Today we are studying Matthew Chapter 27. In this chapter, Jesus is handed over to Pilate, falsely accused, mocked, beaten, and crucified. We witness His suffering, His sacrifice on the cross, and the events surrounding His death and burial—revealing the depth of God’s love and the price paid for our redemption. We are reminded that the cross is not just a moment in history—it is the turning point of eternity. It reveals the seriousness of sin, the cost of grace, and the immeasurable love of God. Jesus willingly endured suffering so that we could receive forgiveness and new life.

Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible book by book and chapter by chapter. Our goal is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.
First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Matthew 27:50–51 it says, “But Jesus cried out again with a loud voice and gave up His spirit. Suddenly, the curtain of the sanctuary was split in two from top to bottom; the earth quaked, and the rocks were split.” This promise reminds us that through Jesus’ death, access to God is now open. The veil being torn signifies that we can come directly into God’s presence because of what Christ has done for us.
Next is a Response to Make. In Matthew 27:22 Pilate asks, “What should I do then with Jesus who is called Messiah?” They all answered, “Crucify Him!” This question still stands for each of us today—what will we do with Jesus? Our response must be to accept Him as Lord and Savior, choosing faith over rejection.
Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Matthew 27:24 it says, “When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, ‘I’m innocent of this man’s blood. See to it yourselves!’” This challenges us to examine the attitude of avoidance and compromise. We cannot remain neutral about Jesus or shift responsibility. We must stand firm in truth rather than yielding to pressure.
Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Matthew 27:37 it says, “Above His head they put up the charge against Him in writing: THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.” The instruction is to recognize and honor Jesus as King. Our lives should reflect His authority, submitting to Him not just in word, but in action and obedience.
Next we come to a Sin to Confess. In Matthew 27:3–4 it says, “Then Judas, His betrayer, seeing that He had been condemned, was full of remorse and returned the 30 pieces of silver to the chief priests and elders. ‘I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,’ he said.” This reveals the sin of betrayal and the danger of unresolved guilt. We must confess our sins and bring them to God, not carry them alone or let them lead us to despair.
Finally, we see an Example to Follow. In Matthew 27:54 it says, “When the centurion and those with him, who were keeping watch over Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they were terrified and said, ‘This man really was God’s Son!’” The centurion gives us an example of recognition and belief. Even in the midst of witnessing the crucifixion, he acknowledged the truth of who Jesus is. We are called to see clearly and declare boldly that Jesus is the Son of God.
Matthew Chapter 27 reminds us that the cross is not just a moment in history—it is the turning point of eternity. It reveals the seriousness of sin, the cost of grace, and the immeasurable love of God. Jesus willingly endured suffering so that we could receive forgiveness and new life.
