He finally threw away that 308 thing and he's shooting an open gun. Uh I feel I mean I think he's had a couple 95, 96, 97%. So I I think that 100 is is not so elusive with a real gun.
SPEAKER_06So we'll see what happens with a real gun. Um I I'm gonna look up Colter real quick here. He where where did he he had a match? It was a Texas.
SPEAKER_01It was a loophole, the the Texas. Best in Texas. Best in Texas. Yeah. Where he kind of KL and Rootdale were all over.
SPEAKER_06I think he was in second after day one, maybe he's lee. I don't I don't remember.
SPEAKER_01Right there. He may have been tied, but off on the tie break. He was right there.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, and I horn I shot with him at Hornedy too, and he was in the top 10, which was tight all of day one, uh, if I recall correctly, but then day two he had a couple things happen. Uh so I I mean I think he's on the verge for sure. He's been shooting.
SPEAKER_01No doubt. No doubt.
SPEAKER_06Okay. Um, I get my last pick plus a sleeper. Um trying to see who else is on here that maybe I maybe I know are a good Wisconsin shooter that you guys might not identify. It's the only time that I can really put it to use, right?
SPEAKER_04Happy to happy to know.
SPEAKER_06Reed Griffin's shooting us. He's the uh pursuit director. He is, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Yeah, I was I was happy enough to donate him a spot since he secured our range for us.
SPEAKER_06So he yeah, he knows a lot of guys in that area there.
SPEAKER_01Seeing a couple names on there, I forgot. I was looking at the squads earlier, right before we did this, just to see who was there, and I knew Clay was going, so I saw who was in his squad, and he squatted with the guys that do the view from the pack uh podcast. It's uh Paul Fowler, Joe Sala, and then there's another guy that kind of shoots with him. But for some reason, I think that's gonna cost Clay at least like two shots. You think so? Just being with that group, it's that's gonna be tough to win.
SPEAKER_04So he's in squad five. That's good for us, bad for Derek.
SPEAKER_01No, they're great, great dudes. I've shot with them twice, and both times I've probably had like two of my worst matches ever. So I just now associate them. I can't hear him. You know. And L it's gonna rub off on Clay.
SPEAKER_06I I am gonna take um I'm gonna take David Benner as my sleeper.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_06He's squatted with clay. Um I know he's been training with clay. I think that's probably a that's probably a solid pick. Um and sleeper has to be pro or less, right? Okay. Um I'm gonna take Sean Nelson. Did you say pro or less?
SPEAKER_04Everybody's pro or less than pro less than pro.
SPEAKER_06Less than pro. I'm sorry. I'm just making sure I heard that right. That's a mispoke. Yep, yeah. All right, it's a tucker.
SPEAKER_04I'm gonna take uh Keelan Woods. I don't know if you guys know who that is, but uh I think he was either leading or in second place for all of day one.
SPEAKER_00That was gonna be my my sleep.
SPEAKER_04Sorry about that. I really I really hate that for you, Jeff. Um, I can tell that. But you would have been, I think, second place for between first and third, all of day one in South Dakota, Chris's match. And then I don't know if his old lady loaded his ammo or he was distracted by by his old lady when he was loading ammo, but he kept having dummy rounds like not go off. And uh and he texted me again last week, said a similar issue. So, Keelan, uh, if you need help loading, come to the house, we'll get you squared away. Uh I'd love to see you put two days together, man. Yep, that's a good pick.
SPEAKER_00Could you scroll down just a little bit, Ken? Let me see. Greg's on well, I guess based on that, uh, sweet person. Oh, give me Jason. Jason, Jason Alvez. Is that what that says? Jason Alvez, yep.
SPEAKER_06Yep. It's Alves. Yep, he's coming up from Arizona, uh, presumably with Rusty. He was my uh at the pursuit test match, he and I shot that as a team. Good shooter. Okay, yeah, real solid. Yep.
SPEAKER_01Definitely very familiar with the name.
SPEAKER_06Yep, and has shot several barrel makers. This might be a second. I know he shot at least one, yeah. Alright, Derek.
SPEAKER_03Give me Derek Davidson. Derek Davidson. Yeah, I know.
SPEAKER_06Him and Garrett Stevens, I think we're both well.
SPEAKER_03They should be up there in North Dakota, so if he he shoots in that neck of the woods plenty, so I know.
SPEAKER_01So it's a good strategy.
SPEAKER_06There you go. So my my only goal this weekend is to get into the top 20 here, so that I can look back at this and be like, yep, see, should have picked myself.
SPEAKER_04I thought I thought somebody was gonna pick you as a sleeper at least. But then you said the pro, you know, then it was like, um, he's out.
SPEAKER_01I'm gonna be honest, I didn't even see your name. Where there you are. The eyes just buzzed past you, man. Um I apologize. No, I saw you there.
SPEAKER_06Well, we left Laurel Akinet on there, too. And she she easily could be a top 20. I mean, it any oh yeah, any of these can be, you know, maybe not John Kyle shooting sportsmen.
SPEAKER_04That's well, he uh he called me the other day, and I'm actually gonna bust his chops a little bit. Uh I guess Tate or him got some kind of invite to shoot some governor's sporting play thing, and he's like, he's like, if you need me there, I'll be there. I was like, dude, this is like the silliest, the silliest conversation, bro. Go do your thing. Uh so he's actually gonna bail out. So there's gonna be uh, of course, he did not uh withdraw as as some people do, so he's he's in trouble, but only a little bit.
SPEAKER_06Okay, but he won't be there. That's a bummer. That's a bummer. Um, are you heading down there the following week? Yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_04I'll be I'll be at his match, Dan.
SPEAKER_06No problem. Of course you will. Yeah, no problem. Nothing would keep you from governance.
SPEAKER_04No governor, no governor's teacher would keep me away from business.
SPEAKER_06Uh yeah, I don't think Tony Evers is gonna call you to do that either. No.
SPEAKER_04Nope.
SPEAKER_03Oh, I just realized something. You got Peterson cartridge where it should say barrel.
SPEAKER_07Oh, yeah. I have a copy. I'm sorry. Hey, barrel maker picks.
SPEAKER_03And there you go. Because I got pretty good insight about the Peterson match, just saying.
SPEAKER_06I mean, if we were exactly that's attention to detail. Appreciate that, Derek. Awesome. All right, boys. Um, we'll see how this shakes out. I'm looking forward to it this weekend. Um, yeah, and then we'll we'll uh we'll pick again next week for the next match. Maybe uh maybe I'll shoot well enough this next week that um somebody will actually pick me for the following month. But there's gonna be so many heavy hitters down there at impact. Yeah, uh yeah, it's gonna go pretty deep.
SPEAKER_04Well, Ken, thanks for get you in there. Thanks for having me, dude. I appreciate you coming out to the match, and I hope we I hope we do you justice, man. I feel like we will, but you never know until uh till the bullets are done. So we'll see how it goes.
SPEAKER_06We'll see. I'm I'm confident, man. It's gonna be a great weekend. So, anyways, uh stay tuned, watch impact, and um yeah, thanks for coming on, guys. See you boys. Absolutely see ya, see you tucker. Thank you for having me.
SPEAKER_01Yep, see you, Derek. Congrats again, yeah.
SPEAKER_04Nice shooting, dude.
