Today we are studying Mark Chapter 2. In this chapter, Jesus forgives and heals a paralyzed man, calls Levi the tax collector, eats with sinners, teaches about new life in Him, and declares His authority over the Sabbath—showing us that He has the power to forgive sin, transform lives, and redefine what it truly means to follow God. This chapter reminds us that Jesus has authority over sin, over tradition, and over every area of our lives. He calls us to follow Him, to be made new, and to walk in the freedom of forgiveness. It challenges us to lay down pride, embrace grace, and trust fully in His power to transform.

Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible book by book and chapter by chapter. Our goal is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.

First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Mark 2:5, Jesus says, “Son, your sins are forgiven.” This promise reminds us that through Jesus, forgiveness is available. No matter our past, our failures, or our brokenness, Jesus has the authority to forgive completely. We can live in freedom knowing that our sins are not held against us when we come to Him in faith.

Next is a Response to Make. In Mark 2:14 it says, “Then, passing by, He saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax office, and He said to him, ‘Follow Me.’ So he got up and followed Him.” Our response is to leave behind our old life and follow Jesus. Like Levi, we are called to respond immediately, not holding on to what is comfortable, but stepping into the new life Christ offers.

Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Mark 2:17 Jesus says, “It is not those who are well who need a doctor, but those who are sick. I didn’t come to call the righteous, but sinners.” This challenges us to change any prideful or self-righteous attitude. We must recognize our need for Jesus and extend grace to others, understanding that we are all in need of His mercy.

Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Mark 2:22 Jesus teaches, “And no one puts new wine into old wineskins. Otherwise, the wine will burst the skins, and the wine is lost as well as the skins. No, new wine is put into fresh wineskins.” The instruction is to embrace the new life Jesus brings. We cannot hold onto old patterns, old mindsets, or old ways of living while trying to follow Him. We must allow Him to make us new.

Next we come to a Sin to Confess. In Mark 2:7 it says, “Why does He speak like this? He’s blaspheming! Who can forgive sins but God alone?” This reveals the sin of unbelief and hardness of heart. The religious leaders rejected Jesus because He didn’t fit their expectations. We must confess any doubt, skepticism, or resistance to who Jesus truly is and what He wants to do in our lives.

Finally, we see an Example to Follow. In Mark 2:3–4 it says, “They came to Him bringing a paralytic, carried by four men. Since they were not able to bring him to Jesus because of the crowd, they removed the roof above Him; and when they had broken it open, they lowered the mat on which the paralytic was lying.” This is a powerful example of persistent faith. These men stopped at nothing to bring their friend to Jesus. We are called to have that same kind of faith—not only for ourselves, but for others.

Mark Chapter 2 reminds us that Jesus has authority over sin, over tradition, and over every area of our lives. He calls us to follow Him, to be made new, and to walk in the freedom of forgiveness. It challenges us to lay down pride, embrace grace, and trust fully in His power to transform.
