Today we are studying Matthew Chapter 26. In this chapter, Jesus is anointed in Bethany, shares the Last Supper with His disciples, prays in deep anguish in Gethsemane, is betrayed by Judas, arrested, and denied by Peter—revealing both the depth of Christ’s love and the weakness of human flesh, while pointing us toward surrender, faithfulness, and repentance. Chapter 26 reminds us that following Jesus involves both intimacy and sacrifice. It shows us the power of worship, the necessity of prayer, the reality of human weakness, and the beauty of surrender. Even when we fall short, God’s grace invites us back into relationship with Him.

Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible book by book and chapter by chapter. Our goal is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.
First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Matthew 26:28 Jesus says, “For this is My blood that establishes the covenant; it is shed for many for the forgiveness of sins.” This promise reminds us that through Jesus’ sacrifice, our sins are forgiven. His blood secures a new covenant between us and God. No matter our past, we can stand in the assurance that forgiveness is available through Him.
Next is a Response to Make. In Matthew 26:41 Jesus tells His disciples, “Stay awake and pray, so that you won’t enter into temptation. The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” Our response is to stay spiritually alert and committed to prayer. We cannot rely on our own strength—we must depend on God daily to overcome temptation and remain faithful.
Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Matthew 26:8–9 it says, “When the disciples saw it, they were indignant: ‘Why this waste? This might have been sold for a great deal and given to the poor.’” This challenges us to examine how we view worship and devotion. What may seem excessive to others can be an act of deep love toward Jesus. We must shift from a critical mindset to one that values wholehearted devotion.
Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Matthew 26:26 Jesus says, “Take and eat it; this is My body.” The instruction is to receive and remember. Jesus calls us to partake in Him—to live in constant remembrance of His sacrifice and to allow His life to sustain us spiritually.
Next we come to a Sin to Confess. In Matthew 26:75 it says, “Then Peter remembered the words Jesus had spoken: ‘Before the rooster crows, you will deny Me three times.’ And he went outside and wept bitterly.” This reveals the sin of denial and unfaithfulness. Like Peter, we may fail in moments of fear or pressure. We must confess those moments and return to God with a repentant heart.
Finally, we see an Example to Follow. In Matthew 26:39 Jesus prays, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me. Yet not as I will, but as You will.” Jesus gives us the ultimate example of surrender. Even in deep anguish, He chose the Father’s will over His own. We are called to follow that same path of obedience, trusting God even when it’s difficult.
Matthew Chapter 26 reminds us that following Jesus involves both intimacy and sacrifice. It shows us the power of worship, the necessity of prayer, the reality of human weakness, and the beauty of surrender. Even when we fall short, God’s grace invites us back into relationship with Him.
