Today we are studying Mark Chapter 3. In this chapter, Jesus heals on the Sabbath, confronts hardened hearts, appoints His twelve apostles, and redefines what it means to belong to His family—showing us that following Him requires compassion, obedience, and a heart aligned with God’s will. Chapter 3 reminds us that Jesus has authority over sickness, over spiritual darkness, and even over tradition. It calls us to have soft hearts, to respond when He calls, and to live in obedience as part of His family. It’s not about outward appearance—it’s about inward transformation and a life aligned with God’s will.

Welcome to Giving God PRAISE. This is a podcast where we walk through the entire Bible book by book and chapter by chapter. Our goal is to discover not only what God’s Word says, but what it means to praise God in our daily life. In each episode, we explore a Promise to Claim, a Response to Make, an Attitude to Change, an Instruction to Obey, a Sin to Confess, and an Example to Follow. So let’s go ahead and grab our Bibles and dive into today’s teaching.

First, we see a Promise to Claim. In Mark 3:5 it says, “After looking around at them with anger, He was grieved at the hardness of their hearts and told the man, ‘Stretch out your hand.’ So he stretched it out, and his hand was restored.” This shows us that Jesus brings restoration. No matter what is broken in our lives—physically, emotionally, or spiritually—He has the power to make it whole. We can trust Him to heal what we cannot fix ourselves.

Next is a Response to Make. In Mark 3:13–14 it says, “Then He went up the mountain and summoned those He wanted, and they came to Him. He appointed Twelve… so that they might be with Him and He might send them out to preach.” The response is to come when Jesus calls. Just like the disciples, we are invited not only to follow Him, but to be with Him and be sent out. Our response should be availability and obedience.

Now let’s consider an Attitude to Change. In Mark 3:5 again, it says Jesus was “grieved at the hardness of their hearts.” This challenges us to examine our own hearts. Are we resistant to God’s work? Do we prioritize rules, pride, or comfort over compassion and truth? We must soften our hearts and remain sensitive to God’s voice and leading.

Then we see an Instruction to Obey. In Mark 3:4 Jesus asks, “Is it lawful on the Sabbath to do what is good or to do what is evil, to save life or to kill?” The instruction is clear: do good. Following Jesus means choosing what is right and life-giving, even when it challenges tradition, expectation, or convenience. We are called to act with compassion and righteousness at all times.

Next we come to a Sin to Confess. In Mark 3:29 it says, “But whoever blasphemes against the Holy Spirit never has forgiveness, but is guilty of an eternal sin.” This points to the seriousness of rejecting and resisting the work of the Holy Spirit. We must confess any tendency to ignore, deny, or harden ourselves against God’s truth and Spirit. A surrendered heart is essential in our walk with Christ.

Finally, we see an Example to Follow. In Mark 3:35 Jesus says, “Whoever does the will of God is My brother and sister and mother.” This is a powerful example of what it means to truly belong to Jesus—not just by association, but by obedience. Those who live according to God’s will are part of His family. Our example is to live a life that reflects obedience and devotion to Him.

Mark Chapter 3 reminds us that Jesus has authority over sickness, over spiritual darkness, and even over tradition. It calls us to have soft hearts, to respond when He calls, and to live in obedience as part of His family. It’s not about outward appearance—it’s about inward transformation and a life aligned with God’s will.
